During recent years, Central Queensland has experienced a boom in its coal mining industry. This has involved many companies in projects requiring large capital expenditure. As with most projects of this size, many operating problems are now being experienced which were unforseen at the feasibility stage. One of these problems is the failure of pit slopes and spoil piles at some of the strip mining operations. There have been serious stability problems associated with Utah Development Company's strip mining operations in Central Queensland, in particular the Goonyella Mine. A field investigation programme was under- taken to determine the cause of highwall and spoilpile slope failures. Spoilpile failures were found to result from weakness near the spoil/floor contact zone. Highwall failures were found to result from a combination of unfavourable bedding plane dips and weakness, and the presence of joints in weak o~erburdep; Satisfactory solutions fa the staiity, problems are difficult to formulate, and-field stability experimentation is still at an early Stage.

This paper reviews factors involved in the feasibility stage of underground mine project development. Emphasis is placed on the need to first select the best method of extraction and make the most accurate assessment of the expected output even with the uncertainties which may exist in structural interpretation, ground stress, geotechnical factors, and industrial conditions. The subsequent engineering planning should be undertaken from the point of view of the face requirements and is subject to constraints imposed by the method of work and nature of the deposit and, in the case of access, to surface constraints and services.

Experimentation with new methods, materials and machines to improve primary drilling and blasting is a continuing practice in the hard rock quarry operations of the BMI Group. These experiments will continue in the remote hope that one day we may produce a perfect feed for the primary crusher. As this day is still a long way off, the necessity to break oversize boulders will be a problem to be faced for the foreseeable future. To gauge the efficiency of primary blasting from this point of view, BMI monitor the tonnes of material crushed in the primary crusher for each boulder requiring secondary breaking. Over a period of about 10 years, this figure has improved from 30 tonnes througi the primary crusher per boulder, to 100 tonnes per boulder at our largest operation, which produces in excess of 2 million tonnes per year. Evan with this improvement, 25,000 boulders require secondary breaking each year This paper does not provide the solution to this problem, as like primary blasting, it will have to be constantly reviewed as new products and techniques become available. Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discoveried in the Jiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: (1) porphyry related; (2) metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and (3) sediment-hosted deposit. The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, The chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

The crusher development programme for 7ft Super Extra Heavy Duty (SXHD) Symons cone crushers commenced in 1984. The main objective of the programme was to run the crushers at maxi- mum power for the full life of the liners. This would give a finer product sizing enabling grinding and flotation plant throughput to be maximised. The study was conducted along two basic lines of attack, the first main- taining an effective profile through the life of the liners, the second improv- ing the properties of the liners. It has been found that crusher liner life can be extended and crushing efficiency improved by modification of liner composition and profile.

Geomechanics is one of the more specialised aspects of site supervision on a major tunnell- ing project. The controlled deformation of a rock mass as a result of tunnelling and the knowledge of loading of temporary and permanent underground supports are important for safe, economic construction. These basic parameters depend on the construction method and sequence and the geological conditions through which a tunnel is driven. Thus geomechanical monitoring during the construction phase provides feedback to a design team and allows any revisions to a design to cater for local conditions not revealed by earlier investigations. Detailed geological mapping is an integral part of geomechanics in the construction phase. It serves as a monitor on pre construction predictions and also forms part of the as- constructed record. If conventional excavation-techniques are adopted, geomechanics can provide a service of blast' vibration monitoring of surface structures in urban areas.

In Australian collieries, solutions to the outburst problem must be implemented in a highly competitive environment which has a low tolerance on negative productivity effects. Solutions are only applicable if the overall viability of the operation remains sound. Minimum time must be spent on alleviation and control measures. This is favoured by simple geology, advanced warning and efficient alleviation and control procedures. Research requirements in support of this include 1. an improved means of predicting the nature and location of outburst zones ahead of the face and, 2. an improved means of measuring the effectiveness of gas drainage. For additional safety at the face, a means of continuously monitoring outburst proneness is required. In general, greater emphasis is required on improved instrumentation.

Estimation of in-situ resources and recoverable ore reserves for the Boddington Gold Mine feasibility study was done by applying an essentially "classical" ore reserve method. This relied completely on customized graphics-based computer software requiring close co-operation and interaction between geologists and mining engineers. All geological and mining outlines were interpreted and digitized manually. Classification of selectively mineable reserves into ore, marginal and waste categories was done using a method involving convolution, devised by Dr S Carras of the Systems Research Institute of Australia, and Mr R Hooper of Kinhill Stearns. The estimation process was complicated by the frequently conflicting requirements of the various joint venture partners. The resulting ore reserve figures therefore satisfied only the most general expectations of each partner.

The maintenance system for underground mobile equipment at Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. has been modified from that originally planned as a result of experience gained in operating the equipment.Downtime due to breakdowns has been reduced by improvement of vehicle servicing and overhaul procedures.Frequency of breakdowns can be reduced by training operating and maintenance personnel to a high standard, ensuring adequate numbers of tradesmen and supervisors, good maintenance facilities and communications, a well designed mine layout, and a comprehensive stock of spare parts.A maintenance and downtime summary is compiled for each four-week operating period and this is useful in highlighting particular problems where corrective action must be taken.

Mine design procedures will be revolu- tionised by technological developments in computers, software, database construction and management, and numerical modelling programs. Developments in geotechnical databases will be required which utilize geological and geomechanical tests to supply appropriate input for numerical models. Techniques utilizing sedimentological and structural modelling are described. The capacity of current numerical models in mine design is outlined and a program for developing a fully integrated mine design package proposed.

Acoustic Emission structural integrity evaluation tests rely on the validity of the detected acoustic emission data and the ability of the practitioner to both analyse and interpret the data to make a correct decision on the future use of the structure tested. Unfortunately with acoustic emission surveillance testing, it is not possible to know that all the available data has been assessed property. The equipment sensitivity, threshold settings, and event capture capacity, when combined with the decision making ability of the operator in real time, make it very difficult to achieve reliable integrity evaluation. The main problem is to interpret the data and so any monitoring system should involve expert systems in conjunction with both acoustic emission and other operational monitoring data to maximise the utilisation of the large amounts of information now available from operating plants, mines and structures.

The overall mineral assemblage of the Broken Hill orebody is similar to that of a skarn. However unlike the classical skarns it does not represent contact metamorphism of pre-existing limestone beds. It is a stratiform accumulation of exhalative-sedimentary silica, sulphides, (Ca, Fe, Mn) silicates and carbonates, fluoride and phosphate that has later undergone regional metamorphism. The resulting development of coarse-grained quartz, sphalerite, galena, rhodonite, bustamite, mixed carbonates, fluorite, apatite and many minor phases has produced a sulphide-rich skarn- like mass that like many others of its kind, might best be referred to as a stratiform skarn. Recent investigations of occurrences of this type are showing that the incidence of concentrations of particular metamorphic minerals in and adjacent to such orebodies are closely related to bedding and to former sedimentary facies patterns. From this it appears that the mineral assemblages may be used to deduce not only the nature of the materials laid down in the beds, but also the physico-chemical conditions under which sedimentation took place. Several stratiform deposits, including Broken Hill, are used as examples to show that variations in these conditions may have a profound influence on the subsequent response of the rock to regional metamorphism and hence on the mineral assemblages that finally develop.

The Latrobe Valley brown coal deposits are one of Australia's major energy resources with measured and indicated reserves amounting to some 162 billion tonnes. Economically recoverable reserves are estimated at some 65 billion tonnes, 47 billion tonnes of which are classified as available for mining (VBCC (1983)). These deposits contain one of the lowest grade fuels used anywhere in the world. Typical Net Wet Specific Energy values range from 6 to 9 MJ/kg. Despite the low energy value of the raw coal, the Latrobe Valley deposits represent approximately 90% of Victoria's indigenous non-renewable energy resources. Utilisation of this vast primary energy resource has been a key factor in the economic development of Victoria.

The Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, in Papua New Guinea, is a large disseminated gold deposit hosted by hydrothermal breccias. The deposit occurs in the cupola zone of a 350,000 year old monzonite stock which is emplaced in the collapsed caldera of a shosho- nitic stratovolcano.

The design and construction of a 2.5 million tonne per annum ship unloading system at the PWCS export coal terminal in Newcastle, NSW, has further increased the flexibility and sophistication of Australia's largest coal export facility. The system comprises a new unloading wharf serviced by a self unloading vessel, conveyor stream and multi compartment ground level storage shed. Coal is reclaimed from this shed by the largest portal scraper ever installed under cover. The system also provides additional flexibility by receiving coal from the existing PWCS road receival to improve scheduling. The PWCS can now simultaneously handle 11 coal types and receive from rail, road and sea at almost 15000 tonnes per hour.

The Tugun Bypass Tunnel in Gold Coast, Australia was constructed using diaphragm walls with the top-down cut-and-cover method to allow simultaneous construction of an airport runway extension above the tunnel, whilst excavation of the tunnel continued underneath. The tunnel was built in an environment of high groundwater table and deep deposits of alluvial and estuarine soils with the toes of the walls founded in soil deposits. There was a potential risk for differential settlements to occur between the diaphragm wall panels, caused by the runway fill placed over the tunnel roof during excavation. Dewatering within the diaphragm walls was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnel. The tunnel was also built in an area where environmental considerations were of great importance. Three-dimensional numerical modelling was undertaken to predict the differential settlements of the tunnel with considerations of varying subsurface profile, staged excavation and dewatering, non- uniform surface loading and complex soil-structure interaction. Field instrumentation and monitoring was implemented to confirm numerical predictions.

The impulsive loading tests under confining pressure were performed to investigate the dynamic fracture properties of rocks in a triaxial stress state. The apparatus in this study consists of the Split Hopkinson pressure bar, a pressure vessel and hydraulic actuator. Magnetite-quartzite and limestone were selected for the test. The stress-strain curves and fracture strength under confining pressure obtaind in the tests were compared with those of the conventional triaxial tests. The results presented here show quite definitely that in the system investigated the intensity of dispersion is enhanced by switching the flow entry from bottom to sides of the packed trough. Since there is no reason to suppose that this would not be true generally then it is not surprising that the blast furnace dispersion data of Standish and Polthier lie above the data for packed columns with bottom fluid entry. In fact, on the basis of the present results, blast furnace dispersion results can never equal standard packed column behaviour but must always be above these. The result that the intensity of dispersion in the trough model is higher closer to the side ports than away from them is at variance with that of Standish and Polthier blast furnace results. Aside from the obvious structural differences between these two systems, it is thought that the presence of raceways and the tortuous path of the gas flow in the furnace may provide an answer. Clearly this is an important difference in the behaviour of the two systems and further investigations designed to clarify the position would have significant practical value. This would also give an indication of how the furnace D/ud values may be decreased along the whole height - assuming of course that this result gives the best overall performance of the furnace. However, there is to date no knowledge whatsoever about this aspect of blast furnace Technology.

The patented "Epytensic" pump of Minnovation Ltd, a multiple piston pump, is used widely on shearer loaders and by partial high pressure watcr jet cutting strategically in relation to cutter picks not only improves cutting rates, but saves power and increases the life of gearboxes and picks, as well as improving dust suppression. The "Face Side Pump", also a piston pump, located on the ranging arm gearhead has advantages over gateroad pumps and shearer body pumps. The "Extraction Drum", hydraulic air mover system, linked with the above innovations and high pressure water, have further advantages in methane and dust removal. Some modifications providing these systems need workshop applications but most are possible underground with minimal changes to shearer profiles and advantages of minimising hosing, along with the other advantages stated.

In presenting size analysis data, one has the choice of various graphical techniques; each no doubt has been developed to highlight a particular aspect of the data. A frequency size distribution plot is used quite extensively to illustrate the importance of the finer size particles in iron ore granulation. However, the basis for such a plot is often not appreciated. As a result, cases of incorrect use can be cited. The aim of this paper is to extend the work of Alien (1981) and to provide, using examples and figures, a basic understanding of the implications of the various size distributions. A simplified method of presenting sizing data on a linear scale graph paper is presented and recommended. This involves a simple construction of a histogram of mass fraction versus particle size (in geometric progression).
