"Clays are known to contribute to a wide range of mineral processing challenges. These challenges can haunt a plant from the pit, through the beneficiation plant and even to the tailings pond and process water. Each step that the clay is present potentially experiences significant and costly impacts to the process efficiencies. The effect of clay minerals on the performance of phosphate flotation was investigated. The investigation led to an understanding of the movement of clay through the beneficiation plant, the impact on reagent usage, and the overall flotation performance. INTRODUCTION With the decline in mineral feed grades, mineral processing will continue to face challenges. One significant challenge would be obtaining high recoveries of industry specified quality mineral concentrates with lower quality raw minerals. Other challenges may be the handling of the excess tails and process water being produced to maintain a mill’s production volumes. For example, increased levels of clay have been, and will continue to be, a topic of concern for many mines. Some of these concerns include environmental regulations associated with water storage and discharge, as well as beneficiation. Gonglun Chen reported that clays produced in the phosphate industry are generally colloidal and fine (90% < 45 µm) (Chen, 2006). As such, these clays can take 20-30 years to settle, in the absence of polymeric assistance. The settling of these clays is essential as an accidental discharge can lead to substantial impacts to the wildlife and ecosystem. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has referenced cases where the discharge of water can result in fines in the tens of millions of dollars, and at times causing the processing plants shut down, depending on the volume and quality of this discharged water (EPA, 1997). The turbidity discharge criteria will vary from state to state. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection has listed a turbidity maximum of 29 NTUs, or 60 mg/L total suspended solids, above the natural background condition (Florida Department of Environmental Protection, 2016). A lot of the literature has been focused on the impact of high levels of clay (>10%) on mineral processing. Farrokhpay has reported the significant impact of clay minerals on froth stability in copper flotation (Farrokhpay, 2012). He reported that clays can form a hydrophobic slime coating on the surface of bubbles, which can yield an increase in froth stability. Clay concentrations as low as 5% can have significant impacts on the rheological properties or slurry viscosities. Increased slurry viscosities can lead to either elevated pumping/processing energies being required, decrease in flotation efficiencies due to a decrease in bubble mobility through the pulp, or decreased throughput to manage these viscosities (Tu, 2005; Farrokhpay, 2013; Burdukova, 2014)."

Mine equipment fires remain as one of the most concerning safety issues in the mining industry, and most equipment fires were caused by hot surface ignitions. Detailed experimental investigations were conducted at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Mining Research Division on hot surface ignition of liquid fuels under ventilation in a mining environment. Three types of metal surface materials (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel), three types of liquids (diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, engine oil), four air ventilation speeds (0, 0.5, 1.5, 3 m/s) were used to study the hot surface ignition probability under these conditions. Visual observation and thermocouples attached on the metal surface were used to indicate the hot surface ignition from the measured temperatures. Results show that the type of metal has a noticeable effect on the hot surface ignition, while ventilation speed has a mixed influence on ignition. Different types of liquid fuels also show different ranges of ignition temperature. Results from this work can be used to help understand equipment mine fires and develop mitigation strategies.

INTRODUCTION Dry concentration or pneumatic cleaning uses air currents as the separating medium. Pneumatic cleaning in the United States today is limited to three or four operations. In fact, the quantity of bituminous coal cleaned pneumatically has declined from its peak in 1965 of about 25.4 million tons (23.1 Mt) to its current level (1988) of less than 4 million tons (3.64 Mt) annually, as shown in Fig. 7-9 1. In 1940, pneumatic methods accounted for 15% of the bituminous coal and lignite cleaned in the United States as given in Table 7-32. Currently, pneumatic methods account for less than 2%. The largest air plant was built in Pennsylvania about 1968 with 14 units processing 1400 tph (1280 t/h) of 3/, in. X 0 (19 mm X 0) raw feed and two additional units retreating middlings. This same plant is one of only three or four plants still operating air-cleaning devices in the US. A wet plant was added in 1985 to increase the efficiency of cleaning the fines. The air plant is still used as a scalping operation for the coarse material. Five additional operations are either no longer in production or have discontinued the use of air tables within the last year. Wet cleaning methods are now being employed at the facilities that have discontinued air table operation. he advantage of dry cleaning techniques is the low moisture content of the clean coal product. However, to decrease respirable dust, mining operations must use water sprays on modem mining equipment. This water adds to the moisture content of the run-of-mine coal and decreases the effectiveness of dry cleaning processes that rely on low surface moistures in the feed to allow for good separations. Wet cleaning methods are preferred, especially since they also allow for much sharper separations. The advantage of dry cleaning techniques is the low moisture content of the clean coal product. However, to decrease respirable dust, mining operations must use water sprays on modem mining equipment. This water adds to the moisture content of the run-of-mine coal and decreases the effectiveness of dry cleaning processes that rely on low surface moistures in the feed to allow for good separations. Wet cleaning methods are preferred, especially since they also allow for much sharper separations. Despite dry concentration&apos;s drawbacks, research has continued into dry concentrating methods, including both electrostatic and magnetic separation techniques. The real application for future dry cleaning processes is probably at the power plant between the pulverizer and the boiler feed where particles are already dry and ground to fine sizes (- 200 mesh [ -0.075 mm]), increasing the effectiveness of the separation and also, possibly, increasing the liberation of clean coal from finely disseminated impurities. From a utility&apos;s viewpoint, pneumatic cleaning offers the best delivered Btu cost, based on the premise that a percent of moisture is just as detrimental as a percent of ash. The recent recession has severely impacted the performance and results of virtually all of our natural resource companies. The depressing climate continues to linger and recovery maybe sometime away. Problems remain for resource companies in the steel and petroleum industries as well as the mining business. In February, at the AIME Annual Meeting in New York, an All-Institute session presented a variety of views on the situation. A. T. Yu, chairman of ORBA Corp., Mountain Lakes, NJ, organized presentations by top management personnel of four natural resource companies. This well attended session heard management strategems for the present and views for the future. A compilation and synthesis of these presentations, gathered by Dr. Yu, are presented here for ME readers. Leading off will be William A. Griffith, president and chief executive officer of Hecla Mining Co., Wallace, ID. Other speakers presented here include Wilfred P. Schmoe, executive vice president of Du Pont Co., Wilmington, DE; Frank W. Luerssen, chairman and chief executive officer of Inland Steel Co., Chicago, IL; and Adam H. Zimmerman, president and chief operating officer of Noranda Mines Ltd., Toronto, Ontario. First, then Griffith&apos;s remarks. Introduction The key to successfully managing a natural resource company in austere times is good management in good times. In other words, position the company during prosperous times to survive the times when the well dries up. Although we know how to manage properly, for various reasons we sometimes do not do it. We forget the lessons of history. We allow ourselves to be carried away by our egos. We fail to position our companies properly in good times. As a result, in bad times we find ourselves in deep trouble. We need constant reeducation in the things we already know. In the natural resource industries, proper positioning in good times involves becoming a low-cost producer, retaining the flexibility to pull in our horns, developing a lean and effective organization, and maintaining a healthy balance sheet. Nothing improves the chance of survival during austere times as much as being able to produce at a lower cost than your competitors. In our business, that means having low-cost mines - low cost because the ore bodies are high grade or favorably located, and because they are efficiently operated. It also means recognizing the competition. The key numbers are the cost to produce an ounce of silver or gold. Nothing else really counts. And our competition is every other precious metal mine in the world. Flexibility is important when one gets stuck with a high-cost operation, often because things do not work out as we expect. It is important to be able to shut down an operation quickly and easily, without high holding costs, and without disrupting the corporate organization. A lean and mean, effective organization of competent people is vital during bad times. A company will not have that if it is not developed and maintained during good times. Introduction The US Bureau of Mines&apos; (USBM) world reserve/consumption ratios (Table 1) indicate that, if the world is relatively peaceful in the next two decades, there should be ample world supplies of minerals to permit rising standards of living for increasing world population. But it must be remembered that most mineral reserve estimates are conservative and that normal mining practice is to develop a ton of ore reserve for every ton mined. It should be noted that "reserve," as used in this paper follows the definition given in US Geological Survey (USGS) Circular 831, 1980; "that part of the reserve base which could be economically extracted or produced at the time of the determination." In addition to accurately determining the geologic parameters of mineral deposits, a judgment as to whether that deposit is a "reserve" per se involves consideration of many other factors. These factors were recognized nearly a century ago by a well-known mining engineer and later President, Herbert Hoover. In "Principles of Mining," 1909, Hoover wrote: "Unfortunately for the mining engineer, not only has he to weigh the amount of risk inherent in calculations involved in the mine itself, but also that due to fluctuations in the value of metals. If the ore is shipped to custom works, he has to contemplate also variations in freights and smelting charges ...In a free market, the law of supply and demand governs the values of metals as it does that of all other commodities. So far, except for tariff walls and smelting rings, there is a free market in the metals under discussion. The demand for metals varies with the unequal fluctuations of the industrial tides. The sea of commercial activity is subject to heavy storms, and the mine valuer is compelled to serve as weather prophet on this ocean of trouble. High prices, which are the result of industrial booms, bring about overproduction, and the collapse of these begets a shrinkage of demand, wherein consequently the tide of price turns back." Current supplies and use There have been ample supplies of most mineral materials to permit several-fold increases of world production of common major mineral based minerals (steel, aluminum, copper, and cement) over the past three decades. Motor vehicle production is a major consumer of mineral materials. However, in the last decade, down-sizing to facilitate improved fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions has reduced the weight of the average US-made automobile 15%, to 1.5 t (3200 lbs). Also in the US, there are 92 million dwelling units, or on average, fewer than three persons per dwelling unit. Construction is another major consumer of materials in the industrialized developed countries. It will also be a major consumer of materials worldwide as less developed nations seek to improve their infrastructures by adding roads, bridges, railroads, airfields, ports, and housing. Fortunately, a large number of traditional common materials, many of mineral origin and also many of agricultural origin, are readily available for construction. About Cominco Only the original Broken Hill zinc deposit in Australia is larger than Cominco&apos;s Red Dog deposit. Indeed, the third largest zinc deposit in the world is Cominco&apos;s own Sullivan mine in British Columbia. The production plan at Red Dog is based on mining 1.9 Mt/a (2.1 million stpy) or ore, to produce 635 kt (700,000 st) of zinc and lead concentrates. At full production, Red Dog will be the largest zinc mine in the Western world. It will also be one of the lowest cost producers in the Western world. And Red Dog will be one of the first major hardrock mines to operate in Alaska in modern times. The Red Dog project will be the third and largest of Cominco&apos;s Arctic mining developments in the past 13 years. The company&apos;s Black Angel mine in Greenland started up in 1973. And the Polaris mine, high in the Canadian Arctic, began production in 1982. Red Dog is one of the world&apos;s great mineral deposits. It is a unique combination of large size, high grade, and a waste-to-ore ratio less than 1:1. The present mineral reserve (Table 1) is estimated to be 77 Mt (85 million st), at a grade of 17.1% zinc, 5% lead, and 82 g/t (2.4 oz per st) of silver. Mine life is estimated at nearly 50 years. Cominco is the largest producer of lead and zinc in the Western world. Cominco&apos;s smelter in southern British Columbia is the largest lead and zinc plant in the west. Cominco also produces copper, steel, tin, gold and silver, along with potash, ammonia, urea, and phosphate fertilizers. But Cominco&apos;s major products are lead and zinc. At present, Cominco produces more than 10% of the Western world&apos;s needs for these metals. Background-Red Dog The Red Dog mineral deposit is located in northwestern Alaska, about 960 km (600 miles) by air from Anchorage, Alaska&apos;s largest city. The Red Dog region is home to more than 5000 people living in 11 villages. The largest village is Kotzebue, with a population of about 2500. The village is located about 144 km (90 miles) southwest of the mine. The country around Red Dog features rolling hills, leading into mountains to the north and east. The deposit, at an elevation of 305 m (1000 ft), is in permafrost. But the area is not nearly as cold as that encountered in the Canadian Arctic, or on Alaska&apos;s North Slope. At Red Dog, the permafrost is relatively fragile. It can be thawed fairly easily, a factor in engineering designs. Red Dog Creek flows through the mineral deposit. One of the natural phenomena at Red Dog is the presence of significant heavy metal contamination in the creek. This has eliminated all fish in the vicinity of the deposit. The contamination, and resulting mineral stain, led to the discovery of Red Dog. The staining is caused by rain and snowmelt. This leaches the heavy metals from the mineral zone, which comes right to the surface in many places. As mining progresses, this surface mantle will be removed. This will

"EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The use of membranes for the treatment of Acid-Mine-Drainage (AMD) water has been a 35 year mining industry quest that has only recently produced commercial scale Zero-Liquid-Discharge (ZLD) plants. The process of development of the membrane treatment of AMD has been defined by the water treatment industry’s efforts to control gypsum scaling of the membranes, an artifact of the concentration of calcium and sulfate ions on the concentrate or “brine” side of the membranes. Improved anti-scalants, changes to membrane surface geometry and a lowered permeate flux rate were all part of solving the calcium sulfate (gypsum) scale formation problem. Whether used singly or as part of a multi-stage membrane treatment process, the production of “left over” membrane concentrate or brine, in any volume large or small, was a second barrier to adoption of the method by the mining industry. The two identified “final brine” treatments were a) solar evaporation ponds and b) mechanical evaporators. Brine disposal by solar means is typically site limited to flat terrains or high net evaporation locations. Mechanical evaporation-crystallization is applicable at all sites but, typically, at onerously high ownership and operating costs. Miwatek, a South African water treatment start-up, has entered the mining AMD ZLD marketplace with two new, pilot-scale tested, processes, both of which are predicated on the innovative treatment of a reasonably concentrated AMD and neither of which produces a final brine that requires disposal. In the Miwatek Brine Treatment, MBT, method the membrane brine is caustic pH adjusted and de-calcified precedent to passage through a second membrane plant. The caustic is generated on-site by a lime treatment of the second-membrane concentrate. The first- and second-stage permeates are blended for discharge. The process usually yields no “final brine” for disposal. In the Miwatek Ettringite Treatment, MET, method a low pH first-stage membrane brine is lime treated in two or three steps in the presence of aluminum in a way that metal hydroxide and calcium sulfate solids are formed and purged from the system. Sufficient aluminum is often present in the feed water to, with judicious recycling, enable operation of the lime-aluminum treatment without the purchase of outside aluminum reagent. The first-stage membrane permeate is blended with the lime-aluminum treated membrane concentrate for discharge. The indications are that the method can comfortably meet the low 250 -500 ppm SO4 discharge water quality standards that have most recently been proposed in South America. The process yields no “final brine” that requires disposal. Projected own-operate costs for the MBT and MET systems are less than the estimated costs for all identified alternative treatments."

"Owners constructing new combined sewer overflow (CSO) systems increasingly seek to have project design lives of 100 or more years in response to the growing size, complexity, and cost to construct and operate these systems. However, a codified and universally accepted approach to achieving this goal in the United States does not currently exist since service life prediction is a relatively new technical field. This paper discusses how the 100-year design life requirement was met for the design of tunnels, drop shafts, and diversion structures in the DC Clean Rivers Program (DCCRP). The authors identify some commonly referenced publications, present the testing framework used by the program manager to characterize the CSOs, review the design criteria used to guide the 100-year design life development, and establish guidelines to be considered by program managers and designers when implementing similar extended design life requirements in other CSO control programs.INTRODUCTIONLike many older cities in the United States, the sewer system in the District of Columbia consists of both combined sewers and separate sanitary sewers. When the capacity of a combined sewer is exceeded during storm events, the excess flow, which is a mixture of sewage and storm water runoff, is discharged to the District’s receiving water bodies (Anacostia River, Potomac River, and Rock Creek) and tributaries through outfall structures. This excess discharge during storm events is called a combined sewer overflow or CSO. A total of 53 CSO outfalls for the combined sewer system are listed in DC Water’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The DC Clean Rivers Program (DCCRP) will reduce the number of CSO outfalls into the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and decrease flooding in DC neighborhoods during extreme rain events by capturing, storing, and conveying diverted CSOs to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines recently conducted a limited-scope study on the use of lineament analysis and electromagnetic geophysics to better identify the surface expressions of faults at the Cimmaron Mine near Raton, NM, an operating longwall mine in the York Canyon mine complex. Two normal faults were encountered by the mine, one during gate road development and drilling and another only through drilling. The potential ground control problems and offsets associated with these faults will severely impact long-range development plans, so it is essential to know the lateral extent of these faults within the coal reserves. The surface topography at the site is fairly rugged, yet outcrop exposure is poor. There is no obvious visible geologic evidence to indicate that the faults identified at depth extend to the surface. Both the geophysical and remote sensing techniques provided information on the presence and extent of important geologic structures which could not be gained just from drilling and surface outcrops. The geophysical surveys also were invaluable in confirming the presence of subsurface geologic structures in the vicinity of the lineaments assumed to be associated with the faulting.

The Falcon concentrator is capable of separating minerals in fine size classes based on their differential density. Separation of mineral particles depends upon the fluid flow characteristics and relative movement of particles in a fluid. In the present study, a fluid flow characteristic inside the Falcon concentrator was established through experimentation and modeling. The Falcon concentrator has two fluid entry points: (a) Fluid entering through gravity assisted feeding system and (b) Fluid entering through the fluidized hole on the concentrator wall. In order to identify the role of fluid entering the concentrator, a tracer was injected into the system. As per the tracer based experimentation, it was established that fluid entering through the gravity based feeding system is responsible for thin flowing film formation in the stratification zone where particles are stratified based on their relative density. The momentum balance and continuity equations were simplified for a high centrifugal force field, and the fluid velocity profile was estimated inside the thin flowing film. Estimated fluid flow profiles will help to simulate the particle trajectories inside the Falcon concentrator. The influence of rotational speed, fluid flow rate, and cone angle on the fluid velocity profile were investigated. Fluid thickness over the concentrator wall is also estimated, and it is typically of the order of ~150–200 μm.

The mining industry is one of the three pillars of the Namibian economic development, besides tourism and the fishing industry. Generating 20 % of the GDP and more than 50 % of the export income, half of this amount derives from the diamond mining industry. In 2008, the annual production of 2.2 mio carat achieved an income higher than 1.44 billion Namibian Dollars (more than 750 mio Euro). After the global recession in early 2009, which also caused a significant downcrease in production to only 0.93 mio Carat, the diamond mining industry easily restored itself and the production figures for 2010 are expected to be even higher than those achieved in 2008. Compared to other diamond producing countries, Namibia is mainly producing diamonds of highest quality (jewellery quality), with less than 10 % of the mined diamonds not falling into this category. This high quality stands also for the worldwide highest prize achieved per carat. With 370 $US per carat it is more than four times higher than that of the average South African stone. In 1908 the finding of the first diamonds in the Namib desert close to the coastal town of Lüderitz was reported by a Mr Stauch, railway inspector for the then German colonial railway company. This event immediately triggered a Diamond Rush and subsequently the set-up of the restricted diamond mining area ?Sperrgebiet? through the German colonial administration. In 1913, only five years after the first mining operations had started, the steadily increasing production allowed for more than 20 % of the diamond production worldwide. After the First World War, the new South African government concentrated all mining activities in one organization, CDM (Consolidated Diamond Mines of South West Africa) which in following decades conducted an extensive and detailed exploration of the whole Sperrgebiet and started numerous new diamond mining operations.

Mineral processing activities in general reflected the economic ills of 1981 and early 1982, but in some areas the depressed state of the industry resulted in increased activity. As were all aspects of the minerals industry, processing plant operations were severely affected by the recession-prone economy, by sagging prices for primary metal products-copper, molybdenum, nickel, iron, manganese, and especially uranium-and numerous shutdowns and layoffs. Copper production by major producers in Arizona and Utah was severely curtailed; Amax, the major US molybdenum, producer did considerable belt-tightening; and the uranium industry was in a state of disaster. Even the precious metal superstars-gold and silver-were affected, with a steady decline throughout the year in world market prices. Perhaps hardest hit have been newly developed properties, particularly in the uranium industry, and old-line properties where historical development impacts today. No longer can such properties afford the luxuries, for example, of a long haul distance between mine and plant or continued use of antiquated facilities. Surprisingly enough, the very state of the economy has caused increased activity in some sectors of the mineral processing industry. In mill design, although large projects have been tabled, smaller projects have gone on, with innovations in design, often for cost-saving reasons, that will affect future designing approaches. Economic restrictions are impacting on mill flowsheets as researchers look for improvements and better, less expensive techniques. Other unit processes-hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, concentration, materials handling-are impacted by the need for a better, less costly product. Although at the end of the first quarter of 1982, no major environmental legislation had been enacted, rumors persist that there will be a loosening of some of the stricter standards, both in the requirements themselves and in the time allowance for implementation. The year had seen some relaxation in how current legislation and standards are administered. For example, in OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) operations, there has been a shift toward voluntary checking of industry compliance with work rules, rather than emphasis on agency inspections. However, the industry continues to view environmental factors as having major influence on future operations and efforts to design for environmental safety are becoming almost as important as the processes themselves. Throughout the industry there has been a further focussing on project management, recognizing the necessity for tight control of budgets and schedules-and the systems used to effect them. Many modern export terminals are now in construction while others have either been held up or cancelled. Economics and environmental permits have been some of the major problems. Currently under construction are terminals in Newport News, VA; Charleston, SC; and Baltimore, MD. Expansion of existing facilities at Mobile, AL, and New Orleans, LA, is also well under way. A wide variety of systems and components are being used. They include traveling shiploaders, tunnel and bucket wheel reclaim¬ers, stackers and high line trippers, and bottom and side dump-type car dumpers. The iron and steel industry continues to operate at depressed production levels due to the low level of demand for steel and foundry products. Crude steel production in the Western world dropped by 13.7% from 459.3 Gt (506 billion st) in 1981 to 396.4 Gt (437 billion st). The reduction was particularly severe in North America where the industry suffered a loss of 37.3% from 123.6 to 77.5 Gt (136 to 85 billion st). This reduced level of production severely affected iron ore and agglomerates output. Substantial curtailment was made in both sintering and pelletizing plants to meet reduced demand. The pressure on these plant operators shifted from quantity to quality. With energy cost becoming an ever increasing part of production costs, conservation was a major area of emphasis. Iron Making Sinter has continued to be the favored burden for blast furnaces overseas. As hot metal production declined and excess sintering capacity developed, many of the overseas operators that have been using pellets found it advantageous on hot metal production cost to increase the ratio of sinter at the expense of pellets. This was the case despite the depressed price level of pellets in the world market. In North America where pellets have been the predominant burden material-mainly because it is necessary to pelletize the fine grain iron ores available domestically-there was also increased interest in sinter usage. Bethlehem Steel Corporation&apos;s 13.6-m (44.5-ft) furnace at Sparrows Point experimented with a burden with more than 70% of sinter during the second half of the year and indicated some favorable results as compared to its previous 50% super flux sinter and 50% acid pellet burden. The blast furnace operators continued to press for improved burden quality. In addition to the emphasis on the importance of burden chemistry and quality, uniformity, much emphasis was placed on improving reducibilitiy and high temperature metallurgical qualities. These burden properties were recognized to hold further promise in reducing fuels rates. Sintering With reduced consumption caused by the cutback in hot metal production, many sinter plants sat idle while others operated at greatly reduced rates. The deemphasis on production in many plants allowed them to experiment with various means to reduce operating costs. The most notable action was the introduction of low cost South American pellet feed fines into the sinter ore mix. These feed fines, which are finer than 150 µm (100 mesh) ore, were previously thought to be too fine for sintering. However, when the full production rate is not required the use of up to 40% in the ore mix was reported to be successful with the aid of burnt lime and adequate premixing and granulation of the sinter mix before sintering. The emphasis on quality and tighter cost control also has resulted in a further breakthrough in sintering technology. It was recognized that good feed preparation-including selection of compatible ores, good blending, good pseudo-particle formation, additive size control increased bed depth, and closed control of the sintering bed heat pattern-could allow the production of high quality sinters with much lower heat input and FeO level. Bed depth of more than 600 mm (23.6 in.) was practiced in a number of operations. Total heat input of better than 1.3 GJ/t (290,300 kcal per st) has been achieved. "Construction of the OceanaGold Haile operation’s process plant in Kershaw, South Carolina is currently under way, with ore through the mill expected in late 2016 and commercial production expected in early 2017. The process is designed to treat 6,350 tonnes per day with minor upgrades required to achieve 8,270 tonnes per day. Plant optimization during detailed engineering, combined with a focus on de-risking the process, has resulted in numerous process changes since the initial design. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio operation, whilst identifying potential expansion opportunities. INTRODUCTION Haile Gold Mine is located in Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The last operation employed heap leaching from 1985 through 1992. Since then, the property has been closed and fully reclaimed. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that delineated 2.02Moz. of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2.06 g/t. OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals and the Haile Operation in October of 2015. OceanaGold operates under a risk management philosophy in all aspects of operation, both corporately and at each individual business unit, and has implemented numerous process changes to eliminate or mitigate risks identified in the initial design of the processing circuit, and provided increased opportunity for optimization and expansion. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio Operation, and identifies potential expansion opportunities. INITIAL PROCESSING CIRCUIT DESIGN An extensive metallurgical test work program was undertaken by Romarco Minerals and third party laboratories during the initial design phase of the Haile project [1]. This preliminary test work provided the technical information as a basis of plant design. The initial flow sheet for the Haile processing circuit is shown in Figure 1 (see APPENDIX). The plant is designed to process 6,350 tpd (7,000 stpd) on an annualized basis. The process begins with a jaw crusher followed by a SAG and ball mill grinding circuit to reduce particle size to P80 74 µm. A flash flotation cell treats 50% of the cyclone underflow in the ball mill circuit. Grinding circuit product is sent to a rougher flotation circuit to recover gold-bearing pyrite. The flotation concentrates from flash and rougher flotation are reground to P80 13 µm using stirred media detritors (SMD’s). The rougher flotation tail is pumped to the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit for gold recovery. The reground concentrate is pre-aerated prior to being pumped to the CIL circuit. The CIL circuit is a hybrid circuit with eight tanks. Tank 1 leaches the pre-aerated concentrate only, and tanks 2 through 8 leach the combined flotation tailing and tank 1 discharge. The carbon strip circuit is a standard pressure Zadra system, followed by electrowinning, and refining using an induction furnace. CIL tailing passes through a cyanide recovery thickener prior cyanide destruction and then pumped to the tailing storage facility (TSF)."

"INTRODUCTIONProject-related studies showed that lab tests are a helpful tool for the planning of EPB tunneling and soil conditioning in cohesionless soils. This type of ground commonly represents the extended application range for EPB shields, which demands for a treatment with additives. Considering soil conditioning with foam, so far, approaches exist for the investigation of the foam quality and of the conditioning behavior of soils (e.g. (EFNARC GUIDELINES 2001 2003)), but not any standards for testing procedures related to soil conditioning. State-of-the-art research on the topic is and was conducted for example in Bochum (Germany) cf. (Budach 2012; Maidl 1995), in Lyon (France) cf. (Quebaud et al. 1998), in Oxford and Cambridge (Great Britain) cf. (Borghi 2006; Peña Duarte 2007), in Delft (Netherlands) cf. (Bezuijen and Schaminée 2001), in Turin (Italy) cf. (Borio 2010; Peila et al. 2013; Vinai 2006), and in Aachen (Germany) cf. (Vennekötter 2012). Additionally, applied science is reported by the tunneling practice and suppliers of conditioning agents. Although the research focus in all these and further studies varied, similar test methods and test series were applied. A standardization of essential properties and testing methods (setup and procedures) however did not take place. The results from laboratory testing can only function as index values for practice because in the studies, production and application of the conditioning agents mainly takes place under atmospheric conditions. Nevertheless, the tests enable basic understanding of feasibility as well as processes and interactions going on during soil conditioning. For recommendations for standardized and reproducible testing see (Budach 2012; Budach and Thewes 2015).The most extensive investigations on the flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures have been performed by using the slump test from concrete engineering, cf. (DIN EN 12350-2 2009-08), which originally is applied on evaluating the workability of fresh concrete. Although this test does not describe the actual flow behavior, it rather represents an index on the workability, very much experience exists with this test method. Besides others, the workability – or flow behavior – of the EPB support medium certainly is a major factor of influence on the properties of the material in the excavation chamber and thus, for effective tunneling with EPB shields, cf. (Galli and Thewes 2014). For a summary of various investigations on the workability of conditioned soils using the slump test and resulting recommended slump ranges see (Budach 2012; Vinai 2006). Thereof, slumps between 10 and 20 cm have been reported as suitable workability for EPB applications. However, there is actually not much known about the real flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures related to rheological properties such as the viscosity (?) or potential yield stresses (t0). These physical values are necessary for a realistic determination of face pressure, for the design of required torques, and for an evaluation of the material flow at different locations in the excavation chamber, in the screw conveyor or on the conveyor belt. To generate a linear pressure distribution at the tunnel face, as it is assumed a priori, a low-viscosity fluid is favorable, whereas in the screw conveyor, a high-viscous fluid is needed for a controlled pressure decrease. On the conveyor belt, yield stress plays an important role preventing deliquescence and spilling from the belt. Attempts in characterizing the actual flowing of soil-foam mixtures have so far only been made by few researchers, the application of rheometry is rare."

Introduction Many discoveries have been made during the-past decade of low grade gold-silver deposits in the western US. This has stimulated development of low cost cyanidation procedures for precious metal extraction. Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for application to these low grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste, and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successful, these resources must have good permeability to achieve uniform distribution of the cyanide solution throughout the heaps. Some of the most difficult of the gold and silver ores to treat successfully by heap leaching are those containing excessive amounts of clays, or fines generated by crushing. Presence of excessive amounts of slimes, -50 µm (-270 mesh), in the heap leach feed will slow percolation, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap. This causes the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than penetrate the ore bed. The problem of heap leaching ores with fines can be aggravated while preparing ore heaps because of the natural sorting of coarse and fine material that occurs. This phenomenon results in concentration or ore fines in the center of individual ore piles and concentration of larger rock fragments of the lower slopes and base of the pile. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off for the installation of the sprinkling system, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. This results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. Consequently, the leach solutions follow the course of least resistance. They percolate down through the coarse ore regions and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective use of marginal gold and silver resources by heap leaching required development of new methods to achieve more uniform size distribution when preparing ore heaps and better slime control during leaching. Early methods Agglomeration and balling of crushed ore to produce a porous and more uniform feed material for heap leaching is a viable method for treating clayey ores. Researchers from the US Bureau of Mines in Reno, NV began agglomeration pretreatment research in the mid-1970s for applications to and exploitation of these poor percolating feed materials. Little attention had been given to such methods before the Bureau&apos;s research. In 1905, T. C. Scrutton developed a unique technique for obtaining rapid vat leaching of a clayey ore where the gold was finely disseminated. His technique consisted of rolling the ore down a chute inclined at 60° to form agglomerates or balls readily permeable by the cyanide solution. However, these agglomerates lacked rigidity. And, to ensure good percolation leaching and washing, they could not be bedded in layers more than 1 m (3 ft) deep. If this depth was exceeded, it is difficult to obtain uniform leaching and washing. This results in reduced gold recovery. Shepard and others in 1937 studied the addition of lime and carbon dioxide or calcium carbonate to gold-bearing tailings to form agglomerates suitable for vat leaching. Satisfactory percolation flow rates were achieved in 90 g (3 oz) scale experiments, but the reagent requirements were cost prohibitive. Introduction One hundred years ago, a recent college graduate created the US aluminum industry. He found an economic way to crack the primeval bond that makes the metal so special. Aluminum doesn&apos;t "rust" - oxidize progressively. Rather, when exposed to air, it instantly forms a gem-hard but microscopic oxide coating. This seals off oxygen from the metal underneath. Scratch it and the seal reforms instantly. That tight chemical bond is the reason the metal is not found in nature; it exists only as a compound. The bond had to be broken to free the shiny metal. But once it is free, that self-sealing protection, alongside a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, offers a marvelous material. Until 100 years ago, finding a way to do that economically was a challenge that defied science. Then it was solved, in a remarkable coincidence, on both sides of the Atlantic. And the way was paved for a material that would become the second most widely used metal in the world. Until that time, aluminum was a rare and precious metal. But then two young scientists independently invented the process that took aluminum outside the laboratory and into applications ranging from pots and pans to spacecraft. Discovery of aluminum Other major metals - copper, iron, lead, gold, and silver - had been used for thousands of years. But aluminum was entirely unknown until 1782, when French chemist Antoine Lavoisier suspected its presence. It was not actually discovered until Sir Humphry Davy, in England, detected it in clay in 1807. It was first isolated as a free metal only in 1825, by Denmark&apos;s Hans Christian Oersted. For years, laboratory methods yielded aluminum only in tiny amounts costing about $1200/kg ($545 per lb) - $13,333/kg ($6000 per lb) in today&apos;s dollars. Methods developed by French scientist Henri Sainte-Claire Deville in 1854 cut the cost to about $200/kg ($90 per lb). King Frederick VII of Denmark had a helmet of aluminum and gold. And Emperor Napoleon III of France reportedly served his most exalted guests at a state dinner with aluminum plates. He left the lower ranks to dine from pure gold. Deville and others continued to reduce production costs. But the price of aluminum still rivaled silver - $31/kg ($14 per lb) versus about $35/kg ($16 per lb) for silver. Then in 1884, a 2.8-kg (6.25-1b), 230-mm-tall (9-in.-tall) aluminum pyramid was cast as the tip of the Washington Monument. It was probably the first architectural use of aluminum. And it is still there after more than a century. The attractive properties of aluminum were obvious: it is lightweight but strong, conducts heat and electricity, reflects light and other electromagnetic radiation, and resists corrosion. But its commercial promise was blocked by its cost. In 1885, the price of aluminum was $17.70/kg ($8 per lb). It stayed there for the next couple of years until the Hall-Heroult process brought it down sharply. Hall-Heroult process lowers aluminum costs The characteristic that kept aluminum hidden so long continued to thwart chemists. Aluminum clings to oxygen so tightly that it is never found as a free metal in nature, and it is hard to break that bond chemically. The best chemical methods of the 1880s required sodium, and sodium itself was expensive. At Oberlin College in Ohio, chemistry professor Frank Fanning Jewett advised his students that anyone who could make aluminum inexpensive would do humanity a favor and get rich as well.

The Rio Tinto-Zinc Corporation Limited (RTZ), through it exploration company Riofinex, commenced exploration for bauxite in the Amazonia region of Brazil during 1970. Following&apos; encouraging indications, exploration licences were taken out and an exploration programme was initiated In February 1975, a preliminary &apos;feasibility report indicated that a project, based on the Miltonia plateau located close to the town of Paragominas in the State of Para, was viable and that barging might offer an economic solution to getting the product to an ocean-going port. A, decision was taken in April 1975 to proceed with a full feasibility study. In the latter stages of the study, an engineering consortium of Mendes Junior and Bechtel do Brasil was employed to review, and modify if necessary, the concepts that RTZ had developed for the project&apos;s operation. With these concepts agreed, the consortium was requested to make capital and operating cost estimates, and these became available during February 1978. The deposit is being developed by a Brazilian company Mineracao Vera Cruz S.A. (MVC) in which the present share-holding is owned 64 percent by RTZ and 36 percent by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD). RTZ is a British based international group of mining and industrial companies with interests in almost every major metal and fuel. CVRD is a Brazilian mining company, 85 percent owned by the Brazilian Government, with a major interest in iron ore and also other non-ferrous metals. It is intended, in due course, that the company will become majority owned by Brazilian interests.

INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn&apos;t been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker&apos;s unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.

The Alligator Ridge mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 113 km (70 miles) northwest of Ely, NV. The deposit was discovered in 1976 by a lone prospector working under a grubstake contract for Amselco Minerals Inc. Evaluation of mine potential proceeded quickly. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility and mine design studies by the end of 1978. Mine construction began in early 1980. By September of that year, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold was poured a few months later. Alligator Ridge is designed to produce 1.9 t (60,000 oz) of gold each year. The projected mine life, based on proven reserves, is to mid-1988. However, Amselco is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine&apos;s life. Amselco, a subsidiary of the British Petroleum Co., is based in Denver, CO. The company is mine operator and jointly owns the project with Nerco Minerals Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light. Alligator Ridge is Amselco&apos;s first US mining operation. Geology Alligator Ridge, so named because it appears in outline to be an alligator at rest, contains disseminated micron gold embedded in iron-streaked siltstones. Although definitive conclusions have not been drawn on age and origin, the gold ore bodies are probably young by geological standards. They were formed in a recent volcanic period still evidenced in parts of Nevada by geysers and hot springs. As these superheated solutions rose through the permeable siltstones, they deposited minerals in the rock and formed the present gold ore bodies. During 1977, an extensive soil geochemical sampling program with additional geologic mapping and outcrop sampling were conducted. The results generated several drill targets. Initial drilling was performed in November and December 1977, and ore grade mineralization was encountered in the first drill hole. The Alligator Ridge mine is unusual in relation to other and more recent western US mineral discoveries in that it occupies an area that had no previous mining history. The ore deposits are hosted in upper Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that consist predominantly of a thick carbonate sequence. The main ore host is the Devonian-Mississippian Pilot shale, which occurs locally as a sequence of thin bedded calcareous, carbonaceous siltstones and claystones. The maximum observed thickness of the Pilot section in the mine area is about 140 m (460 ft). Rocks in the Alligator Ridge area have been folded into a series of low amplitude anticlines and synclines that strike north-south and plunge to the south at about 20°, with limbs that dip nearly 20°. The folds have been truncated and deformed by later high-angle faults that generally strike northwest. Although multiple stages of movement are evident on the fault systems, the youngest period of activity is along the major northeast trend. The predominant structural pattern in the area is of the basin- and range-type high angle normal faults. Alligator Ridge is actually a horst block between two basin and range faults. Vantage Ore Deposits There are three principal ore deposits within the Vantage Basin and several smaller satellite mineralized areas. The three Vantage deposits are encompassed in a mineralized zone that covers an area 915 m (3,000 ft) long and 305 m (1,000 ft) wide. All mineralized zones have been outlined by more than 600 rotary drill holes, with an average depth of 150 m (500 ft). Mineralization occurs in both carbonaceous and oxidized rocks. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is not amenable to current heap leaching practice. Therefore, only oxidized ores are now treated. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is segregated and stockpiled as it is encountered during mining.
