The feasibility of mining deep phosphate deposits by a borehole mining system was compared with mining by proven conventional techniques. An economic comparison of the borehole mining system with conventional dragline and bucket wheel excavator mining systems was completed at various mining depths and production rates. Hypothetical phosphate deposits, with various overburden thicknesses and reserve tonnages, were defined. Geologic conditions necessary for the application of the borehole system were identified. Discounted cash flow analyses based on derived capital and operating costs were used to generate rates of return and product prices. Borehole mining was found to be more economical where overburden thickness was 46 m (150 ft) or greater. However, at 15- and 30-m (50- and 100-ft) thicknesses, conventional surface mining was more economical. Overburden thickness has a great effect on the economic feasibility of the conventional mining systems but less effect on the economics of borehole mining. Economies of scale are only realized in conventional mining, since larger equipment is used to achieve greater production, whereas increased production from borehole mining is achieved using additional equipment units. A comparison of the environmental effects of borehole and conventional surface mining systems showed that borehole mining is environmentally more desirable.

The hierarchical relationship between three broad kinds of grinding models for a spatially homogeneous, linear, time-invariant batch grinding system are first established. Limiting and asymptotic arguments for arriving at approximate but simpler models are employed in all three cases. These parsimonious models -provide alternate and, in some respects, more incisive and convenient tools for the analyses of grinding processes and simulation of comminution circuits. In the discrete-size, discrete- time class of models, a reduced mill matrix is derived, which is seemingly adequate for those grinding circuits whose identification otherwise is difficult because of limitations on the quantity of data and its quality. In discrete-size, continuous-time types of models, parameter lumping has been employed for obtaining a G-H solution which is quite accurate and exceptionally useful for graphical display of data, model verification, and parameter estimation and simulation. In continuous-size, continuous-time models, a similarity transformation is used for solving the integrodifferential equation of grinding. This solution provides a unified framework for a number of apparently diverse empirical grinding phenomena such as self-preserving behavior of ground particle size distributions and energy laws.

During the induration of fluxed taconite pellets, alkali salts deposit on the grate support bars, causing severe corrosive degradation of these alloys. To determine the source of these deposits and to understand the mechanism by which the salts are conveyed to the grate bars, a study of the reactions between fluxed pellets and combustion gas was carried out. The study focused on the thermodynamics and kinetics of several processes associated with induration; namely, oxidation of magnetite, calcination of flux, and the formation and gaseous transport of various alkali salt species. Both theoretical and experimental techniques were used. It was concluded that the principal source of alkali salt deposits is alkali chlorides, which are present as contaminants in the flux and/or residue from contaminated washwater. The pathway from pellet to grate bar involves the following steps: evaporation of chloride salts within the pellet; diffusion of salt vapor out of the pellet, aided by the outflow of CO2 from calcination of the flux; convective transport by the combustion gas with concurrent (partial) conversion to alkali sulfates by reaction with residual SOX in the combustion gas; and condensation of salts on the grate bars.

Repair of large rotating apparatus such as ball mills is uncommon but under certain circumstances is achievable. This paper describes the successful repair of trunion on a 14 foot diameter by 20 foot long ball mill. Diagrams of the repair are included for visual perspective and non-destructive test procedures are outlined.

Several series of time-instantaneous samples were taken on a cell-by-cell basis in the flotation circuits of the Pinto Valley, AZ copper concentrator. These samples were used to calculate mass flow rates throughout the circuit using standard, deterministic metallurgical formulae and also a variety of more statistically oriented techniques. Because of the magnitude of the errors associated with the individual cell samples, the standard metallurgical formulae are not sufficient. Consequently, it is necessary to utilize some type of statistical technique capable of distributing the individual cell sample errors in such a way so as to provide a physically useful mass balance for the entire circuit. This paper explores the use of linear and least squares programming as one technique to providing credible mass balance calculations. For linear programming this was done by distributing the error using two different criteria involving specific linear programming formulations: least absolute sum minimization (which assumes an underlying double exponential distribution error structure) and minimax (which minimizes the maximum absolute deviation and assumes an underlying rectangular distribution error structure). These results were then compared to the more standard formulation of minimization of the sum of least squares which assumes an underlying normal distribution error structure. The least absolute sum approach was particularly attractive due to its simplicity of use and the ease in which repetitive calculations can be done with no user intervention.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to assist explorationists and entrepreneurs in deciding whether to invest in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs) and, if so, in deciding which LDCs provide the best opportunity. The first decision is difficult in the face of common notions that foreigners are not welcome - only their money; that the best gold deposits were worked out long ago; that even if you survive the mal- aria, and in spite of 51% control by a national partner, you manage to profit from a new discovery, they will tax your operation to death, or worse yet, nationalize it. Close scrutiny of what happened to foreign investors in LDCs during the “Mexicanizationt” of the 1930's through the "Zambianization" of the 1970's shows that many of these concerns are well-founded historically. But the trend of knowledgeable writers over the past decade seems to be away from this gloomy foreboding, and towards a cautious optimism, based on recently perceptible metamorphoses in certain LDCs' conditions and attitudes. If the explorationist or entrepreneur decides to seize on this apparent opportunity, the second decision -- which of these certain LDCs to invest in -- is doubly difficult, because of the formidable tasks of coming up with a rating system to provide rational comparison, and then gathering enough current, reliable information to apply. The Pokorny sulfur deposit is located in the northwest comer of the Delaware basin in the Rustler Springs sulfur district of west Texas. To date, 57 sulfur test wells have been drilled by Addwest Minerals delineating a resource of greater than one million long tons (It) of native sulfur. The deposit, hosted by the Permian Ochoan Castile Formation evaporite sequence, is a sulfur-bearing bioepigenetic limestone replacement of banded bituminous anhydrite. Three distinct mineralized horizons are present that correlate with zones of halite dissolution in the Castile. Sulfur mineralization occurs as hydrocarbon-poor disseminated grains, and as crystalline linings of discontinuous planar voids and large vugs.

Both bolt profile shape and spacing (rib spacing) have been found to influence the bonding capacity of the grouted rock bolt. The bolt surface profile configuration has greater importance to rock bolting in strata reinforcement in mining than the steel rebar used in civil engineering construction. This is because a rock bolt in mining usually is subjected to greater dynamic loading than the steel rebar in civil engineering construction. The increased bonding capacity of a bolt is important when supported ground is either heavily fractured, faulted or the supported ground is of soft formation, typically that of coal measure rocks. Past laboratory studies have identified the bolt profile spacing as of significant relevance to bolt resin rock bonding increase, however, no attempt has been made to determine the optimum spacing between the bolt profiles spacing. Accordingly, a series of laboratory tests were carried out on 22 mm core diameter bolts, commonly used in Australian mines, installed in cylindrical steel sleeve. The study was carried out using both push and pull testing methods. The push test was carried out in 150 mm long sleeves while the pull testing was conducted in 115 mm long sleeves. Profile spacing tested include, 12.5, 25.0, 37.5, and 50 mm lengths. Additional studies undertaken include modelling the profile of the load-displacement data of pull testing. Bolts with a profile spacing of 37.5 mm were found to provide optimum load bearing capacity as compared to other tested profile spacings.

Gold in many ores occurs in sulphides, which, if the gold is finely disseminated, renders the ore refractory and therefore not amenable to the simple process of milling and cyanidation. Traditional methods of treatment of these refractory ores is to produce a sulphidic flotation concentrate which is roasted to form a porous calcine from which the gold is recovered by cyanidation. The roasting process imposes a constraint of a minimum sulphur grade of the concentrate on the flotation plant, which may lead to a lower gold recovery being achieved in the flotation section. Thermal decomposition of the concentrate by roasting means that the sulphur contained therein has to be treated and disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner; and, if arsenopyrite is present in the concentrate the environ- mental aspects will be worsened. It has long been recognized that finer milling of gold-bearing materials improves the liberation of gold, especially when the gold particles are very fine. After extensive laboratory and pilot plant investigations (Liddell, Patents), a suitable mill has been developed for the mining industry by Metprotech, which is capable of producing very fine grinds (down to 90 percent passing one m if necessary). In the course of the investigations it has been found that a large number of gold-bearing materials are amenable to fine milling. A specific advantage that fine milling of sulphidic materials has over oxidative processes such as roasting and bacterial leaching is that the sulphides are not decomposed and there is therefore not a sulphur disposal problem. Furthermore, the milled sulphides can become a future sulphur feed source, and can be reclaimed if necessary. Many concerns have been expressed worldwide regarding the use of diesel equipment in underground mines due to the potential health risks associated with diesel particulate matter (DPM). In assessing the risk to the health of miners and designing control strategies for DPM, it is important to know the concentration of DPM in the working areas of a mine. In some mines, significant stratification occurs due to the characteristics of the diesel exhaust, affecting exposure and the ability to measure DPM concentrations accurately. This study outlines some of the concentration profile data obtained during sampling at three mines where diesels were employed. Mine #1 (a gold mine) employed large openings in which a diesel-powered roof bolter was used. Mines #2 and #3 are both room-and-pillar operations with varying conditions. Mine #2 is an experimental mine where two stationary diesels were utilized for sampling purposes, while Mine #3 is a traditional evaporite operation using two mobile diesel vehicles for section haulage. These field studies indicated that some level of stratification occurred in all the mines, but the stratification was not as pronounced in the case of Mine #2 due to the complex pattern of exhaust emissions generated by the vehicles. The stratification seemed to depend on the distance from the vehicle, the mine air velocity, whether the vehicles were moving or stationary, and whether the exhaust was diluted by equipment design features. The concentration of DPM was generally higher at samplers located near the roof and lower at samplers located near the floor. However, this was not found in all cases. This paper provides conclusions on how knowledge of stratification patterns can be utilized in sampling and control of DPM in mine atmospheres.

One of the advantages of the market¬place, economists believe, is that it automatically generates information which would otherwise be hard to come by. For example, supply and demand signals imply something about private and social sacrifices and benefits. This information is seldom perfect, and can neglect some costs and benefits, but it nevertheless is crucial data. Moreover, marketplaces can also eliminate the need for some information. For example; since market participants are voluntary actors, only those transactions are culminated in which a mutual gain occurs. This eliminates the need for some cost-benefit calculations. A corollary to this standard economic doctrine is that whenever a government or other party supplants a marketplace, it must generate some of the information either lost or newly-needed. (Schultze, 1977) In 1981, following a ten-year moratorium the United States government resumed leasing of publicly-owned coal. When the government designed this program, the goal was to guide the marketplace, rather than merely to respond, as a landlord, to the market's wishes. This goal has been modified somewhat, due both to the changing political climate and to the practical difficulties of implementing so ambitious an undertaking. Nevertheless, during this period of program design and implementation, part of the challenge of creating and using the necessary information fell to the professional modelling fraternity.

Silver sulphide (acanthite) and lead sulphide (galena) dissolve relatively rapidly in FeCl3 media with the formation of elemental sulphur and soluble silver and lead chlorides. Parabolic kinetics are observed, and the leaching rates are controlled by the outward diffusion of the AgCl and PbCl2 reaction products through the constantly thickening elemental sulphur layer formed on the sulphide. Hence, both leaching rates are strongly dependent on those variables which affect the solubility of AgCl or PbCl2 at the reaction interface. The rates therefore increase with increasing temperature and total chloride ion concentration, but decrease in the presence of elevated concentrations of AgCl or PbCl2. By contrast, neither sulphide is significantly attacked by ferric sulphate media, even at high Eh values. Although the reasons for the refractory behaviour of Ag2S in sulphate media remain unknown, the low rate of PbS attack is attributable to the passivating layer of PbSO4 and elemental sulphur formed on the surface of the galena.

A water-balance model with deterministic and stochastic components was developed and used for the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund Site in South Dakota. The model was developed to evaluate the risks of contaminated runoff discharging to surface waters based on assumed water treatment plant (WTP) rates, for different remedial alternatives. The objectives of the modeling were to use a stochastic approach for the analysis of precipitation based on historic records and to make a probabilistic estimation of annual and monthly runoff from disturbed/mining activity areas that now require, or will need, treatment at the WTP, water storage and changes in a major pit, and risk of contaminated water bypass of the WTP to a downstream drainage. Subareas/source areas generating contaminated runoff requiring treatment were delineated. A simple water-balance model was used based on precipitation inputs and evapotranspiration and groundwater losses. Annual and monthly precipitation records for Lead, South Dakota, were used to estimate precipitation at the mine site. A lognormal distribution was estimated for monthly precipitation. The stochastic software package/ Excel add-in "@Risk" was used to generate random monthly precipitation values using a Monte Carlo method based on the distributions. The average annual and monthly distribution of pan and lake evaporation and of groundwater losses were also estimated for the site. Stochastic outputs from the model for the end of each month and year included contaminated runoff requiring treatment, water storage in mine pits and the risk of WTP bypass given different assumed WTP rates. The probability of the time required to dewater the pits was also modeled.

Technology development has played a crucial role in the minerals industry throughout history. The development of new technology allows mankind to produce metals and minerals at progressively lower cost of production in real terms, and therefore at progressively lower prices, improving their availability, accessibility and utilization worldwide. However, the developers of such technology are not guaranteed to reap the benefits from this effort: There is an expectation that technology developers will gain an advantage over their competitors. Is this a short-term benefit that results from a temporary cost or efficiency improvement, or is it a sustainable longer term "edge" that prevails even after metal or mineral price has been eroded by the implementation of a major step change technology? This issue is examined by reference to several case study examples in the copper industry. BACKGROUND The development and adoption of new technology has played a crucial role in the commodity minerals industry throughout history. As new, cost-efficient technologies are commercialized, the cost of production decreases, and this enables lower grade ore to be processed profitably. This in turn increases the availability and supply of the metal or mineral of interest, and ultimately (in a free market environment where the supply- demand balance determines price) inevitably decreases the metal or mineral price. This leads to the question: Why should mining companies invest in (new) technology development if the result is a decrease in the product price? Major societal and industry changes over the last four decades have influenced the management of technology in the minerals industry. From the authors' experiences in both private and public sector R&D, the paper analyzes the range of strategic and structural changes and provides examples of some key technology delivery responses. For those charged with managing technology, the two key challenges facing them over the next decade are (I) moving technology development from a cost focus to a value focus (that is, from "how much long-term research can we afford?" to "identifying and capturing the value created from R&D”) and (2) the recruitment and retention of key talent. THE NEED TO ADAPT "Change is slow and gradual. It requires hard work, a bit of luck, a fair amount of self- sacrifice, and a lot of patience (Greene 1998)." Since the 1960s the world has changed and the minerals industry has had to adapt to the changing circumstances. In the '60s, minerals were there to be discovered and fortunes to be made; in Australia, the World War I1 embargo on exporting iron ore was lifted and the Western Australian iron-ore boom commenced, to be followed by the exploitation of the Darling Range bauxites; copper, lead, zinc and nickel were discovered and mines developed. The Australian dollar was worth US$1.11 whereas today it is around US$0.65. The oil crisis of 1976 sharpened focus on the sensitivity of the minerals industry on energy costs. During the early 1960's, a method was developed for refining sand from the Arkansas River to produce a feldspathic product that was proposed for use in making colorless glass. Because of the need for chemical uniformity, a cooperating glass manufacturer specified certain ranges of percentages for each chemical constituent of the sand. These specifications were met by fulfilling the single requirement that alumina vary by no more than 20.1 percent from the specified value. This translated to a total variation of only about 1 percent in the feldspar content of the mixed quartz-feldspar products. Because the feldspar was lighter than the quartz, the average density of refined sand varied depending on composition. Densities, determined to five significant figures, of several samples were correlated with their chemical analyses, and the correlation could then be used with density determinations to more reliably indicate compositions than by chemical analyses only. The effects of several variables on the composition of refined sands were studied. There was a regular variation in the proportion of feldspar with screen size. A series of samples with their natural size distributions were more nearly uniform in composition than the same sands after screening and recombination. The screening and recombination process was done so that the sands had identical size distributions. Variations in the refining showed little effect on composition. A pile of flow-back sand from a construction sand washer was found to be severely segregated. However, samples taken from many points in the river near the sand plant and from the flow-back discharge pipe over several weeks very nearly met the uniformity specification. If care was taken to avoid segregation either before or during processing, it should be possible to meet the uniformity specifications for a feldspathic glass sand.

The set of discoveries for a mining district or camp is a reflection of the exploration history. In the western Abitibi greenstone belt of Ontario, future exploration can be guided by a study of statistical trends of known gold deposits. In this area simple trends indicate a strong decrease in the contained quantity of gold discovered through time. Much of this decrease is attributed not to falling mining grades but to smaller tonnages of ore. A plot of the largest discovery in each ten year time period suggests that deposit discoverability is following a size-biased sampling model. Cumulative ounces of discovered gold indicate that an asymptotic value has been reached where exploration is not expected to add significantly to known reserves. This is substantiated by a downward trend in the exploration success ratio of the number of new deposits discovered versus the number of new mineral prospects. The set of discovered deposits reflects a non-random sampling process where size- biased modeling suggests that the largest deposits will be discovered early in the exploration effort. It is the exceptionally large deposit contributing to the observed size-biased distribution. Although this pattern is observed for the western Abitibi the model is complicated by recent, large reserve additions that are attributed to the original discovery. There is present in this area a subtle learning process in exploration leading up to the largest discovery. For comparison a learning model was estimated using cumulative size of discovery per unit of time. This model yielded results consistent with the statistical trends and is thought to be a superior forecast of future discoveries in this region.

A microbiological flotation system that facilitates the removal of pyritic sulfurfrom coal is reported. The chemoautotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is utilized as a pyrite-selective biological surfactant that augments the flotation-mediated rejection of pyritic sulfur. The bacteria were produced by continuous cultivation in 50-L tanks, where it was possible to produce 3.8 x 1012 cells/day when the dilution rate was optimal and the pH was 1.6, a condition that prevented ferric precipitation. Prior to flotation, the bacteria were mixed with coal, which allowed cells to selectively adhere to the pyrite. The adherence of bacteria made the pyrite surfaces more hydrophilic, which facilitated separation by increasing the tendency of pyrite to sink, while the hydrophobic coal floated. When a synthetic coal/pyrite mixture (10.1 % sulfur) was subjected to microbial flotation, the level of sulfur rejection was stable during the entire period of operation (i.e., one hour). In the absence of bacteria, flotation reduced the sulfur content of a coal/pyrite mixture to within the range of 6.7% to 7.4%, with the combustible recoveries ranging from 93.9% to 99.0%. In the presence of bacteria, the sulfur content of cleaned coal was in the range of 1.3% to 1.4%, with the combustible recoveries ranging from 80.8% to 86.3%. Bacterial activity accounted for 57% of the total sulfur rejected through flotation. The desulfurization capacity of the system was further confirmed by testing it with run-of-mine coal. The pyritic sulfur content was reduced from 2.9% in the feed coal to around 1.2% in the froth product, while 80% of the combustible recovery was retained. Microbial flotation removed 60% of the pyritic sulfur from the feed. These findings demonstrated that micro¬bial flotation could be utilized for the removal of pyritic sulfur from coal in a semicontinuous system.

If you have ever driven on the Autobahns of Western Germany, you are well acquainted with the "fast lane." There is no speed limit; there are only two lanes in the direction you are going, and if you choose to drive in the fast lane, you had better be prepared to drive faster than anyone or someone will tailgate you with a constant screeching horn until you move to the "slow lane." The prize for this mastery of the fast lane is some kind of a "macho" feeling and getting to your destination sooner than your competitor. This has some comparisons with today Is liquid-sol id separation. We've certainly had our moments in the fast lane but we've also had other countries forcing us into the slow lane at times. It can be very embarassing when someone almost runs over your back and then shakes a fist at you as you shakily scatter to the much slower and overcrowded lane. Because of necessity, there will be many new improvements and added requirements in the next decades into the 21st century and beyond. Those countries and industries that can maintain the pace in the fast lane will be successful while the others may well be relegated to the non-competitive lane. Before considering what will be the challenges in the future for competitive liquid-sol id separation performance, it would be wise to review progress over the past forty years in this area. The author has to admit his ancient age and believes he can act as an evaluator of these many advances. The regional geological setting and nature of the serpentinized ultramafic rocks are described. It is postulated that lateritization started in Miocene time. Repeated uplifts led to at least four physiographic cycles and to the development of a mature lateritic soil profile. Complete profiles are subdivided from top to bottom as follows: Zone A - chocolate-brown limonite; Zone B - ochre-brown limonite; Zone C - soft serpentine; Zone D - hard serpentine; Zone E - serpentinized peridotite; Zone F - ultramafic rock. Zones A and F rarely attain ore grade. Canga is conspicuously absent. Rocky ore of Zones D and E amounts to 40%, limonite ore of Zone B to 25% of total ore reserves. Nickeliferous serpentine is the major crystalline phase in Zone C. In this zone and deeper, crystalline quartz occurs, particularly in fracture zones where nickeliferous cryptocrystalline quartz is of ten accompanied by garnierite.
