Experiments on the separation of copper and zinc ions by selective action of ion exchange resins showed the carboxylic type to be more effective than the sulphonic resins. The latter demonstrated a greater capacity over a wider pH range. Data show the effectiveness of resins as a means of concentration. IN recent years the restrictions of stream pollution laws and the high price of metals have created an interest in ion exchange as a means for metal recovery. Some applications have proved successful. In Germany during World War 11, 17 tons of copper per day were recovered from rayon mill wastes by means of ion exchange resins;' and for some time in this country a large ion exchange unit has been in operation for the recovery of copper from rayon waste water. The possibilities of applying ion exchange to the recovery of metals occurring in plating rinse water is particularly promising. In most of these applications only the metal being recovered occurs in the waste. The ion exchange resins act merely as a means of concentrating the metals to a point where they can be recirculated. It would be highly desirable to use ion exchange as a means of not only concentrating but also of separating metals. With the exception of the impressive separations accomplished in connection with the atomic energy program, very little has been done on metal separations.' Therefore, an investigation was undertaken at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy to determine if either of the two main types of ion exchange resins could be used to separate metal ions in solution. The selective removal of copper ions from a mixture of copper and zinc on carboxylic and sulphonic-type resins was investigated as a function of flow rate, pH, copper-zinc ratio, and concentration. It was shown that zinc can be separated from copper and that very large ratios of concentration can be obtained using ion exchange resins. Since ion exchange is relatively new to the field of metallurgy, a brief review of the subject will be included. Theory of Ion Exchange A comprehensive theory for ion exchange has not been developed as yet, but the mechanisms are analogous to metathetical reactions: R Na + Cu++ *=? K(SO3)2 Cu + 2Na+ R is the designation for the ion exchange resin. If a copper solution is passed over a resin bed in the sodium form, two ions of sodium will be released for every ion of copper removed. For the most part this reaction follows the laws of mass action and of electrical neutrality. Consequently, if an excess of sodium ions is passed over a bed containing copper, the reactions will be reversed, and the resin will be regenerated to its original form. A few empirical rules governing the exchange reaction have been set forth: 1—In general ions with a high valence will replace ions with a lower valence. 2—Ions having higher activity coefficients have a higher replacement potential. 3—In a series of mono-valent ions, those with the smallest radii of hydra-tion will tend to replace those having larger radii of hydration. 4—Where ions are similar in most respects, those with the higher atomic weight sometimes will take precedence. This last rule is not as definite as some of the others. These rules apply to rather dilute solutions at moderate temperatures and assume all ions to be present in about equal concentrations. Higher concentrations and temperatures may in some cases reverse the normal exchange reactions. Ion exchange materials are unique in that their efficiency increases as the concentration of the solution decreases. For many exchangers, most efficient operation is obtained at concentrations in the order of one thousandths of a percent. Most applications, though, are made in solutions containing considerably higher concentrations than this. Coste9 as shown that ion exchange resins will remove aluminum and iron effectively' from solutions of up to 10 pct chromic acid. Ion Exchange Resins Ion exchange resins are insoluble, porous, resinous structures to which active groups have been attached. Active groups such as (—SO,,)- and (COO)- pick up cations; hence structures saturated with groups such as these are called cation exchangers. Structures saturated with groups such as (—NH,)' which pick up anions, are referred to as anion exchangers. The resinous structure of necessity is resistant to strong acids, bases, oxidizing, and reducing agents, and most of the common organic solvents. An idea of the stability can be gaged from the fact that resins last for many years under constant use without detectable chemical or physical breakdown. The ion exchange reaction is not confined to the surface of these synthetic resins. Its porous structure permits active groups in the center of a particle as well as those on the surface to remove ions. A high capacity resin such as Amberlite IR-120 will remove up to 3.3 lb Cu per cu ft of resin. In this investigation several approaches to the problem of separating copper from zinc by ion exchange were considered. S EVERAL FACTORS have brought about a vastly greater interest in the gold-mining industry in the last two or three years. Outstanding is the fact that there is an open market at a fixed price for all that can be produced. a condition that holds for no other commodity. Costs of production have decreased greatly, owing to lower prices of supplies and equipment and lower wages. Improved metallurgical processes and equipment are also available. To big new gold district is being opened up but virgin ground is being prospected with some success in many of the more remote parts of the world and right here in the United States many old properties are being reopened 111 the light of present condition<, tailing dumps are being re- worked, and profitable leases taken on abandoned property. Many of the men who are becoming interested in gold are mining engineers whose experience has all been with base metals heretofore: some are engineers with no mining experience; some are not engineers at all but men who cannot find profitable employment in their usual field of activity and are attracted by the age-old lore of the yellow metal. Some are business men with a little money and an idea that under present conditions gold mining offers a safer investment for it than most other kinds of business. It is to those more or less inexperienced new- comers in the gold-mining industry that this article i4 ad dressed. Those who are connected with the large gold mines or who have had rears of experience with the small ones will find in the following pages little or nothing of interest but it is hoped that the newer generation of small mine operators, on whom the healthy growth of the industry depends so much, may find here some helpful hints.

Giving the keynote address in the final session of a conference dealing with closely related topics has a disadvantage in that much of what can be said has been said. It also has an advantage, however, because it presents the speaker with the opportunity to integrate and analyse the material presented by the various speakers. I would like to look to the near future in Australia and the United States of America, to the risks, problem areas, and changes of a rapidly evolving post-industrial era-an era we are beginning to experience where industry no longer &apos;calls the tune&apos;. We miners have been quick to point out and emphasize, that ours is a &apos;high-risk&apos; industry in the world of business and commerce. Yet, clearly those who have survived, and been successful, have learned to anticipate and cope with risk and change. This ability has been a &apos;distinguishing feature of the industry&apos;s leaders who, in market studies and commodity selection, exploration and development, mine planning, metallurgical pro- cessing, and general administration and operation 1. identify areas-of risk or inevitable change, 2. analyse, test and quantify those factors of risk or change, and 3. design methods, systems, equipment to eliminate, moderate, or control or economically compensate for predicted risks or changes.

DESPITE the meetings and discussions on over- production the situation still continues to grow worse instead of better. The demand for oil has dropped to 2,700,000 bbl. per day. On the other hand domestic production has risen to 2,700,000 bbl. with prospects of further increases, and if imports and natural gas-gasoline be added to this the current supply is about 3,100,000 bbl. per day. Though during the summer and early fall the demand may exceed this figure for a few months the prospects are that &apos;the average demand during 1929 will be at least 200,000 bbl. per day less than the present current supply, meaning additions to stocks over the year of about 75,000,000 bbl.

A PROPER consideration of this subject is not confined to the technical channels of production and metallurgy. It concerns an industry, and should cover economic aspects which are of material importance in any program of development. The discussion may logically be treated under three subdivisions, as follows: (1) manufacture, (2) characteristics related to quality of material; (3) adaptability and exploitation of product. MANUFACTURE OF WROUGHT IRON The manufacture of wrought iron is the most ancient art of the ferrous metal industry. The eighty years or less of existence of processes identified with our modern "Age of Steel" is a relatively brief interval compared with the several thousand years associated with the production of wrought iron by man. From the primitive early methods of production, manufacture for many centuries followed the line of direct reduction. There were developments as experience was gained through the years; but man&apos;s needs for a strong, ductile, forgeable product were met by reducing the ore to metallic iron in a single-stage operation. Following the development several centuries ago of what has become our modern blast-furnace operation, manufacture of wrought iron was gradually transformed into a two-stage method of first producing cast iron and then refining this to the desired degree of forgeability; the forerunner in principle of today&apos;s scheme of manufacture of steel. The product retained the essential characteristics of highly refined base metal with iron-silicate slag incorporation, which were associated with the material resulting from direct reduction methods. Cort&apos;s invention of the puddling process in 1784 is a landmark in wrought-iron manufacture. Efficient visible light emission from p-n junctions in semiconductors is currently achieved in the four materials, Sic, GaP, ]Ga1-xAs and GaAs1-x,. Recent advances in materials preparation and p-n junction formation are briefly reviewed. The radiative recombination processes in the different materials depend largely on the band structure and the impurity states of each material. The spectral distribution of the emission ranges from the blue in Sic, to green in Gap, yellow in Sic and red in Gap, Ga1-x AlxAs and GaAs1-x Px. The origin of the various processes are discussed. The conversion of the electrical power into optical power and the measurement of the conversion efficiency are reviewed. The currently maximum quantum efficiencies at 300°K are: 3 pct in GaP(red), 1 pct in SiC(yellow), 0.1 pct in GaP(green), 0.2 pct in Ga1-x AlxAs at 66001, and 0.1 pct in GaAs1-x Px at 6800. The brightness and the interplay of the quantum efficiency and the luminous efficiency are given detailed consideration. VISIBLE light generated by the application of a direct current to a semiconductor crystal was first observed by Lossev1 in 1923. Light emission came from naturally occurring junctions in Sic crystals but little was known then with regard to the mechanism of charge transport and light emission. Some nearly 30 years later and with a vastly increased understanding of semiconductors the phenomenon of electroluminescence was studied in more detail, for example in p-n junctions of germanium.2 In these early studies, the efficiency of converting the electron current into a photon current was very low and therefore aroused little interest toward practical application. More recently it became apparent that in certain materials, for instance GaAs, and under certain conditions, the conversion efficiency was not low at all.3 The subsequent discovery of the p-n junction laser4-6 provided the impetus for increased studies of electroluminescence. Light emitted from GaAs occurs in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum and is not visible to the eye. At nearly the same time the use of GaAs1-xPx led to laser action at low temperatures which was visible to the eye.7 Later a red light emitting diode, made from Gap, was reportedS which emitted incoherent radiation at 300°K with an external quantum efficiency of about 1.5 pct. The fact that such efficient devices were obtainable led to a more concentrated effort in the search for highly efficient room-temperature semiconductor light sources. It is some of this later work on p-n junction luminescence with which we will be concerned here. Since our aim is centered on visible light, with hv =1.8 ev ( ?=7000?), only the wider band gap semiconductors are of interest, i.e., Eg 1 1.8 ev. Although many compounds meet this criterion, only a limited number of those are also good semiconductors, i.e. contain low resistance n and p regions. Some of the more promising candidates are listed in Table I. We will only be concerned with light generation from a p-n junction. This limitation excludes essentially the group II-VI binary compounds, although we will briefly review the case of ZnTe and the solid solution ZnTe1-xSex. As we will show they may contain a p-n junction but only of a special kind. Most of the discussion will deal with the four materials, Sic, Gap, Gal-xAlxAs, and GaAs1-xPx. These appear to be at the present time the best visible light emitting semiconductors. In the following sections we will briefly consider: 1) the electrical properties of p-n junctions; 2) some recent advances in materials preparation; 3) the formation of p-n junctions; and then in somewhat greater detail we will consider: 4) the various radiative recombination processes; 5) the measurement and observation of the external quantum efficiency; 6) the luminous efficiency; 7) the brightness of light emitting diodes (LED&apos;S). THE P-N JUNCTION The p-n junction in a semiconductor crystal is the interface between two differently doped regions. More specifically the p region is doped predominantly with acceptor impurities and the n region contains predominantly donor impurities. The energy band structure of a degenerate p-n junction at thermal equilibrium is shown in Fig. l(a). The excess electrons on the n side of the junction are confined to this region by the barrier potential Eg. Similarly the excess holes on the p-side of the junction are confined to the p-region by a similar potential barrier. If we now apply a dc voltage V such that the p region is made positive and the n region negative, the barrier potential EB is reduced by the applied voltage, V and the junction is said to be forward biased. With the barrier potential lowered, electrons and holes can drift toward the p region and n region, respectively, see Fig. l(b). The current voltage characteristics of p-n junctions in most wide band gap materials can be described by the relation: J = Joexp(eV/BkT) [1] where the functional form of Jo is determined by the recombination mechanism. Jo is generally a complicated parameter which depends on a number of different factors including temperature, junction width, bias voltage, and carrier lifetimes. The parameter B also depends on the recombination mechanism but

WITHOUT in any way detracting from the credit due those engineer-miners of copper who operate with power shovels, it may be said that compared with block-caving underground their work is simplicity itself. True enough, ingenuity and foresight of high order are required to lay out an open-cut operation to the best advantage; good organization and intelligent care and use of machinery are required to achieve minimum costs. But really successful undercut block-caving demands all this; and, in addition, it requires a conception and application of unseen natural forces that reflect a type of genius that is rare. Assuming that preparatory work has gained access to the orebody, mining of whatever kind consists essentially of three operations: 1. Breaking the ore "in place," as Nature left it, into pieces small enough for convenient handling. 2. Loading these pieces into some kind of a vehicle on wheels. 3. Transporting the broken ore to some central plant on the surface where the process of extracting the valuable metals can be commenced. In shovel mining, dynamite and steam or electric power are used-with remarkable efficiency, be it said-to accomplish each of these three processes. In underground-caving methods the old force of gravity is called upon to accomplish, in large part, processes 1 and 2. To do this with success is an artistic achievement of a sort. Put it another way. The earlier methods of underground mining constituted a translation of surface procedure to an underground theater. The ore was blasted and dug out in small quantities; in its place were put props, usually of timber, to prevent the caving of the rock above; and men toiled with

1. Introduction.-THE methods of production of sound steel ingots have been described in several papers read recently before this Institute. It was thought by Director Stratton, of the U. S. Bureau of Standards, and ourselves to be of sufficient interest and importance, as a further contribution to this subject, to compare the properties of rails rolled in one mill according to American practice, from several types of ingot of substantially the same chemical composition but cast by several processes; and to compare in considerable detail the properties of an ingot manufactured by the Hadfield special-feeding process and one of the usual type for rolling into rails. We are greatly indebted to F. W. Wood, President of the Maryland Steel Co., who made this investigation possible by kindly placing his rail mill at our disposal; and he and his associates at Sparrows Point did everything possible to make the experiment a success, including the execution of several of the tests and analyses. 2. Classification and Manufacture of Ingots.-Of the ingots used in this investigation, eight were made in Sheffield and furnished by Sir Robert Hadfield, and one was made and furnished by an American steel company,&apos; as a comparison ingot, and was supposed to represent the usual type of ingot from which rails are made.

OUT of the depths of each business cycle we emerge with a stimulus for greater efficiency and a realization of progress in industrial technique. The recent years have not been an exception to this rule, and in retrospect we sense that significant advances have been made in mining practices on the Mesabi Range, with emphasis on speed of production and economy of operation. A survey of such changes does not reveal anything that is fundamentally or basically new, but it is apparent that ideas and machines that have found wide application in industry elsewhere, with necessary modifications, are being put to productive use in mining iron ore. Innovations in transporting and conveying ore from the open pits stand out with greatest prominence, so that, in the main, it will be with these features that this paper will treat, in the review of progress made to this date. The late years have witnessed the development of small deposits for open-pit operation, the cleaning up of pits nearing exhaustion, and in two large operations the approach to the limit for haulage by steam locomotives, owing to grades, making it necessary to recover the ore in slopes, track benches and below the power-shovel limit by a milling and scram operation. For several years small standard-type dump trucks have been used in clean-up or scram operations within the pits, but during the seasor1 of 1936 the first effort was made to use heavy truck haulage in the transportation of stripping and iron ore. The new units in use today vary from 15 to 20 tons in capacity, and are equipped with powerful gasoline or Diesel engines and supplemented by trailers or wagons on rubber or crawler treads. The Diesel engine finds favor with most operators because of fuel economy. These units develop upward of 125 hp. in the 15-ton trucks. The speed of these trucks varies from 2 miles per hour in low gear to 35 in high gear. The transmission affords 12 speeds forward and 3 speeds in reverse.

X-RAY analysis and single-crystal study have been utilized in recent years as a new means of following constitutional changes in alloys. If such transformations can be suppressed by rapid cooling, they can be followed at room temperature in a particularly convenient manner. In the following we shall consider changes in solubility and polymorphic transformations with particular reference to phenomena of the age-hardening type. Finally a thermodynamic viewpoint is developed for examining such transformations.

CRITICAL pH has been defined by Wark1 as that pH value below which a mineral will float and above which it will not float in solutions containing a given concentration of collector but free from other depressants or activators. - The relationship between mineral, collector concentration, and pH is expressed in the form of a critical pH curve determined by the captive bubble method and is generally regarded as being fundamental to the system involved. The mechanism of alkali depression is currently in dispute, two general theories having received authoritative support. The view expressed in Taggart&apos;s chemical theory of flotation2 is that in the presence of a critical concentration of hydroxyl ions, all the metal ions available at the surface of the mineral are present as anions of the form [M (OH)x]-y. The formation of the necessary metal xanthate is thus precluded and, furthermore, any metal xanthate coating previously formed, at a lower pH, will be dissolved. Gaudin3,4 and the Melbourne school under Ware hold that alkali depression is caused by the preferential adsorption of hydroxyl ions by the mineral surfaces. This paper describes an investigation of the mechanism of alkali depression in each of the three systems: cerussite-aqueous carbonate-xanthate, cerussite-xanthate, and galena-xanthate. Alkali Depression of Cerussite by Control of Carbonate Ion Concentration Wark and Cox6 have shown that in the presence of Na2CO3 a higher concentration of xanthate is required to effect bubble contact with a cerussite surface than in carbonate-free solutions. To examine this depression of cerussite by sodium carbonate, a series of captive bubble tests was carried out on cerussite specimens in solutions containing 100 mg per liter of potassium ethyl xanthate and varying concentrations of sodium carbonate. The pH was adjusted by the addition of dilute hydrochloric acid. For purposes of comparison a standard critical pH curve was determined for cerussite with potassium ethyl xanthate in solutions containing no added carbonate. In the latter case pH adjustment was made with sodium hydroxide. The experimental method employed in both series was broadly similar to that described by Wark and Cox;7-9 a number of refinements suggested by Sutherland10 were adopted, and the procedure was further developed and modified to suit the particular requirements of the investigation. The relationship between pH and the concentration of potassium ethyl xanthate necessary to induce bubble contact at cerussite surfaces is shown in Fig. 1. LAISVALL - ONE OF THE BOLIDEN MINES Until the Aitik Mine (2,000,000 mtpy) started in 1968 the Laisvall Mine (1,200,000 mtpy) was the biggest unit of about 20 producing mines, belonging to the Boliden Company Ltd. As shown in Fig. 1 the mines are spread over a wide area. Most of them are small complex ore mines (50,000 - 300,000 mtpy), for which reason the total mine production does not exceed 5,500,000 mtpy. When our company was invited to present a paper, Laisvall was chosen because it is the biggest European galena-mine in production today. The Laisvall Mine is situated in the county of Norrbotten, Sweden, at the eastern border of the Caledonian mountain-chain. The road distance to Slagnäs, the nearest railway station, is 60 miles. The railway between Slagnäs and BOLIDEN&apos;s smelting plant, the Rönnskär Works, is 140 miles long. PRODUCTION STARTED IN 1943 In the Autumn of 1938 a boulder was discovered, consisting of sandstone with galena, on the shore of the Lake Stor-Laisan. The boulder came from an Eocambrian sandstone formation, which is overlain by Cambrian-Silurian rock.

WHEN this study was started very little information was available, regarding the physical characteristics of West Virginia coals. This was particularly true of friability and of crushing strengths of the coals. Some work had been done on specific gravity studies but the available information applied to only a few coals. In practically all coal-classification systems thus far proposed, the predominating factors of classifications are largely based on the chemical characteristics of the coal. Recently some investigators have pointed out that a classification based on chemical and physical properties of coal might serve to place coals in their proper group better than classification systems based on chemical properties alone. One of the aims of this study was to obtain some data on the physical properties of coal which might help to properly classify West Virginia coals.

THE object of all classification is to group together things which are alike, and separate those which are unlike. This object is essentially a practical one, enabling us to apply past experience to new conditions: Many costly large-scale experiments lose half their importance for want of proper description of the coal used, and the consequent impossibility of predicting other coals will behave in the same way. I do not, therefore, make a fundamental distinction between "scientific" and "use" classifications, except in so far as use depends on conditions, such as size or impurities which are not related to the nature of the coal substance itself. The characters chosen to define the classes of coal must be such as are accompanied by as many other properties as possible. It is not to be expected that any system of classification will enable us to predict every property of coal, since all specimens have an individuality of their own. But specimens can be grouped by a number of resemblances into species. Further, species which resemble each other can be grouped into genera.

INTRODUCTION PLACER is a Spanish word, the definitions of which include "an extensive bank of sand or gravel" and "a place where currents of water deposit particles of gold."l The term, probably first used in the western hemisphere by Spanish or Mexican gold miners, is now generally applied to all detrital deposits that yield valuable minerals by washing. In the Western States placer products other than gold, including the silver alloyed with it, are chiefly sapphires, produced in Montana, and platinum alloys recovered in California and Oregon. During the war tungsten ore (scheelite) was obtained from placers in the Atolia district, California, and a number of diamonds have been found in the Sierra Nevada gold belt. Small amounts of stream tin have been produced in the Black Hills of South Dakota and a little monazite sand in the Boise Basin. Idaho. Magnetite, chromite, ilmenite, zircon, and other useful minerals are more or less abundant in the beach placers of the Pacific coast and in the heavy residues of placer mining elsewhere, but the problems of profitably separating and marketing them remain to be solved. Minerals of lead, quicksilver and other metals occur in many of the placers and although not plentiful enough as a rule to be worth recover-ng, their presence has, in several instances, led to the discovery of valuable lodes, notably at Leadville, Colorado. Historical summary.-In New Mesico, Arizona, and Southern California, placer gold was mined by Mexicans and Spanish priests in the first half of the 19th century or earlier. With these exceptions history of placer mining in the Western States begins with Marshall&apos;s discovery of gold in northern California in 1848. During the next twenty years placers were found in all of the principal mining districts that are known today. The recrystallization of cold-worked metals is studied ordinarily by determining the temperatures required for complete recrystallization to occur within a given arbitrary time period, usually within 15 min. to 2 hr. The results obtained are conventionally assembled in a three-dimensional diagram relating this temperature to the amount of cold-work (percentage deformation) and the resultant grain size, though sometimes other modes of representation are emp1oyed.l Such three-dimensional diagrams are not complete, for the number of variables exceeds the number represented. The process of recrystallization is characterized by a time-rate, a fact that is not portrayed upon ordinary recrystallization diagrams. It is known that recrystallization consists in the formation of new nuclei and the growth of these nuclei, a process that continues until the matrix is completely consumed and the original set of grains entirely replaced by the new. This knowledge is old.2 Truly heterogeneous reactions invariably proceed by nucleation and growth; the decomposition of eutectoid solid solutions provides an example about which much is known,3 and freezing, originally studied by Tammann, provides the classic example. Although recrystal- lization is not a heterogeneous reaction within the orthodox meaning of the term, the mechanism of the process is the same. The recrystallization of cold-worked metals is studied ordinarily by determining the temperatures required for complete recrystallization to occur within a given arbitrary time period, usually within 15 min. to 2 hr. The results obtained are conventionally assembled in a three-dimensional diagram relating this temperature to the amount of cold-work (percentage deformation) and the resultant grain size, though sometimes other modes of representation are emp1oyed.l Such three-dimensional diagrams are not complete, for the number of variables exceeds the number represented. The process of recrystallization is characterized by a time-rate, a fact that is not portrayed upon ordinary recrystallization diagrams. It is known that recrystallization consists in the formation of new nuclei and the growth of these nuclei, a process that continues until the matrix is completely consumed and the original set of grains entirely replaced by the new. This knowledge is old.2 Truly heterogeneous reactions invariably proceed by nucleation and growth; the decomposition of eutectoid solid solutions provides an example about which much is known,3 and freezing, originally studied by Tammann, provides the classic example. The practice of the cyanide-process of gold-extraction has brought to light many important contradictions of familiar chemical analogies, which still obscure both the theory and the practice of the art with distinctions subtler and more difficult to make or follow than those which delighted the heart of the old-time metaphysician. Yet Nature herself has drawn these distinctions; and if we hope to succeed in this modern search for the Golden Fleece, we must be able to follow her through the winding labyrinth. There are so many phases of this question that I shall attempt to touch on only one of them at this time, but it is one that lies at the root of many others. In reviewing my paper on " The Solution and Precipitation of Cyanide of Gold,"* Mr. E. B. Wilson contends† that" in the solution of gold by means of alkaline cyanides the various reactions are determined, as to their order and intensity, by the relative position of the elements concerned in the electro-chemical series, or series of voltaic tension." In a modified form this statement is probably true. That is to say, the difference of electrical potential in any closed electrical circuit determines the nature of the reactions which ensue. But the matter is not so simple as Mr. Wilson assumes. Recent investigations show that the order of the metals in the electro-chemical series depends not only on the nature of the elements themselves, but also on the chemical composition of the solution in which they are placed; its degree of concentration; its temperature; and, in the case of gases, on the pressure. Unless all these conditions are taken into account, inferences drawn from the electro-chemical series are likely to prove more

A study of the mechanical properties of the alloys of copper and silver led to the discovery that the solubility of silver in copper was greatly different from that generally supposed, therefore some work was done to determine the solubility with greater accuracy than had previously been achieved. After the work had been completed, two papers were published&apos; giving solubility figures which agreed closely with one another and with the work described herein. A detailed comparison of that work with the present will be given later. Preparation of Allots The copper used in making the alloys was electrolytic ingot of high purity. The silver was prepared by precipitation as chloride from nitric acid solution, followed by fusion of the washed precipitate with sodium carbonate and potassium nitrate. This method gives metal containing at least 99.99 per cent silver. The copper was first melted under charcoal in a small electric resistance furnace and the silver added as pure silver, it being unnecessary to make any intermediate alloys. After thorough stirring the metal was poured into a mold of suitable form. The alloys contained between 0.008 and 0.015 per cent of oxygen. Small amounts of oxide were visible under the microscope, but it is not believed this would have much effect on the results. Copper-silver alloys are notorious for segregation, consequently a few experiments were carried out to find a form of casting with as little segregation as possible. A mold 6 in. long and 1/2-in. dia. was first used, and an alloy nominally containing 5 per cent silver was cast in it, while some of the same alloy was poured directly into water to obtain the maximum rate of cooling possible. Analyses were made both on this sample and on turnings from the top and bottom of the 1/2 in. dia. cast-ing, the turnings being separated into three parts according to the position
