There are many experimental works on the investigation of temperature effect on the conductivity of polymers filled by carbon materials. However frequently the establishment of current nature in the polymer heterogeneous systems becomes difficult. This fact is explained by complexity of calculation of different physical or chemical phenomena passing in materials at variation of the temperature. Among these phenomena it must be noted some morphological changes in the structure of polymers. These changes reflex on the structure of conductive system of composites. So, it has been shown, that the character of temperature dependence of thermal noises level and conductivity of some polymers filled by carbon black essentially depend on some relaxation transition in the polymeric matrix. In this paper the effect of difference transitions in polymer matrix of filled by carbon black some polymers and rubbers have been investigated in a wide temperature range. The importance of such investigation is due to possibility of application of resistive temperature sensors based on conductive polymeric composites (CPC) to measuring technology. The experiments have been carried out in the cavity with regulation of temperature in the range 110-650K. The resistance of samples was measured by four electrodes method. The samples were obtained by hot pressing of dry mixture of powdered components at chosen temperatures, pressures and cooling time in the case of plastics and by peroxide vulcanization of the elastomers in the case of the rubbers. The samples were produced on the basis of the following thermoplastics: low density polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polycarbonate and polydimethylmethylvinilsiloxane.

Although chlorine fluxing to remove magnesium has been widely practiced in the aluminum industry for many years, there appear to have been few fundamental studies of the kinetics and transport phenomena involved. The paper describes such a study in which the rates of reaction of individual argon/chlorine bubbles with aluminum/magnesium melts were measured. The detachment of bubbles from a submerged nozzle, at variable depth in the melt, was detected by a microphone and the arrival of the bubble at the top surface by conductivity probes. Analysis of exit gases and mass balances yielded the overall progress of reaction. Experimental results are interpreted in terms of heterogeneous reaction kinetics and mass transport to the bubble-melt interface,

Antitrust and competition laws are designed to protect the free markets and promote competition in order to assure a dynamic and efficient economy and to provide competitive prices for quality products and services. They apply to mergers and acquisitions as well as to joint ventures especially among competitor companies who possess market power and these include collaborations on research and development. If it is determined that these actions are likely to substantially prevent or lessen competition the courts might dissolve, stop, alternate them, etc. Two new factors affect this process today: The role of new technologies and the markets globalization. They both have a considerable effect on the way these laws are interpreted by the courts and on their eventual amendments in order to reflect the new reality. A new applied technology and the globalization separately or together may change the factors that determine how anticompetitive a merger or acquisition between competitors may be and may also serve as a basis for amending the antitrust and competition laws. In this paper, a short review of the recent mergers and acquisitions of various companies has been carried out along with an abridged analysis of the current antitrust and competition laws in USA, Canada and European Union in the view of their capacity to handle the new reality. Some related court decisions are also examined and several examples are given in order to illustrate the influence of new technologies and globalization in interpreting the existing laws and on their amendment possibilities.

UFP are defined by atoms or their clusters having diameter in the range of l0Å-0.l.um. Due to a ratio of very large surface area to volume, they have peculiar properties such as extra high surface energy. Recently UFP deposition technique may find its new applications to various areas such as conductive/resistive film formation. In this method, gas flow with UFP jet through the nozzle which is considered to be a free molecular flow is maintained at a very high speed (~100m/s). Using this technique, mixture film of Fe and Ni, and Ag/ Ag-Alloy etc. were obtained, and their mechanical and electro-magnetic properties were determined. The experimental results are pending. The test results and discussion will be presented in the main paper.

In July 2003, The Office of Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Infrastructure Technologies of the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy solicited Grand Challenge Proposals to establish three Centers of Excellence in hydrogen storage developments for reversible metal hydrides, non-reversible chemical hydrides and carbon storage materials, respectively. The program mission is to research and develop cost-effective, on-board hydrogen storage systems that enable a minimum range of 300 miles within the weight and volume constraints of the vehicle. Currently, no hydrogen storage technology available can meet the DOE cost and performance targets. In April 2004, Sandia National Laboratories was selected by DOE to lead the Metal Hydride Center of Excellence with partners from 5 other national laboratories. We will present the organization and recent accomplishments of the Metal Hydride Center which is confident to accomplish DOE/FreedomCAR and Fuels Partnership objectives for 2010 in hydrogen storage for vehicular transportation applications.

"The major source of environmental pollution in urban areas is the transport sector and its impact on human health and the greenhouse is preoccupying. In many works of literature is monitored the pollutants in urban cities, however in specific areas such as universities, they are scarce. Therefore, the aim of this work is to monitorate the gaseous pollutans in a bus terminal at Santa Cruz do Sul University-UNISC and to develop a control framework of the air quality. Six points were selected for monitoring, being one of them inside a bus. The monitoring of CO, HC and CO2 were carried out on arrival and departure of the bus. Preliminary results conducted in a day of spring showed that the most critical condition was during the night shift, where the concentration of CO (200 ppm) was the highest, caused by the vehicles increase, due to the larger number of students.IntroductionAccording to Mascarenhas et al, 2005, air pollutants are responsible for various effects on vegetation, ecosystems and is recognized as one of major public health problems of today, with harmful effect on humans even at levels considered safe by Brazilian legislation.There are numerous scientific papers linking air pollution with respiratory problems, cardiovascular which hinder the daily life because many of these diseases are chronic and may even lead to death, as was noted by Brook et al, 2004.There is a significant increase in the last decades of emissions to air resulting mainly from human activities. Already being observed the relationship of these emissions with the change in global climate, IPCC, 1995.They are a multitude of pollutants from the atmosphere, and its sources and its effects. The effect of Greenhouse gases (GHG), representing less than 1% of the gases in the atmosphere, controlling the flow of energy in the atmosphere. The increase in emissions of greenhouse gases is affecting the Earth's average temperature, which depends on the balance between these flows, in particular the flow of solar radiation reaching the surface and the flow of infrared radiation sent into space.One of the main greenhouse gases to this imbalance is the gas methane (CH4). Methane is produced by anaerobic decomposition of organic substances, through the action of bacteria metanogenic conditions that require highly reduced to its growth. This gas is released into the atmosphere mainly by transport diffusive by aerenchyma (vascular tissue) plant and also by diffusion through the water slide. (Bont et al., 1978)."

"The requirement for the reduction of sulphur dioxide emissions from copper smelters is becoming more and more important. Therefore, the most important question in smelting technology will be how to produce even, high strength SO2 gas in smelter and how to combine smelting and converting. The best sorution in certain cases is to eliminate converters totally.Outokumpu is already responding to this challenge. As a result of extensive research work, Outokumpu Oy has developed the Flash Smelting Process for direct smelting of blister copper from concentrates in one step.The newest process development is the Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting process, where solidified copper matte is converted into blister copper. The production of low volume high SO2 content gases, separation of smelting and converting operations to allow increased on-line availability, and simplified process control are the major benefits of the process which translates to reduced smelter capital and operating costs.Also, it has been studied the use of the same Outokumpu furnace for smelting and converting alternately when the production capacity is low.In this paper, the developments and improvements of the Outokumpu Process are described from the operation and investment cost standpoints"

The U.S. aluminum recycling industry has experienced rapid growth in both its size and importance over the past two decades. Secondary recovery now makes up about one-third of total U.S .. aluminum supply compared with ]9 percent, of a much smaller total in the early 1970's. This growth has occurred in part because recycled metal performs as well as new aluminum in most applications, and because it provides major savings in production costs and natural resource utilization. In addition, the recycling industry has played a critical role in greatly expanded -production and reclamation of aluminum beverage cans. Recycled metal makes up over half of the content of aluminum sheet used: to manufacture beverage cans. In future years, both the-production and reclamation of aluminum cans are likely to rise in foreign markets, thus providing the industry with opportunities for further growth. Recyclers may also play a larger role in supplying auto producers who are using increasing amounts of aluminum in passenger cars and trucks. However, in order to take advantage of this growing market, an efficient infrastructure for collection of scrap and production of metal must be developed.

"Laboratory and pilot-scale tests are almost invariably required before metallurgical development can proceed. Difficulties with sampling, as well as with classical chemical and physical scaleups, are normally anticipated and relatively well-understood, but more subjective factors also come into play, including misunderstandings of the operating scheme chosen, wrong ""lessons"" learned from similar operations, failures to handle data appropriately, and even arbitrary intervention by management. The paper examines some of these subjective factors and suggests ways to guard against them. Several anecdotal case studies are used as examples, including when and where to heap leach or to mill specific types of gold ore.When the Romans first exploited the gold-rich gossans at Rio Tinto, they were guided by analyses and tests that delineated the ore deposits, identified the richer portions, and measured the gold recoveries achieved. There is little evidence, however, to suggest that test data were used to develop improved methods of metallurgical extraction. Indeed, it is likely that ores too difficult to treat were simply passed by, at least until improvements in full-scale operations could deal with them. For example, it is not difficult to imagine that an early metallurgist might test a tin ore by placing some in a fire; a smallscale emulation of the method actually used in practice."

Electrowinning is directly impacted by many parameters that include electrolyte composition, voltage, current density, contact resistance, temperature, electrode spacing, and fluid flow as well as many other interrelated factors. The effects of these parameters are primarily related to thermodynamics, mass transport, and electrochemical kinetics. In this study thermodynamic, mass transport, and electrochemical kinetic equations are simultaneously solved to determine the effects of such parameters on electrowinning current efficiency, power consumption, electrodeposit morphology, and electrodeposit distribution. Modeling predictions will be compared with experimental results.

Over 25 years of US research in Mineral Recovery from Geothermal Solutions have lead to few commercial applications. With the World Bank program in Kamchatka, Russia in September 2005 a step was taken to vitalize and coordinate the many efforts to advance economic mineral recovery systems worldwide. The US Department of Energy is helping to spur on the interest and research needed to realize the many benefits of extracting minerals from geothermal solutions. The excitement of recovery of minerals from geothermal brines has many positive angles. The economics of certain geothermal site is improved if a revenue is arrived from a sellable commodity with the geothermal power. The use of cleaner geothermal brines also improves the capable use of the brine before reinjection. We will review the history of Geothermal in the USA and the opportunities for recovery of different minerals and the markets for them.

A new process for extracting indium from indium-zinc concentrates was proposed in this paper. The process can directly extract indium from removed copper solution by P204, and cancel the stage of removing iron in the traditional process because of using iron and part of zinc in the In-Zn concentrates for direct preparing high quality Mn-Zn soft magnetic ferrites. The technologies in the processes, such as leaching the neutral leached residues with high concentrated acid at high temperature, reduction ferric and removing copper, and extracting indium, were investigated. The results showed that total recovery ratio of indium has been increased from less than 70% in the traditional process to more than 95%. This process has the advantages of largely simplifying the procedure of indium extraction, zero draining off of iron residue and zero emitting of SO2. So this is a clean production process.

The extraction performances exhibited by a phosphoric (D2EHPA), a phosphonic (Ionquest 801), a phosphinic (Cyanex 272) and a dithiophosphinic (Cyanex 301) acid derivative towards indium recovery from a diluted sulfuric solution are evaluated and compared. Equilibrium extraction isotherms were obtained. The chemical reactions involved and the approximate stoichiometry of the In(III) extracted species by the four ligands are presented and discussed. Stripping of In(III) from loaded D2EHPA and Ionquest 801 has been accomplished successfully, but has not been so effective from loaded Cyanex 301. Plots of %E vs. pH were established for D2EHPA, Ionquest 801 and Cyanex 301, denoting their behavior towards the extraction of similar mass concentrations of In(III), Fe(III), Fe(II) and Zn(II). Cyanex 301 is the least selective towards In(III), whereas D2EHPA and Ionquest 801, both for a pH = 0.5, do not extract Zn(II) at all.

It is known for a long time that the reaction of oxygen with carbon, silicon, iron and many other elements is exothermic. The heat of released from these kind of reactions can decrease the time of fusion of iron and steel for metallurgical purposes in the electrical arc furnaces. By decreasing the time of fusion, we increase the rate of process and the amount of production. So, by blowing oxygen in to the furnace, we can reduce the consumption of electricity and save cost. There are many problems in the procedure of the oxygen blowing. In this project, the theoretical aspect of the oxygen blowing and its side effects into the arc electric furnaces are investigated. An oxygen blowing system into the arc electrical furnace of metallurgy department of Machine Sazi factory was also set up. This process reduced the consumption of electricity up to 22% and increases the rate of production, by reducing tap ? to ? tap time up to 15%. In this project; all oxygen blowing systems and its control were set up.

Copper refineries use massive copper castings as moulds into which impure molten copper from the reverberatory furnace is poured to form anodes for further electrolytic refining. To facilitate removal of the copper anodes from the mould and to prolong the life of the mould itself, it is traditional to spray the mould surface prior to each use with a slurry of baryte in water. This slurry application leads to poor housekeeping, operating costs are escalated by the cost of the slurry, and additional problems in the subsequent refining process are experienced due to carry-over of excess undesirable baryte powder. A one-time application of a diffused layer of aluminum to the surface of the copper mould prior to putting the mould into service has been found to provide extended mould life and facilitate anode removal, as well as reducing baryte consumption; thereby reducing operating costs at both the anode manufacturing and refining stages.

Retrofitting and de-bottlenecking of existing gas handling lines will be described and exemplified. Methods of increasing total gas handling line availability will be described.
