THE application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and under varying climatic conditions, Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarine geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illus-trate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions.

INCLUSIONS of nonmetallic matter have long been recognized as objectionable in steel. A complete theory of the effect of inclusions, which is consistent with that held today, was outlined in Howe's early work on the metallurgy of iron and steel. This, by analogy with wrought iron, assumes that the observed difference in properties between specimens with and across the direction of rolling is due to slag enclosures. The fact that wrought iron shatters in ballistic test is taken as an indica-tion of the effect of inclusions on the resistance to shock. Since that time, the development of the metallurgical microscope has shown the discrete nonmetallic inclusions in the iron matrix. Better resolution has, brought out the great number of inclusions, and the availability of good microscopes in steel mills and laboratories has constantly drawn more attention to these inclusions. This recent emphasis on inclusions has resulted in studies as to their nature, mode of formation and methods of elimination, such as the work of Wohrman, Dickenson, Herty, and Schenk. In addition to the published works; many investigations which have not been published' have been carried out by private laboratories and have resulted in the application of specifications intended to limit inclusions in many qualities of steel. Nevertheless, a clear understanding of the quantitative effect of inclusions on the physical properties of steel has been lacking. It is the specific purpose of this study to determine the quantitative effect of inclusions on the physical properties of steel that determine its behavior under dynamic stress. The study has shown that a quantitative relation between counted inclusions and impact strength does exist in normalized steels, but 'that factors other than readily visible inclusions are equally important. Furthermore, the present commercial rating of inclusions is unreliable with respect to counted inclusions or dynamic tests, and this study indicates that the tensile-impact test is more reliable as a measure of quality.

A new electrical logging method called Laterolog is described which provides for better recording of formation resistivity. In this method a current, preferably of constant intensity, is forced into the formation perpendicularly to the wall of the hole as a sheet of predetermined thickness by means of a special electrode arrangement and of an autonlatic control system. The essential advantages of the Laterolog over the regular resistivity logs are explained. With the Laterolog, the mud column has much less influence than with conventional methods. The Laterolog is, therefore. particularly useful in wells drilled with highly conductive mud. Moreover. when the electrode system is located opposite a bed of moderate or small thickness, the disturbing effect of the adjacent formations becomes practically eliminated, provided the bed is thicker than the sheet of current. which itself is usually a few inches to a few feet thick. The sequences of beds are. therefore, much more sharply differentiated, and, in many cases, it is possible to read directly from the logs values close to the true resistivities of the formations without further corrections. Field examples are shown to illustrate the results of the method in various types of formations. INTRODUCTION As soon as it was introduced into the petroleum industry, electrical logging roved to be a powerful instrument for the delineation of the strata traversed by bore holes and for correlation of such strata." Research and engineering efforts were mostly devoted at this early time to the design of the techniqurs which could provide the best data for these purpoes. Later, attention was directed toward the quantitative analy5i.s of electrical logs, in order to obtain information on. reservoir characteristics, and, in particular, on oil and water saturation.3,4 Efforts have been made, accordingly, with a view to improving the already existing methods, or to finding new methods which could satisfy these new requirements." Quantitative analysis implies a determination as accurate as possible of the true resistivity of the formations. In fact, however; the "apparent resistivity" recorded in front of a given bed by a conventional electrical logging method is frequently quite different from the true resistivity of this bed. This is due to the combined influence of the mud column, of the adjacent formations both above and below the bed, and of the invaded zone, in which the original fluid has been more or less replaced by mud filtrate. When the beds are thick enough, and, as is frequently the case in sand and shale formations, when their resistivity is not much greater than that of the mud, it is generally possible to obtain their true resistivity directly on the electric log, or at least to obtain an approximate value which can be corrected without undue difficulty by means of recently published charts known as "departure curves."" When the beds are thin, and particularly when, in addition. their resistivity is substantially greater than that of the mud column, the apparent resistivities recorded on conventional logs are seriously affected, and it is generally very difficult, if at all possible, to estimate their true resistivity with a good enough accuracy. In the most severe cases, such as are encountered in holes drilled through hard formations with muds of high salinity, the conventional logs are so distorted and rounded that they do not even show clearly the houndaries of the different beds. In order to overcome the effect of the mud column and of the adjacent formations, it is possible to make use of appro. priate systems whereby the measurements involve a comp3ratjvelv thin slice of space at the level of the measuring device. I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to a novel system of dredging, which, it seems to me, may prove applicable, not only to river and harbor improvements, but also to certain varieties at least of alluvial and diluvial gold mining; that is, river-mining, barmining, coast-mining, and any other similar operations now carried on by means of coffer-dams or dredging machines. The simple and effective method to which I refer is the invention of General Roy Stone, formerly an officer of volunteers, and at present a civil engineer, engaged under General Newton, of the United States Engineer Corps, upon the government works in New York harbor. General Stone has been, since September, 1878, in charge of operations upon Diamond Reef. This reef, lying between Governor's Island and the Battery, is one of the most dangerous in the harbor. Its position in the highway of navigation, and the fact that it is dangerous only to vessels of considerable draught and at certain stages of the tide, combine to increase the serious nature of the disasters which it has caused. The reef consists partly of rock in place, and partly of deposits of glacial clay, boulders, and pebbles, over all of which lies, or did lie until it was removed, the ordinary silt and rubbish of the harbor. As the purpose of the present paper has nothing to do with the special dimensions and other circumstances of this particular work, I describe those features only which are connected with General Stone's ingenious device. Various attempts have been made to remove the upper portion of Diamond Reef and secure a navigable depth at low tide. Some years ago Maillefert undertook to accomplish this by firing charges of high explosives, simply laid upon the surface. He accomplished some good in the removal of projecting points and ridges ; but as soon as the surface of the reef had become approximately level, his method was no longer effective. After the work had been taken up by the Engineer Corps, the well-known drilling-scow invented by General Newton was brought into action ; and, so long as holes could be bored and fired in solid rock, this process was effective enough. The flotation process for the concentration of ores is a method by means of which one or more of the minerals in the ore (usually the valuable ones) are picked up by means of a liquid film and floated at the surface of a mass of fluid pulp. Here they are separated from the other minerals, which remain immersed in the body of the pulp. In general, the minerals which are floated are sulphides of metallic luster, but some other minerals of metallic luster such as graphite and some sulphides with adamantine luster, such as sphalerite and cinnabar, are amenable to treatment by the process. The importance of flotation lies in the fact that it is primarily a "slimes process" by means of which the particles of valuable mineral, too fine for efficient gravity concentration, are saved with a high percentage of recovery. Recoveries in the mills treating low-grade copper sulphide ores have been advanced 10 to 20 per cent. by the installation of the process and similar increased savings have been accomplished by the same means in mills treating sulphide ores of zinc and lead. When finely ground ore containing sulphides mixed with a siliceous or earthy gangue is brought gently onto the surface of a body of water, in a direction forming an acute angle with the surface of the water, a considerable portion of the sulphide constituent of the ore floats on the surface of the liquid, while the gangue sinks. This is the so-called film flotation, exemplified by the Wood and Macquisten processes. When gas bubbles are introduced into a fluid pulp composed of finely ground ore and water, to which has been added (1) a small amount of certain oils, or (2) a small amount of certain acida or acid salts, or (3) a small amount of certain alkalis or alkaline salts, or (4) a small amount of a mixture of oil with acid or alkali, the sulphide particles in the ore are brought to the surface on the gas bubbles. IN THE changed circumstances which now confront the world, an international open-door policy is the only way to keep pace with the world's demand for oil. You may rest assured that as far as the British Empire is concerned, American capital for the develop-ment of oil resources is welcome, and little obstruction will be found in the way to permit the use of foreign capital in the group of countries which constitute the British Empire. In the war days we worked in close cooperation and harmony, but in disbandment of the Petroleum War Service Committee, when the war ended, I feel that it left its task unfinished. In the wake of war there appeared a ghost of war-time conditions in the form of belief that Great Britain was straining to corner the petroleum resources of the world. I am certain that if the war-service committee had continued its work in the period of reconstruction the real story would be known and this sinister ghost would have long since vanished before the truth.

G. A. Vissac (Consulting Engineer, Vancouver, B. C.) —Some of the data presented in this paper, in connection with cost studies of washed coals, should be clarified and qualified. Washing a raw coal down to a low ash content may mean higher losses in refuse, but the cost of the operation may be more than compensated by the increased value of the resultant product. However, careful engineering and accurate machinery are required to insure maximum profits. Washing at a low gravity separation demands a very accurate automatic process, chiefly when the small sizes of coal are being handled. Coal consumers today are buying mostly on a Btu basis, cognizant of the fact that low ash contents result in lower installation costs and in savings in handling and transportation charges. The attached Table X gives the actual balance sheets of the various cleaning operations corresponding to various ash contents for the two coals presented in the paper, using the old technique of a two-products separation. or the new technique, now commonly used in Europe, of a three-way separation made possible by new methods and new equipment. Savings in capital costs, handling, and transportation have been calculated on the basis of a delivered cost f.O.b. plant of $10.00 per ton of coal at 16.5 pct ash (actual 1953 average price reported by Consolidated Edison, N. Y.), and of $3.50 at the mine also for 16.5 pct ash coal. In both cases this corresponds to values of 126 and 4.26 per 1 pct of combustible and per ton, respectively, on delivered and on at the mine prices. As an example, the middle western coal at 16.5 pct ash, raw, washed down to 4 pct ash in a two-way process will give 53.75 pct of clean coal at 4 pct ash and 46.25 pct of refuse at 31 pct ash. The value of the losses will be 0.4625x(100—31)x0.042 = $1.34. Add the cost of washing, capital, and operation, which is $0.35. The total cost will then be $1.69. But with a three-ways separation we will have 53.75 pct of first-grade coal at 4 pct ash, 37.25 pct second-

The solubility of sulfur and rate of solution of sulfur in pure Lron were measured in H2S + H2 and H2S + H2 H2O gas mixtures. The solubility and diffusivity of sulfur at 1410°Care 0.13 pet S and 1.0 x 10-5 sq cm per sec, respectively. The solubility iS the same, but the rate of sulfurization is slower in the presence of H2O in the reacting gas. Under these conditions, the over-all rate is controlled jointly by a slow surface reaction and by solid-state diffusion; the mechanism for the surface reaction has not been identified. KNOWLEDGE of the behavior of sulfur in solid iron is desirable for the metallurgy of such products as free machining steel, where a high sulfur level is required, and inclusion-free high-strength steels, where the sulfur specifications are very low. The present investigation was undertaken to check previously reported values for sulfur solubility and diffusivity in 6 iron, and to study the poisoning effect of chemisorbed oxygen on sulfurization kinetics in H2-H2S-H2O gas mixtures. All of the experiments were performed at 1410°C. The thermodynamic behavior of sulfur in 6 iron was the subject of a paper by Rosenqvist and Dunicz.' The sulfur solubility at 1400" and 1500°C was determined by equilibrating pure iron specimens with H2-H2S gas mixtures. The maximum solubility of sulfur in 6 iron was alsc determined by Barloga, Bock, and parlee2 by reacting iron wires with sulfur in sealed capsules. In another investigation, the diffusion coefficient of sulfur in 6 iron at temperatures up to 1450°C was measured by Seibel.3 The method used was to measure sulfur concentration profiles in diffusion couples containing radioactive sulfur EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. A vertical resistance furnace wound with molybdenum wire and containing a recrystallized alumina reaction rube was used for the experiments. The hot zone in the furnace was approximately 2 in. long with a temperature variation of ±3oC. The hot zone temperature was automatically controlled to within ±2°C, and the test temperature was measured with a pt/Pt-10 pet Rh thermocouple before and after each experiment. Flow rates of the reacting gases were obtained using capillary flow meters. Materials. The source of H2S in the gas train was a premixed cylinder containing 5 pet H2S in H2. This mixture then was diluted with additional hydrogen and argon. In some experiments, water vapor was introduced by passing hydrogen and argon through a column containing 10 pet anhydrous oxalic acid and 90 pet oxalic acid dihydrate. The vapor pressure of water above this mixture is well-known.4 Argon was used as a diluent to minimize thermal segregation of H2S in the furnace5 and to reach higher H2O:H2 ratios than could be obtained in mixtures of H2 and H2S alone. Argon was purified by passage over copper chips at 350°C and subsequently over anhydrone. Hydrogen was purified by passage over platinized asbestos at 450°C and then over anhydrone. The H2-H2S mixture was purified by passage over platinized asbestos and then over P2O5. The specimen stock was made by melting and vacuum-carbon deoxidizing electrolytic "Plastiron" in a zirconia crucible. The principal impurities are listed in Table I. In some of the equilibrium experiments, six-pass zone-refined iron was used to minimize impurity side effects. This zone-refined iron had a total impurity level of about 25 ppm. Procedure. Specimens were annealed in hydrogen for a period of at least 2 hr at the beginning of each experiment. The specimens were held in the reacting gas for times varying between 10 min and 17 hr, and cooled to room temperature in a water-cooled stainless-steel block at the bottom of the furnace. The pH2S/pH2 ratios reported are those for gas equilibrium at 1410°C. Calculations based on available thermodynamic data8 showed that the only other gaseous8 species that formed in significant amounts in the furnace were S2 and S. Even when water vapor was introduced into the gas mixture, the concentrations of SO2, SO, and so forth, were negligible. ONE often reads of the rich placer gravels in many of the canoe-traveled rivers of South America. The apparent richness of these gold-bearing gravels impresses the traveler, and in fact he may see batea after batea showing enough colors to figure over a dollar per cubic yard. These workings are called "playas" from the Spanish word playa, meaning shore or beach. Many workings have been reported in tropical rivers, but to my knowledge no dredge has made a success in such deposits. Investigation generally shows that the area of richness is limited and especially that the depth of the rich concentration is hardly ever more than a few inches. The Cauca river in Colombia, South America, is noted for its many rich playas.. This river rises near Popayan in the southern part of Colombia, flows north through a narrow valley between parallel mountain ranges and empties into the Magdalena river near Maganque. The airline distance between source and mouth of this river is only about 500 miles. The rainfall is large and the lower Cauca appears to be about the size of the Missouri river in the United States. From its mouth up to Valdivia, in the State of Antioqua, it is navigable. Above Valdivia is a. narrow gorge, above which the river is again navigable for some distance. The part of the Cauca where the playa panning is most noticeable is from Valdivia down to Where the Nechi river enters the Cauca, a distance along the river of about 100 miles. The current in this part is swift, so that the stern-wheel river steamers make the trip with some difficulty. In the course of my work in this section of Colombia I have had the opportunity to make a study of several of these playa workings and will give in detail the conditions observed.

EVEN the highest purity silicon available for semiconductor use contains significant amounts of donors and acceptors, usually aluminum, phosphorus, and boron. Aluminum and phosphorus can be removed from silicon by adaptations of the zone refining techniques' widely used with germanium. Removal of boron, however, has been a difficult problem. The approximate distribution coefficient for boron in silicon is 0.8, so that while zone refining is possible, it is not very effective in any reasonable number of passes. It has been found, however, that boron can be effectively removed from silicon by treatment of a liquid zone with hydrogen and water vapor. ALTHOUGH enormous tonnages of sulfide lead and lead-silver ores are treated by flotation, the products of flotation mills treating oxidized ores of lead and silver are almost negligible. However, each year there is a slight tonnage increase, and it is possible, should a sizeable oxidized lead ore tonnage be developed, the field will become an important one. In 1918, the Shattuck-Arizona Copper Co. erected a plant at Warren, Ariz., for the treatment of oxidized gold-silver-lead ores. Glenn L. Allen worked out the metallurgy for this plant, employing tabling, followed by flotation concentration. The Shattuck-Denn Mining Co., successors to the Shattuck-Arizona Co., now employs straight flotation in the same mill, treating about 200 tons daily. In 1922, the San Diego mill of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in the Parral district, Chihuahua, Mexico, started operating a 600-ton mill on a mixed sulfide-oxide gold-silver-lead ore. Tables and flotation are used here, and about 200 tons of oxidized slime treated by flotation. In 1923, the Eureka Holly Mining Co. started operating a 90-ton mill at Eureka, Nev., using tables and flotation, on an oxidized lead-silver ore. In 1924, the American Smelting & Refining Co. started a 250-ton mill in northern Peru, to treat a high-grade oxidized gold-silver ore with very low lead values. In 1924, the Grand Central Mining Co. started a 200-ton flotation mill on old oxidized gold-silver-lead tailings at Fairbank, Ariz. In 1926, the Compania Internacional Minera, a subsidiary of the Union Corporation of London, started a 250-ton flotation mill on oxidized lead-silver ores, and during April of this year, the Phelps-Dodge Corpn. will probably start a 250-ton mill at Warren, Ariz., on oxidized lead-silver ores, similar to those being treated in the Shattuck-Denn mill. METHODS All of these mills use sodium sulfide for filming the oxide minerals, with the possible exception of the North Peru mill, and all use oily reagents. The total tonnage of strictly oxidized lead-silver ores concentrated by flotation is probably less than 2500 tons daily. The following figures give the various types of ores being treated:

The thermal conductivity of aluminum alloys is of considerable industrial importance. This is particularly true in such applications as internal-combustion engines where one of the principal reasons for the use of these alloys is their relatively higher thermal conductivity. In spite of this, relatively few data are available on this property of aluminum alloys. The reason is quite apparent to anyone concerned with the experimental determination of coefficients of thermal conductivity. This determination, in theory so simple, is extraordinarily difficult if any high degree of precision is desired. Fortunately, some .knowledge of the relationship between thermal and electrical conductivity has permitted the use of the latter physical property in deducing the relative approximate values of the thermal conductivities of metals. This fundamental relationship, first enunciated by Wiedemann and Franz' as applying to metallic elements and later shown by Lorenz2 to be applicable to alloys within a single metallic system, has been of service in the industrial application of metals. The electrical conductivity of metals is easily determined with a high degree of precision. It is, therefore, quite desirable that the relationship between electrical and thermal characteristics be determined with the greatest possible precision. This paper presents data on the electrical and thermal conductivities of a number of aluminum alloys of industrial importance. Literature on Thermal Conductivity of Aluminum Alloys Masumoto3 determined the electrical and thermal conductivities of 18 aluminum alloys. His results indicated a relatively constant relationship between thermal and electrical conductivity.

The quenching technique has been used to study phase relations in the composition area 2FeO.SiO2-FeO-SiO2-MnO.Si02-ZMnO.SiO2 of the system iron oxide-manganese oxide-silica under strongly reducing conditions such as exist in a gas mixture consisting of equul parts of carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Liquidus and solidus temperatures of most mixtures in the composition area studied are in the range of 1173° to 1345°C. EQUILIBRIUM relations existing among the oxides of iron, manganese, and silicon are of particular interest in two areas of steelmaking: slags and ingot inclusions. Mixtures of these oxides represent about 90 pct of the slag in the acid steelmaking process, and so dominate the chemistry of the whole refining process. These constituents also play an important role in the early slags existing at the time of the "lime boil" in the basic open hearth process. If these slags are liquid, they "wet" the lumps of lime rising from the bottom of the bath, and react with them. A liquid slag rich in CaO is then formed at the very beginning of the refining. Because the temperature is still low, all conditions for a good dephosphoriza-tion are fulfilled at this stage of the operation. Metal deoxidized with ferromanganese or silico-manganese is likely to contain, as inclusions, phases made up from among the oxides of iron, manganese, and silicon. A knowledge of stability relations existing among the phases present in this system, therefore, enables one to predict the hardness of the inclusions encountered. Moreover, because the shape of the inclusions in steel has a profound influence on the physical properties of the metal, it is important to establish whether or not the oxidic material is present as liquid or crystalline phases during heating and rolling of the steel (-1150 to 1350°C). A knowledge of melting relations in synthetic mixtures of iron oxide, manganese oxide, and silica will give a clue to these problems. Methods for determining such relations and the results obtained are described iln this paper. I) PREVIOUS WORK A number cf previous studies have dealt with the three "binary"* systems bounding the system iron oxide-mangar,.ese oxide-silica. The system iron oxide-silica was studied by Bowen and shairerl in 1932. Their data were obtained by equilibration of mixtures in contact with metallic iron. Phase relations for the system iron oxide-silica ill atmospheres of different oxygen pressures car1 be derived from data on the system FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 as determined by Muan.2 The diagram shown iri Fig. l is a section of this system in an atmosphere of CO2 and H2 in ratio 1:l. The system manganese oxide-silica has also been the subject of several investigations. Most of the early studies suffered from a lack of proper control of the atmosphere under which the equilibrations were carried mt. Phase diagrams for the system at two well defined levels of oxygen pressures have been determined recently. Glasser3 determined stability relations in an atmosphere consisting of carbon dioxide and hydrogen in ratio 5:1, diagram Fig. 2, and Muan4 studied phase relations in the system in air.

The problem of sulfur control is important in all blast-furnace operations but particularly for certain grades of steel because of the rigorous specifications. During the past decade the tendency has been to produce pig iron and hot metal of lower sulfur content. As most of the sulfur in the iron originates in the fuel, the use of high-sulfur coke demands modifications in practice to meet sulfur specifications. While it is generally known that high temperatures and more basic slags favor desulfurization, operators as a rule produce the most acid slag that will permit proper desulfurization. The viscosity of blastfurnace slag has been thought to be related to desulfurization and has been investigated by Feild and Roysterl, also McCaffery and his associates*, but apparently no systematic effort has been made to determine the relative desulfurizing powers of slags over the range of composition encountered in practice. Development of Testing Method Because slag and metallic iron are immiscible, the desulfurization reaction is heterogeneous, occurring only at the interfaces between slag and metal bodies. In the blast furnace the newly reduced iron, containing FeS, descends through the slag bath probably either as small drops or streams, at the interfaces of which desulfurization occurs. After its descent through the slag the iron collects to form a bath of metal, at the top surface of which desulfurization reaction probably occurs. These two steps have been thought to account for all desulfurization in the blast furnace. Kinney3 found that metal removed from the blast furnace just above the tuyeres contained three to four times as much sulfur as the iron at cast. Herty and Gaines4 conclude that most of the sulfur is removed while the metal is passing through the slag. Mund, Stoecker

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more. promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

Extraction of silica from the taconites of the Wisconsin Gogebic range by high temperature digestion in caustic solutions has been described.1,2 The ores consist essentially of hematite, goethite, and microcrystalline quartz, detailed descriptions of which appear in the literature.1,3 It is the purpose of this communication to describe some results obtained from a laboratory investigation of an alternative method, that of sintering the ore with sodium carbonate followed by water extraction of the sodium silicate produced. This is analogous to the Deville-Péchiney4,5 soda ash sinter process for the production of alumina from bauxites in which soluble sodium aluminates are formed. Raw mixes of the desired composition were prepared from 10.0 g minus 200 mesh samples of taconite and sintered in nickel crucibles in a muffle furnace controlled to within ±10°F of the operating temperatures. The resulting sinters were pulverized and then leached in distilled water with continuous agitation for 30 minutes at 95°C. The suspensions were vacuum filtered and the residues dried, ignited and weighed. Iron assays on the ignited samples were made by the standard dichromate procedure after dissolution in hydrochloric acid. The percentage of extraction was calculated from the iron assays by the relation:

A mutispectral scanner (MSS) obtains remotely sensed data of the earth's surface in vector form, one vector element for each spectral sensing band of the MSS. Data generated by either airborne or orbiting MSS systems are organized in a lattice of scan lines and elements within scan lines. Each element, called a pixel, is represented by an observational vector and corresponds to a relatively small specific area on the ground. The total observations for a sensed scene frequently are in the millions and are composed of a number of populations, each representing a different land form category. Based on samples from the populations, the mean vectors, or spectral signatures, and the covariance matrices for the categories may be estimated. From these, an among category covariance matrix and a combined within category covariance matrix can be found. The total among category variance is the trace of the among category covariance matrix. Canonical analysis finds a linear transformation matrix such that the first transform variable accounts for the maximum possible part of the total among category variance. Similarly, the second transform variable, orthogonal to the first, accounts for the maximum possible part of the remainder of the total variance, and so on. Such transformation often results in over 95 percent of the total variance accounted for in the first three canonical variables, even though the initial number of spectral bands exceeded twenty. Transformation of bulk data into three canonical variates allows color map products to be developed by assigning each variable to a different basic color. Such color products are believed to be more useful for photo-interpretation than color products resulting from any combinations of three of the initial spectral bands.
