The rate of precipitation of ferric iron as ammonium jarosite, NH4.Fe3(SO4)2(0H)6 from acidic solutions near 100¦C, was found to increase with weight of jarosite seed crystals, and with concentration of ammonium ion, but to decrease with increasing acidity. The particle size of the product crystals was larger at low sulphate concentrations and at high ammonium concentrations. The adsorption mechanism of three different O,OÆ-di-alkyl-dithiophosphate (dtp) collectors, K[S2P(OR)2] with R = Et, i-Bu and i-Amyl, on the surface of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) was studied by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The morphology changes on the conditioned Cu2S surfaces, in the collector concentration range 0.1 - 10 mM, were also monitored with scanning electron microscope (SEM). In order to assign Cu(I)-dtp species on the surface of Cu2S, the corresponding bulk Cu(I)-dtp compounds, which are clusters of the monovalent copper containing either Cu6(antiprismatic) or Cu8(cubic) cores, were synthesised, and characterised by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS and static 65Cu NMR. Further investigations on the crystal habits of the bulk systems were carried out by powder x-ray diffraction and SEM. A comparative analysis of the 31P chemical shift and chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) data estimated from the experimental NMR spectra of the polycrystalline bulk Cu(I) dialkyldithiophosphate complexes was used for assigning the 31P resonance lines in the NMR spectra of the collector treated Cu2S powder samples. The species formed on the synthetic Cu2S surfaces were assigned to polycrystalline phases of: Cu6L6 with L = Et2dtpû, Cu6L6 and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Bu2dtpû, and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Amyl2dtpû. A heterophase autocatalytic step process of both formation and growth of solid CuxLy (L = R2dtp, x = 6 or 8 and y = 6) complexes on the collector treated Cu2S surface is proposed. A possible role of the oxidised form of dithiophosphate collectors, bis[di-alkyl-thiophosphoryl]-disulfane (disulfide), is discussed in terms of a specific self-redox reaction. The second order quadrupolar lineshapes in 65Cu NMR spectra were simulated and the interaction parameters, CQ and hQ, for the bulk dialkyldithiophosphato-copper(I) complexes were obtained.

Fracture zones are commonly found in the Earth’s crust. These zones may cause very severe engineering problems. Therefore, the formation and the assessment of the mechanical characteristics of these zones is of great concern for rock engineers. A new double shearing jig was used to study the formation of shear zones in rock under static and impact loading conditions using the device developed by the authors. A series of experiments were undertaken to investigate formation on the formation and characteristics of fracture zones in laboratory. Although actual fracture zones are more complicated, various tests give some insight view of the formation of fracture zones as well as some information on their mechanical behaviour under both dynamic conditions and static conditions. The authors report the outcomes of these experiments and discuss their implications in practice.

The major incentives for developing continuous processes for the production of formcoke are to achieve a wider range of coals which can be used, greater operating flexibility enabling the production of various coke qualities, and environmental improvements. The characteristics of a formcoke which must be considered when assessing its performance in the blast furnace are compressive strength, abrasion resistance, volatile matter, reac- tivity, porosity, density, size, shape, ash yield and sulphur content. Lurgi's development work in attempting to pro- duce a formcoke which meets the specified requirements has resulted in most current efforts being concentrated on the Bergbauforschung/Lurgi hot briquetting process. This process blends hot char produced from a non-caking coal with small quantities of caking coal in a special mixer in the plastic range of the caking coal. The material is subsequently briquetted hot, then subjected to a thermal after-treatment to produce a strong abrasion resistant formcoke. A 650 tonne per day plant for British Steel Corporation is now under construction. A study of the equipment requirements and the operating costs indicate that the economics of large scale formcoke plants compare favourably with those of conventional coke-making plants.

This study uses the Q Method to examine how those living in former metal mining landscapes value this heritage and their preferences for the long-term management of mine waste. Such sites are often perceived as derelict or degraded, and of very little value. It is therefore assumed that their reuse, for example for development or recovery of metals, is likely to be beneficial. There are around 5,000 former metal mines in England and Wales, many of which are protected for their ecological, geological or cultural value. The Q Method is particularly suitable for issues where there is no consensus of opinion. We asked 38 residents of six mining areas in England and Wales to ‘sort’ a series of statements based on their resonance with the resident’s perspective; this is the Q sort. The statements covered a range of opinions of the mining legacy, its value and options for its management with a particular focus on the potential for metal recovery from the wastes. Analysis of the Q sorts revealed five perspectives on the mining heritage. All placed a high value on the cultural and ecological value of this heritage, however, they differed in their priorities for long-term management. For example, emphasis was placed on either nature conservation, cultural heritage, water quality or the opportunity for job creation through reworking the mines. Cutting across these themes there were also differing perspectives on the role of experts and local people in shaping the future management of the wastes. This research suggests that the views of local people are nuanced; they value their mining heritage but opinion is split on the most effective way to manage these sites especially where there is an impact on water quality.CITATION:Sinnett, D E and Sardo, A M, 2018. The paper provides an overview of the development and content of APCOM symposia since their inception in 1961. This development is set within the context of the academic environment in which much of the research published at APCOM symposia is conducted. This environment includes rigorous external assessment of research quality at national levels and against international benchmarks, which carries significant consequences for funding and for the continued existence of the academic minerals industry disciplines. Adverse consequences that undermine the academic provision of mining and resource engineering will impact negatively on the minerals industry by reducing the level of research and education resources available to it.The traditional reductionist approach to research is contrasted with the inter-disciplinary approach that is required to address the complex systems problems that the minerals industry will have to address to ensure its technical, economical and environmental sustainability. Such an approach offers a means of raising research profiles, of establishing mutually beneficial academic-industry engagement and provides an opportunity for APCOM to take a lead role in identifying the research and development agenda for the future

The purpose of this paper is to outline the basic policy problems for good community relations programmes in the resource extraction industries of Papua New Guinea. The main focus of the paper will be on defining and analysing those problems which lie on the landowner side and which are still not widely understood within the resource extraction industries despite several decades of turbulent experience. Many of the companies operating in the resource extraction industries of mining and petroleum and gas have in recent decades adopted, by choice or necessity, 'good corporate citizen' policies. Some of these companies now pursue ethical business, environmental and community relations policies. Some have adequately funded and well-trained staff in their community relations departments. Although different industry sites scattered over Papua New Guinea show significant differences in their experience of social conflict, I argue here that a good deal of this variation has less to do with the differences between the companies' public relations policies and their effectiveness and more to do with the conflict causing features of indigenous society. Experience suggests that even a company well-equipped with good intentions, good policies and good staff may experience serious difficulties in maintaining good community relations in Papua New Guinea. Many of these difficulties, I argue, can be traced to causes that lie, essentially, within the structure of Papua New Guinean communities and in the customs and social relations of Papua New Guinean peoples. Accordingly the attention of this paper is focussed on the conflict causing aspects of Papua New Guinean society. It is true, to the point of being a cliche, that Papua New Guinean societies are oriented very strongly towards achieving consensus and social harmony. In this regard Papua New Guinean communities differ significantly from, say, Australian communities. My purpose here is not to denigrate this aspect of Papua New Guinean societies but, rather, to point out that the drive for consensus is driven by the desire to avoid its opposite, dissensus. This paper sets out to define the dissensual aspects of Papua New Guinean societies and my special interest is in those conflict producing aspects of Papua New Guinean societies that are most resistant to the mechanisms that are designed to create social harmony. A survey of the recent history of industry and community relations in Papua New Guinea indicates that there are three main factors present on the landowner side which are liable, separately or through their interaction, to cause difficulties. These factors are respectively generational challenge, social boundaries and custom variability and I shall discuss each of these in turn.

Increasingly, consideration is being given to the nominal `outcomes' of degree courses in engineering, including mining engineering. These are concerned not only with knowledge and technical understanding but also with capabilities in the professional application of engineering principles to problem solving, multi-disciplinary teamwork, communication and life-long learning. This paper discusses concepts of education, professional formation and training and the associated development of competencies in applying knowledge, understanding and technical insights and skills to new situations. In developing guidelines on preferred attributes and competencies in graduate mining engineers, a survey was conducted of a range of industry personnel involved in selecting graduate mining engineers. The results not only clarified the spectrum of competencies sought but also provided valuable detailed views to assist in defining a mining engineering curriculum. Considering a greater concern with the development of more `well-rounded' graduates, the implications are discussed with regard to teaching and assessment activities and the time demands on academic staff when a `coaching' role is emphasised. In line with international and Australian moves in engineering education, notions on education of mining engineering graduates in Australia are under review. The results will provide continuing challenges to all involved.

I began my interest in sample preparation when I joined the Institute of Nuclear Sciences in 1962. I worked in the fields of rock dating and stable isotope geochemistry. Preparing a sample could take several days and the analysis took another day or more, so great care was taken with each sample. In 1968 I changed to mineral exploration analysis and was surprised to find that there was much less care in how a sample was taken and prepared. Virtually every sample was processed in the same way. In the use of ring and puck mills, Australia and New Zealand were among the world leaders. It took another ten years before labs in North America changed over from disc mills. In 1975, my partner and I divided our business into two parts. He took the laboratory into his consulting laboratory business and I took the small business that we had started, making ring and puck mills. For the next six years I was RocklabsÆs only employee. In the 1980s and 1990s, sampling specialists like Francis Pitard and Dominique Francois-Bongarcon began to make a difference in the understanding of what constitutes good sampling and preparation practice. They and others took courses on the new concepts of Sampling Theory, as developed by Pierre Gy. The desire for better procedures lead to the development of new machines, including the big bowl pulverisers from Australia, jaw crushers that could crush finely like our Boyd Crusher, rotating dividers of new designs and flow-through ring and puck mills. Other machines did not fare so well, including rolls crushers, cone crushers and hammer mills.

I am wearing two hats today. When the invitations went out to participate in this forum, two were received in the head office of the Department of Lands and Survey - one addressed to the Director-General of Lands and one to the Chairman of the National Parks Authority. It seemed logical that as the department is responsible to the Government for the administration of the National Parks Act 1952, we should respond by providing one speaker to cover both the department's interests and those of the National Parks Authority. I hope, however, that this will not blur the clear distinction which exists in the context of the mineral industry between Crown land on the one hand administered by the department for the statutory Land Settlement Board and national parks and allied reserves on the other hand which are the responsibility of the National Parks Authority.

The Fosterville Gold mine is located approximately 20km to the East of Bendigo in central Victoria. The gold at Fosterville occurs as solid solution within disseminated arsenopyrite and pyrite. The Fosterville ore bodies contain various amounts of native carbon in the form of bituminous coal. This carbon (Non-Carbonate Carbon or NCC) has been the predominant mechanism for gold loss from the processing facility through”preg-robbing”.Processing of the Fosterville ore is achieved initially through crushing, grinding and flotation to extract the sulphides. The sulphide concentrate is oxidized using Bacterial Oxidation, before being leached in a conventional CIL circuit. A high portion of the native carbon (NCC) in the mine ore is naturally hydrophobic in nature, and subsequently reports to the flotation concentrate stream, and ultimately onto the CIL circuit. This NCC has a notable preg-robbing ability. Treatment of Black Shale ores, which have elevated NCC levels, has historically resulted in CIL recoveries as low as 35%, with around 60-80% of the gold loss from the leach circuit attributed to preg-robbing.Standard technologies for dealing with a carbonaceous leach feed have been trialed with limited success. The discovery of the significance of heat on leach recoveries, triggered extensive testwork on a range of leach feed and tails samples. Pilot plant testing demonstrated that “Heated Leaching” of the CIL tails was the best process with an average recovery increase of 7.5% being achieved. Following a successful pilot study, an engineering feasibility study was completed by Minerva Engineering, and the project economics determined. With strong recovery gains evident and a predicted project payback of 1-1.5 years, approval for the installation of the full scale plant was granted. Detailed design commenced in September 2008 with installation commencing in January 2009. The circuit was successfully commissioned in April 2009.Following commissioning, the Heated Leach circuit has achieved recovery gains of 4-14%, and has proven itself to be a significant contributor to the overall plant performance.

Fosterville gold mine recently celebrated production of its one millionth ounce of gold based firmly within a history of refractory sulfide gold mining. Compared with other Victorian gold mines, the disseminated nature of the sulfide gold is a deposit style with low estimation variance combined with established processes to accurately delineate the controlling structures. The systems in place had been established and have worked effectively for the majority of the one million produced ounces.By the end of 2014, diamond drill campaigns targeting the lower Phoenix orebody at depths of 800 m below surface began showing a change to the nature of the gold within the deposit. Coarse visible gold within 0.5–2 m thick quartz carbonate veins were being intersected with regularity showing the emergence of a different zone of gold mineralisation.Data about the new and exciting discovery couldn’t be gathered fast enough, however, established systems and processes throughout the geology and processing departments were not developed to handle a coarse gold environment. Change would be commensurate with the size and scale of the discovery, and new learnings would need to be implemented quickly to keep in front of a mining schedule that was focused on producing tonnes due to the dropping grades of the sulfide ore.Gold assays being returned were showing that the gold nature was different to those of other Victorian deposits. Comparative to the highly nuggety nature of gold found in other Victorian goldfields, the fine grained gold accumulations were dispersed in relatively consistent narrow linear trends grading consistently into the hundreds of grams per tonne. New drill intersections were being returned by the day and research to find developed orebodies that had published information into how to handle such a rapid change yielded few examples.The challenge was to review and set new standards with regards to handling an orebody that transitioned the very nature of the gold being mined. This involved reviewing all steps in the estimation process including data capture and quality control and quality assurance through to mineral liberation through the mill. Difficulties also involved finding analogous orebodies that consisted of both free milling and refractory ores that were dealing with drill assays that were measured as percentages of gold.CITATION:Phillips, N, 2017. The global goal of Sustainable Development is not achievable without major changes in the way goods and services are delivered and material needs are satisfied, which requires tremendous innovation in the supply chains and life cycles in which minerals and energy processing take part. Values derived from minerals and metals processing need to be delivered with a fraction of current ecological impacts, which means removing technical obstacles to eliminating waste and emissions in the minerals cycle. The challenge is to find economically attractive ways to get there, through eco-efficiency gains in existing operations, capturing regional synergies, streamlining and greening the materials supply chain, and commercialising new process technology and new products. This paper summarises the outcomes of the Sustainable Resource Processing project, which was designed to provide a strategic analysis of what sustainability means for minerals and metals processing and how that can be effectively translated into technical and business innovation.

In the first half of 1987 two four metre diameter raise bore holes were drilled at the Olympic Dam Project for ventilation purposes. The first hole, 476 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 96 days, 35 days longer than scheduled. The second hole, 407 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 39 days, 2 days ahead of schedule. Both holes were drilled with a Robbins 121R rig using a Wirth head that consisted of 23 face cutters and 5 side cutters, supplied by a contractor. After the sites were located a grouting program was carried out to help seal off an aquifer between 160 and 180 m below the surface. Cavities discovered in the Andamooka Limestone were filled with concrete. Because of the overlying dune sands and clay both sites were pre-sunk to the competent Andamooka Limestone.

The four-dimensional (4D) network relaxation method, originally developed by Akaike in 1999, uses Lagrange relaxation and is known for its ability to include the price change and possible better outputs, but the computation time is huge. However, the continuous advancement in computer technologies allows the use of higher-speed computers with more memory capacity. Therefore, in this paper the authors have tried to implement the method with adjustments and improvements in its algorithm to suit the current computing system. As a result, the computation time has been drastically reduced and more constraints can be included, which makes the scheduling a more realistic one. The case study of an open pit gold mine with 129 500 blocks can be solved considering the capacity constraints in 71 seconds. In previous case studies, the mined ore had to be processed or disposed of immediately. Now, stockpiling can be included as another option. Since the details of the algorithm are still being improved, the computation time is a little longer than the previous cases without the stockpiling option. However, it is found that scheduling with the stockpiling option is possible in a reasonable time. In conclusion, the 4D network relaxation method has become more useful with advances in computer technologies and provides better results.

It is hypothesised that increasing the number of loading passes will produce a reduced range of truck payload outcomes compared with four-pass loading. The paper provides analysis to support this hypothesis. It is shown that, hypothetically, loading trucks with five or more passes will result in reduced tendency for overloading and reduced confidence interval for truck payloads that increase the confidence level of containing high end payloads within safe and commercially acceptable limits. Furthermore, increased number of passes provides for more precise bucket load spotting and so improves distribution of payloads within truck bodies. Truck-loading issues examined by the paper include: Improvement in life of driveline components and tyres. Generally tyre costs are relatively moderate; but tyres tend to become an increasingly sensitive performance/cost component as truck scale increases; Reduction of site severity fects flowing on to suspensions, truck frames and structural components generally with potential for reduced long-term repair costs; Less physical body damage due to smaller load increments; Reduced risk of non-compliance with payload limitations for safe braking standards; Increase in loading cycle times tend to increase with scale of loading machinery within the limits of a specific type of equipment (ie rope shovels or hydraulic shovels). Production increase with increased bucket capacity is, to a degree, offset by slower loading cycle times. This is particularly pronounced with front-end loaders but tends to be less noticeable with hydraulic excavators/shovels and electric rope shovels. Decrease in loading time, as a proportion of total truck-cycle time as open pits deepen and dump reaches increase. The production and cost benefits of four-pass loading tend to diminish as truck cycle times increase. The paper also discusses the implications for loading-equipment philosophy to satisfy the future needs of the industry. Cost benefits from upscaling tend to diminish as truck scale increases, so increasing management diligence and close monitoring are required to ensure that expected outcomes are realised. These truck-loading issues have been researched to assess the benefits positive or negative) of four-pass loading in practical scenarios. An attempt is made to determine whether four-pass loading is a æmust-haveÆ or merely a æmythÆ.

The recent rapid escalation in computer use by mining companies, particularly in technical applications, can in part be traced to a growth in the availability of specialist packaged software. Such software, often developed by independent software companies provides economies of scale, end user orien- tation and breadth of scope imposed by market forces. This paper reviews the emergence of these companies and current software econo- mics before extrapolating present trends to consider the effect of future fourth gen- eration languages upon productivity.

Most people are familiar with Euclidean dimensions: zero for a point; one for a line; two for a plane; and three for a volume. Howeverbobjects are not actually Euclidean, but lie somewhere between Euclidean æend-membersÆ with a non-integer fractal (or æfractionalÆ) dimension. The fractal dimension D is a measure of the relative importance of large versus small. Consider the trace of a coastline on a map. It has a fractal dimension (1 =D =2) somewhere between a line (dimension = 1) and a plane (dimension = 2). The more tortuous the coastline, the higher the fractal dimension, and the closer it becomes towards a plane. The concepts of fractals and spatial geometry can be applied to a wide range of geologicaVmining problems as well as than those dealing with space. One commonly quoted fractal relation is the log-log relationship of ore-grade and tonnage. Until recently, we have never been able to define or measure spatial-geometry, but new developments in mathematics have provided a means by which to quantity and apply it to our problems.
