"A mineralogical and trace element analysis was performed on the Küre historical slags in order to evaluate the possible recovery of copper and cobalt. Reflected light microscopy, electron microprobe and image analysis were combined to determine the Cu and Co distribution in the slag.The results indicate that 81% of the total cobalt is chemically combined in the fayalite whereas only 3.4% is in the mechanically entrapped sulphides. The remainder being in hercynite and wiistite. On the other hand, 95% of the total copper is in the sulphide phase.This kind of applied mineralogical investigation gives invaluable information when it is performed preliminary to metallurgical experiments.IntroductionThe recycling of metallurgical slags is a growing business. The operation is directed toward recovering base metals (Cu, Pb, Zn), and by-products (Floyd and Mackey, 1981).Two reasons are invoked to explain metallic losses in slags: (1) mechanical entrapment of matte globules in the silicate melt; and (2) chemically combined metals in the slag-forming phases. Obviously, a chemical analysis of the slag cannot distinguish between those two modes. Grinding and flotation of the liberated sulphides have often been used to evaluate the importance of mechanical entrapment (Mechev, 1970; Imris , 1982).Recent studies in applied mineralogy of pyrometallurgical products (Bérubé et al., 1987; Pignolet et al., 1986) have demonstrated the benefits of quantitative mineralogical analyses of slags. Optical microscopy together with electron microprobe and image analysis offers a powerful and easy way of quantifying the relative importance of mechanical and chemical losses."

"The 1980sfor the mining industry can be characterized as the survival of the fittest. High interest rates, low commodity prices, foreign subsidized competition and decreasing ore grades have contributed to a streamlining of the domestic mining industry in the United States, leading to the shutdown of operations or large cutback of work forces. The purpose of this paper is to look at the impact of a layoff on the employees of what was once a major uranium producer in south central Wyoming, twenty months after the final layoff and mine shutdown. INTRODUCTIONDecember 19, 1985, was the date of the final of three successive layoffs over a two-month period, leading to the complete shutdown of Petrotomics Company, a subsidiary of Getty Minerals Company. The final shutdown was due to a combination of depressed U3O8 prices and the takeover of Getty Oil Company by Texaco in January 1984.The layoffs affected 104 employees and included mine personnel, mill personnel and staff. Both hourly and salary workers were involved. The operation was considered non-union, however, a few mill hourly employees were unionized. At the completion of the layoffs. only a handful of employees remained for administrative and miscellaneous functions.For Getty employees, the terms of the merger agreement provided a generous level of separation benefits. The terms that were insisted upon by Mr. Petersen, Chairman of the Board for Getty Oil, stipulated that employees receive one month of severance pay, for each full calendar year of employment up to a maximum of two year's pay. This was the forerunner of what is now commonly known as the ""tin parachute”. All but the union employees of Petrotomics received these separation benefits. Union employees were covered by their separate, less generous, contract.Much of the literature that has been published in recent months has centred around the effects of layoffs on remaining employees, or the psychological effects on the severed employee. This study will emphasize the economic impact and ramifications due to a layoff, using the Petrotomics employees as a case example."

"The estimation of recoverable ore reserves for feasibility in precious metal deposits such as Pine Creek must account not only f or the extreme variability of the ore grade but also for the complexity of the geology. Compatible models f or both must be adopted. Further, very selective mining demands reserve estimates be based on small selection units whose individual grades cannot be estimated reliably from the exploration drilling data.Multigaussian kriging is one method based on a multivariate normal model for estimating recoverable reserves under such conditions. In this paper, a non-mathematical description of the multigaussian model is presented together with its application to the Pine Creek Gold Deposit. The results, when compared to the first year of production, are encouraging for the model but not without surprises.Together, Part 1 and Part 2 of this study combine a detailed and geologically conditioned variogram analysis with an appropriate estimation method for a highly variable low-grade gold deposit. This and other studies of gold deposits familiar to the author show convincingly both that while the appropriate geostatistical skills and techniques are necessary to tackle the question of reserves, equally important but often discounted is the need for an appropriate and compatible geological model. IntroductionThe Pine Creek gold mineralization is associated with saddle reefs, and quartz and quartz- sulphide veining within the Enterprise Anti cline. The anticlinal structure is complex and, prior to mining, the mineralization was considered to be mainly strata controlled. Grades vary up to 160 grams in l .5rn core samples with coefficients of variation in excess of three.The estimation of the recoverable reserves for such a depo sit must account for both the geological complexity and the extreme variability of the gold grade.Part 1 of this work presented the geological model for the deposit and summary statistics 0 f the gold data. A detailed structural and variogram analysis considered both gold grades and the normal score (or gaussian transform) of these gold grades for different composite sizes."

"IntroductionInco Limited operates nine underground mines on the rim of the Sudbury Basin. These operation s are situated near the city of Sudbury, 589 km west of Montreal, and 363 km north of Toronto. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, and the principal minerals are pentlandite, chalcopyrite , and pyrrhotite. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 51 000 tons per day.The total volume of fresh air supplied to the nine mines is six million cu.ft/min. There are 50 main fans in operation at these mines, powered by electric motors totaling 11 200 kW (15 000 hp).The trend in metal mining during recent years towards mechanization and high-tonnage production methods has greatly increased ventilation requirements. The now of air must quickly dilute and carry away diesel exhaust fumes, dust created by mining operations, and the fumes of the explosives used in blasting. Mechanical ventilation is required to obtain the necessary volume and control, as natural ventilation pressures alone are, for the most part, inadequate and unreliable. In the event of a mine fire or other needs, close control of ventilation is essential.There are two unique heating systems presently in operation at Inco: Creighton Natural Heat Exchanger and Stobie Ice Stopes."

"In recent years, computer based ""expert systems"" have been taking on large complex tasks for which no exact algorithmic solutions are feasible; tasks previously reserved for human experts requiring empirical knowledge, judgment, experience, developing a ""best solution "" by the use of plausible reasoning. Mining method selection is an appropriate area for the application of an expert system because extensive and detailed knowledge is required to make a ""best"" interpretaion of frequently ambiguous geological information. The expert system model presented here would enable users to apply expert knowledge to the evaluation of methods for coal deposits mineable by underground methods. IntroductionIn an increasingly complex and specialized world, human expertise spanning scientific, economic, social and political issues plays an increasingly important role in all branches of engineering. This is especially true of mining engineering. The number of scientific and professional disciplines involved in mine planning and evaluation, illustrates the problem. A conservative list includes geology, geophysics, geotechnics, hydrology, mining, environment, and economics.Engineers are almost obliged to be experts in at least one of the above disciplines if they are to handle the volume of information required in the planning process. Although computers have become indispensable tools in many endeavours, there is continued reliance on the human expert's ability to identify and synthesize these diverse factors, to form judgments, evaluate alternatives , and make decisions . This is especially true with regard to problems that are not easily amenable to precise formulations.The precious resource of human expert is also fragile and transient. The departure of a crucial expert from an organization ma y cause serious dislocations. Senior experienced people impart their knowledge of younger colleagues, but the demand for their talent may not leave sufficient time for such educational efforts. "Gravity profiles were established over five known Middle Silurian pinnacle reef s in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario. The profiles were approximately 3 km long, with stations every 60 m. Four fairly recent technological developments were used which now make the gravity method relatively efficient and inexpensive compared to the techniques available two decades ago. These are: (1) a La Coste-Romberg model G gravimeter to measure the gravitational attraction with a sensitivity of 0.01 mgal; (2) a Sokkisha model B-2 semiautomatic engineers level to measure the station elevations with an accuracy of 0.5 cm; (3) a Huntec FS-3 hammer reflection seismograph to determine the overburden thickness to an accuracy of ± 7%; and (4) a modern microcomputer to process the data sets and mathematically filter the gravity values. Thus, two men can measure and analyze approximately 1 km of profile per day and obtain the residual gravity profile to an accuracy of ± 0. 05 mgal. Positive gravity anomalies of 0.17 to 0.72 mgal were observed along all five profiles that approximately delineate the dimensions of the known pinnacle reefs, which have an average height of 120 m, diameter of 1500 m and depth to top of 575 m. The relative ease of the gravity survey method makes it a cost-effective technique for hydrocarbon exploration in southwestern Ontario. IntroductionPinnacle reefs are important sources of oil and gas. Although the pinnacle reefs in southwestern Ontario are small, they may contain commercial pools of oil and gas because of their proximity to refineries. They are also useful for subsurface storage of gas to meet the winter surge in gas demand.At present, geophysical exploration for new pinnacle reefs is done primarily by relatively expensive seismic methods, which are also limited in southwestern Ontario by prohibitions on blasting. Gravity methods of exploration were attempted more than two decades ago in this region. (Pohly, 1954); however, the level of technology at that time made the method marginal in sensitivity and quite expensive. Several subsequent developments- gravimeters with greater sensitivity and operating ease, ""self-levelling"" levels for elevation control, hammer seismic reflection units for determining overburden thickness and portable microcomputers for efficient data analysis-have significantly improved the precision and cost effectiveness of the gravity method. Five known pinnacle reefs were selected in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario (Fig. 1), to test the effectiveness of integrating these developments to locate and define additional reefs. Isolated reefs were chosen to avoid the problem of the gravity effect s of one reef interfering with those of a neighbouring reef. The surveys were facilitated by choosing reefs with a concession road passing directly over them ."

"IntroductionSince the disappearance of Les Forges du Saint-Maurice at the end of the last century, many historians have taken an interest in the lengthy past of this enterprise. They considered the political, socio-economic, administrative and anecdotal aspects of the industry, but barely dealt with the elements of technology. The purpose of this article is to try to fill this gapru.Les Forges du Saint-Maurice was an integrated industrial concern, specializing in the production of semi-finished wrought iron and finished cast iron, that operated almost without interruption between 1734 and 1883. Les Forges first came into being in 1729, when Montreal merchant Francois Poulin de Francheville submitted to the king of France a request for the right to exploit the bog iron ore deposits on his seigneury of Saint-Maurice. This request, agreed to in 1730, was one of a long series of attempts, previously unsuccessful, to establish a local iron industry in the colony. Several such proposals were held up by a lack of capital from promoters or a too rigid application of the mercantilist policy by the metropolis. In 1730, however, the French minister Maurepas favoured a more liberal policy which would encourage private enterprise. The benefits of an iron industry to the naval construction industry was a factor that caught the attention of administrators. The choice of the site for Les Forges was based on the following factors:• the abundance of surface deposits of bog iron ore in the Saint-Maurice region;• the presence of a vast supply of hardwood and conifers needed in large quantities by this industry;• the proximity of sandstone and limestone deposits, indispensable materials for the construction and operation of the blast furnace;• the presence of a water stream, with sufficient flow to provide the hydraulic power needed for the operation of the machinery."

"Responding to requests by the Canadian mining industry and the mine regulatory authorities, the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) undertook a major research project on evaluation of wire rope testing in 1986. The objectives were to document, analyze, and clarify - in basic operational terms the reasons for ongoing mine shaft wire rope failures that occur despite mandatory non-destructive testing (NDT) with electromagnetic (EM) instruments on a routine basis.The project's investigative scope and depth was unprecedented. It could not have been successfully completed without the wholehearted cooperation of industry, research organizations, and mine-inspectorates at both national and international levels.The project's goals were attained. II was shown that, at present, the problem areas in Canada are oj a human , rather than of a hardware-related nature. Consequently, the principal recommendations are concerned with a more widespread, more uniform and thorough operator training and certification process at industrial and regulatory levels. Secondary suggestions concern areas of hardware-related improvements.In this paper an up-to-date general overview is given of the major project results. A n extensive reference list is also provided of papers that contain all relevant documentation in detail."

Traditional planning methods such as CPM and PERT have been useful tools to manage construction projects. However, the underlying model of these traditional methods often seems to fail to represent real projects as they tend to assume no interrelationship between project components. In reality, project components have complex dynamic feedback process that requires modeling of inherent uncertainty in the execution of these projects. Nevertheless, this dynamic nature and uncertainty have not been explicitly addressed by traditional planning methods. Project failure can be attributed to poor representation of the inner and outer aspects of operations that are responsible for project dynamics. Uncontrollable external forces are often cited but the real cause may be internal such as the feedback process among components of the project. An alternative perspective is offered in this paper through system dynamics (SD) that accounts for the feedback process and discrete event simulation (DES) for modeling the uncertainty. The proposed method utilizes SD method for modeling project dynamics and DES method coupled with CPM network for operational details and uncertainty, respectively. A case study that involves preparing engineering drawings in a design office is used to demonstrate the use of the developed method and to highlight its capabilities. Modeling the dynamic dimension is expected to enhance planning and scheduling of construction operations and to provide a better understanding of the impact of various internal and external factors on project schedule and productivity performance.

Productivity and efficiency of diesel-powered underground trucks and LHDs can be enhanced through the application of a range of advanced technologies. In addition, these machines are subject to ever more stringent emissions control requirements. This paper will review how various technologies can improve usability, maintainability, and performance of LHDs, through a number of examples. The use of instrumentation and monitoring to understand the role of operator practice on mucking efficiency, as well as the use of finite-element analysis to evaluate structural design, and the use of control techniques to modify operator inputs and hence decrease power consumption, will be presented.

In the planning stage of a tunnel, due to limited technology in the geological survey and the financial restriction, tunnel supports are often designed from unsatisfactory information, and the tunnel construction is started. Therefore, "Information-oriented construction" is carried out in the construction stage, in which the design is rationally verified and modified by observations/measurements. Moreover, the ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face must be predicted for efficient and safe tunnel construction. The authors have examined effective prediction methods to the ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face under construction of mountain tunnels (Aoki et al., 2010) in view of the established method (Schubert et al., 1995). Though the prediction method of Schubert requires the displacement in the direction of tunnel axis, it is difficult to obtain its accurate data by the electronic distance meter. Then, we have proposed a method that uses tilt sensors installed at the tunnel crown near the face to obtain the slight tilting information. To measure inclination of the tunnel crown, this inclinometer was originally developed as a daily control measurement, such that the geological condition and its possible change behind the face could be detected early, and a steady advance and construction safety could be ensured. This paper describes the method of forward prediction mechanism and advantages of this suggested method. It then presents the typical results of a field verification test at a tunnel under construction and an example of evaluation of the ground conditions ahead of the face based on the 3D numerical analysis in three types of condition changes of ground deformation moduli.

"The results of a series of model stope pours designed to investigate working pressures on bulkheads during hydraulic pouring of classified tailings backfill are reported. Total bulkhead pressures and fill water pressures were monitored under the condition of a fully saturated backfill. Similitude of the model testing is discussed and equations are developed to estimate bulkhead pressures under prototype conditions. The model results show that good base drainage, combined with a bulkhead setback, can reduce the expected bulkhead pressures to values such that timber or concrete block structures should be capable of supporting a saturated backfill. Introduction Bulkheads are used in underground running operations to block drift openings in order that hydraulically placed sand backfill can be contained in stope pours. Whenever possible, the sand fill is designed to have sufficient percolation rate so that excess hydraulic transport water will gravity drain out through the bulk headed drifts. This avoids costly decanting systems. Early bulkhead design assumed that the bulkhead pressure could be as high as 0h = Hy where H is the fill height and ""y is the saturated unit weight of the fill (Thomas et al., 1979)(1). A typical design pressure for a 50 m fill height would be 1250 kPa giving a design force of 12,500 kN on a bulkhead located in a drift of 10m2 in area . Typical bulkheads were 1 m thick heavily reinforced concrete structures formed and poured into a notched drift. Not only were these expensive structures but the associated problems of inside drainage systems and curing time delays increased production costs. As experience with bulkheads for large bulk pours increased and fill pressure measurements became available [see, for examples, Libby et al., 1975(2), Askey et al., 1978(3)] , 'free drainage' timber and concrete block bulkheads were designed. Substantial savings have been realized using these types of bulkheads but greater engineering design and monitoring of backfill pours is necessary to ensure that backfill pressures do not exceed the bulkhead design pressures.The effective and total stress components of fill pressure, the engineering concepts associated with the 'free drainage' design and some detailed design considerations have been discussed by Smith and Mitchell (1982)(4) . It is important to the safe use of these designs, however, that the basic engineering concepts be demonstrated and communicated to those responsible for the day-to-day backfill operations. This paper describes and explains observations from a series of model studies designed to measure bulkhead pressures in a saturated fill."

"This paper will discuss the application of tools and the evolution of computer-assisted procedures in the production planning process at Quintett e Coal Limited (QCL). In 1986, QCL produced 5.3 Mt of clean coal from their surface mining operation located in north eastern British Columbia. The structural complexity of the sedimentary deposit and high rate of mining necessitate the consideration of large amounts of geological information which continually updates the interpretation. There are multiple unit operations required during the process of mining through a given multi-seam sequence, which results in many interdependent faces, and multiple iterations of scheduling sequences in order to satisfy a given set of objectives. In order to facilitate these activities in a timely fashion, it was recognized that a computer systems' capability needed to be developed which could increase the efficiency of information input, manipulation and output. IntroductionQuintette Coal Limited (QCL) has been operating a large metallurgical open pit coal mine in northeastern British Columbia, since 1982. The mine produced 5.3 Mt of clean coal in 1986 for export to Japan. Throughout the start-up period and the subsequent build -up of production levels, it became evident that the primary producing area was comprised of extremely complex faulted structures. This has resulted in development and modification of specialized mining methods employed to effectively recover the resource. Similarly, the planning and engineering techniques employed have been evolved over the same period of time. The implementation of computerized methods has been one of the major developments in this process, including geology interpretation, modelling, reserve definition, quantification, production planning and scheduling, and graphical plan presentation. These capabilities have been employed, in various forms, for project scale feasibility work and long range planning for some time, however, the use of computer tools for short-term, detailed production planning of a complex mining environment presents a different set of problems. It is hoped that a presentation of the current state of evolution and future plan s for development will be of interest to organizations considering implementation of a similar system."

"As part of a study to evaluate factors affecting tankroom air quality, the mechanism of aerosol generation from bursting bubbles in electrowinning operations has been investigated. Typically 2 to 3 mg/m2.s are produced in zinc tankrooms. Analysis shows that the rate of production of film drops (geometric mean diameter - 2 urn] increases with decreasing bubble size, and that jet droplets (geometric mean diameter - 20 um) are not produced with gas bubble larger than - 4 mm. Both mechanisms of drop formation and current efficiency are affected by surface active agents, with an over-all reduction in emission of up to 60% to 70% being achievable. A source control system which does not adversely affect electrolyte properties is always preferred, and coalescence of all gas bubbles in to a continuous stream of gas at a single point on the electrolyte surface would eliminate aerosol emissions. This objective was the basis for design of a coalescence device which, in laboratory tests, reduced the emission rate by over 95%.The control device fit s over the electrodes in the electrowinning cell and is partially immersed in the electrolyte. A number of changes in the design which resulted in significant improvement in the performance of the device are reported.Field tests have shown that only about 75% of the aerosol below 10 um can be eliminated by coalescence. The remainder (up to 95% of the total) is controlled by coalescence of droplets, by impaction on the exposed collector surface and gravitational settling.The device does not interfere with operation of the tankroom, handles the effect of surges in power during harvesting, and is simple and inexpensive to maintain. IntroductionDuring the electrowinning of metals (such as zinc and copper) gases are evolved along the electrode surface forming small bubbles. The bubbles travel upwards and burst on the electrolyte free surface generating, in this way, small droplets. Because the electrolyte is often highly acidic or contains toxic materials, the whole process can result in the formation of an aerosol in the atmosphere above the electrowinning cells which poses a serious health hazard to workers in the area, and corrodes equipment."

"A program of mapping, sampling and testing to determine the potential of the aggregate resources throughout Newfoundland and Labrador was commenced in 1978. A 6-km-wide corridor parallel to all transportation routes was selected as the study area.The study consisted of a preliminary surficial interpretation followed by field mapping and sampling. Granular resources were sampled at a 500-m interval and non-granular materials were sampled at a 1.5- to 2-km interval. Data were gathered on landforms and stratigraphy as well as a field description of the sample and deposit types. Particle-size and lithologic analyses of the samples were also conducted.The locations of samples and deposits were mapped on 1:50,000 topographic base maps and summarized for publication at a 1:250,000 scale. Surficial geology maps were produced at a 1:50,000 scale. A computer program is being developed for the search and retrieval of field data.The first phase of the Inventory of Aggregate Resources program is nearing completion and to date has collected information on approximately 9,500 samples throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This data will be used to provide f or the effective management of these vital non-renewable aggregate resources.The mineral aggregate industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is very competitive, but undercapitalized when compared to other provinces. The demand for aggregates is forecasted to increase to in excess of23 million tons per annum by the year 2002.In terms of over-all mineral production, the extraction of sand, gravel and stone has a significant impact when compared to other minerals in terms of value and tonnage produced.IntroductionThe province of Newfoundland has approximately 18,000 km of coastline. A large proportion of the population lives in coastal communities where, traditionally, beaches have been a major source of construction materials. Beaches have, therefore, often been subjected to overutilization, resulting in erosion of back beach areas or adjacent headlands."

"Hat Creek coal was treated by the liquid solvent extraction process in a continuous plant at the U.K. National Coal Board Coal Research Establishment.Extraction levels of over 80 per cent dry-mineral-matter-free (dmmf) coal were achieved.Total light oil yield was around 47 per cent of the dmmf coal. The light oil was shown to be a good feedstock for secondary refining into gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.In spite of the high mineral matter content of the coal the solid residue was successfully removed from the coal extract by filtration.IntroductionBritish Columbia Hydro (BCH) and the National Coal Board of Great Britain (NCB) undertook a joint project to test the Hat Creek coal from British Columbia in the NCB's coal liquefaction process designed to produce transport fuels and feedstocks for the chemical industry by the liquid solvent extraction of coal(1), In this process most of the coal is dissolved in an aromatic solvent and the residual solids consisting of mineral matter and undissolved coal are removed by filtration. The resultant coal extract solution is fed to a hydrocracker for conversion to light liquid products and a fraction suitable for recycling as solvent. The light liquid products can be converted to gasoline and diesel fuel in a secondary refining stage.The dissolution of the coal is effected by heat-treating a slurry at a temperature in the region of 400°C which causes some bonds in the coal to rupture with the formation of radicals(2,3). These radicals are stabilized by hydrogen transfer from the hydroaromatic groups in the solvent, resulting in a reduction in the molecular weight of the coal. In the absence of donor groups the radicals combine to form an insoluble high molecular weight product(4). From studies of the kinetics of these reactions it has been shown that the formation and stabilization of the radicals is rapid at temperatures around 400°C(2,3). The dissolution of the depolymerizing coal is, however, relatively slow and the need to ensure complete dissolution in order to achieve a high extraction restricts the selection of digestion time(5). Further, it is important that digests do not contain depolymerizing coal as it may re-form under the applied stress in the filter cake inhibiting flow through the bed and resulting in low filtration rates(6).Thus, in practice relatively long digestion times are generally required in order to ensure complete dissolution of the depolymerizing coal, while it is also important to avoid depletion of the hydrogen donor groups in the solvent which would lower the rate of hydrogen donation to the coal and thus reduce the extraction yield and adversely affect the filtration(7). Clearly it is desirable to optimize the digestion time and temperature with regard to the extraction yield and filtration properties.The precise control of the distribution of products from the hydro-cracker is important for the composition of the recycle process solvent. The principal functions of the solvent are to provide a source of donatable hydrogen and a vehicle for the dissolution of the depolymerizing coal. Hydrogen transfer from the solvent, achieved by the conversion of hydroaromatic to aromatic groups, stabilizes the radicals formed by thermal cleavage of some of the bonds in the coal resulting in a progressive reduction in the size of the coal molecules(8,9) and dissolution in the solvent. The combination of radicals would result in the formation of insoluble material and a reduced extraction yield of the coal(4). Thus to achieve a high extraction yield the solvent should contain sufficient hydrogen donor groups to prevent extensive radical combination. "A study of the techniques to integrally cast copper tubes in copper tuyeres for use in blast furnaces has been carried out. The work has been performed in support of current efforts to produce two-compartment tuyeres having improved water-cooling capacity. A test pattern corresponding to a vertical section of a two-compartment tuyere, and including a cast-in-place copper tube, was used to investigate such variables as tube preparation, tube coolant, pouring temperature, pouring rate and gating design. Successful castings, either with a good metalfurgical bond or good intimate contact between the tube and the casting, were produced, with all combinations of gating system and position of the tube tried. However, the pouring temperature, the pouring rate and the effectiveness of the coolant are interrelated and must be controlled to produce a good metallurgical bond.IntroductionAs part of its contribution to, and in collaboration with, the Copper Casting for the Steel Industry Committee, CANMET has undertaken research into the methods and techniques needed for the integral casting of copper tubes into high-conductivity copper castings.The objective was to produce two-compartment copper blast furnace tuyeres in which the water-cooled nose compartment consists of a copper tube metallurgically bonded to the wall of the high-conductivity copper casting. This design, developed in the UK, has demonstrated a much extended service life with attendant economies; unscheduled shutdown of blast furnaces due to tuyere failure is a significant problem in the steel industry. The Canadian steel industry believes that this design will replace the currently used single-compartment tuyere in blast furnaces within a few years.The technology to produce these tuyeres does not exist in Canada. One of the main features is the inclusion of a smooth-walled cooling channel in the nose, which permits high velocity cooling water to be employed. A second compartment acts as a reservoir backup, should failure in the nose occur. This would allow continued use of the tuyere for a period of time, permitting a scheduled shutdown for repair s. To assist the Canadian producers of tuyeres to maintain their market, and the Canadian steel industry to have a reliable domestic supply, it is important that the necessary technology for the production of two-compartment tuyeres be developed and transferred to industry."

"Extensive deposits of tectonically sheared coal of the Mist Mountain Formation occur in the south eastern Canadian Cordillera. The quality of the coal varies markedly; it is commonly partially oxidized and poor washability characteristics.Oxidation of the sheared coal has been promoted by its fine grain-size and by fractures in adjacent rocks which have facilitated penetration of atmospheric oxygen and circulation of oxygenated waters. Oxidation has resulted in a loss of coking power, a decrease in vitrinite reflectance, and an Increase In oxygen and decrease in carbon content.The relatively low clean coal yields of the sheared coal are primarily the result of the greater volume of mineral matter present, which in turn reflects both the greater susceptibility to shearing of coal with abundant rock partings and the shearing and dissemination throughout the coal of formerly discrete rock partings. The high ash content of some sheared coal seams may be artificial, resulting from the difficulty in distinguishing and separating sheared roof rock and floor strata from the coal seam during mining. There is little variation between the quality of the washed sheared and unsheared coal, with the exception of the somewhat higher ash content of the clean sheared coal compared to clean unsheared coal. This poorer separation of the ash from the organic fraction of the sheared coal is considered to be a product of the large amount of fines present as well as the local formation of aggregates of organic material and ash resulting from plastic flowage of the vitrite and clarite during shearing.IntroductionIn the southeastern Canadian Cordillera, coal seams of the Lower Cretaceous Mist Mountain Formation (Gibson, 1979 were in part sheared and comminuted during Late Cretaceous and Tertiary tectonism . "The past 14 years have brought an increased awareness of environmental problems. Surface mining for mineral aggregates has been one o f the issues which ha s sparked fierce controversy and debate. Various level s of government, industry, and the public have engaged in an unending battle for adequate planning, regulation, and rehabilitation of pits and quarries. Agreement has seldom been reached and, as a result, few standards, guidelines or policies have been established, or enforced province-wide.Surface mining ca uses a number of environmental problems including noise, dust, water table disturbances, aesthetic degradation, increased traffic, and health and safety hazards. These problems are particularly serious in urbanizing area s, where people are exposed to the mining operations. Associated with the operational phase of surface mining are the issues generated by the multiplicity of abandoned pits and quarries which dot the countryside. These large, gaping, often dangerous waterfilled holes are a blight o n the landscape, and represent a misuse of land.The environmental problems connected with pit s and quarries are compounded by the fact that accessible reserves of mineral aggregates are being lost through the process o f urbanization. In addition, restrictive zoning at the municipal level is restricting access to even more aggregate rich land. This results in the paradox that the very urbanizing process which creates the demand for aggregates is rapidly reducing the available supply. These problems have stimulated the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to call for a province-wide program of inventory, assessment and planning for the protection o f high-quality reserves in Official Plans. These proposals have met with strong opposition from municipal leaders, who are jealously protecting their autonomy.Environmental management education is a prerequisite for all parties involved in pit and quarry planning, regulation or rehabilitation. To this end the following bibliography of selected articles with attention given to the Ontario experience, should provide helpful information on these topics."
