This paper presents a study about reopening of a quarry near to the geothermal region of Kntahya, Turkey. The production method was gallery blasting which resulted in very high ground vibrations. Therefore the quarry had been closed down by the local authorities about 12 years ago due to possible damages to the geothermal resources. In order to reopen the quarry, reserve estimation and production planning studies needs to be carried out as well as applying environmentally sensitive production method. The result of reserve estimation studies showed approximately 12.5 Mt reserve in the area. The market studies indicated that annual production of 600 000 tonnes could be sold. These results justify to reopen the quarry. In order to overcome environmental problems, bench blasting production method instead of gallery blasting has been planned. This method enables to design a drilling blasting pattern that will almost result in no ground vibrations.

Underground mining operations on Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile were suspended in 1976, suffering the combined effects of low gold prices and grades. A subsequent substantial increase in the gold price led to the decision by Kalgoorlie Mining Associates to reopen their mines in 1979. The two shafts selected for access required excessive maintenance. The geological assessment and development parameters prescribed have been successfully used to establish reserves to maintain production at a 390 000 tonnes per annum rate. While ore reserve grade is being maintained from primary stoping sources, supplementary lower grade ore is drawn from remnant pillars and stopes at lower cost.Performance by the workforce has reached levels previously attained and a record tonnage was hoisted in the fourth year after recommencement.Keywords : Golden Mile lodes, geological research, payruns, cut and fill, mill holes, gold price, ore grade, amalgamation.

The project to reopen the Tasmania Mine has centred around efforts to reopen the Hart Shaft to access the high grade reef remaining below the old workings, which extend down to 457 in. Efforts in 1982 and 1987 were frustrated by unstable clay ground around the shaft, which resulted in significant subsidence of the shaft collar and lining. A successful program has since been implemented to solve the problems, stabilize the collar and recover the upper shaft which had collapsed down to 90 m.

The following is a brief summary of the Bulli Colliery and its method of operation when Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. took control.Bulli Colliery is situated about a mile west of the village of Bulli and is some 10 mUes north of the Australian Iron and Steel Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.The mine is owned by Australian Iron and Steel Limited, who purchased it in 1936 from the liquidators of Bulli Colliery and Coke Works.It is one of the oldest working coal mines in Australia, having been opened about 1858 and has worked more or less continuously since that date.The seam worked is the No. 1, or Bulli, Seam, which outcrops along the escarpment of the Illawarra Range and is generally operated by tunnels, the portal at Bulli being some 440ft. above sea level.The colliery holding is fairly extensive, but the coal seam over a large portion of the area within two miles of the outcrop has been more or less destroyed by an intrusion of basalt.At present there is no coal being worked within a distance of about 21 miles from the surface, the farthest workings being about four miles from the tunnel mouth.The existing main haulage road, for the first two miles from the portal, is not straight; it is very narrow over fairly long stretches and has many changes of grade varying from 3% in favour of the load to 13% against the load.The dumping station and screens are situated close to the portal of the haulage tunnel, and at this point the coal is loaded into railway hopper waggons, which are then hauled by rope to the top of a self-acting incline. The waggons are lowered down the incline, a distance of approximately! mile, the ruling grade being about 18 %.From the bottom of the incline, waggons are hauled by Company's steam locomotive to exchange sidings from whence they are taken by New South Wales Government Railway engine to the Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.

Molten slag used in the secondary refining process (RH process) for the production of Ultra-Low C (ULC) steel is typically composed of CaO-Al2O3-MgOsat.-FetO with minor constituents. FetO in the RH slag is the main source of reoxidation of the molten ULC steel in the ladle by 2Al + 3(FetO) = (Al2O3) + 3Fe, thereby serving as the source of the alumina inclusions. On the other hand, FetO also enhances the fluidity of the slag, thereby increasing inclusion absorption capacity. Optimum slag chemistry design is therefore required to produce clear ULC steel. The reoxidation kinetics was investigated in the present study by employing high-temperature experiments and developing the reaction rate model. Initial compositions of slag ((% CaO)0/(% Al2O3)0 and (% FetO)0)) and reaction temperature were varied and change of [% Al] in the molten steel was measured. The rate-controlling step was analysed. It was found that the rate-controlling step in some cases changed during the reoxidation: from a mass transport of Al in the molten steel to a mixed transport including Al2O3 in the molten slag. The experimental data validated the reaction rate model based on the elucidated reaction mechanism and FactSage thermodynamic database. The model suggested that high (% CaO)0/(% Al2O3)0 suppresses the reoxidation only when (% FetO)0 is low (5 or lower in the present study).

In earlier studies along a mining region recipient (the river VormbScken, northern Sweden), the fraction of certain trace metals recovered in the particulate phase has been found to increase with increasing concentrations of particulate iron. This study was conducted to see if the pattern could be reproduced by adding minor amounts of ferrous iron, simulating groundwater inputs. When the iron is oxidised in the near neutral river water, it will form iron oxyhydroxides and precipitate. Trace metals may be either co-precipitated along with the iron, or adsorbed onto the freshly formed precipitates. If this is the case, such a mechanism may be incorporated as a part of a final polishing step in a mine drainage treatment system based on natural attenuation processes. The experiments were performed at 0¦C and 22¦C, on authentic river waters collected during the winter and summer of 2002, respectively. In order to investigate the influence of particles and bacteria initially present, filtered river waters (4 solution were added to the experimental beakers, increasing the iron content of the waters by 0 - 1.5 mg/L. The oxidation and precipitation processes were followed by means of filtration (0.2 ¦m) for up to seven days. In order to be able to compare the experimental results with the actual field situation, on both experimental occasions, surface water samples were collected also from three stations situated along the river. The samples collected were analysed for iron, calcium, and trace metals by AAS and ICP-MS. The iron oxyhydroxides formed in the experiment did not influence the partitioning of As, Cu, and Pb to the same extent as the particulate iron encountered along the river appeared to do. The steel industry continues to explore and demonstrate technologies that decrease its greenhouse gas emissions, especially in blast furnace ironmaking where alternate operating conditions will be required. As the furnace has been optimised over many years, it is approaching the minimum fuel rate possible with coke and Pulverised Coal Injection (PCI). Alternative operating conditions are therefore required to further decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Because of this, hydrogen has been proposed as a reducing agent in the blast furnace. Injection of hydrogen through the tuyeres was assessed using a comprehensive 2D blast furnace global model. The model was calibrated to a blast furnace operating with PCI as a base case and various approaches to hydrogen injection assessed, with a particular focus on displacing PCI. The maximum hydrogen injection rate of 19.5 kg H2 per tonne of hot metal was predicted, limited by decreases in the raceway adiabatic flame temperature and top gas temperature. Internal blast furnace conditions, such as gas composition and reduction degree were also predicted. Holistic analysis was performed to estimate the effectiveness of hydrogen injection on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Based on these results, the changes in blast furnace operation and emissions under hydrogen injection are discussed.

Dr. Willett. I will start by answering one or two general points which have been posed. The first point is a question of liability of a seam to spontaneous combustion. Some seams are very liable to spontaneous combustion. Some seams are not liable at all except in most abnormal circumstances, and some seams have a liability somewhere between these two extremes. Dr. J. S. Haldane made the comment some 50 years or so ago that if you try hard enough you can make any coal seam in the world fire spontaneously. Many heatings have in fact occurred because the coal has been allowed to be ground up into a fine state and there has been air leakage through it for many years. This has resulted in spontaneous combustion which would not have occurred in some seams unless conditions had been very abnormal indeed. One comment I heard while listening to the discussions of one team was the importance of encouraging morale and the team seemed to go to the extent of suggesting that this was more important than the actual technical action taken. Though I agree that everything possible should be done to encourage morale, it must be in conjunction with the correct technical method of dealing with the Emergency.

The additional information that Clarke and Taylor (1982) provide about the important but poorly documented Ardlethan deposit is, of course, very welcome. However their contention that structural considerations, in conjunction with petrology, alter the interpretation of the mineralogical and geochemical data presented previously (Scott, 1981) is not accompanied by adequate supporting evidence. Indeed characteristics of the orebodies studied invalidate their arguments.Heterogeneity between matrix and fragments is not a problem in the South Cherry and Ardwest orebodies because most samples are comprised entirely of interlocking hydrothermal assemblages with a fabric and mineralogy that is uniform through both former breccia fragments and matrix. In hand specimen, the rock superficially resembles altered granite and, as indicated by Clarke and Taylor (1982), a brecciated texture is difficult to discern. In thin section, relict brecciated textures can be observed as localized changes in the grainsize or in the distribution of minerals that outline former breccia fragments (P. J. Eadington, 1982, personal communication).Because of the intense brecciation and comminution of rocks (fragments < 10 mm are usual) in the South Cherry and Ardwest breccia bodies, hydrothermal recrystallization was complete, resulting in homogenization of fragments and matrix. Furthermore, the amount of sample analysed (-100 g for drill core and 2-3 kg for hand specimens) is sufficiently large to be representative of both former breccia fragments and matrix. The Carpathia and Stackpool orebodies, with their abundance of sedimentary fragments, have alteration superimposed on a heterogeneous fabric, and were not studied. Thus the problems of differentiating between fragments and matrix (Clarke and Taylor, 1982) are irrelevant to the particular orebodies described in my paper.Within the alteration halo, which is several hundred metres wide (Paterson, 1976), the very uniformity of the alteration assemblages implies that subsequent, postmineralization brecciation is of only minor significance.Indeed tourmaline pipes in the Ardwest pit are less than several metres across (Clarke, 1979) and produce minimal alteration in the surrounding rocks. Therefore the interpretation of the mineralogical zonation is not compromised by the recognition of several periods of brecciation.

P S B Stewart has rightly pointed to a possible obscurity in our paper on drilling patterns, viz. in comparing the improvement of a triangular drilling pattern over a square one, we used percentage improvements without always making clear their base. We hope, however, that other readers, like Stewart, have been able to understand the particular meaning from the context.Although different methods of estimation of an ore deposit will have different local bias (Philip and Watson, 1985), the critical relationship affecting the reliability of estimation of an unsampled location is the scale of local variation of the variable being estimated in comparison with the density and isotropy of sampling. This relationship overrides all other considerations.

I am honoured and very pleased to have been given the opportunity this evening to say a few words of thanks not only on behalf of all the guests but especially for the delegates and accompanying persons attending the 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. Firstly, I would like to congratulate Sir Hamilton Whyte,KCMG for his most interesting address. In his far ranging talk, when he showed knowledge of widely diverse subjects, I had a brief fear that he was going to be talking about the details of support methods in deep level mines, or how to avoid flotation problems in multi-metal mines. Although he did not go that far, he touched on subjects which have arisen this week - long term planning and secure supply of minerals at acceptable prices. The dire predictions of the Club of Rome have been debunked with a far more elastic supply of minerals having been proved. Combined with the importance of a falling birthrate in some parts of the world, this will lead to many changes in the future, when hopefully governments will take the long term view rather than look at the next budget or the next election. Maybe some of them are not too lazy to do this for all of us. However as a fellow Ukranian, I feel that he might have been called something different if he had been in Australia. Sir Hamilton, thank you for your talk. Once upon a time - and this is not a fairy story - there was a cobbler who had two sons; one very bright who became a professor of mathematics; the other, dim, who became a millionaire shoemaker. Asked for the secret of his success, the millionaire attributed it to a vital piece of economics which his father had imparted, "Be content with small margins on a large turnover." "So", said the millionaire, "I make my shoes for $2 a pair and sell them for $5. I am very happy with the three per cent profit."

This report on the 5th International Conference on Underground Space and Earth Sheltered Structures, which was held at the University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands, on 2 to 5 August 1992, was submitted to the members of the Australian Underground Construction and Tunnelling Association. The report describes the conference themes and outcomes and puts forward some observations about a growing world-wide interest in the promotion of appropriate uses of underground space. The report recommends the creation of an Australian centre for research to bring together a wide range of professional disciplines and to focus attention on the potential benefits of using underground space.

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) as a seam gas has occurred in several locations in the German Creek seam at Southern Colliery. This paper overviews the techniques developed to quantify the H2S content of the seam, overviews research into controlling and reducing H2S emissions from the seam, and details the procedures used to mine through the HZS zone in 702 longwall panel. Learning points from research and mining experience are reviewed for application in the next longwall block.

It is my role at this juncture to report to you on behalf of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions itself. In essence, the Council is an orbital body - a little like Halley's Comet - it returns to earth, in spectacular style, once in every four years. We must acknowledge, however, that the spectacle is provided by the constituent member body organising the particular event and, on this occasion, it is The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. On behalf of the Council and its other constituent bodies may I thank the Australasian Institute most sincerely. Our thanks go to Sir James Foots, the President of the 13th Congress, and to all the members of the organising committee and to the five sub- committees. Over 40 people are involved as full members and I am certain there will have been many more involved in very meaningful ways. None of this great- team would ask me to mention them individually, I'm sure, but to fail to acknowledge the role of John Funnell, the Honorary Secretary, would be an unforgivable omission. We must also thank the kindred institutions in Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia who all helped with the tours themselves or with the initial preparations. Qantas, Jetabout Australia, and Jetabout Singapore have all also made very important contributions and, in our different ways, we each owe our thanks to them. At the two most recent meetings of the Congress - in Hong Kong and Johannesburg - Professor Marston Fleming made this report on behalf of the Council and was supported on both occasions by Robert MacWilliam as vice- chairman. Marston died in 1983 and Robert died in 1984; both men contributed a great deal to CMMI and we will miss their counsel for a long time. As you know, Sir Alistair Frame succeeded Marston Fleming as chairman in 1984 and I succeeded Robert MacWilliam as Vice-chairman.

During investigations of the treatment methods for ore from the Bird-in-Hand gold mine carried out at Kalgoorlie and at these laboratories, it was found that excess alkali caused a lowering of extraction by cyanide, the cause of this being attrIbuted to the presence of a small amount of oxidised lead compounds in the ore. The subject has been discussed by various writers,3 but no satisfactory explanation of existing facts has been put forward. THE area dealt with in this paper is included within a radius of about 3 miles of the Poimena township. Several thousand tons of tin have been won from this field, and probably £200,000 spent in exploiting it.PREVIOUS LITERATUREThe field has been reported on by Government geologists on four occasions and several ,articles on it have appeared in the mining journals. The work done by Government geologists is summarized below:-"Report on the Blue Tier Tin Mining District and its Tin Deposits", 1886.Speaking of the tin-ore occurrences, this paper states:-"In the primary granite the lodes of tin ore occur, also dykes and belts of more recently obtruded porphyries. The really valuable metalliferous deposits may be classified as follows :-1. Lodes (of which the Lottah mine is typical).2. Dykes- (a) Indurated or hard (as shown by the formations at the Anchor and Cream Creek mines). (b) Soft (eg Hayley's Lease).

The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) was formed in 1994 to promote development and adoption of international standards for estimation and reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. The CRIRSCO standards have been accepted by most mining companies and professional societies worldwide. Market regulators from Australia, South Africa and Canada require that these standards be followed when releasing public information. Among these requirements is the use of specific definitions for what constitutes exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. If such information is publicly disclosed in must be estimated by a Competent or Qualified Person. In the United States of America, public disclosures are regulated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC does not recognise the CRIRSCO guidelines, and some of the SEC requirements for public release of information are materially different from those applicable in other countries. The CRIRSCO definitions and the Competent Person requirements are reviewed and compared with those of the SEC. The organisation of the SEC and its rule making process are briefly discussed. Ongoing efforts to bring the US regulatory requirements closer to those applicable in other countries are presented, as well as other activities that CRIRSCO is entertaining with the United Nations, the International Accounting Standard Board and other international organisations to reach the objective of worldwide standardisation of reporting procedures.
