Physical properties have been used for a long time in characterizing different kinds of coal, and such physical properties as friability and slacking have been included along with chemical properties in grouping coals according to the widely used system of classification adopted by the U. S. Geological Survey. Nevertheless, the usefulness of physical properties for classifying the different ranks or kinds of coal has been limited because it has not been possible to express these properties in definite form as numerical values. Because of the present wide interest in the formulation and adoption of a satisfactory system of coal classification, the Northwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington, has recently completed a study of the physical and chemical properties of approximately 100 different coals ranging in rank from lignite to anthracite. Purpose and Scope For this investigation samples were collected in approximately 45 mines and prospects in Washington and 23 mines in other states. The following studies, in addition to proximate and ultimate analyses, were made of the samples: Determination of (1) friability, (2) slacking or weathering characteristics, (3) yield of products by low-temperature carbonization in a laboratory retort, and (4) agglutinating value. Most of the coals examined were subjected to each of the tests enumerated, but with coal of some ranks this was unnecessary in some instances, and in others it was not feasible to do the work involved. A report which includes the analyses of the coals and the details of the methods of examination used in the investigation is being published by the Bureau of Mines.' AN attempt has been made to compare the influences of the two most widely used depressants-alkalis and sodium cyanide-and the most widely used activator-copper sulfate-on the air-mineral contact induced by five sulfur-bearing compounds: (1) sodium di-ethyl dithio-phosphate (sodium Aerofloat); (2) potassium ethyl xanthate; (3) sodium di-ethyl dithiocarbamate; (4) potassium iso-amyl xanthate; (5) potassium di-n-amyl dithiocarbamate. Three different organic types are included in this group and for two of these types a higher and a lower homologue have been tested. The study of potassium ethyl xanthate, the preliminary results of which have been described,1 was continued until there had been obtained a comprehensive account of the influence of variations in pH value and in the concentrations of xanthate, sodium cyanide and copper sulfate on the adsorption of this xanthate by galena, sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. With concentrations of copper sulfate and collector that the work with ethyl xanthate indicated would give the most illuminating results, the other four collectors were tested in a less exhaustive way. The same general principles determine the influence of alkalis, cyanide and copper sulfate, no matter to which type the collector belongs, but there is a gradation in the quantitative measure of such influence. In the list above, the five collectors are cited in the order of their capacity to withstand the depressants, sodium Aerofloat being the least resistant, potassium di-n-amyl dithiocarbamate the most resistant. This order coincides substantially with that of the solubilities of the heavy metal salts formed by double decomposition with the collectors, those formed from sodium Aerofloat being most soluble. There is little difference between the third and fourth members of the series, and under certain conditions their positions are reversed.

Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors. SURVEYING METHODS There are many kinds or types of surveying methods. Some examples include : land surveying for determining boundaries of land areas ; route surveying for locating roads, highways, right-of-ways, and haulways; city surveying for laying out lots, streets, and alleys; and mining surveying for projecting mine openings and locating mining operations. See Fig. 1. There are other types of surveying than those named, but in general, the type of method to be used will depend on the purpose for which the survey is to be made.

Metal chlorides were formed by reacting metal oxides and calcium chloride; the effect of additions to the reaction mixture was studied. It was found that by use of proper additions, metal chlorides could be prepared from mixtures that were not reactive under ordinary conditions. ManY recent metallurgical developments involve the use of chlorine or chlorides as primary reagents; good examples are found in the production of ductile zirconium and titanium by reduction of their chlorides with magnesium. Various methods of preparing metal chlorides are used and many others have been proposed. Some chlorides are formed by the direct combination of a metal or alloy with chlorine. Other processes react chlorine and metallic oxides; carbon or other reducing agents are usually employed to reduce the metal oxides and so promote chlorination. Metallic chlorides have also been produced by the exchange of chlorine between metal oxides and a chloride, such as sodium chloride. This type of reaction was the basis for the old process of chloride roasting in which metal ores were roasted in the presence of salt. Soluble chlorides thus formed

AT Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were .provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse lime-rock. While oversize material was crushed through ¼in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity. Prior to 1938 the relative proportions of zinc receipts were low and extraneous flux requirements at a minimum. However, subsequent war-inflated zinc demands brought marked increase in fine concentrate and slimy zinc leach residue receipts and an abrupt introduction to smelting a more refractory zinciferous charge. The higher temperature demands of the more refractory zinciferous charge required a higher smelting column and the higher column, in turn, rendered the blast furnace less receptive to improperly prepared feed. Inadequate presinter processing facilities prevented the production of acceptable sinter, and blast furnace production declined to 50 pct of former capacity. In view of a prevailing contention among lead metallurgists as to the deleterious action of high zinc slag on blast furnace capacity, it was natural to overstress this factor and to concentrate on possible changes in furnace design. Another interpretation was that primary correction should be sought through expanded sintering facilities. Apart from the hypothesis of a cosmic origin (which failed of acceptance because it was not adequately supported by facts), the only important controversy concerning the origin of petroleum has been, for a long time, between the advocates of inorganic and of organic origin respectively. Each of these theories has had a long history of development, and is still being perfected, under the influence of two causes: (1) the increasingly extensive and thorough study of the oil-fields (of which new examples are periodically discovered and opened); and (2) the progress of synthetic experiments devoted to this question. Moreover, the advance in our physical and chemical knowledge of the properties of this peculiar natural product has necessarily modified all criticism of conflicting views. I. The Hypothesis of Inorganic Origin That the nation of an inorganic origin of petroleum, first set forth by Berthelot in 1866, and afterward ingeniously developed and formulated by Mendelejeff, should thus have proceeded chiefly from chemists, is quite natural; for the question was one of possible chemical processes in the earth's interior, and of imagined chemical reactions to be verified by ex-periment. Hypotheses of this kind were suggested by many chemists, of whom two, P. Sabatier and J. H. Senderens, may be specially named by reason of their highly interesting chemical experiments. Among geologists, Mendelejeff's hypothesis was received at first with much interest and favor; for it rested on the assumption of a central terrestrial mass of iron carbide, and the geologists had good reasons for adopting that assumption. Yet comparatively few of them attempted to furnish geological proofs of the hypothesis: the majority either silently believed in it, or for one or another reason rejected it altogether. An apparently weighty support of Mendelejeff's view was furnished by the American, G. F. Becker, who found in the oil-regions of the United States important and abnormal disturbances of the isogons of terrestrial magnetism, and inferred that in these regions the central iron mass must

During the period from 1910 to 1920, there was a lively interest in the subject of grain growth and many papers were published, followed by interesting discussions. Questions dealing with the fundamentals of grain growth—why and how it occurs—were treated in papers by Howe,' .Jeffries,² Sauveur,² Chappell,4 Beilby,5 Mathewson and Phillips,6 Mc Adam,7 Carpenter and Elam,8 Stead and Carpenter,9 Ruder,l0 as well as others. Since that decade, much indeed has been done regarding the practical control of grain size, and it is now possible to order material having a size sperified in the American Society for Testing Materials classification. Also, one hears the term "spliced boundaries" used in connection with certain tungsten lamp filamentsl1 wherein it is important to prevent "sagging" between consecutive turns of the helix.12 This practical use of a certain knowledge as to the things that influence or even control grain growth should not be taken as an indication that the subject has been thoroughly explored and that nothing more can be learned from fundamental studies. It is with this thought in mind that a report of some observations and experiments on abnormal grain growth is believed justified. Abnormal grain growth is met with in heat-treating high-carbon steels in the austenitic range,'? in the hardening treatments of high-speed steels,14'15 and in the low-temperature annealing of strained low-carbon steels as in sheet and wire material. Entirely aside from these instances of exaggerated grain growth, which some might consider as freakish, it is thought that abnormal growth is simply a case where the growth forces and the forces tending to prevent growth are almost, but not quite, evenly balanced. Information relative to grain-growth characteristics in general may be obtained from a study of abnormal growth conditions, which may be looked upon as vantage points. Reflection will show at once that if growth forces are great in comparison to inertia or resistance to growth, many crystals start to grow and, for that reason, none becomes very large, whereas if inertia is

Although mechanical appliances for the ventilation of mines have been known siuce very early times (one being mentioned in Agricola's De Re Metnllica, 1657), it is only within the last forty years that such appliances have been generally used. A great number of different ventilators have been invented and used, but the varions forms of centrifugal machines having proved their efficiency, have now almost conlpletely replaced all others. Most if not all of the machines in use in this country are of this class, being either open-periphery fans, or closed, with chimney and spiral casing, of a more or less modified Guibal type. The theory of such machines has been demonstrated by Mr. Daniel Murgue in Theories and Practice of Centrifugal Ventilating Machines, translated by A. L. Steavenson. His statement may be condensed thus : Let a = orifice in a thin plate, of such area that its resistance to the passage of a given quantity of air equals the resist ance of the mine. The pottery of the New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) is equipped to make three classes of refractories; namely, spelter vessels, spelter condensers, and high-grade fire-brick. The most important of these are the spelter vessels, on account of the extreme severity of the service which they must perform, necessitating great care in the selection of materials and in the whole process of manufacture. Next to the spelter vessels in importance come the condensers, as large numbers are used in the manufacture of spelter, and improvements in quality result in material decreases in working cost. While the fire-brick which form the laboratory, or high-temperature portion of the spelter furnaces, are placed at the foot of the list, they are nevertheless of much importance, since high quality will decrease the frequency of the always expensive shutdowns for repairs. To promote simplicity, the manufacture of these three products will be described separately in this paper, except in so far as materials and the crushing and handling system common to all are conccrned. Materials Bond Clay.—The bond clay used entirely at the Palmerton pottery is a St. Louis clay furnished by the Grand View Fire Clay Co. It is stored in a system of covered bins, and no attempt is made to weather it in the accepted sense of the term " weathering." Some years ago our clay was weathered before pugging, but we did not find the benefit sufficient to offset the additional handling and the loss of clay incurred. Furthermore, we believe that the rotting of the pugged mix (described later) accomplishes the same results to better advantage. That there is some action taking place in the clay while stored in the covered bins, however, is evidenced by an increase in volume which at times has caused damage to the retaining walls of the bins. We have at present a stock of bond clay weathering in the open, and when this is put into service an opportunity will be afforded for making comparisons with the clay as usually handled.

The investigations described were made on a portion of Clear Creek basin near Golden, Colo. (-4 portion of the area under survey is shown in Fig. 1. The photograph was taken in the vicinity of station No. 2 of Line 11.) Three principal purposes were in the minds of the investigators: 1. To repeat with modern, more sensitive and more reliable instruments magnetometric placer investigations previously made. 2. To disprove the recently advanced theory that deposits of the glacial period have no pronounced magnetic effects. 3. To develop in detail the theory of the magnetic effects produced by placer deposits. Six years ago, the first magnetic observations were published, which proved that it is possible to locate gold-bearing channels with relatively crude instruments.' Two years ago, K. C. Laylander published results obtained with similar instruments.2 The measurements of the latter were discussed by the senior author of this paper.3 At that time, however, the material available for such a discussion was somewhat scarce and not made with the most modern magnetic instruments, although very brilliant results were obtained. Therefore, the senior author felt that magnetic investigations should be made on very clear geologic conditions with the most modern instruments. Comparison of Magnetometers The junior author undertook this work in the spring of 1928. The magnetic field balances, for vertical and horizontal intensities, designed by Schmidt were used (Figs. 2 and 3). The scale value of these instruments was approximately 257 and 157, respectively. In the preparation of zirconium and hafnium metals, there are many indications that impurity levels control the physical and chemical properties of the metal. The purpose of this work was to develop methods of producing pure raw materials that could be reduced to highly pure metals. Early work by the Carbomcndum Metals Co. and others indicated that certain fused salts were highly efficient in the removal of impurities from gaseous zirconium tetrachloride. We have developed workable fused salts along with a continuous and higly efficient scrubber design which can be used to produce very pure zirconium tetrachloride. Metal made from the purified tetrachloride has been shown to approach crystal bar metal in purity. Scrubber designs are discussed with recommended materials of construction. VARIOUS methods have been used to purify zirconium (and hafnium) tetrachloride. Most of these methods involve thermal degassing initially (the removal of more volatile compounds at temperatures below that where zirconium tetrachloride exhibits a significant vapor pressure) followed by a sublimation step (which conveniently leaves the nonvolatiles behind.) While these procedures effect definite purification, such processing is batchwise and does not result in optimum purification. Early work by The Carborundum Metals Co. and others indicated that fused salts were highly efficient in the removal of impurities from gaseous zirconium tetrachloride. The objective of this work was to develop a continuous fused-salt scrubbing process that would yield high-purity zirconium and hafnium tetrachlorides. The term "fused salt" refers to the molten state of ionic compounds and as used here, specifically refers to alkali metal and alkaline earth halides. Fused salts, because of their many valuable properties, are becoming increasingly im- portant industrially. These valuable properties of the fused salts are: 1) stability at elevated temperatures; 2)low vapor pressure; 3) low viscosity; 4) ability to dissolve many different materials; and 5) good elctctrical conductivity. All but the last property enhances the use of fused salts as scrubbing agents for zirconium and hafnium tetrachlorides. Fused-salt scrubbing may be defined for our purpose as the intimate contact between a gaseous compound and a molten salt with the purpose of removing impurities from the gaseous compound. In this case, the gaseous compound is zirconium tetrachloride which submlimes at 331°C. When this gas is contacted with a molten salt, impurities such as aluminum, iron, and titanium are removed and the resulting product is considered fused-salt scrubbed. Zirconium and hafnium are sold to a purity specification. Generally speaking, normal production without scrubbing is capable of meeting specifications. There are, however, several considerations That make the knowledge of methods of additional purification highly desirable. These are: 1) the control of product analysis; 2) the production of a pure product for special applications; 3) the salvaging of off-specification material; and 4) the use of raw materials with higher impurity levels than 1 he present raw materials. You will note that items 1 and 2 are somewhat complementary to each other and that item 4 assumes that The present process has impurity removal limitations. To better understand the part that fused-salt scrubbing of zirconium tetrachloride plays in the manufacture of zirconium, Fig. 1 contains an illustrated flow sheet of the industrial production of zirconium metal. Precise electromotive force measurements have been made on the zinc-cadmium system over the temperature range 700° to 900°C. Activity coefficients, partial free energies, enthalpies, and entropies have been determined .for the entire composition range. The integral heat of mixing is positive and compares favorably with calorimetrically determined values. Vapor-liquid equilibrium compositions were determined .for a total pressure of 1 atm and these agree well with previous values determined in other ways. The use of electromotive force measurements to obtain thermodynamic data for liquid metal systems is a simple and well-known method. Several reviews of the various experimental methods and results have been published.2,3,11 However, most of the past work using this technique was carried out at temperatures slightly above the melting point of the alloy system where alloy composition changes due to vapor transport and increased metal solubility in the electrolyte are not important factors. One advantage of extending the electromotive force measurements up to and including the normal boiling point of the alloy is that it is then possible to evaluate the vapor-liquid equilibrium of the alloy at various pressure levels up to 1 atm. A detailed discussion of the thermodynamics of reversible electromotive force cells can be found in most advanced physical chemistry or chemical thermodynamic textbooks. The expression stating the inter-relation of the electromotive force and the thermodynamic functions is the Gibbs-Helmholtz equation.

THE dislocation theory of plastic flow originated in 1928, when Prandtl1 suggested that the internal damping of metals of plastic origin might arise from the motion of a crystalline imperfection. Following this, Dehlinger2 employed a similar imperfection in a theory of recrystallization. The first detailed theoretical discussions were those of E. Orowan3 and G. I. Taylor4 in 1934. The resulting theory was gen- eralized by J. M. Burgers5 in 1939. Mott and Nabarro, in England, and Seitz and Read,6 in the United States, started an extensive examination of the atomic theory of dislocations in the period between 1939 and 1941. However, this development was arrested by the mar and was not taken up again until after 1945. Since 1946, the field has been the object of very intense activity, particularly in the United States and England. Dislocations are beautiful and intricate imperfections; they are sufficiently complicated to account for the great variety of phenomena encountered in the field of plastic flow. Above all, the dislocation concept enables us to understand how a metal or other plastic solid can deform inelastically under very small stresses at temperatures far below the melting point. FOR many years more money was spent in the search for and the production of gold than the gold that was produced was worth. The same thing is now true of petroleum. More money is spent for the search and. production of petroleum than the market value of the petroleum produced. The first thought concerning this statement will be that men would not embark in a business in which more money was expended than the value of the product produced. Few people realize that more money is spent in the oil business than the market value of the oil produced. This would not stop the spending if they knew it. Everybody knows that more money goes into a lottery than comes out of it, yet the instinct for gambling is so widespread and so easily excited that lotteries are forbidden by law. The hope of winning the grand prize is what lures men on. The search for and production of oil has become a more frenzied game than the search for gold ever was. THE OIL BUSINESS PAYS NOW BUT THE PUBLIC WILL PAY FOR ALL ETERNITY The public could sit back and enjoy all of this, knowing they were being supplied with petroleum products at less than their real cost, if it were not that our most valuable and least plentiful natural resource is being dissipated at an alarming rate, which is constantly increasing. Here is an industry that for many years has not been governed by natural laws. The so-called laws of individual and mass psychology play a more important role than natural physical and economic laws. Even the law of supply and demand works only in the most remote way in this industry. The oil production business as a whole is now paying the price for this folly; but the public will pay the price for all eternity. The seriousness of this matter, as an outstanding national problem, has been under consideration by many men for a long time, but nothing has been done to conserve our petroleum resources and prolong the supply, although very important steps have recently been taken to make this possible.

The occurrence of outcrops of bituminous schists and sandstones impregnated with heavy asphaltie petroleum first directed attention to the São Pedro area as a possible source of commercial production of petroleum. Since 1920, more than 20 wells have been drilled in this area. The discovery of oil shows and small quantities of natural gas in some of the early wells led to the continuation of drilling in the hope that more important findings would result. During the early part of 1934, detailed magnetometer observations were made in this area, and a considerable number of torsion balance stations were occupied. The results of these geophysical observations help considerably to clarify the structure of the area and the very considerable amount of geologic information available makes possible a much more exact interpretation of geophysical anomalies. In presenting the results of these observations, and interpretation of the geophysical data, certain actual case problems are included; i.e., geophysical anomalies due to anomalous masses of which the forms and positions are more or less known. Although anomalies due to igneous intrusions are probably more important to geophysicists in Brazil than in other countries, these data have a certain interest for all geophysicists, particularly because they were obtained in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the lines of magnetic force are directed upward, and in a region of moderately low inclination. This is considered as a geological-geophysical problem, and only passing mention will be given to the petroleum possibilities of the area. General Geology The location and general geology of the São Pedro area are shown in the sketch map of Fig. 1, which is adapted from the geologic map of South Brazil compiled by Oppenheim1,†- who gives the geologic column of South Brazil (So Pedro and vicinity) as follows:

It is the purpose of this paper to present data on brines occurring in the Frio formation of the Texas Gulf Coast, and to show how their composition varies, (1) with depth below the surface, (2) with depth below the top of the formation, and (3) along the approximate strike. The brines vary in chloride content from 3,180 to 73,000 p.p.m., though the average salinity of the salt waters is shown to vary with total depth; the concentration being 35,000 to 40,000 p.p.m. at 3500 to 5500 ft., slightly less than 50,000 p.p.m. chloride at 5500 to 6500 ft. and average 38,000 to 40,000 below 6500 feet. From the analyses available, it appears that the highest concentration of salts occurs in the upper 300 ft. of the formation, while lower salinity is found with increasing depth below this point. The salt waters from wells in Starr County show less concentration of dissolved salts than in any other group of wells farther north along the strike. In all, 116 analyses from 63 fields and 14 wildcats, from depths ranging from 1300 to 11,400 ft. below the surface and from z to 3240 ft. below the top of the Frio, are recorded. Introduction Brines have been studied for many Years in an attempt to solve some of the geologic and production problems associated with the production of oil and gas. One practical application of study of . water analyses is the correlation of waters occurring above, in, or below the producing sand in the same field or throughout the same formation. The Frio formation, the series of sands and shales occurring below the Marginulina zone and above the Vicksburg, is one of the major oil and gas-producing formations in the Texas Gulf Coast. Fossils are rare or absent in the upper Frio throughout most of the area. When available, cuttings and cores, and electric logs were used to determine the top of the Frio. A change in lithology was used to determine this point in most of the wells, and fossils were used in some of the deep wells. It is realized that a change in lithology is not perfect for correlation purposes over long distances and some of the trends may be influenced by the inability to differentiate between the nonfossiliferous Marginulina zone and the Frio. It underlies virtually all the area shown on the accompanying map (Fig. I). Although it is not productive in the updip facies, it has been explored to a limited degree below I2,000 ft. Further more, toward the coast line future drilling to deeper depths should encounter this formation. The goal of a detailed quantitative understanding of the variables insulfide flotation in terms of established, or new, scientific principles is still distant, although there has been a good beginning in the past 50 years with more rapid progress since 1930. Advances have paralleled closely those in other branches of surface chemistry and the development of a series of experimental techniques such as contact angle, surface area measurement, radioactive tracers, infrared spectra, electron diffraction, monolayer, and electro- chemical methods of investigation. The second editions of books by Sutherland and Warkl ( 1955) and Gaudin2 ( 19571, are detailed accounts of this progress. The complexity of sulfide mineral flotation systems is indicated by Sutherland and Warkl who list 32 variables of flotation, of which only 22 can usually be controlled by the metallurgist. A consequence of this multiplicity of variables, many of which may be specific to each particular ore, is that ways of floating sulfide minerals from new ores are still developed empirically. How- ever, this review will try to show how the chemistry of the function of frothers, collectors, depressants, and activators in sulfide flotation is being steadily unravelled. Chiefly, it will be concerned with the interaction of pure soluble compounds with individual sulfide minerals, the surfaces of which are often not stoichiometric for several reasons discussed by Plaksin.3 As a result, for example, a freshly cleaved galena surface has cathodic and anodic areas which have different degrees of oxidation and different reactivity to- wards collectors like xanthate. Such complicating considerations should be remembered in the subsequent discussion of pure minerals. THE NEED FOR FLOTATION REAGENTS After considerable controversy it has been established with a few exceptions that unoxidized, uncontaminated sulfides will not float. Moreover all flotation plants recovering sulfide minerals use collectors which are removed from the circuit with the sulfides. Gaudin, Miaw, and Spedden4 have discussed the relation between the crystal structure of solids and the native floatability of the exceptions mentioned above. A second question which has been much explored is the nature of the surface on which a collector like xanthate is adsorbed or reacts. Is this the un- changed surface of the sulfide mineral, or does the adsorption depend on the initial oxidation of the sulfide surface ? Sutherland and Warkl and Gaudin2 discuss the work of Taggart5 and others on this question without reaching any other conclusion than that oxygen was important.
