Consideration of the Establishment o£ a Central Testing or Proving Station.HISTORICAL.Since the introduction of improved high air pressure drilling machines in the early part of the century, efforts have been made to develop the quality of the rock drill bit, in order to take advantage of the greater increase of power output per unit weight of the machines (1). This resulted in the change from solid to hollow steel in the second decade of the present century (2).As the greatest sufferers from the dread disease of silicosis (3), it seemed appropriate that the South African gold mines should be the first to use hollow drill steel. Since then solid drills have become practically obsolete for mining purposes.Water is used with hollow steel drills not only to keep the cutting end cool, but also to assist in preventing the formation of undue dust during drilling. It is of interest to note, however, that water fed through hollow steel or sprayed into the air is only partially effective in removing fine dust particles a few microns in diameter, which particles are said to be the most potent in producing silicosis (3a).So far as the composition of "straight" carbon steel drills is concerned, a commission appointed by the Johannesburg mines carried out a very exhaustive series of tests on drill steels.These drills were manufactured from steel made by all the standard methods, including Swedish, Bessemer, crucible, openhearth, and, to a limited extent, electric furnace steel. It should be remembered that the commissioners' report was issued in 1913, when hollow drill steel had not yet been introduced. Only solid steel drills were then in use.

Semi-bulk concentrates of 45% zinc at 80% recovery have been produced from the McArthur River mineral deposit. Selective leaching of these concentrates to recover lead and a commercial grade zinc concentrate has the potential to increase significantly the recovery of zinc (as zinc concentrate) and lead (as lead metal) over conventional flotation methods producing lead and zinc concentrates.

A brief descri;tioki is given of nuclear power reactors and their fuels. These fuels are made from a variety of uranium compounds such as uranium dioxide, and uranium carbide as well as uranium metal and its alloys. The various processes used to produce some of these compounds from yellow cake are outlined. Using the natural uranium, heavy water reactor by way of illustration, fabrication of fuel elements is dis- cussed and the characteristics of U02 powder required for this partic- ular fabrication are indicated. The flowsheets and equipment presently in use overseas for production of this type of U02 powder are described. Possible areas where improvements might be made to this conventional process are enumerated and some details are then given of the programme of work which has commenced at the A.A.E.C. Research Establishment to gain experience in the general field of nuclear grade UO20

The current and future requirements for an underground mine information management system are being met with a flexible, value-engineered approach to mine information/communication infrastructures. El-Equip has developed and delivered to over fifty mines around the world an integrated, high capacity, radio-based leaky feeder communication system called MultiCOM. To meet the requirements of recently developed advanced information management technologies, such as production and ventilation management, the system has evolved to support simultaneous mobile and fixed information delivery services over an integrated single cable system. The following paper will review how MultiCOM is enabling information/communications technology to cost-effectively implement mine monitoring and control applications. Applications described in this paper include mobile vehicle production tracking, vehicle location, ventilation system monitoring and control with integrated ventilation system simulation. The techniques described are leading the world in terms of flexible and value-engineered applications of technology in the underground mine.

Tongkuangyu Copper Mine is currently the only mine in China employing block caving. It comprises two large orebodies known as the No 4 orebody and the No 5 orebody. They are approximately 50° in dip angle, 80 to 240 m in width and 800–1000 m in strike length. The two orebodies are separated by a distance of 110–130 m. Production with block caving originally, ie Phase 1 project started at Tongkuangyu from the first undercut at a depth of 200–300 m below the ground surface and designated as Lift 810 m in late 1989 and has continued to the present. During the last 25 years Tongkuangyu has mined three lifts: Lifts 810 m, 690 m and 530 m. The previous two lifts utilised a slusher process with an annual designed production rate of 4 Mt. In this context the lift name represents the elevation of track haul level.The Tongkuangyu Phase 2 project serves for two lifts (ie Lift 530 m and 410 m) under the elevation of 690 m and the annual designed production rate is 6 Mt. Since the orebody is approximately 50° in dip angle, it is originally designed that production at Lift 530 m is comprised of one main extraction level and two auxiliary extraction levels in the footwall and undercutting is started from one end of the extraction footprint forward to another end, which is from north-east to south-west.Production at Lift 530 m started from March 2011 and reached to 6.39 Mt in 2013 and 6.9 Mt in 2014. Additionally, Tongkuangyu improved block caving processes and used modern mining equipment, which differ from the previous two lifts. Blastholes for undercutting and drawbell-preparation are now drilled using jumbos. The blasted ore is transferred to the underground crushing station via 10 t electric load-haul-dumps (LHDs) and then delivered to surface via a belt conveyor 3200 m long.Due to increasing ground pressure, a consequence of mining depth increase, stress abutment and inadequate support, significant damage occurred at the Tongkuangyu Copper Mine with production at Lift 530 m. This resulted in significant production delays and rehabilitation costs. A series of improvements have since been implemented including an advanced undercut sequence and increased ground support. All of these improvements have allowed Tongkuangyu to alleviate ground control issues, reduce operating costs and ensure safe production.CITATION:Liu, Y M and Bian, K W, 2016. The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 5.1 million tonnes of copper ore and 2.2 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore from sublevel open stopes annually. Extraction of the narrow, steeply dipping silver-lead-zinc orebodies requires a strategy quite different to that used in the massive copper orebodies. A range of blasthole diameters, explosive types and initiation systems gives the flexibility needed to adapt open stoping to a variety of situations. Hole diameters from 70 mm to 200 mm are being used, with lengths of up to 100 m common for the latter.

Primary production blasting at Hamers- ley Iron began with seven inch holes at Tom Price in 1966 and has developed since then to large multiple row shots of 381 mm holes at Tom Price and 311 mm at Paraburdoo. Up to 1.3 million tonnes are initiated in a single blast with the average around 300,000 tonnes. Development can be traced through Anfo, AlAnfo, slurries, various boosters, initiation and delay techniques, hole loading and daily operating practices. A standard practice could be developed for the two mines for normal pro- duction blasts; this would not apply to such common variations as low "paddy" shots, pre- splitting, tight corners necessitating single row drilling etc. Because of ground variation three or even four sizes of drill holes may well be economic- al for blasting, even though this would be off set by complications in operation, supervision, store stocking and maintenance, particularly in Drilling.

Grade uncertainty can have a number of important implications for a mining operation. One of the most significant risks in not considering grade uncertainty in planning is the over or under allocation of processing or mining capacity when compared to realised grades. This could lead to wasted capital expenditure or missed opportunities to add value. This paper demonstrates a method that optimises production capacity and mining schedules in the presence of grade uncertainty. Applying this method to the case study of a nickel deposit recommended a reduction in processing capacity, an increase in mining capacity and more extensive utilisation of stockpiles than optimisations completed with traditional methods. As a result, average NPV improvements of between seven per cent and 27 per cent were gained.

Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) owns and manages the Ridgeway Gold Mine (RGM) located outside Orange in the state of New South Wales. RGM is a new underground sublevel caving (SLC) operation that is ramping up production to 4 Mtpa. The success of the SLC method at RGM is strongly influenced by production drill and blast practices. Distinguishing features of the Ridgeway SLC operation include choke blasting against broken rock, drawpoint brow preservation, loading of blastholes with different in-hole bulk emulsion densities, precharging of production rings and routine drawpoint fragmentation assessment. These areas are described in the context of RGMÆs required blasting objectives, production drilling and charging activities and innovative practices.

This paper investigates the causes of low effective utilisation of the production drill fleet at the Telfer Underground Gold Mine, as measured by the percussion hours per shift. The first part of this paper focuses on a site time and motion study conducted to accurately identify shift time allocation and optimal drilling parameters (manual versus automatic, and suitable flushing mediums for varying ground conditions) as well as quantifying the business potential for automated or remotely operated production drilling. The second part of the paper focuses on the rate of successful hole completion for automated production drilling during shift changes. Two main areas of drill optimisation were identified. Firstly, a site-specific drilling procedure was established so as to ensure that all operators were drilling using optimal parameters. Total production metres per rig increased by 10.7 per cent as a result of the implementation of this standard. It was observed that a 25 per cent faster overall drill cycle was achieved using air mist flushing, and that manual drilling achieves a 19 per cent faster overall drilling cycle in comparison to automated drilling. Secondly, routine provision to the maintenance department of automation reliability reports that outlined the principal causes of unsuccessful hole completion led to an increase in production metres of a further 4.1 per cent, measured between January 2007 and August 2007. First hole automation reliability increased from 39 per cent to over 77 per cent over the same time period. Second hole automation completion was increased to 74 per cent, leading to a higher proportion of production achieved through automated technologies.

Poor ground conditions associated with historical workings have presented significant challenges to the drilling of production downholes at the Sons of Gwalia Mine. The combination of foam and polymer drilling, the use of Aquacrete to drill through voids and the practice of lining completed holes has allowed downholes to be effectively drilled and blasted in delaminated ground.

The application of discreet event simulation has matured in modelling manufacturing systems for production analysis. This simulation tool was used in studying a number of mining operations, especially material handling processes. The study of truck-shovel operation including equipment matching, selection, and production estimation utilised the discrete event simulation for providing valuable decision-making information. The sophistication of the available simulation tools grew over times, and simulation driven animation was used to facilitate the validation and visualisation of the simulated system. This form of visualisation enhanced the simulation use greatly. First of all, it provided a communication medium to transfer information to the non-technical managerial personnel as a better decision-making tool. Moreover, the animated visualisation provided a validation tool to check the working of the simulated system and interaction among its components.

Mineral processing plants have become large and complex, generally through progressive expansions. Addition of a pre-crushing stage to conventional Semi-Autogenous-Grinding (SAG) and ball mill - crushing (SABC) circuits has introduced a complex materials handling system coping with +200 mm particles. Application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) and implementing hybrid comminution circuits (ie, HPGR-SAG mill) requires proactive control of the feed size distribution to each unit. Application of Vertical Tower Mills (VTMs) and other fine grinding equipment to achieve a finer grind size, while maintaining the throughput, requires splitting the feed evenly between parallel units. Many of the conventional comminution circuits (ie, staged crushing and screening followed by staged ball milling) must deal with the transition from open pit ore, which is generally altered and soft, to underground ore, which is intact and hard, requiring existing crushers to produce a finer product to unload the ball mills.This paper presents common process improvement opportunities which have been identified during a number plant process reviews conducted by the authors in Australian and international operations. The operation of comminution circuits to known and accepted standards, which is explained in this paper, could improve the performance of circuits by between 5 and 10 per cent, generally at no capital cost and often at a lower operating cost. The performance improvement can be realised as throughput increase, a finer product size, or reduced operating costs (ie, energy saving, low maintenance, less consumables).Process optimisation opportunities presented in this paper include: enhancing materials handling and storage to avoid segregation; standard operation of screens to reduce misplaced materials; proper feeding arrangement and control of crushers to increase their utilisation; preparing proper feed for SAG mills to reduce grind size; splitting the feed evenly between parallel equipment to improve utilisation, and controlling operation of classification units to improve energy utilisation.CITATION:Yahyaei, M and Powell, M S, 2018. As copper reserves deepen, they are becoming increasingly less pure. Penalty elements such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth are occurring in increasing concentrations. Environmental issues with smelters are leading to increases in penalty rates for these elements such that some concentrates may become difficult to sell. Arsenic concentration in Rosebery copper concentrates during 2010 varied between 3000 and 8500 ppm. Arsenic levels above 5000 ppm can preclude import to some customer countries. Optical mineralogy has indicated that arsenic in Rosebery copper concentrates is most commonly associated with tennantite (Cu12As4S13) in solid solution with tetrahedrite (Cu12As4S13). In addition, silver reports to concentrate as freibergite (Cu12As4S13 ). A reduction in arsenic content will therefore lead to a concurrent reduction in the silver content.A literature review by Long, Peng and Bradshaw (2012) indicated that arsenic bearing minerals could be removed using potential controlled flotation. Some success in reducing the amount of arsenic had also been reported using either roasting or chemical depression using reagents such as lime and cyanide. Due to the location of the Rosebery concentrator adjacent to world heritage listed temperate rainforest, the use of a roaster or cyanide was immediately discounted. Lime is already used as a reagent in the Rosebery flow sheet, so could be considered as a potential arsenic depressant.In order to determine a method of separating out the high arsenic bearing minerals, two series of flotation tests were conducted. Compared with elsewhere in the world, New Zealand quarries have tended to be mostly small. The reasons for this are a combination of the relatively high transport costs, low population density and a pioneering, self-employed attitude. The small size of the operations is reflected in low productivity, a tendency to repair and rebuild equipment rather than replace it, designed flexibility in the processing plant, minimal reserves investigation or development planning and a versatile and innovative work force who are generally not professionally trained. The Resource Management Act and the Health, Safety and Employment Act as well as a customer driven demand for higher quality and consistent products will have even greater influence upon future direction of the Industry. The trend will be towards fewer quarries operated by companies and professional managers that can adapt to the new demands.

With the aim of producing a concentrate with silica content lower than 1.0 per cent SiO2, laboratory experiments were conducted using a sample of the final concentrate from the Samarco iron ore flotation plant (mechanical cells circuit). The sample contained 3.08 per cent SiO2. This sample was split in two size ranges: >105 ¦m and 2. The >105 ¦m fraction, representing 23.3 per cent of the initial mass, was re-ground to 100 per cent 2 content were obtained. Considering the mass proportions of the two size fractions, the calculated silica content of the combined concentrate was 0.68 per cent, which is considered satisfactory for the objective of this investigation. The major reasons for the higher (0.90 per cent) silica content of the concentrate from the coarse fraction are the presence of silicon in the lattice of goethite and the presence of residual silicious slimes in the pores of porous hematite.

Zinc and lead sulphide flotation con centrates containing from 0.02 to 0.20% Cd are roasted on an updraught sinter machine at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corp- oration Pty. Limited to provide sinter for simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead in an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.). The major portion (about 85%) of cad- mium in concentrate feed to the Sinter Plant is eliminated with sinter fume and is rec- overed by weak acid leaching in the Cadmium Plant'followed by counter-current decantat- ion, ion exchange concentration, precipitat- ion of cadmium sponge and partial refining to caustic refined cadmium metal. Cadmium not eliminated during sintering is volatilised in the I.S.F. and subsequently recovered as zinc alloy by distillation in the zinc ref- ining columns of the Zinc Refluxer. The partially refined cadmium metal and cadmium- zinc alloy are blended as feed to the cadm- ium refining column where separation and recovery of cadmium is effected. Condensate from the column is further refined under caustic soda flux and cast into anode shapes. Production is 200 t.p.a. at 85% recovery of cadmium in concentrates. In, one stage of the purification sequence of the zinc sulphate electrolyte used at Risdon, cobalt is, precipitated as cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate, which is separated from the solution by filtration. Owing to the method of conducting the purification the filter cake contains much gypsum, unconsumed calcium hydroxide, basic zinc sulphate, and entrained zinc sulphate solution, Small amounts of iron and copper that have escaped previous purification steps are also precipitated with the cobalt as nitroso-,B-naphtholate. Thisprecipitate, normally carrying about 18% cobalt, is the raw material for the production of cobalt oxide, cobalt sulphate and cobalt metal.COBALT OXIDEThe main problem in the preparation of a reasonable grade of cobalt oxide from the filter cake is the economic separation ,of the cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate from the gypsum. This was solved by the application of flotation. It was discovered that the cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate, under correct conditions, would float without any addition agent, giving a relatively high grade concentrate. A plant, was built and has been in operation since 1936. The filter cake is pulped with water and pumped to one of two mechanically agitated tanks, eath capable of holding one day's output. Sulphuric acid is added until the free acid concentration reaches about 3 gm. per litre. Basic zinc sulphate is dissolved and calcium hydroxide converted to gypsum. The pulp, carrying about 2t lb. of solids per gallon, is pumped at a suitable rate to the first of a series of 10 flotation, boxes.. Crandallite and millisite in Christmas Island 'B' and 'C' phosphate ores are rapidly decomposed by sodium hydroxide solutions at about 80QC. As these phosphates generally contain less than 1% silica, an alkaline extraction process can be designed, in which up to 95% of the sodium hydroxide used, may be recycled. The insoluble residue consists of an impure, highly reactive apatite, which in pot trials, has given good responses as a direct application fertiliser; alternatively this residue can be underacidulated to give a granular product with fertiliser potential. The hot leaching solution contains up to 95% of the alumina and approx- imately half of the phosphate from the original ore. Simple crystallising techniques have been developed on a laboratory-scale to use this leaching solution for producing smelter-grade alumina and detergent-quality trisodium phosphate. As the demand for detergents is limited, an investigation was made of the reaction between trisodium phosphate and slaked lime, derived from a high-grade New Zealand limestone occurring near Oamaru. The product is calcium phosphate, containing up to 40% P205, and less than 0.2% each of iron, aluminium and fluorine, and it should be a useful raw material for phosphoric acid manufacture. A preliminary economic evaluation of the whole process looks promising, And warrants further investigations, including pilot-plant work.

Australia has, and faces, a growing problem with regard to the ability to meet the demand for liquid fuels from indigenous petroleum resources. The position for natural gas is better but there is no room for complacency. Since the coal resources are relatively extensive, interest in the prospect of producing liquid fuels from coal is in- creasing. The approaches to the production of gaseous and liquid fuels are briefly reviewed and the present status of coal conversion technology is discussed. Many problems remain to be solved and it is estimated (in the USA) that another 8-10 years will be required before any of the processes for liquid fuel production are considered sufficiently efficient and viable to go to a demonstration plant. Coals represent complex feedstocks and the effects of variations in coal properties on oil-from-coal processes are not fully understood. The thermal efficiencies of various coal conversion processes are considered in relation to their impact on coal requirements. The production of Australia's present requirement for liquid fuels by the only commercial process in operation would require a four-fold expansion in the local consumption of coal. Any assessment of the suitability of oil-from-coal processes currently under development overseas for Austra- lian coals and requirements must take heed of the differences in coal properties and motivation. The economic via- bility of processes for producing oil from coal will continue to be uncertain because of the large difference between the World price for crude oil and the actual production cost.
