Experimental data are presented showing the influence of size consist and firing rate upon the performance of bituminous coal-fired, single-retort, industrial underfeed stokers. Size segregation, degradation, and distributor data are also included. The conclusion is reached that size consist of the fuel as fired, is a critical factor in its performance on this class of equipment.

The application and development of computer models for simulation of transient ground water inflow to underground mines can assist in mine planning and operation as well as environmental impact assessment. Applications include planning for water handling, treatment, and disposal operations based on predicted mine inflow rates, determination of mining impacts on ground water movement and potentiometric surfaces in neighboring aquifers, evaluation of methods for minimizing ground water inflow, and determination of ground water inflow quality. The potential ground water inflow components to a mine consist of direct inflow from an adjacent aquifer and infiltration through intervening geologic formations. The rates of inflow are controlled by the geologic conditions, the potentiometric surface of the aquifer, and the hydrogeologic characteristics of the water-bearing and confining formations. The capabilities and potential use of a computer model for simulation of mine inflow are illustrated through an example problem.

When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which own equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of each of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $493,352. The A. I. M. E. trustees are Arthur S. Dwight, J. V. N. Derr and George D. Barron. The President of the Board is Francis Lee Stuart and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn.

In view of the great interest now taken in the tests of castiron and details of foundry practice, with the number of investigators at work, and recent improvements in the methods of research, it would seem that the time is ripe to attempt the solution of some of the many problems with which iron founders have to contend. Recent papers and discussions on these subjects* have opened up s large field for investigation, and have emphasized the importance of many considerations generally overlooked. With the view of promoting a comprehensive and systematic discussion, I have attempted to tabulate, in conveilient form, some of the most important points for investigation, on the general plan suggested, with such good results, by our former President, H. M. Howe, for the discussion on the Physics of Steel, at the Virginia Beach meeting, last year. This table can, no doubt, be modified or enlarged to advantage, and put in shape to serve as a guide or reminder to all who are interested in this line of work. A froth flotation plant to recover byproduct molybdenite must be designed specifically for the selected separation process and the type of ore being treated. However, some general rules concerning byproduct molybdenite plant design can be suggested that would be valid for most processes. The term byproduct molybdenite in this paper is limited to the recovery of molybdenite from copper porphyry ores, which essentially amounts to selectively separating molybdenite from copper and iron sulfide concentrates. In addition, most of the discussions would apply only to the almost universally used approach of floating the molybdenite and depressing the copper and iron sulfide minerals. Thickener It is considered essential that the feed to a byproduct molybdenite plant be thickened prior to being treated for molybdenite recovery for the following reasons: 1) Thickening allows the rougher and any preconditioning stages to be operated consistently at the optimum percent solids. 2) Generally, the size of equipment used for pretreatment and the rougher flotation is considerably smaller and less expensive than if the copper flotation concentrates were treated directly. 3) The removal of as much water as practical by thickening removes flotation reagents added in the copper flotation circuit, especially frother which can be quite troublesome in a byproduct molybdenite plant. Although thickening of the molybdenite plant feed has long been recognized as necessary to optimum metallurigcal results, very often this area has been designed poorly. The thickener should be sized so that it can produce a consistent thickened product containing 60 to 65% solids without the use of flocculants. Some plants are only able to thicken to 45 to 50% solids consistently while other plants let the percent solids vary from 45 to 60% over a 24-hr period. While the former is more desirable than the latter, in many cases better metallurgical results could be obtained if the percent solids could be held consistently close to 60%. Probably the simplest and most satisfactory system of handling the thickener underflow is to spigot it into a sump, using a sphincter type valve for the orifice, controlled by a density meter. Another satisfactory approach is to use an ODS type pump to meter the underflow. There are other methods of handling thickener underflow which work satisfactorily as long as the amount of copper concentrates entering the thickener is relatively uniform. However, they often fail to operate satisfactorily when there are large fluctuations in the thickener feed rate due to fluctuations in ore tonnage and/or copper grade. If the percent solids in the plant feed could be held close to 65%. There is the possibility the molybdenite plant tailing would not have to be thickened prior to the copper filter plant. This means that the molybdenite rougher float would have to be conducted at 45 to 50% solids with all the cleaner tailings returned to the rougher for dilution. Admittedly, in some situations this approach would be impossible, but if capital or plant area is limited, it should be considered.

MAGNESITE is found in 22 California counties, but many of the deposits are too small or too impure to be of commercial value. Several of substantial size and quality were entirely exhausted by wartime operation. At present, three properties comprise the only known workable deposits in the state. Of these, the Western mine and the Patterson mine have been known and worked for many years, and have been described in considerable detail in various publications, therefore need only brief mention here, because of their proximity to the Bald Eagle mine. The latter, recently developed, is unusual in type of ore deposit, plant design and operation, as well as products made, and very little has been written concerning it. WESTERN MINE The Western mine, 32 miles south of Livermore, Calif., was formerly operated by C. S. Maltby. It has been a consistent producer for many years.1 The ore is of amorphous variety, occurring along fracture zones in serpentine. The veins vary greatly in width, the average being perhaps 8 ft., with the maximum indicated in one early stope of 40 ft.; 2 ft. is considered the minimum for economical mining. The strike of the veins is predominantly north and south, with dip to the west varying from 40º to 75 º. Walls are well defined and as a rule firm and easily supported. Veins range in length from a few hundred feet to 1000 or more. Their maximum vertical extent is about 350 ft., but many run less. Early mining consisted of open-cut and glory-hole work on the larger outcrops. This was followed underground by a modified shrinkage system, the waste and low-grade horses being removed by hand sorting on the tramming levels and transported to surface dumps. In the last few years, there have been developed at the plant of the Nichols Copper Co., Laurel Hill, 'Borough of Queens, New York City, improvements in electrolytic copper refining by the series system that have materially increased the flexibility and economy of that system. The purpose of this paper is to discuss, as of interest to refiners and to those who have copper to refine, as well as to the engineering profession in general, the changes' that have taken place resulting in wider application and increased efficiency of the series system. Copper is electrolytically refined in two ways, which are spoken of as the "multiple system" and the "series system." In both systems, the electrolytic tanks are in series electrically. Before National Lead built an industrial plant on its Fredricktown property, some 100 miles south of St. Louis, a 750x500-ft area on the proposed site was investigated by electrical resistivity, seismic refraction, and churn drilling. Data were accumulated to prepare an isopach map of the overburden and to determine soundness of the dolomite bedrock and the depth to bedrock at fixed points. The site was on a gently sloping hillside. Elevations above sea level ranged from 760 ft in the northwest corner to 820 ft along the eastern edge, giving a total relief of 60 ft. There were no major drainage features, but in the northern part of the plant site there was an indicated depression area which later was interpreted as reflecting subsurface conditions in the bedrock. No rock was exposed in the entire plant site area; the surface was characterized by soil and overburden. GEOLOGY Prevailing geology in the area of investigation was relatively simple—Bonneterre dolomite overlain by residuum. The red overburden was that derived from the weathered Bonneterre. Some chert was present, interpreted in the general area as a weathering of both the Bonneterre dolomite and younger sedimentary rocks such as the Potosi dolomite. During the period of actual measurements the residuum varied from moist near surface on the western edge of the proposed site to dry near surface on the eastern edge, and for this reason overburden resistivities ranged from low on the west to high on the east. Seismic velocities were low, since the material was not well packed. The bedrock encountered was dolomite, specifically the Bonneterre of Upper Cambrian age which, according to McQueen,' consists of an upper dark gray member and a lower light gray member. These have been further divided into four zones, in ascending sequence a dark gray, sandy argillaceous dolomite; a dark brown or black, fine-grained dolomite: a light gray, finely crystalline, compact dolomite; and, at the top, a dark brown, finely crystalline, compact dolomite. In the area of investigation the upper two zones were encountered in the drilling tests as constituting the bedrock. The dolomite varies widely in porosity, which is low in the dense, fine-grained layers. In this area, therefore, both electrical resistivities and seismic velocities were high. A combined numerical approach is proposed for the analysis of rock-liner interact ion in tunnels under the effects of severe dynamic loads. The method is based on employing finite element formulations which describe the linear behavior and incorporating it into a finite difference code which can describe the behavior of a jointed rock medium. This method can be applied for the analysis of tunnel systems in rock, and for studying the requirements for adequate support of the tunnel.

This paper discusses the materials handling problems encountered in cement plants in the areas of raw and finished product grinding and cement storage. It illustrates by examples taken from actual installations, how optimum feed rate is maintained in grinding circuits with properly applied bin dischargers (vibrating hoppers, Mexican feed boxes and aerated bin bottoms) for materials with high moisture content and/or difficult handling characteristics. Initial operating problems with the equipment will be discussed and maintenance requirements will be indicated for comparison purposes. In a modern cement plant, properly functioning bins and feeders are as essential as process control, for no process control system, however sophisticated, can perform efficiently if raw materials do not flow into the plant processing facilities at the required time and rate. Most materials used in the manufacture of portland cement - such as silica sand, iron ore fines, crushed limestone, gypsum, clinker or cement itself-have difficult handling characteristics under specific conditions. High moisture content or even dampness due to condensation may create bin hang-ups, arching and ratholing, all of which result in improper functioning of the feeders or proportioning equipment. The occurrence of these problems in existing cement plants spurred a search for the corrective devices discussed in this article. The equipment investigated included bin dischargers in the form of vibrating hoppers for moist raw materials, Mexican feed boxes for clinker and aerated bin bottoms for cement. Operating experience with different types of bin dischargers showed that the actual performance of some did not come up to the expected level under prevailing operating conditions. The aim of this paper is to record the results of this experience and there- by aid designers and/or operators in selecting the most suitable equipment for their requirements. BIN DISCHARGERS (GENERAL) A discharger is a device that causes stored solids to flow out of a hopper without metering the rate of flow as a feeder does. The investigation discussed here encompasses the following types of bin dischargers used in a cement plant: (1) vibrating hoppers (horizontal motion), (2) whirlpool hoppers (horizontal and vertical motion), (3) aerated bin bottoms (air fluidization), and (4) Mexican feed boxes. Most of the bins used in the cement industry are of the plug flow type. Raw materials with difficult handling characteristics such as high moisture content may cause flow problems when fed through small openings (12 x 18 in.), even if two walls of the bin are vertical.' The most appropriate solution to these flow problems would be the installation of separate mass flow bins for the different materials such as silica sand, iron ore fines, crushed limestone and gypsum, with each bin correctly designed from test data obtained by measuring the flow properties of representative samples. However, limited storage capacity and plant space usually preclude this approach. Quantitative design of bins for flow based on measured flow properties of representative samples of the bulk solid to be handled is no longer an "engineering art," thanks to the basic research done on the flow of bulk solids in bins during the last decade.2, Where space limitations exist, however, or where improvements are being sought for equipment already installed, bin dischargers offer a satisfactory solution to flow problems. They can be applied effectively under flat-bottom bins or mounted to existing plug-flow bins with very little modification to these facilities. In both the foregoing cases, plug flow will be maintained, but the flow channel will be considerably increased so that it is larger than the discharger's bin-side diameter, and material flow can be sustained if the discharger is correctly selected. The main purpose of a bin discharger is to draw the bulk solids across the whole area of the bin outlet, to make the opening fully effective. AN extensive survey of the factors which affect austenite grain growth has already been made.' These factors are temperature, time at temperature, rate of heating, initial grain size, hot-working, alloy content, ofheating,initialand rate of cooling from the liquidus-solidus temperature. In the present work, a vacuum-melted temperature.electrolytic iron was used and the variables studies were temperature, time at temperature, and prior ferrite grain size. Other factors were maintained constant. The iron used in this study was vacuum-melted electrolytic iron of nominal composition of impurities of 0.07 wt pct. It was supplied as a ½ in. round cold-drawn bar. This iron was tested in three conditions: as-received, annealed 6 hr at 1200°F, and annealed 6 hr at 1600°F. Samples were ? in. disks cut from the bar. The prior anneals were carried out in vacuum and the isothermal treatments were carried out in vacuum-sealed Vycor tubing. The thermal etch technique was employed to determine the austenite grain size. Prior to sealing the test specimens, one surface of the sample was polished metallographically. This surface, after heating, was examined to determine the austenite grain size, since the austenite boundaries are revealed by thermal etching. This is essentially the only technique available for measuring the austenite grain size of low carbon steels or pure irons without altering the composition. It has been shown to yield results that are in agreement with other methods used for determining austenite grain sizes.' The specimen size was quite large compared to the grain size measured, so inhibition of growth due to size effects is probably negligible. After vacuum sealing, each sample was placed into a furnace at temperature and at the completion of the run was quenched into a mercury bath. The growth temperatures used were 1700°, 1800°, 1900°, and 2000°F controlled to -~10"F. Growth times were varied from 10 to 240 hr. The long times were used in order to eliminate the nucleation and growth effects occurring during the initial transformation. Time was measured from the introduction of the capsule into the hot furnace to the time of quench. Grain-size measurements were made with the use of a grain-size eyepiece of a microscope. By determining the number of grains per square millimeter at X100 and taking the square root of the reciprocal of this number, the average linear dimension of the grains was determined. Figs. 1 and 2 are plots of these data as a function of time and temperature for the various conditions investigated. The variation of D, the linear dimension of the grains, was assumed to follow the equation3 D = A tn. The curves of Fig. 1 were obtained from the data by the use of the least-squares method of analysis. Fig. 1 is for the growth of the as-received stock and Fig. 2 is for growth after prior treatments. Differentiating the foregoing equation gives an expression for the rate of growth dD/dt = G = nAtn-1 = nD/t. Both D and G as functions of t are given in Table I. It should be noted that G is a function of time; the growth rate is rapid at early stages and decreases with increasing time. Since increasing temperature increases the growth rate, it has been common practice to use the empirical relationship G = Go e-Q/RT to relate temperature to growth rate. The growth rate customarily has been taken at constant values of D on the basis that the rate of growth is related to the boundary surface tension and this is measured by the curvature of the boundary. At constant D values, the growth rate is a function of time and temperature. The growth rate can be related however to temperature at constant time, and this has the advantage that under these conditions the growth rate is a function only of temperature. Obviously the Q values, activation energies, obtained for each assumption will not be the same and the question of which is the more correct is a moot one, since the assumed exponential relationship in either case has no particular theoretical significance. By plotting G, at constant grain size, vs 1/T, the activation energy over the temperature range of 1800" to 2000°F is found to vary from 30,000 cal per mol at the smaller grain sizes to 50,000 cal per mol at the larger grain sizes. The 1700°F data do not correlate with the data at higher temperatures. The activation energies for the 1200" and 1600°F prior annealed materials were calculated as 50,000 and 62,000 cal per mol, respectively, using the reciprocal time to a given grain size as a measure of the growth rate. Chemical and physical properties of soils and overburden materials must be evaluated prior to strip mining activities. This information can be used to assess whether subsurface overburden can be equal in quality to the native soils, especially when these soils are classed as prime farm lands. In northeast Texas, lignite primarily occurs in the Calvert Bluff formation which is underlain by the Simboro and Hooper formations. These formations are in the Wilcox group (early Eocene). The Carrizo formation, that unconformably overlies the Calvert Bluff formation, consists of thick layers of sand with poor water and nutrient retention capabilities. These materials are least suited for placement on the surface of reclaimed land. The oxidized, medium textured overburden of the Culvert Bluff and Simboro formations possess adequate water and nutrient retention properties and are better suited for sustained plant growth when compared to the existing native soils. Non-oxidized Calvert Bluff and Hooper sediments generally have acceptable properties for reclamation although acid forming sulfides occasionally occur. Materials high in sulfides must be buried during mining or appropriately treated prior to reclamation.

W: 0. HOTCHKISS, Madison, Wis. (written discussion*).-Mr. George's paper on. "The Wisconsin Zinc District" is a very complete and clear description, which it is a pleasure to read. His discussion of the origin of the ores is the least satisfactory part, and Mr. George correctly states present knowledge when he begins his paragraph on a origin with the words "the general supposition is, etc." There is still much to be learned regarding the details of the processes by which the ores have reached their present situation. In this the Wisconsin district differs not at all from other mining districts. It is my hope that Mr. George and others, equally clear-thinking, who are in close touch with these operations will be able at an early date to give us more information on this subject.

Condusions. From the work on aluminum powder, the following general con clusions can bc drawn: I. The physical properties of aluminum compacts, such as density. strength and ductility, increase with increasing pressure, up to the practicable pressure limits. 2. Good properties ill aluminum con pacts can be secured only by the use of high pressures, because it is neccssary to rupture the refractory oxide film on aluminum powder. 3. Considerable softening of the specimens occurs upon sintering. regardlers of the pressure used. General Conclusions 1. For relatively short-time sintering. molding pressure is a very important factor in the final physical properties of the sintered specimens. 2. The effect of pressure. is difierent for each metal, so that few general rules can be drawn that would apply to all metals. 3. In many cases, fur a particular metal powder and sintering temperature there is a critical pressure at which the best physical properties can be obtained. 4. The principles of cold work and in nealing and their effect on grain structure applied to massive metal also holds true for sintered metals. 5. We have seen that the first coal development in Pennsylvania was in the Pittsburgh bed in the southwestern corner of the state. The next mining, in point of time, was done in Clearfield County along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, but the amount of mining done was quite small for a number of years and was soon exceeded by that from the area north of the Susquehanna River in Tioga, Bradford and Lycoming Counties, which will be considered now. It is claimed that coal was first noticed in Tioga County, in 1792, by Robert and Benjamin Patterson who were leading a party of settlers from Williamsport to southern New York, and while clearing a road near the site of Blossburg, found coal, which was said to be good. About 1815 David Clemons made an arrangement with Aaron Bloss, owner of the land, to work some of the coal and hauled the first load down the river to Painted Post, N. Y., as there were no available markets in his own state. Smiths found it an excellent fuel and apparently he found a ready market for the small amount he could transport by wagons and sleighs. As wood began to become scarce around the towns in New York State, the knowledge of the coal deposits in the mountains at the head of the Tioga River attracted attention to the field and the necessity, for means of transportation from it. Some coal had been floated down the river, but navigation was uncertain and dangerous. In 1827 an iron plant was built, and to ship its product and coal, it was proposed to build a canal along the river to reach Corning, N. Y. A company had been chartered in 1826 in Pennsylvania to "make a navigable canal or slack-water navigation" to the state line and coal was shipped on rafts of logs, both being sold, during highwater. In 1828 the company was authorized to build a railroad instead of a canal, and in September 1840, the railroad was completed from Corning to Blossburg.1 That some coal from Pennsylvania had been reaching southern New York towns prior to the improved means of transport is shown by the report of a committee to the New York Assembly: "the bituminous coal has been brought to us either from Great Britain or from that part of our own country which borders on, and lies west and south of the Susquehan-

THE need for more efficient utilization of labor in the metal-mining industry has been the subject of several recent editorials in the mining press, and one attractive possibility for such improvement lies in the designing of future milling plants particularly with economy of man-power in mind. We are accustomed to think of mill design as the selection and coordinated arrangement of process equipment, but if labor is to be efficiently utilized it must be given early consideration in planning the new mill. There are three good reasons for economizing in labor: (I) to reduce costs, not only in the form of wages but also in housing, hospital, welfare, and other obligations that a company accepts when a new man is added to the payroll; (2) to prepare for recurrent periods of manpower shortage, during which a well-designed plant can manage to get along with skeleton crews; (3) because a milling plant that must depend upon an inordinately large labor force for its operation and maintenance is certain to be inefficient in other respects, for many of the shortcomings in design that make necessary the excessive use of labor are generally not corrected merely by having too many men. A simple example of this is a poorly designed ore-feeding system: if this is inadequate to the extent that one man must be constantly unclogging feed chutes, it may help the situation to put two men or three at this task instead of one, but the feed rate will still be inconstant. First of the factors that affect labor saving is the location of the mill. This is often determined by transportation costs alone, and as a result the mill may be placed close to the mine regardless of the nature of the terrain. The designer must then adapt his layout to the conditions, favorable or not. This happens often at small properties, where capital investment may seem more important than operating expense. In most instances, however, a mill site carefully selected for the advantages it gives the designer in laying out the plant is the most economical in the long run, even if it involves a slight increase in cost of ore haulage.
