A high accuracy Burnett apparatus for use at 12,000 psi and 0° to 65° C has been constructed at the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center. The apparatus is patterned after Burnett's original apparatus, but the working pressure is much higher and elastic distortion can be essentially eliminated. An operating procedure to permit faster experimental measurements is suggested.

An electrical method for the continuous determination of propagation velocities in opaque, confined explosives, and propellants is described. A resistance element imbedded in the reactive material generates electrical signals that are displayed oscillographically and indicate the position and progress of a reactive zone associated with progress of a reactive zone associated with burning or detonation. The method is applicable to both solids and liquids.

During 1990-1999, a total of 458 fires occurred in all coal mining categories; 157 of those fires caused 164 injuries and 2 fatalities. The greatest number of fues and fire injuries occurred at surface mines, whch also had the highest risk rate values. A total of 66 fuefighting interventions were required. Of these, there were 25 mine rescue team interventions in underground mines, including 5 mobile equipment firefighting interventions, and 41 fire brigade and fire department interventions at all surface operations, including 19 mobile equipment interventions. In all, 50 fires destroyed or heavily damaged equipment (including 16 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of other firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. A total of 1 14 fires were detected late by smoke, and 42 fires were not detected.

Many gold-bearing ores in the Western United States also contain small amounts of mercury. The presence of mercury creates potential pollution and health hazards during several steps in gold processing. An investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to develop techniques for removing mercury from cyanide mill solutions by selective electrowinning to reduce the potential hazards. Sixty-five percent of the mercury was selectively electrowon from synthetic carbon strip solution at applied potentials of 1.00 to 1.50 V when using a mercury-coated platinum or copper plate cathode. Increasing the active surface area by using mercury-coated copper wool resulted in up to % pct of the mercury being electrowon from mill carbon strip solutions that contained 1.9 to 20 ppm Hg, 20 to 345 ppm Au, and 0.35 to 39.5 ppm Ag. About 98 pct of the silver was electrowon with the mercury onto the mercury cathode. Gold extraction ranged between 0 and 20 pet. Results of the investigation showed that choice of cathode material was critical to the success of the process. Selectivity was not achieved using uncoated steel wool cathodes.

This publication presents the results of a laboratory investigation of displacement of gas by injection or imbibition of water into sandstone models under essentially isobaric conditions. A brief discussion of scaling requirements is included. The influence on residual gas saturation of independently varying the parameters of dimensional ratios of the porous media, rates and methods of flooding, surface tension, initial water saturation, and permeability is shown. Of these variables, increased initial water saturation and decreased surface tension reduced residual gas saturation significantly, whereas variations in flooding rate and dimensional ratios had no apparent effect. No correlation was evident between absolute permeability and residual gas saturation.

"SUMMARYThis report is one of a series giving results of laboratory and pilot-plant investigations of the concentration of western manganese ores begun in December 1940. Data given summarize results of laboratory investigation of three samples of complex oxide manganese ores from the Madeline property, Lake View, and Victory claims, Clallam County (Olympic Peninsula), Wash. The samples represented an extremely intimate and complex association of manga¬nese oxide minerals with silica and iron.Owing to the complex nature of the ores, no effective concentration by ore-dressing methods was possible. No high-grade manganese concentrates were produced and the highest recovery at minimum accountable grade was only 55 percent on one of the ores tested.Since the Clallem County ores did not respond to ore-dressing methods, leaching processes were investigated, results of which are to be published in a separate report.INTRODUCTIONOre-beneficiation tests were conducted on three samples of manganese oxide ere from the Madeline, Lakeview, and Victory claims, Clallam County, Wash. The ores are extremely complex because of the unusually small size of manganese mineral particles, their mode of occurrence, and relationship to the gangue. None of the three ores was amenable to the production of high-grade manganese products by ore-dressing methods."

"Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MNExperimental and correlated stage responses (the fraction of particles entering an impactor that are collected on a stage) are presented for the Andersen Mark III and Marple personal cascade impactors. The impactors were operated upright and fully assembled so that interstage interference and wall losses could be properly studied. The observed stage responses showed maxima that fell significantly short of unity, meaning that a monodisperse aerosol is never collected exclusuvely on one stage, but is distributed among several stages and internal losses. Correlations for the stage responses are presented so that the experimental results can be used to determine size distributions with available data-inversion algorithms. Simulations with log-normal distributions show significant differences between dpa50 histograms and the more accurate distributions that result by taking the response functions into account.Cascade impactors are widely used for the measurement of aerosol size distributions; their ruggedness and simplicity of operation make them an attractive choice for a variety of environments. In one common application, the aerosol of interest is drawn through the impactor, and the amount deposited on each stage is determined gravimetrically. The primary objective is to extract as much information as possible about the initial size distribution from the resulting set of weights. Unfortunately, the reconstruction of contin-uous size distributions from finite data sets is an ill-posed problem. Not surprisingly, a variety of such reconstruction techniques are presently in use; the success of each method depends on the particular nature of the aerosol sample and the instrument response.Inversion of impactor data by any of these techniques requires that the response functions for each stage be known. The stage response function gives the fraction of particles entering the impactor that deposits on that stage. Values of the response function range from zero to one, and depend on impactor operating conditions (e.g., geometry, flow rate, and gas properties) and particle properties (e.g., diameter, density, and shape factor). As interstage interferences and particle losses will affect each stage's response, experimental determination of stage responses should be made for fully assembled impactors. Unfortunately, impactor stage response functions are rarely reported; rather, single-stage efficiency curves are given that provide an incomplete description of impactor performance.This paper presents experimental stage responses for two fully assembled cascade impactors: the Andersen Mark III and Marple personal impactors (model 298, Andersen Samplers, Inc., Atlanta, Ga.). These calibrations were performed with monodisperse liquid droplets for both impactors and also with monodisperse solid spheres for the Marple personal impactor. The calibration results for the Mark 111 impactor presented here have been previously reported in the response-function format (Rader et al., 1989). The calibration results for the Marple personal impactor, however, were originally presented in the single-stage efficiency for¬mat (Rubow et al., 1987) and have been reanalyzed in this work. Losses within both impactors are considered, and their treat¬ment within data inversion techniques is dis¬cussed. In addition, correlations for each impactor's response functions are presented so that these calibration results can be easily included in data-inversion algorithms. Size distribution inversions using these response correlations are compared with the standard cut-point method for two lognormal test dis¬tributions."

"INTRODUCTION Geological examination of the Iron Mountain beryllium deposits was begun by a field part 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in May 1942. Later in that month the occurrence was examined by the author and C. H. Johnson, of the Bureau of Mines, and a preliminary exploratory program was outlined. Trenching and sampling began about June 15 and were completed in July 1942. A large tonnage of beryllium-bearing material was indicate by this preliminary survey, so that additional funds wore allotted for further trenching and sampling, underground exploratory work, and diamond drilling. This later program was initiated in July 1942 and was completed in May 1943. 4/ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilisation of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Investigation of the discharge duration power and current relation required for ignition. The current and power amplitude-discharge time curve was found to flatten out over 3 ms. It is concluded that discharges having at least 3 ms power maximum are required for reliable testing of the ignition limit for resistive circuits. Investigation of the effect of molten cathode on the discharge duration and igniting ability of the discharge. The surface tension of the liquid metal causes a very fast separation and consequently a much shorter discharge duration than the solid electrode would have. The minimum discharge voltage effect overrides the effects of the temperature of electrode, material, or atmosphere. Investigation of the effect of different surface layers on the discharge duration. Oxides and sulfates were found to give significantly longer duration than the "clean" metal itself in most cases. The lowest ignition current was obtained with CdS04 coatings. Ignition was obtained with 0.7A at 30V, which is below the corresponding minimum igniting current obtained from the BASEEFA curve for circuits containing Cd, Zn or Mg.

The purpose of this article is to describe briefly the operation of a 6-ton blast furnace on a charge of bauxite, limestone, iron ore, and cast-iron turnings and to point out the bearing which smelting such a charge has upon the production of alumina cement. One object of the experiment, conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Aluminum Co. of America, was to determine whether tae so-called Pedersen process3 can be applied to the blast furnace. This process consists of smelting a charge of bauxite, iron ore, and. limestone, and results in to products. One is a slag containing about 50 per cent of A1203 and is intended for use in manufacturing aluminum, and the other is iron low in sulphur. Complete details of the test are published in other reports4. Blast-furnace slag is now recognized as a satisfactory and economical raw material for making Portland cement, Wm. A. Forbes5 has recently reported that in 1926 an important steel interest used well over 1 million tons of slag in producing about 24 million long, tons of cement. This is equivalent to about ½ ton of slag for each ton of cement. Alumina cement can be made direct in the blast furnace. Its physical character would have to be changed by grinding, but no change in its chemical composition would be necessary.

This publication describes the construction of 43.64 miles of underground tunnel to be used as an aqueduct, known as the West Delaware aqueduct. In the past, the accident history of tunnel operations has not been favorable, the "rule of thumb" being a death for each mile of progress, according to the meager accident statistics available for the tunnel-driving industry. The accident experience at this project and the use of modern equipment established safety and progress records that were accepted by tunnel people as a record at the time. The city of New York comprises 5 boroughs, with a total population of approximately 8 million people, and uses about 1,210 million gallons of water each day. The water supply for the city is the responsibility of the New York City Board of Water Supply. This organization has constructed an extensive aqueduct system, the Delaware aqueduct, to convey water to the city from the distant mountain and river sources in the Catskill Mountains in the Southern Tier areas of New York State (figs. 1 and 2).

[The Bureau of Mines conducted bench-scale studies to develop techniques for stripping tetravalent cerium from tri-n-butyl phosphate solutions. Experiments were conducted in a constant-temperature bath using beakers and mechanical stirring. Ninety-five pct of the cerium was stripped from a 50-pct tri-n-butyl phosphate 50-pct kerosene solution containing 0.18 M cerium in 15 minutes at 50° C using 0.11 M aqueous formaldehyde.]

Curtailment of bauxite importation by enemy activities during World War II focused attention on the necessity of developing domestic deposits of aluminous materials. Large quantities of aluminum ores such as kaolin, siliceous bauxites, high-iron bauxites, anorthosite, and diaspore clays are available but not readily amenable to Bayer processing because of excessive impurities. The Bayer process, which is the only commercial method in use in the United States for producing metallurgical-grade alumina, requires a high Al2O3 bauxite relatively low in SiO2 and Fe2O3. The Bureau of Mines was charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from these low-grade ores. One part of the program was an investigation, in the laboratory and pilot plant, of the recovery of alumina by the lime-soda sinter process. Ores comprising kaolin, diasporic clays, anorthosite, and siliceous bauxites have been investigated and studied in the laboratory and pilot plant, and a series 'of reports covering these investigations has been prepared.

Video technology is becoming an important tool for many designers of industrial training programs. This report describes how trainers at the Minntac Mine, Mt. Iron, MN, have developed videocassettes of safe job procedures (SJP's) for training miners assigned to perform unfamiliar work tasks. All steps necessary for videocassette production, from idea to finished product, as well as the required equipment and prices, are listed and/or briefly explained. Minntac officials believe that the SJP videocassettes have contributed significantly to a reduction in mine accidents.

The Mesabi iron district of Minnesota has a potential production of over 50 million tons of iron are annually. The large shipments of ore each year are gradually depleting the reserves, and if the present rate of production is to be maintained there must be a growth in the present available ore supply. Growth is a natural course. The growth of a city may be affected by the addition of city blocks or by the improvement of utilities necessary for its betterment. These may go on in the order named or concurrently. The city-block type of growth of the Mesabi has been tremendous, and the "betterment" type has followed in due course. Probably the former has reached its limit, and if so, more time will be allotted to the latter. It is not the in¬tent of this paper to present either a eulogy of the wonderful mining methods or a history of the milling, but it is pertinent to say that if the lean-ore area continues to produce, the continuance will be more the result of further improvement of milling methods non well under way than of extension of boundaries by the city block plan of growth.

Tests were conducted in the Experimental coal mine to study some of the factors that should be considered in fighting mine fires and to obtain data on the effectiveness of different types of extinguishing agents. The investigation was confined to class "A" fires in a zone 20 feet long, involving coal burning on the floor, on the floor and ribs, and on the floor, ribs, and roof of the mine entry. It was determined that the time elapsed between ignition and attack of the fire is very important. A fire in the early stages was found to be controlled more easily and quickly than a similar fire that had burned longer. It was also found that, under suitable conditions, a fire in the floor, ribs, and roof develops very rapidly and consequently might spread over a considerable area if not brought under control quickly. The ventilating current affects fire-controlling operations markedly. Attack in intake or fresh air is highly advantageous, the chief inconvenience being the radiant heat from the fire. Attack in direct return air was impossible for the fires tested in this investigation, because of the high temperature. Universal-type gas masks for noxious gases and smoke offered no protection against the intense heat. Approach to a fire in the return air behind a water-fog curtain is not feasible unless the direction of air flow can be reversed. In one" test fresh air was carried to the fire area with a line brattice. Although the entire controlling operation was in fresh air and masks were not necessary, it was considerably more difficult to control the fire than when a similar fire was attacked in intake air.

"These proceedings consist of papers presented at a Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminar on postdisaster survival and rescue research. Several seminars are held each year to bring the latest results of Bureau research to the attention of the mining industry as quickly as possible.INTRODUCTIONThe postdisaster research program is directed toward research and development of technology and equipment that increases the chances of a miner surviving or being rescued after an underground mine disaster. A disaster is an accident of major proportions, and it may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal egress from the mine is cut off. This often necessitates a rescue operation and a means of keeping the trapped miners alive while they await rescue. The Bureau is currently pursuing research to develop the technology that will enhance the ability of miners to survive such an occurrence. The research is divided into two basic problem areas, survival and rescue. Both areas are concerned with the inability of miners and rescue teams to cope with the postaisaster environment, such as toxic gases, unstable roof conditions, water flooding, and lack of oxygen. In addition, research is also conducted to find ways of locating and quickly reaching trapped miners. Most of the research conducted by the Bureau has been directed toward the postdisaster problems associated with coal mines. However, most of the research results are also applicable to noncoal mines as well.The papers presented in these proceedings address some of the recent research conducted by the Bureau of Mines that has been directed toward the postdisaster problems outlined above. The topics covered range from an overview of the technology developed for oxygen selfrescuers to training programs for mine rescue. Any questions or comments pertaining to this research are encouraged and appreciated. Part 2 gives short abstracts of publications that appeared during fiscal year 1964; in general; the research reported in these publications antedates the report period. Part 3 describes a short-term investigation into safety problems associated with shipping of molten sulfur; this investigation is not at present destined for publication elsewhere.
