Screening by centrifugal force is a unique subject, for all vibrating screens, with but one exception, depend on gravity alone to pass material through a sizing mesh or screen cloth. Centrifugal screening is one of the greatest advancements made in screening since the development of vibrating screens. It makes possible sizing in a range previously im-practical by mechanical methods. The centrifugal screen is specially designed for fine sizing from No. 4 separations to finer than No. 100 separations. Centrifugal force provides a positive control of factors that make fine particle separation practical and effective as opposed to gravity which is a fixed force acting only in a fixed direction, The centrifugal screen provides a control of the force of material against the screening surface, and also controls the distance of departure of the material from the surface and its rate of return. The centrifugal screen has a rotating drum that becomes a natural fan blowing air outward through the material being screened and carrying float dust and fines through the apertures with it. Screening by centrifugal force is an unique subject, for with the exception of only one vibrating screen presently on the market, all vibrating screens depend upon gravity to pass material through a sizing mesh or screen cloth. This one screen that sizes by centrifugal force and utilizes gravity only to convey material along the screen, is the Symons V-Screen. The requirements of the industrial minerals industry to meet ever-increasing stringent fine sizing specifications by a practical mechanical method accentuates the weakness of gravity, a fixed force acting in a fixed direction, as a prime force for fine sizing. It was apparent a force other than gravity was needed. This led to the development of a centrifugal screen to meet modern demands for practical fine sizing operations. Gyratory-type screens in use today were originally designed in a day when a 1/4-in. separation was normally considered fine sizing and 1/8-in. separations were extremely fine sizing. Although gyratory-type screens are sometimes used for separating below 1/8-in., they are not practical screens for this purpose. They were not designed to do this type of work. A growing demand for a practical means of making positive mechanical separations in a range of from 1/8 in. downward led to the development of the vibrating screen. THE Northwestern Pennsylvania Oil Producers Association and the United States Geological Survey have cooperated in conducting a pre-liminary study of the character of the flood waters, the relationship of changes in concentration of the salts dissolved in these waters to ultimate flood-oil production, and the original association of oil and water in the Bradford field. Bradford has long been recognized as a dry-sand field. As a matter of fact, there had been little information available on the oil-field waters of northern Pennsylvania until this investigation was undertaken. THE BRADFORD SAND Practically all of the oil produced in the Bradford field comes from one horizon, generally known as the Third, or Bradford, sand. Originally, it was believed that the Bradford sand was equivalent to the Third sand of Venango County, Pennsylvania and the name "Third" unfortunately still persists, although shortly after the discovery of the Bradford pool Carll1 determined that there was a stratigraphic interval of approximately ;000 ft. between the two horizons. The Bradford sand, although varying considerably in thickness and lithology within local areas, is persistent throughout the field. It is of marine origin and, upon both paleontologi-cal and stratigraphic evidence, is regarded as a basal member of the Chemung formation.

There was a decline in the Italian oil production in 1933 and also in the footage drilled. A total of about 194,500 bbl. of crude oil was produced in the Emilia district of northern Italy from the same fields in production as in 1932. New drilling to the extent of 80,700 ft. failed to find new production to compensate for the decline in old wells, and no new fields were discovered in spite of an active exploration campaign by the government-owned company A.G.I.P., which has just completed the first year of a five-year exploration program. This company drilled a total of about 33,000 ft. The majority of its tests were drilled in the Po Valley upon locations selected by geophysical methods. This company is changing over to the rotary system for all future wells. It produced about 16,600 bbl. of oil from wells near Salsomaggiore and in the Po Valley. The Petroli d'Italia, which operates the old fields of Montechino, Valleja and Gratera south of Piacenza, has been doing normal development drilling in the endeavor to extend its present fields. Also it was drilling two exploration wells in the Torino district. It drilled a total of about 13,930 ft. and produced approximately 12,645 bbl. of very high-grade oil (specific gravity about 0.765). The Societa Petrolifera Italiana was occupied chiefly in exploratory drilling in the endeavor to extend its producing fields at Salsomaggiore and at Vallezza, south of Parma. It was also drilling one exploration well at Rile dell7Olio near Voghera on the line Milan-Genoa. It drilled a total of 33,849 ft. and obtained a production from its two fields of 165,273 bbl. It also produced 123,220 gal. of casinghead gasoline from Vallezza field absorption plant.

INTRODUCTION Almost seventy-five years ago problems in the recovery of sulfides from then designated slime fractions were the impetus for the development of flotation. The fall-off in recovery by gravity methods below about 200-mesh, and the shift from coarser vein deposits to more disseminated ores, particularly for copper, provided the background for flotation's rapid advances. Although the ensuing years have witnessed major improvments both in flotation reagents and in flotation machines, many problems are still with us. And since, with the exception of the unique leaching of chalcocite ores at Inspiration, flotation is still the exclusive mainstay for primary recovery of all base metal sulfides, the solution of these problems as they arise is vital to the well-being of the mining industry. Before considering the problems themselves, it will be useful to review the current status of sulfide flotation in the United States. The last comprehensive survey by the Bureau of Mines in 1975 (1) showed sulfide ore tonnages treated from 1960 to 1975 as summarized in Table 1; Table 2 gives similar data for the flotation of all non-sulfide ores. Noteworthy is the leveling off in sulfide ore tonnages in 1970-1975, with a probable further decline in the past three years, and the sharp drop in the number of plants floating sulfide ores. In contrast, the tonnages of non-sulfide ores floated, as well as the number of individual plants, has continued to increase. In spite of these trends, two-thirds of the total tonnage of the ores to which flotation is applied is still represented by sulfides. Average grades of sulfide ores in 1975 were: about 0.6 percent for copper; near 5 percent for lead; and near 3 percent for zinc. Recoveries averaged in the low 80's for copper; about 95 percent for

In a recent paper read before the Institute on this subject, Mr. G. C. Stone advances the theory that the precipitate obtained in Williams's volumetric process,* by treating the boiling nitric acid solution of a manganese salt with potassic chlorate., is not pure MnO2, but approximates more closely to the composition 10Mn02+Mn0. As the value of the process and the accuracy of our results mould depend on whether this was the fact or not, it has seemed to me, and to my associates, Messrs. Beebe and Colly, that it would be of importance to ascertain the composition of this precipitate, and to that end the following series of experiments has been undertaken. These experiments have all been based on the considerations: 1. That potassic permanganate has an oxidizing power equivalent to five atoms of oxygen for every two of manganese : K2Mn2O8 = K2O.2MnO.O5. 2. That the same amount of manganese in the state of binoxide has an oxidizing power equivalent to two atoms of oxygen : 2MnO2 = 2MnO.O2. If, then, we take a solution of permanganate of unknown strength, and reduce it to binoxide, the oxidizing power of the binoxide formed will be equal to that of two-fifths the quantity of the permanganate solution originally taken. While, if the precipitate obtained should not be binoxide, but an indefinite or definite mixture of bin- and mon- oxides, then, from its equivalent oxidizing power, we can calculate its composition. The analyses were conducted in the following manner. The amount of permanganate taken was decomposed with hydrochloric acid, and concentrated to expel the excess of water. Sufficient excess of nitric acid was now added, and the solution was boiled until all the hydrochloric acid was destroyed. W. Hofmann, J. Ziegler, and H. Hanemann—Having dealt with the same alloys in the winter 1941 to 1942, we want to give a short report on the generating of the hexagonal kappa phase by deforming the supersaturated alpha phase, which we then observed. This work was delivered as a Doctor of Engineering dissertation to the Technical University of Berlin by J. Ziegler in 1942. It still exists in two copies, somewhat damaged, a brief publication of it having been issued in Fiat-Review. Our work was started from the alloy Tombasil with 4.5 to 5 pct Si, 14.5 to 14 pct Zn, the rest Cu. Torpedo propellers were die cast from this alloy in Germany during the war. In order to improve this alloy, annealing was tried. By this treatment the alloy became at the same time harder and more brittle. A further research of this process was made in the Got-tingen University30 and the "Institut fÜr Metallkunde" of the Technical University of Berlin. It soon was apparent that the Cu-Si diagram at our disposal15,31,32 would not fit the observations. For this reason the pith of the matter became from then on the Cu-Si system. At that time we did not know of Smith's* and Andersen'sm latest diagrams. We first knew of them from Dr. Barrett's publication. Twenty-two alloys containing 2 to 11 pct Si were melted in a nitrogen atmosphere and generally homogenized for 2 to 4 hr at 800 °C. Part of the samples were then annealed at 700°, 600° and 500°. Annealing was followed by quenching in water. The phases corresponding to the various temperatures were identified by X-ray and microscopy. The Debye-Scherrer photographs generally were made of filings. The latter were produced after the last anneal of the samples, then equally annealed another 30 min in evacuated glass tubes and quenched in water. In the region of concentrations examined, the Cu-Si phases already known to us were observed: alpha, kappa (then called beta by us), gamma. By hot exposing an alloy of 7.69 pct Si at 800" and 750°,

The practical study of corrosion requires consideration of its economic aspects. It must be based on sound scientific principles, but it should be borne in mind that probably the most important object of a corrosion test is to determine what metal in corrosion-resisting construction will produce the greatest operating profit. Thus the corrosion test must be directly connected with money values or it is not a practical corrosion test. This, perhaps unusual, connection between corrosion and economics is partially due to the fact that corrosion deals only with the time factor or duration of equipment, and it is almost the only test which deals with this feature. In these statements a departure is made from the academic definition of the word corrosion and it is done deliberately. The use of the term corrosion is unusual. It is as though we spoke of a tensile test as a "breaking" test. We are not interested primarily in the break but in the strength of the metal. There is no English word which expresses our main interest in corrosion-testing, but let us have clearly in mind that we make corrosion tests to prevent corrosion. Our real interest is in this corrosion-prevention, not in the corrosion. Previous to 1922, it was common comment that "it is impossible to determine the course of corrosion by laboratory testing.'' This statement was true at that time in that the technique of laboratory testing for corrosion resistance was so vague that tests in the laboratory gave untrue results almost as often as true ones. This was so, even in the simple case of determining which one of two metals better resists a given solution. While this is no longer true the number of misleading "corrosion tests" still being ground out by laboratories is too large in the light of our present knowledge. There are two important features of corrosion testing whose neglect is a large contributing factor to misleading results: (1) The economic relations of the corrosion tests to other tests; (2) testing technique. Regarding economic relations J. F. Thompson l has said: "The use of any particular metal is rarely based upon the sole property of resistance to corrosion. THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. had an orebody at Miami, Ariz., of close to 100,000,000 tons of low-grade copper ore, and the method of mining this ore most profitably was of great importance. The selection of a method was practically limited to a "top-slicing," a "shrinkage-stope" or a "caving" method. The "top-slicing" method would give a high extraction of the developed ore, at a high mining cost, and the ?shrinkage-stope" or "caving" methods ) a lower extraction of, the developed ore, at a lower mining cost. ORE-DRAWING TESTS To decide on the method to be used it was necessary to know about what extraction of the ore could be obtained by the "shrinkage-stope" or "caving" methods. As no definite information regarding the question was available at the time, C. E. Mills, the general manager, thought that some information could be obtained by experimenting in drawing ore, covered with capping, from an experimental box. Some work had already been done along these lines by W. C. Browning for the Inspiration Copper Co. and by myself for the Live Oak Development Co. The idea was to represent as nearly as possible, in the experimental box, the conditions within an area of caved stopes of caved ore all ready for drawing. That is, the area was supposed to represent a semibroken mass with the capping above it in the same condition and ready to follow the ore downward as it was drawn out of the chutes under the ore. To represent the above condition, in the experimental box, crushed ore from the mine was placed in it to a given height, and red barren capping from the mine was placed on top of the ore.

Closed-circuit television was first installed under- ground by United States Steel's Tenessee Coal & Iron Division during the summer of 1957. Placed at a rotary dump location in one of TCI's mines, the installation was designed to permit operation of all functions of the load car haul chain, rotary dump, and empty car haul chain from a remote location, and to improve safety. The initial installation was very successful, and similar ones were subsequently placed at all of TCI's operating ore mines. The 10-ton capacity, automatic coupled mine cars are placed on the load car haul chain by the main-line locomotives. The haulage dispatcher has been located at the skip loading point of the underground pocket, some 80 to 100 ft below the rotary dump. The video monitor is located so the operator has a constant view of the activities around the rotary dump. By means of remote controls, the TV camera can range through a four-way turret of lens changes, can pan 350° in about nine seconds, can tilt 45° up or 45° down in nine seconds, and also can range through an optical focus for any of the lens positions.

Activity-composition curves jor cobalt oxide and manganese oxide in solid solutions with spinel-type structure have been determined by studying the equilibrium between the spinel phase and a coexisting solid-solution phase in the tewzperature range 1100" to 1400"C. Within limits of experimental error, the system displays the behavior of a regular solution. The excess integral free energy of mixing is represented by the equation . The standard free energy of formation of cobalt manganite, CoMn,O,, from the oxide components COO mzd Mn2OS at 1200°C is calculated to be -8.6 kcal. AMONG the technologically and theoretically most important oxide phases are those which crystallize with the same structure type as the mineral MgO . A120,. Although the name spinel originally was used only for this mineral, the term is generally used today to designate the whole group of oxide phases with this same structure type. It is in this wider meaning that the term is being used in the present paper. The previous literature on spinels is very extensive. There are two aspects of spinels which have attracted particular attention: the structure, including the nature and distribution of the cations present, and the physical properties (electric, magnetic). The status of knowledge in these fields has been well-summarized in recent review articles.1'2 By contrast, thermodynamic properties of spinels are virtually unknown. Delineation of the activity-composition curve over the whole composition range of a solid-solution series with spinel-type structure is the objective of the present work. The system at elevated temperatures (>1000"C) constitutes such a series. The activity-composition curves for this system can be calculated from a study of the equilibrium between the above spinel solid solution and a solid solution (Co,Mn)O with sodium chloride-type structure. Data for the latter solid solution have become available recently.3 The system, in contact with metallic CO at 1200°C, obeys Raoult's law. The determination of the activity-composition curve for the spinel phase is based on the following relations. Consider the reduction-oxidation equilibrium for cobalt ions according to the equation: Because it is impossible in practice to measure single activities of electrically charged constituents, we will treat the equilibria in terms of electrically neutral components. Eq. [I] can then formally be written as follows: where and the activities of cobalt oxide in the (Co,Mn)O and the spinel solid-solution phases, respectively, K is a constant at constant temperature, and Pa is the oxygen pressure of the gas phase. The numerical value of K can be determined from a determination of the oxygen pressure P& for the equilibrium coexistence of Cos04 and COO in the binary system Co-0. EFFECTIVE sand permeabilities can be ascertained from core analysis if the laboratory data are compensated to allow for the presence of connate or residual water. Such adjustments can be made by applying empirically derived correction factors. Effective sand permeabilities can be estimated also from analytical studies of field depth-pressure measurements. In one method the time rate of pressure build-up after a well is shut in from steady-state flow is required, and in the other the direct measurement of a steady-state rate of flow and the corresponding equilibrium pressure. The results of the investigation discussed in this paper demonstrate that these methods for determining mean effective sand permeabilities can be correlated.

ASH in coal has always been regarded as an undesirable substance, as the heat content of a coal decreases in direct proportion to its ash content. It represents so much inert material that has to be transported, handled when the coal is burned, and finally disposed of. W. R. Roberts, in an address before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, on Sept. 29, 1925, said that on an annual output of five hundred million tons of coal, a reduction of 3 per cent. of ash means fifteen million tons of refuse and a decrease of $30,000,000 in freight charges. Ash also often prevents efficient utilization of the coal through the formation of clinker caused by the melting of the ash constituents when subjected to heat. The mineral constituents of coal may be of such nature as to make the coal unsuited for specific uses, as for instance, high-sulfur coal for making metallurgical coke. While the usual proximate analysis of coal gives the amount of ash, it gives no information as to the nature and composition of the ash nor of the mineral constituents from which the ash is produced. For the efficient washing of coal to remove ash-forming constituents it is desirable to know the composition and distribution of the ash-forming constituents. Obviously such information is also desirable for the most efficient utilization of coal.

TEMPERATURE considerations are of prime importance in the manufacture of steel products-front the time the metal is produced in the melting furnace, where the chemical reactions have a direct dependence on the temperatures of the bath, to the final machining of work on which the expansion due to the rise in temperature of the forgings during machining must be allowed for. Methods employed and difficulties encountered in some of the more important steps are here outlined. These methods are the result of years of experience, with many methods of temperature determination, and have been successful in routine works practice in the manufacture of high-quality steels. In the operations of melting, forging, and heat treatment, if the product is to be of the best quality each operation must be carefully followed through. A high-quality product cannot be obtained even with the best heat treatment if the steel is poorly melted, and, conversely, the best steel ever made may he spoiled by inefficient heat treatment. To perform the best work in any of these operations, temperatures must be accurately regulated.

A cyanide leaching process developed at Michigan Technological University was tested in a 12 to 24 tpd pilot plant. Flowsheet layout and equipment are described. Cyclic operation of leaching, copper precipitation by acidification, and regeneration of the cyanide leaching solution are discussed. Copper extraction and reagent consumption were as predicted by laboratory tests, and the process was proven to be technically feasible. The White Pine Copper Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Copper Range Co., produces copper in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Production in 1965 amounted to 138 million pounds of metal. An expansion program now under way will increase this by approximately one half. The highly mechanized room and pillar mine produces 18,000 tons of ore per day, which is treated in a flotation plant. The concentrate is smelted in a reverberatory furnace, the matte is blown in converters to blister copper, and the blister copper is further refined to a uniformly high-quality Lake copper, which is 100% conductive and has a silver content of 25 to 40 oz per ton. The run of the mine ore averages 22.5 lbs of copper per ton with the ore mineral occurring in the form of chalcocite. The nature of the mineralization is such that the sand tailings average a little over 4 lbs of copper per ton. Intensive research has improved copper recovery in the flotation operation to some extent, but at the scale of present operation about 12,000 tons of sands containing over 48,000 lbs of copper go to the tailings pond daily. When the plant expansion is completed, the loss of copper will be somewhat greater. In 1959, the White Pine Copper CO, initiated a study of the recovery of copper in the sand tailings. Inasmuch as the flotation operation was considered to be optimized, a logical approach seemed to be leaching. For various reasons ammonia, ferric chloride, acid, and biological leaching were ruled out as impracticable. This led to a consideration of cyanide leach-

THE investigations described were made on a portion of Clear Creek basin near Golden, Colo. (A portion of the area under survey is shown in Fig. 1. The photograph was taken in the vicinity of station No. 2 of Line II.) Three principal purposes were in the minds of the investigators: 1. To repeat with modern, more sensitive and more reliable instruments magnetometric placer investigations previously made. 2. To disprove the recently advanced theory that deposits of the glacial period have no pronounced magnetic effects. 3. To develop in detail the theory of the magnetic effects produced by placer deposits. Six years ago, the first magnetic observations were published, which proved that it is possible to locate gold-bearing channels with relatively crude instruments.1 Two years ago, K. C. Laylander published results obtained with similar instruments.2 The measurements of the latter were discussed by the senior author of this paper.3 At that time, however, the material available for such a discussion was somewhat scarce and not made with the most modern magnetic instruments, although very brilliant results were obtained. Therefore, the senior author felt that magnetic investigations should be made on very clear geologic conditions with the most modern instruments.

The Meadow River No. 1 preparation plant, owned by Sewell Coal Co. which is a subsidiary of the Pittston Co., was commissioned in the spring of 1974. A survey of the environmental noise levels was conducted, and the dominant noise sources identified. An engineering program was initiated to reduce the prevailing levels to a point that the operator's exposure would be within compliance with the MESA regulation for ear protection. The program was continued until compliance was achieved and the attenuation factors for each abatement device recorded. The highlights of this program will be presented with a discussion of the practicality of the devices utilized.

THE metallographic structures most frequently encountered in rifle barrels, and which are illustrated by the accompanying photomicrographs, fall naturally into two groups, distinguished by the method used to produce in the stock a physical condition having the requisite properties. The first group consists 'of "rolled" barrels; that is, barrels subjected to hot working by rolling in or near the critical range. In the second group, the stock, which is smaller in diameter than the first, is upset to form the butt end and is then heat-treated by giving it a quench and a draw. These barrels will be referred to as "heat-treated" barrels. The structure of the rolled barrels resembles closely that of the same steel after annealing. There is the same network of excess ferrite outlining the grain boundaries, but the grains themselves are composed of sorbite rather than pearlite. The grain size is closely related to the rolling temperature. The critical-point curves of this grade of steel, which is approximately 0.50 to 0.60 per cent. of carbon and 1.00 to 1.30 per cent. of manganese, show a single very pronounced point between 1300° and 1350° F. (704° and 732° C.). Barrels rolled within this temperature range give an exceedingly fine grain, shown in Fig. 1. In fact, the grains may be so fine that, at a low magnification, they may be confused with the heat-treated structure discussed below, Fig. 6. A magnification of 500 diameters, however, will always resolve a rolled barrel into the characteristic structure, shown in Fig. 2. As the temperature is increased, the grains are found to be larger. If, on the other hand, the rolling temperature is below the critical range, the structure previous to rolling will not be obliterated, the only effect of rolling being to elongate the coarse sorbite grains in the direction of rolling, Fig. 3. This distortion is greatest at the muzzle. Heat-treated barrels are quenched in oil from above the critical range, which should give a martensitic structure, Fig. 4, but the presence of some troostite in the martensite is frequently noted when the quench has not been sufficiently drastic, Fig. 5. The structure brought about by the subsequent draw is not so striking, though quite as typical. It is sorbitic or sorbito-pearlitic, and under- a low magnification appears

Numerous investigatiolls have been carried out to determine the total oxygen present in the basic open-hearth bath and the results of these studies have clearly defined the factors controlling the bath oxidation during the period prior to deoxidation. On the other hand, very little is known concerning any changes in total oxygen content that may occur during deoxidation, tapping and teeming. The need for such additional data is continually becoming more apparent, since there is no strict technical basis for selecting any particular deoxidation practice. Many steels are made for the same purposes and to the same chemical analyses by widely differing practices. Apparently, each practice is satisfactory. However, it would be desirable to establish more definitely the effects and relative merits of the individual practices. Such information could be used to give a definite foundation for evaluating various types of deoxidation. In order to approach this problem, a study was made of the changes effected in the total oxygen content of several grades of steel by representative open-hearth deoxidation practices. To carry out such studies, it was necessary that a reliable testing procedure for determining the oxygen content of the steel bath and the ingot mold be established. Before entering on any extensive testing program, consideration was given to the available methods of obtaining steel samples and analyzing for oxygen. Testing Procedures It has been shown5-9 that in solidified steel oxygen may ekist in combination with iron, manganese, silicon, aluminum, titanium, chromium and carbon, depending upon the amount of these elements in the sample. In molten steel, however, there has been no direct distinction of the various oxides. Accordingly, the total active oxygen in the molten steel bath is designated by the symbol 0. During deoxidation, various oxides may be present either in solution in the molten steel or as solid or liquid inclusions. Any sample taken from the molten steel for oxygen analysis will include both the dissolved and the mechanically included oxygen.
