Introduction The mining industry is perhaps best characterized by the numerous and abnormally high risks associated with the business of mining and by its most basic assets - ore deposits, people and technology. At the most fundamental level, it is the quality and effective utilization of these basic assets that determine a mining company's ability to compete efficiently in the international market place. The gold industry has received much attention in recent years and especially in recent months, for good reason. This commodity serves as an excellent platform for the subsequent discussion of these three basic assets and their role in mining's future. Facets of the gold industry The fate of this noble metal in recent times illustrates some of the various risks associated with the mining industry and the importance of high-quality assets, whether they be ore deposits, people or technologies. The following comments pertaining to the gold industry help place proper focus on subsequent discussions. All monetary amounts given are in US dollars. Throughout 1997, falling gold prices broke record after record: first hitting three-year lows, then a 12-year low in July and finally an 18-year low at year's end. From Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 1997, the price of gold fell by more than $2.57/g ($80/oz), or some 22%. The decline in gold-mining profitability and stock prices was even more dramatic. At the beginning of 1997, the 20 largest gold producers in North America had a market capitalization of approximately $44.5 billion. At year's end, this market cap had fallen to $26.2 billion, a reduction of 41%. The total market cap of all the world's gold companies fell from $71 billion to $46 billion, a 35% drop (Serwer, 1998). Analyses suggest that, at a spot gold price of $9.65/g ($300/oz), only one, or possibly two, North American gold-producing companies can make money when break-even or "total costs of production" are considered. While strong hedge positions mitigate this situation in the short term, clearly, this is an industry in desperate straits. For example, write-downs for North American producers in 1997 were approximately $2.5 billion. Speculative short positions in 1997 were near historical record highs and generally exceeded long positions by factors of 9:1 or 10:1. Much of this is driven by some US commercial banks, hedge fund managers and commodity speculators who can significantly move gold prices sharply over short periods of time by selling gold they do not own in the expectation they can buy it back at a lower price before they have to deliver. These signifcant short positions are likely to continue as long as central banks are willing to sell or loan gold to financial institutions that in turn make the gold available to speculators who hope to capitalize on price fluctuations. The Far East accounts for approximately 26% of the annual demand for gold. Including India, the region accounts for 43% of total demand. More than 85% of the physical demand for gold is for investment jewelry in Asia and the Middle East. This demand is extraordinarily price sensitive. The fairly recent turmoil in Asian markets and economies, combined with currency devaluations throughout the region, have made gold more expensive (30% to 50% in local currencies) for those peoples most likely to treat gold as a safe investment haven. Higher interest rates also have reduced the amount of money they have to spend on consumer goods such as jewelry. All of these recent Asian events are deflationary in nature. "In Europe, and therefore in Hungary opening a new mine is harder and harder. Depletion of mines, unfavourable legal and economic changes, and growing public concerns are the main reasons. Social and economic interests require total utilization of mineral raw materials of the operating mines, and furthermore utilization of waste heaps of the former mines. There are 5-6000 waste heaps of the operating and the closed mines in Hungary. 2000 of these waste heaps have already been estimated, and researches show that total amount of waste heaps can be calculated to 1 billion tones. These researches left out of consideration waste heaps exploited and placed in deep lignite mining. In several projects and researches we analysed processing of waste heap and possibilities to use its components. A processing technology for utilizing waste heaps has been developed based on laboratory and pilot plant tests. Great amount of useful materials of quarrying waste heaps can be utilized with this technology. Tests were also done for processing waste heap of a former ferrous metals mining. The developed processing technology contributes to use these waste heaps as aggregate for cement industry, as dielectric and aggregate for construction. The essay presents in details main characteristics of waste heaps, technologies already used for processing waste heaps of quarrying and ferrous metals mining, mass balances and qualitative parameters of the end products."

For the first half of the 21st century, the United States will rely on the same mix of fuels it has for the past 50 years. Petroleum for the United States will cost more and availability will decline as developing nations modernize. Increased use of natural gas for electric power generation will result in stress on the gas supply. Coal will be the fuel of last resort. More than half the petroleum used is imported, about the same amount as used for transportation. Only coal can provide relief by fueling railroads through electrification while encouraging “piggy-back” trailer haulage, co-generation for manufacturing and expanded passenger service.

Mine fires and/or explosions continue to occur. While these are unusual events, they comprise emergency situations. Whenever one of these events occurs, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) responds with specially trained teams, mine fire experts, sophisticated scientific instrumentation, and trained instrument operators. In order to analyze mine air samples on-site, because time is of the essence, MSHA has a Mobile Gas Laboratory. The laboratory, which is stored near Pittsburgh, is totally self-contained. Sending air samples to a laboratory would take too long. Mine fire experts need the results of the latest analyses as soon as they are finished. The mobile laboratory is housed in the box of a diesel truck. Benches line both sides of the laboratory. Gas chromatographs are mounted on the benches. There is sufficient bench space for multiple bench top gas chromatographs. These instruments and their controllers are shock and vibration isolated to protect them during transit. The mobile laboratory can operate using on board diesel generators or line power. An uninterrupted power supply (UPS) supplies power to the instruments while switching from generator to line power or visa versa. Therefore, analysis of samples can proceed without interruption if a power failure would occur. In the rear of the mobile laboratory are racks that hold compressed gas cylinders. These cylinders contain carrier gas and compressed air. An air compressor is housed under the laboratory to operate the gas chromatograph actuators. Within several hours after arriving at a mine the instruments have stabilized and have been calibrated. The mobile laboratory is ready to begin analyzing air samples. The mobile laboratory has proved itself at many mine fires and explosions since its purchase.

The Sales Comparison Approach to estimating the value of a mineral property must always be attempted1 . In addition to other parameters, the approach depends heavily on the availability of transaction data. The consideration for the mineral property must be in form of cash, cash equivalent or other consideration. In other words, “What dollar amount did the property sell for?” Mineral properties are generally real estate, albeit frequently buried deeply under the overlying surface real estate, unless the property may be a quarry. In some states, transactions must be recorded in county courthouses, and the sale consideration must be included. In such cases, the appraiser’s job is made easy. In other locations, the sale considerations are withheld in the courthouse data; but occasionally a local transfer tax is collected and recorded. Again, the appraiser’s job is made easy by back calculation with knowledge of the legislated transfer tax percentage. The worst problem occurs when the consideration for a mineral real estate sale is totally withheld. That may occur in so-called nondisclosure states. Vertically stirred media mills are a highly effective low-footprint solution for the ultrafine grinding of industrial minerals. This work investigates the effect of media density on flow patterns within the mill. Direct irradiation of a media particle leads to decay through positron emission, consequently forming two anti-parallel gamma rays, which allow for the real time tracking of particle position. Grinding media of the same size, but with a range of specific gravities are followed using this method, and the effect on the flow within the mill is revealed. The technique is seen to be an effective method to highlight the velocity profiles within the mill, as well as the zones where grinding is less efficient ? areas of relatively low velocity and high residence time. The changing media is seen to effect the overall flow patterns within the mill, having consequential effects on the efficiency of the grind.

Hilltop Interceptor Contract G is one of the segments of the wastewater control system in the greater Cleveland area. The tunnel is a relief interceptor constructed by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District to minimize combined sewer overflows in the Easterly Service Area. The design study identified the need for a 3.35 m (132 in) diameter, 3.35 km (11,000 ft)in-line storage conveyance tunnel to be constructed at depths of 30 to 70 m (100 to 230 ft).Six structures for access, future flow drop, work shafts and overflow control were required to complete the system. The interceptor reduced the design peak flow from 12.5 m3/s(285 mgd) to 6.1 m3/s (140 mgd) by detaining in line 22,800 m3 (six million gallons) of wastewater.

Due to safety-imposed constraints on clearances for mobile bulk handling equipment, it is necessary to optimally select a unit based on speed and size. The unit cannot be both large and fast. Since output is proportional to both size (or capacity) and speed, the combination must be carefully examined to maximize output. A simple graphical procedure and a calculus-based solution are presented to accomplish this. While the procedure applies to all mobile bulk handlers, as an example of the solution technique, attention is focused on shuttle cars. Background Major variables To fully define a bulk handling problem, the conditions, equipment, and activities must be characterized. The conditions and activities, when lumped together, are termed "encumbered space," since they "act to impede motion, as with a burden" (Lineberry, 1979). The insertion of mobile bulk handling equipment into what is already a difficult set of conditions and activities compounds the state of encumbrance, as limited space is competed for by many normal and life support systems. Long (1972) recognized the effects of design criteria, including road width, on haulage vehicle speed and, therefore, on production. Velocity -clearance curves Velocity-clearance curves are either available or can be constructed in the field. A preliminary set of curves for average conditions and activities is shown in Fig. 1, where clearances are only for the side of the vehicle (Lineberry and Adler, 1984). These curves set the safe speed limits for a vehicle operating at given clearances, under given conditions and activities. When feasible, velocity-clearance curves should be constructed through field measurement and observation. Curve construction should also consider haulway roughness, distances, and operator skill, as well as loading and dumping characteristics. It should be noted that haulage capacity determination is a total systems problem, not one just dependent on velocity and clearances. Production requirements and company capabilities also influence capacity determination.

Siemens’ answer is the latest gearless drive technology for grinding and conveying. Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train, the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71 percent — as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay Mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications.The gearless principleThe principal idea behind a gearless drive system is to reduce the number of components and diversity of parts, especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material.In order to apply this principle of simplification, the components of a conventional drive system are examined. They consist of:• Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump).• Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear/pinion).• The electric motor.• Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage.• Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation.• The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment)."

About 70% of the world?s total boron reserves are located in Turkey. Boron minerals are typically concentrated by attrition scrubbing followed by screening and classification to remove clay minerals and other impurities. These wet concentration methods, however, result in a considerable amount of accumulated tailings in large tailings dams. The tailings are approximately 28% solids and contain 14% B2O3. Problems caused by these tailings can be minimized by employing dry beneficiation techniques involving heat treatment. This method has been successfully tested on laboratory and pilot scales. During heat treatment, borax undergoes expansion in volume. The amount of expansion is dependent on the particle size, temperature and duration of heat treatment. Because the optimum temperature and the duration of the heat treatment are not well defined, the boron ore acts as a calcined clay mineral and is discarded along with the gangue. It is important to predict such parameters using mathematical formulations. Thus, a mathematical model is used to predict the required temperature and duration period prior to heat treatment. In the experimental study presented here, a series of systematic thermal tests was carried out in a muffle furnace. Two variables, temperature and time, were studied in a response surface design. A quadratic regression model was chosen and regression coefficients were calculated. Using a regression equation, the volume expansion of the particles in various circumstances can be predicted. The mathematical test results are then correlated with the experimental results to relate the optimum expansion of borax with heating time and temperature and with borax grades and recoveries.

Staying competitive in the highly aggressive Powder River Basin is a challenge facing all operators. Any advantage that a mine utilizes to improve productivity and reduce costs could mean the difference in the tight spot coal market. Technological advances in mining equipment and data acquisition at the Eagle Butte Mine in Gillette, Wyoming result in productivity gains and increased maintenance awareness. A new overburden haulage truck fleet with an onboard payload and fault monitoring system interacts via telemetry with the loading shovel and PC's located in production and maintenance offices, enabling staff to monitor production and maintenance on a real-time basis. This paper will describe the system and highlight the benefits realized as a result of its implementation.

Humic-acid-rich deposits exist in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, New York, North Dakota, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, and Wyoming (Burdick, 1965) and in New Mexico (Shomaker and Hiss, 1974). New Mexico humic deposits are associated with coal in the northwestern part of the state where humate and weathered coal are presently mined. Discussion of the humic -acid industry in New Mexico requires an understanding of complex terminology and coal geology. TERMINOLOGY Humic material is not a pure substance so an ambiguous and complex terminology is in use by geologists, chemists, soil scientists, agronomists, and producers. Material mined for its humic-acid content is an extremely variable mixture of base-soluble humic, fulvic, and ulvic acids and their salts, formed during partial or complete decay of organic matter. This decay releases a high-molecular-weight organic material which is darkly colored, partly colloidal, and weakly acidic.

Health and safety indicators help mine sites predict the likelihood of an event, advance initiatives to control risks, and track progress. Although useful to encourage individuals within the mining companies to work together to identify such indicators, executing risk assessments comes with challenges. Specifically, varying or inaccurate perceptions of risk, in addition to trust and buy-in of a risk management system, contribute to inconsistent levels of participation in risk programs. This paper focuses on one trona mine’s experience in the development and implementation of a field-level risk assessment program to help its organization understand and manage risk to an acceptable level. Through a transformational process of ongoing leadership development, support and communication, Solvay Green River fostered a culture grounded in risk assessment, safety interactions and hazard correction. The application of consistent risk assessment tools was critical to create a participatory workforce that not only talks about safety but actively identifies factors that contribute to hazards and potential incidents. In this paper, reflecting on the mine’s previous process of risk-assessment implementation provides examples of likely barriers that sites may encounter when trying to document and manage risks, as well as a variety of mini case examples that showcase how the organization worked through these barriers to facilitate the identification of leading indicators to ultimately reduce incidents.

Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) developed the Meandu Mine in Queensland, Australia in 1983 to supply thermal coal to the adjacent and newly constructed Tarong Power Station (TPS). In designing the mine, RTCA selected Meandu?s best economic reserves for a 27-year life based on station owner Tarong Energy Corp.?s (TECs) estimated life for TPS. That 27-year plan changed dramatically in the early 2000s when TEC approved life extensions to TPS?s four existing units plus construction of a fifth unit. After reviewing Meandu?s remaining reserves, RTCA decided the nearby Kunioon reserve offered the more economic option for maintaining deliveries beyond 2010. Those plans changed again in 2007 when TEC chose to purchase the Meandu Mine and nearby reserves. TEC then selected Thiess Pty Ltd. (Thiess) to continue operating Meandu until the new mine at Kunioon could be developed. After assuming operation of the mine in 2008, Thiess began a review of Meandu?s remaining reserves and found considerable coal available with economic potential. Working jointly with TEC, Thiess performed several analyses on Meandu and subsequently the Kunioon coal reserves. The results changed TEC?s decision from expediting Kunioon?s construction to instead continuing Meandu?s operation for up to 15 additional years.

The Silver Line Phase III Project is the final one mile underground segment of the new Bus Rapid Transit in downtown Boston. The project is expected to significantly reduce existing and anticipated traffic congestion. The twin one-lane tunnels and two station platforms will be built by NATM in Boston saturated soft clay, sand and till layers in proximity to several historical buildings, underpinning two existing cut and cover subway stations and several major utilities in densely built urban area. This paper presents the analysis and design of the NATM tunnels and stations detailing the excavation sequence and support system and various ground improvement and pre-support techniques used in the preliminary and final design of the project

The paper proposes three methods to determine optimum lifetime of a mining project1. The conclusion is that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate (by coincidence). It is also stated that: "The stochastic and option pricing models, in addition to providing a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV (net present value) calculation, showed that the example project has the potential for substantially higher return. By explicitly considering a project's potential risks, the stochastic or option pricing techniques can more accurately describe its probable investment performance." This discussion is intended to demonstrate that: • It is no coincidence that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate. • The stochastic and option pricing models do not provide a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV calculation. • The potential for a substantially higher return is misrepresented. First, a review of investment decision theory in mining is needed. Net present value is the preferred performance measure because of the flexibility offered when comparing various alternatives. However, it presents the following disadvantages: • The discount rate selection is not straightforward. • The NPV obtained represents a deterministic characterization of the variables included in the cash flow calculations, i.e. a single-point estimate.

In Part I of the work, gold and silver were shown to be efficiently extracted from Kupol samples using lead nitrate in a cyanide leach system. In Part II, a comparison of the technical and economic merits of a new technology called CELP (CANMET Enhanced Leaching Process) was made with the cyanidation/AVR(Acidification-Volatilization-Recycling) process using 8 metallurgical variability samples as well as a large composite sample which represented initial two years of Kupol mill feed. The composite sample had 33.4 g/t Au and 289 g/t Ag. The metallurgical demonstrated that the CELP produced very similar gold and silver leach extractions compared to the standard Cyanidation /AVR leach conditions at 1/2 the cyanide concentration (1000 ppm NaCN in CELP vs. 2000 ppm for cyanidation/AVR leach conditions). It was estimated that the total cost per ton, were approximately the same for the two technologies (total cost of the CELP with the use of Merrill-Crowe at $46.48/ton, with cyanidation/AVR at $46.13/ton). However, the implementation of the CELP would eliminate a capital expenditure of approximately $5 million. Eight variability samples used to confirm the previous results showed that on average the gold and silver leach extractions with the CELP and the feasibility leach conditions were very similar for gold extractions, but 4.6% higher for silver extractions compared to the conventional cyanidation. The decision was made to remove AVR cyanide recovery from the Kupol flowsheet and implement the CELP at Kupol. The ability to use conventional leach equipment with the CELP and simplify the flowsheet was also a factor, given the remote location of the Kupol Mine.

Sustainability of energy supplies has been an issue of general interest for a long time. Whilst in the past the continuous productive use of natural commodities was in the fore, its compatibility with the environment and climate and ultimately also social aspects have recently gained more and more attention. Today many discussions focus on the climate compatibility of individual options to act. Fossil fuels, in particular coal and lignite, are generally challenged because coal use makes a significant contribution to global man-made CO2 emissions. The drastic increase in the consumption of fossil fuels is not explained by the fact that coal utilisation technologies are not or cannot be sustainable but rather by the growing world population and the endeavours numerous national economies trying to catch up economically. Coal is the world’s No. 1 fuel and, in the view of many experts, will keep this position also in the foreseeable future. The access to its deposits plays a significant role for the economies of the emerging countries. Consequently the aspects of energy security and economic efficiency need to be considered at eye level with climate compatibility. In Germany, however, the public acceptance of fossil fuels and of large industrial projects is in the focus of attention.
