Although secondary-recovery methods have not been applied widely in California, it is apparent that increasing attention and effort must be given to this phase of recovery if the State is to maintain its high rank as a petroleum producer. Steadily increasing demands for petroleum products and decreasing rates of discovery of new oil fields and rapid depletion of existing reserves emphasize the prospect of an adverse situation of supply and demand in the not-far-distant future. If the trend of discoveries becomes more favorable or if more complete economic recovery of the oil in place can be obtained by secondary recovery, this situation can be averted. Not only are these reserves of economic importance to the petroleum industry to meet increasing market demands, but economic reclamation of such reserves is an important conservation measure, which will prolong the productive life of many fields" Accordingly, progressive operators in California are alert to the possibilities of secondary recovery and have done much to implement such operations wherever feasible. Most of the operations are of the pressure-maintenance type} in which the reservoir pressure is maintained or partly maintained by injecting natural gas to increase oil recovery. The possibilities of recovering additional oil from stripper fields by gas drive and water flooding (including water disposal) also are being tested in experimental field projects. Table 1 summarizes gas and water-injection projects in California.

"The Highland Uranium Project (HUP) is located approximately sixty miles northeast of Casper, Wyoming and is owned and operated by Power Resources, Inc. (PRI). With an annual production of680 tonnes (1.5 million lbs) U308, HUP is one of the largest uranium producers by in-situ leach (ISL) in the western world. Uranium is currently produced from four wellfields with a total flow rate of approximately 1,135 m3/hr (5,000 gpm). The carbonate leach solutions are processed by anion ion exchange at two satellite facilities located in close proximity to the wellfields. The loaded resin is transported by truck to a central processing facility for elution of the uranium. Uranium in the pregnant eluant is precipitated and washed prior to calcining.Wastewater from the satellite facilities is treated and used for irrigation at a Land Application Facility. The wastewater generated at the central processing facility is injected into a 2,750 m (9,000 ft) deep waste disposal well.When economical mining of the orebodies is complete, restoration of the groundwater is initiated. There are currently two wellfields at HUP undergoing ground water restoration. Phase I restoration consists of removal of the carbonate leach solution from the ore body. Phase II includes treating the withdrawn fluid with reverse osmosis and reinjection of the permeate into perimeter wells.Future plans include construction of additional satellite facilities at the Gas Hills Project and other economical deposits located within 240 km (150 mi) of HUP. The capacity of the central processing facility will be increased to 1,815 tonnes (4 million lbs) U308 per year by late 1999."

"AQUILA Mining Systems Ltd. is a Canadian company that designs and develops monitoring, control and navigation systems for the surface and underground mining industries. In 1992, AQUILA Mining Systems began the development of technology for monitoring, controlling and positioning mobile mining equipment. In 1993, AQUILA completed its first field test with GPS receivers onboard ablasthole drill, and thus demonstrated the viability and strategic relevance of this technology in surface mining. Since then, AQUILA has installed GPS-based technology on drills and shovels in several Canadian mines. This paper will review the development of these systems and discussthe benefits the mining industry could realise through their production implementation."

In this paper, we review the equations needed to construct an ion exchange column model. These models contain three major components: 1) a differential material balance around the colunm, 2) a differential material balance around an ion exchange particle, and 3) a constitutive equation for diffusive flux We then examine the ability of a fairly simple mathematical model to predict ion exchange column experimental data. This model contains the traditional absorption theory equations and is used to predict the behavior of a column filled with a hydrous crystalline silico-titanate and which is removing trace amounts of Cs+ from a high pH, complex electrolyte solution. Finally, we propose replacing Fick's law with the Nernst-Planck equation as the constitutive equation for diffusive flux We use a Nernst-Planck type model to predict batch experimental data, then evaluate it by comparing it's ability to predict experimental data to that of a more traditional Fick's law type model? The data from this comparison suggests that the Nemst-Planck type model yields better results.

Concentrator plants intake the ore from the mine and produce concentrates by extracting valuable minerals in a succession of process steps. Controlling the extraction process and detecting changes in the process requires updated information on a minute basis. Moreover, due to economical reasons, one must also collect metallurgical samples on a daily basis for monthly reporting.In this paper, we present how slurry samplers were installed in a Cu-Ni flotation plant to accomplish the aforementioned tasks. An on-stream elemental analyser at the plant is used for flotation process control by taking samples from selected process streams. Two process streams, the flotation feed and tail, are also equipped with metallurgical samplers. The metallurgical samplers were designed to have low head loss, be robust and easy to maintain and to collect slurry samples in a reliable way for the metallurgical accounting.Samples were collected by different sampler types and we discuss the uncertainty arising from sampling in the assays. Variographic analysis was carried out on the process data in order to find periodic components in the process, and estimate the correct number of shift sample increments and measurement error components. The metallurgical samplers were proven to be reliable devices with zero downtime and no sanding issues in the main process flows. In addition, we show that the tail measurement is the most important one for the plant recovery calculation, which emphasises the importance of the sampling accuracy in the tail stream.CITATION:Lohilahti, J, Korpela, T, Minkkinen, P and McPherson, B, 2014. "Global niobium production is currently dominated by three operating mines, Araxá and Catalão in Brazil, and Niobec in Canada. Although over 90% of the world’s niobium is mined and processed in Brazil, a number of high grade niobium deposits exist worldwide. The advancement of these deposits depends largely on the development of operable beneficiation flowsheets. Pyrochlore, the primary niobium bearing mineral, is typically upgraded by flotation with amine collectors at acidic pH, and often includes a reverse gangue flotation stage prior to pyrochlore flotation. Challenges related to the flotation of niobium ores include complicated flowsheets which require pulp pH adjustment from alkaline to highly acidic conditions, difficulty recovering fine grained pyrochlore, producing concentrates that meet specifications, and minimizing the losses to reverse pre-flotation gangue concentrates, slimes, and tailings. The specific flotation challenges associated with different niobium ores are discussed. In some cases, the use of alternate flotation reagents and flowsheets are required to achieve reasonable gangue rejection and maximize recovery, particularly of very fine pyrochlore grains.INTRODUCTIONNiobium is a transition metal primarily found in the oxide minerals pyrochlore (Ca,Na)2Nb2O6(OH,F) and columbite (Fe,Mn)Nb2O6. After physical upgrading, pyrochlore is converted into a ferroniobium product which is largely used in the production of high strength low-alloy steel. Today’s niobium market is dominated by the Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração, whose Araxá operation produces over 80% of the world’s niobium. There are two smaller operations, Niobec in Canada, and Catalão in Brazil, which account for the remaining production (U.S. Geological Survey, 2013).A number of niobium deposits exist globally, their advancement dependent on the development of operable beneficiation flowsheets. Pyrochlore, the predominant niobium bearing mineral, is commonly upgraded by flotation with cationic amine collectors in acidic pulp conditions. However, many niobium ores do not respond to this typical flowsheet because they are either highly refractory or niobium deports to other minerals such as columbite, ilmenite and rutile, which are not as responsive to this reagent scheme (Bulatovic, 2010). Other reagents, such as alkyl hydroxamic acid, have been studied extensively and while promising, are not without their own inherent issues including lack of selectivity over iron oxide minerals, and high addition rates (Ni & Liu, 2012; Gorlovskii, Eropkiny, Koval, Strelstin, Khobotova, & Shtchukina, 1968; Gorlovskii, Khobatova, & Shtchukina, 1966).It is the aim of this report to highlight the challenges associated with the physical upgrading of niobium minerals through examination of the flotation behavior of two different ore systems. In order to overcome these challenges it is important to thoroughly understand the limitations of typical flowsheets/reagent schemes currently employed in operation."

This paper reviews the gold mining history and recent exploration activities on a number of beaches in the Catlins area of coastal South Otago. Past mining history and recent sampling indicate the presence of economically significant concentrations of placer gold, as well as anomalous PGM, and various heavy mineral species. A local source for this placer mineralisation is considered a strong possibility, along with a contribution from the Waiau River catchment via longshore drift. Blacksand beds in Jurassic sandstones of the Southland Synclinorium may represent this local source of mineralisation on the modern beaches. The possibility of placer mineralisation extending onto the inner continental shelf is also considered. Further exploratory work is justified, both for in situ Jurassic blacksand deposits, and to delineate mineralisation in the modern beach and inner shelf environment.

This report presents the results of an investigation by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Colorado, on the yields and properties of oils produced from oil shale, lignite and subbituminous coal using the standard assay method developed by the Bureau for oil-shale testing,. The purpose of this work, which is part of the general study of oil shales being conducted by the Bureau of Mines and cooperating agencies, was to obtain information on the amount and character of the yield of crude oil or tar from different typical oil shales, the yield of light oil or naptha that might be suitable for use in motor fuels, and other products of shale oil. As the west has large resources both of oil shale and low-grade non-coking coals, it is of interest to know the relative yields of tars, light oils, and combustible gases that can be produced from these coals when retorted under conditions similar to those suited for oil-shale retorting. Source of Samples The coal samples were obtained from deposits on or adjacent to the public lands in the States of the Rocky Mountain region. Many of the mines sampled are operating under Government leases or permits. The number of coal samples secured from the various states are: Colorado, 6; Montana, 9; north Dakota, 6; New Mexico. 1; South Dakota, 1; Wyoming, 9. Of these samples, 14 were lignite coal, 16 subbituminous coal, and a bituminous coal. The standard channel method of the Bureau of Mines was used for sampling. Coal samples received at the Boulder Office weighed about twelve pounds each, and duplicate samples were sent to the Pittsburgh Station for proximate and ultimate analyses. The origin of the samples and description of the deposits are given in Table 1.

The Oyu Tolgoi porphyry gold and copper project is located in the south Gobi region of Mongolia. The Ivanhoe Mines project has the potential to become a long-life copper and gold producer that could rank among the largest in the world. There are five deposits which cover a strike length in excess of 6.5 km, from south to north they are named South Oyu, Southwest Oyu, Central Oyu, Hugo South and Hugo North. The first three, collectively known as the Southern Oyu deposits, are planned to be mined by open pits, whilst extraction of the deeper Hugo deposits is planned using block caving techniques. The pits will have diameters of approximately 1000m and a maximum depth of 550m. The geological environment consists of a sequence of porphyritic augite basalt, dacitic tuffs and sedimentary rocks that have been intruded by several generations of porphyritic quartz monzodiorite and numerous post mineralization dykes. Several major faults cut through the southern deposits juxtaposing the relative position of the stratigraphy. The geotechnical investigation for the Oyu Tolgoi Open Pits was conducted in three distinct phases of increasing complexity: scoping study; advanced scoping study and feasibility study. Each phase consisted of data collection, interpretation and analysis designed to progressively develop 3D geotechnical domaining for the empirical, structural and numerical evaluations. The development of the geotechnical design parameters for these green fields open pits posed many technical challenges, brought about by the conditions associated with a lithologically and structurally complex environment. The design work focused on the optimization of the pit geometry to conform to equipment selection and blasting characteristics. Limiting bench stack heights were derived from the influence of major structures. The overall slope angles in each pit sector were developed around the requirement for haulage ramps and geotechnical berms. This paper describes each of these aspects and the methodology used to address the integration of the geotechnical characteristics with the mining environment.

The invention of the traditional belt and idler conveyor system is attributed to Thomas Robins in 1892. This basic concept, ubiquitous in most mining operations, has not changed markedly in 125 years and still suffers from five forms of energy losses. Firstly, Wheeler, Roberts and Jones (2004) showed that indentation rolling losses, a consequence of the indentation a roller inflicts on the belt, consume 60 per cent of all energy. Secondly, Wheeler (2006) explained that bulk solid flexure resistance resulting from material interaction and movement absorbs 20 per cent. The remaining energy is lost by idler rotating resistance (5 per cent), belt flexure resistance (5 per cent) and secondary resistances (10 per cent).Traditional conveyor systems are continuous as opposed to batch systems, implying both positive and negative features. On one hand, continuous systems have high availability (available infers ‘ready to run’), but, on the other, utilisation of availability is often low; for example, when a conveyor is running empty or below capacity. This converts into reduced system OEE (overall effective efficiency). Many attempts have been made to mitigate energy losses and low OEE issues, including development of rail-based systems. The key drawbacks have been higher capital cost, low flexibility, poor availability and lack of market acceptance.A recent conceptual development known as the ‘autonomous rail conveyor’ (ARC) promises to address issues of energy loss and poor availability and provide increased flexibility by offering solutions for difficult applications. The ARC uses a series of interconnected skeletal bogies covered with a conventional conveyor belt as a load bed running on relocatable light rail. The bogeys have two axles, each driven by integrated variable speed-geared motor and brake systems, and are connected to previous/next bogeys by specialised couplers. Power is provided by a generator (located in a dedicated bogey) and ‘daisy chain’ plug in cables. Centralised redundant control is provided at a preferred point. Although the system is batch in nature, the number of carriages and trains is flexible, meaning that the system is effectively continuous. Loading is achieved by feeding the ARC from a perpendicularly oriented apron feeder, while material off-loading is accomplished by a twist-dump operation in which the belt is twisted through an angle of 50° below the horizontal, causing material to flow from the belt into a receiving conveyor.The ARC system can run multiple trains over any distance, although benefits are more significant in distances of over two kilometres. Capital and operating costs are predicted to be lower than competitive products, with planned maintenance being simple to perform.CITATION:Graham, T, 2017. The geotechnical construction industry generally considers soil mixing to be defined as an in situ ground improvement or treatment method by which a dry or wet reagent is introduced into the ground and is blended with the soil by mechanical or rotary mixing tools. This results in relatively homogenous mixtures whose engineering properties are improved and are greater than the soil properties before mixing. Reagents usually include cement, but may also include processed clay such as bentonite, when a reduction in hydraulic conductivity is desired, or other proprietary chemicals when chemical stabilization is the objective. Mixing may be either shallow or deep. Shallow Mixing is the term arbitrarily used for treatment of soils within the upper 30 feet; Deep Mixing denotes treatment below 30 feet to the depth limits of the equipment. Mixing equipment may consist of single or multiple-shaft tools having cutting and mixing blades of many different configurations. To avoid using proprietary nomenclature, reference to Shallow Mixing Methods (SMM) and Deep Mixing Methods (DMM) are the preferred terms. Although originally developed and patented in the United States in 1956, in situ construction using various soil mixing methods is more prevalent in Japan and the Scandinavian countries. Reintroduced into the United States from Japan in 1986 for ground improvement and liquefaction mitigation at Jackson Lake Dam, Wyoming, acceptance of soil mixing methods has been gradual but slow. Development during 1942 led to the discovery of 26 new fields in the Texas Gulf Coast, as compared with 27 during 1941. Of these, 19 are classed as oil fields, 4 distillate fields, and 3 gas fields. Production from the new fields amounted to 614,467 bbl. to October 1942. Producing Sections.—Discoveries in I942, compared with the previous two years, classified by producing formations, are shown in the following table: It is interesting to note the increase in Wilcox discoveries due to the extensive geophysical campaign that has been con. ducted since 1940. Drilling.—During the year 688 wells were drilled, of which 574 produced oil or gas and 114 were dry. This represents a considerable decline in activity over the previous year, when 1405 wells were drilled in the area, of which 1081 were producers and 324 failures. Jackson County continued to hold the lead, with 222 wells completed. Production.—-Despite curtailed drilling, production amounted to 118,009,451 bbl. for 1942, indicating a slight increase over the 113,726,893 bbl. produced during 1941. The statistics in Tables I and 2 include condensate and distillate as oil production, because many Gulf Coast fields produce oils with a wide variation of specific gravities, all of which are commingled in pipe lines. Table 3 shows by counties most of the activities referred to. The number of wells drilled includes only field wells; not wildcats. Outstanding Fields of 1942 The Texas Gulf Coast covered in this report has 270 more or less active oil and gas fields, including the new discoveries of 1942. Of these the most outstanding from the standpoint of production are listed in Table 4. Each of these fields produced one million barrels or more during 1942. Some of the fields where new extensions are occasionally referred to as separate fields, such as West Columbia and New West Columbia, or Thompson and South Thompson, are combined to give a more accurate outline. Two interesting facts may be noted from this list of some 26 oil fields: (I) that the Lolita field, Jackson County, is the only discovery since 1938 to produce more than one million barrels annually, although there have been 79 discoveries since Jan. I, 1940; (2) that 20 of these 26 fields produce from the Frio. New Fields ALief, Harris County.—Pure Oil Company's No. I Mike Albanese was drilled to 8637 ft. in Cook Mountain shale. The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits provides plant staff with a new means to improve circuit performance. However, successful execution of a plant processing performance improvement project, with verifiable improvements, requires a significant number of accompanying steps beyond using this equation. In order to identify and articulate all these steps, a study was undertaken with the metallurgical staff from two milling operations and process application specialists from a grinding media manufacturing company. “Task analysis” of improving plant grinding performance was carried out. This analysis identified the required steps, and ultimately yielded a “Plant Grinding Circuit Processing Performance Management/ Improvement System.

S.L. Barua and Y.C. Kim M. Armstrong's paper is very interesting and can be regarded as a pioneering work of applying geostatistics on washed coal. The density levels used in her study are uniformly spaced, which facilitated curve fitting through a proper experimental design. Most of the existing coal washing plants in the US, however, gather washability data at non-uniform intervals which, in turn, affects the goodness of curve fitting. We would like to emphasize the importance of having a proper experimental design, if a similar geostatistical application is to be conducted on washed coal. We, at the University of Arizona, tried the variogram on recovery (Kim, Barua, and Baafi, 1982, SME preprint 82-143) which showed a similar pattern as Fig. 4 of Armstrong's paper. In both cases, the first experimental variogram value is invariably and inexplicably higher than the second variogram value. Although Armstrong ignores the first point because of "small number of sample points," we did not do so because there were 17 sample pairs. As a consequence, we concluded that the obtained experimental variogram was unsatisfactory and that further research is warranted. In other words, this disagreement in variogram interpretation between M. Armstrong and the University of Arizona begs the question whether the experimental variogram of Fig. 4 truly reflects the spatial correlation in washed coal, assuming there is such a correlation. Finally, we wish that Armstrong could have done a similar study on clean sulfur, which is a vital interest to the coal mines in the US. Her implied remark on sulfur in the concluding section of the paper may turn out to be incorrect because our experimental variograms on clean sulfur at different density levels were even less satisfactory than those on recovery.

The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 2.6 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore annually from sub level open stopes of which approximately 40% comes from the narrow Racecourse orebodies below 15 level.Geologically the stoping environment is complicated by highly fissile shale hangingwalls and below 17 level by a high stress regime.The realization that major hangingwall failures and generally poor ground conditions could lead to serious dilution problems, and ultimately production shortfalls, prompted investigations into the use of low strength explosives.

Historically, the surface subsidence over underground coal mines has been predicted using empirical profile or influence functions which have little or no connection to the actual mechanics of the subsidence- Without a mechanistic basis, establishing the exact site-specific parameters to use in these empirical methods has been problematic. A practical subsidence predictive method based on mechanics has the appealing capability of allowing the determination of site-specific parameters from fundamental properties of the overburden with minimal field calibration work. This paper presents a case study where a mechanics-based, boundary-element program is used to calculate the surface subsidence associated with several panels of a Northern Appalachian longwall coal mine. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, and it incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin seam or vein type deposits. In this paper. the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at three longwalls. The subsidence results from the model are compared with field measurements and analyzed The results from the case study in this paper demonstrate that the laminated model with calibrated properties can easily provide fairly accurate subsidence predictions and is fairly flexible for fitting measured subsidence. However, additional subsidence predictive case studies are recommended in order to ultimately evaluate the potential of the laminated overburden model for practical subsidence prediction

Continuous operating performance and high profit is one of the major concerns in the mining industry. Information systems are expected to reinforce and enable conformance to these requirements. The companion efforts of business management and production information systems press for tighter integration to avoid over-laps, multiple instances of similar data, and expensive maintenance of databases. Implementation of advanced intelligent systems throughout a mine operation can reduce costs, optimize investment and create a shorter payback via conversion of the data accumulated by field and process devices into information, and subsequently, into decisions. However, in order to harness the potential power inherent in these intelligent devices, adequate and flexible modular knowledge-based solutions are required. Fortunately, there has been at least one such practical response to this challenge, namely the ABB IndustrialIT portfolio. With these tools in place, production efficiency is reached via integration of process, production, and quality information. Moreover, they permit immediate detection and remedial action to changes to process and boundary condition variables. Finally, using advanced optimization techniques supported by dedicated mathematical models, they allow for economic process optimization (process set points and coordination thereof, energy management, production planning, energy supply contract optimization, etc) of the plant as a whole.

This report describes a process for quickly developing information that is useful for skills training. The process is called job training analysis (JTA). Its main use is to structure skills training at the jobsite. JTA supports structured skills training by identifying the job duties, tasks, and steps and the reasons why those job components are important. The outcome of the JTA process is a worksheet—a training outline based on the knowledge and expertise of experienced workers. Time invested in developing a JTA will result in significantly more time saved when it is used appropriately by skilled trainers. Like a roadmap, JTA saves time and energy. Experimental work at several mine sites helped document, refine, and validate the JTA process. JTAs for two mining jobs—roof bolting and lift truck operation—at two different mine sites are used to illustrate some of the concepts and the specific JTA process described in this report. The work at these two sites was influenced by cooperative work between the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at several other mine sites and prior collaborative work with the U.S. Navy. The mining JTA process is grounded within the military research on the design of instructional systems. MSHA and NIOSH worked to simplify and apply the military training development model for mining industry use through collaborative work at several mine sites. The JTA process involves three activities: (1) planning, (2) a 1- to 3-day workshop where the JTA is developed using facilitated work with subject-matter experts, and (3) followup. Guidelines and considerations for each of these activities are included. Results indicate that the JTA process has been well received and valued by mining industry participants. It blends aspects of health and safety, production, maintenance, and crew coordination.
