Aluminum alloy 3S was examined to determine the relationship between the applicable phase diagram and the microstructures produced under conditions tending toward non-equilibrium as well as equilibrium. The only phases present in the alloy were aluminum, (Mn,Fe)A16, aAI(Mn,Fe)Si, and silicon. It was found that the alloy behaved essentially as though it belonged to the Al-Mn-Si system. The effects of various solidification rates and of various homogenization treatments were studied. Particular attention was given to a nonuniform precipitate distribution which reflected the solute distribution in the cast aluminum solid solution. Some possible explanations for the solute distribution based on characteristics of the Al-Mn-Si or AI-Mn systems were discussed. ALUMINUM alloy 3s (aluminum plus 1.25 pct Mn) is one of the oldest and the most widely used of the wrought aluminum alloys. In spite of this fact, there are some aspects of the metallography of 3s which have not been revealed or which have not been brought to the attention of the metallurgist working with the alloy. The purpose of this investigation was to demonstrate in general how some of the fundamentals of equilibrium phase diagrams may be applied to the study of an alloy and to show specifically the origin of certain metal-lographic features of aluminum alloy 3s. It is hoped that this information can serve as a basis for solving specific problems relating microstructure to such things as mechanical properties, recrystallization, grain growth, and surface finish. Literature Survey Considering that alloy 3s contains only one alloying addition, manganese, it seems reasonable that it would have characteristics pertaining to the A1-Mn system. However, those characteristics might well be altered by the impurities in the commercial alloy, especially iron and silicon. Therefore, not only the simple binary but also more complex systems had to be reviewed. One characteristic of the A1-Mn system worthy of mention is its sluggishness, which leads to conflicting solubility data1,'2 and makes it relatively easy to supersaturate the solid solution and shift the eutectic composition during rapid solidification.3'4 Another characteristic is the strong influence which small amounts of impurities, especially iron, exert in lowering the solid solubility of manganese. Undissolved manganese is ordinarily present in an intermetallic phase, MnAl,, having an orthorhombic crystal structure. A metastable precipitating phase designated as "G" has been reported but small amounts of iron and silicon suppress this phase entirely." Raynor has established that MnA1, can dissolve a considerable amount of iron by a substitution of iron for manganese atoms up to 50 atomic pct.'" Consequently, in the Al-Mn-Fe liquidus diagram, the eutectic valley separating the primary aluminum and (Mn,Fe)Al, fields is fairly close to a constant Mn + Fe content." This is an important consideration in regulating the composition of 3s and also other aluminum alloys with high manganese additions."

There was an extensive mining and industrial exploitation of Russia, about 20 years ago, by Belgian, French and British capitalists; but the results were discouraging. It is said that the Belgian and French public together lost approximately $400,000,000, chiefly in the coal and iron industry of southern Russia. This loss is largely accounted for by the fact that most of the companies were formed, as usual in " boom" times, to sell stock; and that thorough investigations were not made. I11 1906, renewed interest was taken in Russian mines, especially in those of gold and copper, and a considerable literature is growing on this subject; but as yet I have seen no account of one of the large Russian mining estates. The following notes on such property, where the conditions are so different from those in the mining regions of the United States, should be of interest: This inadequate and probably somewhat inaccurate account is made up, partly from my own notes made on the ground, in the summers of 1904 and 1905, and partly from a volume on the geology and resources of the estate issued several years ago, containing surface- and mine-maps, and from a pamphlet published in 1904, giving a general account of the condition and prospects of the property. This pamphlet includes a report made in 1899 by Arthur L. Pearse, a member of this Institute. Both these books are in Russian, and were prepared by the Bogoslovsk Mining Co., which owns and operates the property. Articles in many other languages have appeared dealing with various matters connected with the estate; but I know of no other general account of it. In numerous books and articles on the Urals and Siberia, however, localities are described in which somewhat similar conditions prevail. Recent papers by

SOME 40 miles east of Tampa is the center of the Florida pebble phosphate deposits. These are of Pliocene age and consist of several members of the Bone Valley formation.' Physically the phosphate-bearing formation, locally called the “matrix," varies in thickness from nothing to about 25 ft., usually averages 10 ft., and consists mainly of clay, quartz and phosphate pebble, the latter particles varying in size from colloidal to one inch diameter. The pebbles range in color from dark gray, through white, to cream, and in hardness from that which must be broken with a hammer to that which can be scratched with the fingernail. They assay from 66 to 80 per cent bone phosphate of lime (called "B.P.L." in the trade) or tricalcium phosphate (Ca3P2O8) and are secondary apatites. They form from 15 to 50 per cent by weight of the matrix. Over the matrix lies a varying thickness (5 to 40 ft.) of overburden composed of quartz and clay. Briefly, mining consists of two operations2 in open pits about 200 ft. wide by ½ mile or more in length. In the first step overburden is removed by large electric draglines at the rate of about 700 cu. yd. per hour. This is followed closely by hydraulic mining of the matrix at the rate of about 300 cu. yd. per hour. This matrix yardage is moved from an improvised sump in the floor of the pit to an ore-dressing plant, some- times a mile distant, by one, two or three "pit-cars" (pumping units) working on a 12-in. pipe line called the "rock line" to distinguish it from the high-pressure water line feeding the hydraulic giants, which is known as the “hydraulic line." This 700 yd. of overburden and 300 yd. of matrix-1000 yd. in all- amounts to about 1500 tons of material moved each hour. The over- burden is dumped into the mined-out pit alongside the pit being mined. The matrix moves to the ore-dressing plant at the rate of about 7 ½ long tons in 4000 gal. of water per minute-a ratio of approximately one to two by weight, or one to six by volume. This constitutes the "mill heads," but in the pebble district it is called the "matrix."

INTRODUCTION The Luanshya Mine is situated in the southern part of the Zambian Copperbelt. The copper ore deposit is stratiform, and is preserved in a synclinorium known as the Roan/ Muliashi basin. Roan shaft (formally called No.14 shaft) is located at the eastern end of the syncline and is theoldest of the presently operating hoisting shafts, being sunk during the 1930's. It presently hoists some 45 per- cent of the total Luanshya Mine production. A cross-section through the shaft is shown in figure 1. The ore formation on the south limb is unmined on this section because until recently it was believed that such mining might cause damage to the shaft. This paper examines the influences of adjacent mining on this so-called 'shaft pillar', and describes the mechanics of subsidence of the pillar itself. GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE Figure 1 shows the general form of folding in the vicinity of Roan shaft. The north and south limbs of the main syncline approach parallelism, with the bottom of the trough fairly smoothly rounded. The axis of the - trough plunges to the west-north-west at 6° - l0°. A brief summary of the major lithologies present in the Roan basin is given in table 1, however, the performance of the overall structure during progressive mining of the ore horizon is controlled by the following features in addition to the mining method. Intraformational Contacts These are characteristically weak in most geological environments. The BC/RL7 contact is an unconformity between moderately weak quartz-biotite schists below (unconfined compressive strength 40 - 80 MN/M 2), and strong quartzites above (U .C .S. 170-200 MN/M2) Subsequent formations are conformable, and planes of weakness are generally the result of contrasting lithology (see below). Weak Interbeds The Rt7, RL6, RL5, RL3 and RU2 horizons consist predominantly of quartzitic rocks, i.e. conglomerates, quartzites and argillites, and as such are generally strong and considered suitable for the positioning of development. Between these however, lie two much weaker dolomitic horizons, the RL4 and RU1. The Rt4 is the main hangingwall aquifer, and must be drained prior to mining. Drainage results in an extremely weak, blocky cavernous horizon which usually requires support if exposed by development. Similarly, the RU1 formation is comprised mainly of dolomites and dolomitic arqillites which are weak and cavernous. In the eastern part of the Roan/

Marine phosphorite deposits occur in Braxil, in the Bambui Group of late Precambrian or Early Cambrian age. The phosphorite is laminated, isoclinally folded, and is composed of black, elongated apatite pellets and quartz grains cemented by quartz and muscovite. Abundant, narrow quartz veinlets cut through the .rock at right angles to the elongation direction of the pellets. The phosphorite is 0 to 80 m thick and contains 5 to 30 percent P2O5. The deposit is elongate towards the northeast, and the central, thickest, and richest part is bounded by faults. Measured reserves are about 250 million tons that average a bout 13 % P205. Preliminary testing indicates that grinding, scrubbing, and desliming will produce a material usable for fertilizer manufacture at a cost competitive with imported phosphate fertilizers.

A cellular precipitation reaction in which cells consisting of an Ni3Ti (DO24) phase and austenite are formed has been studied in an austenitic Fe-30 Ni-6 Ti alloy. The variation of the growth rate and interlamellar spacing of the Ni3Ti cells with temperature has been determined m the range 400" to 975°C; the interlamellar spacing is proportional to the degree of undercooling; the growth rate can be expressed by an equation of the form G = K?T)2 exp(-Q/RT). The habit of the Ni3Ti lamellae is (001)Ni3Ti (111)y;[010]Ni3T2 [010]y. An almost perfectly coherent interface is formed between Ni3Ti lamellae with this orientation rela -tionship and the intervening austenite. This first Ni3Ti cellular product is subsequently consumed by a second cellular reaction of much coarser spacing. CELLULAR precipitation reactions have been studied in copper-base,1,2 Au-Ni,3 pb-sn,4 and iron-base ferritic5,6 solid solutions, and this mode of precipitation has been treated theoretically by smith," Turnbull,8,9 cahn,10 and more recently by bohm.11 In the case of substitutional austenitic iron-base alloys little or no data are available, Cellular precipitation reactions are well known in austenitic nickel-base alloys12,13 but usually these reactions do not proceed to completion because of general precipitation occurring in the matrix, and they have not been studied in detail. Precipitation from an austenitic Fe-30 Ni-6 Ti alloy was studied as part of a larger investigation of the mechanisms of precipitation from substitutional iron-base alloys. This alloy, austenitic at high temperatures, decomposes at lower temperatures by a double cellular precipitation reaction. The first decomposition product consists of alternate lamellae of an Ni3Ti(DO24) phase and austenite. The reaction proceeds to completion, consuming all of the original austenite. This first cellular product is subsequently consumed by a second cellular reaction of much coarser spacing. The first cellular reaction was studied in detail by light and electron microscopy, hardness measurements, and by X-ray and electron diffraction. Interlamellar spacings and growth rates were measured during isothermal aging in the range 400" to 975°C. The orientation relationship between the Ni3Ti and austenite lamellae was determined and indicates that an almost perfectly coherent interface exists between the two phases. This first Ni3Ti cellular reaction is of particular interest because it occurs over such a wide temperature interval. This allows cellular growth rates and interlamellar spacing data to be obtained for much larger degrees of undercooling than reported hitherto. In spite of the very general errlployment of nitride hardening, there is still considerable doubt as to the real nature of the mechanism involved. Experience has shown that the addition of small amounts of hardening elements to iron or steel results in a wide variety of desirable properties in a nitrided case. Perhaps the foremost of these elements is aluminum and in this investigation an attempt has been made to study the behavior of aluminum during the hardening process. It is believed that the establishment of a complete atomic picture of the metal at various stages of the process will indicate the relationships between the several kinds of atoms and their individual influences on the physical properties in a clear and direct fashion. A consideration of the problem suggests a surprising similarity between the mechanisms of nitride hardening and of age-hardening. It is now generally understood that age-hardening may take place by one of two distinct processes, the first involving the precipitation of a finely dispersed phase and the other being concerned with the modification of an existing phase. Following much the same line of reasoning, two theories of nitride hardening have been suggested. The first explanation, which has been generally discussed, particularly by Fry,' states in brief that the presence of aluminum causes the precipitation of aluminum nitride during nitriding and that this finely dispersed phase is the primary cause of hardening. The second explanation, which has not been published but which has been freely discussed by those interested in the problem, postulates the substitution of aluminum atoms for certain of the iron atoms in the several iron-nitrogen phases in the same manner that the substitutional iron-alurninurn solid solution is formed. The marked increase in hardness, as compared with the aluminum-free system, is attributed to the severe lattice distortion accompanying this replacement.

In this theoretical paper, a transport-reaction mechanism is suggested for the enhancement of the rate of vaporization of metals, or other materials, brought about by the process of convection and condensation. Based on theoretical reasoning it is predicted that, when there is a temperature gradient surrounding the heated object, a slight increase in the rate of vaporization brought about by natural convection is enhanced further as a result of condensation of the vapor close to the surface of the object. In order to derive the effective vapor-concentration profile, consideration is given to the super saturation of the vapor necessary for the homogeneous nucleation of the condensed phase from the vapor. For the formulation of the rate equation based on this mechanism, adequate information should be available on the transport properties of gases and vapors at elevated temperatures and the method of calculating nucleation pressures of the vapor. The methods of deriving such data are discussed in the paper and a rate equation is calculated for the vaporization of iron in helium for various temperature gradients in the boundary layer. Considerations are also given to the effect of oxygen on rates of vaporization of metals under isother ma1 and nonisotherma1 conditions. THE study of the methods of enhancement or retardation of basically transport-controlled vaporization reactions is of theoretical interest with possible practical implications. There are several ways of bringing about such effects. For example, Turk-dogan, Grieveson, and Darken1 demonstrated that the rates of vaporization of metals under isothermal conditions were increased by several orders of magnitude, up to the maximum rate attainable in vacuo, by introducing some reacting gas into the inert atmosphere surrounding the metal. Such an effect is brought about by the interaction of the counter-diffusing reacting gas and metal vapor in close proximity of the metal-gas interface. Another case which is often experienced in practice is that of vaporization affected by natural convection. Although several theoretical and experimental studies of this problem have already been made, no detailed consideration has been given to the possible effects of condensation of the vapor in the boundary layer on vaporization rates, which constitutes the subject matter of this paper. BASIC CONCEPT OF ENHANCED DIFFUSION-LIMITED VAPORIZATION When a heated object, for example a metal sphere, is submerged in a fluid medium, heat is transferred from the surface of the object to its surroundings by four simultaneously occurring transfer processes: i) free-molecular conduction at the gas-solid interface over the distance equal to the mean free path of the gas, ii) conduction and convection through the fluid-dynamic boundary layer, iii) latent heat of mass transferred, and it!) radiation. The free-molecular conduction becomes pronounced only when the total pressure in the system is very low, e.g., below 1 mm Hg. Therefore, this term may be neglected for ordinary pressures. At low mass-transfer rates, due to vaporization of the object, the contribution of process iii) to the heat transfer can also be neglected. Finally, since the temperature profile is not affected by radiation, the latter need not be considered. A mathematical model of reservoir behavior during one cycle of the intermittent steam injection process is presented in this paper. A cycle of the process is considered to be composed of three stages: injection, condensation and production. The model concentrates on behavior during the production stage. The influence of several parameters on production improvement is described, using the results obtained with a numerical equivalent of the model. Reservoir system parameters considered are thickness, reservoir thermal conductivity, oil viscosity, solution gas-oil ratio and the change in oil effective permeability with temperature. Operating parameters investigated are heat injection rate, steam temperature and cumulative injection time. In the face of considerable uncertainty, the model appears to give a fair prediction of the behavior observed during an actual test. This makes the model a useful means of selecting projects. It is shown that the model may also be utilized to select an optimum set of operating conditions for a particular project. Results of this study show the extent to which production improvement depends on each of the parameters investigated and give an indication of the range of system conditions within which the process would be effective. INTRODUCTION In recent years the intermittent steam injection or steam soak process of oil recovery has become a popular method of improving recovery in reservoirs bearing high-viscosity hydrocarbons. Production improvement due to the process results from heating the reservoir near the wellbore. The process is applied on an individual well basis and is executed in a series of cycles, each consisting of three stages: injection, condensation (the soaking period) and production. During the injection stage, high-pressure steam is injected into the reservoir surrounding the well-bore. This study assumes that injection is carried out over the entire vertical section of the reservoir rock that can be exposed to fluid injection. The condition of steam entering the reservoir is considered to fall within the following limits: (1) steam pressures less than 1,000 psig, (2) steam temperatures between 300 and 700F and (3) steam quality less than 90 percent. The last restriction is due to equipment limitations. Normally, injection re maintained for less than 3 weeks. After termination of injection, the condensation stage begins. The well is shut in for several days, supposedly to make certain that the injected steam condenses. This condensation would insure the retention of injected heat. The production stage is initiated when the well is opened again. Reservoir response during this stage determines the effectiveness of the process (response is defined as the oil production rates, the water production rates and the wellbore temperatures observed during the entire production stage). The immediate response of the reservoir is sometimes quite good. Sets of case histories by Longl and by Owens and Suter2 give some typical figures for response. Duration of the production stage is equal to the time needed for the oil production rate to decline to some predetermined value. This usually requires 4 to 6 months. Termination of the production stage coincides with the start of the next cycle. The process is continued, cycle by cycle, until it becomes unprofitable to continue. One simple model2 and two more sophisticated models3,4 of the process have been presented. These are based on fundamentally different assumptions than those used in this investigation. BAUXITE, at first considered as a mineralogical curiosity without importance, now attracts daily increased attention from mineralogists, geologists, and manufacturers. The metallurgy of aluminum, which has entered with the advent of electrolysis upon a new phase within the last few years, requires every day larger quantities of pure alumina, and this can only be obtained from bauxite, which is, of known substances, the richest in free alumina. Bauxite has been mined since 1872 in France, whereabout 200,000 tons have been produced, and where, as a natural consequence, its deposits, qualities, and applications have become known. Within a few years past, discoveries of important deposits of bauxite have been made in the United States and Canada, and this almost entirely new subject has thus acquired an additional interest for the mining engineers and metallurgists of the American continent. A brief summary of the available data concerning it appears likely, therefore, to be appropriate and valuable.* I.—HISTORICAL. Tonejc The present communication is concerned with the variation of the texture in aluminum wires with die angle and temperature, at constant speed of extrusion. Experiments were carried out concurrently on refined samples, with a stated purity of 99.997 pct pure A1 and commercial samples of 99.5 pct Al. Ingots of refined aluminum samples were machined to 30-mm-diam by 150-mm-long billets. These billets were transformed to 5-mm-diam wires by drawing. The final form, suitable for examination, was obtained by extrusion through conical-face dies with a 1-mm hole diam and extrusion ratio 5:l in diam. The initial form of the commercial aluminum samples was drawn wire 5 mm in diam. These samples showed a poorly defined texture with (111) as a major and (001) as a minor component. A similar defined texture appeared in the refined aluminum samples after drawing to 5 mm diam. Conical-face dies with different angles (defined by the axis and the generating line of the cone) were used in our experiments. The values of the angles were 27, 35, 45, 57, 63, and 90 deg. The extrusion container was fitted with a heating element and controller permitting temperatures up to 600°C to be maintained within i5"C. Extrusion was performed at 250°, 300°, 350°, 400°, and 500°C at constant speed (approximately 1 mm per sec) and constant die reduction. The extrusion product was a wire 1 mm in diam and approximately 20 cm long. In order to remove the surface layer with the "conical" texture and to reduce the absorption by the X-ray examination of the samples, the extruded wire was etched to 0.22 mm in diam. Experiments were performed in the middle sections of the 20-cm-long wires. In addition to the die of l-mm hole diam, dies with a 1.5-, 0.7-, 0.6-, 0.5-, and 0.4-mm hole diam and 63-deg die angle were constructed. In our experiments we did not find in these ranges any important difference concerning the texture of the extruded wires and we continued our work solely on the 1.0-mm die. The diffracted X-rays (Cu K radiation) were recorded photographically. Diffracted intensities were measured on the (111) reflection with a microphotometer. The relative amounts of texture components were determined from the areas under the diffracted maxima. We found the texture of extruded aluminum wires to be strongly influenced not only by the temperature of extrusion and the purity of the sample but also by the form of the die. It is generally admitted that cold-drawn aluminum wires have mainly a (111) texture with a small amount of (001) component, Table I of Ref. 1. In our experiments with wires extruded in conditions represented by Fig. 1, in some cases a single (001) texture was obtained. If these wires were drawn repeatedly at room temperature, X-ray measurements revealed a duplex (001)-(111) fiber texture. Further drawings increased the (111) and decreased the (001) texture component. In Fig. 1 the percentage of material oriented with (001) parallel to the extrusion direction is represented as a function of the temperature and the die angle (a), for commercial and refined aluminum samples, respectively. From these diagrams we may draw the following conclusions. The slope of the die (a) influenced more strongly the texture at the lower rather than the higher temperatures. Again, a stronger influence was found in the case of the commercial in comparison with refined aluminum samples. In the case of the commercial aluminum samples the amount of material with (001) texture increases with increasing wire temperature in an approximately linear manner. This effect is less pronounced in the pure aluminum samples, with the exception of the die with a = 45 deg. In this case the (001) texture decreases with increasing temperature, as shown in Fig. 1. Component (001) is more pronounced in higher-purity aluminum samples. Our experiments led to the conclusion that both (001) and (111) components are essentially stable in extruded aluminum wires. As we obtained a single (001) texture starting with a sample of drawn wire in which the (001) component was very weak, our experiments revealed that the (001) component is not a remnant of the initial texture; this is in disagreement with the findings of Vandermeer and McHargue.1 We gratefully acknowledge discussions with Professor M. (communication to the Secretary): The importance of carbon in pig-iron, as well as the desirability of buying, for some purposes, irons which are high in carbon, has always been recognized. Mr. Summers, I think, has given undue weight to the carbon-determinations. The combined carbon often decreases materially as the center of the pig is approached, with a corresponding increase in the graphite. Even the determination of total carbon, to be of service, must he supplemented by that of other elements. By it alone, the softness of a foundry-iron cannot be determined. Car-wheels and No. 5 iron, for instance, frequently contain 3.75 per cent. of carbon. This is the percentage specified by Mr. Summers for his No. 1 iron, " with the silicon about anywhere the furnace-man wants it." It is true that, other things being equal, the higher the carbon the softer the iron for foundry-use. But to introduce any given percentages of graphitic and total carbon into a pig-iron specification would but make the specification more complicated, without increasing its value in a commensurate degree. Mr. Summers does not believe in the governing of mixtures by the silicon, and, in support of his views, gives several tables. It seems to me that both his conclusions and his tables are somewhat unsatisfactory. He comments on the irregularity in carbon, but fails to note the significance of the irregularity in silicon..The variation of 0.7 per cent. in silicon, for example, is too great to be accounted for by difference in blast. It might better be attributed to bad grading at the furnace, unsystematic sampling, or irregular charging. Deductions drawn under such conditions are of little value. The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining-maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may he what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will he saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. Ultrahigh-speedphotographic and electronic meth-ods were applied to an investigation of details of brittle-fracture propagation in steel. The brittle fractures studied were obtained in steel plate with the aid of a Robertson apparatus. It was found that a brittle fracture proceeds by discrete steps ranging from 30 mm near the stop temperature to less than 2 mm at lower temperatures. The halting FROM prior metallographic observations of brittle fracture in steel' it could be concluded that the distribution of mechanical twins along a brittle fracture was similar to the distribution of mechanical twins induced by explosive deformation. It was therefore assumed that a running brittle fracture created stress waves, cf. Refs. 2-7. An emission of stress waves by a brittle fracture, however, seems only conceivable if the fracture propagates by discrete steps. For this reason a study of the details of times between successive steps drop in this tem-perature region from 20 usec to about 1 psec. The stepwise propagation mechanism is accompanied by an intermittent emission of stress waves of the order of 100 to 200 kg per sq mm. These stress waves seen1 to play an important role in the mechanism of brittle fracture as will be discussed. brittle-fracture propagation was undertaken to investigate the possible determination of the fracture steps and the emitted stress waves associated with the assumed mechanism. The more practical object of this work is the development of a test method for the determination of the ductile-brittle transition in small specimens. This has special advantages for the study of irradiation damage in steel. In this test method, which will be published in a following paper, the stress waves emitted by an actual brittle fracture are reproduced with explosive or electrical means and are then transmitted through small specimens at various temperatures. In the present paper only the results of the brittle-fracture study will be reported.

While mining silver at Butte in 1882, Marcus Daly is reputed to have told his partners in The Anaconda Silver Mining Co., "It looks rather gloomy. The vein is running into copper." Recently, The Anaconda Co. authorized an $11 million expenditure to be made over the next five years to ensure their "running into copper" at deep levels for many more years. The new development program is designed to permit both deeper and more widespread selective mining in "the richest hill on earth" by means of additional shaft-sinking, reactivating closed mines, and establishing new haulageways and centralized hoisting facilities. Historically a deep level selective mining camp, Butte will now continue its uncommon use of three main types of mining methods at one camp-selective mining, block caving, and open pit mining. It was thought by some people that the construction of the Kelley shaft and the subsequent beginning of block caving operations in 1952-outgrowth of the Greater Butte Project-signaled the end of stope mining of high-grade ores at depth. This feeling became more pronounced when, in 1957, the Berkeley open pit commenced operations. During recent years, the tonnage of ore mined selectively underground has decreased, but the new program will maintain the position of selective underground mining in the overall picture of the Butte operations for many years to come.

For the third consecutive year, predicted increases in coal production and consumption failed to materialize. Production of bituminous, sub-bituminous and lignite coal for 1961 was estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at 400 million tons, a drop of 15,- 512,000 tons from the 1960 figure. Anthracite production for the year was 17.8 million tons compared to 18.8 million tons produced in 1960. Consumption figures are expected to show a proportionate decline. Of coal's major markets, only electric utilities showed an increase-and even here the increase of approximately 2% was smaller than had been expected. Major cause of relatively low consumption was a decrease of more than 20% in the use of metallurgical coal for making coke. Reductions of lesser importance were registered in general industrial, retail, and export markets.

A proposed technique for improving coal-mine roof stability by softening parts of coal pillars along the sides of entries developed from structural analysis is presented. This technique is based on the transference of the high stress concentration in the roof near the upper corners of a rectangular opening to the roof rock and coal over the solid away from the opening. This transferral is accomplished by softening parts of the coal pillars by drilling a series of parallel holes into the coal in the ribs and face of the entry prior to advance. The effectiveness of the pillar softening in terms of reducing the opening width (so that the stress in the roof near the corner is equivalent to that of a narrower opening) ranges from 3 to 5 ft for a 16-ft entry using a series of 4 to 5-ft-deep parallel drill holes of 3 to 6-in.-diam on a 1 to 2-ft spacing for a particular geology. Pillar softening should be highly effective in controlling roof where cutter-roof cave conditions exist, because this technique reduces the high stress concentration in the roof at the upper corners of the opening. It may also be effective for reducing tensile roof failure and coal rib sloughing for certain specific geological conditions. This technique appears to be a simple, effective, and practical method that can be used to supplement conventional roof support methods of roof bolting, timbering, roof truss, and other existing methods in underground coal mines. The authors consider the technique feasible and believe that it merits underground trials.

Pill Florida hard-rock field extends from Suwanee and Columbia Counties in northwest Florida to south of Croom, Florida, in Hernando County this area is approximately 100 miles long and varies from 2 to 30 miles 1n width Florida hard-rock phosphate was discovered at Hale Springs, about one mile northwest of the town of Dunnellon Marion County, in the year 1888, by Albertus Voight who lived within a few hundred yards of the spring Soon after this discovery there was a great influx of land speculators and wildcat operators into the vicinity of Dunnellon A few years later phosphate was found in Alachua, Levy, Citrus and Hernando Counties, and a great number of small crude plants were built from Newberry, Alachua County, all the way to Croom, Hernando County Phosphate was found in many places as "outcrops " Looking for outcrops was the first method used by the early prospectors in searching for deposits Several years passed before any systematic method of prospecting was used EARLY MINING The early method of mining hard-rock phosphate was with picks and shovels, wheelbarrows, mules and wagons The pick-and-shovel method was used altogether until about 1900, when some of the larger operators began to use railroad-type steam shovels of from 1/2 to 1-yd capacity Picks and shovels, with negro labor loading the phosphate ore (called "matrix") into wooden side-dump skip-cars, was continued until about 1907 From the discovery of hard-rock phosphate until approximately 1905, overburden was removed with mules and scrapers At some places, the overburden was loaded into side-du nip skip-cars by negro laborers and the cars were then pulled up an incline with a steam hoisting engine The maximum depth of overburden that could be economically removed by hand labor mules and scrapers was approximately 15 feet About 1905 one of the companies erected a producer-gas powerhouse near Dunnellon and generated its own electricity and about the same time the larger companies began using hydraulic methods for the removal of overburden From the year 1888 through the year 1939, approximately 75 companies were operating at one time or another in the hard-rock territory, on approximately 500 locations The hard-rock deposits are more irregular and have higher mining costs than the pebble-rock deposits, therefore they have not been competitive in the domestic market, but because of the higher grade of the hard rock it is in demand for the export trade Discovery of phosphate outside of the United States has made it increasingly difficult in recent years for the hard-rock companies to survive, so today only three companies are operating These

The removal of sulfur from steel has been studied by many investigators, but the quantitative relationships between the factors involved have not been determined. This is undoubtedly due to the number of variables encountered in practice, an attempt to study any one reaction or relation being affected by other reactions the relative importance of which cannot be estimated. The factors that affect the extent of removal of sulfur in the basic open-hearth process are generally considered to be: 1. Basicity of the slag: (a) Iron oxides in the slag; (b) carbon in the metal or carbide in the slag; (c) temperature. These factors affect the reactions: FeS + CaO = CaS + FeO FeS + CaO + C = CaS + CO + Fe. 2. Amount of sulfur in the gas. 3. Amount of manganese in the metal. The factors which affect the rate of removal of sulfur include, in addition to these: 4. Fluidity of the slag: (a) Normal changes in fluidity with temperature; (b) changes in fluidity because of the addition of special reagents such as fluorspar. 5. Agitation of the bath. Within the past two years, two papers have been presented dealing with the influence of sulfur in the gas on slag and metal.
