Efficient recovery of precious metals from process solutions is essential for improving process economics. Traditionally, precious metals are relatively effectively recovered from waste streams via precipitation or cementation. However, these approaches have a number of drawbacks, including poor water balance, creation of environmentally unfriendly waste streams, and losses of precious metals. Ion exchange technology is an alternative for the recovery of precious metals from waste or low-grade streams. This technology allows the recovery of the precious metals to extremely low levels (micrograms per litre) with relatively high upgrade ratios from the solution onto the resin without major water balance concerns, while the impact on the environment could be minimized or avoided. Research was conducted on the recovery of platinum group metals and gold from different low-grade and waste streams from one of the precious metals refineries in South Africa by means of ion exchange. Various functionalities and matrices (granular and fibrous) of ion exchange materials were evaluated. The results from these studies indicated that in some cases ion exchange could be very effective for the recovery of precious metals, and that the PGM concentration could be reduced to < 1 mg/L. The upgrading ratios of the various PGMs onto the specific fibres were relatively high for the specific streams evaluated, which might in some cases justify incineration of the loaded material instead of stripping and recycling the adsorbent. The cost of direct incineration for one of the waste streams tested would be less than 1% of the value of the PGMs recovered. However, the adsorbent has to be carefully selected and the process design optimized for each specific stream.

Each mining project goes through the same life-cycle, from prospecting and exploration to closure and post-closure periods. This prompts the question whether the closure of a mine constitutes the end of its life-cycle or whether the decommissioned mine can be employed for some other purpose. Best-practice references indicate that there are many viable options. In our opinion, the production of service water is one such option. Laboratory research was carried out on the water from a flooded underground coal mine in Ostrava- Karviná coal district, Czech Republic, concerning the production of service water from pumped minewater. The research proved the practical feasibility of service or process water production. Given the effect of global climate change with regard to water resources, good prospects for this additional resource can be assumed since the water has to be pumped in any case for safety reasons.

For many years, mine-impacted water has been regarded as a problem and linked to long-term environmental liabilities. However, this water can be a renewable and a sustainable resource, provided that it is managed in a responsible and sensible manner. South Africa’s National Water Resource Strategy (NWRS, 2013) considers water that can be used to contribute to economic activity to be a water resource. Although all water resources are considered as belonging to the State, government does not appear to have meaningfully explored the use of mineimpacted water to contribute to the country’s economic activity. Africa is blessed with more sunshine than anywhere else, apart from Australia, yet we see no rollout of vast quantities of solar panels to ensure every African family has access to affordable power. This suggests that governments are incapable of managing such a free resource. At the same time, apart from the equatorial areas, water is a seriously constrained resource and yet we expect the same entities to manage a commodity none of us can live without. This paper explores the conversion of mine-impacted water from waste to a resource and how the inclusion of other stakeholders (such as water users, landowners, and ordinary South Africans) could benefit the process.

"SynopsisThe combustion and co-combustion behaviour of macadamia nut shell, high-ash coal, and anthracite, along with their blends was studied using thermogravimetry. The reactivities of all samples were analysed in air, oxygen, and CO2 atmospheres and at different heating rates from 10 to 40°C/min. Macadamia shell was found to have a lower ash content, 0.36%, than coal with 27.49% ash. The calorific values were similar, 19.64 MJ/kg and 19.44 MJ/kg respectively. The differential thermogravimetric results indicate that as the heating rates increase the ignition, peak, and burnout temperatures increase significantly, leading to high combustion rates. The interaction between the fuels was evaluated using the weighted average model, and the results indicated that there is more synergetic interaction between 20% macadamia plus 80% coal under oxygen than in air and CO2 atmospheres. The results of the investigation provide the combustion and co-combustion characteristics of various samples and their blends and indicate their combustion compatibilities. IntroductionThe global macadamia nut industry is developing at a very rapid rate. South Africa is currently the world’s third largest producer, with a production of about 35 000 t as of 2012 (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 2013), compared to 840 t produced in 1996. The greatest numbers of the macadamia nut farms in South Africa can be found in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, with Mpumalanga as the largest producing area. There are many factors influencing the increased demand for macadamia nuts, the most important factor perhaps being their nutritional value (California Dried Fruit and Nuts, 2011; MPC, 2014) and their suitability as a feedstock for manufacturing cosmetics, bakery products, nut paste, chocolates, sauces, and ice-cream. As a fuel, macadamia shell has a high heating value ‘as-fired’ of about 20.71 MJ/kg (Vhathvarothai et al., 2013), which could in turn be used in drying the nust, and the shell could also be milled and applied as a fertilizer."

During the past ten years there has been an upsurge of interest in the development of selective ion exchange resins and solvents, and of ion-exchange and solvent extraction equipment tailored to the special requirements of mineral-processing circuits. It is therefore not surprising that the recent Symposium on Ion Exchange and Solvent Extraction in Mineral Processing, held at the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) on 7th and 8th February, 1980, was a resounding success. This Symposium, organized jointly by NIM. The Proceedings of the above Symposium have been edited and published by the Symposium Committee. The Symposium was sponsored by the Australian Coal Association, the Joint Coal Board, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The Symposium was very well attended, with presentations from fourteen countries, including all the major coal-producing countries of the world. The Proceedings are presented in two parts: the Symposium Part and the Workshop Part. The Symposium Part deals basically with the theoretical aspects of outbursts and high-gas emissions in mines, while the Workshop Part is more practically oriented and describes case studies, and the management systems, and drilling technologies used in underground mines.

Ores from a single deposit may exhibit extensive variability in their mineralogy and texture. The ability to quantify this variability and link it to mineral processing performance is one of the primary goals of process mineralogy. This study focuses on the effect of alteration in three platinum group element ore samples from the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe – two of which were more pristine compared to the third, which was locally classified as ‘oxidized’ ore. These ores are known to be characterized by varying degrees of alteration, resulting in numerous challenges in flotation and affecting both grade and recovery. Alteration, by near-surface oxidation, of the valuable base metal sulphides and platinum group minerals resulted in lower flotation recoveries of Cu, Ni, Pt, and Pd. Evidence of incipient oxidation was more readily observed in the base metal sulphide assemblage than the platinum group mineral assemblage, even though the loss in recovery (because of oxidation) was most significant for Pd. Alteration through hydration resulted in a significant increase in mass pull and dilution of concentrate grade through the inadvertent recovery of naturally floating gangue comprising composite orthopyroxene and talc particles. In this study, the amount of naturally floating gangue was more strongly correlated with the talc grain size distribution than the grade of talc in the flotation feed. The oxidation and hydration alteration reactions are not necessarily mutually exclusive, although one may be more dominant than the other, giving rise to ore variability.

Background- History The most significant change in mining since the late 1970?s has been the emergence of very large scale mining operations , which have been developed to ensure profitability with relatively low grade ores. These large tonnage operations have resulted in the development of larger unit sized machines in all operations of beneficiation, solid-liquid separation and dewatering. Often only a few flotation lines are installed and tonnages up to 25 ktpd and beyond are not uncommon. The increased throughputs have led to the development of circular, reactor type tank designs. The reactor cell system is the most up to date flotation cell design to utilise the principles of circular cell design. The Svedala DV mechanism was specially developed to suit the RCS machine giving good solids handling characteristics and excellent metallurgical performance. Development of UG2 ore type flotation equipment The equipment was developed and optimised by Svedala process from 1995. A higher energy specification was requested by industry. This amounted to 3kW/m3 for installed volume. Existing designs were at 1.5kW/m3. Hence various modifications were required to achieve the required power input. The first 50m3 machines were installed and developed at Impala Platinum?s UG2 circuit over a one year period. Once reliability and performance was achieved, over 300 large volume flotation cells were installed at Anglo Platinum and Lonmin operations as well. Pilot Plant Development The Impala Platinum High Energy pilot plant was commissioned in 2002 and had an installed power exceeding 5kW/m3. It was operated for over a year at the tailings dam booster station and was fundamental to the large scale scavenging plant design. All experience in overcoming mechanical and operational problems was applied in scale up design principles. A very robust mechanism was designed to accommodate the additional power input from installed motors, as well as the high SG (>1.5) of the feed source. The pilot plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.

"In 2017, Petra Diamonds completed the construction and commissioning of a modern, fit-for-purpose diamond processing plant at Cullinan Diamond Mine (CDM). The design of CDM’s milling circuit is unconventional in that it comprises an autogenous (AG) mill with a grate discharge with large ports, low-revolution jaw crushers, and high-pressure grinding roll crushers with large operating gaps. In this paper we review the design to provide guidance on what is expected from the milling circuit and to demonstrate how the design aims to address challenges experienced in the old plant, which was based on staged crushing technology. We assessed the performance of the CDM AG milling circuit from commissioning and early production stages to examine its impact along multiple dimensions. In the assessment we sought to understand the lessons from our milling circuit regarding diamond liberation, energy consumption, and the future of diamond processing as a whole. IntroductionCullinan Diamond Mine (CDM), previously known as Premier Mine, is an underground diamond mine owned by Petra Diamonds. Petra Diamonds is a leading independent diamond mining group and a growing supplier of rough diamonds to the international market. Petra Diamonds is listed on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange under the ticker ‘PDL’. Petra’s total resource of 305 million carats ranks third by size after De Beers and ALROSA (Petra Diamonds, 2018).CDM was established in 1902. The mine rose to prominence in 1905, when the 3106 carat Cullinan Diamond — the largest rough diamond of gem quality ever found — was discovered there. The mine has produced over 750 stones that are larger than 100 carats and more than a quarter of all the world's diamonds that are larger than 400 carats. Cullinan is renowned as a source of large, high-quality gem diamonds, including Type II stones, as well as being the world’s most important source of very rare blue diamonds (Petra Diamonds, 2018)."

INTRODUCTION To prepare the reader adequately, reference should be made to the paper &apos;The Pioneering of Fully Mechanized Longwall Coal Mining in South Africa&apos; by R. T. Naude and M. J. Deats, published in the February, 1967, edition of the Journal. At the time mechanized longwalling had been proved operationally feasible with encouraging results since its inception in South Africa in mid 1965. Subsequently, further top seam panels were successfully extracted with improved productivity and with some modification to equipment. In 1968, after an overseas visit by mine officials, equipment specific to suit local conditions was acquired and lower seam trials commenced. Despite initial obstacles and difficulties the first panel was successfully mined. Modification and improvements to equipment and techniques resulted in the second lower seam panel being extracted economically during 1969-1970 and with productivity exceeding even that of top seam faces. During extraction of the second lower seam panel, gradual and complete surface subsidence occurred over the panel without affecting face operations. Rock mechanics investigations had originally indicated some uncertainty regarding adverse dolerite sill behaviour which could have caused longwall mining to be hazardous. All such doubts have now been removed. RESUMÉ AS AT FEBRUARY, 1967 Mechanized longwalling was introduced in 1965 on an experimental basis in an effort to improve productivity in the newer area of the mine and to increase the quality of the comparatively dirty run of mine feed to the washing plant. In addition advantages could be predicted in the long term by better utilizing reserves of straight coking coal and increasing the life of the mine. The top seam unit was obtained on a rental basis and by the beginning of 1967, two panels, the first having a face length of 215 m, a panel length of 345 m, seam section of 1 219 mm, and the second the same face length, a panel length of 453 m and a seam section of 1 067 mm had been successfully longwalled. At this stage a best month of 24 602 metric tons with an average of 17 364 metric tons per full working month could be reported. Results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment as its own asset and from 1967 onward, the unit has operated on this basis. From the point of view of rock mechanics, the dolerite sill over the first two panels was known to have &apos;bridged&apos;, only the material below the base of the sill having truly &apos;goafed&apos;. No adverse pressure effects had significantly affected face operations except for two &apos;bumps&apos; towards the end of operations in each panel. Gate road maintenance presented no problem. The strong inflows of water experienced on the first face were now known to be associated with an isolated water bearing fault plane and were not experienced on the second face. TOP SEAM EXPERIENCE - MAY, 1966, TO DATE Panel 2 (February, 1966, to November, 1966) The operations in panel 2 (see Fig. 1 for location of panels) continued uneventfully until the final month in this panel. At this stage, the chocks behaved most inconsistently often lowering under the weight of the canopies alone. Roof trouble became so severe that the unit was unable to produce adequately and blasting of chocks became a daily occurrence. Finally 24 m short of the planned limit it was decided that a complete overhaul was the only solution and the extraction operations commenced. At this time, the only fatal accident associated with longwalling occurred when a Non-White inadvertently fell into the panzer conveyor transfer point at the main gate. Some gate road difficulties in this panel were overcome by bolting tapes to the roof as decking and allowing them to pass over the gate chocks and collapse into the goaf. Two cribbed roof falls were also negotiated by the gate chocks at the face ends without undue difficulties. It was decided in the light of maintenance problems encountered on this face that the best solution would be to appoint a foreman solely in charge of face maintenance crews. This step has to a large extent contributed to success achieved subsequently. Panel 2-face length 213 m panel length 456 m cutting height 1 092 mm average monthly output 16 443 t best month 19 130 t Panel 3 (December, 1966, to June, 1967) By the end of 1966 results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment. This was negotiated and the unit has operated as such to the present date. Prior to installation in panel 3, all face equipment was thoroughly overhauled underground and the chocks boost-tested to yield-load. The costs of overhauling, including almost complete hose replacement, were much higher than anticipated. Advice had been received that complete hose replacement was common practice after +/- 18 months&apos; operation. Shortly after commencement of operations in panel 3 the chocks again failed as they had towards the end of panel 2. At this stage, the suppliers advised that the valve gear should have been repaired during the overhaul as the needle and seat seals could no longer be relied upon. This operation was impossible to carry out on the face and would have been e1ttremely time consuming. Fortunately a new type of valve gear was then available from the suppliers, termed the capsule-type valve, and a complete change over could be made on the face. In my view, the establishment of the level at which South African gold output is at some kind of optimum is an interesting though somewhat academic exercise. Contribution by D. M. Hawkins* The thesis of the paper is a very interesting one, but, before it is used as the basis of any firm proposals to restructure the mining industry, which changes may be irreversible, one should be very sure that the basis of the calculations is sound. The interactions between apatite and hematite were studied through zeta potential and stability experiments, for this paper. The zeta potential measurements were conducted in both background electrolyte and mineral supernatants. The difference in electrokinetic properties of minerals in the presence and absence of supernatant was explained in terms of the dissolution of minerals and the subsequent readsorption of dissolved species at the mineral-water interface. The stability measurements in individual and mixed mineral systems were also performed to identify the extent of interaction between apatite and hematite upon their direct contact. The results from stability measurements in individual and mixed mineral systems indicate that there is an interaction between apatite and hematite. The thermal decomposition of carbonate minerals as pre-treatment before smelting reduces the energy requirement for smelting. It can also make the combustion of fossil fuels for heating unnecassary. Thermal decomposition may become important in reducing greenhouse gas emissions when producing ferromanganese alloys while simultaneously reducing electrical energy demand during smelting. A kinetic reaction rate model for the thermal decomposition of manganese ores is presented, based on published reaction rate kinetics for the decomposition of manganese oxides and calcium carbonate. The model was validated against thermogravimetric data for two carbonaceous manganese ore samples and one ferruginous manganese ore sample. The reaction rate model shows that carbonate minerals in the manganese ores are decomposed at temperatures above 900 °C while pyrolusite is decomposed at temperatures from 450 °C to 500 °C. Mn2O3 decomposes rapidly at 550 °C. Braunite decomposition at temperatures below 1000 °C was negligible. The presence of organic carbon in the samples led to further reduction of the samples during thermal treatment.

The influence of solution treatment on the phase evolution and tensile properties of Ti-Mo alloys was investigated to assess their potential use in biomedical applications. Phase formation and microstructural evolution were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The mechanical properties were characterized by means of tensile tests and bending strength. XRD analysis showed that solution treatment increased the volume fraction of β phase and supressed the α" phase. The microstructures of the as-cast alloys consisted of β equiaxed grains with sub-grain structures of different sizes, while the solution treated alloys comprised β equiaxed grains only except for Ti- 10.02Mo, which comprised needle-like α" structures. EBSD showed an increase in the volume fraction of the ω and α" phases in all the alloys after solution treatment. The elastic modulus and UTS of all the alloy significantly decreased after solution treatment, except for Ti-15.05Mo,whereas the elongation significantly increased. This work evaluates the deformation behaviour, at warm working temperatures, of green particle-reinforced aluminium composites produced by powder blending in a high-energy ball mill. The work focuses on metal matrix composites (MMCs) based on the 2124-Al alloy, reinforced with 10 or 15 vol.% SiC and metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) based on the 2124-Al alloy, reinforced with 5 or 10 vol.% Al2O3. Three batches for each powder were blended and powder properties such as particle size distribution (PSD) and shape were consistent after blending. It was observed that a more uniform distribution of the reinforcement phase in the aluminium alloy matrix was achieved in 2124-Al/Al2O3 than in 2124- Al/SiC composites. The powders (unreinforced 2124-Al and blended) were initially over-aged at 350°C for 2 hours to reverse any natural ageing that may have occurred prior to use. The over-ageing was incorporated to improve compressibility of the powders with the aim of achieving green compacts with higher integrity. Uniaxial compression tests performed at ambient temperature on a Gleeble® 3500 thermomechanical simulator were unsuccessful as the green compacts fragmented. Engineering stress-strain curves showed that green compacts of unreinforced 2124-Al, 10%SiC MMC and 5%Al2O3 MMNC deformed in a similar manner at ambient temperature and had the same compressive fracture stress of approximately 170 MPa. When the deformation temperature was increased from ambient to warm working temperatures (170–280°C) it was observed that electrical resistance heating (the heating mode of the Gleeble®) of unreinforced Al alloy, MMC and MMNC green compacts did not occur. This was attributed to the high electrical conductivity of aluminium, which resulted in poor heat generation due to the low electrical resistance in the samples. It was presumed that the small sample size (d=8 mm, h=12 mm) also caused rapid heat loss. After further experimentation, the green compacts were heated successfully by insulating the samples to retain heat. It was found that at 280°C, increasing the soaking time from 6 to 20 minutes decreased flow stress and improved plastic flow in the 2124-Al/10%SiC green compact.

Jackleg rock drills expose their operators to high hand-arm vibration levels. To address this problem, an antivibration handle has been developed. The antivibration properties of the handle were achieved through a suspension based on a hinge design, achieved with a torsion spring and o-rings. To provide some bench marking for this new handle and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. Testing of four antivibration handles on the test bench have shown reductions of the overall weighted acceleration level in the order of 54 % to 60 %, with most of the attenuation occurring in the zh-axis at the rock drill percussion frequency.

Accretions often form in furnaces when slag and charge materials attach to the refractory wall and build up over time. Accretion formation is usually unwanted because it reduces the working volume of the reactor and hinders material flow through the reactor. However, in some instances a thin, stable accretion layer may be desirable to protect the underlying refractory material. In order to prevent and/or manage accretion formation, it is important to understand the underlying principles of this phenomenon in the particular reactor. Excessive accretion formation hampered production at the Exxaro FerroAlloys ferrosilicon melting and atomization plant. This plant uses induction furnaces in which a 15% silicon-iron alloy is produced by batch smelting a mixture of ferrosilicon of 75%Si grade and low-carbon steel. The molten ferrosilicon alloy is then gas-atomized to a powdered product for use as a dense medium in mineral processing plants. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different impurity levels in the ferrosilicon feed material on the extent of accretion formation as well as the effect on the accretion properties, which influence the ease of accretion removal upon furnace shut-down. Refractory and accretion samples were collected after a furnace shut-down and characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy. It was concluded that the trace elements in the FeSi-75 feed material (Al, Ca, Mn) were mostly responsible for accretion formation, but that rust on the low-carbon steel and oxidation of the steel contributed to accretion attachment to the lining. The total contaminant content, calcium to aluminium ratio in the FeSi-75 feed material, and thereby the liquid to solids ratio in the accretion at temperature determine the strength of attachment as well as growth of the accretion.

The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African industry, with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel and possibly more pressing need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. It is in these essential areas that chronic shortages continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to meet the needs of the South African mining industry, in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.

Mine-impacted water, including acid mine drainage (AMD), is a global problem. While precipitation of dissolved metals and neutralization of acidity from mine-impacted water is accomplished relatively easily with lime addition, removal of sulphate to permissible discharge limits is challenging. This paper presents a high-level comparison of four sulphate removal technologies, namely reverse osmosis, ettringite precipitation, barium carbonate addition, and biological sulphate reduction. Primarily operating costs, based on reagent and utility consumptions, are compared. Each process is shown to be subject to a unique set of constraints which might favour one over another for a specific combination of location and AMD composition. Access to and cost of reagents would be a key cost component to any of the processes studied. The total cost calculated for each process also depends on the type of effluents that are allowed to be discharged.
