"THIS IS THE THIRD of the consecutive Annual Forums on Grinding that were instituted by Mr. L. E. Djingheuzian in 1957. The first was on the subject of Ball Milling (Transactions, Volume LX, 1957) and the second on The N on-Cataracting Ball Mill (Trans-actions, Volume LXI, 1958). From the discussions at these forums it was evident that one of the most important factors affecting the efficiency of grinding is the shape of the liners. In order to make a study of liners in use, it was •decided to seek the co-operation of operators across the country by sending out questionnaires requesting basic information. Additionally, these operators were urged to set down briefly any pertinent information on the subject acquired through experience and experiments at their own particular plants. A compilation and analysis of these data were to form a basis for discussion at the Forum on Liners at the Annual Meeting in Montreal, April, 1959. The response of the milling fraternity to this solicitation was most gratifying, and clearly indicated the importance attached by the operators to the effect of liner design upon overall grinding performance."

THE subject of taxes appears to engage our attention altogether too lightly. At least it would seem that, notwithstanding the increase in the cost of government, and its concomitant increased taxation, little constructive work is being done with a view to solving the problem of increased taxes. I believe that the inattention of the public generally to the subject of increased taxation is due largely to the fact that shareholders are not advised of the amount of taxes paid by industry. Were companies to advise their shareholders the amount of monies paid or payable out of each year's earnings for taxes in one form or another, and were such amounts compared with the amounts available for distribution to shareholders, the effect would be a general demand for more equitable taxation methods. While I am not unmindful of the burdens and inequities in taxation confronting industry generally, I believe that the mining industry in this Province does not fully appreciate the burden represented by the costs of taxation. My reason for this belief is based partly upon1the fact that no serious effort has so far been made to devise some means By which the mining industry in British Columbia might protect itself against the ever-increasing burden of taxation. In addition to this fact the widely diverse nature of mining in British Columbia makes the accumulation of comparable data a problem which, so far as I can ascertain, has never been attempted in a manner which would be authoritative. It should not be necessary to cite the effects of this burden upon any one mining company or upon any branch of the mining industry, such as coal mining, placer mining, base-metal mining, or the precious-metal mines. In my opinion, the operation of our mines by large corporations is conducive to the payment of taxes with much less protest than would be the case were the taxes being taken out of the earnings of just a few partners or a very few shareholders. We appear to be too unmindful of the taxes, paid by mining companies, of a kind that are not so prominently brought to our attention as are the taxes which are calculated upon the taxable income of the company at the end of its fiscal year. British Columbian mining companies pay many other taxes besides those which are calculated upon taxable income. Among these are school taxes, property taxes, gasoline taxes, mineral taxes, coal royalty, to say nothing of fuel-oil tax, sales tax, and excise taxes.

"High narrow backfills of significant strike length approach the stress conditions associated with a free standing wall but this lower bound design approach is not considered efficient for earth structures. This paper considers the design of high narrow backfills using upper bound limit analysis, retaining wall theory with backfill arching and centrifuge model tests. Complex toe support situations pertaining to operational factors at Falconbridge's Lockerby Mine are investigated. It is shown that the susceptibility of high narrow fills to toppling is much lower than anticipated from the retaining wall analysis and that toppling can be avoided by a suitable toe support. It is also concluded that adhesion between the fill and an adjacent pillar can markedly increase the stability of the fill. INTRODUCTIONFalconbridge's Lockerby Mine pillar projects will expose cemented tailings backfills to heights (H) up to 55 m. The exposed backfills may have strike lengths (L) greater than the heights but are relatively narrow, having widths (w) of up to 12 m. The bulk cement content of the fills varies from 8.3% (12.1 T:C) to 3.0% (33.1 T:C). Exposed faces may have up to a metre of overhang due to stope overblasting, as shown in Figure 1. These fills have a solids specific gravity of close to 3.0 and were placed at a pulp density of about 68%. The tailings have a fairly uniform grain size with 32% less than 0.075 mm (200 sieve) and about 12% slimes (less than 0.02 mm sizes). The fill exposed by early pillar removal will be backed by adjacent, near vertical, ore pillars. Future pillar removal may expose similar fills which are not supported by an adjacent ore pillar but which will be backed by either an open void or by uncemented backfill. Furthermore, these fills may be undercut when the pillar slot is driven, further reducing stability (case 3, Fig. I) or a wedge could be left to help support the fill (case 2, Fig . 1). This paper presents limit equilibrium analyses for these various backfill conditions in a 22: 1 T:C fill and com- pares the results to data from centrifuge model studies at a scale factor of A= 157 as indicated in Figure I. Prototype fills have a 6 m deep cone plug of 16:1 T:C which is accounted for in the comparison of centrifuge model test with analytical results."

It is apparent that the importance of energy as a management concern has increased considerably since 1973. The importance placed on energy management today will undoubtedly be an important factor in determining company and industry sector strength and profitability tomorrow.

"9.1. IntroductionThe application of the electron microprobe for in-situ analysis of platinum-group minerals (PGM), first reported by Borovskii et at. (1959) and Genkin (1959), has resulted in a large and growing number of analyses of unidentified PGM. Figure 9.1 charts the increase in the number of reported unnamed PGM from 3 in 1959 to a total of 140 by 1979. All these minerals, with the exception of UN1968-5 and UN1976-1, were analyzed with the electron microprobe.There has been no recognised or consistent manner for reporting these unidentified PGM. The term ""unnamed"" has been used for PGM that are considered to be new species without a name as well as for PGM which have not been exhaustively compared to named and unnamed PGM in order to determine whether they are unique. Many of the so-called unnamed PGM are only unnamed because of poor microprobe analyses or because larger than usual elemental substitutions (e.g. Bi for As) made it difficult to calculate the true stoichiometry. Some of these unnamed minerals have been unnecessarily reported with non-stoichiometric formulae, as discussed by Cabri (1980). Better analytical data should reduce the number of such proposals.Another unfortunate practice, possibly used to by-pass the scrutiny of the Commission for New Minerals and Mineral Names, I.M.A., is to report a ""new"" mineral by referring to it by a name made up of its constituent elements. This has been deplored on a number of occasions (cf. discussion in Fleischer et at., 1976, p. 179), but some journals continue to publish such material. The Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names has not recognised such ""names"" and these PGM are therefore included in this chapter with other unnamed minerals.A further example of inconsistency in reporting unnamed minerals is the report of a specific ideal stoichiometry with no further details (not even an analysis!); sometimes with a note that this will be reported in greater detail in due course. I have also been guilty of similar optimistic statements and, unfortunately, it is not always possible to follow through. Some authors give data on unnamed minerals in such a discrete manner that their reports are sometimes missed in literature searches."

"Abstract - The Eel River area in the southwestern Miramichi terrane of New Brunswick contains a complete calc-alkaline suite of volcanic rocks that are interlayered with intervals of sedimentary and polylithic fragmental rocks, and are overlain by a thick sedimentary sequence. This package, collectively referred to as the Meductic Group, was deposited in a submerged volcanic arc setting interpreted to be part of the Popelogan arc. Rifting of this arc led to the development of the Tetagouche-Exploits back-arc basin, and formation of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits in bimodal volcanic rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp in the northeastern Miramichi Terrane. Unlike the Bathurst Mining Camp, volcanic rocks in the southeastern Miramichi Highlands form a continuous calc-alkaline suite characterized by increasing Zr/TiO2 with increasing SiO2, in part resulting from progressive coupled assimilation and fractional crystallization of nested magma systems. Slumping of semi-consolidated volcanic and sedimentary rocks in topographically unstable areas resulted in numerous slumps and debris flows that are preserved throughout the Eel River area. In the early 1990s, the discovery of a large sulfide clast in a road cut along the Benton road sparked interest in the volcanogenic massive sulfide potential of the Eel River area. Subsequent drilling intersected smaller fragments, one clast of which graded 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag, and 220 ppb Au. The intersection of thin lenses of stratiform sulfides in another drillhole indicates favorable conditions for the preservation of massive sulfides. Their subsequent incorporation into synvolcanic debris flows resulted in the transport and deposition of sulfide clasts from hydrothermal vents to more distal locations. Similar to the Buchans deposits of Newfoundland, tracing these debris flows back to their source would be beneficial from an exploration perspective. Approximately 15 km to the southwest of the Eel River area, gold-bearing base metal sulfide clasts (11.1% Zn, 6.13% Pb, 0.19% Cu, 108 ppm Ag, and 1100 ppb Au) occur within intermediate-composition volcanic rocks at Monument Brook in eastern Maine. Sommaire - Le secteur d’Eel River dans le sud-ouest de la terrane de Miramichi au Nouveau Brunswick contient une séquence complète de roches volcaniques calco-alcalines interstratifiées avec des roches sédimentaires et fragmentaires polylithologiques, sous une épaisse couverture sédimentaire. Au début des années 1990, la découverte d’un large claste de sulfures le long de la route Benton provoqué un intérêt pour le potentiel en gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes dans les secteur d’Eel River. Des forages ont par la suite recoupé des fragments plus petits, dont un claste qui a retourné des teneurs de 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag et 220 ppb Au. Friction stir processing (FSP) is used to produce wrought microstructures at the surface of sand-cast aerospace grade magnesium alloy ZE41A-T5. It is found that the microstructure is significantly refined in the stir zone and the flow arm. The stir zone is largely comprised of equiaxed magnesium grains of approximately 4.5 pm compared with about 50 µm in the base cast material. In the stir zone, however, abnormal growth of some grains is also observed. Vickers microindentation hardness tests indicated that the stir zone experiences some increases in hardness. Single surface passes with low distortion, lack of pores and cracks were successfully obtained indicating the great potential of the FSP technique for modifying, improving and repairing magnesium alloy castings. This will probably open new opportunities to apply magnesium alloys in aerospace industry.

"A locked cycle flotation test was done on a sample from the ovoid portion of the Voisey 's Bay copper-nickel sulphide ore. The chemical conditions for this test were generated by prior independent testing. In this test work the time in each of the five separation stages was optimized prior to executing the locked cycle test. A numerical simulation of the continuous circuit material balance was done prior to the locked cycle test. The test results were not fully satisfactory because the flotation of pyrrhotite in the bulk rougher and cleaner stages was not consistent. The preliminary indication was that the samples had oxidized to varying degrees during storage.INTRODUCTIONINCO has performed batch laboratory flotation testing on ore from Voisey's Bay which is a mixture of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Earlier, Lakefield Research was contracted by Diamond Field Resources to test the ""flotability"" of the ore, which included a pilot plant trial. INCO's J. Roy Gordon Research Laboratory has repeated many of the batch tests that Lakefield did to verify their results. Based on their own work, INCO has modified the circuit proposed by Lakefield Research. The modified circuit is based on batch test work, but no locked cycle test (LCT) was done. It is believed that this circuit will produce a copper concentrate at 29-30% copper and a primary nickel concentrate at 15-20% with recoveries of 80% or above.For several years the University of Toronto has been working with INCO to provide ""hands on"" experience for undergraduate students as an Industrial Research Project (IRP). This year, the objective for IRP was to optimize the time for each of the five separation stages for the Voisey's Bay ore then to numerically and experimentally simulate the material balance for a continuous circuit."

"Résumé - Les seules productions de columbo-tantalite en Côte d'Ivoire sont effectuées dans les éluvions, colluvions et alluvions d'Issia, au Centre-Ouest de la Côte d'Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n'a été accordée à l'étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l'évolution de ces granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent: le granite orienté à deux micas (type Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (type Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (type Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type-S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite de type Issia fut le dernier à se former.Les pegmatites liées au granite de type Issia ont été classées en quatre types : A- pegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et D- pegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV- zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartztourmaline. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d'altération métasomatique externe.La minéralisation de Ta, Nb, et Be est liée à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, la minéralisation de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n'importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite de type Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite de type Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite de type Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma. Les éléments rares sont restés dans le liquide résiduel jusqu'à ce que les conditions favorables à leur précipitation soient atteintes.L'établissement de ce lien génétique ouvre des voies pour des nouvelles stratégies d'exploration."

The reduction of aqueous slurries of uranyl carbonate at elevated temperature with compressed hydrogen m the presence of metal catalysts and certain organic promoters has been shown. to yield uranium dioxide. The reduction takes place in a sequence of steps. The purity and sintering properties of the dioxide make it of interest as a starting material for fuel element production. Simple control can be exercised over the surface area and oxygen/uranium ratio of the product during reduction. URANIUM dioxide for fueling atomic power reactors 1s conventionally produced as a powder by simultaneously decomposing and reducing ammonium diuranate with hydrogen in a furnace at high temperature. There appears to a definite trend toward the hoisting of greater tonnages from greater depths. There is every indication that this trend will continue and we feel that improvements in the design, fabrication and installation of mine guides will be of significant importance in the future. The present state of the art in mine-shaft guide systems is reviewed and the parameters required for improvement are derived in this paper. Finally, a proposal is made for a new steel guide system which meets the parameters and is economical to fabricate and install.

The Quebec Cartier Mining Company produces iron concentrate for twelve months of the year from Port Cartier. This J>Ort is designed to handle ship varying in size from 3,000 to 100,000 d.w.t., requiring 50 feet of water at low tide. The harbour was built on shore for reasons of economy and layout, after considering many more conventional offshore designs. It provides for heavy oil bunkering, tanker off-loading, a heavy lift derrick and freight handling, besides ship loading and mooring. The weather for the previous fifty years was studied to enable wind and wave conditions to be accurately assessed for design purposes, and to determine probable lost time due to adverse weather conditions through-out the year. The first ship to be loaded was 60,000 d.w.t.; the second, 20,000 d.w.t. The latter entered the harbour after dark, under its own power, following a tug through the partly dredged narrow entrance. Large ships use tug assistance. Ships may leave the loading berth with the other berths occupied.

"A 2003 paper discussed the idea that as gold mining companies grow larger it becomes more difficult for them to discover or acquire new gold deposits large enough to replace extracted reserves on an annual basis. Deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are statistically few. An update in 2005 reviewed VLGPs with respect to production, reserves, and reserve life and observed recent changes in the gold mining industry. Now, more than 12 years later, this paper explores how those VLGPs have fared and how the gold mining industry has changed. "The development and commercial operation of the Falconbridge chlorine leach process have been described in papers in 1985 and 1987. Since this time, various process improvements have been implemented and the capacity of the Kristiansand refinery has been increased to 85 000 t/y Ni, 40 0000 t/y Cu and 4500 t/y Co. The focus has been on continuous improvements in productivity, the use of energy and other costs. Several environmental issues have also been eliminated or reduced since 1987. IntroductionThe first nickel refining operation in Kristiansand, Norway, started in 1910 based upon raw materials from Norwegian mines. In 1929, Falconbridge Nickel mines purchased the refinery to acquire information and the patent rights to the Hybinette refining process that was practised at the small Kristiansand refinery. Falconbridge ownership has now, for more than 70 years, provided a strong base regarding raw material supply, financial resources and technical support for further expansions and major technical improvements at the refinery.The main concepts of the new chlorine leach process were developed in the laboratories from 1966 to 1969 and the process was piloted from 1970 to 1972. The main stages in the commercial plant were started in the 1975 to 1981 period. After 1981, there have been a number of process modifications, plant expansions and improvements to operating practices. The developments up to 1988 have been described in previous publications (Stensholt et al., 1986, 1988).This paper presents an overview of the process and how it is practised at Falconbridge Nikkelverk AS (FNA) today and describes some of the main changes that have been implemented since 1988. During this time, the nickel capacity has been expanded from 54 000 t/y to 85 000 t/y and the cobalt capacity from 2000 t/y to 4500 t/y. The paper describes how these expansions were achieved together with continuous improvements in operating efficiency and also gives an overview of the main environmental concerns at the refinery."

"The number of underground mines replacing diesel by battery powered mobile equipment is growing worldwide. The latter produces locally zero emissions and less heat, improving air quality in the working areas, and can potentially reduce energy costs due to lower ventilation requirements and in the face of higher fuel prices. However, there is a lack of systematic approaches to evaluate the potential economic benefit of switching from diesel mobile technologies to electric ones. This paper presents a method to answer the question of whether a mine with known operating conditions should invest in battery-powered electric equipment to reduce its total costs. Furthermore, this method provides the optimal number of electric and diesel equipment in relationship with their impact on the ventilation system and the total costs of running the mine from the energy perspective. A case study of an underground mine in Northern Ontario (Canada) is presented to validate the method proposed. The scenarios studied include the specific climatic conditions of the region, and the possibility to use heat recovery for the ventilation system. Overall, results show that the use of electric mobile plants is cost competitive, especially so when electricity cost can be lowered through load-shedding strategies.INTRODUCTIONOf the multiple advantages of using electrical vehicles (EV) underground in mining, the potential increase in air quality and comfort is the most significant (Paraszczak, Svedlund, Fytas, and Laflamme, 2014). Until recently, fully battery-powered electrical underground heavy duty machinery (i.e., loaders or trucks) were not available, so that tethered and trolley assisted vehicles were the only electric alternatives to diesel powered vehicles (Bétournay et al., 2011). Today, several commercial battery-based alternatives are available (General Electric Fairchild, 2015; RDH Mining Equipment, 2015; Paraszczak et al., 2014). Operational details can be found in Ewing (2015). The main battery technology used (Lithium Iron Phosphate, LiFePO4, or LFP) was already anticipated in Bétournay et al. (2011) as a good candidate for these types of vehicles. More details on these batteries, along with state of the art and future perspectives can be found in Zubi, Dufo-López, Carvalho, and Pasaoglu, (2018)."

To pollute means to make impure or unclean. We tend to forget that man defecates, urinates, sweats, expectorates and exhales and in himself is a beastly little pollutor-but then so is Mother Nature! The object of this paper is to try to put what man and nature do into perspective. The facts indicate that although man may sweat a little, Ms. Nature is by for the greatest pollutor of all.

"9.1. INTRODUCTIONIn Chapter 5 of Volume I royalties are dealt with and several topics would appear to be duplicated in this Volume. However, Volume I may be looked upon as a general guide, whereas this Volume is a reference volume. It deals in considerable detail with specific provisions and concepts relating to royalties between private parties. This does not, however, mean that Chapter 5 can be ignored. It should be looked upon as a source of general information concerning royalties between private parties and as a negotiating aid intended to give an overview of various topics. You may well find that in its general approach it will lead you to ask a question which, hopefully, will be dealt with in this Volume .It should be remembered that royalty agreements are agreements with a particular focus, and so the concepts set forth in Chapter 1 apply to them. This chapter addresses a few considerations specific to royalties that will usually form part of an agreement rather than a stand-alone agreement.9.2. FORMAT FOR ROYALTY PROVISIONSIn many of the cases where royalties arise, they are adjunct to, or part of, other arrangements. For example, a royalty may form part or all of the consideration to be given to an owner upon purchase of his property, or it may arise if a joint venturer ceases to contribute to the venture and has his interest converted to a royalty.1 It is with such situations that this section primarily deals; if the royalty is contained in an agreement that is singularly, or primarily, concerned with creating it, then it is just a normal agreement.Commonly, by the time the right to receive the royalty arises, at least some of the other provisions of the agreement have been performed and/or become redundant. For example, in an option agreement the royalty will be a continuing obligation of the optionee, usually arising only after the option has been exercised.2 In a joint venture agreement, a royalty will often arise where the interest of a non-participating venturer has been diluted and converted to a royalty, in which case the recipient will usually become a passive party, entitled only to his royalty, and most of the rights that he enjoyed as an active venturer will cease to be effective."

"Most of the secondary ZnO contains fluorine (F) in large quantities. Serious troubles at the zinc electrowinning are occurred by the cathode corrosion caused by F, therefore we developed iron compounds as F-adsorbents used in zinc sulfate solution. The iron compounds can be reused repeatedly as F-adsorbents because they can adsorb/desorb F alternatively depending on the pH. Moreover, if the adsorptive capacity decreases, we can dissolve and re-synthesize them easily. In this paper, results of the experimental process which consists of five steps (leaching, F removal, Cl removal, purification and electrowinning) to produce high purity electrolytic zinc from the secondary ZnO are reported. INTRODUCTIONThe recycle material for zinc, secondary ZnO, contains large amounts of fluorine (F) and chlorine (Cl) which are halogen elements, compared with calcine obtained by roasting of zinc sulfide concentrate. The halogen elements cause adverse effects in the zinc electrowinning process and particularly F causes corrosion of aluminum cathode plates and eventually sticking of electrodeposited zinc and therefore, F concentration in the electrolyte is controlled to less than approximately 20 mg/L. There are several methods to remove F from secondary ZnO, such as leaching with Na2CO3 or NaOH solution [1-2], vaporizing in a rotary kiln by roasting at 1000 to 1200 degrees C [3-4]. However, up to the moment, there has been no effective method for the removal of F from zinc electrolyte and it has been a big obstacle in treatment of secondary ZnO in electrowining of zinc.The authors, therefore, developed an iron compound used as an adsorbent of F in the zinc sulfate solution [5-8]. This iron compound is Akaganeite that has a crystalline structure of ß-FeOOH. Akaganeite is synthesized by neutralization of FeCl3 solution containing a small amount of SO4 2- with Na2CO3. When this iron compound is immersed into weak acidified zinc sulfate solution, F in the solution is adsorbed. F adsorbed in the iron compound is removed by immersing in weak alkaline solution and the iron compound can be reused as F adsorbent."

"Abstract-The Voisey’s Bay Ni-Cu-Co deposit was discovered in late 1994 as the result of prospecting initiated in the summer of 1993. By July 1995, proven mineable reserves were 31.7 x 106 tonnes grading 2.83% Ni, 1.68% Cu and 0.12% Co, and current total resources in all categories are quoted to be in the order of 150 X 106 tonnes. The deposit is associated with a body of troctolite belonging to the Nain Anorthosite (1.35 Ga - 1.29 Ga) suite, which was emplaced across the boundary between the Proterozoic "Rae" Province to the west and Archean "Nain" Province to the east.The deposit can be described in terms of three geological settings. The "Ovoid" is a 600 m long by 350 m wide by 100 m deep lens of massive sulfide, covered by 10 m to 20 m of glacial overburden, and separated from the underlying country rock quartz-plagioclase-biotite gneiss by a breccia of gneissic fragments in troctolite known as the Basal Breccia Sequence. To the west of the Ovoid lies the "Western Extension", comprising disseminated and massive sulfides in a north-dipping sheet of troctolite which ranges from upper unmineralized troctolite down through troctolite with increasing amounts of sulfide (up to 50%), to massive sulfide (in some places only), and then to Basal Breccia Sequence. East of the Ovoid, the troctolite sheet broadens out into a troctolite intrusion, within which occurs the "Eastern Deeps", a zone of massive and disseminated sulfide up to 100 m thick that is currently being explored. The mineralization of the Eastern Deeps lies along the line of intersection of a feeder sheet with the base of the intrusion. The current interpretation is that the three geological environments represent different erosional levels through a single mineralized intrusion. In this model, the deepest erosional level lies to the west and exposes the feeder to surface, whereas the Ovoid represents the base of the intrusion at surface, and the Eastern Deeps the base of the intrusion overlain by 600 m to 900 m of troctolite. Sulfides and gneissic fragments were brought up by magma flowing quickly through the feeder, and settled out where the flow rate decreased as the sulfide-bearing magma mixed with magma already emplaced in the intrusive body."

Pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores can be conducted on ores with high carbonate content using just water or water with alkaline reagents to promote fast kinetics, and suppress the formation of elemental sulphur and CO2. In this work, a fundamental study was conducted to explore the silica-pyrite interaction in the presence of calcium and sodium carbonate. It was found that an alkaline environment increases the pyrite decomposition kinetics on one hand, but on the other dissolves silica, which encapsulates the dissolving pyrite thus hindering ultimately its complete decomposition.
