Our young, technically oriented people today are entranced by the space program, by physics that unlocks the secrets of nature, by electronics, and by other new technologies. The mining industry seems to be their last choice. Enrollment in mining schools is dropping and so is the interest of our great universities in mining curricula. The image of the mining industry appears to be one of being conservative, nonprogressive, resistant to change, and lacking in excitement and challenge. I submit that this public image is wrong. While the initial development of mines is usually slow and seemingly plodding, the problem of solving the imponderables of nature-the ore emplacement, its structure and physical characteristics, its response to recovery processes, and its probable ultimate profitability-is stimulating to the most acute and searching of minds and requires careful application of a combination of many technologies. The paths to obtaining the desired results must be within the bounds of reasonable expenditures in the early stage of development when risks are still high, and this financial discipline is a further stimulus to the imaginative search for the right answers.

DEVELOPED to grow single crystals of alloys of high hardness and high melting points is a simple but effective apparatus described in this note. Growth from the melt, that is, by the Bridgman technique, hay be applied to metals or alloys which are physically hard as long as no phase transformation occurs on cooling to room temperature. The present apparatus was employed to grow single crystals of the ferromagnetic AI-Fe alloys above 1 wt pct Al and the Si-Fe alloys above 3 wt pct Si. Single Crystal Growth In a simple form, the method for growth of single crystals from the melt requires a molten metal charge in a pointed crucible which is slowly low-ered through a heated zone into a colder zone. Solidification starts at the bottom point and continues up the charge as the crucible is lowered through the heated zone. If a single crystal nucleates at the bottom, one crystal may grow throughout the charge under ideal conditions of slow growth.4,5 The presently developed method of growth was designed so that the chances that more than one crystal would grow were small. Successful explosive gas well stimulation requires a thorough understanding of explosively driven cracks under confining in-situ stresses. In a previous paper (Simha, et a1 1983) the problem of explosively driven cracks was experimentally investigated to reveal the features of crack propagation. It was observed that the explosively driven crack propagation is the result of two different but overlapping phases. The first phase involving the initiation and early time crack propagation is entirely governed by the explosively generated stress transients. The rapidly decaying stress transients then lead to the second phase of crack propagation largely controlled by the in-situ stresses. The purpose of this paper is to more fully understand the characteristics of the first phase concerning the initiation and early time propagation of explosively driven cracks. Experiments are conducted with plastic models under biaxial compression and the dynamic event is observed with a high speed multiple spark gap camera of the Cranz-Schardin type. The experimental observations are utilized to propose analytical models of crack initiation under explosive loading to aid in the design of multiple fracturing necessary for successful application of modern well stimulation techniques.

Two distinct types of depth-dependent variations in texture have been observed in niobium cold-rolled various amounts up to 99.5 pct reduction in thickness. These nonuniformities are thought to be the results of nonhomogeneous plastic dewmation during rolling. The first type is characterized by a zone at intermediate depths that tends to lack certain strong orientations which are present in the surface and center layers of the rolled stock. This type of texture modification seemed to be associuted with "high" body rolling and may be related to the shape of the zone of deformation in rolling. The second type of texture inhomogeneity found involved the formation of a unique texture in the surface layers of heavily rolled strip. High fiiction forces between work piece and rolls appear to be needed to generate and maintain this texture. We believe that this unique surface texture results from a shear mode of deformation in the surface layers. THE evolution of texture in both the surface and center regions of cold-rolled niobium as a function of increasing deformation from 43 to 99.5 pct reduction in thickness was reported in a previous paper.' It was noted that for strips rolled between 95 and 98 pct reduction a distinctly different texture appeared in the surface layers which was unlike the center texture. Certain other layer to layer textural variations were also detected during the experimental phase of that work but were not described in the paper. Surface textures have been reported previously for the bcc materials iron and Steel2-4 and are well known in the fcc metals.5 It is usually stated that these are shear textures which arise under conditions of high friction between specimen and rolls. Work by Mayer-Rosa and Haessner5 n niobium rolled under conditions presumed to be high roll friction gave no indication, however, of a surface texture in that material. This is indeed puzzling in view of our results.' Thus we undertook additional experiments designed to study the stability of the surface texture for certain rolling variables. The variables investigated were the presence or absence of lubrication, amount of reduction per pass, and reverse vs unidirectional rolling. It is the purpose of the present paper to describe the kinds of depth-dependent textural inhomogeneities that we have observed in rolled niobium as well as to present the results of our recent experiments on the stability of the surface texture. Possible explanations for the depth-dependent texture variations will be discussed in terms of nonhomogeneous plastic deformation during rolling. EXPERIMENTAL Specimens cut from the niobium rolled to different reductions in the previous study1 were examined at various layer levels throughout the strip thickness for textural inhomogeneity. The specimen surfaces were either etched or machine ground and etched to remove material to a specific depth. Textures were determined by means of the Schulz X-ray reflection pole figure method with a Siemens texture goniometer and Cum X radiation. Since the important intensity peaks of the textures in niobium are usually located on the normal direction (N.D.) to rolling direction (R.D.) radius of the (110) pole figures, it was sufficient in many cases to scan only along this radius. At selected depths or where additional information was required the entire (110) pole figure was also obtained. In studying the stability and formation of the surface texture, experiments were conducted on 0.400-in.-thick, fine-grained, randomly oriented niobium specimens extracted from the same starting stock as that used in the earlier study.' Two of these specimens were rolled at room temperature to a total reduction of 96.4 pct. One was rolled between cleaned and degreased rolls with no lubrication. The other was lubricated between passes with Welch Duo Seal vacuum pump oil. The rolling schedules of each were kept as nearly identical as possible. Drafts were of the order of 0.006 to 0.012 in. per pass. Other experiments consisted of rolling specimens at constant fractional reduction per pass, i.e., (ta- tb)/ta equals a constant where ta and tb are the entrance and exit thickness of the rolled stock, rather than at a constant draft, i.e., ta- tb equals a constant. Ten specimens were rolled at room temperature on a two-high, motor-driven rolling mill with 8-in.-diam rolls. These specimens were rolled to thicknesses of between 0.041 and 0.073 in. (82 to 90 pct total reduction) at approximately constant reductions per pass ranging from 9 to 45 pct. Kerosene was used as a lubricant. Half of the specimens were always rolled in the same direction while the other half were reversed end to end at each pass. The texture in the surface regions was determined with the X-ray technique described above. RESULTS The textural inhomogeneities noted in niobium rolled from fine-grained, randomly oriented stock 1.5 in. long by 0.75 in. wide by 0.40 in. thick can be classified into two types. The first may be discussed with the aid of Figs. 1 to 3. A TREMENDOUS volume of the metal rolled annually into sheets, strips and coil stock finds its way to a host of stamping and manufacturing plants which are the quantity production units of the country. Considerable in volume, too, are the rolled and extruded rods which go into forging and manufacturing plants for conversion into the same general line: those widely sold metallic necessities and luxuries of the household, the office, transportation, farming and building construction. Yet, in spite of its age and its importance, the stamping trade has been doing its "engineering" largely by trial and error. Its distinctive method is shearing out and plastically working metal to finished shape in a few quick strokes with high loads and expensive tools which are warranted only by large quantities to be produced. The principal operations have many features in common with rolling and wire-drawing methods. Combinations of stresses are different, however, and details of operations are infinite in variety. An engineering study of the subject begins with stress analysis, but must go back to metallurgy for its foundation. A grouping of pressed-metal working operations according to whether the metal is (1) sheared, (2) bent, (3) drawn or (4) squeezed has proved useful. All of these groups include instances of both hot and cold operations. For discussions of metal working properties, the division between hot and cold working is taken as the recrystallization range of temperature. This, of course, brings tin, lead and often zinc into the hot-work range at or near room temperature. The outstanding hot-working press field is in forging: particularly of brass; all of which is included in the squeezing group.

The selection of a particular machine for production drilling is the most critical drill evaluation the pit engineer is called upon to make. It is a true engineering design problem requiring value judgments. Generally, the procedure follows these steps: (1) Determine and specify the conditions under which the machine will be used, including such service factors as labor, site, weather, etc. (2) State the objectives for the rock-breakage phases of the production cycle of operations--considering excavation and haulage restrictions, crushing capacity, production quota, and pit geometry-in terms of tonnage, fragmentation, throw, etc. (3) On the basis of blasting requirements, design the drill-hole pattern (hole size and depth, in- clination, burden, spacing, etc.) (4) Determine the drillability factors and select the drilling methods which appear feasible for the kind of rock anticipated. (5) Specify the operating variables for each system under study, considering drill, rod, bit and circulation fluid factors. (6) Estimate and compare performance parameters, including costs. Major cost items are bits, drill depreciation, labor, maintenance, power and fluids. (7) Select the drilling system that best satisfies all requirements with the lowest over-all cost.

IT seems to be in the nature of concepts that they have many meanings, and that the meaning best reflecting the primary interests of a person tends to be accepted by him as the normal meaning of the concept. The concept of ore reserves is no exception, for there is no unanimity of meaning among the several groups of us who are interested in ore reserves, nor even among the individuals of a single group. The groups most interested in ore reserves would seem to include at least the mining industry, perhaps State taxing agencies, and the Federal Government in all its diversified activities, and I would include also the citizenry at large or at least that part of it that consciously thinks about problems-of national welfare. To each of these, and to different individuals within them, the term reserves represents something different, and the farther away the individual or group gets from physical contact with the ore, the more abstract does his or its concept become. It is something different to the policy maker from what it is to the fact-finder or to the miner.

Quite properly it has been a tradition of engineering education that facts and not fancies must be adhered to. Without a doubt, those men who formed the mold of our engineering philosophy as much as it is possible for such molds to be established-rightly held the highest standards of intellectual honesty. Fortunately, it was unthinkable to them to temporize with untried theories and naturally the men whom they trained as engineering educators carry this philosophy in turn to their students, thus handing down the tradition of stability.

The world's largest steam-driven mine hoist, built by Nordberg Manufacturing Co. a half century ago, has become a major tourist attraction in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The hoist, designed by company founder Bruno V. Nordberg, is located in the Quincy Mine Number Two, just north of Hancock. Nordberg began construction of the mammoth machine before World War I, but delayed completion until after the war. The hoist became operational in 1920 and continued running until the mine was shut down in 1931.

THE pioneer mining company in Idaho to use airplanes extensively is the Yellow Pine project at Stibnite now owned by the Bradley interests. From 1901 to 1903 the gold boom at Thunder Mountain, in central Idaho overflowed to adjacent areas, prospectors discovering cinnabar and stibnite near the present site of Stibnite in Valley County. The workings were practically abandoned by 1911 through lack of capital and high costs of transportation on pack train roads over several mountain passes open only five months each year. During the World War there was some prospecting and production, and in 1921 twelve of the original companies were merged. Small-scale mining up to 1927 proved that an expenditure of several million dollars would be necessary to operate profitably. These properties were purchased by the Bradley interests during the period of 1927 to 1930. In 1927, there was no mining equipment except hand tools, no telephones, and only one building. Mettrllographic and X-ray diffraction study of Cb-Co alloys in the Composition range of 7 to 33 nt. pct Cb, after annealing at 1175 °', showed that near 25 al. pct Cb on MgNi,-lype hexagonal Laves Phaseexists in a narrow composition range, and that an MgCl- type cubic Laves Phase occurs between approximately 27 and 32.6 ut. pd Cb. Lattice parameter and density measures indicated that, in both phases. the deviations from proper Loves sloichimetry result from the substitution of cobalt atoms for some 0f the columbium atoms. Tlle same phases occurant 1000'C, together with an additional phase of unknown structure, which appears between the hexagonal Laves phase and the cobalt-bose terminal solid solutions KOSTER and Schmid' identified a phase corresponding to the composition VCo,, and more recently the crystal structure of this phase has been determined.' In the Ta-Co system Korchynsky and Fountain recently found two intermediate phases at the composition Taco,, one of them metastable. In contrast to the V-Co and the Ta-Co systems, in the Cb-Co system no intermediate phase has been found4 at the composition CbCo,. The present investigation was undertaken in order to reexamine the question of the existence of such a phase. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Twelve alloys were prepared by arc-melting in a water-cooled copper crucible under helium atmosphere. Electrolytic cobalt and 99.9 pct pure colum-bium powder have been used as starting materials. It was found that melting losses can be reduced by compressing the colunlbium powder in the form of thin pellets before melting. For the alloys used the melting losses were not higher than 1 pct. The intended compositions of all alloys and the chemical analyses of three of them are given in Table I. Specimens from all alloys were annealed in evac- uated fused silica tubes at 1175°C for 3 days and quenched in cold water. A second set of specimens of most alloys was annealed at 1000°C for 7 days and then quenched in cold water. The annealed and quenched specimens were examined metallographically, using the following etchant: 60 pct glycerine +20 pct H,NO, + 10 pct HF + 10 pct water. Powder specimens for X-ray diffraction were prepared by crushing annealed solid specimens in a mortar. Alloys containing 27.3, 28, 29.7, and 32.6 at. pct Cb annealed at either 1175" or 1000°C were very brittle and it was found unnecessary to reanneal the powders. However, alloys containing 24.8 at. pct Cb, or less, especially those annealed at 1000°C, were much less brittle and re-annealing was required to remove the strains present in the crushed powders. In each case reannealing was done at the same temperature at which the corresponding solid specimens were annealed and it, too, was followed by quenching in cold water. In many instances X-ray diffraction patterns were also taken of the polished and etched solid specimens and compared with the corresponding X-ray diffraction patterns obtained with powders. The X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with an asymmetrical focusing camera, using CrK radiation. For precision lattice parameter measurements some X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with a symmetrical focusing camera, again using CrK radiation. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A microscopic examination of the alloys annealed at 1175°C revealed that the alloy containing 25.5 at. pct Cb was composed of a single phase, but that the 24.8 at. pct Cb alloy did contain a small amount of a second phase, identified by means of X-ray diffraction as having a fcc structure, undoubtedly the terminal solid solution based on cobalt. Apart from the few very weak lines corresponding to this minor phase, the X-ray diffraction patterns of these alloys could be well interpreted in terms of a MgNi,-type hexagonal Laves phase structure. WITHIN the past decade, certain economic, legal, and technological changes have intensified the necessity for an efficient classifier or deslimer of particles at and below the 200-mesh point. First, mechanization of mining has increased the percentage of clays, silts, refuse, and high-ash material in the run-of-mine coal. Second, many washing plants must rely on smaller percentages of fresh make-up water because of shortages, economic factors, or legal restrictions on waste water disposal. Finally, the crushing of middlings and coarse refuse plus the trends toward the finer sizes in sales has further increased the amount of fines produced per ton of mine-run coal. A joint consequence of these circumstances has been the augmented percentage and build-up of —200-mesh material in the finer coal fractions and tipple circulating water. This results in the following disadvantages to the operator: (1) Higher ash percentages in the fine coal caused in large measure by the greater ash content of the —200-mesh material, (2) more difficult or expensive recovery of the fine coal from plant slurries, (3) lower filtration, drainage, and drying rates caused chiefly by lower permeability and the greater surface exposed per unit mass of the finer particles, (4) greater difficulty of beneficiatiing the fine coal because of lowered equipment efficiency and the partial "coating-out" of the —200-mesh fraction on the coarser coal particles. Obviously some cheap but effective fine-size classifier must be developed to aid in solving the above problems. To eliminate the generally unwanted —200-mesh fraction from coal slurries, several methods are in use. Probably the most popular with coal operators is the settling cone wherein the larger particles settle downward to the apex of an inverted cone while the slimes and fines are carried upward by vertical fluid currents caused by the overflow of the bulk of the water at the outer rim. The main advantage of the unit is the low initial and operating cost since no moving parts are involved. Disadvantages are primarily low capacity per square foot or floor space and the loss of good coal in the overflow above the 100-mesh size due to localized, high-velocity gradients and nonuniform, fluid-flow patterns, especially at high loadings. Also, when high slime concentrations are present, desliming efficiency is severely injured.', ' Other methods employed are the drag and spiral classifiers and the hydroseparator.' These involve mechanical separations achieved by moving parts and naturally result in higher initial costs. As they are all based on the settling velocity of the particles at the mesh of separation under operating conditions, area requirements are again large per gallon of throughput if they are to classify at the 200-mesh point. Usually the selection is made to operate at a higher throughput and thus sacrifice some coarser coal in the slime overflow. Mine financing, or providing adequate capital for developing and bringing a mining property into production, is an essential requirement for a successful operation. Today it presents a different picture than even twenty-five years ago. The day appears to be gone when a mining property could pay its own way from grass roots to production. The country has been quite thoroughly combed for surface showings from which sufficient initial profit could be immediately garnered to pay for further development and production facilities. The four M's for success in mining-mineral, market, management, and money-are still essential, but doubled or tripled wage costs and steep advances in cost of equipment and supplies throw increased emphasis on adequate capital funds for converting a prospect into a producer. Consequently, the old picturesque, although seldom rewarding, grub- staking procedure where a single venturesome citizen might advance funds to a prospector on a fifty-fifty basis for whatever discovery he might find, has largely disappeared. Its place, to some degree, has been taken by the small syndicate of venturesome members who band together for furnishing funds to a group of prospectors for the same general purposes. Such a syndicate has a definite organization and is usually assured of sufficient initial funds, or flow of funds, to carry on work for several years. It is usually headed by an engineer-promoter or an entrepreneur trader who has had considerable field experience as well as personal knowledge of his prospecting crews. For the owner of a potential mining property who has ample capital, the problem is to determine (1) justification for the necessary investment in exploration and development, and (2) the economics of the enterprise as to size and degree of integration of the ha1 operating entity. If the owner of such a property has little or no capital, he also faces these same basic problems but, in addition, must be able to present the findings of fact and persuade the prospective investor that the enterprise will produce

SINCE German operators opened the Tsumeb mine in the early 1900's, continuous operation has been interrupted only by enforced shutdowns during two world wars and the depression of the 1930's. Original metallurgical practice was blast furnace smelting. This was applicable only to low zinc ore, leaving large tonnages of high zinc ore to be stockpiled on the surface. A gravity concentrator using tables, buddles, and jigs operated for several years, but differential flotation of the ore did not get beyond the experimental stage. When the property was put up for sale by the South African Custodian of Enemy Property there was an estimated 434,000 tons of ore on surface dumps. The dump material, assaying 4.48 pct Cu, 15.8 pct Pb, and 10.9 pct Zn, had become highly oxidized during a stay of many years on the surface. But these dump ores had to be used in evaluating possible metallurgy because the shaft became flooded after the 1940 shutdown and underground ore was unavailable. Many companies examined Tsumeb but quickly lost enthusiasm because of the formidable metallurgical problems presented by the dump ore. However, on the basis of extensive test work, the present company decided that differential flotation would be successful and purchased the property after competitive bidding. Geology and Mineral Association is Complex The Tsumeb mine lies near the northern boundary of South West Africa at an altitude of 4200 ft. The village of Tsumeb is 335 air miles northeast of Wal-vis Bay, territorial port of entry. The orebody is a hydrothermal replacement deposit associated with an irregular intrusion of aplite cutting folded pre-Cambrian dolomite beds. In plan the deposit is a lens of 250x600 ft maximum dimensions. In section the orebody dips 55" south from the surface to 2000 ft, below which there is a reversal in dip to 75" north. Mineralization is localized in the aplite and in the adjoining brecciated dolomite. In the upper levels the ore is largely confined to a single lens, but below the 1890 level massive sulphide ore forms north and south lenses that partially enclose a pipelike body of medium to low grade disseminated ore, part of which is of too poor a grade to mine. Drilling below the 24th, or bottom level, has disclosed that a high percentage of the mineralization from the 3000 to 3300-ft horizons is comprised of copper and lead oxides. The deep oxidation may be local, since it appears due to circulating waters in a major fault cutting the orebody. Tsumeb ranks as one of the highest grade base metal deposits in the world. It is geologically and mineralogically famous for 41 copper, lead, zinc, vanadium, and germanium ore minerals, but its complex mineral assemblage is not attractive to metallurgists. In addition, there is a gradual change in oxidation intensity from the upper levels to the lowest level now operating, which is the 24th. This is well illustrated by the copper minerals. In the upper levels malachite and azurite are predominant, in the intermediate levels chalcocite, and in the lower levels tennantite. Throughout the mine there are sufficient heavy metal soluble salts to activate zinc, and large amounts of depressants are required even for so-called clean sulphide ores. When the same sulphide ore is exposed to prolonged oxidation aboveground, as was the case with the dump ores, reagent requirements become fantastic. Plant Construction First staff members arrived at Tsumeb in March 1947, and by May essential services had been restored and mine unwatering began. In 2 1/2 months company employees built a temporary jig and sorting plant for treating existing dumps to provide a saleable product during high metal prices. Generally speaking, drilling equipment and techniques presently in use are not capable of meeting the complex technical-and economic-requirements of deep core drilling. Drilling to great depths involves increasing risk, time, and money. And it is especially true that costs increase with depth when conventional core drilling methods are used. Introduction of wire-line drilling techniques has been a great boon to deep core drilling, and is rapidly gaining general acceptance. Henry Carlisle: This is November, 1960, and my good friend John Gustafson is sitting on the other side of a tape recorder. I, Henry Carlisle, am going to ask him some questions on the highlights of his life, and he has been good enough to say that he will play this question and answer game with me. Now, John, let's pick out a very interesting period when you went to North Labrador and made a preliminary investigation of the big iron deposits there. You were working for either Timmins or Hollinger, which was it? John K. Gustafson: I was in charge at that time of a Hollinger Exploration Co. office in Toronto. We had acquired options on enough shares to control Labrador Mining and Explorations Co., and through Hollinger North Shore Ltd., another company, we had a 3000 square mile concession in Ungava, Quebec, on the direct extension of the iron ore fields.
