INTRODUCTION Ambient concentrations of radon and its daughter products have been measured and analyzed by a number of investigators for a variety of purposes. Principal among these purposes have been: (1) descriptive, to characterize the distribution and changes in concentrations under various conditions; (2) research in the use of radon as a tracer gas in the study of atmospheric characteristics and motions, such as eddy mass transfer, diffusivity profiles, large scale circulations, and the like; and (3) the use of radon as an atmospheric tracer in exploration for uranium deposits.* This information forms the basic data for this paper and for its placing the ambient natural, or non-anthropogenic, radon concentrations into the perspective of ambient radon health standards and lung cancer risk calculations. To enable better understanding of some aspects of the ambient radon data, review and analysis is also performed on selected measurements of radon emanation or flux from the surface of the earth into the atmosphere. These measurements have generally been made for purposes similar to those for ambient radon, i.e., (1) description of radon emanation characteristics; or (2) to support and justify the use of ambient concentration measurements in atmospheric research; or (3) in exploration for uranium. Interest is also developing in the use of such measurements for earthquake prediction. In addition, to complete the perspective, brief examination is given to anthropogenic ambient and flux radon measurements related to the mining and milling of uranium, so that comparison can he made with the values from natural sources. As a frame of reference we cite here previous summaries of studies which have presented representative values and ranges of ambient concentrations and emanation rates. H. Israel, in the Compendium of Meterorology (1951), cites eight studies of ambient radon concentrations which we have selected as representative of non-anomalous continental values. Their means generally range from [0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1 with the smallest reported minimum of zero and the largest maximum 0.53 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.10 with a standard deviation of 0.03 pCi lit-1. Means over oceans are much smaller, and the data scarcer, with only three values ranging from 0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1 and a mean of 0.0016 pCi lit-1.] Thirteen studies from Israel's list were selected as representative of mountainous terrain. These data, except for the cases of higher elevations, frequently show significantly higher values than the average cases in non-mountainous terrain described-above. The averages range from 0.10 to 0.59 pCi lit-l; the smallest minimum is zero and the largest maximum is 9.2 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.30 with a standard deviation of 0.17 pCi lit-1. Israel also cites five studies of radon emanation (flux) from the earth's surface. These show a mean of 0.40 pCi-2m-2 sec-1 and a range of from 0.21 to 0.74 pCi m-2 sec-1. Data on flux are naturally scarcer in the literature than data on ambient concentrations, because of the greater interest in and utility of the ambient information. In this paper we also give special consideration to observations of the variability in time and space of radon flux rates, and to the impact of these phenomena on the use of such data for a variety of purposes. NATURAL(NON-ANTHROPOGENIC)AMBIENT RADON CONCENTRATIONS We have examined the following reports for the data selected for this category; these studies were generally intended to describe radon characteristics in the atmosphere. Jonassen and Wilkening (1970); Bradley and Pearson (1970); Wilkening (1970); Lambert, et al (1970); Pearson and Moses (1966); and DickPeddie, et al (1974). Another set of studies which was reviewed was selected because the investigators made ambient radon measurements in the course of examining the use of radon as a tracer in atmospheric research. This set consists of: Israel and Horbert (1970); Carlson and Prospero (1972); Subramanian, et al (1977); Larson (1978); Cohen, et al (1972); Hosler (1966); and Shaffer and Cohen (1972). Finally, unpublished data from uranium exploration activities (Milly and Thayer, 1976) was analyzed. [Treating the ocean cases first, the mean values are generally consistent with those quoted earlier from Israel (0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1); they range from 0.001 to 0.011 pCi lit-1, with 0.003 the most frequently reported value. Continental values, from eight studies, range in means from 0.07 to 0.41 pCi lit-1 (not including mineralized areas, or "uranium country", discussed later), with maxima as high as 2.4 pCi lit -l. For comparison, the means from Israel are 0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1, with a maximum of 0.53 pCi lit-1. Control of radiation hazards in mines is only one of many goals of the Bureau of Mines. Radiation research is only a small part of the Bureau's mine health and safety research program. In this paper I will describe the mission and programs of the entire Bureau of Mines, with emphasis on the mine health and safety program of which our radiation research is a part. The radiation program and its results will be described in detail by other speakers during this symposium. The Bureau of Mines was established in 1910 and is one of a number of agencies within the Department of Interior. Our mission is given by the Organic Act of the Bureau of Mines, last revised in 1913, which still accurately describes our work today. The amended Organic Act (Public Law 62-386) gives the Bureau authority "... to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining, and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances with a view to improving health conditions, and increasing safety, efficiency, economic development, and conserving resources through the prevention of waste in the mining, quarrying, metallurgical, and other mineral industries; to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries..." Since 1913 at least 52 public laws bearing on Bureau responsibilities have come into force. However, our basic role is still unchanged, i.e. improving health conditions, and increasing safety and efficiency in the mineral industries. The two principal activities of the Bureau are Minerals Information and Analysis and Minerals Research. The Minerals Information and Analysis programs provide the data base and the analytical capability to support the development of effective national mineral policies. Data on the availability, production, and utilization of minerals are collected, interpreted, and analyzed for some 100 commodities. Resources of the most important commodities are evaluated to support policymaking that influences utilization of the Nation's existing and potential mineral supplies. The President's budget for the Mineral Information and Analysis programs in fiscal year 1982 is $34 million. The largest activity of the Bureau is Minerals Research, which is divided into three major programs: Mineral Resources Technology, Minerals Environmental Technology, and Minerals Health and Safety Technology. The principal goal of the Mineral Resources Technology program is to help provide technology to maintain an adequate supply of minerals for the United States. The budget requested by the President for this program in fiscal year 1982 is $41 million. The goal of the Minerals Environmental Technology Program is to create mining and mineral processing operations that are more compatible with the environment. The budget for this program in fiscal year 1982 is $12 million. The largest program of the Bureau is Minerals Health and Safety Technology, which has the goal of providing the technology to protect the health and safety of mine workers. The budget for health and safety research for fiscal year 1982 is $55 million. Our radiation research is part of the health and safety research program. The Bureau of Mines has done research to improve health and safety conditions in mines since it was established in 1910. The research expanded greatly following the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Public Law 91-173) and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977 (Public Law 95-164). These acts provided for increased health and safety regulatory activities, but they also significantly increased the funding available for mine health and safety research by the Bureau of Mines. Funding for the Bureau's health and safety research grew from $12 million in 1970 to $60 million in 1981. The funding in 1982 will be somewhat lower than that for 1981. However, the health and safety program funding is still approximately 40 percent of the total budget of the Bureau of Mines. Of the health and safety budget, 22 percent is spent on research to control health hazards in mines, including radiation hazards, which has a budget in 1982 of approximately $1.1 million. Other mine health hazards which the Bureau is doing research to control include respirable mine dusts which cause black lung and silicosis; excessive noise; toxic gases from explosives and diesel emissions; and excessive heat in deep hot mines. The other 78 percent of the budget is spent on safety research to prevent death and injury to miners from such causes as roof falls, fires, explosions, and accidents involving mining equipment. Over the past decade the majority of the Bureau's health and safety research has been done through outside contracts with private industry and universities. Our policy has been to do some research inhouse to maintain the expertise of Bureau personnel. Contractors are used to do research for which the Bureau does not have the necessary personnel available. The percentage of the program being done by contract has been gradually declining for the past few years, and in 1982 the program will be divided evenly between inhouse and contract research. The inhouse research of the Bureau is done at the 10 research centers located throughout the country. Our radiation research is done at three research centers, Denver, Spokane and Pittsburgh, and by contractors whose work is monitored by project officers at these centers. There are three Federal agencies involved in mine health and safety. These are the Bureau of Mines, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and

Few, if any, of the non-ionizing radiation health hazards to be found in either surface or underground coal mining are uniquely different because of their being found in the work environment. Hence, they can be considered generally for their bio-effects on the worker when found in the mining work environment. The same may not be said, however, for the lack of non-ionizing radiation and its bio-effects, particularly as it relates to underground coal mining. The term "non-ionizing radiation" refers to various forms of electromagnetic radiation of wavelengths longer than those of ionizing radiation. As the wavelength gets longer the energy of electromagnetic radiation decreases. Therefore, all non-ionizing forms of radiation have less energy than cosmic, gamma, and X-radiation. In order of increasing wavelength, non-ionizing radiation includes ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwave, and radiofrequency radiations. The energy frequency and wavelength range of both the ionizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic forces are shown in Table I. To convert the wavelengths of various radiations to Ångström units, one multiplies millimicrons by ten. In a vacuum, all electromagnetic radiation has the same velocity, namely 3 x 1010 centimeters per second. The natural source of radiant energy here on earth is our sun which emits radiation continuously over a wide spectrum. This radiation on average reaching earth ranges from 290 nm in the ultraviolet range to over 2,000 nm in the infrared range with a maximum intensity of about 480 nm in the visual range. You will note this falls into the visible blue wavelength and accounts for our blue sky and blue ocean and deep water effects. We are all familiar with the fact that the passage of solar radiation through the atmosphere to the earth changes the spectrum considerably because the atmosphere absorbs and scatters many of the sun's rays. The ozone in the upper atmosphere absorbs the shorter ultraviolet wavelengths and water vapor absorbs some of the infrared wavelengths. Smoke, dust particles, gas molecules and water droplets scatter the rays, especially those of shorter wavelengths. In addition to the sun, every gas, liquid or solid object at a temperature above absolute 0° radiates energy. Solid objects emit almost continuous spectra. At low temperatures only radiation of the longer wavelengths in the infrared range is emitted, but as the temperature of the object is increased, more and more of the shorter wavelengths are added. This fact is most readily demonstrated by heating a piece of steel. When a piece of steel reaches a temperature of about 1,700° Fahrenheit, it gives off radiation at the red end of the visible spectrum and appears dull red. As the temperature is further increased, the shorter rays are also emitted, until at about 2,100°F, the metal appears white, due to the emission of wavelengths throughout the entire visible range. Gasses, on the other hand, when heated emit radiant energy only at certain wavelengths, which are characteristic of their chemical structure. This latter fact is of importance in underground coal mining as high intensity gas and vapor lamps are becoming more and more utilized for illumination in underground coal mining. The biologic effect of non-ionizing radiation exposure depends upon the type and duration of exposure and on the amount of absorption by the miner. The effects of this radiant energy on the miner fall into four distinct types: (1) the heating effect of infrared radiation, (2) the effect on the eye of visible radiation, (3) the effects of ultraviolet radiation, and (4) the growing potential effects of the misuse of microwave radiation. Each non-ionizing type of radiation will be considered individually. ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION The sun is the major source of ultraviolet radiation, which is of concern in open pit and surface mining at certain seasons and in certain climes necessitating protection for the surface miners under those conditions; nonetheless, there are some man-made sources such as electric arc lights, welding arcs, plasma jets, and special ultraviolet bulbs for illumination underground that demand surveillance in the underground environment to be aware of whether the miners are at risk above the threshold limit values allowable. Since ultraviolet radiation has little penetrating power, the organs that are affected are the skin and the eyes. Ultraviolet radiation is strongly absorbed by nucleic acids and proteins, and the effects in man are largely chemical rather than thermal. Short-term effects on miners include acute changes in the skin. These are of four types: (a) darkening of pigment, (b) erythema (sunburn), (c) increase in pigmentation (tanning) and (d) changes in cell growth. Ultraviolet radiation also causes acute effects on the tissues of the eye. Overexposure can lead to keratitis, inflammation of the cornea, and conjunctivitis. Long-term effects of ultraviolet exposure include an increase in the rate of ageing of the skin with degeneration of skin tissue and a decrease in elasticity. Late effects of ultraviolet on the eye include the development of cataracts. The most serious chronic effect of ultraviolet exposure is skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation effects are increased by some industrial materials and drugs. After exposure to such compounds as cresols, the skin is exceptionally sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. Photosensitivity reactions occur after exposure to a variety of other chemicals and drugs including dyes, phenothiazines, sulfonamides, and sulfanylureas. Water ice pillars far underground mine roof support can be frozen and/or maintained and/or melted on demand. The system to do this consists of a refrigeration brine chiller, brine circulation system and disposable plastic containers. Fusion expansion, resilience to dynamic loads, plastic deformation under stress, and non-contamination of coal or ore are unique properties of ice. Lower labor and material costs are economic advantages of ice far mine structural support. Ice brattices can become ice pillars on retreat. For safety, ice pillars can be placed (by remote control, if necessary) in hazardous sites without human entry.

1.1 GENERALIZED METHODS OF SUPPRESSING THE INFLOW OF GROUND WATER DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS Various methods are used to prevent or minimize the inflow of ground water into underground workings during their excavation. The two most common methods include freezing the saturated rock and grouting using cement, sodium silicate, polyurethane and/or other chemicals. Each of these technologies for combatting the inflow of ground water is effective only under specific hydrogeological conditions. For example, although the freezing of saturated ground is among the more universally adopted methods, it is designed to provide only temporary protection during construction. Before the saturated rock thaws it is necessary to emplace a waterproof liner which is labor intensive, time consuming, and expensive. Consequently, freezing is used only in exceptionally complex hydrogeological conditions, namely in those cases where the water-bearing strata consist of unstable rock or the ground water has an anomalous hydrochemistry. The classical grouting of saturated rock, carried out from the surface or from the face of the underground workings for the purpose of limiting the inflow of ground water during excavation, utilizes both cement and a variety of chemical grouts. Cement grouting has been regarded as the main method of combatting the inflow of ground water in fractured rock throughout the world. In such countries as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Canada, the Republic of South Africa and Great Britain, cement grouting is the main method of reducing the inflow of ground water during the excavation of mine openings. In Great Britain and the FRG, cement grouting has been used in 80% of all shaft excavations. In the Republic of South Africa cement grouting has been used in almost 100% of all the shafts that have been constructed. The installation of grout curtains into permeable water- bearing strata significantly reduces their permeability and increases the rock strength. Grouting has the greatest effect in fractured sandstones, certain well indurated shales, fractured granites, fractured quartzites, and karstic limestones or dolomites. The following principal factors must be considered when assessing the expediency of grouting rock with cement: the geometry of the network of fracture openings, the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the fractured rock, the hydraulic head acting on the water in the rock, and the chemical composition of the ground water. On the basis of the geometry of the fractures and the thickness of each hydrostratigraphic unit, the characteristics of the cement grout are selected. As a rule, the cementing of large fractured zones with high ground water velocities is carried out using inert fillers (sand, mill slag, loam, loess, crushed limestone), special types of cement, setting accelerators, and high cement concentrations in water. Calcium chloride, soda ash, sodium silicate, sodium nitrate, amino alcohols, tin bichloride, trisulphate nitrate, and lumnite are used extensively as the setting accelerators for cement grouts. In the FRG and Poland, special cement injection compounds that embody a mixture of cement and active cement metal salts, water additives and binding substances are being used for the cementing of saturated zones with rapid ground water velocities. These reagents accelerate the rate of structure-forming reactions. In spite of the wide variety of additives used for cement grouts, the effectiveness of the method in large fractures below the water table is either poor or it leads to a very large consumption of cement due to the erosion of the grout through the cracks before it hardens. At the present time, a large number of cement types and brands are being produced by various countries. These variations permit cementing to be employed in a variety of geological conditions. However, both pure cement grout and grouts with fillers constitute unstable systems with a high water loss rate. Therefore during the grouting of finely fractured rock the cement grout's premature loss of a large amount of free water causes its consistency to increase, whereupon the grout solidifies. Consequently, it inadequately penetrates into the fine fractures of the stratum. In addition the high water loss rate in the cement grout causes unreacted cement particles to remain, which greatly reduces the grout hardness and the resulting rock strength characteristics are weakened. As a result, the binding properties of the cement are utilized perhaps up to 60%. The remaining portion is left in the grout as a filler. All these conditions significantly decrease the efficiency of the isolation effort both with respect to strength and cost. In order to expand the cement grouting method, re- search is being conducted to improve the quality of cement grout, to increase its range of application with respect to permeability control, to reduce its water loss rate and to increase its capacity to withstand the erosive and corrosive effects of poor quality ground water. INTRODUCTION The development during 1979 of a relatively small, but high grade (10,000 tonnes uranium at an average grade of 2 per cent), uranium ore body at Nabarlek in the Northern Territory, Australia offered an excellent opportunity to obtain detailed radiation data for an open cut mine operating during the dry season. The ore body (Queensland Mines Limited-1979), which was completely extracted in a period of four and a half months, consisted of a vein type deposit dipping at 30 to 45 degrees and contained a central core of pitchblende in massive and irregular pods, surrounded by lower grade fine grained disseminated pitchblende. Mineralisation extended from the surface to a depth of 72 metres over a length of 230 metres with an average but variable thickness of 1D metres. Ore near the surface had been heavily weathered and complex secondary minerals were formed which had dispersed from the main vein. Mining was carried out with large earth moving equipment. Overburden and weathered surface ore were removed initially with scrapers. At greater depths bulldozers were used to rip and assemble ore and rock at each level, and these were removed by large trucks to the ore and waste rock stockpiles. Where necessary, blasting took place during shift changes each evening. Mining was essentially continuous with two ten hour alternating shifts working for thirteen days out of fourteen. At the completion of mining a relatively small excavation (335m x 185m x 70m) remained, and this will serve as a tailings repository during the milling phase. FIELD MEASUREMENTS The inhalation of radon daughters, arising from the radioactive decay of radon gas is well established (Archer et. al. 1973) as a potential hazard in the uranium mining industry. Control over radon and its daughters to ensure that recommended exposure limits are not exceeded is achieved by providing adequate ventilation, and under normal circumstances natural ventilation from an open pit should be sufficient. However, during the dry season it is not uncommon for stable atmospheric conditions, with little horizontal air movement, to develop - particularly at night - and significant radon daughter concentrations may accumulate. Throughout the entire mining period measurements were therefore made of radon and radon daughter levels at representative locations within the pit and on the ore stockpile as it developed. Initially these measurements were carried out manually, using the Rolle method for radon daughters, (Rolle 1972) and .scintillation cells (Lucas 1964) or a two filter tube for the determination of radon (Thomas 1970). For the latter half of the period however, a continuous recording instrument, developed within the Laboratory was used to provide a detailed record of radon daughter levels within the pit. At the same time, continuous readings of wind speed and direction, and vertical temperature gradient between 10 and 3D metres were recorded on a 30 metre meteorological tower, situated 800 metres from the pit. Radon Emanation Rates It is evident that radon and radon daughter concentrations depend on the grade, or more particularly, on the surface radon emanation rate of the ore which is exposed. Accordingly, as the mine progressed, detailed measurements were made of both of these quantities. The surface emanation rate of radon was determined for each ore bench as it was exposed by placing an extended array of canisters, filled with freshly degassed activated charcoal, face down on the ore for a known time. These canisters, which had previously been calibrated in the Laboratory, adsorb radon with high efficiency, and the total radon adsorbed is measured after retrieval by detecting the gamma rays from the trapped radon daughters (Countess 1977). At the same time, as each canister was placed in position, a measurement of the local ore grade was made for each location. This was achieved with a calibrated sodium iodide scintillation detector, adjusted to detect the 609 keV gamma ray from the isotope 2148i, a decay product of radium. Finally, measurements were made of the radiation field 1 metre above the surface, with a gamma ray survey meter, which was calibrated in the Laboratory. The relationship between the scintillator count rate and ore grade was determined by comparing the scintillator output with the gamma monitor, and relating the latter measurements to ore grade (Thomson and Wilson 1980). It was observed that while emanation rates and ore grades varied widely, the ratio of emanation rate to ore grade was in general fairly stable. A plot of this ratio is presented as a function of depth below the original surface in Figure 1. For most observations the ratio is constant at a value of 80 Bq m-2 s -1 per unit ore grade, where ore grade is expressed as percentage of U308. At the surface however, where the ore was weathered, the ratio was about a factor of three higher, and at two particular depths, where high grade pitchblende was being removed, it was very much lower. This was not unexpected as earlier Laboratory studies of drill core samples from Nabarlek had indicated that the emanation coefficient (the fraction of radon produced within the ore which escapes from the mineral particles) decreases with increasing ore grade.

The Alligator Ridge Mine was discovered in 1976 by a prospector grubstaked by Amselco Exploration Inc. in eastern Nevada 116 km (72 mi.) northwest of Ely in White Pine County. The mine is operated as a 50-50 Joint Venture by BP Gold, the operator, which is a subsidiary of British Petroleum Minerals America and Nerco Inc., a subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light.

This paper describes the use of rock index property testing to obtain rock properties that a.re useful in the design and construction planning of an underground development for civil engineering or mining projects. The index properties discussed include (1) point load; (2) Schmidt hammer hardness; (3) abrasion hardness; and (4) total hardness. The first two index properties correlate to uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus. Discussions are given on the relationship to rock mass properties and the integrated use with semi-empirical, geotechnical design methods. The latter two properties correlate to construction performance parameters and some experience is cited. Examples of data are presented from an index testing program carried out on siltstone, sandstone and limestone rock core samples from a deep borehole drilled in the Paradox Basin of Utah for a nuclear waste repository site investigation.

A new technology for recovery of metals from spent catalysts containing aluminum, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel and vanadium was developed. The catalysts are decomposed in two consecutive pressure leaching steps. Sodium aluminate-sodium hydroxide systems are lixiviants in both leaching steps. Selective extraction of molybdenum and vanadium is achieved in the first leaching step. The leach liquor is processed for separation and recovery of these two metals. The residue from the first leaching step is further processed in a second leaching step where alumina is solubilized. The residue from this operation is a nickel-cobalt concentrate. Alumina is separated from the second stage leach liquor by precipitation; the depleted liquor, a sodium aluminate solution, is recycled to the first and second leaching step. This technology has advantages over other approaches for the recovery of metals from spent catalysts because no solid waste is generated.

Mud is one of the oldest building materials used by man, but it is not only of historic interest. Even today in many parts of the world, particularly lightly forested areas, it is the chief building material. Many authorities believe that at least 30% and perhaps 50% of the world's present population lives in earthen dwellings (Dethier, 1985, Coffman et al., 1990). Not all of these people are members of primitive societies or live in third world countries. European, African, Asian, and both North and South American countries contain a large number of such structures. In the United States, the American West, and particularly the Southwest, is known for this type of construction. Some of the earliest remains of adobe structures are those discovered in the ruins of Neolithic farming villages in Mesopo¬tamia dating as far back as 7000 BC (Steen, 1972). The word adobe has its roots in Egyptian hieroglyphs denoting brick and evolved to its present form through Arabic and Spanish (Lumpkins, 1977). The Spanish conquest of the New World spread the use of wooden molds to produce a standard adobe brick. Today, the word adobe is used to describe various earth building materials and techniques, usually referring to sun-dried adobe brick now used in the United States, but is also applied to puddled adobe structures, mud-plastered logs or branches (Jacal or waddle-and-daub), pressed-earth blocks, and rammed-earth walls or pisé (Smith and Austin, 1989, Ferm, 1985). Modern mud construction is used in many countries in various parts of the world. In the United States, the states from Texas to California are perhaps best known for this type of construction. Of these states, New Mexico has the dominant reputation for adobe use. Indeed, in New Mexico the Santa Fe style (Fig. 1) has made adobe not only acceptable, but preferred. RAW MATERIALS Adobe soil used by present day adobe producers, and probably past adobe producers as well, is principally sandy loam (50% clay and silt), although clayey silts are used in some areas (Coffman et al., 1990). In New Mexico, the best adobe soils are those developed on stream deposits, particularly Holocene (Recent) terrace deposits and older, loosely compacted geologic formations, such as the Santa Fe Group (Tertiary) located in the Rio Grande Valley. Some modern adobe producers use a mixture of materials from the screened fines of aggregate operations and mud from irrigation ditches in the river valleys combined with varying amounts of sand to produce the proper blend. Mineralogy Bulk Mineralogy: X-ray diffraction analyses of whole rock samples from many parts of the world where adobe is the dominant construction material show the major constituents of adobe are quartz and feldspar, with lesser amounts (in order of abundance) of calcite, clay minerals, and gypsum (Coffman et al., 1990). Adobes from and climates contain considerable calcite; in some cases calcite is second only to quartz in volume. Quartz, feldspar, most of the clay minerals, and some calcite commonly are derived from the mechanical/chemical breakdown of older rocks units. Some of the clay minerals, much of the calcite and perhaps all of the gypsum are precipitated from evaporating water. Clay Mineralogy: Clay-size minerals consist dominantly of clay minerals, but nearly clay-size fractions contain minor amounts of quartz and calcite, and occasionally other nonclay minerals. In earth construction materials from New Mexico, clay-size particles are the most compositionally variable in commercial adobe soils. However, the clay mineral groups in this size fraction consist of about equal parts of expandable clay minerals (smectite and mixed¬layer illite/smectite or I/S) and non-expandable clay minerals (ka¬olinite, illite, and chlorite), with minor quartz, calcite, and feldspar (Smith and Austin, 1989, Austin, 1990). In the and American Southwest, smectite is commonly calcium-rich and the I/S is dis¬organized and randomly interstratified. In a study of 42 New Mex¬ican commercial adobe soils, only two contained chlorite, and vermiculite, sepiolite, and palygorskite were not found. Soils in temperate climates, as are found in the midwestern and northeastern United States, contain an abundance of illite (Potter et al., 1975). The clay minerals in earthen structures of that region and in Europe commonly contain illite with less amounts of kaolinite, smectite, I/S, chlorite, and vermiculite. In contrast, the clay-size fractions of soils of humid tropical areas are typically acid, with kaolinite as the dominant clay mineral and lesser amounts of I/S, illite, smectite, and others (Chamley, 1989).

INTRODUCTION Approximately six years ago the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed a data acquisition system (DAS) specifically designed for measuring radon levels and other environmental parameters during studies of means to control radiation hazards in underground uranium mines. The DAS system records data in machine readable form using a paper tape punch, which represented the state-of-the-art at that time for a moderate cost output device. However, the use of paper tape as a recording medium for field studies is somewhat unwieldy. Reducing the raw data required either that the tape be shipped to a computer center equipped with a high-speed paper tape reader or that the tape be transmitted at low speed over the telephone lines to a remote computer. Transmitting, at ten characters per second, the data from a 10-channel DAS taking Four readings per hour would require about 30 minutes For each 24-hour day's data. Telephone lines from remote mine sites are often of marginal quality and data errors can be introduced during transmission. Paper tape punches are also prone to occasional punching errors. Both problems make it necessary to carefully check for and correct data errors, a process which is possible because each DAS produces an independent printed data record, but the error checking and correction process can be quite laborious. Aware of recent advances in microcomputer technology which have brought the price of a personal computer down to about the cost of a paper tape punch 5-10 years ago, the Bureau decided to explore the feasibility of using a low-cost personal computer in the field to process DAS data in real time. On behalf of the Bureau, Arthur D. Little, Inc., developed a simple interface circuit which permits an Apple II computer to accept data from one or two DAS units as it is being transmitted to the paper tape punches. Computer software converts each measurement to appropriate engineering units, e.g., radon concentration, Working Levels, air velocity, temperature, or barometric pressure. The computer also calculates 1-hour and 8-hour running averages of all converted data and prints those results as soon as they are obtained on a line printer located at the test site for immediate inspection. After development, the system was used continuously and successfully for a 5-month period at a Utah uranium mine. DAS DESIGN AND MODIFICATION Each of the two USBM data acquisition systems used in this work consists of two separate modules. A multiplexer module located below ground near the measurement transducers acquires signals from each of nine tranducers. Six input channels were devoted to measurements of radon or Working Level. The outputs of those transducers, photomultiplier tubes or G-M tubes, respectively, are digital pulse trains which are accepted directly by the mutliplexer. Three channels were used for environmental parameters--air velocity, temperature, and/or barometric pressure. Each of the environmental tranducers is fitted with dedicated linearizing and voltage-to-frequency conversion circuitry so that the outputs to the multiplexer are also pulse trains having frequencies of one tenth of the value of the measured parameter expressed in the appropriate engineering units. A 100-Hz reference signal was input into the tenth channel for use in monitoring system integrity and performance. All ten pulse trains are then timeseries multiplexed into a signal line for transmission to the above-ground data acquisition module. Above ground, the composite signal is de-multiplexed into ten separate lines, each of which is connected to a digital counter which converts the pulse train to a numerical value. The acquisition of each set of readings is initiated by an adjustable "scan cycle comparator" timer. The acquisition process proceeds in three phases. First, radon and Working Level channels are counted for an extended period of time, typically 5-10 minutes depending on activity, because of the low pulse rates involved. Then the other four channels are counted for ten seconds, and finally, all ten readings, along with the Julian day and time of day are output serially onto paper tape and printed on a strip printer. When the scan cycle comparator reaches its preset time (15-minute cycle times were used in this work), it resets itself, initiates another readout cycle, and begins timing again. The only modification made to the data acquisition systems used in this work was to disconnect the scan cycle comparator in one unit, which became the "slave" and bring in the scan cycle comparator signal from the other unit, the "master", to initiate data acquisition cycles in the slave. Synchronizing the two data acquisitions in this fashion and using two slightly different radon counting times insured that the two systems never attempted to output data to the Apple II at the same time. THE APPLE II COMPUTER The Apple II computer used in this work was equipped with 48 KBytes of semiconductor random access memory (RAM), two floppy diskette drives, a Centronics Model 730 impact matrix printer and a modulator for driving an ordinary color television as a video display device. Introduction Extensive testing in the past ten years has shown that where a uniform natural gamma background is present in the strata bordering a seam, the thickness of the boundary coal left in place after mining can be determined by measuring the attenuation of that radiation (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989). Measurements made by the authors in underground mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky and by others in Wyoming and New Mexico have shown the presence of such a gamma background (Nelson. 1989). Natural gamma coal-thickness sensors of several configurations have been tested in mines owned and operated by the Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) in Pennsylvania and West Virginia (Nelson and Bessinger, 1988). This paper describes the installation of a natural gamma coal-thickness sensor on an operating continuous miner. Previous tests had shown that the NGB-1000 coal-thickness sensor manufactured by American Mining Electronics, Inc., of Huntsville. AL, is an accurate, mine-worthy instrument. This large gamma detector consists of a sensing head and a control panel. The sensing head contains thallium-doped, sodium iodide scintillating crystal, which is coupled to a photomultiplier tube. The control panel contains the electronic components required for calibration, count conversion and display to the operator. Methods Conditions at a Consol mine in northern West Virginia require that 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in.) of coal be left at the roof boundary of continuous miner development sections. This roof coal is required because the shale of the immediate roof is friable and unstable. In the past, operators have used a dirt band that is usually visible near the top of the seam as a guide in maintaining the proper cutting horizon. However, this is not always reliable. Earlier observation showed that the actual thickness of the coal left on the roof varied widely; further, it was noted that occasional, accidental excursions into the immediate roof required supplementary roof control measures, such as installation of planks or center bolts. Thus, it was concluded that operators needed a better source of guidance for control of the cutting horizon, and a roof-coal thickness sensor was scheduled for installation. The NGB-1000 sensor was installed on a Joy 12CM10 continuous miner in June 1988. The sensing head was mounted on the cutter boom of the miner, and the control panel was mounted in the operator's cab. Power for the sensor was initially derived from an intrinsically safe battery power supply. Initial measurements with the sensor showed that the calibration was the same as that used in earlier tests at two other mines, indicating the uniformity of the natural gamma background above the Pittsburgh seam. Operating personnel were initially skeptical of the instrument's accuracy, and were hesitant to use its readings as a guide in maintaining a proper cutting horizon. Because gamma attenuation, the instrument's operating principle, is somewhat abstract, attempts to demonstrate the instrument's accuracy by explaining that principle were generally ineffective. It was found, however, that an operator could usually be convinced of the usefulness of the instrument by placing a large piece of coal of fairly uniform thickness over the instrument's sensing head and allowing the operator to see that the instrument reading increased by an amount very near his estimate of the thickness of the piece. The mine was provided with seven battery power supplies and a charging station. The charging station was kept in the lampman's office, and the mechanic on each shift was instructed that he was responsible for two battery power supplies each day: a freshly charged one to be taken in at the beginning of his shift and a depleted one to be brought out at the end. This system worked well for a few weeks, but eventually some battery power supplies were left in use so long that their batteries were discharged too deeply to allow recharging. In addition, transport and recharging of the batteries represented an additional task for the mechanics, who were already very busy. Consequently, a request was filed with MSHA to allow the sensor to be powered through intrinsic safety barriers by an electronic power supply connected to machine power. The permit was granted, and the sensor was connected to machine power. After the sensor was connected to machine power, the only operating problem experienced was occasional failure of cables. A supply of the required cables was made and delivered to the mine so damaged cables could be quickly replaced. Much of the cable damage could be eliminated by slight modifications to the miner during a rebuild, so that cables could be installed in more protected locations. After the sensor had been in operation for about two months, a survey was made to determine its effect on continuous miner operations. In previous research, coal thickness measurements made in 88 locations by the natural gamma method were compared to measurements made in the same locations by observing drill cuttings and by inspections of drill holes with a borescope. That research showed that the gamma method is at least as accurate as the other two methods (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989) and is also much easier to use. The object of the survey described here was not to assess the accuracy of the natural gamma measurements. but rather to determine the effectiveness of the sensor output as a guide for the operator in maintaining control of the cutting horizon. Maintenance of a constant load setting throughout longwall support units and selection of the proper initial bearing capacity depending on the type of roof strata are the basic factors that ensure good performance of roof support in a longwall. These requirements can only be met by hydraulic support. The greatest advantage of hydraulic support is achieved when uniform pressure is imposed on the roof throughout the length of the longwall. Such support, however, is provided only if each of the support units acts with the same force against the roof, i.e., has the same setting load. In such cases, the roof behaves like a uniform plate without bending and shearing stresses, thereby ensuring an undisturbed structure. Without a positive set value system, achieving an equal setting load for all units of the longwall support is impossible. Due to alterations of the feed line pressure of support units as well as some reasons related to man's psychology, operators extend the height at different setting loads. This produces nonuniform roof stress, and disturbs the structure. Consequently, the roof usually cracks. The author has developed a positive set value system, which is described in this Technical Note. Selection of the setting load Two pressure values in the feed lines are usually applied in longwall hydraulic systems. Lightweight support is fed by 25 MPa (250 bar) liquid, while heavy duty units receive a nominal pressure of 31.5 MPa (315 bar). Such pressure is required not only for the props but also to power the adjust¬ment jacks and the advancing ram. If the feed pressure is too low, there will be difficulty in shifting the unit despite the inversion system of the advancing rams. On the other hand, for many roof types, the feed pressure often appears to be too high when applied as the setting load pressure. An excessive setting load acts too strongly against the roof, crushing weak strata close to the roof. The author has recognized a case where an excessive setting load destroyed not only the nearby roof strata but also the strata above a 2-m (6.6-ft) sandstone layer. In addition, an excessive setting load relieves the side¬walls, increasing the resistance when using cutting machines. As a result, the yield of coarse coal is diminished, and increased fines dominate in the final product, lowering its economic value. As indicated, selection of the proper setting load, depend¬ing on the mining and geological conditions of the extracted seam, is extremely important. In some mines, measures applied to prevent disturbances include reduction of the feed line pressure by adjusting the feed pump valve. The disadvantage accompanying reduced feed line pressure is more difficult operation in advancing the ram. Due to the reduced feed line pressure, the force of the advancing ram is much lower than the designed value. Other designs suggest using a third feed line. However, installation of supplementary valves on the support units is required, a time-consuming and expensive procedure. The disadvantages of the powered supports are eliminated by a system designed by the author. So far, such a method of setting load control has not been used in any type of support. Setting load control unit The designed positive valve set for prop loading and the setting load control correspond to existing control systems for hydraulic powered support. The layout of the unit connected to the hydraulic prop control is presented in Fig. 1. The unit is marked LIDS. It incorporates three valves that may operate separately or connected. Valve A automatically opens and closes with liquid flow in the prop feed circuit. The valve is opened when the canopy touches the roof and closed when the support unit is withdrawn. Valve B serves as the setting load control. Valve C automatically opens and closes the flow in the line connecting the under-piston space of E to the prop F with the separator G. The valve block of each support prop is marked BZ. The UDS unit is connected by the hydraulic lines to the F prop control circuit. A valve is connected by H to pressure line J and by K to the G separator. In the UDS-3 version, line L is connected to M, linking the over-piston space of F prop with the G separator. Valve B is linked with valve A by a connector; it is also connected to the under-piston space E of prop F by line P. Valve C is fixed between lines K and P, connecting space E of prop F with the separator G. When setting the support, the liquid flows from line J through separator G, the BZ valve, and valve C to the space E of prop F. When reaching the roof with the canopy, valve A is opened and C closes. In this way it is impossible for the operator to cause the liquid pressure in space E of prop F to reach the level of line J. The prop pressure is set by valve B of the UDS unit. When withdrawing the support, valve C is automatically opened and A closed. Three UDS units have been fabricated and are designated

The lining of a mine shaft is one of the most important considerations in the planning and operation of an underground mine. Generally, the function of a shaft lining is to preserve the shaft opening in a manner compatible with the expected mine life and -the other shaft operations. Where shafts are the only means of surface access in a mine, they also serve a critical function for the safety of the entire underground operation. Routine repairs and maintenance work on the shaft linings are only possible in stable strata with only minor interruptions to the shaft operations.

INTRODUCTION Main mine fan installations at underground coal mines must be designed to comply with the requirements outlined in 30 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Part 75. However, very little emphasis is typically placed on the aerodynamic optimization of shaft collar designs, ductwork configurations, and the selection of a fan isolation, or "closing door," system. Field testing has shown that poorly designed systems may produce large pressure losses between the shaft and fan inlet, as well as air turbulence problems which adversely impact fan efficiency and sometimes fan structural integrity. This paper analyzes each component of a surface exhaust fan system for an underground coal mine: • The shaft collar arrangement, • The 45 or 90-degree turning duct that isolates the fan motor from the return airstream, • Alternative ductwork arrangements for parallel fan installations, • The self-closing doors or dampers that are required for multiple fans, and • Horizontal and vertical evas6 arrangements on the discharge side of the fan. While discussion is limited to axial fan installations at shaft mines, most of the recommendations would also apply to centrifugal fan installations and to main mine fans for drift mines. FEDERAL REGULATIONS The mandatory safety standards for underground coal mines that apply to the installation of main mine fans are listed in 30 CFR Part 75.310. Stipulations which impact the design of the fan sys- tem arrangement are contained in paragraphs (a)(l), (a)(5), (a)(6),(d), and (1) of 75.31 0: • Each main mine fan shall be installed on the surface in an incombustible housing; • Each main mine fan shall be protected by weak walls or explosion doors in direct line with possible explosive forces; • Explosion doors or weak walls shall have a cross-sectional area at least equal to the area of the return air shaft or drift opening through which the pressure from an underground explosion would be relieved; • Each main mine fan shall be offset by at least 4.57 m (15 feet) from the nearest side of the mine or shaft opening; • Automatic closing doors shall be provided to prevent possible air reversals through the fans in mines ventilated by multiple main mine fans. The installation of main mine fans underground is prohibited by 30 CFR Part 75.310, (a)(l). Providing explosion doors or weak walls in line with a possible underground explosion and offsetting the fan 4.57 m (1 5 feet) from the edge of the shaft preclude the installation of the fan directly over the shaft. In addition, 30 CFR Part 75.507-1 specifies that all electrical equipment used in return air courses be permissible, which requires locating the fan motor outside of the airstream exhausted through the fan. To comply with the Part 75.310 regulations, explosion doors are typically located directly over the shaft as part of the shaft cover or 'bonnet." A sufficiently long section of ductwork placed between the shaft enclosure and fan, equipped with a 45 or 90- degree turn, enables the fan to be offset at least 4.57 m (1 5 feet) from the shaft and the motor to be isolated from the airstream. The need for the turn in the ductwork can be eliminated by driving the fan from the discharge side, instead of from the inlet side, and providing for a 90-degree bend in the evas6. For multiple main mine fan systems, self-closing doors can be located on the inlet or discharge side of the fan. FAN SYSTEM COMPONENTS A poorly designed exhaust fan arrangement will produce turbulent conditions at the fan inlet and significant pressure losses between the shaft and fan. Field tests have shown that pressure losses through inlet ductwork at some installations may constitute as much as 30 percent of the total mine head. Unfavorable flow conditions may cause a change in the operating point on the fan performance curve, resulting in reduced fan efficiency and pres- sure generation capability. In some instances, poor airflow distribution through the fan may create mechanical stresses that lead to fan blade or fan housing fatigue failures. The objective in designing an air duct arrangement for a fan system is to provide a low cost duct that will move the air from the shaft to the fan in a uniform air distribution and with minimum energy requirements. The optimum solution is a compromise between technical and economic factors. Aerodynamic design considerations for the shaft collar and cover, fan inlet ductwork for both single and parallel fans, self-closing doors, and evas6 are discussed in the sections below. Shaft Collar/Cover To prevent excessive turbulence and non-uniform air distribution through the fan, a smooth transition for the change in direction of airflow at the top of the shaft must be provided. However, the concrete lining of the shaft is abruptly terminated at the surface at many coal mine installations (see Figure I), creating a sharp 90-degree bend. Imported products and materials have been in the news over the last several years in a wide variety of industries. Certainly the mining and industrial minerals industry has not been exempt from this. Cement imports have received considerable attention in the press and a number of written articles. We are also seeing imported aggregates particularly along the gulf coast and east coast of the United states. We are now hearing increasing talk of bringing high brightness calcium carbonate from offshore sources into the U.s. domestic markets. This paper takes a look at the location of these sources, factors affecting their acceptance by U.S. industry and presents a general cost comparison of offshore and domestic calcium carbonate. In addition, the market response of U.S. suppliers and the impact of imports is also discussed.

INTRODUCTION In this chapter, the term "down-the-hole drill" (DTH drill) is used as a generic name that encompasses the various trade names and other references such as "downhole drill," "in-the-hole drill," etc. This chapter is limited to a description of DTH drills used in stoping large underground ore bodies. DTH drills differ from conventional drills by virtue of the placement of the drill in the drill string. The DTH drill follows immediately behind the bit into the hole, rather than remaining on the feed as with ordinary drifters. Thus, no energy is dissipated through the steel or couplings, and the penetration rate is nearly constant, regardless of the depth of the hole. Since the drill must operate on compressed air and tolerates only small amounts of water, cuttings are flushed either by air with water-mist injection or by standard mine air with a dust collector at the collar. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT Mine managers have long known the economies enjoyed by quarry and open-pit operators in producing large quantities of ore. The savings are due primarily to the availability of massive equipment, capable of drilling large blastholes to reduce the amount of drilling, increase the fragmentation, reduce secondary blasting, and im¬prove the flow of the product. In an attempt to reduce underground mining costs, various methods are used for long-hole drilling, includ¬ing standard pneumatic percussion drifters and diamond drills. These systems have their shortcomings; percus¬sion drills are limited to small hole sizes and they ex¬perience excessive deviation and significant loss of energy with increased depth. The diamond drills provide deeper and straighter holes, but only at high cost. Both systems suffer from high noise levels, low penetration rates, and poor explosives distribution, among other problems. When the mining companies approached the drill manufacturers for a compact and portable large-hole jumbo for underground use, they specified not more than 1 % deviation on 60 m (200 ft) of vertical hole and a penetration rate of 15 m/h (50 fph). On Dec. 23, 1960, a test unit was placed in service in Montana and met the performance criteria. Though lacking the so¬phisticated features available today, the economies of surface blasting were brought underground. Unfortunately, the first system did not gain immedi¬ate acceptance in the industry. Among the factors con¬tributing to its demise were resistance to change, the need to alter development methods for the ore bodies, and a lack of flexibility in moving the rig from setup to setup and from level to level. In 1972, the mining industry again challenged the drill manufacturers to provide a workable jumbo that would combine compactness, ease of maintenance, relia¬bility, and efficiency, all on a self-propelled chassis. The manufacturers responded by providing improved jumbos, which have been accepted with enthusiasm throughout the mining industry. Today's DTH jumbos are capable of drilling from 100 to 200 mm (4 to 8 in.) diam holes that can be reamed to even larger diameters. The holes can be drilled to depths of 150 m (500 ft), depending upon ground conditions and the capability of the jumbo to retrieve the steel and drill. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical DTH jumbo. APPLICATIONS The uses to which DTH drill jumbos have been put are quite numerous, with new uses being found regularly. For convenience, these uses may be classified as primary blastholes and nonblasting holes. Primary Blastholes The original purpose for the development of the DTH jumbo was for drilling primary blastholes that could be mined by open-stope methods. Prior to the advent of the DTH jumbo, extensive development was required before production drilling could begin. Sub¬levels were required to allow access for column-and-arm stopers or ring/fan jumbos, to the extent necessary based on the effective penetration of the chosen machine. With the DTH jumbo, the mine engineer is able to reduce preproduction time and development costs. How¬ever, the most significant saving results from an im¬proved cost per ton of broken ore in the production phase. To utilize a DTH system, only a top heading and drawpoints are necessary. The top heading can be the width of the ore body with a 3.7-m (12-ft) back. A drop-raise pattern is drilled and shot to begin the stoping operation, providing a free face for subsequent blasting. A typical layout is illustrated in Fig. 2. The advantages of this system include: 1) Drilling and blasting are independent operations, and blasting can be performed at a rate congruous with the mine's ton-per-day capacity. 2) The development layout is simplified. 3) Good explosive distribution is achieved, provid¬ing more uniform fragmentation. 4) Environmental conditions for operators are im¬proved, including improved safety with all work directed downward (not overhead), lower noise levels, little fog, and a reduced dust count. 5) Improved production per manshift. 6) Simplified and easier operator work cycles. 7) Reduced cost per ton of product. 8) Fewer holes lost due to ground shifts. Nonblasting Holes With the introduction of the compact DTH jumbos, other practical uses became apparent, including the drilling of: 1) Holes for sand fill, from level to level and from level to stope. 2) Drain and dewatering holes. 3) Power and communications cable holes.

Nevada Goldfields' Aurora Mine consists of a 270 mtpd (300 tpd) precious metals mining and milling facility located 28 miles southwest of Hawthorne, Mineral County, Nevada and lies within five kilometers of the Nevada-California border. (Figure 1) Ore production presently is derived 85% from an open pit source with the balance from underground. The Aurora Mill is a compact conventional cyanide plant utilizing a carbon-in-leach extraction process followed by stripping of loaded carbon and electrowinning at Nevada Goldfields Kingston Mine, located near Austin, Nevada. Production commenced in December 1987 and annual gold production is currently 20,000 troy ounces of gold and 22,000 troy ounces of silver per annum, produced at an average cash cost of $178 per ounce of gold. Tailings handling at, Aurora was originally accomplished using a belt filter press producing a solid cake that was then transported to a final storage area. Although overall operating costs at the mine were' in the lower percentile of producing gold mines, the tailings handling portion of the operating costs were inordinately high.
