IN the present century the coal and manufactured gas industries have been eclipsed in public interest by oil, natural gas, and hydro- electric energy, which have had the benefit of rapid development and novelty. I sometimes wish that our social- order were such that hydro power had been developed first, that the use of gas from coal had never been seriously considered, and that our domestic energy requirements were supplied by other fuels. Sup- pose the manufacture of gas from coal should then come on the scene at the present time with the current plight of the railroads, coal regions, and labor generally, presenting the fact that it could increase the amount of coal mined and shipped by the railroads by some 16,000,000 tons, and increase the coal used at existing u plants five times. Imagine the great public interest that would be manifested; it would supply the cooking and water-heating requirements of a community with a superior character of service at a cost to the customer approximately half that which had obtained previously. Would not such a situation be heralded as the salvation of our country and all help be given it?

Alaska is a land of immense proportions and resources. Its very name, derived from an Aleut term, means "The Great Land." Yet, in a state slightly larger than Texas, California, and Montana combined, there are presently only two-large scale mines in production, excluding dredge operations. Once referred to by its territorial governor as "a storehouse of minerals," Alaska is, in the opinion of many industry observers, at least 20 years away from a healthy, productive mining industry. The mineral potential of the state is tremendous: coal deposits on the North Slope alone have been hypothetically pegged at 1.5 trillion tons. Copper-zinc deposits on the south flank of the Brooks Range are conservatively estimated to be worth $4 billion to $6 billion. During the last 25 years, multistage mixer-settlers have been used extensively for liquid ion exchange work. The mixer-settler has the advantage of being a compact device in which a large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area. They are particularly advantageous for the separation of rare earths. Most of the adjacent rare earths have separation factors which are near one, which means that a large number of stages are needed to produce a good separation. When two elements (m, n) are extracted simultaneously, the separation factor (ßm, n) is defined as: [ ] where Ym, Yn are the molarities of the respective elements in the organic phase and Xm, Xn, are their molarities in the aqueous phase at equilibrium. The industrial consumption of rare earth oxides rose to over 6800 tons in 1968, an increase of 33% over 1967.1 The increased production and demand for rare earth and lanthanum chlorides for petroleum cracking catalysts was one of the principal factors in this increased consumption of rare earths. In 1968 approximately 59% of the rare earth oxides produced were used for gasoline cracking catalysts in the form of rare earth and lanthanum chlorides. There was also an increase in the sales of lanthanum oxides for use in optical lenses and in fiber optics. The future looks good for the rare earth industry. The rare earths can be expected to be used in many new products which are being developed. Until the late 1950's tributyl phosphate (TBP) was the principal solvent used in rare earth liquid ion exchange. In 1957 Peppard3 reported the use of di (2-ethyl-hexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as a solvent for separating the rare earths. EVERYONE is familiar with the story of the poor Indian and his leaking tepee. He couldn't repair the leak while it was raining, naturally. And when it wasn't raining, where was the incentive? Even if this traditional Indian was apochryphal, his counterparts are certainly alive today, and operating on a world-wide scale. - A recent issue of the Wall Street Journal, for example, carried an impassioned letter from an old cocoa planter, who wants the world to know why the price of cocoa has gone skyrocketing. For years, he says, British and American interests have bought cocoa at the cheapest possible price and, incidentally, from growers willing to sell at that price. Between them, they didn't put enough money back into the business, either to fight disease in the cocoa groves or to plant new cocoa trees. Until new trees are planted and come into bearing, we will be paying exorbitant prices for our cocoa, and getting less of it.

THE object of this investigation was to determine whether silver alloys could be used instead of the currently employed insert of high-expansion AVERAGE COEFFICIENT PER DE G. C. A typical example of a piston containing a ferronickel insert is shown in Fig. 1. The high coefficient of expansion of silver made it worthy of consideration, while the small size of the insert would render it use feasible in Germany as an emergency in is- tire. The coefficients of linear expansion of several metals and alloys are as shown in the table above. Obviously the melting point of the insert must be high enough to prevent it from melting when the light alloy is cast around it. This imposes a lower limit of about 850° C. for the solidus of the silver alloy. Pure silver melts at about 961° C., so that the Fin. 1.-PISTON CONTAINING tolerable depression in the solidus is rather FERRONICKEL INSERT. small. To avoid deformation of the insert during use a Brinell hardness number of at least 60 appears necessary.

The enterprises based upon the industrial minerals are diversified in geologic habit, mining systems, processing techniques and marketing methods. Nevertheless, in 1972 these enterprises faced many of the same frustrations and hopes and knotty problems and crucial decisions. Volume and profits were generally improved but were uneven in extent and effect. The U.S. cement industry, for example, was unable to meet demand in major markets. It was constricted by a frozen low-level price structure, faced expensive pollution control measures and watched heavy imports penetrating its markets from several European nations, Mexico and Canada.

The classic theory of pressure build-up in shut-in oil wells as developed by Horner and van Everdingen is based on two-dimensional radial symmetry in the well-reservoir system. Such symmetry does not exist in the case of a well which parfiially penetrates the producing formation. As a result of this lack of symmetry the use of the classic theory in such cases become questionable. In this paper the mathematical theory has been extended to include the case of partially penetrating wells. Numerical solutions illustrating the up-dication of the equations are presented. The effect of partial penetration on pressure build-up is shown by a comparison of synthetic pressure build-up curves derived from the numerical solution of the equation for partially penetrating wells for various degrees of penetration. It is shown that partial penetration is detectable from the characteristic shape of the pressure build-up curve and that formation productivity may be calculated from the pressure buildup data in a manner identical to that described by the classic theory. INTRO DUCTION The use of pressure build-up data on shut-in oil wells is a well-established technique for the measurement of reservoir productivity. The work of Homer' and van Everdingen' is well known. Since the publication of their pioneering work, others"' have elaborated and extended the technique. These authors have dealt exclusively with the case of wells that completely penetrate he producing formation. Two-dimensional radial symmetry is achieved, thereby, and the problem is greatly simplified. This ideal situation is seldom encountered in practice. But, in spite of this, the technique is often employed anyway. The question, therefore, arises: how much confidence can be placed in the results of such calculations when the data are taken on wells that only partially penetrate the producing formation? It is the purpose of this work to answer this question. Only the single-phase fluid case will be considered. van Everdigen' has presented a rigorous solution of the two-dimensional case, but because of mathematical complexity, this solution has not proved to be particularly useful. Horner' utilized Kelvin's point source solution in two dimensions and showed that it is a sufficiently good approximation for oil reservoir studies. The geometry of the well and the producing formation is illustrated in Fig. l. Geometrically the formation may be described as an infinite slab. In the year 1948, more than ever before, the coal industry established itself on the threshold of a new and exciting future expansion. While production did not equal the wartime and peacetime peaks of 1944 and 1947, it was, in review, a good coal year. During the latter part of the year a combination of mild weather, record stock piling, and general business slackening reduced coal demand to the extent that marginal mines suspended operations, while mines remaining active found it necessary to renew their attention to producing better products at lower operating costs.

I. HISTORICAL. BARITE has been mined for many years in various parts of Virginia, probably the earliest mining-operations being in Prince William county, within 600 ft. of the Fauquier county line, about 4 miles south of east from Catlett, a station on the Southern Railway. It is claimed that the mineral was mined here as early as 1845. Mining-operations in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties in the Piedmont region, and near Marion in Smyth county, in the southwest Virginia Valley region, were begun about 30 years ago. The mining and milling of barite on a commercial scale in Tazewell and Russell counties are more recent, and commenced about 15 years ago. II. GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL DISTRIBUTION. Barite occurs in many counties in the State, as shown in Fig. 1, but the industry has been confined to only a few of them. Its occurrence is noted in two of the three major divisions of the State-namely, the Piedmont region east of the Blue Ridge, and the Paleozoic area west of the Blue Ridge. In the Piedmont region the mineral has been mined in the following counties:, Bedford, Campbell, Louisa, Prince William, and Pittsylvania. In the region west of the Blue Ridge, composed of Paleozoic sediments, barite has been mined in Montgomery, Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell counties. Of the counties mentioned, Bedford, Campbell, and Pittsylvania of the Piedmont region, and Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell of the Valley region, have been the principal producers. In 1906, operations were confined to five counties-Bedford, Louisa, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell-but in the first two counties named there was no production, the work being solely development.

Monotonous flood planes flanked either side of the road as we drove in the embassy car from the airport to downtown Seoul. We crossed the brown waters of the Hann River, meandering over mud flats. A great, gnarled tree bore beautiful fall colors of gold. "That is a Ginko Tree, the oldest living fossil, probably a hundred million years old;" said Jean W. Pressler. Compared to other cities of the Far East, the traffic in and around Seoul was sedate. Few motorcycles or bicycles, and little superfluous horn tooting. "This is the best season in Korea. We have long beautiful springs and falls," said Pressler, chief of the mining branch of USAID, and he continued with a briefing on the country.

SOMETIMES the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appears to be a strictly technical society, and if so my paper should deal with the technical operations of finding and producing gold. But I have not been engaged in practical gold mining since 1910. What I have been doing mainly for the last 25 years is to try to figure out what the income of a mine-gold, or any other-would be worth to an investor. So I have been in contact with gold mining, in one way or another, for some 42 years. I say that with a purpose. In that time the industry has been through one of its cycles. The value of gold mines is very dif¬ferent at different points in one of these cycles. For this reason the cycle of gold mining is a highly practical study. The cycle of gold is a more or less rhythmical change in its value or purchasing power measured in the grand average of other commodities, which is the same thing as its price. Taking the price of gold in 1897 as a stand¬ard, a dollar at that time declined to 55c. in 1913, to 26.8c. in 1920, and since then it has risen to 47.4c. in 1930 and to about 64c. in 1932. It is worth about 21/ times as much now as it was in 1920, but less than two¬thirds as much as in 1897. When this change is applied to the value of a gold mine still greater differences are evident. The cost of producing gold is of course measured in labor and other commodities, and as that cost goes down the margin of profit measured in the gold itself increases. Thus a mine which might make only 10 per cent profit in 1920 on its gross output may easily make 25 per cent now. The stockholder gets 2 ½ times more gold that is worth 2 1/2 times as much in purchasing power, therefore the real value of his holding has risen by the one factor multiplied by the other, giving him 61/4 times as much goods or services as he had in 1920.

AS this is written, the probability A is that the bituminous coal out- put for 1936 will approximate 420,000,000 tons (of 2000 lb.) with an average working time for all mines of 205 days. The results for 1935 approximated 369,224,000 tons, with the mines working about 185 days. The increase in production of 14 per cent is heartening. In anthracite, it is probable that the preliminary figures covering output for 1935, 51,- 003,000 tons, will be exceeded this year although the percentage of in- crease will almost certainly be small. The substantial tonnage of anthracite illegally mined, estimated to be 3,600,- 000 tons in 1935, with a similar large Lonnage in 1936, is in addition to the figure given above; it represents an open and flagrant disregard of law and property rights. It is hard to understand why the officials of the State of Pennsylvania do not enforce the laws against theft and brigandage, more so when the legitimate employees of the established producing proper-

Shallow underground voids resulting from early coal mining and other resource recovery activities over the past several decades are now being recognized as a significant cause of ground subsidence problems. Uncertain knowledge of abondoned coal mines also imposes potential hazards in current underground mining operations, since water inundation or the release of methane gas is a serious hazard when mine excavation operations break into an abandoned mine. Requirements for detecting and mapping subversive manmade tunnels in previous work has led to the development of a surface-operated automatic earth resistivity survey system and associated computer data reduction process for military applications. Field demonstration tests of this system have resulted in successful detection of tunnels at depth-to-diameter ratios greater than 10 to one. Under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines, a similar high-resolution earth resistivity system was designed and constructed for use as a potential means of detecting abandoned coal mine workings. The hardware and software aspects of third new system are described together with applications of the method for surveying and mapping abandoned coal mine workings. Field tests are presented to illustrate the detection of both air-filled and water-filled mine workings.

Time variations in the copper content of the sediments of streams draining mineralized areas were studied in two areas of contrasting climatic environment, one in northern and one in southern British Columbia. In each area, samples were collected and observations made of rainfall, stream discharge and air and water temperature at intervals throughout the summer season. Samples were analyzed for total and cold-extractable copper. Results showed a weak inverse relation between cold-extractable copper and discharge in two out of the three test sites in the southern area, and a decrease in ratio of COld-extractable to total copper over the duration of the test period at a highly anomalous site in the northern area. In suspended rock flour resulting from glacial erosion of mineralized rock in the northern area, virtually all the copper was found to be soluble in cold, dilute hydrochloric acid. None of the variations observed is sufficient to cause serious problems in geochemical sediment surveys. Systematic collection and trace analysis of stream sediments has seen wide application in recent years as a method of primary prospecting in primitive areas. Common practice is to collect fine-grained samples of sediment either from the active channel or from the flood plain near the channel. Samples are dried, sieved and the -80-mesh fraction analyzed after breakdown of the sample by a relatively strong attack, such as by fusion or by treatment with hot perchloric acid. Drying, sieving and rigorous chemical attack requires established facilities, either in a well equipped central laboratory or in base camp. Thus analysis for total metal involves a substantial delay from the time the samples are collected until the analytical data can be reported. An alternative system uses a cold aqueous extrac-tant in place of the hot acid or flux.4 Advantages of the cold-extraction techniques are that kits can be prepared for use directly at the sample site and that, in some problems, the patterns in cold-extractable metal, usually abbreviated cxMe, are more useful as ore guides than the patterns in total metal.' In the course of operational geochemical sediment surveys, a problem that has come up repeatedly is failure to reproduce anomalous values or patterns by resampling the same areas. The mystery of the vanishing anomaly has led to speculation as to whether there is a significant variation in the metal content of sediment samples with the weather or with the time of year. Review of the published literature shows that a number of experiments have been carried out on time variations in the metal content of stream water.1,2,5,7-9 The only published report on time variations in stream sediments that has come to the authors' attention, however, is by Govett,3 working in Northern Rhodesia.

Prospecting is certainly the world's biggest and best gambling business. It is a game where the chips cost many thousands and where many millions, even billions, can be won. An attractive feature of this gamble is the fact that the players are free to rig the odds as favorably as possible. Only the limited bounty of nature, the restrictions of the laws of the land, the competition from other players, the limited sagacity of the player himself— only these, and other factors, restrict the possibilities for large winnings. Today probably about half the land surface of the earth remains to be searched for signs of ore visible at the surface. It is fortunate that so much land still remains for exploration by relatively economical methods. Looking to the future, it is a good guess that the costs of finding ore will increase in response to increasing technical difficulties. To continue to achieve profits from prospecting, it will become necessary to analyze the business more skillfully, in a more and more sophisticated manner. Whenever feasible, qualitative concepts must be replaced by their quantitative equivalents, improvements, and extensions. THE GAMBLE The fact that prospecting is a gambling business reminds us at once of the elementary rule known as the law of gambler's ruin. I hesitate to mention so simple a rule in this company of experts. This rule expresses the rather serious chance of going broke when the odds for success are small, merely by a normal run of bad luck regardless of the long-run expectations of gain. The only sure way of avoiding this special risk of gambler's ruin is to have enough capital, and the will, to continue the play many times and thus ride out the inevitable runs of bad luck. For example, if the probability of success is one in ten for each venture, there is a 35 pct chance that ten successive ventures will fail in a row. But if one has the capital to continue the play through a run of 100 failures, then the chance of gambler's ruin is only 5 in 100,000. Almost any management, I suppose, would be under terrific pressure to cease the play during a long run of bad luck. To continue to prospect under such circumstances requires great confidence in the premises, and a firm conviction in the long-term expectation of profit. There is evidence which I shall mention that in the future even the strongest companies may not have the necessary capital to prospect on the ideal scale. Joint ventures will be very desirable as a means for extending the available venture
