It seems a common opinion among metallographists that all light-gray inclusions seen with the microscope in polished sections of steel are manganese sulphide. Examples of this belief are continually appearing, as for instance in the paper by Dr. Henry Fay on manganese sulphide as a source of danger in steel railsll and in Lieutenant-Commander Cook's paper on Metallography of Steel for U. S. Naval Ordnance.² Slate- colored inclusions are considered to be silicates, and dove-gray inclusions, manganese sulphide. To show the danger in the latter unqualified assumption, it should be sufficient to examine the edge of any piece of steel that is covered with a fairly thick scale, and that has been polished in such a way as to prevent the scale from breaking away entirely below the polished surface. The effects of anisotropy and stratification on flow behavior and production performance of oil and gas wells have been studied by numerous authors.1-3 Lefkovits et al.l studied the performance of totally penetrated, stratified bounded reservoirs with no crossflow. Others have studied a similar problem, but with crossflow; Russell and Prats2 have summarized the findings of these papers. Muskat3 studied the steady-state behavior of liquid flow for a partially penetrating well in an anisotropic system and concluded that the productivity weakly depended on the directional permeability ratios (kz/kr>0.1). Nisle4 used the classical method of point source solution to the diffusivity equation to study the effect of partial penetration on pressure buildup of oil wells in an isotropic system. He found that the theoretical pressure buildup curves consisted of two straight lines, the one at early buildup times having a slope proportional to the flow capacity of the open interval (l-d)k, and the other having a slope proportional to the flow capacity of the entire formation hk,. Later Brons and Marting5 supplemented the findings of Nisle and concluded that partial penetration gave rise to a pseudo damage, which reflected itself as a skin factor in pressure buildup calculations. Using the pseudo skin, they calculated the impairment of productivity of the production wells, which agreed well with the results of Muskat.6 Pizzi et al.,? using an electrical analog of a stratified system, concluded that a high pseudo damage resulted if the reservoir was partially penetrated. Harriss studied the optimum spacing and arrangement of perforations in cased holes. Hantush9 derived an expression for pressure distribution in an unbounded reservoir with restricted flow entry. Seth10 extended Hantush's work to a bounded reservoir. Odehl1 has studied a similar problem for steady-state conditions. The purpose of this work was to investigate: (1) the combined effects of anisotropy, stratification with crossflow, and restricted flow entry on pressure transient analysis of flow and buildup tests, (2) the feasibility of calculating the horizontal permeabilities of intercommunicating stratified systems, and (3) the pressure interference tests in such systems. Present-day interest in the question of "dirty steel" has arisen primarily from the increasingly rigid specifications on various grades of steel and from the growing conviction that non-metallic inclusions are the source of many of the difficulties in meeting these specifications. The importance of inclusions has unquestionably been over-emphasized in many cases, but on the other hand many unpublished instances could be recorded where all evidence pointed to inclusions as the primary cause for the failure of steel in rolling or in service. The solution of the problem of dirty steel is not a matter of a few years. There are almost numberless types of inclusions. They segregate in steel ingots in an entirely different manner from other impurities, and, at best, only a start has been made in developing correct analytical methods for their determination. Most of the writers in the field have expressed opinions rather than given facts, and so many variables enter into the manufacture of steel that a study of plant conditions is difficult unless definite facts on certain phases of the inclusion problem are available. This statement is not intended to convey the idea that little work has been done on this problem. On the other hand, the number of investigations has been large, but in most cases too many variables have been present to allow definite conclusions to be drawn. In the body of the text, reference to previous investigations is made at suitable points. Rather than burden the reader with a lengthy review of the literature on the general subject of inclusions, reference to the particular works pertinent to the subject matter of the bulletin has been discussed. A method is described in which particulate iron, as distinguished from high purity iron powders used in powder metallurgy, is a precipitant for copper contained in dilute solutions. A new precipitation apparatus utilizes particulate iron precipitants to recover copper more efficiently than is possible in a conventional launder precipitation plant. In the search for lower cost methods of recovering copper from mine water, the use of sponge iron or particulate iron (as distinguished from iron powder used in powder metallurgy) as precipitants in place of tin cans, detinned scrap iron, or scrap iron is an intriguing possibility. The relatively faster copper precipitation rate obtained with particulate iron as compared to scrap iron promises economic and processing advantages when, and if, particulate iron becomes competitive cost-wise with available scrap iron. Kennecott has developed a precipitation cone,' see Fig. 1, utilizing various particulate iron precipitants and has demonstrated the process successfully in a prototype at a flow rate of approximately 1000 gal of solution per min. Essentially complete precipitation of copper is obtained, the cone overflow solution is clear and contains no particulate copper, and the iron factor is more favorable than in a conventional launder plant. Initially, sponge iron produced at the Ray Mines Div. Kennecott Copper Corp. for use in a Leach-Precipitation-Flotation process was used in exploratory tests to develop a suitable apparatus to take advantage of the rapid precipitation rate and efficient iron utilization for the recovery of copper from dilute solutions. Here it was demonstrated that, when sponge iron was added to a launder, the particles of iron collected in the bottom of the launder and tended to cement together. This resulted in incomplete precipitation of the copper and inefficient utilization of the iron. Next, sponge iron was suspended in glass columns to study the dynamics of the precipitation reaction. Again it was observed that the particles tended to cement together at low solution flow rates, while at higher flow rates large amounts of the precipitant overflowed the column, resulting in loss of precipitant and an inefficient process. Next, the precipitant was suspended in an inverted cone in a rising column of solution. Dynamic suspension of the solids was maintained at relatively rapid solution flow rates with instantaneous and complete precipitation of copper and with improved iron utilization. The first tests were conducted on a batch basis and it was determined that a dynamically suspended bed of precipitant was necessary for satisfactory operation. More than 99% of the metallic iron could be converted to metallic copper by careful control of the residence time in the cone and copper precipitation was essentially complete, even when the available iron precipitant was almost depleted. Several cones were built, ranging in capacity from 1 to 200 gal of feed solution per min, and finally, a prototype cone was constructed which was 20-ft high

As part of its overall goal to maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, investigated the feasibility of producing subsieve-size material by an attrition grinding method. The Bureau-patented technique employed intense agitation of a mixture of the material to be ground, a granular grinding media, and a suspending fluid. A variety of materials were successfully ground to extremely fine particle sizes. Studies were made to determine the method's efficiency in grinding industrial minerals and metals to minus 2 micrometers and ceramic powders to an average particle size of 500 angstroms. Transfer of this technology to a commercial scale has been achieved. Commercial-scale units are currently being used in the paper-coating clay and titania pigment industries.

LAVES and Wallbaum' reported that the phases occurring at the compositions TiFe, TiRu, and TiOs, which are stable over a wide range of temperatures and are separated from neighboring phases by wide two phase fields, have a CsC1-type ordered structure. For TiRu and TiOs, this was recently confirmed by C. B. Jordan.2 Recent results of Greenfield and Beck3 show that solid solutions with ruthenium of the body-centered-cubic elements vanadium and tantalum (and presumably also of colum-bium) in group Va of the periodic table undergo CsC1-type ordering. Although detailed phase diagrams for these systems are not yet available, it would appear that these ordered structures are separated from the neighboring body-centered-cubic solid solutions by relatively narrow two phase fields.

Introduction A successful step towards mechanisation of the collier's work was taken in 1954 when the first Anderton shearer loader was commissioned in Lancashire, and progress was reinforced in 1956 when the first powered supports were installed in Nottinghamshire. By 1970, virtually 100% of the coalfaces in the United Kingdom were mechanised and the industry's productivity had doubled. In 1961 the National Coal Board recognised that the next move towards greater productivity and improved safety would be to automate the longwall system. What was not well enough understood, however, was that the basic prerequisites of automation - reliability and measurement - had not yet been achieved. Consequently, the schemes for automatic longwall faces and for an entirely automated colliery were abandoned at the close of the decade. A review of mining research and development policy, commissioned by the Board in 1974, confirmed that the system of longwall mining had great potential for investment and that the short-term policy of automation must once again be pursued. Since then, aided by advances in computer technology, systems for automating the transport of coal from the face to the coal preparation plant have been successfully instituted. Applications of sub-systems dealing with the conveyor, coal preparation plant, and various items of fixed plant are now at the exploitation stage. In the medium term, a number of key problems have been identified, which will arise once the productivity from the coalfaces has doubled, as it is now expected to do in the next five years. One of the most important of these problems is machine guidance, and considerable research and development work is now being carried out in this area. This paper reviews the work on machine guidance prior to 1974 and explains the programme on which the National Coal Board's Mining Research and Development Establishment is currently working.

A brief review of today's processing of integvated circuits is given. The major trends in the development of advanced integvated electronics are identified as 1) the broadening of the integvated circuit concept to a large class of circuit function, 2) the processing of more complex circuits within relatively small chips of silicon, and 3) the processing of very large electronic functions on complete slices of silicon. This latter trend, called array technology, is then developed in detail. Emphasis is given to defining the key tech-nological problems. Current progress being made is illustrated. THIS paper will endeavor to identify the major trends in advanced integrated electronics technology. One of these, array technology, will be developed in some detail. The array technology discussion will identify the key problem areas. Since it is the scope of the entire meeting' to present specific progress in the science and technology of integrated electronics, we shall indicate general directions being explored rather than discuss comprehensively solutions to the problems. In order to set the stage for the discussion of future trends in integrated-electronics technology, let us briefly compare the processes by which circuits are fabricated through discrete-device technology with that of integrated circuits technology. The reader is referred to the December 1964 issue of Proceedings of IEEE2 for a comprehensive review of integrated electronics. The article3 by Jay Lathrop is an excellent discussion of integrated-circuits technology. A discussion of the history of semiconductor technology is contained in Ref. 4. A) Current Status of Integrated Electronics. Fig. 1 (top) shows the process by which circuits are constructed from discrete devices. Key points are: 1) Slices containing large numbers of transistors or diodes are processed separately. 2) The slices are scribed into small chips (on the order of 15 mils on a side is about as small as can be conveniently handled) each chip containing one transistor. 3) Each device is specified separately—circuit -function specs are derived largely from device specs. 4) Circuits are formed by connecting together the discrete devices. 5) The number of circuit connections required is approximately equal to the number of devices. 6) There are potentially many more discrete devices per inch2 of semiconductor—only our lack of ability to handle them in discrete form prevents us from going to several orders of magnitude higher density iin Fig. 1, 400,000 transistors are discussed at 1.5 mils on a side). The bottom part of Fig. 1 illustrates the integrated circuit process. Key points are: 1) On the same slice of silicon, transistors, diodes, and resistors are processed grouped to do a complete circuit function. 2) While still in slice form, the components are interconnected into circuit functions by an evaporation process, eliminating the need for separate interconnection steps later. Dramatic improvements in cost and reliability are realized. With a simple flash of metalization thousands of interconnections are reliably made. 3) The slices are scribed into chips which contain complete circuit functions. 4) The circuit functions are specified-not each component in the circuit. This important point was missed by some of the early opponents to integrated circuitry. They argued that, with device yields at x pct, integrated circuit yields would be pct, where n is the required number of devices to make a circuit. This argument leads to extremely low yields for integrated circuits. The fallacy of the argument is that in integrated circuits each device is not specified separately. Furthermore, since a device is forever integrated into a specific circuit function, it need meet only the requirements for that particular function. Discrete devices, on the other hand, are tightly specified so that they can be applied to a variety of circuit functions. 5) Extremely high packing densities are achievable because one need only make the basic devices as large as the circuit demands. Under the title, Labor-Saving Appliances in the Works-Laboratory, I published a paper1 in which mas described how multi-manipulations in a works-laboratory and in the furnace-room of an assay-laboratory, can be condensed into single manipulations by applying the proper mechanical devices. For example, I now deposit ill, or withdraw from, a muffle a set of 48 cupels as one unit. The front row (8) of these are blanks or heaters; the other 40, when they have attained the proper temperature in the muffle, are charged simultaneously with the 40 lead-buttons. Three manipulations here accomplish an operation which by the generally customary method requires 136, and this number is only limited by the size of muffle and cnpels. This operation is an enlargement of what I have already described in my former paper, and Fig. 1 shows the improved implements. In the paper referred to I described a gold-silver bead parting-bath, which is the last of the devices used in regular sequence in practice. This bath mas designated as being convenient, but mas not a labor-saver properly. Fig. 2 of the present paper shows a new device. Instead of the original tray, there are now sectional holders for the test-tubes, each having a wooden handle on either end, so that the holders ma?-be removed from the boiling bath, and the acid or water poured oE from each set of tubes (in this case, 7) without waiting to cool. The tubes, held in place by clutches, as shown in Pig. 3, rest in holes in the base-strip, having a smaller diameter than the tubes. Each holder is stamped at either end with a number, so that the bath becomes further useful by permitting several men to use it at the same time without interference. Apart from the handles, the holders are made of sheet-copper.

These iron mines of Spain are located on the mountain ridge forming the boundary between the Teruel and Guadalajara provinces, called Sierra Menera. They form a property of 25 mines extending over an area of 1,677 hectares (4,140 acres) situated at a height varying from 1,200 m. (3,940 ft.) to 1,500 m. (4,920 ft.) above sea level. The deposit follows the direction north to south; huge masses of ore are being found both on the slopes and at the summit of the Sierra. The ore occurs among quartzites and magnesite limestone, in some places overlaid by quartzite 15 m. (50 ft.) thick; in some others (and this is more general) the ore is overlaid by earth and boulders of quartzite origin; this layer is about 8 m. (26 ft.) thick. The ore beds occupy the geological horizon of the Superior Trias or Muschelkask, which are here in direct contact with the Silurian quartzites. The lime-stones have been more or less transformed. There is ample evidence to show that these mines were worked in very ancient times—objects and tools employed in mining by the ancient Romans and Arabs are to be found plentifully in old workinigs which extend down into the deposits. It has been estimated that more than 10,000,000 tons of ore were mined in the old days in this district and carried to the primitive forges in the vicinity where iron of much renown in Spain was extracted. Remains of more than 20 of these forges are found in the neighborhood of Sierra Menera and are usually situated near waterfalls and forests. Much investigation has been carried on for the purpose of determining the quantity of ore to be found in these mines, but no exact calculations can be made at present. When the investigation is completed it will surely be found that the deposit contains a much larger quantity than the 100,000,000 tons indicated by the present workings. The mines are now worked as open quarries and this method can and will be followed for a long time, probably until the deposit is worked out. Figs. 1 and 2 give some idea of the quarries in operation and the reserves, the iron-ore stocks, screening installation and general arrangement. The work described in this paper is sponsored by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of accelerating the drilling of roof bolt holes and reducing the quantity of materials needed to fill each hole. A high-speed, small-hole drill has been fabricated and tested in the laboratory. High Priority has been given to safety, reliability, and compatibility with underground coal mining practice. The combination of drag bits and erosion jets is designed for high penetration rate, long wear life, and uniform hole size in a variety of sedimentary strata. A reliable high-pressure, high-speed swivel feeds water to the bit at about 4 L/min (1 gpm). The duplex hydraulic intensifier which drives the jets has a 40-kW (30-hp) capacity. Results of recent full-scale laboratory testing (Now. 1977) are presented.

WITH the growing interest in the mechanism of self-diffusion of metals, the study of accurate and convenient methods for determining self-diffu-sion coefficients appears highly desirable. It was with this objective in mind that the present investigation was undertaken. Gatos and Azzam1 employed an autoradiographic technique for measuring self-diffusion coefficients of gold. This method involved sectioning of the specimen through the diffusion zone and recording the radioactivity directly on a photographic film. Because of the very short range of the emitted ß rays in gold, the activity recorded on the film was essentially the true surface activity. With proper choice of the sectioning angle, sufficient resolution could be obtained and the entire concentration-distance curve recorded in one measurement. For the boundary conditions of the experiment, where an infinitesimally thin layer of radioactive material diffuses in positive and negative directions into the end faces of a rod of infinite length, the solution of the diffusion equation is C/Cn = 1/v4pDt exp (-x2/4Dt) where C is the concentration of diffusing element (photographic density in this case), C,, is the constant (depending upon amount of radioactive material), x is the diffusion distance, D is the diffusion coefficient, and t is the time. Thus, by plotting the logarithm of the concentration vs the square of the diffusion distance, a straight line results and the slope contains the diffusion coefficient. In this manner, the self-diffusion coefficient of gold can be obtained as a function of temperature. In the present investigation the results reported by Gatos and Azzam1 have been verified, and the autoradiographic technique has been further developed and applied for the determination of the self-diffusion coefficient of gold at a number of temperatures. Furthermore, the energy of activation for the self-diffusion of gold has been conveniently determined. . Experimental Techniques Preparation of Specimens: The inert gold of high purity was received in the form of a rod from which cylinders were cut and machined to a diameter of 0.500 in. The specimens were annealed to a suitably large grain size and the faces were surface ground prior to the deposition of the radioactive layer. The radioactive isotope Au198 was chosen. It was produced in the Brookhaven pile by means of the reaction Au197 + n ? Au108. It decays by ß emission (0.96 mev) to Hg108 with the subsequent emission of a y ray (0.41 mev). 70Au 108 ? 80Hg 108 + -1e°. The half life of the Au108 is 2.7 days so that a strict time schedule had to be maintained in order to secure sufficient activity until the end of the experiments. For this reason, initial activities as high as 10,000 millicuries per gram were used. The gold arrived in the form of foil and was evaporated onto one face of each gold specimen cylinder to a thickness of about 100A. A sandwich-type specimen was formed by welding two such cylinders together. Evaporation of Gold: The gold was evaporated under vacuum from heated tantalum strips which were bent in such a way as to limit the solid angle through which the gold was allowed to vaporize, thus insuring a more efficient utilization of the gold. The specimens rested on flat brass rings which had an inner diameter of 0.475 in. The entire specimen-holding assembly could be manipulated from outside the vacuum system by means of a magnet which attracted a slug of soft iron attached to the assembly. By evaporating inert gold on glass slides under conditions identical to those employed for the radioactive gold, it was found that the thickness of the films was about 100A. Welding: The welding was performed by hot pressing in a stainless steel cylinder. The inside of the cylinder was threaded and fitted for two plugs. The specimens to be welded were placed in the middle of the cylinder and two pressing disks, one at each end, were inserted to avoid shearing stresses as the plugs were tightened. Mica disks were placed between the pressing disks and the specimens to prevent them from welding. The plugs were then tightened with a hand wrench and the entire unit was placed in an argon stream for about an hour to remove the oxygen. The unit was then inserted in the center of an argon atmosphere furnace maintained at about 700°C and left there for about an hour. Because of the difference in the temperature coefficient of expansion of the two metals, as the temperature rose. the pressure on the specimen-rollple increased and a weld resulted Welding was generally satisfactory under the conditions described.

An investigation has been made to determine the applicability of the Cendrex X-ray instrument for the measurement of the ash contents of washed bituminous coal products. The results obtained for selected products from five preparation plants in the northern Appalachian region are described. Emphasis of the study was placed on low-ash bituminous coals suit-able for utility or metallurgical markets. There was good agreement between the results obtained by conventional ash determination methods and by the Cendrex for all the products tested. A principal disadvantage of coal in competition with other fuels has been its inconsistent quality, especially with respect to ash content. Mine rnechanization and production from coalbeds of inferior quality have accentuated this failing. Present quality control methods in coal preparation plants are inadequate because (1) control samples taken over a production shift only serve to give the average quality of the product, (2) conventional sampling and analysis data are usually not available at the time a shipment is scheduled, and (3) the plant operator does not have the use of such data when the coal is being processed so that operating conditions may be adjusted for correcting variations in quality. Thus, the development and use of continuous-control monitoring instruments is of prime importance. The Federal Bureau of Mines arranged to investigate an instrument using x-rays for rapid continuous ash determinations. Developed by the Dutch State Mines and first described in 1958,' this instrument, which has found widespread acceptance in Europe, is designed to provide ash analysis of any desired coal feed or product stream with only a five-minute time lag between sample collection and analytical results. With limit controls, this unit could be used to feed back signals to preset the separating gravity of coal washers, control the ratio of various coals needed to produce an acceptable blend, and permit the sorting of a washed product into two qualities, one which is below and the other which is above a prescribed ash content. This unit can also be used discontinuously for rapid determination of coal samples taken in the usual manner. THEORY Di jkstra and Sieswerda of the Dutch State Mines studied the effect of chemical composition and ash content on the absorption coefficient of coal with the transmitted radiation method.' They found that with an X-ray wavelength of 1.79 A and values calculated for the absorption coefficients of ash and combustibles, the absorption coefficient of coal gave a linear relationship when plotted against the ash content. Thus, a method of measuring the absorption coefficient of coal could also be used to measure the ash content. However, practical attempts to measure the ash content of coal by comparing the intensities of the transmitted X-rays failed. The absorption coefficient of coal can also be obtained by irradiating a layer of coal with x-rays and measuring the intensity of the diffused reflection (backscatter method). The relationship between the diffused reflection and the ash content is actually hyperbolic but approximates a straight line over a narrow range. A measuring circuit that balanced the difference in intensity of the reflected radiation from a standard surface against that from a coal sample was used. By plotting this difference of reflected radiation against the ash content, a curve which approximated a straight line over a range of 8 percentage points of ash was obtained. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT The apparatus performs two distinct functions: (1) the preparation of the sample to a suitable size consist and moisture content for delivery to the x-ray element, and (2) the measurement of the ash content by the x-ray element. In a continuous operation the coal sample is delivered to a conditioner where it is dried to a maximum of 1% surface moisture and pulverized in a high speed mill to -48-mesh. This material is fed, at a rate of 250-300 gpm onto a rotating disk, shown in Fig. 1, where it is mixed with material already present. The mixture is rotated on the disk and
