Numerous techniques for treating, controlling, and preventing acid rock drainage have been applied at the Summitville Mine Superfund Site. Challenging aspects of the remote mine site include the wide-spread occurrence of acid-generating soils and rocks, extensive surface and underground mine workings, and a cold and wet climate. Water treatment was an immediate necessity when the Government took control of the abandoned site in December of 1992. Subsequent reclamation activities have emphasized prevention and control of ARD to minimize future water treatment requirements. A combination of conventional, innovative, and experimental methods are being applied to successfully mitigate ARD at Summitville.

The Archean ores of Western Australia are in total the largest producers of gold in Australia. In addition to numerous small and medium sized deposits, the province also contains the giant Kalgoorlie Golden Mile deposits. A variety of different gold ore mineralogical associations has lead to the development of a number of different processing routes for both refractory and non-refractory ore types. Intense weathering and lateritization of Archean greenstones in the semi-arid Yilgarn region have resulted in the development of a deeply oxidized profile (60-100m) above most sulphide orebodies. Residual and re-deposited supergene gold within iron oxide/silica gangue of this zone responds well to CIP, CIL, heap and vat leaching techniques. Although gold is easily liberated in principal from oxidized gangue, in practice recoveries are sometimes affected by iron oxide coatings on gold grains, and by clay minerals which can interfere with plant performance. Refractory ore types in the Eastern Goldfields fall into three main categories - pyritic, arsenopyritic and telluride-bearing. Pyritic ores may be either free milling or require roasting. The difference appears to depend largely on whether gold occurs along grain boundaries or fractures, which can be liberated by grinding, or whether gold occurs as inclusions within pyrite grains and therefore cannot be satisfactorily liberated by grinding. Arsenopyrite bearing ores are not well understood and are complicated by what appears to be a variable degree of gold solid solution, in addition to included gold. Gold occurring in complex gold-silver telluride assemblages has traditionally been recovered by roasting in the Eastern Goldfields.

In New Caledonia, ultramafic formations occur on 7,000 square kilometers. Weathering of peridotites leads to profiles of alteration and nickel concentrations. Complete profiles are composed of two main groups of horizons: 1. Limonitic, mainly composed of iron hydroxides 2. Saprolitic, partly composed of magnesium and iron silicates Shape and mineralogical composition of saprolitic horizons are chiefly affected by the nature of the bedrock: types of peridotite and their degrees of serpentinization. On the other hand, morphology (plateau, terraces, slopes, piedmont) is an important factor. Ore-bodies are inside saprolites; their outlines are determined by the grade of nickel and tonnage economically mineable. Information about geology, morphology, geochemistry, and mineralogy are given in this paper.

INTRODUCTION Pyrite responds to the flotation reagents normally used in sulfide flotation systems. For example, it is well known that xanthates are good collectors for pyrite, and cyanide, sulfide and hydroxides are depressants. The particular response of pyrite to these and other reagents is used to advantage in several areas. By careful control of depressant and collector additions, pyrite can be separated from other sulfides by flotation. This is of obvious importance in base metal sulfide flotation where pyrite depression is often required to produce a marketable grade concentrate. Flotation of pyrite has long been employed in gold ore processing, and it appears that pyrite flotation from coal may become important in the future (1). It is probably a direct consequence of this relative ease of separation, plus the low economic value of pyrite, that detailed investigations on the chemistry of its flotation and depression are relatively limited. Gaudin (2,3,4) and others, in the mid-1950's published data on the flotation of pyrite, but detailed or consistent mechanisms were lacking. In 1955, Sutherland and Wark's book (5) was published, in which a large amount of empirical information, especially earlier work of Wark and Cox, was presented. More recently, in 1968, significant contributions have been made by Fuerstenau et al. (6,7) and Majima and Takeda (El. These papers introduced electrochemical explanations of the effects observed with xanthate and cyanide ions.

"Construction activities account for a large share of the global Greenhouse Gas emission. In the past 10 years, project decision-makers and researchers have been paying more attention to the carbon emission of tunnel projects. In this paper we study the carbon emission calculation in shield tunneling. The objective of this paper is to: (1) analyze the complex variables which affect the total emission of shield tunneling; (2) develop and illustrate a new data-mining-based method to estimate the carbon emission in the construction phase; (3) assess the emission prediction reliability of a data-mining-based method—the Randomforst model, with R programming language. This study is based on a large-diameter shield tunnel built in Shanghai, China, and shows that a reliable predictive performance can be achieved with this new data-mining-based method. INTRODUCTION Climate change caused by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission has been a hot topic in recent 20 years. Both governments and non-government-organizations are trying its best to control the climate change. Since the 1990s, the general consensus is that carbon emission reduction and carbon sinking (the work of capturing the emitted carbon) are two ways of mitigating the global warming effect, with the former being more exercisable. The challenge posed by global warming also motivates the project decision-makers to take measures to reduce the GHG emission. The 5th Assessment & Report on Climate Change (published by IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) suggests that building industry contributes to 5% of the total direct emission. The building industry has shown more awareness of the impact of GHG emissions with construction activities. Shield tunnels act as an important component of the infrastructure system, and have been the dominant way of utilizing the underground space, as well as a competitive alternative to passageway underneath rivers. To study the environmental effects of shield tunneling, there is a need to quantify the carbon emission of shield tunnel construction."

When I reached Warren after the "de luxe" South American expedition I had little idea what was in store for me. From the large check Thayer had handed me just before I left New York I was pretty sure the future would be good, and that before long it would involve Anaconda. Evidently, Mr. Thayer had left it to Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway to work out the details The next morning Greenway asked me to come to his office and told me that he and Dr. Ricketts had discussed the question and that Anaconda would make me an offer I could not refuse. They proposed to pay me almost $1000 a month, more than twice my current salary. They had agreed that I should stay with Calumet and Arizona for the rest of the year to help with Bisbee development and anything I could to assist with the New Cornelia plans and construction Of course I could not turn down such a flattering offer, as I had about reached the limit of advancement with a much smaller company in anything save a high executive job, and it would be a long time before I could be ready to change from exploration and geology to operating. Greenway and I agreed that I would stay with him for the remaining eight months of 1916 without any particular title but helping in any way I thought would be most useful. Bisbee and Ajo Study It turned out to be a busy half year, in addition to many good times with my Bisbee friends. The Uplift Club did not meet as regularly as in earlier years, but Mason Ross, Jim Lewis, Bill Gohring, Roy Mitchell, Hubert d'Autremont, Arthur Notman, and I did have many "bull sessions" and poker games. The mineral industries have a continuing need for market forecasting and analysis for a variety of purposes, among which are organization and control of the sales effort, financial and corporate planning, and evaluation of the anticipated revenue from investment in proposed projects. For anything beyond the simplest extrapolation, some kind of economic reasoning or analysis is called for, which may or may not be incorporated into a formal or quantitative model. The principles described here apply to most of the commercially significant minerals and metals. The examples are drawn largely from the copper market, as it is the one with which I have the most practical experience. Practical forecasting is the process of analysis and synthesis from three categories of knowledge: facts and statistics, theory, and practical knowledge and informed opinion. Although many attempts have been made to build forecasts on only one of these three pillars, none has been successful as an operating procedure because of the lack of balance. There are no facts about the future-only about the present and the past. Facts can illuminate the future, but the future can be described only in terms of probability or more or less likely states of affairs-not as a continuous extension of the past and present. Likewise, theory, although useful as an organizing discipline and for providing a methodology of analysis, is inadequate for the complexities of reality. This is especially so when there is feedback between plans and forecasts to produce a new outcome and when there are significant elements of unpredictable free will, such as presidential jawboning or foreign policy considerations. Such elements are difficult to accommodate in neat theories, although they must certainly be reflected in the forecasts. Pure opinion frequently suffers from both a lack of-disciplined reasoning and the presence of biases or self-interest. While the future is unknown, it tends to cast its shadow before it; hence, forecasting is the art and science of positioning oneself so that the shadow becomes visible to the forecaster.

SURFACE SUBSIDENCE IN MINING The consequences of subsidence are becoming progressively more serious as the consumption of an ever- increasing quantity of minerals conflicts with the needs of an expanding population for surface land area. The inevitable result will be an increase in the amount of land area on which undermining is restricted because surface subsidence must be prevented. Designation of land areas that may be undermined, provided that subsidence is controlled and kept within specified limits, also will increase. The decisions as to which land is to be used for urban, agricultural, or other purposes clearly involve considerations that go far beyond the scope of mining technology. Under the authority assigned to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) by the Organic Act (May 16, 1910) and its succeeding amendments and pursuant regulations (30 U.S.C. 1-1 1 ), the Bureau conducts scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and its related problems. Subsidence-control demonstrations that have been conducted under this authority include projects in Wyoming, West Virginia, Illinois, and the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The problenls for technology arc to devise methods for extracting minerals with controlled subsidence in varying geologic settings and for calculating or predicting the amount, extent, and characteristics of the subsidence that accompanies the extraction of our principal minerals mined by high-tonnage methods so that logical choices can be made from the possible alternative approaches. Where underground minerals and fuels are mined and removed, the voids that are created underground generate strong imbalanced stresses in the surrounding and overlying rock strata. The resulting readjustments in the rock masses may cause subsidence of the ground surface. Subsidence implies vertical collapse, because the most conspicuous component of movement is downward. However, the downward component is accompanied by differential horizontal strains that may be more damaging to man-made surface structure.; than the more apparent vertical displacements. SUBSIDENCE CONTROL The most widespread method of alleviating potential subsidence problems in undermined areas has been to backfill mine voids with mine refuse or some other in- expensive material that provides lateral support to the remaining mine pillars and vertical support to the mine roof and overburden. Most USBM backfilling work has been conducted jointly with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources in the anthracite region of northeastern Pennsylvania. These joint projects were conducted under the authority of the Anthracite Mine Drainage Control Act of July 15, 1955 (Public Law 84-162, as amended), and the Appalachian Regional Development Act of 1965 (Public Law 89-4. as amended). In addition to the Appalachian and mine-drainage projects, the Bureau has either conducted or participated in demonstration projects to develop the "pumped- slurry" method of backfilling mine voids. Three of these projects were conducted in Rock Springs, WY. The first was a field test of the pumped-slurry technique, conducted in 1970 under the combined participation of the City of Rock Springs, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Dowell Div. of the Dow Chemical Co., and USBM (Candeub, Fleissig, 1971). The objective was to demonstrate that a large quantity of sand could be hydraulically injected under pressure through a single borehole, and that filling of the mine voids would be essentially complete. In the earlier "blind-flushing" methods, involving sluicing material through boreholes by gravity, quantities per injection hole ranged from 15 to 765 m3 (20 to 1000 cu yd), and the mine voids were only partially filled. In the first test of the pumped-slurry method, approximately 14 900 m (19,500 cu yd) of sand were injected success- fully through a single borehole. Subsequent information obtained through 43 monitoring boreholes indicated that mine voids below 11 330 m2 (2.8 acres) had been filled. As a result of the successful initial test of the pumped-slurry process, USBM conducted additional backfilling demonstration projects using the new technique. The first full-scale demonstration was carried out in the Green Ridge section of Scranton, PA, between 1972 and 1974. This project proved the feasibility of using the new hydraulic-injection technique to back- fill dry mine voids, as well as flooded voids, and it demonstrated that crushed anthracite refuse could be used as easily as sand in the process. Stabilization was pro- vided for about 202 300 m2 (50 acres) of Scranton, having a population of approximately 1000. Additional demonstration projects at Rock Springs, WY, between 1973 and 1975, resulted in the stabilization of about 364 200 m2 (90 acres). The work was necessary to preserve the physical and economic well- being of the city, because there have been numerous occurrences of subsidence during recent years. A demonstration project completed in 1976 in Rock Springs brought the total stabilized area in that city to 647 500 m2 (160 acres). At a cost of about $3,000,000, a population estimated at 7000 persons and property values exceeding $18,000,000 were protected. Presently. USBM is participating in subsidence- control projects involving backfilling in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and West Virginia. Eleven demonstration projects were in progress by USBM in 1977-eight in the Pennsylvania anthracite region and three in bituminous areas of West Virginia (one) and Illinois (two). The estimated total property value is over $100,500,000, and the total cost of the projects is expected to be nearly $20,000,000. The demonstration projects are designed to adapt the pumped-slurry technique to a variety of subsurface conditions, to increase efficiency, and to reduce costs.

"Top-down wall construction was selected to excavate the tunnel portal headwall areas of the ORB East End Crossing tunnel. Benefits included an expedited construction schedule realized by staging excavation and rock support with development of temporary construction access roads. Rock mass properties, proximity to right-of-way lines, and blasting impacts were considered to design suitable lift heights, intermediate bench locations, and permanent ground support systems to provide supported permanent excavations. Carbonate rock formations contained adverse subsurface geotechnical features including solution cavities, clay seams, weathered joints, pinnacled rock, and boulders, which were addressed by flexibility in design. The resulting over-break conditions and long-term water infiltration issues required economic design solutions. This paper discusses the unique considerations required during design of top-down tunnel portal headwalls excavated in carbonate rock formations including temporary excavation and permanent ground support systems which provided flexibility for unforeseen over-break, minimized construction delays, and provided long-term stability. PROJECT BACKGROUND The East End Crossing is an approximate 8-mile highway connection of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges East End Crossing (ORBEE) project. Currently under construction, this connection will link State Road 265 in Indiana with the Gene Snyder Freeway in Kentucky to form an outer loop bypassing the Louisville-Southern Indiana metropolitan area. This highway project features a 2,510-foot long, three-span cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River, and a 1,680-foot long tunnel. The project, being managed by the Indiana Finance Authority and Indiana Department of Transportation, is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of 2016. The new twin three-lane tunnel under the historic Drumanard Estate requires steep cut excavations for approach and tunnel portal walls on the order of 60 feet deep through overburden soil and carbonate bedrock formations. This paper focuses on the design considerations for the permanent support of the top-down wall construction of the tunnel portal headwalls and approach retaining walls."

To assess the value of various subsidence mitigation techniques, twelve linear foundations were constructed above a longwall mine. The structures were monitored during and after undermining, and footing curvatures at the time of cracking were compared with predicted values. An unreinforced concrete footing sustained substantial damage. Other footings received varying degrees of damage, with inclusion of a sand layer significantly affecting performance. A post-tensioned concrete foundation suffered minimal cracking. Also, a technique developed by the Bureau of Mines is presented for determining the subsidence, slope, curvature and strain of the ground surface.

Froth removal rate is perhaps the most important parameter in scaling up from laboratory tests to plant froth flotation circuits. The WEMCO froth factor, the percentage of the froth height over the lip of the cell, accounts for the difference between laboratory and plant froth removal rates. As laboratory tests are generally run with a high pulp level, laboratory results are directly comparable to plant results only when a high froth factor (high pulp level) is run in the plant. When a plant does not have a high pulp level, laboratory results must be modified by using a ratio between laboratory and plant kinetics to predict plant results. This ratio, which accounts for the froth factor is important in testing any new reagents or reagent dosage levels. CQ Inc. researchers have used predictive scale-up equations using this froth factor coupled with equations for kinetics and the residence time distribution in the froth flotation cells. These equations show that modifying the froth factor in the plant can have a large impact on flotation cell yield and reagent use. EQUATIONS DESCRIBING FROTH FLOTATION Scaling up from laboratory- to plant-scale coal froth flotation has been the subject of much research and debate over the years. Determining the proper rate equation to describe flotation kinetics and an equation to describe the residence time distribution in a bank of flotation cells have been particular areas of study. As shown in Tables 1 and 2, various rate equations and residence time distribution equations have been proposed in the literature. These equations consist of one or two parameters giving the rate constant(s) in units of time-1 and a parameter for recovery at infinite time, [Roo]. Dowling, Klimpel, and Aplan (1985) evaluated the rate equations in Table 1 for their ability to fit froth flotation kinetic data and found that all of the equations give reasonably low standard errors. Several of these equations, however, proved to have superior confidence limits for the parameters. Other equations have also been proposed to describe the recovery versus time profile. Most recently, Diao et al. (1992) proposed a first-order form with a sine wave distribution. As indicated in Table 2, investigators have suggested many equations to describe the residence time distribution in continuous froth flotation. To measure the water residence time distribution in a bank of cells, a soluble tracer is often used, with the level of tracer being measured over time at the tailings discharge. This response is then put on a dimensionless basis as described by Austin et al. (1984) in order to compare mixing behavior between cells or under different conditions. Coal flotation cells are generally of the flow-through or hog-trough variety allowing for some degree of backmixing and short-circuiting. While the water residence time distribution (see Figure 1) at the end of one cell in a bank of 1.4 cu ft WEMCO froth flotation cells may approximate perfect mixing conditions (Arnold, 1989), the water residence time distribution at the end of a bank of cells does not. Figure 2 shows the RTD for various flotation cell types compared to that for perfect mixers in series. To better describe the water residence time distribution in coal froth flotation cells, Van Orden (1986) used an equation similar to the perfect-mixers-in-aeries equation. This

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM) is an underground research laboratory located in the Western Alps on the French – Italian border. It is located in the middle of the 13km long Fréjus highway tunnel that links Modane (France) to Bardonecchia (Italy) in correspondence of the highest overburden of 1800m. The LSM current activity is mainly based on the investigations about the dark matter and requires very sensitive instrumentation which shall be protected from cosmic rays. To comply with the new legislation about safety in tunnels, the highway tunnels owners agreed in 2007 the construction of a parallel safety tunnel, at an average distance of 50m from the existing tunnel and the laboratory owner CNRS (Centre National de recherche scientifique) also decided to extend the existing laboratory with the construction of a new 17000 m3 cavern allowing the installation of wider and more powerful instruments that could increase chances of success of research. Preliminary studies stated that, considering both geological and functional issues, the most appropriate location for the new laboratory shall be in between the two tunnels and parallel to the existing laboratory (see Figure 1).Hence, the CNRS asked Systra, already in charge of the works supervision of the safety tunnel, to realize the design of the new cavern. The laboratory extension includes the construction of a 40 m long cavern with 300 m² cross section and two smaller tunnels connecting the safety tunnel and the existing laboratory to the new cavern. The minimum distance between the front face of the new LSM and the highway tunnel is about 25 m.The French and the Italian authorities, responsible of the exploitation of the Fréjus highway tunnel, asked the CNRS to develop an accurate study indicating that the construction of the laboratory extension would not have any negative impact on the existing structures of the highway tunnel. The main results of the developed study by Systra are summarized hereafter. The construction works should begin prior to the end of the construction works of the Fréjus safety tunnel in 2018."

Although the first published optimum pit limit design algorithm by Lerchs-Grossmann dates back to 1965, the majority of the open-pit mines in the U.S. has not as yet adopted such a rigorous optimization algorithm. Instead, the floating cone approach initially developed by Kennecott Copper in 1961 is still used today for various reasons. However, shortcomings with the floating cone algorithm, particularly for precious metal deposits with erratic mineral distributions, have provided a renewed interest in optimizing algorithms.

Introduction The vibration energy that travels beyond the zone of rock breakage is wasted - all it does is cause damage and annoyance. Under favorable geologic conditions, this energy may travel many kilometers before it finally drops bellow the background noise level. This has forced the introduction of more restrictive limits to the allowable vibration levels. To maintain the profitability of a mine or quarry and to comply with environmental protection legislation, blasting needs to be performed in a more predictable way that will ensure that the final results are optimal in both mining and environmental terms. Minimization of ground and induced structural vibration is, therefore, a matter of good blasting practice -not just an attempt to avoid complaints from neighbors. A new approach to blast vibration minimization is presented. The method utilizes the existence of the local minimums in the frequency spectrum of single-hole blast vibration. The results are presented as a delay map showing maximum ground or structural vibration velocity for many combinations of interhole and interrow delays. A blast engineer can use this map to select an optimal combination of delays that will produce a low vibration velocity at a selected location and, at the same time, will be acceptable from the point of view fragmentation or muck pile shape. Response of structures A typical single-story building has two distinctive forms of vibration. The first form is a translatory vibration of the building superstructure (frame), and the second form is a flexural-bending vibration of the structural elements such as walls and floors (Siskind et al., 1980). Walls and floors will have several modes of oscillation. The most important is the fundamental mode of the vibration, as this mode will have the lowest frequency, the largest amplitude and will cause the largest deformations. The vibration of walls and floors is also a source of secondary vibration within a building, due to the movement of loose objects, e.g., furniture and wall fittings (Dowding, 1985). The subjective estimate of the amplitude of a vibration by the occupants of a house will be unrealistically high due to the effect of the secondary vibrations. It is now well recognized that human perception of ground vibration begins at levels that are far below those that will produce minor damage to the most fragile structures. In mining and quarrying operations, complaints regarding vibration levels tend to be determined more by human perception or annoyance rather than by observations of damage. Ground vibrations on the order of 0.08 mm/s (0.0032 ips) (Walter and Walter, 1979; Murray, 1987) can be felt, and they are often subjectively estimated to be about 100 times greater. Amplification of ground vibration in the structure depends on the amount of energy in the ground vibration spectrum that is in the vicinity of the structure's resonant frequencies together with the damping ratio of the structure at these particular frequencies. One way to avoid significant vibration amplification in a structure is to shift the dominant part of the ground vibration away from the resonant frequency range of the structure. The presented method allows for the selection of the optimum blast timing (interhole and interrow delay times) to minimize the resultant ground vibration amplitudes in a given frequency range. It also allows the selection of suboptimal, but still acceptable, blast delay times, which may be preferable from the point of view of overall blast performance. Determining frequency ranges of importance in structures In attempting to avoid amplification of vibrations in the structure, ground vibration amplitude of frequencies close to the resonant frequencies of the building needs to be minimized. The width of the frequency-minimization region is determined by the value of damping in the building. If the damping ratio is low, then the frequency-minimization region around the resonant frequency will be relatively broad. By shifting the dominant part of the ground-vibration energy into the frequency region much higher than the resonant frequency of the building (1.5 to 2 times), it is possible to achieve efficient vibration isolation of the building. Retech's Plasma Arc Centrifugal Treatment (PACT) system is a thermal technology that uses heat generated by a plasma torch to treat hazardous waste containing metals and/or organics. Metal bearing solids and soil are melted by the process, and organic contaminants are thermally destroyed. The molten material forms a hard, glass-like leach resistant mass after cooling in a mold. This paper discusses plasma processing in general and presents some results of treating mineral processing wastes using the plasma arc centrifugal treatment process.

In 1988 a major exploration program was undertaken to determine the characteristics of the rock and soil for a 7.6 m diameter sea outfall tunnel beneath Boston Harbor out into Massachusetts Bay. The diffuser discharge location had been mandated by the EPA to a 10 sq. km area of seafloor connected to the proposed Deer Island Treatment Facility by a 14.5 km tunnel corridor. Geophysical surveys, deep rock borings, and laboratory testing, provided the information for the conceptual design. The program identified the range in material types and parameters to prove feasibility of a TBM driven tunnel and to locate the optimum alignment and depth.

The Missouri-Oklahoma tripoli district was discovered and first mined in 1869 near Seneca, Missouri. Tripoli is a microcrystalline form of high-purity silica that is porous, light- weight, and friable and is derived from a parent siliceous sedimentary rock from which soluble minerals have been leached. Tripoli deposits, 2 to 20 feet thick, occur in cherty limestones of Mississippian age beneath 2 to 10 feet of overburden. They are mined in open pits up to 9 acres in size. The color of tripoli is white, but it also commonly is light pink or red where stained by red iron oxides and clays. Ground tripoli is used commercially as an abrasive or in buffing and polishing compounds and is prized for such physical characteristics as its abrasiveness, porosity, permeability, absorption, and specific gravity.

To exploit the mineral resources of fine grained ore bodies the minerals processing industry is turning to fine grinding technology, of which tower milling has become an established part. However, compared to other mills relatively little is known about the operating mechanisms in tower mills. In all milling processes one of the keys to understanding how they work is in knowing how their grinding media move. To investigate the ball motion in tower mills a glass unit was therefore constructed and measurements taken of the movement of the grinding media. This paper describes the results from this study.
