THE Alabama Power Co. operates its Gorgas mine in Walker County, Ala., immediately adjacent to its steam plant. The coal mine property consists of some 19,000 acres of fee and mineral ownership lands, and all of the production from the mine-approximately 2500 tons per day-is utilized at the company's adjoining steam plant. The company is presently considering the purchase of additional acreage adjoining its present holdings which acquisition will almost double its reserves. The coal is transported from the mine over a short railroad spur in the company's own equipment, either directly to one of the large plants at Gorgas or to a storage pile. The longest haul is about 1 1/4 miles.

The New York talc deposits of commercial importance are in St. Lawrence and Lewis counties, in the northwest Adirondack Mountains (Fig 1). All of the deposits are of pre-Cambrian age and occur within highly deformed and recrystallized marble of the Gren-ville series. The deposits in St. Lawrence County, near Gouverneur, are the largest and most productive of their type known in the Western Hemisphere. In 1948 the seven mines which are in operation will produce about 130,000 tons of ground talc. All talc production in Lewis County is from one mine. There the annual production ranges from 15,000 to 30,000 tons. These so called talcs of New Yorb State include earth materials of different chemical and mineral compositions. In general the mineral talc is subordinate in amount to other minerals in both the Gouverneur and Natural Bridge deposits. In the Gouverneur district the mineral talc comprises less than 25 pct of the mined and ground rock. Most of the rock mined is a tremolite- or tremolite-anthophyllite schist somewhat altered to serpentine and talc. This characteristic in no way tlevaluates the "talc" for certain markets, and in some instances makes the material more desirable. The life of refractory linings in rotary cement kilns can be shortened by uneven or inadequate support of the kiln and its shell and by variations in the conditions of operation. Alteration of these factors may, according to their nature, bring about mechanical deterioration of the lining or promote chemical attack. Chemical attack has been described elsewhere. The distortion of cement kilns has been discussed in a general manner by Rochow, who indicates the amount of distortion which may occur in an unlined shell, and by Rosenblad; who states that the deformations of the shell are greatest above the trunnions. The present article indicates the extent of the distortion of a kiln to an oval shape in certain selected positions and the deviation from a straight line of the kiln along its length between two supports. The cement kiln is a long, hollow, rotating cylinder consisting of steel plates which may be either welded or riveted together. This shell is supported on tires, frequently 60 ft apart, which roll on trunnions. The large mass of the kiln causes distortion of its cross-section; it becomes slightly oval, i.e., diameters lengthen as they become horizontal and shorten as they become vertical. There is also a tendency for the shell to bow between supporting tires; this bowing may be upwards or downwards depending on the position of the weight forces and the supports. The extent of the deviations from the ideal kiln shape was investigated.

Approaching exhaustion of areas where traditional prospecting methods can pay off and sharply rising costs require increasing sophistication in planning exploration. Most outcrops, not only of ore and gossan but also of obvious zones of alteration, have been examined; many of the anomalies readily detectable by geophysical means have been drilled; geochemical surveys now cover extensive tracts. How should the explorationist proceed to find the ores that will keep his company in business and supply the world with the energy and raw materials it needs? Two courses are open to him: (1) saturation coverage by geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and drilling in the expectation that something will turn up or (2) critical analysis of the factors responsible for the concentration of valuable minerals in the earth's crust. The successful explorationist applies both methods to the limit of his resources. The second course, analysis of geologic factors, also comprises two principal lines of research: (1) ever more detailed study of the chemistry (including isotopic analysis) of the ore and gangue minerals of known deposits in an effort to understand how they were formed and (2) increasingly detailed mapping of their environment to determine the reasons for their localization. Again, both are very necessary.

GEO. F. COMSTOCK,* Niagara Falls, N. Y. (written discussion?).-This interesting paper throws additional light on a question about which differences of opinion have apparently existed in the past, and the writer would like to record in this connection the agreement of his experience with that of Primrose and Prof. Smart in regard to the effect of quenching on the properties of gun-metal bronze. The writer's results have been published, so that there is no need for a detailed report, here, but his in-vestigations resulted in showing that both gun metal and manganese bronze are ruined by quenching in water from a red heat, apparently because they cannot stand the strains produced by the sudden cooling. The lines, mentioned by Prof. Smart, in a polished and etched section of the quenched metal have also been noticed by the writer, who however has not found them any different in quenched specimens than in annealed specimens. Since they appear only after etching, it would seem most probable that they are merely grain boundaries in most cases, though Prof. Smart's idea that they are indications of strains is by no means impossible. Fig. 1 shows how these lines appeared on the author's speci-mens of annealed gun metal, etched with ammonia and hydrogen per-oxide, and magnified 100 diameters.

ThE eutectoid decomposition of 6 phase in the Cu-Sn system (32.53 wt pct Sn) has been studied by several investigators.1-6 On the basis of X-ray work, Iball and 0wen1 reported complete decomposition of 6 in powder specimens after 7 days at 300°C. Wang and Hansen followed the micro-structural changes during heat treatment of lump specimens and estimated 5 pct decomposition after 63 days at 300°C. Wang and Hansen suggested that the discrepancy between the decomposition rates of powder and lump specimens might be due to the excess surface free energy of powders. The present work involved 6 decomposition in copper-tin alloy powders containing 32.6 wt pct Sn. Alloy lump specimens exhibited entirely 6 phase after fairly slow cooling (air cooling) from above 350°C and were so brittle that they could be easily crushed to-200 mesh in a percussion mortar. X-ray diffraction study of the as-crushed powders (-200 mesh) revealed 100 pct 6 phase with very slight line broadening effects due to strain introduced by crushing. Among the technical problems in AEC's Project Plowshare is the necessity of determining the precise effects of nuclear blasts in all kinds of ground formations. This calls for extensive in-situ sampling with full core recovery. In the exploration drilling that often precedes a new test detonation, the AEC and its contractors have applied both novel and established sampling techniques in many new ways, giving improved core recovery and reduced costs in all subsurface sampling and testing. Unique among these new techniques is one that achieved full recovery and virtually undisturbed samples from near-surface layers of unconsolidated boulder-strewn alluvium. This approach involves a combination of oilfield and mining core drilling equipment. Oilfield heavy drill collars, rotary stabilizers and thick, vibration-reducing oil emulsion drilling mud were used in combination with the precise hydraulic feed control, fast (over 300 rpm) bit rotation, light drilling weight, hard rock core barrels and multi-step diamond bits that are common in mining industry diamond drilling.

SEARCH for a consistent theory to explain the relationship between energy input and size reduction in a comminution process has accumulated, over the years, an enormous amount of plant and laboratory data. Although some correlation of these data has been possible for purposes of engineering design and for the advancement of research in fracture, there is still great need of a means of predicting behaviour of a solid when it is reduced in size by mechanical forces. The best known hypotheses proposed to describe the energy-size reduction relationships in crushing and grinding stem from a common origin. The present article analyzes problems of comminution in the light of the precepts of this origin. Its object is to reconcile points of difference between these well known hypotheses and to present relationships more widely applicable to comminution studies.

To OBTAIN the best results from hammer drills, close attention must be paid to two factors in drill maintenance, which are of equal importance; one is lubrication, the other is the shank. With the exception of stoping drills, most modern rock drills require both oil and grease. The oil ports are in the lubricator, on or behind the hammer cylinder; the grease port for the lubrication of the 'chuck sleeve and rotating mechanism is on the chuck end. Ordinary machine oil is not, adapted to rock drills; a heavier more gelatinous oil such as castor machine oil or liquid-grease should be used. The lubricators should be filled-once for every 12 or 14 ft. (3.5 to 4m.), of hole drilled. Grease-guns should be used to fill the port in the chuck end once a shift; a medium ( No. 3) grease is well adapted to this purpose. Hard grease must not be put into- the lubricators, as it will not flow through that part. Contrary to the popular belief, oiling a machine once or twice a shift does not provide sufficient lubrication; the drills should be oiled once for every 12 or 14 ft. of, hole drilled. The rotating handle of a stoping drill -is an oil reservoir and is provided with a port for oiling. The rotating handle is packed with wicking, or similar material, which causes the oil to feed slowly from the handle to the other parts of the machine. Stoping drills require oil at. least twice a shift; lighter oils than castor, such as Arctic Ammonia may be used.

During the year 1934 there were no new or extraordinary developments in the proven fields. With few exceptions all companies operating in these fields continued intensive exploitation programs on their old properties in an attempt to maintain the normal production of former years. In one or two instances these exploitation activities have had such marked success that the total production for 1934 slightly surpassed that of 1933. The most striking increase in production is that shown by the Kilometer 27 pool of the Comodoro Rivadavia field. However, this increase cannot be attributed to intensive drilling, since it is the result of a more uniform daily withdrawal distributed among all the productive wells. The Province of Salta also showed another increase, so that, judging from the statistics of the past three years and in view of proposed exploration projects, the future may reveal some interesting developments in this province. One of the most interesting occurrences in Salta is the discovery, though not yet considered commercial, made at Macueta, near the boundary line between the Argentine and Bolivia. This exploration well was drilled by the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey and is the northernmost exploratory well in the republic. The oil from this well is of the same type and commercial value as that produced in the San Pedro and Lomitas fields. The producing horizon is also the same as that in the other Salta fields; that is, the Paleozoic Permo-Carboniferous.

Dispersion-strengthened sintered aluminum products are normally manufactured from surface-oxidized aluminum powder, SAP,' or from atomized aluminum powder.' The powder-blending technique consisting in mechanical mixing of the constituents has been used in the manufacture of numerous dispersion-strengthening alloys, but has never been successfully applied to aluminum alloys. This technique may, however, be applicable if it is possible to produce an unagglomerated mixture of the constituents in the form of fine powders, and the present study was initiated to test this assumption in the aluminum/aluminum oxide system.3 Table I lists the two grades of aluminum powder and the aluminum oxide powder used in the manufacture of the alloys. MD 105 A is an aluminum powder with an average grain size less than 5 IJ., which is isolated from the MD 105 powder by centrifugal separation in cyclohexanol. The aluminum powders and the aluminum oxide were blended in a high-speed blender and then subjected to cold compaction and hot compaction at 550" to 600°C. Subsequently the compacts were hot-extruded with an extrusion ratio of 15 to 1. The alloys were evaluated by tensile testing at room temperature and at 400°C, microscopic examination, and heat treatment at 500°C followed by tensile testing at room temperature. For the purpose of comparison, a commercial SAP quality supplied by Swiss Aluminium Ltd. was tested in the same manner. The drilling for and production of crude oil in the Lima-Indiana and Michigan fields were directly and profoundly affected by the severe strain to which the petroleum industry was subjected during the year 1931. Serious and long-continued overproduction in the large flush areas of the western and southwestern fields, coupled with a nationwide decrease in the annual rate of consumption-increase, served to precipitate ‡ This curve is the Mid-Continent price for 38" gravity crude and hence. affords a basis for estlmating the influence of general factors upon the price structure m these fields. a mid-year economic depression which was functionally reflected in every producing area in the United States. A study of the curves of price changes in portions of the central west territory (Fig. 1) will demonstrate this relationship as well as the ensuing upward trend, which developed when pressure was artificially relieved, at least for the time being, in the producing areas in the southwestern states. Many methods for the determination of gold or silver, or both, in cyanide solutions have been published, which with care in manipulation, and modification in some cases, will give results that are satisfactory. It is possible to classify or group these methods as follows: 1. Evaporating the solution in a porcelain or agate-ware dish containing litharge,l or in a "boat" made of lead foil. 2. Forming a lead sponge containing the precious metals by means of zinc shavings,2 zinc dust,3 or a piece of aluminum.4 3. Decomposing the cyanide solution with an acid and precipitating the precious metals by the use of one or a combination of some of the following: Copper sulphate,5 sodium sulphite,6 hydrogen sulphide,' cement copper.ll 4. Precipitating the silver by zinc dust held in a Gooch crucible and determination with a standard solution of sulphocyanate.9 5. Electrolysis.l0 . 6. Colorimetry.ll

The problems associated with the processing of the Tilden ore are very much representative of the problems encountered in plants processing fine grained magnetic and nonmagnetic iron ores. I would like to comment on some of the problems mentioned in Dr. Nummela'spaper and add to his list of research opportunities in the processing of iron ores. Grinding, the most important step in the processing of fine grained iron ores, is synonymous with liberation. One grinds to separate discrete grains of minerals from the gangue. By convention- al grinding in tumbling mills, mostly random size reduction is achieved with relatively little preferential liberation of minerals. Not only are discrete particles broken that should not be broken, but damage is done to the mineral surfaces. The combination of over- grinding and surface damage shows up in lower recovery figures and higher grinding costs. What is obviously needed is a better comminution process that is more discriminating and that would permit liberating mineral particles at the coarsest possible size with a minimum production of fines. Laboratory attempts at such preferential grinding have been quite successful, but technological difficulties have unfortunately prevented its use. Impact grinding is a good example of a new comminution process that has not been accepted because of equipment problems. Either these problems have to be solved or new comminution systems have to be developed to reduce grinding costs and improve liberation. In his paper Dr. Nummela mentions the change in the primary mill throughput that occurs during the winter months. Seasonal changes in the operation of the grinding circuit and other unit operations have been observed in many plants, and many explanations for this phenomenon have been advanced. It is known that multicomponent powders are mostly nonhomogeneous. This paper investigates the effects of nonhomogeneity of composition and grain size on the melting point and the sinterability of compact taking into account homogenization mass transport and the length of the diffusion path in solid state sintering, and the kinetics of liquid phase formation in liquid phase sintering. After a discussion on the ideal characteristics of a powder for sintering and low temperature reaction, the main conventional processes are compared. Finally we develop the freeze-drying technique and demonstrate the capabilities and the limits of the process by some examples, mainly in the ceramics field.

The overall success of many strip coal mining operations depends primarily upon the efficient use of draglines to remove overburden. These machines require enormous capital investment and unless used efficiently the profitability of a venture is adversely affected. It is important that the dragline works continuously and it is imperative that the walking path and other facets of its operation be predetermined exactly so that the desired production rate is achieved with a minimum of non-productive time. Details of dragline operations which are of particular interest are walking path, prediction of best cut and positioning to maximize production, the angle of swing which produces the swiftest operation, optimum fill factor allowable for the type of material and conditions of ground, the maximum depth from which it can excavate and operating level with respect to the elevation of the high wall. The aims of the present paper are: 1. To establish a cut-off point in the cost-depth ratio. 2. Predict the most economic method of stripping in a given area using graphical plots of walking path implemented with information necessary to ensure optimum production. The optimum operating efficiency of the dragline in relation to the terrain and other conditions imposed on its operation will be evaluated. The model is based upon operating data which has been collected from site observations of a large strip coal mining operation in Central Queensland, Australia.

ONE of the most important contributions to the art of electrolytic zinc production-has been the aluminum cathode. This has been used in all major production: since its commercial development in 1916. The literature is replete with important contributions, some of which may have been replaced by better ones, but thus far there appears no other metal to take the place of aluminum as cathode material. Credit for this innovation goes to Sherard Cowper Coles, of England. When experi-menting on the extraction of-zinc from Broken Hill ore at Hayle, Cornwall, in 1893, he introduced the aluminum cathode, and in 1895 obtained British Patent-No. 20073. The reason for this dominant position of aluminum as cathode mate-rial in zinc sulphate electrolytes is its unique surface, to which electro-deposited metals usually do not tightly adhere. The metal must be of high purity for best results. It is possible to develop a starting-sheet method by which thin electro-deposited sheets of cathode zinc are made and stripped from a smooth aluminum plate. Such thin sheets of cathode zinc may be used as arc tine copper sheets in standard electrolytic copper-refinery practice. However, complications arise because of extreme warping of the zinc starting sheet after a .few hours of deposition, and thus special arrangements must be made to compensate for this abnormality.
