The solubility of nitrogen gas in purified iron and low alloy steels is determined for the y region (930° to 1350°C). The diffusivtiy of nitrogen is estimated from the rate of approach to equilibrium. The investigation of aluminum-killed steels, held in nitrogen, discloses precipitation of aluminum nitride, the solubility of which is determined. ALTHOUGH several investigations of the solu-bility of nitrogen gas in y iron have been reported, all have made use of the method adopted by Sieverts in his classic work, whereby the solubility is determined by the pressure or volume change of the gas. The agreement between different investigators* is rather poor, particularly as compared to the self-consistency of results of several individual investigators. The present report represents a portion of our investigation of the equilibrium of nitrogen and nitrogenous atmospheres with iron and steels. The method adopted in this temperature region (910" to 1400°C) consists of holding the specimen in gaseous nitrogen, quenching (or cooling), and determining the nitrogen content by direct analysis (solution in acid followed by distillation and titra-tion of the ammonia).** Up to 1050°C a 20 in. vertical wire-wound (Kan-thal) furnace was used; this was wound in three sections so that by proper adjustment of relative currents, and use of a modulator1 and a commercial controller (using a chromel-alumel control couple), a zone almost 6 in. long could be maintained uniform within a few tenths of a degree. Since the temperature coefficient of the nitrogen solubility is low, the full precision was not utilized and a variation of l° to 2" was tolerated; a variation of a similar amount also occurred occasionally between the beginning and end of the experiment. At higher temperature a vertically mounted, tubular Globar furnace and control unit was used; the zone of uniformity (l° to 2"C) was here limited to about 2 in.; fluctuations with time were comparable to those in the wire-wound furnace. Reported temperatures were measured by use of a platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouple, which was frequently com- pared with a similar standard couple which was calibrated at the gold and palladium points and also compared with one certified by the Bureau of Standards; error from this source is believed to be less than 1 "C. Nitrogen gas from a commercial cylinder was mixed with slightly over 1 pct H by use of a gas mixer described previously.' This mixture was passed over hot copper and through ascarite and phosphorus pentoxide to remove oxygen and water vapor. The purified gas contained 1.05 pct H. THE methods employed for the determination of oxides and oxygen in ferrous materials may be roughly classed in two groups, "wet" methods and "hot" methods, the first group including the iodine, electrolytic, mercuric chloride, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and chlorine methods; the second group including the vacuum-fusion and hydrogen-reduction methods. The wet methods depend upon preferential solubility in a selected medium to separate the metallic portion of the sample from the oxygen-containing constituents. Subsequent analysis of the insoluble residue permits the isolation and separate determination of individual oxides and compounds. The hot methods depend upon the reduction of the oxide constituents of the sample by means of carbon or hydrogen at elevated temperatures. With the exception of the recently developed fractional vacuum-fusion method, the hot methods do not identify individual oxides and compounds but yield only a single value represent-ing the sum of the oxygen contents of several or all of the oxide con-stituents present. With such diversity in the principles and. aims of the different groups, it is not surprising that concordance of results by differ-ent methods has usually been difficult to obtain. The present cooperative attempt to define more rigorously than has been possible heretofore the accuracy and limits of usefulness of the vari-ous methods, originated in correspondence between Dr. John Johnston, Director of Research of the United States Steel Corporation, and other interested metallurgists. The plan was, briefly, to submit identical samples to a number of laboratories for analysis by different methods and to collate the results of these analyses. The project was endorsed by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metal-lurgical Engineers at the annual meeting in February, 1933, and has been conducted under the joint sponsorship of the Iron and Steel Division and the National Bureau of Standards. DURING the course of an investigation of the effects of various starch products on hematite and quartz in regard to their separation by flotation, it was found that whereas most starches flocculated suspensions of hematite in water, they did not flocculate similar suspensions of quartz. However, a derivative of whole corn starch containing approximately one tenth aminoethyl group (-—CH,CH2NH2) per glucose unit proved to be an exception. This aminoethyl starch was a very good flocculant for both hematite and quartz, and also possessed the property of depressing both minerals in cationic flotation tests. In view of the widespread use of starch as a flocculating agent of solids in tailing water, pulps, and for coal slimes, ore and various other purposes in sulphide and nonsulphide flotation, attention is called to the effective surface activity of aminoethyl starch in flocculating suspensions of the two minerals investigated. Test Materials The starch products employed included Globe Pearl starch No. 144 and fresh aminoethyl starch, both supplied by the Corn Products Refining Co. Dr. A. L. Elder" has kindly furnished a description The minerals used in the various tests are listed in Table I. Their specific surfaces were determined by the air permeability method, which gave results reproducible to within plus or minus 3 pct. Surface areas obtained by krypton adsorption were greater than the air permeability values by a factor of 2.0 for quartz and 62.4 for hematite. Starch Adsorption on Mineral Surfaces Starch adsorption data were obtained by agitating for 1 hr measured volumes of neutral starch solutions of known concentrations with weighed quantities of finely divided mineral of measured specific surface. The mineral then was separated from the pulp liquor by centrifugation and the residual starch content determined by chemical analysis. The analytical procedure consisted of oxidizing the starch with an excess of dichromate in acid medium at elevated temperature and titrating the excess dichromate by the ferrous ammonium sulphate—potassium permanganate method. Analytical results were reproducible to within less than 1 pct. Adsorption data obtained in unbuffered solutions near the neutral point are plotted in Fig. 1. The adsorption on either mineral was far greater for the aminoethyl starch than for the Pearl starch. Flocculation The degree of flocculation was determined for a given pulp by measuring the time required for the supernatant liquid to reach a certain degree of clarity. This was accomplished by passing a standard light beam through the pulp, contained in a glass settling tube, and measuring the time required after agitation ceased for the intensity of the transmitted beam to reach a predetermined value. Starch reagent was added to each pulp in small uniform increments, and the settling time was determined after each such addition. Increase in pulp liquor volume due to the added starch reagent was ignored in these tests. Pulps were maintained at or near neutrality. of the preparation of the aminoethyl starch: "Three hundred and sixty grams of powdered unmodified corn starch was slurried in 3 liters of water and stirred during gelatinization. Eighty-six grams of ethylenimine was added slowly during reflux which was continued for 4 hr. The yellow solution set to a gel upon cooling. This was broken up and neutralized with HC1. The thick paste was dried on hot rolls. Adsorbed polyethylenimine and salts were removed from the yellowish products by washing first with acidified aqueous '60 per cent' alcohol. The white product contained nitrogen corresponding to about one aminoethoxy group per ten glucose residues." Only laboratory samples of this starch derivative have been prepared. The starch reagents for use in flocculation, flotation, and adsorption tests were made up by dispersing the appropriate quantities of air-dry starch in cold water, adding boiling water, and heating for 30 min at 120°C under pressure. When used ip adsorption tests, the starch solutions first were cleared of insoluble matter by centrifugation.

Analytical expressions derived previously are used to describe quantitatively effects on macrosegregation of some solidification and mold design variables. Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy is used as example. It is shown that abrupt changes in heat transfer rate result in solute-rich or solute-poor "bands". Severe solute-rich bands accowzpany "reheating" that can result, for example, from abrupt formation of an air gap at a mold-metal interface. With planar isotherms, solute-poor regions also result from reduction in cross section through which fluid flow to feed shrinkage takes place. It is suggested that the negative "cone" of segregation often found at the base of large ingots results from this reduction in cross section for feeding. Consideration is given to the positive and negative segregation to be expected in laboratory ingots in association with changes in ingot cross section. Under-riser positive segregation is considered and it is concluded this segregation results when vertical temperature gradient is low in the region of the riser; the segregation is accentuated by the temperature gradient reversal which can occur in inadequately insulated risers ("'hot tops"). Finally it is shown for Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy that the assumption of constant k and p in analytic solutions gives calculated results close to those obtained for the case of ziariable k and 0. A basic "local solute redistribution equation" was derived earlier' for calculation of macrosegregation resulting from flow of solute-rich liquid to feed solidification shrinkage, thermal contraction, and/or other contractions occurring during solidification. This expression relates fraction liquid, g~, to liquid composition, CL, at a given position x, y, z, in a solidifying Eq. [I] is for the general case of three-dimensional heat and fluid flow assuming constant solid (but not necessarily liquid) density during solidification, negligible net solute change from diffusion, and no pore formation. In this paper we first demonstrate application of this equation for calculation of macrosegregation in several examples involving one-dimensional heat and fluid flow. Specifically considered are examples in which segregation results from sudden changes in heat flow conditions. Next, Eq. [I] is used to describe segregation in examples where isotherms remain planar but where fluid flow is no longer one-dimensional. Application of this expression illustrates the type of segregation to be expected in unidirectionally solidified ingots of gradually or abruptly varying cross section. For segregation calculations, A1-4.5 pct Cu alloy is employed with constant k and p Vz = 0.172, 4 = 0.055), eutectic composition (CE = 33 pct Cu). In all examples, fraction eutectic is neglected in velocity calculations; this was previously shown to introduce little error.' A linear distribution of fraction liquid in the liquid-solid zone is assumed. In a concluding section it is shown that the assumption employed of constant k and /3 gives results close to those obtained when the actual (variable) values of k and 0 are employed.

THE accepted basis of comparisons between mills of different diameter is the percentage critical speed. If n = actual mill speed, rpm, nc = calculated critical speed, rpm, np = calculated percentage critical speed, and D == inside diameter of the mill in feet, then n, In the following analysis capacity, T, is expressed in short tons per hour, tph, and power consumption, P, in kilowatts, kw. Accordingly power consumption per unit of capacity, P will be expressed in kilowatt hours per short ton, or kw-hr per ton. In all equations D refers to the inside diameter of the mill in feet and v to the peripheral speed of the mill in feet per minute inside the liners. ' Comparison between separate mills must be based on equivalent grinding conditions, i.e., same feed, same size distribution of feed, same size distribution of product, and same percentage of solids. In addition, comparisons between separate rod mills must be based on the same rods, same type of liners, and same percentage rod load. Comparisons between separate ball mills presuppose the same balls, similar liners, and same relative ball load. The practical np-range through which the equations apply varies, being narrower for fine grinding in ball mills and wider for coarse crushing in rod mills. The Relationship between Capacity and Speed It is the general belief that the capacity, T, of a tumbling mill is directly proportional to the speed of the mill, other things remaining constant.' Mathematically this is represented by the equation T - c¹ n tph [4] where c, is a factor related with the grinding characteristics of the ore, method of reduction, and the units chosen. It is proposed here that the general equation relating mill capacity and speed should be of the form T = c¹ nm tph [5] In other words, the capacity should be proportional to the mill speed raised to power m, the numerical value of the exponent being 1 5 m 5 1.5, depending on the circumstances. Eq. 5 can also be written in the following forms: T = c, (np)m tph, and [6] T=Ca vm tph, [71 where v = peripheral speed of the mill in feet per minute. If the observed capacity of a mill at speed n¹ is = T¹ tph, the capacity T² of the same mill at speed n² should be T² = T¹ (n²/n¹)tph [8] The Relationship between Power Consumption, Mill Diameter, and Speed The only well known theoretical deduction relating power consumption, P, and mill diameter appears to be the formula of duPont introduced by Gow, Guggenheim, Campbell, and Coghill.' According to duPont, the power required to operate a mill is a function of the mass of the balls, of the lever arm of the ball mass, and of the speed of the mill. The ball mass per unit of mill length is proportional to the square of the diameter, the lever arm is directly proportional to the diameter, and the critical mill speed or any percentage thereof is inversely proportional to the square root of the mill diameter. E. A. HOLBROOK,*Urbana, Ill.-To those who have followed the development of powdered coal two questions often occur. First, as to the moisture in the coal. In Illinois we recognize that the bituminous coals contain about 12 to 15 per cent. of what we call "contained moisture," that is, the moisture is present in the coal although this may appear absolutely dry and dusty. In addition, the surface moisture may be present in any amount. I would like to ask what is the relative effect of these two forms of moisture upon the work of pulverizing. Does Mr. Collins refer to the contained moisture or to the surface moisture in estimating the degree to which the coal must be dried? H. R. COLLINS.-In the lignite coals, of which this country possesses a great deal and is beginning to develop them to considerable extent, the "contained" or "combined" moisture does not .trouble us; we have no difficulty in reducing lignites to a high degree of fineness. But when dealing with bituminous, sub-bituminous, or semi-bituminous, we, prefer to reduce the combined moisture as well as the hydroscopic moisture as far as possible. We have recently put into operation, at a plant, furnaces and boilers consuming the lignite from northern New Mexico, which contains between 4 and 5 per cent. moisture as we pulverize and burn it. The evaporating efficiencies under the boilers have been so remarkable that we wish to check the results half a dozen times before quoting them. We have also just started two boilers at the Garfield smelter, and have obtained the same high efficiencies.

THE kaolins of the southeastern United States were known to civilization as early as the latter part of the eighteenth century-and yet the [ ] commercial history of Georgia kaolins may be said to begin in the year 1900. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reported for that year a production of 6885 tons of "miscellaneous" clays in Georgia. A comparison of these figures with those of 1934, when the production rose to 284,556 tons (65 per cent of the domestic production), indicates the growing economic and technologic importance of this raw material. Fig. 1 clearly shows that a part of the increase is due to a normal growth in the use of kaolinitic clays and a part is due to replacement of clays formerly imported. The solid solubility of iron in 2 to 10 pct cupro-nickels increases with temperature and nickel content. Property changes accompanying various heat treatments indicate typical precipitation hardening behavior. Iron content also affects softening temperature and sub-scale formation. These factors, as well as impingement corrosion resistance, influence the optimum iron content of commercial alloys. FOR many years Cu-Ni alloys have been used extensively in the form of tubes, pipes, and plates for the construction of salt-water lines and surface condensers on shipboard and in tidewater power stations. The 30 pct Ni alloy has been considered more resistant to rapidly flowing sea water than alloys of lower nickel content, and has been standard on ships of the U. S. Navy. Some ten years ago, the still better corrosion resistance obtained by modifying the 30 pct Ni alloy with approximately 0.5 pct Fe was recognized, and the iron-bearing alloy rapidly superseded the plain alloy as the standard material for severe service. In 1945, Tracy and Hungerford1 published a study of the effect of iron on the corrosion of various cupro-nickels in sea-salt solutions, and their data indicated that the 10 pct Ni alloy containing about 0.75 pct Fe was equivalent to the 30 pct Ni alloy containing 0.5 pct Fe. This was confirmed by LaQue in discussion of the above paper, and by results in an experimental condenser set up at the Kure Beach marine test station of The International Nickel Co., reported by Freeman and Tracy.' The 10 pct Ni iron-bearing alloy is now being very widely used in applications where the 30 pct Ni iron-bearing alloy was formerly considered standard. While this "substitution" has undoubtedly been stimulated by the present extreme shortage of nickel, it must be emphasized that it involves no loss of service performance, and would have occurred anyway in the course of time, for economic reasons. In view of the increasing use of the 10 pct alloy, it seems desirable to make generally available the results of several investigations of Cu-Ni-Fe alloys carried out in the Metallurgical Research Laboratory of The American Brass Co. in recent years. The present paper, deals with the constitution of these alloys in the copper-rich corner of the system, and with the variations in hardness and tensile properties resulting from the heat treatment of alloys containing various amounts of iron. Most of this work is concerned with alloys containing 10 pct Ni. With over about 0.75 pct fe, the 10 pct Ni alloy is suscep- Alloys Several series of cupro-nickel alloys containing iron were used in these investigations. Most of them were prepared in the laboratory, but two samples of commercially fabricated alloys were included. Series A—Nominally 2 and 5 pct Ni, each with 0 to 1.5 pct Fe. Series B—Nominally 10 pct Ni with 0.1 to 0.4 pct Fe. Series C—Nominally 1.0 pct Ni with 0 to 2 pct Fe. Series D—Nominally 10 pct Ni with 3 to 5 pct Fe. Series E—Nominally 10 pct Ni with 1 and 1.5 pct Fe.

As air-pollution regulations become increasingly more stringent, increased significance is being placed on the amount of sulfur present in coals used for steam generation. These regulations are aimed at minimizing the pollution of the atmosphere with noxious gases such as the sulfur oxides that are formed and emitted when coal is burned. Two meet these future requirements, a definite need exists to reduce the sulfur content of some of the coals used for steam generation. Reducing pyritic sulfur involves liberating the pyrite from the coal and then removing it. The specific gravity of pyrite is high (5.0) compared to that of coal (about 1.2, mineral-free), and standard coal-washing devices, such as wet concentrating tables, will efficiently remove pyrite particles larger than about 100 mesh. Particles below this size will be entrained in the table water and will be carried into the clean coal product. Techniques such as froth flotation are of little benefit for pyrite reduction because the flotation characteristics of pyrite are similar to those of coal.

It is now recognized that several important types of reactions in metallic systems proceed by the formation of nuclei and the growth of these nuclei. The process of freezing is a simple example of this, as Tammann pointed out years ago.1 Tammann held that the rate of freezing is determined by a rate of nucleation, expressed as the number of nuclei formed per unit volume of unfrozen liquid per second, and a rate of growth of these nuclei, expressed as the linear rate of radial growth in units of length per second. For isothermal freezing the conception is simple; for ordinary freezing, extending over a range of temperature, it is not as simple, for the values of the two constants must change with change in temperature. There is ample evidence that the postulated mechanism is correct even though a quantitative derivation of the rate of isothermal or of ordinary freezing in terms of the two constants has been lacking. In recent years other reactions have been found to proceed in a similar fashion. It has been well established, particularly by Bain12-8 that the formation of pearlite from the eutectoid decomposition of the solid solution austenite proceeds in such a way, and Polanyi and Schmid, Tammann and Crone, Karnop and Sachs, and others9-11 have shown that the process of recrystallization proceeds in a similar way. Isothermal reaction rates have been determined for eutectoid decomposition by a number of investigators. Bain's2-8 work on the formation of pearlite from austenite is especially valuable in this respect—the type of isothermal reaction curve obtained, as illustrated in Fig. 13, showed an initial slow rate, accelerating to an intermediate maximum rate which then decelerated to the completion of the reaction; similar curves have been obtained by Wever and his collaborators.12 Other eutectoid decompositions show similar behavior: for example, the decomposition of the beta eutectoid in the copper-aluminum system, studied by Smith

Discussion of the paper of LAWRENCE ADDICKS, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1471 to 1484. L. D. RICKETTS, New York, N. Y.--In the Southwest we have stored up millions of tons of tailings in which the copper exists partly as sulphide and partly in an oxidized condition. Mr. Addicks' first paper suggests a, likely process for the treatment of such material. His second paper 1 deals with the recovery of copper from clear solutions of notable strength, and such solutions may come from the sulphating roast or direct from the leaching of completely oxidized copper ores of which vast deposits are known to exist. What strikes me particularly about the latter paper is the keen perception shown and the clear manner in which the writer has attacked the fundamental principles of the process. He calls your attention to the fact that ferrous sulphate is necessary in the electrolyte and is an ideal depolarizer; that sulphurous acid must be, used to reduce the ferric sulphate produced and thus prevent re-solution of copper at the cathode; that mechanical agitation in the cell, in order to bring the ferrous sulphate in contact with the anode and the copper in contact with the cathode, is essential to efficient work; that lead anodes are

Pima Mining Co., managed and 50% owned by Cyprus Mines Corp., with Union Oil of California and Utah Construction and Mining Co. sharing equally in the remaining 50%, is a medium-sized open pit copper mine situated in the very active Twin Buttes mining district, 22 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz. In 1965, a three-part paper described Pima's growth from 3,000 tpd (tons per day) in 1957 to 18,000 tpd nine years later. Within months of the completion of the last stage of this sixfold expansion, studies were being wound up on a further major expansion, this time to 30,000 tpd. This expansion is now a reality. Details of the enlargement of the crushing and concentrating plant have already been covered in a recent paper, and the present paper will cover pit engineering studies, equipment selection, and current operating practices. Key factors in top management's decision to go ahead with the latest expansion were: (1) a substantial increase in ore reserves coupled with an appreciable decrease in grade, (2) a generally favorable outlook for copper prices, and (3) better than expected performance by mine and mill equipment purchased for the expansion to 18,000 tpd. For the pit design studies, particular attention was paid to pit stability, a problem area at times in the past, and to the location and grades of the final ramp systems. In drawing up the long-term mining schedule, the attitude of the ore, with the higher grade material lying deeper, was a critical factor and considerable stockpiling of lower-grade material in the early years had to be accepted in order to keep the annual grades close to the average of the orebody. The expansion called for major purchases of mine equipment in order to gear up the mine for delivery of 30,000 tpd to the concentrator. ROOF SUPPORT DEVELOPMENTS IN LONGWALL (1) European longwall mining technology developed towards its modern form in relatively deep mines. With increasing depth the stability of openings driven for ventilation, travel or transport becomes paramount in mine design considerations. As a result the number of roadways and entries, as well as their width must be a minimum. (1) Another important aspect of European mining is the high density of mineable seams, as opposed to the wide lateral extension of a single seam in the U. S. A. Multi-seam mining requires strict planning and near 100% extraction, since with increasing depth, the effect of remnant pillars can be devastating. As a result the face layout of a modern European longwall panel is based on single panel entries of moderate width and great height. The mode of extraction is generally a mixture of the advance and retreat system which is called a 2-system. It is obvious, therefore, that the supports developed for the entries and for the intersection areas are more complex than those in the U. S. A.

The crystallographic orientation relationships resulting when lead is nucleated from the liquid by Ni, Cu, Ag, and Ge were determined. For each nucleating agent several definite orientatioz relationships were found. These relationships seemed to be controlled by good symmetry relations and low crystallographic disregistry between mating planes. For any given nucleating agent the under colling for nucleation was found fairly constant and independent of the orientation relationship and consequent disregistry. It was also found that, upon re melting and refreezing the Pb, the orientation relationship was changed. These findings prove that crystallographic disregistry is not the controlling factor in heterogeneous nucleation from the liquid. The results of this investigation tend to confirm the theory presented in a preceding paper that heterogeneous nucleation starts with the formation of an adsorbed layer of nucleated metal on the nucleat-ing impurity. Evidence is given that cavities in the nucleating agent act as centers of nucleation. IT has long been known' that solid extraneous particles are active in catalyzing phase transformations that occur in a system, particularly condensation and crystallization. It is well established that these heterogeneities act as catalysts by providing surfaces upon which nuclei of the precipitating phase can form with activation energies smaller than those required for homogeneous nucleation. Numerous investigations have shown that in this process of heterogeneous nucleation: a) the nucleus forms with one, or several, definite crystallographic orientation relationships with the nucleating phase2-4 and b) that there is a small range of undercoolings or super saturations characteristic of the nucleation of a given solid on a given Substrate.5-10 Turnbull and vonnegut11 have developed a theory based on theories developed by Volmer12 and Turn-bull and Fisher1= for heterogeneous nucleation from gases and liquids, that relates the super saturation or undercooling required for nucleation to the dis-registry between the lattices of the nucleus and the nucleating agent. This theory predicts that nucleation should occur with the orientation relationship between the nucleus and nucleating agent that minimizes the disregistry. Further, it predicts that the undercooling or super saturation necessary for nucleation should be a function of the disregistry. Numerous investigations have dealt with the orientation relationships resulting from the condensation of vapors onto crystalline solid substrates2,3 and a few with the nucleation of one phase by a second phase in solidification4,14. Others have dealt with the supersaturation8-10 and undercooling5-7 associated with nucleation in condensation and solidification respectively. However, there is virtually no report that gives both of these factors for the same system. In this investigation a study was made of the undercoolings and orientation relationships resulting when Pb is nucleated from the liquid by Ni, Cu, Ag, and Ge. It was the purpose of this investigation to check the Turnbull-Vonnegut theory, i.e., the importance of crystallographic disregistry between nucleating catalyst and nucleated metal. The results indicate that disregistry is not an important factor in nucleation and that the nucleation process is probably somewhat more complex than current theories suggest. EXPERMENTAL PROCEDURE Small single crystals of nickel, copper, silver, and germanium were prepared from materials of four to five nines purity, and the Pb used was also 99.999+ pet pure. Cu and Ag single crystals were prepared by sealing small chips of Cu or Ag in an evacuated quartz capsule and heating the capsule at 2000°F for 1 hr before cooling. Nickel crystals of 200 diam were also prepared in evacuated quartz capsules, but melting was done by heating the capsules in an oxy-acetylene flame for a few minutes. I am deeply sensible of the honor you have conferred on me in electing me your president for this year. It is difficult to understand why I have merited such distinction at your hands, except that I may possibly have helped, in some small way, in the develop ment of metallurgical practice in the West. I fear, however, that I shall fall far shirt of the expectations you may have in regard to my fitness for such a position. The responsibility of preparing an address for this occasion has caused me considerable thought and anxiety. Unlike my predecessors in office, many of whom have dealt in their presidential addresses with subjects covering a wide field, which they could survey with the confidence born of their own extensive knowledge, I have been confined by my experience, during the last twenty-five years, almost wholly to that portion of metallurgical science which bears especially on the treatment of gold and silver. Yet perhaps some sort of general review of the progress of this branch of metallurgy in the West, besides being the contribution I feel myself best qualified to offer, may prove acceptable to many of the members of the Institute. Some few of the gentlemen present will remember the crude condition of metallurgical practice as it was conducted in Colorado only twenty-five years ago. My own personal experience covers a period of eighteen years; and during this comparatively short time I have seen the most astonishing changes in the conduct of metallurgical works. In all probability the marked progress which this country has exhibited could hardly be reached anywhere else, and this result has been achieved mainly by the activity and enterprise so characteristic of the men of the West. The first little successful attempt at smelting made at Black Hawk, in 1867, by Ex-Senator N. P. Hill, representing the Boston and Colorado Smelting Company, proved a great boon to the miners,
