MANY of the magnesite ores of the western part of the United States contain such large amounts of silica and hydrous silicate minerals that the value of the ores is either low or nominal. Expensive and carefully controlled mining methods are necessary to prevent excessive dilution of the higher grade ores by introduction in mining of small pieces of the hanging walls or footwalls of the deposit. This difficulty is further complicated by the various states of decomposition of the country rock of the deposits in which many of the ores occur. The problem the authors attempted to solve arose from a request to float an impure magnesite containing varying proportions of siliceous gangue with calcium carbonate. The ore is normally enclosed in-serpen-tine masses, somewhat decomposed, and in mining it wall rock is inci-dentally added, so that variable amounts of siliceous material occur in the samples. The silica, alumna, and iron oxide are so closely associated with the magnesium carbonate in the magnesite that ordinary mechanical separation at coarse mesh sizes is of no avail. It is well known that calcium carbonate can be floated by suitable reagents, therefore it seemed reasonable to suppose that magnesium carbonate minerals would behave in a similar manner, but experimental trial proved that this supposition was unfounded. Therefore the first step in the problem was to find out what differences of behavior there were between magnesium and calcium carbonates under flotation conditions, or when suspended in water. In water at 18° C. magnesium carbonate is slightly more soluble than calcium carbonate; in fact; MgCO3 is soluble to the extent of 0.0106 grams in 100 c.c. of water at 18° C. and CaCO3 to the extent of 0.0013 grams. However, magnesium carbonate in water gradually changes to the basic carbonates of a composition (3MgCO3.Mg(OH)23H20) or (4MgCO3.Mg(OH)25H20), depending upon conditions, and calcium carbonate to calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2. The zone-melting technique can be adapted for the de-termination of the eutectic composition in complex metal systerrzs. The application of this method is demonstrated in a simple eutectic system, Mg-AE, in which the eutectic composition is known and in a complex ternary system, Mg-Al-Zn, in which the literature is uncertain as to the composition of the ternary eutectic. The advantages and limitations of this unique approach for the determirution of the eutectic composition are discussed. ThE eutectic composition in phase diagrams is usually determined by thermal analysis of a series of arbitarily selected alloy compositions. The temperatures of the liquidus and eutectic arrests for each alloy are plotted and the eutectic composition is estimated by extrapolation to the entectic temperature of the curve formed by the liquidus arrest temperatures for the series of alloys. Although this approach readily yields the eutectic temperatures, several dekrminations are needed to estimate the eutectic composition, even in a simple system. In a complex ternary system, a great many determinations are often necessary to estimate, even approximately, the ternary eutectic composition. Thus, the conventional method is inherently tedious and time consuming. The application of zone melting provides a relatively efficient method of determining the eutectic composition.' As an illustration, consider the zone melting of an alloy composition C, in the simple eutectic system A-B, shown in Fig. 1, under the ideal conditions of infinitely rapid diffusion in the liquid, no diffusion in the solid, and ease of nucleation of both phases. As the zone moves along the bar, the composition of the zone is enriched by solute rejected during the freezing of the a phase and the zone composition approaches the eutectic composition CE.Once the zone composition attains the lowest melting composition, i.e., the eutectic composition, it remains at this composition as the zone moves along the bar and finally freezes as such at the end of the bar. Chemical analysis of the end of such a zone-melted bar then should yield the eutectic composition CE of the system A-B. A corresponding analysis can be made for a ternary eutectic system. Under the ideal conditions noted above, only one pass of the molten zone is required to yield the eutectic composition. Experimentally, however, a solute-rich layer forms at the solid-liquid interface2 and the composition of the zone does not attain the eutectic composition as rapidly or as uniformly as in the ideal case outlined above. But with agitation of the melt, the ideal conditions can be approximated experimentally. Also, as shown below, zone melting permits a cumulative build-up of the solute at the end of the bar to the eutectic composition. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate this unique method for determining the eutectic composition. The method is here applied to two systems: first, to the binary Mg-A1 system, in which the composition is well established, and second, to the complex Mg-Al-Zn system in which there is doubt concerning the composition of the ternary eutectic. This study of the relationship of the accumulation and drainage of oil to the structural conditions in the Wilmington oil field is presented with the hope that the data contained herein will aid in efficient exploita-tion of other fields where similar conditions exist. It is also probable that the conditions observed in this field will enable accurate comparisons of various well-spacing programs as to efficiency of production and ultimate recovery. W. W. (Pop) Adams' contribution is short and to the point. "I went to Pueblo about March, 1881, and started working for the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co. in the sampling room, going from there to the assay and chemical departments, and ending in charge of the lead refinery on the night shift. I was there about two years, returning to California in 1883. The plant was under the management of Mather and Geist, plus Charley Ballard; Herman Schlapp was the metallurgist. Herman Schlapp's name remains prominently in my recollection of Pueblo for his never-failing kindness and charity to the young men who were trying to learn the Pb. game. John Allen, Walter Koehler, George Westcott, Charley Molson, and Alfred de Ropp were there with me. Schlapp and Koehler I have never seen since I left Pueblo; the others I have met often. , Alfred de Ropp I have often met-here, as he was manager of the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. of San Francisco, for years. 'He tells me that I gave him the rudiments. of American profanity at Pueblo; an apt pupil, for since then, by his own efforts, he has added largely to his vocabulary..

In an article on magnesium and its alloys, Gann and Winston! stated that manganese has a limited solubility in the liquid state. W. Schmidt2 showed a diagram according to Joseph Ruhrmann indicating that the solubility of manganese in liquid magnesium falls from about 2.65 per cent at 790°C. to about 0.5 per cent at 675°C. The curve was extrapolated to show zero solubility at the melting point of pure magnesium (Fig. I). This work suggested that at the lowest manganese contents it was not possible to detect either a eutectic or the formation of a solid solution, so that manganese was stated to be present in the structure as large individual crystals. Two years after the presentation of, these results, Gann3 brought evidence to show that some manganese is capable of dissolving to form a solid solution, any excess of manganese present then assuming chiefly the form of small blue-gray particles scattered throughout the primary magnesium crystals, occasionally in clusters but seldom at the boundaries. He presented micrographs of cast alloys containing 0.1, 0.4 and 1.0 per cent manganese that show a small amount of coring around the individual particles due to solid solution, and indicate that the location of the manganese particles is closely associated with the original dendritic structure of the primary crystallization. He also pointed out that the amount of manganese that can be dissolved in magnesium depends on the amount of other alloying elements present, the effect of the second alloying element being to decrease the amount of manganese retained in the alloy. E. Schmid and G. Siebe14 have determined the solid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature by means of precision X-ray diffraction measurements. They found that the solubility is 3.4 per cent at 645°C. and decreases to practically zero at 200°C. It is apparent that the X-ray diffraction measurements of Schmid and Siebel are not in agreement with the results of Ruhrmann as presented by Schmidt. This disagreement, and also the lack of data on magnesium-aluminum-manganese and magnesium-zinc-manganese systems, led the author to the present investigation, to determine accurately the liquid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature. Experimental Method The experimental method for making solubility determinations consists of saturating the molten magnesium or the alloys with manganese at various temperatures and analyzing the dip samples taken from these melts. Melting is carried out in a cylindrical steel pot heated by an electric resistance furnace. The pot had a metallic outside coating to protect the steel against oxidation, and a graphite inside lining to prevent the contamination of the melt by prolonged contact with iron. The inside diameter of the pot was 4 in. and the depth 12 inches.

Discussion of the paper of R. DAWSON HALL, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 105, September, 1915, pp. 2013 to 2021. R. DAWSON HALL, New York, N. Y.-The general practice in the past has been to view the roof as being somewhat subject only to shear. In fact the action of the roof under the stress of its own weight has been but little considered, not because the matter is unimportant but because it is so complicated that it has been felt that an analysis of it would not result in any conclusions definite enough to justify the inquiry. The result has been that the consideration of the subject has fallen into the hands of persons who are not experts in the study of beam and plate stress. They have been disposed naturally to view the destruction of the roof as the outcome of the simplest of stresses-vertical shear. In the lack of a careful consideration of the conditions of roof fracture it was thought that the roof consisted of a number of horizontal layers, which were each of them weak, because, no matter how strong they might be they usually lacked sufficient depth. This view of the condition of the roof would naturally lead one to expect that it would yield to bending moment, the various layers succumbing one by one to their lack of the necessary radius of gyration to meet such severe stresses. Probably the earliest concentration of iron ore in this country was carried on in the northeastern magnetite areas. Magnetic concentration was relatively simple and gave a concentrate that, after agglomeration, and in spite of being high in phosphorus because of the dry concentrating methods then in use, was satisfactory blast-furnace feed. Production from the northeastern magnetite area languished after the discovery and development of the Lake Superior ores, where there was seemingly an unlimited tonnage of high-grade ore, first the Michigan ores, and subsequently the still larger deposits of Minnesota. For years only the higher grade, direct shipping ores of the Lake Superior district were mined. Those of Michigan, and of the Vermilion Range in Minnesota, were hard ores and came principally from underground mines. The softer ores of the Mesabi came partly from underground mines, but mostly from the enormous deposits that could be worked by open-pit methods. The costs of ore from these open-pit deposits, even with the high initial cost of stripping, were so low that the underground mines of the Mesabi could hardly compete. The so-called Old Range ores, of Michigan and of the Vermilion. Range of Minnesota, were hard and lumpy, and opened UP the burden in the blast furnace, therefore making possible harder driving with greater output. Also, some of these ores were of such grade and physical characteristics that they were suitable for charge ore in the open hearth. These ores, therefore, commanded a price premium, and could compete with the softer, finer, but cheaper, Mesabi ores. The big tonnage reserves, however, are on the Mesabi. and it is these big open-pit deposits that constitute our stock pile of iron ore, from which we are drawing so heavily during this war period. On the western end of the Mesabi the ore was found to be high in silica, and not suitable as furnace feed. As early as 1902, attempts were made to concentrate this so-called wash ore and by 1910 the first washing plant was put into operation. The Process was very simple, consisting essentially of a sizing and washing operation, with scalping screens, logwashers, and tables, which later were replaced by classifiers. Ore particles finer than 100 mesh were deliberately wasted, because these fines were undesirable in the furnace. Fortunately, these tailings were impounded, and already are being reworked. Before long some of the low-grade ores began to require more elaborate treatment than the simple washing operation and, tables having been discarded because of their low capacity, in favor of classifiers, jigs were next introduced. These were able to discard coarser pieces of tailing than classifiers. jigs are in active use today, various improvements having been made in their design and application. With problems of diminishing ore grades and increasing cost of facilities, the mineral industry is acutely aware of the needs for improving beneficiation processes. Industry and universities are directing intensive technical effort to develop- ment of techniques with potential for using digital computers in automation and process analysis. The main problem of early attempts at on-line computer process control methods was that of economics. Now, with new advances in analysis and modeling making practical application economically important, it appears that minerals beneficiation is on the threshold of a significant jump in operating technology. In reviewing this work, particular note was taken of research and development applied to fundamental processes and the significant areas of effort where operations research techniques are used for process applications leading to the current state-of-the-art. Development of data automation and on-line control methods for process industries is deferred to the next section of this volume. This section deals with computer-facilitated mathematical-modeling development and reviews this work in conjunction with associated prior fundamental research leading to development of the methods. Flotation The 1960 state-of -the -art in flotation modeling was com- piled by Arbiter and Harris in the volume, 50th Anniversary of Froth Flotation, edited by Fuerstenau1. Many workers in the field of flotation initiated their research through flotation models, and this effort has led to use of simulation and operations re search methods employing computer techniques to facilitate advance of this work. The flotation model of Imaizumi and Inoue, published with supporting data in 1962, was expanded in 1968 with the objective of developing a basis for process automation.2,3 The fundamental work of Woodburn and Loveday in 1965 has led to techniques applicable to flotation circuit design optimization.4 This analysis is described in this volume by Woodburn in conjunction with King, Buchalter, and Piper. The tabular statement accompanying this note shows the money cost in each of the three departments of manufacture, of 17 leading items, and also the proportion (expressed in a clecimal fraction) which each of these items bears to the total cost. The statement can hardly be taken for more than an average illustration of the clear showing of ratios and of results which may be made by such an arrangement, for not only will these items vary from month to month in any given works, but the methods themselves of manufacture differ widely in different works. It is obvious that such a statement, however useful it may be, must be submitted with but exceedingly little explanation or discussion, or with none at all, for the reason that to enter at any satisfac-

Gary Works No. 1 BOP Shop is a three furnace shop which went into operation December, 1965. The heat size is over 200 tons, with a substantial percentage of the production used to feed a Continuous Slab Caster. Vessels are driven by a shaft mounted bull gear and main housing utilizing eight 35 HP flange mounted motors and primary gear reducers. Torque absorption is controlled by two spring actuated torque arms. At 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 1970, as "E" furnace was being turned down for a preliminary test, the drive side trunnion bearing failed. The furnace dropped slightly and shifted several inches north in the direction of the drive unit. The decision was made to tap the heat which was done without incident and the vessel uprighted. No attempt was made to completely drain the slag from the vessel, so as to avoid any further damage to the trunnion shaft bearing surface. The bearing failure occurred approximately four years and eight months after start up of the shop. Unfortunately ?M? furnace had gone down for a normal reline two days prior to the bearing failure, leaving the shop with only one operating furnace.

In view of the recent important discussions before this Institute on the genesis of metalliferous deposits, certain features in the occurrence of gold which seem to be more clearly developed in Brazil than elsewhere can hardly fail to be of interest. As the observations here recorded have necessarily been of a somewhat cursory character, they will be presented in the form of brief notes, without any attempt to draw conclusions as to their genetic significance. Various semiempirical equations which relate defect-formation energies and entropies with elastic and thermal properties of a metal crystal are shown to be related by a simple model for lattice energy. An illustrative comparison of theory with experiment is made using self-diffilsion data for fee metals. SEVERAL workers have related the free energy of defect formation with elastic and thermal properties of a crystal lattice, particularly elastic bulk modulus and Debye temperature. The present note shows how the various approaches are related by a simple model for lattice energy. The importance of ladle and teeming practice and its relationship to the yield and quality of the product has focused considerable attention on this phase of open-hearth operation. Inherently bad steel cannot be perfected by manipulation during teeming, but through the proper handling of "off heats" serious losses, which in many cases arise, can be greatly minimized. Conversely, good steel can be ruined as a result of poor workmanship in the pit, and rendered unsuitable for application to orders where exacting surface and physical requirements are essential. Sufficient evidence has been secured to warrant careful investigation of pit operations when an abnormal number of basic defects develop in the semifinished product or are found on the inspection table. This paper is written from the standpoint of the problems involved in making satisfactory ingots for sheet rolling. Furthermore, since rimming steel is almost universally used for manufacture of sheet, the data presented herein refer particularly to that type of steel. Going back some 30 years in open-hearth history, the word "pit" properly described the hole into which the ladle was lowered to receive the metal tapped from the furnace. The working space was necessarily limited, and the disposal of slag and metal overflowing the ladle or lost because of breakouts presented a serious problem. The equipment, of course, was rather crude in the light of present-day development. Often no ladle stands were provided, the ladle being hung on the crane beneath the runner. When delayed taps occurred, the ladle was often held in position for many hours, thus tying up pit operations and causing delays to adjacent furnaces. Because of crowded conditions, slag thimbles were not used and a network of cast-steel triangles and old tapping bars, placed before the heat was tapped, was the means for removing slag from the hole. DURING the past few years there has been considerable activity in prospecting for oil and gas in several parts of western Washington. From time to time seepages of oil or emanations of gas have been reported from various places. Several companies have been organized for the purpose of drilling, but only a part of these have actually begun operations. In certain localities very small seepages of oil occur, but up to the present time no oil or gas in commercial quantities has been obtained. In order to determine the conditions which may be favorable or unfavorable 'to the occurrence of petroleum it becomes necessary to know the character and extent of the geological formations in which such deposits might occur. In other regions where producing wells have been developed it is possible to know what formations contain the oil mind what structural conditions influence its concentration in reservoirs or zones. It is usually possible to determine those strata which contained the a materials from which the petroleum may have been derived and also the position and distribution of the more porous sandstone belts into which it may have collected. Detailed stratigraphic surveys, may even determine the depth at, which a certain known oil-bearing zone may be tapped at any particular place. It is also possible to recognize those formations which are presumably barren of oil, as well as those which are absolutely so.

The hydrometallurgical application of thiourea in processing precious metal ores and concentrates has reached the development stage. This paper reviews recent technical literature covering the process development of thiourea leaching. In addition, recent fundamental contributions are discussed. Most of the interest in thiourea leaching has involved treating high grade concentrates that have sufficient value to just the use of thiourea as a reagent. An important development in thiourea technology is the addition of SO2 to the leaching solution. This procedure effectively reduces the decomposition of thiourea and eliminates the problems of passive surface layers that limit the leaching efficiency. Results for the thiourea leaching of a bulk sulfide concentrate and a residue from the autoclave leaching of a smelter flue dust are also reported. As determined by a standard bottle roll cyanidation test, the bulk concentrate was extremely resistive to cyanide leaching yielding only 16% gold and 2% silver extraction in 24 hours. Leaching with a relatively concentrated thiourea solution (1MCS (NH2)2) resulted in 83% gold and 75% silver extraction in four hours. With the treated flue dust residue, gold extraction was about 60%. Gold and silver extraction with cyanide was sensitive to both cyanide concentration and oxidizing conditions. Cyanidation resulted in 59% gold extraction and 77% silver extraction in 24 hours.

The density and viscosity of 1iquid thallium have been measured by absolute methods to temperatures of about 200° and 150°C, respectively, above the melting point. These new data reported, especially density data, do not closely confirm previous work. Density p, in g per cu Cm, is shown to vary linearly with temperaluve t, in °C, according to the equation p = 11.658 - 1.439 X l0-3t. The viscosity data obey the well-known Andrade equation nv1/3 = A exp C/vT , the constants A and C for thallium having values of 2.19 x A and 79.648, respectively. This paper reports some new data for the density and viscosity .of liquid thallium. Measurements of these fundamental physical properties were undertaken as part of a continuing research program at the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa. Canada. A literature search has revealed that data are so scarce that there could not be a consensus on the true values of the density and viscosity of liquid thallium. To be more specific, there exists only one set of viscosity data' and only two acceptable sets of density data,273 one of which is limited in scope.3 In Liquid Metals Handbook,3 another density study is reported but indications of impurities in the thallium render the results suspect. In this situation, further careful experimentation was required to realize the true density and viscosity of thallium. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Density. Densities were determined using a graphite pycnometer. The technique and its accuracy have been discussed in earlier papers.4'5 It is considered that experimental data can be obtained which are accurate within +0.05 pct, all sources of random and systematic errors having been evaluated. Density results for thallium were identical whether measured under an atmosphere of argon or a vacuum of 5 x 10-6 torr and, for the most part, the argon atmosphere was used. Viscosity. Viscosity measurements were made in an oscillational viscosimeter by an absolute method—the liquid metal being held in a closed graphite cylinder. Design and operation of the apparatus, constructed in this laboratory, have previously been discussed.6 For thallium, runs were made under a vacuum of about 2 x 10-6 torr. To evaluate viscosity coefficients from the various experimental parameters, the mathematical analysis of Roscoe7 was used. Measurements of the necessary parameters and the accuracy of these measurements have also been discussed.6 The cylinder dimensions were corrected for the anisotropic expansion of graphite, as discussed for density measurements.4,5 It is well-known that thallium oxidizes rapidly and hence a newly machined surface quickly tarnishes in air. The oxide film, however. is nonadherent and is easily removed by rubbing or by solution in water. Hence, immediately before use, both density and viscosity charges were immersed in water, wiped dry, and quickly transferred to the apparatus which was then rapidly evacuated. Specimens removed after determinations were only slightly tarnished and there was no other evidence that tarnishing affected the results. For example, the sharpness of the specimen edges from the containing vessels indicated complete filling by the liquid metal. Thallium of 99.999 pct purity was used in this investigation. Because of its high toxicity care was exercised in handling this material. For example, the melting procedure to prepare machinable ingots was carried out in an open, well-ventilated area, while protective gloves were always worn when handling the solid metal. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Density. Measurements were made over a tempera-ture range of about 200°C above the melting point. The results are listed in Table I and plotted in Fig. 1. From the graph it is evident that the relation between density and temperature is linear. Such a relation has been observed before in this program for other metals and alloys475 and elsewhere by other workers. A least-squares analysis of experimental data gives the equation: pT1 = 11.658 - 1.439 x 10-3t where p = density in g per cu cm and t = temperature in "C. In Fig. 1, together with the present results, the data of Schneider and Heymer2 in the corresponding temperature range have also been plotted. Evidently, the two sets of data do not agree well, the results of Schneider and Heymer being about 0.6 pct higher. Viscosity. Viscosity data were obtained from the melting point, 303.5°C, up to 457.5"C. The data are listed in Table I and in Fig. 2 the plot of these results demonstrates a smooth curvilinear relation between

THE purpose of this paper is a comparison, based on genesis, of the ore deposits associated with the igneous rocks of the central Montana Rockies. Considered separately, without attention to their origin, the orebodies appear to be distributed haphazard, with no fundamental laws controlling their position and character. It is believed, however, that if all the factors be weighed, this apparent confusion will to a large degree disappear. The, first essential to such a comparison is detailed knowledge of the individual mines, as to their geographic position (see Fig. 1), their mineralogical character, and in particular the derivation of their ores.1 The authors of this paper have pursued such an investigation for the past 6 years, and have accumulated a mass of evidence that enables a preliminary correlation to be attempted.
