Economic evaluations of mineral projects are based on discounted cash flow analyses, followed by sensitivity and risk analyses. However, the global macroeconomic and political environment in which the mineral industries operate have a profound effect on the viability of individual projects. Since the oil crises of 1974 and 1980, demand patterns for minerals have become much more variable and prices more volatile. Significant changes in the geographical distribution of world mineral supply and demand are underway, and the mix of minerals used is also changing. Social and political factors are as important as economic and technical factors in determining the viability of mineral ventures. Economic evaluation of mineral projects have to be undertaken in a more uncertain and risky environment. They can no longer be reduced to a number crunching exercise.

Sensitive and tolerant species of macroinvertebrates were present across a wide range of conductivity concentrations in the Isaac River catchment in Central Queensland, indicating the need for further ecological studies in the field to underpin the development of regionally-tailored guidelines for conductivity. The Isaac catchment has naturally high conductivity, but there is also increasing pressure on resource companies to ameliorate saline mine water discharge. Recently, catchment management efforts have included a revision of the water quality guidelines that are specific for the broader Fitzroy catchment. These guidelines include the use of macroinvertebrates as indicators of ecosystem health, but developing and applying such guidelines first requires a good understanding of macroinvertebrate ecology and population dynamics, ideally from field validation. To date, studies of macroinvertebrate tolerance to conductivity in southern freshwaters, as well as in laboratory-based ecotoxicological tests conducted in Queensland, have suggested that ranges exceeding 1000 ¦S/cm are likely to have negative impacts on survivorship of all taxa. However, these results may not be transferable to natural populations of macroinvertebrates from the Isaac, where the naturally high-conductivity water may allow the opportunity for adaptation. To test this, macroinvertebrate assemblages were examined at a series of sites in the upper Isaac River catchment at the end of the dry season in 2012. Patterns in the assemblages were examined together with water quality parameters, in order to gauge the ability of macroinvertebrates to survive at conductivity concentrations exceeding 1000 ¦S/cm. The specific conductance of the field sites ranged from 477 ¦S/cm to 9791 ¦S/cm and a total of 39 families from 13 orders were identified. Species richness was not significantly different between sites of differing conductivity. Macroinvertebrate populations were dominated by Dipterans as well as the traditionally more pollution-sensitive families Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera. There was an absence of any correlation between conductivity and species richness (P > 0.050), suggesting that macroinvertebrate taxa richness occurs independently of conductivity, at least in this particular cohort of mining and/or grazing influenced ephemeral systems in Central Queensland.CITATION:Stitz, L, Fabbro, L D and Kinnear, S, 2013. Maghemite - A Source of Heavy Medium for Coal Washeries Use of magnetite as heavy medium in coal preparation plants has been increasing steadily in recent years. It might be in short supply in some areas or excessively costly in certain times. In Turkey, the cost of heavy medium magnetite has almost tripled since 2003. As a result, alternative sources of heavy medium material have been evaluated. A maghemite ore from Elbistan-Kahramanmaras was found to be an interesting source. Tests showed that the maghemite ore can be enriched via magnetic separation at 1556 gauss to obtain a heavy medium material with 4.93 g/cm3 density and 97.22 per cent magnetic recovery. Further tests were conducted to determine the optimum field strength for magnetic separation, friability and regeneration recovery.

The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addition to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

Polymetallic hydrothermal veins of the Western Cascades are hosted in propylitically altered Tertiary volcanics of calc-alkaline affinity and (or) in nearby, altered, and compositionally similar plutons. Ores from shallow and now abandoned mines produced mostly gold and were considered to be of epithermal origin. However, recent discovery of breccia and porphyry types of Cu-Mo mineralisation and other data suggest that the deposits of this terrane vary systematically both regionally, south to north, and locally, high to low altitudes. The evidence includes changes in (1) size, composition, and complexity of plutons, (2) types of mineral deposits; (3) assemblages of alteration and ore minerals; (4) trace metal geochemistry of host rocks; and (5) fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope data. They collectively imply a consanguineous origin of vein, breccia, and disseminated-veinlet types of mineralisation by magmatic hydrothermal processes.

Magnesite-rich and dolomite-rich ores from the Savage River region of Tasmania are being considered as potential feed material for a commercial process for production of magnesia.Two selected samples have been characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis. The materials differ in calcination behaviour, with magnesite decomposing at a significantly lower temperature than dolomite. Calcination conditions have a marked effect on the rate and percentage of magnesium dissolved as the bicarbonate when slurries of the calcine are leached with carbon dioxide. From a process point of view, the feed should have the highest possible magnesite/dolomite ratio, while the optimum calcination conditions are determined by the behaviour of the magnesite component of the feed.From batch calcination tests, it is apparent that the optimum calcination conditions for magnesite-rich ore are a temperature in the vicinity of 700°C and a calcination time of one hour.

Examination of Ihe calcination and carbonic acid leaching behaviour of a number of Australian magnesites shows that there are substantial differences between the massively crystalline and the cryptocrystalline forms of magnesites. Crude magnesias formed by calcination of the massive variety of magnesite have considerably smaller surface area and show lower rates of reaction with carbonic acid when compared With those derived from cryptocrystalline magnesites. In order lO producc a rcactivc magncsia from massive magnesite, the calcination conditions must be carefully controlled over a narrow temperature range (eg 680-720°C). For the cryptocrystalline calcines, the temperature of formation has little effect on reactivity.The results confirm the general applicability of the calcination/carbonic acid leach process for producing magnesia from magnesitc. If a mixed crystalline/cryplocrystalline feed is to be processed, then processing conditions must be optimized in terms of the behaviour of the crystalline component of the feed.

Calcination of samples from the Savage River region of Thsmania containing varying magnesite/dolomite ratios under conditions optimized for the magnesite component, followed by carbonic acid leaching at elevated pressures, leads to leachates of varying composition. For a 3 per cent solids slurry leached at 15.5°C and 700 k Pa carbon dioxide, the leachates have magnesium concentrations in the range 0.71 - 13.2 g/litre. The corresponding magnesium extraction data are 12.5 - 86.4 per cent. The variation in leachate composition would be unacceptable in terms of continuous processing, so that a feed of "constant" composition is essential. Selective mining and physical beneficiation to remove the bulk of the dolomite do not appear to be practical. It is concluded that the most appropriate method of feed preparation is to carry out extensive blending of the magnesite/dolomite ore and the resultant calcine.

Tests show how that temperature and rate of sparging to remove carbon dioxide determine the rate of precipitation and the chemical and physical properties of hydrated magnesium carbonates precipitated from clarified magnesium bicarbonate liquors derived from crude magnesia. At temperatures above 55°C the product is largely in the form ofhydromagnesite, Mg5(C03)4(OH)2.4H2O Between I5°C and 55°C the major product is nesquehonite, MgCO3·3H2O, although partial hydromagnesite precipitation can be induced by a high rate of aeration.As a result of the reduced time required to bring about greater than 95 per cent magnesium precipitation, the higher MgO content of the product, the ease of product recovery from the precipitation vessel, and the lower energy requirement for thermal decomposition of the precipitate to magnesia, it is preferable to precipitate hydromagnesite rather than nesquehonite. Moreover, the magnesia produced from hydromagnesite is somewhat more reactive than that formed from nesquehonite.Using precipitate calcination temperatures less than 1000°C, the chemical reactivities of the magnesias formed from both precipitates are greater than those of the crude magnesias derived from Savage River magnesite itself. The magnesias would be suitable for most uses developed for caustic-calcined magnesia. However, for refractory brick manufacture, it would be necessary to briquelle the caustic-calcined magnesia. adjust the CaO and SiO2 contents and sinter at temperatures in excess of 1600°C. This would bring about an increase in the bulk density and induce the appropriate chemical bonding reactions.Dead-burned magnesia produced from Savage River magnesite by the calcination/carbon dioxide route would have very low B2O3 contents, typically less than 0.0001 per cent.

Carbonic acid leaching of crude iron-containing magnesia derived from Savage River magnesite yields a magnesium bicarbonate leachate with a substantial soluble iron concentration. The iron concentration depends upon the leaching conditions (particularly time, temperature and pulp density) but is generally in the range 0.005-0.5 g/litre. If this soluble iron is not removed prior to the precipitation of the magnesium as a hydrated carbonate, then this product will be contaminated by the iron, and will not yield a final product (high-purity magnesia) that meets specifications.The soluble iron content of the magnesium bicarbonate leachate can be reduced to an acceptable level by addition of solid aluminium sulphate either during carbonic acid, leaching of the crude calcine or to the clarified leachate. Chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction revealed that the iron is precipitated as an iron-containing hydrotalcite-type compound, [Mg6(Al,Fe)2(OH)16]CO3.4H2O. The actual composition of the precipitate depends on the amount of aluminium sulphate added and the precipitation technique used. Because precipitation of iron in this manner also results in reduced magnesium recovery from the leachates, It WIll be necessary to develop methods for recovering the magnesium component of the precipitates.

A detailed examination of carbonic acid leaching of crude iron-containing magnesia derived from Savage River magnesite shows that the rate and extent of magnesium and iron dissolution are affected by the slake time, leaching temperature, carbon dioxide pressure, pulp density and rate of agitation. In order to produce high-purity magnesia from the leachate by precipitation and calcination, the optimum leaching conditions, which are those that yield maximum magnesium and minimum iron dissolution, have to be a compromise in terms of the above parameters. For example, iron dissolution can be limited by leaching at an elevated temperature (-45°C), but because the maximum concentration of magnesium biearbonate decreases rapidly with an increase in temperature, it is necessary to use a low pulp density (-2 per cent solids) in order to achieve an acceptable degree of magnesium dissolution.Evidence is obtained that iron dissolution involves the formation of a soluble ferric bicarbonate complex that decomposes at elevated temperatures. The extent of iron dissolution is much higher than might be expected and it is probably because the original magnesite contains siderite in solid solution with the magnesite; on calcination, the hematite whieh is formed is in a very finely divided condition and hence more reactive.

Quay Magnesium Limited (QMG) listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in late September 2004 having raised approximately A$30 million with the object of designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a 15 000 tpa magnesium alloy production facility in Nanjing, China. Site construction commenced in February 2005, with installation of all major components completed by the end of October 2005. Hot commissioning was simultaneously commenced with the final stages of installation, leading to the first stage of continuous ingot casting by mid November 2005. Since that time, ramp-up to the name plate capacity has been undertaken. This presentation highlights some of the more significant technical and logistical hurdles that have had to be overcome in order to meet the high quality product specifications required by a range of QMG customers.

Collaboration between CSIRO Minerals and SunSalt Pty Ltd, a salt producing company located in rural Victoria, has resulted in a commercial process to recover magnesium sulfate (commonly called Epsom salt) from the saline waters of the Murray Basin. The feed for this process is bittern; the liquor remaining after halite (common salt) has been harvested from the saline water by evaporation.SunSalt produces salt and bitterns from three locations, namely Hattah (Victoria), Mourquong (NSW) and Wakool (NSW). The small size and considerable distances between these operations makes it uneconomic to build a stationary processing plant to extract value-added products, in particular Epsom salt, from the bitterns of the three operations. This fact led SunSalt to build a containerised mobile plant that could be moved to each site to process the bitterns at the end of the salt harvesting period.Epsom salt is extracted from the bittern by further evaporation, refrigeration and recrystallisation. In this process the bittern is diluted with five per cent volume of fresh water to minimise precipitation of residual halite in the bittern. Cooling the diluted bittern to between -5 and -10¦C precipitates up to 70 per cent of the magnesium sulfate, which is recovered as 85 to 96 per cent purity Epsom salt by filtration. This product is marketed as an industrial grade Epsom salt. Higher purity (up to 99.9 per cent) Epsom salt (USP or BP grade refined product) is made from the industrial grade product (raw Epsom salt) by recrystallisation.The containerised mobile plant was commissioned in December 2002. The raw Epsom salt generated in the mobile plant is refined to a higher purity Epsom salt in a separate plant located in Mildura. The Mildura plant was commissioned in December 2003.The CSIRO-SunSalt collaboration has demonstrated that the saline waters can be processed into a useful resource, and in addition could create jobs and a new skill base in regional Australia. The production of Epsom salt locally in Australia, which is worth currently about $A600 per tonne, removes the need to import over 3000 tpa from overseas with a net positive impact of $A2 million on the balance of trade.

Tin mineralisation occurs at Renison Bell, near Zeehan in Tasmania, as a group of cassiterite-bearing massive pyrrhotite bodies in Cambrian sedimentary rocks. Mineralising fluids from the underlying Pine Hill Granite have replaced carbonate rocks with massive sulphides and cassiterite. The discrete blocks of massive pyrrhotite have high density and high magnetic susceptibility contrasts with the comparatively barren country rock. They are strongly remanently magnetised and are excellent geophysical targets. A detailed geophysical model of the mine was created from a database comprising 1:2500 scale geological mapping and geological logs of approximately 4000 drill-cores. The model comprises 93 parallel cross-sections, each 1.5 km long, spaced 20 m apart. Each cross-section is comprised of up to 150 polygons which represent all known individual rock types and orebodies. The magnetic response of the model was computed and the residual between the model and the observed response, measured by a low-level helicopter magnetic survey, revealed several anomalies unaccounted for by the model. Drill testing of these anomalies led to the discovery of several hitherto unknown massive sulphide occurrences. Surface gravity data of the mine and surrounding district were enhanced by applying digital terrain corrections. The corrected Bouguer anomaly revealed a hitherto unknown positive anomaly associated with the ore zones of the Renison mine. The gravity anomaly of the model was also computed. Unfortunately, the limited resolution of the observed data prevented the delineation of ore targets. The terrain-corrected Bouguer gravity data were also used to model the shape of the underlying non-magnetic Pine Hill Granite. A computer inversion method was implemented to build a 3D block model of the granite. Results agreed with previous conventional 3D modelling techniques but yielded improved resolution of the granite form. The project involved development of new computer software to build and edit the large and complex 3D geophysical model of the mine and to compute the model's magnetic and gravity responses. Software was also developed to build and compute the gravity response of a 3D block model of the underlying granite.

Low-level aeromagnetic data available in digital form have been combined to produce a new 1:100 000 scale map of total force anomalies of the Coromandel region, New Zealand. The map incorporates data from 13 surveys flown between 1977 and 1990 and shows the regional magnetic pattern as well as more detailed localised anomalies. In addition to magnetic anomalies, the map also depicts data to aid interpretation, including small-scale maps of topography, geology, magnetic intensity gradient and apparent magnetisation. The primary magnetic anomalies of the Coromandel region are associated with Late Miocene and Pliocene volcanic rocks, but have been locally modified by intense hydrothermal alteration caused by geothermal activity. Epithermal gold-silver and porphyry copper deposits are associated with zones of hydrothermal alteration. The map of magnetic anomalies can be used as an aid to mineral exploration and the interpretation of the processes that control the distribution of mineral deposits in the region.

During periods of high metal prices and strong metal demand tailings retreatment can be economic. Most tailings retreatment operations are technically challenging, low margin operations, because the easily recovered mineral has already been removed, therefore, process improvements can potentially yield large economic benefits. The Hellyer tailings dam was owned by Intec Ltd and contained 10.9 million tonnes grading 2.8 per cent zinc, 3.0 per cent lead, 88 g/t of silver, 0.16 per cent copper and 2.6 g/t gold. In November 2006 the Polymetals Group, as operator, restarted the Hellyer plant to retreat these tailings. Within a few months the operation had stabilised and Polymetals was meeting budgeted targets of throughput, metal recovery and concentrate quality. Polymetals and Intec then investigated methods that would improve the metallurgical result for this difficult to treat tailings. Since the tailings are fine-grained with 80 per cent <45 ¦m, magnetic aggregation of the paramagnetic sphalerite was evaluated. Magnetic aggregation of an oxidised tailings feed has not been tested before, nor had the technology been available when Hellyer ore was originally processed. Extensive statistical test work showed magnetic aggregation of the sphalerite fines in the zinc cleaner circuit increased total zinc recovery. The increase in the mean zinc recovery with magnetic conditioning was 3.63 per cent, at a statistical level of confidence of 97.8 per cent, and at the same mean zinc concentrate grade.

Plant tests of magnetic conditioning have shown increased flotation recovery of paramagnetic sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pentlandite) in the -38 ¦m size fraction within rougher and cleaner flotation circuits. A statistical plant test was undertaken in the Mount Isa zinc flotation circuit where magnetic conditioning was tested simultaneously in both the rougher circuit and the cleaner retreat circuit (cleaner scavenger). This test resulted in a normalised increase of 1.60 per cent in the rougher circuit zinc recovery and simultaneously a normalised increase of 4.60 per cent in the cleaner retreat circuit zinc recovery - to a very high level of statistical confidence. Interestingly, in a novel approach, it was possible to verify the plant test results in two ways. Firstly, detailed MLA analysis of the tails confirmed the statistical plant test results and showed that the greatest effect of magnetic conditioning was on the sphalerite in the C3 - C6 size fraction, where there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in zinc in tails. Moreover, there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in liberated sphalerite across all -38 ¦m size fractions, but only a seven per cent reduction in non-liberated sphalerite in the tails. Secondly, plant modelling showed that increasing the rougher zinc recovery would cause an increase in zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit. The increase in the zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit with magnetic conditioning was demonstrated to a very high level of statistical confidence.CITATION:Gurnett, I, Voigt, P, Lumsden, B and Lines, P, 2012. Magnetic methods have for a long time been used in the search for iron ore. In fact the first recorded geophysical prospecting was the use of a magnetic compass to locate iron ore in the Kuruna region in Sweden as early as 1640.The largest magnetic anomaly discovered, about 700,000 gamma-s, is in this region.The enormous deposits in Russia in the Kursk region, where the ore consists largely of magnetite, were discovered by magnetic methods. Heiland estimates the proved reserves at 290,000 million tons and the additional potential deposits at twice this amount.These magnetite ores Show extremely high magnetic anomalies and consequently very insensitive instruments could be used to survey them. The first aerial magnetic surveys were carried out in this area in 1928.Large areas of the iron ore producing regions in Norway, Sweden and the United States have been covered by magnetic surveys in the past 30 years, much of the work being started after the first World War.In every major iron ore producing country, except Australia, extensive magnetic surveys have been, or are, carried out with the purpose of extending the reserves of ore. Australia is indeed fortunate that the depletion of iron ore reserves and the location of new deposits has not become an urgent problem. Nevertheless, some minor reconnaissance work has already been carried out in Australia, and the Commonwealth Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics is contemplating a more extended aerial magnetometer survey in the Middleback Ranges area.
