Although the Siemens regenerator principle was introduced into byproduct coke-oven design about 40 years ago, many problems of construction, and particularly of heat distribution and pressure conditions, have not been fully solved. Heat should be applied to the walls of a coke oven in such a way that the coking of the charge of coal will be completed everywhere at the same time, and at approximately the same temperature. This means that the application of heat should be uniform from the top to the bottom of the coal mass (except for the thin layer at the top that is purposely kept at a somewhat lower temperature to reduce cracking of the byproducts); also that a little more heat must be applied to the coke end than to the pusher end, because the coal mass is a little thicker at that end. As a modern coke oven is about 40 ft. long and 12 ft. high, a real problem is involved in the proper application of heat to the oven walls so as to secure quick coking time (without endangering the walls through local overheating) and produce coke made at a uniform temperature. Design of Ovens In all regenerative ovens, the points of combustion are arranged in duplicate sets, one set operating in one-half the area of the heating wall and the other set alternately operating in the other half. Because of the reversal of the flow of gases, the points of maximum and minimum temperatures are alternately located at the same places, thus preventing dangerous local overheating. The practicability of the principle of reversal of flow seems to have been recognized at an early date, and has been applied with every conceivable flue arrangement, combustion chamber, and means of air and gas supply. To summarize the various principles that have proved useful for the control of oven-wall temperature, the best practice seems to have resulted from the acceptance of the use of vertical flues; the separate supply of air and gas to the base of these flues, with the resulting flame

BY taking advantage of the fundamental difference between screening and classification-namely, that specific gravity has no effect on screening but is one of the important factors in classification-a combination of the two may be used as a process of mineral concentration. Although this fact is not new, so far as is known it has had little or no commercial application. The scheme is not presented now as a process for producing finished products but rather as a preliminary operation rejecting part of the barren material from an ore before it is subjected to more costly treatment. That is largely the function of the new heavy-media concentration processes that have been widely accepted. Original installation costs for the present sink-float processes are relatively high, however, which confines their use to operations where large tonnages are handled. Sink-float has been successful on only the relatively coarse (approximately plus 10-mesh) portion of an ore, and it is in this same range that classification screening can function most satisfactorily. Theoretically, there is no upper limit to the size of particles that can be handled in a sink-float operation, but the degree of liberation in the very large pieces usually limits this. With classification screening, particles from 3/8 to 1/2 in. would be the largest that could be handled, but the lower range could be extended somewhat below 10 mesh. In order to take full advantage of the difference in specific gravities of the minerals being separated, sorting in the classifier should be under as extreme hindered-settling conditions as possible. Laboratory tests have been made on a galena ore and on an artificial mixture of quartz and magnesite to determine the separations that may be expected. Although more than one scheme may be followed, in these tests the separations were made by cutting the underflow from the classifier as a concentrate and then screening the overflow. The screen oversize was rejected as a tailing. Classification was done in a hindered-settling teeter column and screening was done by hand, using the standard [v2]series. DISPERSION hardening as an alloying process has aroused increasing interest in the past few years. This alloying procedure, in which an insoluble phase is dispersed randomly through a metal or alloy, is believed to be especially suited for the attainment of creep strength at elevated temperatures since the dispersed phase is metallurgically stable. Another advantage is that the physical properties of the matrix phase, such as electrical conductivity, remain relatively unaffected by alloying. These two characteristics resulted in interest in the applicability of dispersion hardening to copper and copper alloys. A study of copper alloys prepared by powder metallurgy methods has shown some strengthening from oxide dispersions.' However, powder metallurgy processing would not be economical for large scale production of dispersion hardened copper-base alloys. Therefore, the research described in this article was initiated to examine methods of forming dispersion alloys which would not require powder metallurgy processing. If powder metallurgy processing is to be avoided, a method must be found by which the dispersion material can be introduced into and dispersed through the melt before casting. When the dispersed phase is an oxide or similar nonmetallic, it is extremely difficult to form a satisfactory liquid: solid dispersion since successful mixing requires that the melt wet the dispersed phase. It is almost impossible to force a nonwetted particle beneath the melt surface. This difficulty can be avoided, however, if the oxide particles are produced in molten copper by reaction within the melt. The problem would then reduce to maintaining randomness until solidification. Four procedures were considered for producing an oxide particle within molten copper by reaction. In all cases, the intent was to react oxygen (0) with a reactive metal (X) to form an oxide (XO) within the copper melt. These reactions were as follows: 1) (Cu-X), + (O)g (Cu)1 + (XO)S [1] 2) (Cu-X)1 + (Cu2O)s (Cu)x + (XO)S [2] 3) (Cu-OK)1 + (Cu-X)1 (Cu)1+(XO)9 [3] 4) (Cu-OK)1 +(X)s (Cu)1 +(XO)s [4] The reactions were carried out in an 8-lb melt of 99.98 pct Cu maintained in the vicinity of 2200oF by induction heating. Where possible the amount of the reactants was controlled to give 1 to 5 vol pct oxide. Mechanical stirring during the reaction period was used to minimize agglomeration of the reaction product. The presence of a reaction product was determined metallographically by study of an ingot cast from the melt at the end of the reaction period. Reaction [I] was studied by dissolving aluminum in the melt followed by forcing oxygen through the melt. The melts became quite sluggish during the reaction period suggesting that A12O3 was formed. However, the reaction product rose out of the melt rapidly, possibly due to the flushing action of the oxygen stream, and little dispersed phase was formed. Reaction [2] was examined by dissolving aluminum, silicon, or nickel i; the melt and then adding Cu20 (melting point 2250F). This procedure was unsuccessful. A system for making political forecasts, called the Prince System, and a series of charts relaying risks to a production of key minerals has been developed.

This paper discusses recent technology dealing with the use of computer graphics in the mining industry. It presents a newly developed computer software package specifically designed for use in underground mining operations. This software package, developed under a US Bureau of Mines contract, 1) displays mine ventilation schematics and other representative illustrations for a real time data acquisition system and 2) uses the Bureau-owned Minefire and Ventilation Code for display of ventilation and contamination predictions on the microprocessor system. The package uses a unique system of display indexing that provides a simple yet efficient method of recalling a series of mine schematics detailing an underground operation and an alarm acknowledgment scheme that provides an effective method of identifying problem areas that may exist in the mine network. The package was written in Fortran for a 64-kilobyte, Z80-based microprocessor computer.

PRobably the earliest concentration of iron ore in this country was carried on in the northeastern magnetite areas. Magnetic concentration was relatively simple and gave a concentrate that, after agglomeration, and in spite of beillg high in phosphorus hecause of the dry concentrating methods then in use, was satisfactory blast-furnace feed. Production from the northeastern magnetitc area languished after the discovery and development of the Lake Superior ores, where there was seemingly an unlimited tonnage of high-grade ore, first the Michigan ores, and subsequently the still larger deposits of Minnesota. For years only the higher grade, direct shipping ores of the Lake superior district were mined. Those of Michigan, and of the Vermilion Range in Minnesota, were hard ores and came principally from underground mines. The softer ores of the Mesabi came partly from underground mincs, but mostly from the enormous deposits that could be worked by open-pit methods. The costs of ore from these open-pit deposits, even with the high initial cost of stripping, were so low that the underground mines of the Mesabi could hardly compete. The so-called Old Range ores, of Michigan and of the Vermilion Range of Minnesota, were hard and lumpy, and opened UP the burden in the blast furnace, therefore making possible harder driving with greater output. Also, some of these Ores were of such grade and physical characteristics that they were suitable for charge ore in the open hearth. These ores, therefore, commanded a price premium. and could compete with the softer, finer, but cheaper, Mesabi ores. The big tonnage reserves, however, are on the Mesabi. and it is these big open-pit deposits that contitue- our stock pile of iron ore, from which we are drawing so heavily during this war period. On the western end of the Mesabi the ore was found to be high in silica, and not suitable as furnace feed. As early as 1902, attempts were made to concentrate this so-called wash ore and by 1910 the first washing plant was put into operation. The Process was very simple, consisting essentially of a sizing and washing operation, with scalping screens, logwashers and tables, which later were replaced by classificrs. Ore particles finer than I00 mesh were deliberately wasted, because these fines were undesirable in the furnace. Fortunately, these tailings were impounded, and already are being reworked. Before long some of the low-grade ores began to require more elaborate treatment than the simple washing operation and, tables having been discarded because of their low capacity, in favor of classifiers, jigs were next introduced. These were able to discard coarser pieces of tailing than classifiers. Jigs are in active use today, various improvements having been made in their design and application. Various other machines and methods of concentration have been tried from time to time, and have in turn been discarded for more improved processes., The latest and most important process that has been 38

For more than 80 years the Bessemer process has depended upon the ability, skill, and judgment of the blower, although as early as the I860's it was recognized that the process would benefit by some type of instrumental contro1.l IIowever, instruments with sufficient recording speeds did not exist, so the end-point determination was always dependent upon the blower's eye. This placed an obstacle in the way of precise experimental work, because of the absence of the necessary records and reference points as reported by Work.2 The use of the photocell provided the instantaneous record of the blow that made this experimental work possible and provided more scientific control for the process as discussed by Graham,3 A brief description of the progress of the blow will illustrate the recording function of the instrument. The silicon in the iron is being oxidized during the first minutes of the blow, as pointed out by Henning4 in a table showing the order of metalloid elimination. The product of this oxidation is a solid that remains in the converter, so there is virtually no flame during this part of the blow. This low flame luminosity is illustrated by the flame recording shown in Fig. I, where the silicon blow is plainly marked. The dull flame of the silicon blow gradually gives way to the brilliant carbon flame as the increasing quantities of carbon monoxide formed inside the converter burn to dioxide upon contact with the atmosphere above the vessel. When the carbon reaches some low value under 0.20 per cent, there is insufficient menoxide formed to maintain the dioxide flame, so its intensity drops. Throughout the flame drop carbon continues to burn, until at some value around 0.05 per cent an arrest occurs in the recorded drop. This point has been designated as the end point. The period of time from this end point until the vessel is turned upon its side and blowing has stopped has been called the afterblow. This afterblow is used as a measure of the degree of metal oxidation, and uniformity demands that it be controlled within narrow limits. Iron and blowing conditions are likely to change several times during a turn, necessitating corresponding changes in end-point control. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss these changes, the factors that make them necessary, and their bearing upon the quality of steel. Carbon-FeO Relationship In the Bessemer process oxidation relationships are precise. Fig. 2 shows a graph of the carbon-FeO relationship. The familiar "bomb-test" method, described by Mccutcheon and Rautio,5 was used for obtaining these and all other dissolved FeO values herein reported, all tests being taken from the converter before deoxidation unless otherwise noted. All tests of 0.10 per. cent carbon and above were obtained from metal blown for duplexing. McGinley and Woodworth6 reported iron oxide values for blown metal, but their tests were obtained by a . different method than were those

The orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) are located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, central British Columbia. The area in and around Gibraltar Mines has a moderate topographic relief with elevations between 3500 and 4100 ft. The property is 95% covered by overburden which varies in depth from a few feet to 230 ft. Early History and Geology The present Gibraltar Mines property before amalgamation consisted of the Pollyanna property (Duval-Canex) and the Gibraltar property (original Gibraltar Mines) as well as some Coast Silver and McLeese Lake Copper claims.

THE life of refractory linings in rotary cement kilns can be shortened by uneven or inadequate support of the kiln and its shell and by variations in the conditions of operation. Alteration of these factors may, according to their nature, bring about mechanical deterioration of the lining or promote chemical attack. Chemical attack has been described elsewhere.1-4 The distortion of cement kilns has been discussed in a general manner by Rochow,6 ho indicates the amount of distortion which may occur in an unlined shell, and by Rosenblad: who states that the deformations of the shell are greatest above the trunnions. The present article indicates the extent of the distortion of a kiln to an oval shape in certain selected positions and the deviation from a straight line of the kiln along its length between two supports. The cement kiln is a long, hollow, rotating cylinder consisting of steel plates which may be either welded or riveted together. This shell is supported on tires, frequently 60 ft apart, which roll on trunnions. The large mass of the kiln causes distortion of its cross-section; it becomes slightly oval, i.e., diameters lengthen as they become horizontal and shorten as they become vertical. There is also a tendency for the shell to bow between supporting tires; this bowing may be upwards or downwards depending on the position of the weight forces and the supports. The extent of the deviations from the ideal kiln shape was investigated. Observations described in this paper were made on the shell of the clinkering zone between the first and second tires of two of the kilns at the Geelong works of Australian Portland Cement Pty. Ltd. The kilns were both 400 ft long and 10 ft diam with a welded enlarged burning zone 11 ft 6 in. diam. The shell was fabricated from mild steel and in this section its thickness was 1 in. It was lined with 41/2 in. of chemically bonded magnesite-chrome bricks which were jointed with mild steel plates. The kilns operate on a 4 pct slope and the speed may be varied between 0.75 and 1.68 rpm. The wet process is used; kilns are coal fired and are fitted with integral coolers. Temperatures within the kiln are difficult to determine with any accuracy because of the absence of black body conditions, but surface temperatures are probably in the range 1420° to 1470°C. Average shell .temperatures at the two positions at which the deformation studies were made were 370°C and 355"C respectively. Methods: In determining the ellipticity it was necessary to measure the lengths of the vertical and horizontal diameters while the kiln was in operation; data obtained from a stationary kiln would not have the same practical significance. For this purpose the four points V, W, X, and Y at the ends of two mutually perpendicular diameters were marked on one kiln. The point X is shown in Fig. 1. For the measurement of the length of the vertical diameter a vertical column, to which a horizontally aligned telescope was attached, was placed 10 ft from the kiln. Before the present company was formed, in 1916, each group of mines comprising the old organizations made its detailed daily and monthly mine cost records along the lines used before the consolidation; that is, there was no attempt made to standardize and compare the stope costs of all mines. The general cost sheets for all mines, however, were standardized, and cumulative labor cost sheets were compiled in the general superintendent's office. At most of the mines, a daily record or distribution sheet for each working place was kept, showing the number of men, hours of drilling, hours of timbering, hours of tramming, cars of ore, cars of waste, sticks of powder and feet of fuse. This information was kept by each shift boss and entered on the distribution sheet by him or, at some mines, by a tram boss. The superintendent solved his own problems under the direction of the general superintendent, but without coming in touch with other superintendents, either through records or general conferences. Probably 95 per cent. of the stopes were square-set worked by day's pay; there were some back-filling and shrinkage stopes. Many of the development places, such as shaft sinking, station cutting, drifting and raises had always been run by contract. These contracts were given, for no definite period, at so much per linear foot and were measured monthly, or when completed, the men being paid monthly. In some cases, fairness to the employee was not maintained. On the whole, there was no standardization. There were no stope contracts, because of the objections of the Western Federation of Miners to general contracting in the mines. Changes in Stoping Methods Early in 1916, W. B. Fox the past fifty years or more, the structural features of the Cordilleran mountain system of western United States have presented some most interesting problems. Any geologist or engineer living in this region, or even making occasional examinations. of the mines, will lose much of interest and importance if he is not familiar with the literature. Some of the greatest works on geology have been the, result of studies carried on in sections of this region. Among the more important of the earlier works are those of Dutton,1. King,2 Gilbert,3 and Powell;4 of the more recent Lindgren,5 Ransome,6 Spurr,7 Butler,8 and others have contributed much. Many of the papers are largely of scientific interest but even these lay the foundation for the commercial application of the broader features of the geology. I have read many of these works with the keenest interest and pleasure; in fact, some have been read until some of the more important findings seem to be my own. In this paper, however, it is my aim to accept credit for little more than the labor of assembling some of the ideas of others. This is done with the hope that an interesting and valuable discussion will be the result. If some of the ideas presented should

The plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, situated at Risdon on the estuary of the River Derwent, near Hobart, was designed and erected primarily to produce high-grade zinc from zinc concentrates produced by the mines of Broken Hill, N. S. W. Consequently the metallurgy of the process has been influenced in its development by the peculiar characteristics of the Broken Hill concentrate, which on treatment gives into solution relatively large amounts of cobalt, manganese and silica. The Risdon works (Fig. 1) produces high-grade electrolytic zinc, leaded electrolytic zinc, zinc dust, cadmium, sulphuric acid and superphosphate. This paper, however, is concerned only with the zinc plant and process. Roasting The roasting of raw concentrate is not a major feature of Risdon's process, and in this respect practice is unlike that of most zinc plants. The roasting is mostly done on the Australian mainland at centers where the sulphuric acid made from the roaster gases can be used for superphosphate manufacture. A small amount, approximately 40 tons per day, is roasted at Risdon, acid being manufactured from the gases. The amount that can be roasted there is limited by the acid requirements of the zinc plant and of the superphosphate plant. Roasting is not carried to completion at the mainland plants, and the product, known as preroast calcine, largely constitutes the raw material for the Risdon zinc plant. It contains about 6 per cent of sulphur as sulphide. Roasting is completed at Risdon for reasons that are set out later in this paper. The zinc plant proper is divided into four main divisions: (1) final roasting division, (2) leaching and purification division, (3) electrolytic division, (4) melting and casting division. There are two subsidiary divisions—the cadmium division and the preroast, acid and superphosphate division.

The writer has dealt with the effect of various methods of melting copper upon the gas content of the metal.' The copper referred to in his earlier paper was melted in the foundry both in the oil furnace and the electric furnace. As the metal did not measure up to conductivity standard, the term "casting copper" was applied to the material in the title of the paper. It was thought that some information in regard to the gases in a sample of overpoled copper might also be of interest, and through the courtesy of C. R. Stevens, superintendent of the copper mill of the West-inghouse Elec. & Mfg. Co., such a sample was obtained. The metal was chill-cast in the form of an ingot about 7 in. long, 2 1/2 in. deep (from the base to the raised surface of the ingot) and from 1 3/8 to 1 7/8 in. wide. A photograph of part of the ingot is shown in Fig. 1. The effect of over-poling on the surface of the metal is here quite clearly shown.

Uranium-base alloys exposed to high temperature water fail either by uniform oxidation or by sudden cracking and disintegration of the metal. The disintegration results from the oxidation of a second phase which is precipitated during the corrosion process. The precipitate has been identified as a metastable hydride of uranium. URANIUM-BASE alloys consisting of the body-centered-cubic ? phase are susceptible to two different modes of corrosion failure when exposed to high temperature water. In the first process, a smooth oxide film is formed on the metal surface which continually flakes off during exposure and results in a uniform weight loss of the specimen. The oxide is present as a thin, adherent layer whose thickness remains approximately constant. As the metal oxidizes during corrosion, a nonadherent layer is built up on this film and continually sloughs off. Coincident with the uniform corrosion just mentioned, another process occurs which eventually leads to failure of the metal by cracking and general disintegration. The failure takes place during a relatively short time compared to the total exposure. To distinguish this type of failure from the uniform corrosion, the cracking or disintegration of the metal will be referred to as discontinuous failure. For the ? phase uranium alloys it is discontinuous failure rather than uniform corrosion that limits the useful corrosion life of the alloy. This paper will be concerned primarily with the mechanism of discontinuous failure. Physical Changes During Corrosion—The alloys used in this investigation were ? phase uranium alloys containing 7 to 12 wt pet Mo or Cb. The preparation of the alloys, the method of corrosion testing, and the actual corrosion results are presented in another paper.' The ? quenching treatment consists of annealing the alloy for 24 hr at 900°C in a sealed Vycor glass tube filled with helium and then water quenching to room temperature without breaking the tube. The corrosion behavior typical of a ? phase uranium alloy is shown in Fig. 1. This specimen was a U-12 wt pet Mo alloy tested in pressurized, degassed water at 650°F. The corrosion rate was practically constant at 0.28 mg per sq cm per hr or increased slightly until about 15 to 20 days of exposure, when the onset of discontinuous failure occurred in this particular sample, and the specimen soon began to crack and disintegrate. The simultaneous increase in the observed corrosion rate is a result of the increased area of exposure due to cracking of the specimen. The microstructure of a specimen that failed by cracking is shown in Fig. 2. The presence of a plate-like precipitate can readily be seen. Metallographic examination of corrosion specimens reveals that the onset of discontinuous failure is always preceded by the formation of a plate-like second phase in the ? uranium matrix. Hydrogen analyses of specimens periodically withdrawn from corrosion test reveal that the hydrogen content of the alloy increases on exposure to the high temperature water, as shown in Fig. 3. The hydrogen is available as a corrosion product resulting from the formation of UO2 by the reaction of the alloy with water. Specimens analyzed just prior to discontinuous failure contained as much as 1200 ppm H, whereas the plate-like phase appears to precipitate out at a hydrogen concentration of between 10 and 25 ppm. The observed increase in hydrogen content prior to and during the formation of the plate-like precipitate suggests that this constituent may be a hydride of uranium. Additional evidence linking the identity of this phase to a hydride is that it can be removed by vacuum annealing at temperatures of 100°C and above. Decomposition products of the ? phase would certainly not dissolve at such temperatures, nor could other likely products of corrosion, such as oxides, be dissipated at any of the test temperatures. The precipitation and growth of the second phase during corrosion is accompanied by an increase in hardness of the specimen. In a former paper on Western Smelting Works, I mentioned the great difficulty of obtaining accurate information in regard to the economy of the processes in practice; and to-day, although nearly two years have elapsed since my former paper was written, I am sorry to say that very little improvement has taken place in the keeping of accounts, and in the direction of a more systematic management in the majority of these works. But I am quite certain that by this time even the most sanguine furnace managers must have become convinced, from the experience of the last year, that somewhere in their processes there are enormous losses. Rates for the purchase of ores in 1873 were not as high as they were in former years in certain parts of the country ; labor was no 'higher than formerly; the demand for unparted lead was good throughout the year, with the only exception of the time of the panic, in the fall of 1873; yet there are, of between 40 and 50 works, not more than two or three in Utah and Nevada to-day, that have paid a reasonable interest on the capital invested.

Since the composition and structure of the beach sand concentrates correspond so closely to what would be expected of ilmenites that have been altered by oxidation and leaching, there is no reason to postulate the existence of the hypothetical compound, arizonite, to account for the composition of titaniferous beach sand concentrates. The four concentrates studied are examples of the different products that can result from various degrees of alteration of primary ilmenite. CONSIDERABLE uncertainty is revealed in the literature regarding the nature of the titanium minerals which make up the bulk of the heavy, opaque fractions of numerous beach sand deposits of the world. An investigation was made, therefore, of beach sand concentrates of North Carolina, Florida, Brazil, and India. Magnetic concentration, X-ray, and microscope data were obtained which show that these concentrates consist essentially of ilmenite and its alteration products. The alteration, brought about by oxidation and leaching of iron values, has resulted in upgrading the ores to a range of 56 to 64 pct TiO², as compared with 52.7 pct in ilmenite of theoretical composition. Conclusions drawn regarding the nature of the dominant titanium-bearing mineral in beach sand deposits have been based mainly on chemical composition, specific gravity, and petrography. This material has usually been referred to as ilmenite or weathered ilrnenite.: It has also been referred to as arizonite because in chemical composition it resembles an Occurrence in in which was described by Palmer' in 1909. The fifteen alloys investigated were melted in sealed wear lubes, sroaged, homogenized, and then analyzed, using the conventional isotope-plating plus lathe- sectiorzing teclzniqlte. The data obtaiued show that the difJusion coeflcient of the zinc isotope increases titlz increase in zinc content, and decreases t'itlz incease in nickel content. It is now generally recognized that diffusion data and theories are needed for multicomponent systems, where extensive practical developments and even some theoretical studies have already been made. For example, much recent work on precipitation from solid solution has been concerned with ternary solid solutions such as A-M-Z' while Zener relaxation has been studied on Au-Ag-Zn alloys,' although adequate diffusion data are available for neither of these systems. Actually, the only ternary systems for which systematic diffusion studies have been begun, in addi- tion to the one reported here, are CO-i-cr3 and Cu-A-Au. Since the theory of multicomponent diffusion is still in the stage of active development5 it is important to distinguish the various kinds of diffusion data that can be determined. An oversimplified approach, widely used prior to 1950, was to determine the influence of a third element, such as nickel, on the diffusion behavior of a binary alloy, such as CU-Z. Later it was recognized7 that four diffusion coefficients can be used to describe ordinary interdiffusion in a ternary system, while as many as six coefficients may be required to include the Kirkendall effect. It is likely that the number of independent coefficients will be shown to be less than four and six, respectively, through the application of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes.5 The simplest type of diffusion in a multicomponent system is tracer diffusion, since each component is characterized by its own tracer-diffusion coefficient in an alloy of a given composition. Thus, in a ternary alloy there are three tracer-diffusion coefficients, each a function of composition and temperature. The present research program is a study of tracer diffusion in the copper corner of the Cu-Ni-Zn system out to 30 at. pct each of Ni and Zn in a 150°C range of temperature just below the solidus temperature. Secretary's Note.—Mr. Bramwell was born in 1846, at Liverpool, England, his father being English, and his mother American, of Scotch ancestry. Brought to the United States in early childhood, he was educated at the public schools and graduated from the College of the City of New York. He subsequently studied his profession as a mining engineer at the Royal School of Mines, Berlin, Prussia, and was for a short time in the service of the Prussian government at Konigs hutte. Returning to this country in 1871, he was employed during succeeding years as mining engineer, chemist, and manager at various fnrnaces and iron works in Pennsylvania and the Southern States until, in 1883, he became actively engaged in the development of the Flat-Top coal-field of southwestern Virginia, in which region the town of Bramwell was named after him, in recognition of his services as a pioneer of the great industry which he did so much to promote. After prolonged and fluctuating ill-health, he died, July 13, 1894, at Paris, France. At the opening session of the Bridgeport meeting, the Secretary announced his death, and Mr. Pechin, being called upon, made the remarks reported below.— R. W. R. Widely as Joseph Herbert Bramwell was known, I. think I knew him somewhat better than any one else. After finishing his studies abroad, he came to this country, a very young man, seeking an engagement. This was about the beginning of 1871, as I remem ber, and I was then trying to make iron at Dunbar, at the foot of the Allegheny mountains, in Fayette county, Pa. His engaging manner and charming personnel, combined with his letters of intro duction, made me more than satisfied in securing his services as my chemist. At the outset we lived a sort of pioneer life, and for many months he was practically a member of my family, and the affection then formed remained unbroken to his dying day. I vividly recall the circular of April, 1871, signed by Eckley B. Coxe, R. P. Rothwell and Martin Coryell suggesting a meeting at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., for the purpose of forming the American Institute of Mining Engineers. At the last moment, prevented from going, I sent Bramwell; and I am more than glad that his name appears among those whose sagacity established an Institute that has become illustrious by reason of its numbers, the character of its members, its invaluable papers and its enormous influence for good

ALTHOUGH the corrosion resistance of magnesium and its alloys is closely related to iron content, there has been no direct measurement of the solid solubility of iron in magnesium. Bulian and Fahrenhors;1 and Mitchel]2 agree that pure iron or a limited terminal solid solution crystallizes from the Mg-rich liquid. For this reason a magnetic-moment method was selected to estimate that portion of the total iron content which is not in solid solution. Since iron in solid solution in magnesium cannot contribute to ferromagnetism, the difference between chemical and magnetic-iron analyses should yield the solid solubility. By experimentation it was found that the melting of pure sublimed magnesium (99.995 wt pet purity) in Armco-iron crucibles at about 800°C is a convenient way to introduce small amounts of iron. Melts retained 5, 10 and 20 min at 800°C analyzed 0.003,, 0.005,, and 0.018 & 0.001 weight pet Fe, respectively, after being stirred, heated to 850°C, and cast into graphite molds. The as-cast alloys were pickled in acid (dilute HC1 + HNO3), annealed at 600°C for 3 days, scalped on a lathe to remove the pitted surface, pickled again, extruded at about 100°C to 3-mm wire, reannealed 41/2 days at 500°C, and water-quenched. The specimens were again scalped, pickled, and used both for chemical and for magnetic analysis. Most of the precautions described were intended to prevent iron pickup by contact with tools or superficial iron enrichment by volatilization of magnesium during heat-treatment. It is believed that the specimens ultimately used for test were homogeneous and characteristic of phase equilibria at 500°C. Magnetic Analyses A susceptibility apparatus of the Curie type was used for magnetic analyses. Field strengths of up to 10,400 oersteds could be generated. By this method, an analytical balance measures the force of attraction which a calibrated magnetic field exerts on a suspended specimen. The force equation is as follows f/m = M dh/dy where f/m = force per unit mass of sample M = magnetic moment per unit mass dH/dy = magnetic field gradient The dH/dy characteristic of the instrument is determined by the use of a standard palladium sample, and the calibration is made independently for all values of H. Since a large finite field is required to saturate an assembly of ferromagnets, it is necessary to measure the apparent magnetic moment for increasing steps of H until a saturation value is obtained. The percentage of iron in the sample as free ferromagnetic iron may then be computed simply C= 100 (M1/M1) where C = percent content of undissolved iron in sample M1 = saturation magnetic moment of sample per unit mass M1 = saturation magnetic moment of iron per unit mass taken as 217 emu-cm per gm There is no serious difficulty in applying this method except for the unusual magnetic behavior of very fine particles of ferromagnetic substances. It has been found and is the basis for a widely accepted theory that with sufficient subdivision, the magnetic fields required to saturate and the coercive force after saturation rise to exceedingly high values. Recent work on precipitates of Fe and Co from copper solid solutions8 showed that about 5000 oersteds were necessary to approach saturation. The magnetic moments as a function of field strength measured in the present investigation are listed in Table I. Only the 0.018 wt pet Fe alloy yielded a magnetization curve with a fairly well-defined saturation plateau at 3.76x10 -2 emu-cm/ gm. This corresponds to 0.017 & 0.001 wt pet Fe in the alloy. This indicates that the solid solubility must be of the order of 0.001 wt pet Fe. The magnetic-moment data of the other two alloys are badly scattered, indicating that the amount of ferromagnetic iron in these samples is so low that the magnetic forces acting on them cannot be measured accurately by the analytical balance used. Nevertheless, the fact that even the 0.003, wt pet Fe alloy shows ferromagnetism indicates that the solid solubility must be below that value.
