The challenges of increasingly scarce water resources and the risk of dam failures has seen the mining industry turn to sustainable tailings management solutions such as dewatering and dry stacking. Filtering tailings has been seen in the past as a cost-prohibitive process for larger throughput mines. However, as larger pressure filters are developed, the economic case for filtered tailings has gained traction.Focus has largely been placed on the correct design and operation of the filters. It is critical, however, that the material handling portion of the disposal system is also properly designed and operated. Thorough testing at laboratory and pilot scale to determine the conveying properties of the filtered material needs to be conducted. This testing will insure the material handling system meets the important availability needs of the mine even during periods of variability in the upstream processes and mine plan.The control system must also be robust and flexible in design to compensate for this upstream process variability. The control system needs to allow for different flowsheets including straight filtered tails as well as EcoTails™, a low-energy solution for co-mingling waste rock and filter cake.This paper will present case studies of different material handling solutions, the testing required for them and the lessons learned from each.CITATION:Rahal, K, Nicholson, A, Stefansen, R and Wisdom, T, 2018. As the oxide reserves in an oxide/sulphide deposit are exhausted transition to the treatment of sulphides should be investigated in detail and well before processing the sulphide ore commences. The investigation should be broad based to consider all treatment options and not restricted entirely by the existing process plant treatment method. These options may include cyanidation, flotation, roasting, bacterial leaching or gravity treatment and are chosen on the basis of various testwork responses. Experiences in laboratory testing of sulphides and treatment of sulphides at various operations are discussed. This includes the treatment of copper/gold sulphides, CIP treatment of sulphides and treatment of marcasite ore in a conventional CIP circuit.

Project managers must juggle many aspects to bring their project in on time, on budget, and in accordance with the aims of the project owner. Whether the project is a mining feasibility study, a technology implementation or a construction project, it falls to the project manager and his or her team to deal with risk from two standpoints, which may be at odds with one another. First, a project team must deal with risks to the project itself û that is, risks to on-time, on-spec and on-budget delivery against the value promise made to the customer. Second, there is the management of risks within the subject matter of the project, undertaken on behalf of the customer. The project manager cannot dodge this responsibility; yet there is a tendency (particularly in smaller, in-house studies) to avoid digging too deep, possibly for fear of what may be uncovered! This paper investigates the responsibilities of project teams in regard to risk management and reporting. It examines ownership of project risk; the nature of risk management activities undertaken by the team during the course of a project; and outlines some controls to ensure that the two opposing arms of project risk are reconciled for the benefit of both the project team and the project owner.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The recent and active magmatic arcs of eastern Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Solomon Islands are well endowed with sulfide mineralisation and include deposits such as Ladolam, Panguna and Solwara 1. The majority of the mineral systems in this belt are younger than four million years old, with some deposits remaining active to the present day as exemplified by active hydrothermal systems on the island of Lihir. The geodynamic setting that led to the formation of these deposits is still unresolved, with, for example, both the Pacific and Solomon Sea plates considered responsible for the formation of the Ladolam deposit on the island of Lihir under different models. In order to understand and characterise the formation of south-west Pacific mineral deposits, we must first reconstruct the complex geodynamic evolution of the region. New kinematic reconstructions show that while mineral systems in eastern PNG and the Solomon Islands are hosted within a single arc related to subduction at the New Britain and San Cristobal trenches, variable and discrete geodynamic settings exist within both the upper and lower plates throughout this region, which give rise to distinct mineralised corridors. Most notably, this region is host to: the Solwara 1 deposit, which occurs within a major transtensional corridor in the eastern Bismarck Sea the Ladolam deposit (Lihir), which is interpreted to have formed above but in relation to tearing of the subducting slab the Panguna deposit, which is related to structure in the subducting slab marginal to the actively spreading Woodlark Basin.An evaluation of the nature and variability of these diverse geodynamic settings through time can provide us with a better understanding of the relationship between the active south-west Pacific magmatic arcs and mineral deposit formation. The five main ways in which coal is used are1. for electricity generation,2. as a lump fuel for domestic and industrial purposes,3. for gas making,4. for making carbon for chemical and metallurgicalindustry, and5. as a source of coal tar and coal-tar chemicals.In the past about 80 per cent of Victoria's brown coal has been used for power generation and the rest for making a lump fuel, in the form of briquettes. Some of these briquettes have been used for gas making, and a carbon industry based on them has recently been commenced, and could expand rapidly. However the enormous increases expected in power requirements, approximately a doubling every 10 years, will ensure that even if the manufacture of carbon increases dramatically and a large amount of coal is used for other purposes, the brown coal industry will always be dominated by power generation. As new fuels such as natural gas, oil, and nuclear fuel become available at competitive prices these will take their share of the power generation load.Natural gas or oil, or possibly pumped storage hydro, will almost certainly be used for all future peak-load stations, comprising around 40 per cent of the total installed generating capacity, but new base load stations will continue to be designed for brown coal operation until about the mid-1980s, by which time nuclear power stations will become competitive. By this time Victoria will have installed about 6000 MW capacity of brown coal stations, burning around 50 million tons/year of coal, compared with 18 million tons/year at present, with perhaps 15 million tons/year being used for other purposes.This consumption of 65 million tons/year should then remain fairly stable over the life of the power stations installed, well into the 21st century. Brown coal therefore appears to have an assured place in providinga major part of Victoria's fuel requirements, despite the diversification in fuel usage pattern which appears certain to occur with the recent developments in new fuel resources.

Violarite, (Ni,Fe) 3+x S4, is a ubiquitous secondary mineral in the supergene alteration zones of massive nickel sulphide deposits in Western Australia. It is formed by the pseudo- morphous replacement of pentlandite, pyrrhotite and/or millerite, and retains the textures typical of these precursors. Although the composition of the first-formed violarite is related to that of its precursor, supergene enrichment results in an increasing nickel:iron ratio toward the top of the supergene profile. In pentlandite-pyrrhotite ore, the replacement of pentlandite by violarite releases some nickel, which is consumed by the partial conversion of the pyrrhotite to iron-rich violarite. In pentlandite-millerite ore, on the other hand, the pentlandite, on conversion to violarite, appears to release excess iron that participates in the partial conversion of millerite to nickel- rich violarite. The characteristic textures exhibited by the secondary violarite and its replacement products in supergene and gossanitic deposits overlying massive nickel sulphide ores generally enable the original mineralogical compositions of the primary ores to be inferred.

In Europe there are many regions, where coal or lignite is mined with surface methods. In most of these regions coal/ lignite is mined below groundwater table and mining opera- tions require pumping big volumes of water. Drawdown of groundwater table has influence on surface water and ground- water on adjacent areas. Mine drainage requires purification and its discharge changes flow in existing streams. Some of mine water is used by mining companies themselves, some is used by other industries, some for communal purposes and some for irrigation. However, majority of mine water is dis- charged to rivers without use. The above issues are discus- sed on the background of general, technical and water charac- teristics of such regions in B European countries. Using a Jarrell-Ash "Compact" direct reading spectrometer, analyses were made of a wide variety of rocks ranging from acidic to ultrabasic types. Statistical evaluation suggests that accuracies comparable with the values obtained by the rapid chemical methods used by the United States Geological Survey will be obtained.The spectrographic method involves fusion of the rock with lithium tetraborate, strontium being incorporated in the flux as the internal standard. The resulting bead is ground with graphite and pressed into a pellet. The counts obtained on two standard pellets are used to correct for instrumental drift.Background readings are made at 4109 Å and corrections for background are made to all lines. Corrections for matrix interferences, both by chemical suppression and optical enhancement, are made. The three corrections of drift, background, and matrix are incorporated into one general expression which has been programmed on magnetic cards, each element requiring a separate card. The cards are placed individually into a desk top computer (an Olivetti Programma 101), which enables true counts to be calculated from the "readout" counts, and the element concentration is then obtained from computer-printed tables by referring to the appropriate value of true counts versus concentration. These tables were prepared by making a polynomial regression analysis of the spectrographic results from 50 standard and analysed samples, a curve of best fit being chosen for each element.The regression coefficients, usually of a fourth or fifth degree equation, together with other relevant data, were fed into a large computer, programmed to print out tables of concentration versus true counts. This technique enables the results obtained to be based on mathematically-derived values rather than on hand-drawn calibration graphs, giving greater inherent accuracy. The technique has been shown to give results of good accuracy and acceptable precision suitable for many geological and geochemical exploration programmes involving the analysis of many rock samples of different types.

Activated carbon particles obtained from a number of Australian CIP operations were examined with an optical and a scanning electron micro- scope and an electron microprobe. External surfaces, and polished sec- tions through individual particles, were examined with special reference to materials on the surface and to calcium and gold distributions. Photographs are presented of surface contamination of the particles by salts precipitated from the pulp such as calcium carbonate (calcite), calcium sulphate (gypsum), and a magnesium salt; ore minerals such as quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pentlandite, and various alumino- silicates; and other substances such as grinding media and a fungus. Calcite was very abundant but the other materials were less common. Contamination in the interior of carbon particles was almost exclu- sively calcium carbonate, and extensive contamination extended to the centre of some particles. A possible mechanism for the formation of cal- cium carbonate inside the carbon particles is noted. Gold X-ray dot maps of sections through carbon particles indicated that gold was distributed throughout coconut shell carbons and that although gold was more concentrated near the outer surfaces of extruded peat carbon particles, it was also present to depths of at least 500 ¦m. Kaolin used as an industrial mineral, especially that in the paper-manufacturing industry, must be of fine size, with high brightness, a low impurity content, and good crystal shape. However, in most kaolin deposits there are various impurities which have a very bad effect on the quality of the kaolin. Therefore, it is necessary to remove these impurities from kaolin ore. Owing to their similar surface properties, the separation of kaolin and iron oxide minerals, especially microkaolin and iron oxide minerals, has been regarded as difficult. The iron oxide minerals often intergrow with kaolin in fine and complicated forms, such as thin films, which make separation difficult. In order to overcome this difficulty, many workers have suggested various treatment methods and obtained great success. Based on research work by Fuerstenau (1980), Huang, Li and Hu (1984), Hui and Wei (1991), Shergold (1978), and Zambrana et al (1974), we have investigated a two-liquid flotation technique for iron removal from kaolin and obtained some success.

Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates a large base metal property near Bathurst, New Brunswick in eastern Canada. Nominal capacity for the underground mining operation and concentrator is 10 250 DMT/day. Four concentrates are produced by differential flotation technology to recover minerals containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. Two characteristics of the Brunswick ores have a major impact on mineral processing operations. The mineralogy of the ore is complex with a total sulphide mineral content of 85 per cent. In addition, the ore is extremely fine-grained, and satisfactory liberation is difficult to achieve. These characteristics directly influence flotation selectivity and thereby affect metallurgical performance. Significant improvements in metallurgical performance have been achieved through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment. Current operating practice and the metallurgical advancements are detailed.

Two blasthole density logging programmes have been conducted on the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine to evaluate the use of this type of logging as an aid to blast pattern design. The first programme also involved the setting up of a Density Test facility with which to calibrate the density probe. The programmes indicated that about 22-23 blastholes can be consistently logged per day at a cost of $1.30 per metre. Even though this is only half the rate required to log the average number of blastholes drilled daily on Mt Whaleback, testwork indicated that no significant loss of accuracy results if only half the holes in a pattern are logged. The major results of the programmes were: 1. The density range for black pyritic Shale is 2.2-2,9 g/cc. 2. The density range for soft to medium hard BIF is 2.1-3.0 g/cc. 3. The density range for hard BIF is 3.0-3.6 g/cc. 4. The front row blastholes show consistently lower densities than the main body holes due to blast damage. 5. A low density zone extending to a maximum depth of 6 m occurs at the top of most blastholes and results from blast damage from the bench above. Feasibility studies form a vital and significant component of the project delivery cycle. They are at the heart of the valuation process. This paper focuses on variables which can affect a project and how these are assessed as part of the decision-making process through feasibility studies. Test work and site selection needs; the degree of engineering required to meet the study requirements and the quality of owner project information are discussed. Also, local factors including permitting needs, social, environmental and government relations are considered. Engineering and site factors are crucial in the estimating process. The interaction of detailed engineering, engineering assumptions and estimating methodologies are therefore examined. The ownerÆs perspective is considered along with risk analysis, which is fundamental in project feasibility study activities. The impact of this is also discussed.

"The estimate and control of sampling errors is essential for all mining operations, especially when dealing with strategic materials, such as niobium. This paper is based on a traditional quality assurance and quality control technique used to confirm mineralised intersection zones, and proposes the validation of sampling data using diamond drill twin holes, in order to evaluate and improve the quality of the current data set. The geological model of the niobium mine – located in Araxá, Minas Gerais, Brazil – was built including 77 diamond drill holes of a sampling campaign carried out during the 1970s. There are few records about the collection and preparation procedures of these past samples, making it difficult to estimate the errors associated with their analytical results. Therefore, 11 twin drill holes were drilled to compare their samples against the samples from the 1970s drilling campaign. The new hole locations were chosen as near as possible to the old holes location. The JORC Code, 2012 edition, relates the use of twin holes as a good sampling technique to assess sampling and assay data. Three parameters were considered to validate the 1970s drill hole campaign by the twin drill hole campaign: the difference of the coordinates between the paired holes the difference among the positions of the geological contacts to validate the geologic description the difference between the paired samples grades was calculated to validate the analytical results.The analysis of the grade range variation between sample pairs was based on three techniques: geostatistical interpretation of vertical semivariogram to obtain the nugget effect calculation of the relative difference between duplicates calculation of the error associated with the sampling protocol established according to Pierre Gy’s Theory of Sampling.The results were satisfactory for hole coordinates; however, the ore content showed a high deviation, although this divergence can be explained by the nugget effect. For the lithological intervals, the new results contributed to an effective identification of variations among lithologies, ie brown weathered ore and saprolite. The mining industry has expanded significantly in the Pacific Region over the past two decades through a mix of new developments and brownfields expansions of existing operations. Despite this overall success there are also a number of well publicised examples of less than successful minerals ventures. These problem developments highlight the fact that success cannot be taken for granted and that rigorous planning and attention to detail is essential. The dominant growth has come through expansion of existing businesses, notably alumina, iron ore and coal, achieved through both efficiency gains on existing plant and step change capacity additions such as new mines and/or expanded processing plant. This expansion has largely been linked to increased market opportunities. The major issues are the quality and extent of the host resource, achieving the market targets, and the efficiency of the expansion effort. There can be also a range of site specific issues which need to be addressed. The development of new greenfields operations is often more complex as it can bring a wide range of new issues. Depending on the nature of the development, and the companies involved, these can extend from initial financing through to obtaining a market position. Incorporating major new technology and/or establishing infrastructure and attracting staff to remote locations can also add significant challenges. This paper outlines many of the critical factors which need to be considered prior to proceeding with major expansions or greenfields developments. These will be linked to a number of developments in the region over the past decade.

The CSA Mine has a long and varied history from initial discovery in 1871 through to the present. Lead-zinc mineralisation was mined historically near the surface. Today copper and silver are extracted from the deeper regions of the mine. The mine has passed through a number of owners over this time, each with a unique operating philosophy and understanding of the mineralisation. Cobar Management Pty Ltd re-opened the mine in 1999 and has undertaken extensive drilling programs to expand the resource and gain a better understanding of the mineralisation characteristics. Presently mineralisation has been located over a strike length of 1.2 km and to a depth of over 2.0 km with over 30 mineralised lenses from four identified ore systems. The refinement of geological and mineralisation models led to further discoveries and prompted a review and modification of resource modelling processes. Advanced statistical analyses prompted the implementation of ordinary kriging as a grade estimator. Improved stationarity from enhanced geological domaining has been supported by variography and kriging neighbourhood analysis studies. Resource models at CSA are now quantifiable in terms of mineralisation style and estimation reliability. The new techniques are assisting the definition of more mining fronts, which are creating new opportunities to increase mine output.

The current economic climate and demand for iron ore has resulted in mine operators being prepared to accept aggressive slope designs and associated failures provided that they can be quantified (ie volume of failure and clean up costs, etc) and incorporated into the mining costs, at a feasibility study level. This has numerous implications for pit slope design/geomechanics. Typically when geotechnical engineers conduct slope stability modelling a single value, usually the average or mean value for model input parameters (ie structural orientations, material properties and hydrological conditions) are chosen. The implications resulting from using a single value for model input parameters will vary depending on how the modeller has chosen the value, ie should the modeller choose a mean value from a log-normal distribution of material strengths an optimistic representation of the stability may eventuate, consequently if the designer decides to conservatively downgrade the values by a nominal factor, a pessimistic representation of slope angles may occur, which would result in excessive stripping and mine development costs. A more realistic and representative way to model the inherent variability of geological/geotechnical conditions would be to do so probabilistically. Whereby the modeller can assess the variability of the geological structure as observed/recorded during the core logging process and a similar approach for the material strength properties. The final model output would be a distribution of factors of safety in relation to overall slope angles, ie probabilities of failure for individual slope angles could be determined. This output (graph) could be modified by the mining engineer to incorporate mining costs as well as clean up costs for the respective slope angles and associated failure volumes, ie probabilities of failure. The author intends to provide a detailed overview of the processes involved in deriving a geotechnical design, ie; starting from the data collection phase (core logging/face mapping), through to the data interpretation and formulation of slope parameters; determining the variability and uncertainties associated with each of the process; ensuring that it is adequately captured in the model input parameters; and how the mining engineer could utilise this information to derive final feasibility study mining costs.

Soil air samples taken from the top one metre of the soil profile, were measured for C02 and 02 using portable field analysers at a number of sites of known sulphide mineralisation in South Australia. Experience with tyre wear on Wabco 85C rear dump trucks is then outlined, concen- trating on wheel camber, wheel alignment, truck speed, tyre pressure, loading and haul road design. T T.1TUnilhTPTTnAT The Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty. Limited mines and beneficiates sedimentary manganese ores from a series of orebodies occurring in the western part of the island. The island is one of a group on the western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 50 kilometres from the Arnhem Land coast and about 650 kilometres from Darwin. Whilst capacity of the mine is presently 2.3 mil- lion tonnes of product per annum, current production has been reduced to just more than half this figure, due to a general mar- ket recession.
