Base metal sulphide mineralisation on the northern end of Great Barrier Island is spatially associated with hypabyssal intermediate to acidic intrusives, in transgressive structures in indurated, complexly deformed greywackes and argillites. Copper predominates in the mineralisation, with minor accompanying lead and zinc and also some gold and silver. However, in some cases lead or zinc may be the dominant constituent. The mineralisation is generally characterised by only narrow envelopes of weak alteration (propyliticassemblages dominated by chlorite and epidote) and with only minor amounts of quartz accompanying the sulphides, which form a cement in zones of hydraulic fracturing. There are two distinct structural settings to the mineralisation: at MinerÆs Head, in a structurally complex situation in a shell-like zone of crackling in hornfelsed greywacke, in association with both north- and east-striking fractures and rubble breccias associated with the apical part of a large intrusive; and in very narrow, but very strike-persistent, 1inear steeply-dipping fracture zones, exposed on the north coast and inland areas near Tataweka.

Base metal skarns have provided most of South KoreaÆs Pb-Zn production since the end of the Korean War, with the bulk of production coming from the Yeonwha group of mines. Currently only the Kumho Zn-Pb mine remains in production, while magnetite skarns are mined as iron ore at the old Yomisan and Ulsan base metal deposits. Base metal skarns within Korea fall into two groups; those hosted in Cambro-Ordovician limestone sequences, situated mainly in sub-basins in the northeast of the peninsula and those hosted within carbonate volcaniclastics of the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin, in the southeast. Sulphide mineralisation is dominated by sphalerite, lesser galena, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite, with subordinate chalcopyrite and molybdenite with Ag-Co credits. Skarns are composed of pyroxene-clinopyroxene-garnet-carbonate-quartz and magnetite, grading into silica-chlorite hornfels. Most of the significant deposits display both pipe-like and stratabound morphology. In the Hwanggang district, a zoned distribution of Ordovician carbonate hosted, polymetallic Mo-W and Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag base metal deposits is observed around the margin of a Cretaceous granite intrusion. Similar polymetallic zoning is recognised in the Sangdong district, where deposits include Sangdong (W), Abisan (Au-As) and Yomisan Northwest (Zn-Mo) and Yomisan Southeast (Zn-Cu-Co), hosted in Ordovician carbonates in proximity to Cretaceous quartz porphyry intrusives. The Taebaeksan district hosts the largest deposits at the Yeonwha group of mines. Although production ceased in 1993, significant resources remain, hosted in Ordovician limestone and dolomite that have been intruded by Cretaceous quartz porphyry dykes. Deposits in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin consist of bedding concordant, vertically stacked base metal skarn mineralisation at several stratigraphic horizons, connected by carbonate-base metal veins with a pipe-like geometry. Evidence such as massive sulphide layers and restricted proximal carbonates suggest mineralisation was initially partly syn-depositional, with both base metals and carbonate venting onto a lake floor, being reconstituted to skarns by later magmatic activity. Skarn mineralisation is universally closely associated with the Cretaceous Bulgugsa Series acid intrusive activity. A common intrusive-structural relationship is recognised at some deposits, with bedding plane and imbricate thrust faulting, introducing felsic intrusives as sills. These intrusions probably introduced the base metals, carbonate, boron, heat and silica, which metasomatically reconstituted the carbonate lithologies to form skarn assemblages. The Korean base metal skarn deposits are regarded as Zn-Pb chimney-manto skarns and display similarities to the Mexican manto type deposits.

The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. Flue dust from the sintering of base metal sulphides was leached to remove cadmium and arsenic. Leach liquor contained cadmium, zinc and small amounts of other base metals as chlorides. Results are reported of the use of a cation exchange resin Zeocarb 225 to separate the base metals from the arsenic. The resin was eluted with sodium chloride or sulphate to give a solution of relatively concentrated cadmium suitable for recovery by zinc cementation. The limited solubility of sodium sulphate presented some practical problems which were investigated. Another problem was the precipitation of lead sulphate in the resin during elution.INTRODUCTIONWhen lead-zinc sulphides are sintered prior to smelting, the gases passing to the flue are mainly uncondensable but contain a certain proportion of sublimates and dust particles which deposit in the flue or are carried, after condensation in the gas stream, to some form of dust extraction equipment.The recovered dust is a complex mixture of base metal sulphates, sulphites, sulphides, chlorides and oxides, the composition depending on the original concentrates. A large proportion of the cadmium and some of the arsenic originally in the concentrates finds its way to this flue dust, the treatment of which can be a convenient means of removing these elements and controlling their concentrations in the main lead-zinc smelter circuit. Past experience of ground settlement and groundwater monitoring for tunnelling projects in Melbourne has provided an appreciation of the value and importance to owners of establishing a broad baseline monitoring program of the ground surface movements and groundwater movements well in advance of the commencement of any excavation and tunnelling activities. For the Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) tunnels in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, a baseline monitoring network of ground settlement points and groundwater wells was established in early 2006, 18 months prior to the commencement of project construction, and has continued throughout the tunnelling and project construction activities. This baseline monitoring network provides insights into the superposition and interpretation of both tunnelling and non-tunnelling effects, such as seasonal effects, which result in ground settlement.In the case of the NSP the baseline monitoring and construction phase excavations coincided with several years of drought. The reduced rainfall developed overall downward settlement trends project wide that could easily be mistaken at the local site level to be construction effects if the baseline monitoring was not available to show otherwise. There are lessons to be learned from the NSP experience for tunnel projects where there are variable surface soil types and where project-specific settlement criteria are to be established for the protection of property prior to construction.This paper presents examples of the baseline monitoring, how the tunnelling-specific settlement was identified and determined, and what this means in terms of how settlement criteria should be established and set for project consenting and in the construction contract documents.

Biological monitoring programs for environmental protection require techniques that will provide both early detection of possible adverse effects, and assessment of the ecological significance of these effects. Monitoring techniques must include responses sensitive to the impact, that can be subjected to rigorous statistical analysis and for which statistical power is high. Such issues in baseline research of 'what and how to measure?' and 'for how long?' have been the focus of a program being developed to monitor and assess effects of mining operations on the effectively pristine, freshwater ecosystems of the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in tropical northern Australia. Application of the BACIP design, utilising a form of temporal replication, to univariate data (single species) and multivariate (community) data is described. For new ventures in Australia (such as mining), monitoring programs should be designed to establish with high probability that an impact on the ecosystem no greater than a prescribed amount has gone undetected - as opposed to simply allowing development to continue as long as 'proof' of impact is not available. Such a precautionary approach represents a shifting of the 'burden of proof' and would require with the BACIP design, a minimum number of baseline years in order to achieve some desired level of statistical power in a test for impact. Power analyses conducted on two to five years (depending upon the technique) of baseline data from streams of the ARR indicate that the BACIP design would not impose developmental constraints on mining and that a policy of reversal of the burden of proof would provide the cornerstone required for managing such development in an ecologically sustainable manner.

In the Mount Victor area of the Eastern Highlands Province, re- connaissance geological mapping and new micropalaeontological data have revealed the existence of at least three small thrust- bound windows exposing late Middle to Late Cretaceous (Late Aptian-Early Albian and Late Santonian-Maastrichtian) sedimen- tary rocks and pillow lavas, Latest Paleocene- Earliest Eocene pillow lavas, and Latest Paleocene-Earliest Eocene bathyal micrites. Late Middle Eocene to Late Eocene inner neritic bioclastic micrite units also occurs in thrust contact with Middle Miocene Yaveufa Formation volcanolithic conglomerates. The Cretaceous and Early Tertiary units appear to be thrust-bound and are best exposed in a window just south of Mount Victor, and in two smaller windows to the east. The inner neritic Eocene limestone occurs in a thrust-bound sliver within the Yaveufa For- mation near Obura. The windows occur within extensive out- crop of Early Miocene Omaura Formation and the Yaveufa For- mation. Thin-bedded grey mudstone, siltstone and sandstone, typical of much of the Chim Formation form only a small part of the exposure of Cretaceous rocks. Thick-bedded volcanolithic conglomerate, spilitic pillow basalts, and welded basic tuffs domi- nate the Cretaceous section. The stratigraphy and structure of the Mount Victor area is similar to the Menyamya area, the Aure Scarp, and perhaps the Tapini area. This study has raised the possibility of widespread thrust- ing in the Kainantu area, and suggests that the boundary between the Omaura and Yaveufa Formations is thrusted, at least locally.

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) in wastewater treatment as a separation process of submillimetre biological flocs is based on the generation of bubble/floc aggregates. DAF is a complex process but has got advantages, such as allowing a high hydraulic load, compared to sedimentation. A thorough knowledge of the physics of the DAF process is, however, still lacking. This paper will present results of experimental studies on three aspects of significance to the separation process û the flow structure in the flotation tank, rise velocities of aggregates, influence of floc size on the separation efficiency. Flow structure. Measurements were performed in a pilot plant mapping and visualising the velocity field. The dispersion water (bubbles) had a decisive influence on the flow structure due to the effect of the bubbles on the bulk water density. Stratified conditions with a less dense, bubble-containing upper layer and a clear water, denser bottom layer were important for a good separation. A simple model of the stratified flow structure was elaborated making it possible to interpret the function of the aggregate rise velocities. Bubble/floc aggregates. The dynamics of single flocs, bubbles, aggregates were visualised using a borescope + CCD video camera + digital recorder + image analysis. Sequences of video frames made it possible to determine the rise velocities of the single aggregates. These velocities were found to be in the range 1 - 9 mm/s with a tendency for large flocs to have higher rise velocities. Separation versus floc size. The floc size distribution was measured in the DAF process. Data from three different DAF cases showed, that large flocs (> about 100 ¦m) were entirely separated, whereas small flocs experienced a less good separation. It was, moreover, found, that a very significant separation of flocs took place in the very upstream end of the separation zone in a pilot plant case.

Underground measurements, observations and computed simulations, started a long time ago were concerning the study of : - occurence of typical rockburst, - inducing, stretching of main fractures in the roof of caved longwalls. They made obvious a foundamental phenomenon of inducing of strata fractures involving contact be- tween two layers quite different in their elastic characteristics : coalseam and rocklayer.. The start of primary cracks in maximum abutment zone takes place in the rock near the contact surface. It is opening of crevasses induced by traction stress component resulting of difference of rigidity of both materials and no sliding on in- terface. Occurence and stretching of these crevas- ses are a rheological phenomenon so that the rate of advance and stops of the face influence the distance between the crevasses and the stretching of these ones. The characteristics of these cracks in space and time affect mining conditions. So it is for fractures proximity and expan- sion inducing eventual blocks formation in longwall roofs in front of faces, for depth and delay of road- ways ribsides fracturing, inducing some rockbursts. In longwalls roofs, cracks initiated in front of a face can be either quite close or quite distant each from the other one, according to the depth of crushed coal in front of the face, which af- fects also extension of the cracks.

Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (B.O.S.) commenced in Australia in December, 1962. Two 200-ton furnaces were installed initially at Newcastle with a 50-ton furnace coupled to a continuous casting machine added in 1967. In 1965, two 100-ton furnaces were installed at Whyalla plant and two 225-ton furnaces are nearing com- pletion at Port Kembla to commence oper- ations in 1972. Plant layouts in each centre differ due to changing circumstance and increasing knowledge of the B.O.S. process since 1962. Raw materials are a most important factor for good operation of the process. Most materials come from within Australia but some are imported. General operating practices are similar in each plant, although treatment of fume at Port Kembla will be by the OG (Oxygen Converter Gas Recovery) Process as against electrostatic precipitators in Newcastle and Whyalla. Special alloy steels as well as plain carbon steels can be made by the B.O.S. process. Production potential of the process in Australia has yet to be fully utilised with 45 per cent of steel production coming from B.O.S. In 1971.

Sphalerite flotation without Cu activation in the presence of iron ions has been reported and studied as a function of pH, dissolved oxygen content and pulp potential with both single mineral and ore samples (Leroux, Rao and Finch, 1987; Xu et al, 1992; Zhang, Rao and Finch, 1992). The flotation was attributed to ferric hydroxy xanthate. As a prelude to surface analysis to try to identify the species responsible, bulk precipitates formed from iron salt and xanthate solutions under different conditions were obtained and analysed. Analysis techniques included ultraviolet spectroscopy,infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy. It is tentatively concluded that the bulk precipitates contain three ferric components, two hydroxy xanthates (Fe(OH)2X and Fe(OH)X2) and iron oxide (FeO.).

Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, a O2- , and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of a O2- , which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. BATMINÖ, BATMINEÖ, BATMINDÖ are an abbreviation for Business Analysis Tools for Mining, Mine Evaluation and Mine Design respectively. BATMINP are proprietary tools customised to suit individual client requirements. The first suite of tools provides for analysis and evaluation of open pit mining equipment alternatives and includes fleet selection, fleet sizing and production, productivity and economic outcomes. The models address all mine process activities including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and auxiliary services. All models are built to provide for simultaneous evaluation of multiple alternatives that are time and condition related. Provision is made for modelling from first principles and/or default or shortcut inputs. Sensitivities to key input parameters are easily performed and consistent logic is applied throughout the process. The models are built to provide key outputs in a format suitable for presentation and documentation. Provision is also made in the models for validation of both inputs and outputs through benchmarking, back analysis and budget comparison. The same models can be used for short interval (12 month) planning and control, medium-term (three to five years) and long-term life-of-mine (LOM) planning. Millions of dollars are spent each year on mining plant and equipment. Decisions that impact on the medium and long-term are made. BATMINP tools have been used to perform studies with good results and in most cases the studies have been validated through back analysis and comparing model outcomes to real data.

A process was developed to produce electrolytic manganese dioxide, suitable for use in high quality dry cells, from Risdon anode mud. ImpurItIes present In the anode mud were removed prior to the electrolysis which was performed from a manganese sulphate bath using the following conditions.Temp. 95°CH2S04 50-55 g/l.Mn2+ 55-60 g/l.Anode c.d. 10·0 A/sq. ft.Operation under these conditions yielded current efficiency and power consumption figures of 95 per cent and 0·8 kWh/lb respectively. The product conformed to battery manufacturers' specifications as regards physical and chemical properties and performed satisfactorily in a battery testing programme.

Bauxite was discovered in the Kimberley in 1965 by an Amax field crew. Reserves of 230 million tons, of bauxite. averaging 47% total alumina on Mitchell Plateau and 980 million tons averaging 36% total alumina on Cape Bougainville have been indicated by the results of drilling and bulk sampling. Laterite which contains the bauxite deposits caps basalt and interbedded sandstone and siltstone of the Carson Volcanics formation. Bauxite on Mitchell Plateau is 3.2 metres thick on average and is underlain successively by nodular ironstone, clay and basalt. The major components of the bauxite are gibbsite,boehmite, hematite and goethite containing some alumina, anatase and clay minerals. Quartz and vanadium oxide are minor constituents. Boehmite and hematite are concentrated near the surface, whereas gibbsite and goethite predominate at depth. The bauxite profile consists of ferru- ginous, pisolitic and gibbsitic zones with increasing depth. Cape Bougainville bauxite is 8.6 metres thick on average and of tubular structure; its mineralogy is relatively uniform..

Bauxitic laterite of variable thickness and grade is best developed in the Darling Range but covers a large part of the southwest corner of Western Australia. Its limits are defined by the rainfall isohyets to which jarrah forest is confined. Within this broad belt there is an increase in arable land southwards concomitant with a thinning of the laterite layer.Bauxite quality and perhaps thickness as well are dependent on the type of source rock, and are influenced by topography. Economic deposits occur over a vertical range in altitude of about 1200 ft.
