The Mariposa estate, a grant made by the Mexican Government to Juan 13. Alvarado, during the time when California was still under the dominion of Mexico, was purchased in 1847 by J. C. Fremont, and the United States patent issued to him in 1856. By sale, or its equivalent, money advanced, the property came into the hands of the Mariposa Company, June 25th, 1863, and through a varied existence of work and temporary inactivity, has as yet been kept as an undivided property, and rests at present with the Mariposa Land and Mining Company of California. I pass over this period of 15 years without giving the history of the ups and downs of the estate, partly because it is familiar to many, and also because I think in such a case this paper would assume too much the character of a narrative. The estate is situated in Mariposa County, California, about 170 miles southeast of San Francisco. It begins in lat. 37' 26' 38'' north, and long. 119' 55' west, and runs 6 miles north; thence 69 miles west; thence 5 miles northwesterly towards the Merced River; thence 84 miles southerly; thence 3 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 2 miles southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile northerly, and thence 2 miles easterly to the place of the beginning; embracing 44,387 acres (70 sq. miles) more or less. To describe this vast estate in detail as to its full geology, its numerous quartz veins, its many facilities to exploit them and work them by cheap methods, would lead me further than I intend to go at present, and I will content myself to describe the latest workings of the company and its immediate field of operations. As long ago as 1860 the late Dr. Adelberg advised the running of an adit from the northwestern edge of the estate at Benton Mills 011 the Mereed River. His object was to undercut the deepest workings of the then paying mines on the estate—the Pine Tree and Josephine. Following this advice, the tunnel known as "River Tunnel " was commenced. I noticed it described for concentrating matte, but I believe the older Japanese process was to use it for-smelting directly, by a pyritic smelting and Bessemerizing all in one operation, in the same simple hearth apparatus. There is a monograph published in German, on Copper-Ore Smelting in the Mabuki Hearth. At Ashio the practice of injecting bituminous coal at the, tuyères is noteworthy. This paper discusses a Personal Computer (PC) software package that reduces the time required to evaluate a mineral reserve. It provides for: •Entry of borehole data onto PC diskettes and the creation of a borehole database; •Capture of map data using an attached X-Y digitizer; •Calculation of uniform square grids for thickness, mineral qualities, overburden ratio, etc., •Compilation of multiple such grids into a digital model, and iterative evaluation of the model with the user applying constraints and cut-off values; and • Graphic display of grid cells (blocks) showing which cells failed, and on which constraint(s), and a complete reserve report showing tonnages, averages, histograms, and quality arrays.

There has been developed at Latouche a rather unusual system of mining which, for want of a better name, has been called the "Latouche system of mining." It is a modified form of shrinkage stoping applicable to orebodies of large or fairly large size where the ground is such that timbering would not be required in stoping. Mention has been made of this method of mining by Birchll who gave no details as it had been in use only a short time and the final outcome undetermined. The system, however, has proved to be entirely successful and it is thought that a paper covering it might be of general interest. Before proceeding with a detailed description of the Latouche system a brief description of the property and the various mining methods previously used will be given. Location The Beatson mine of the Kennecott Copper Corpn. is situated on the west coast of Latouche Island, in Prince William Sound, Southwestern Alaska, 45 miles east of Seward, the coast terminus of the U. S. Government Railroad. It is a regular port of call for ships on the Southwestern Alaska run. The island is about 12 miles long and 3 miles wide. A ridge of mountains runs the entire length with a maximum elevation of 2500 feet. Climate Latouche has to contend with possibly the greatest amount of precipitation on the North American continent. The annual average precipitation for the past 4 years has been 188 in., with 248 in. for the year 1926. A rainfall of 4 in. per day is not uncommon. In the winter the thermometer rarely falls below +20° F. and the snowfall is usually heavy during the months of March and April.

ONE of the problems that confronts the chronicler of the Porphyry story is to determine the date from which Morenci should be regarded as one of the group. The mines have the distinction of being the first operated in Arizona for copper. A small smelter was in operation as early as 1873 and in the eighties two smelters accounted for a substantial production ranging from 3,000,000 to 6,000,000 lb. per year. The first concentrator was built in 1886, but the ores were principally oxidized, and direct smelting ore still supplied most of the production. As early as 1893, the mining of somewhat leaner porphyry ores, containing copper in the form of the sulphide mineral, chalcocite, was commenced; but these still were of comparatively high grade and the concentrators were plants of 100 to 400 tons daily capacity. Moreover, the backbone of operations was still the production of rich oxidized ores for direct smelting. They assayed 10 to 15 per cent copper and the sulphide milling ores assayed 3 to 4 per cent. A significant comment appears in the Copper Handbook for 1908. Speaking of the Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., which was to become the most important component of the present Morenci enterprise, the editor, Horace Stevens, says: "A tremendous amount of ore is in sight, ore reserves . . . being estimated at 10,370,600 tons . . . " It seems fair to infer from this that the property was not yet regarded as an immense low-grade mine, but that the copper content of perhaps 70 lb, to the ton made an ore of "medium " grade even according to the standards of the time. THE enrichment of mineral-veins as a result of the migration of material from an upper oxidized or disintegrated part of a vein to a lower level, where it is redeposited, is now, I believe, quite generally accepted as one explanation of the occurrence of bonanzas in gold- and silver-veins, as well as that of bodies of high-grade ores in cupriferous deposits.* Vogt has called attention to the fact that there are numerous examples of such rich shoots which are " of exclusively primary character, and dependent upon the laws which governed the original ore-deposition." To this I would add that there are also other examples which are neither of primary origin nor clue to descending waters, but result from a reopening of the veins and their penetration by ascending heated waters whose metallic contents are deposited by reaction with the primary pyrite (and possibly other minerals), forming "secondary" enrichments. My studies of the copper-veins of Butte, Montana, show: That the veins there are of several ages and systems; that the older primary quartz-pyrite veins were reopened by later movements, correlated with a period of volcanic activity; and that they were penetrated by hot alkaline waters carrying copper and arsenic in solution, which were deposited presumably by reaction with the pyrite of the original vein. The enormous development of the Butte deposits, attendant upon the extraction of nearly 10,000 tons of ore a day, has revealed many facts concerning the nature and distribution of the ores. Model experiments were carried out on the mass transfer of iodine between n-hexane and a 4 2 X 10-3 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The influence of mechanical stirring by means of small gas bubbles (ca. 0.01 ml in volume) on mass transfer was examined in independent experiments. The results were described with the help of the penetration theory and in the case of bubble stirring with the help of a mathematical model based on this theory. S LAG-METAL reactions, especially those in steel-making processes, often occur under conditions where gas is evolved in the form of bubbles that break through the slag-metal interface. It is known that stirring by means of bubbles increases the mass transfer coefficient, but there has been very little quantitative work done in this field. Because of the difficulties that attach to experimental work at high temperatures this study was confined to model experiments at room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The transport of iodine from an n-hexane layer into a weak sodium hydroxide solution was studied a) with stirring by means of bubbles and b) with mechanical stirring. The apparatus for the experiments with bubbles consisted of the cell, two Dreschel bottles filled with hexane in order to saturate the nitrogen flow, one flow meter, and a nitrogen gas cylinder fitted with a fine-regulating valve. Fig. 1 shows the cell consisting of a glass cylinder 33 cm in height with an overall diameter of 7.5 cm embedded in a copper flange. The flange is connected to a Plexiglas plate and to the gas inlet. The Plexiglas plate has holes of 0.2 mm diam bored into it which are spaced 1 cm from each other. For the experiments with mechanical stirring the bottom of the cell was sealed off by a Plexiglas plate. The upper layer was stirred by means of a glass stir-rer and the bottom layer with the help of a magnetic stirrer in a counter rotatory direction. Both stirrer speeds could be varied continuously. METALLURGISTS engaged in the pulling of single crystals of germanium and silicon, and their zone purification and zone levelling for transistor and diode production, have found that the lifetimes of minority carriers in low resistivity samples tend to be shorter than in high resistivity material, although equal care is taken in the crystal preparation. In other words, it is more difficult to obtain long lifetimes in single crystals of low resistivity semiconductors. It is the purpose of this note to point out that this phenomenon follows directly from the Hall1 and Shockley-Read' theories of lifetimes in semiconductors." Total grinding mill system life is dependent upon the original selections and specifications of its components: the mill, its drive, drive motor, motor control, and power system. This paper discusses the complex considerations involved and the critical decisions which must be made by the buyer, the mill manufacturer, and by the gear vendor during the proposal and ordering stages. Interrelations between the mill manufacturer and the gear vendor, application of ACMA standards, how drive standards and specifications are refined through steady-state and computer-simulated torsional analyses are included, along with correlational field testing, as demands for larger sizes challenge the current state of the art.

FOR the purposes of this discussion, the direct gasification of coal means the of hydrogen and carbon monoxide by the well-known water-gas reaction. Chemicals or other synthetic products may be made from these constituents of the gas and under such circumstances the gas is called synthesis gas. Or, if the same gas is used as a fuel, it is called blue gas or water gas. This type of gas has usually been made from coke, especially in this country, and has been used both for fuel purposes and for manufacture of chemicals. Recently, natural gas has gained the ascendancy as a source of synthesis gas for manufacture of chemicals because of its relative cheapness. As natural gas becomes less readily available and more expensive, coal will take its place as a raw material for the preparation of synthesis gas. This substitution will probably take the form of direct gasification of the coal rather than the present two-step procedure of carbonization of the coal followed by gasification of the coke. The chief reason for this probability is the intensive research now being carried on by several organizations to develop successful and economical processes for the direct gasification of coal, which is a considerably cheaper fuel than coke. In the following pages an attempt has been made to predict the chemicals that will result from this future production of synthesis gas by the direct gasification of coal. CHEMICAL REACTIONS OF SYNTHESIS GAS Given the proper conditions, there are many chemical reactions leading to production of useful products that can be carried out with this mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. These many reactions may be grouped into three classes: (1) interaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, possibly with addition of other reactants; (2) reaction of hydrogen with various substances; (3) reaction of carbon monoxide with various substances. Thus sometimes hydrogen and carbon monoxide are utilized together in the same chemical reaction while in other instances only the hydrogen or only the carbon monoxide is required as a reactant. Fortunately, practical methods are available for securing either hydrogen or carbon monoxide from synthesis gas, some of which are also applicable for changing the ratio of these two constituents in the gas when that is desirable.

In order to determine the ability of cyclones with heavy liquids to preconcentrate ores, a study of the variables which govern the behavior of the solids in the apparatus has been made. To assess the test results, the cyclone products have been examined by sink and float analysis at various specific gravities and the results examined by the Tromp type curves. This analysis has allowed the development of the SG50 unit — specific gravity of the particles, 50% of which goes to overflow and 50% to underflow — rather than the d50 (size) unit used in classification. The results of tests using the closed circuit laboratory cyclone assembly with dry feed samples show the validity of the equation: Results indicate that 83% of the feed may be rejected containing 0.1% Sn. Recoveries in excess of 80% are obtained at a grade of 1.7% Sn from feed samples assaying 0.4% Sn. As water-wetted particles may comprise the plant feed, separate tests were performed to examine the effect of water in the feed material. Results indicate that the entrained water divides into two fractions, one of which is defined as free water and is rejected to the cyclone overflow, the other fraction forms an adhering envelope of water on the ore particles, altering their effective size and density. The presence of the envelope of water on the particles increases the ease with which the heavy liquid can be recovered but decreases the concentration efficiency. It is proposed that the detrimental effect of water in the cyclone may be minimized by using a higher feed pressure cx by the use of surfactants. A higher feed pressure, by increasing shearing forces, would reduce the thickness of the water envelope on the particles. The surfactants, by adsorbing on the particles and producing hydrophobic surfaces, would displace the water envelope and allow the heavy liquids to wet the modified surfaces. In both cases a larger proportion of the entrained water would report to the cyclone overflow as free water, thus minimizing the detrimental effect of water on the concentration efficiency. Additional testing is required on the behavior of water in the system; to determine the optimum particle size for the preconcentration step; to determine final particle size for optimum liberation and subsequent treatment of the products in present plants and to determine the efficiency with which the heavy liquids may be recovered from the products. For many years tin mining in Bolivia has been very important to the economy of the country. In recent years the tin content of the ore reserves has been steadily declining. An improvement in concentration efficiency is highly desirable in order to increase productivity from the present low-grade mine ores and to allow retreatment of the many millions of tons of tailings from past operations, some of which equal the present ores in tin content. A number of investigators have been or at present are working on various phases or approaches to the problem. Gravity concentration is used in Boliva today as it has been in the past to recover tin minerals from the mine ores. An objective of the work reported in this paper was to examine the possibility of treating present low-grade ores and sink-float tailings products, at a relatively coarse grind, in order to produce a higher grade feed material to the present gravity concentration plants. The possibility of using heavy liquids in cyclones to treat large tonnages with a minimum of outlay presented itself and is of particular interest since heavy liquids are now available with physical properties which lend themselves to simple recovery methods. Tests were carried out using a closed circuit laboratory cyclone assembly. It was desirable to determine the value of using the SG50 concept and Tromp curves for analyzing the cyclone concentration test results. The effects of entrained water on the behavior of ore particles in the cyclone were examined. The use of pellets in North American blast furnaces has made the mixes used in the associated sinter plants unique. These mixes generally contain a high percentage of fine waste oxide materials as the principal iron bearing portion of the mix, with iron ores and concentrates added in minor amounts only. Additionally, the sinter basicity is always above one and can be three or higher. This paper will discuss the large body of knowledge and experience developed by one company on this type of sinter mix. Results of laboratory tests will be used to illustrate how mix composition and feed preparation affect sinter productivity and quality.

ThE thermodynamic activities of nickel and chromium in liquid Ni-Cr alloys have not been previously reported. There have been several investigations on the solid alloys.1-3 In the present investigation the activity of chromium in liquid Ni-Cr alloys at 1600° C was determined by the use of the following galvanic cell, The use of galvanic cells employing solid oxide electrolytes for determining the activity of metals in solid alloys was first demonstrated by Rapp and Maak4 on Cu-Ni alloys between 700° and 1000°C. Recently Schwerdtfeger5 tested the performance of the ZrO2(CaO) electrolyte at 1600°C and found it satisfactory for oxygen pressures as low as 10"12 atm. He also demonstrated the use of solid oxide electrolytes for determining the activities in liquid metal systems in measuring the activity of manganese in Fe-Mn alloys at 1500°C. Extensive investigations have been carried out in this laboratory, exploring the oxygen partial pressure lower limit at which ZrO2(CaO) electrolyte can be used satisfactorily in oxygen galvanic cells at 1600°C. In a paper to be published at a later date,9 it is demonstrated conclusively that ZrO2(CaO) exhibits insignificant electronic conductivity at oxygen pressures down to about 3 x 10"13 atm which is lower than the oxygen partial pressure in equilibrium with Cr-Cr2O3 at 1600°C. Therefore, the activity of chromium can be related to the measured reversible electromotive force of the cell in the present investigation since no electronic short circulating will occur. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the cell used. The Cr-Cr2O3 electrode was made of equal weights of chromium and Cr2O3 powders which were mixed and packed into a recrystallized alumina crucible. A Pt-wire lead was embedded into the Cr-Cr2O3 compact to insure good contact. A ZrO2(CaO) crucible, supplied by the Zirconium Corp. of America, contained the Ni-Cr melt equilibrated with solid Cr2O3. The ZrO2(CaO) crucible was placed on the Cr-Cr2O3 electrode and additional Cr-Cr2O3 mixture was packed around it. Contact with the Ni-Cr alloy was made with a Cr2O3 tube, which is a weak electronic conductor. A platinum wire lead was attached to the Cr2O3 tube. The galvanic cell was lowered slowly into the hot zone of the furnace tube in order to avoid too large a thermal shock which could break the ZrO2 (CaO) crucible. The furnace was con- tinuously flushed with purified argon during the experiment. The temperature was measured with a Pt-Pt/10 pet Rh thermocouple and maintained at 1600° ± 5°C. The electromotive force was measured with a recording potentiometer. The furnace was turned off when measurements were being made in order to avoid induction effects and the reversibility of the cell was demonstrated in the usual manner. The electromotive force was measured several times over a period of approximately 1 hr. During that period the electromotive force remained constant within ± 3 pet and did not continuously drift in any one direction. After the experiment the alloys were analyzed for chromium in the usual manner. The measured electromotive forces of the cell at 1600°C, (2912°F), are listed in Table I. The activity of chromium, with solid pure chromium as the reference state, (a), was calculated using Eq. [l], , n F E I, n lna RT- U] where E is the measured electromotive force, F is the Faraday constant, and n is equal to 3, the number of equivalents per mole, (nF/RT = 18.59 volts'1 at 1600°C). The separate outputs of Burma and India in 1937 were 274,664,365 gal. valued at £4,474,147 and 75,657,857 gal. valued at £1,030,591, respectively. The corresponding figures for the year 1938 were 263,823,-265 gal. valued at £3,766,810 and 87,082,371 gal. valued at £1,234,563, respectively, which is a slight increase in total quantities but a fall in value for the combined outputs of Burma and India. The appreciable increase from India in 1938 is due to an increase of over 11 million gallons from Attock and a little from Digboi, while the decrease from Burma is due to a fall of nearly 9 million gallons from Yenangyaung, over 3 million gallons from Yenangyat (and Lanywa) and half a million gallons from Minbu (Table 1). The 'amount' of gasoline produced from natural gas during the year 1938 was 10,587,291 gal. in Burma and 496,163 gal. in the Punjab.
