Some twelve months of operation at Mount Lyell, using two large diameter ball mills as a two-stage grinding circuit indicated a short- fall in the grinding capability compared with design criteria. Breakage, particularly at coarser sizes, was less efficient than with the previously used grinding circuit comprising a large number of smaller diameter mills. This paper describes both old and new equipment, puts forward the facts as they are presently known, and lists the attempts made to overcome the problem.

This paper describes a major ventilation study for the expansion of the El Teniente mine operated by Codelco, Chile. El Teniente is one of the world's largest under- ground mines. The design effort was under- taken in three stages and involved a partial mine ventilation survey with network simula- tion, detailed stope ventilation investiga- tions, and design of the entire mine ventila- tion circuit based on production plans to achieve 112,000 tons per day by 1995. The partial ventilation survey provided values of representative friction factors and resistances for typical ventilation raises and airways. These values were used to conduct detailed modeling of the block caving levels to investigate the most cost effective and practical means of providing the required ventilation. The results of these analyses were extrapolated to the proposed expanded mechanized zones.

For nearly two decades water scientists have been debating the need to use appropriate models for the questions being asked and the data available. This paper puts forward a rationale for a hierarchical framework for water balance modelling as it applies to mine sites. The hierarchy is based on the complexity of models and their data requirements. Scientific models are the most complex and require the most data; next is engineering models, then systems models and the simplest representations are given by conceptual models. A position is put forward that systems models have a range of uses that the others do not provide. A systems model, called SiteMiser, is described and its calibration illustrated. The model is applied to seven coal mines from the Northern Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Currently, there is little relationship between total water use and coal production. This relationship is not any stronger when fresh (raw) water is compared to reused water. Leading practice water use levels are simulated for all sites. The simulation results demonstrate that there is considerable opportunity to reduce water consumption and, in particular, to import less fresh (raw) water to the sites.

Three key areas of C.I.P. plant design, viz. leach- ing time, adsorption and the gold loading on the carbon, are discussed and illustrated with examples. The need for accurate pilot plant data for use in assessing and optimising design is emphasized. This approach should minimize capital and maximise return on capital. It is demonstrated that, as regards adsorption, economics favours short retention time, high gold loadings and mechanically agitated, draft tube reactors. INTRODUCTION Little attempt appears to have been made in Australia to design the present generation of C.I.P. plants to achieve an economic optimum. Most would, seem to have been based on pre- liminary leaching data, gold extraction and value and rule of thumb which, in general, has led to over design and over capitalisation. An essential step to effective economic design is a comprehensive pilot plant study to establish definitive operating parameters, yields and reagent costs. HAPPENING to be in Cue recently the writer was unexpectedly called upon to make surveys of some diamond drill bores on the Big Bell mine on the Murchison goldfield. The owner of the mine Mr Herman Mandelstam. had brought such apparatus with himas he could lay his hands on. and no other was available without prohibitive delay.The usual method of making these surveys as is well known is by putting a glass tube half filled with gelatine or glue in a melted state down the hole with a small magnet freely suspended in the glue and having it there till the glue sets solid. When this tubeis withdrawn (its depth down the bore being noted) the bearing and inclination of the borehole at this particular point can be read - the bearing by the compass and the inclination by the angle between the tube and the surface of the glue which of course ishorizontal. By taking a number of these observations according to the degree of accuracy required the course of the bore can be fairly accurately plotted.In dealing with dry holes there is little trouble but when the holes are full of water great difficulty is experienced. In the case in point the first observation was made in water 300 ft. deep, corresponding to a pressure of 130 lb. per sq. in. The tube containing the gelatine and glue (a mixture was used) was found, when hauled to the surface, to be completely filled with a weak mixture of water, gelatine, and glue and there was no horizontal surface from which to measure the angle of inclination of the bore. The water had been forced through the corks and sealing wax with which the tube had been closed. After several attempts it became obvious that no method available would keep the water from getting into the air-space in the tube, and to a pressure-proof metal container was impossible, nothing remained but to do away with the air-space and this was accomplished by using two liquids of different specific gravity - mercury and melted glue. Natroalunite is one of colouring minerals in kaolin. In this investigation, natroalunite, on which Ca(II) was adsorbed, was flocculated by HPAM and kaolin was depressed in suspension. The adsorption of Ca(II) on the natroalunite surface was studied by zeta-potential measurement and Auger Electron Spectroscopy analysis. Ca(II) was adsorbed more on the natroalunite surface than on the kaolin surface. The mechanism of Ca(II) adsorption was considered to be chemical adsorption on natroalunite and to be physical adsorption on kaolin. It has been found that Na6P6O18 and Na2Si04 can strongly affect Ca(II) adsorption on the surface of kaolin, but weakly on the surface of natroalunite. The effects of degree of hydrolysis and the molecular weight of HPAM, the effect of pH and the effect of Ca(II) have been studied. The kaolin ore, containing SO3 1.05 per cent has been processed with this method. The products only containing S03 0.36 per cent and the weight ratio of concentrate 52.27 per cent were Obtained.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Tuwu-Yandong Cu deposit, located in the East Tianshan mountains in the eastern section of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is the largest and economically most important porphyry Cu deposit in Xinjiang, China. It contains ~3 Mt of copper at an average grade of 0.46 per cent Cu and 0.2 g/t Au, with significant amounts of Mo and Ag. The deposit is mainly hosted in the Carboniferous Qi’eshan Group and plagiogranite porphyry, and is controlled by faults that are east–west-, north-west- and north-east-trending. Ore minerals in the Tuwu-Yandong deposit are dominated by pyrite, chalcopyrite and molybdenite, with minor bornite, chalcocite, magnetite, sphalerite and galena. Gangue minerals are mainly composed of quartz, sericite, chlorite, epidote, anhydrite, gypsum, muscovite, biotite, phosphorite, sphene, dolomite, actinolite, barite, albite and calcite. Based on the megascopic and microscopic textural relationships and mineral assemblages, five stages of hydrothermal alteration and hypogene mineralisation are recognized in the Tuwu-Yandong Cu deposit: the potassic stage, propylitic stage, phyllic stage, late veins stage and supergene stage. The current boom being experienced by mining, coupled with a shortage of professionals, will mean those in the industry will have many choices. It may be easy to become carried away and run with the highest bid or the biggest promise. Without planning, however, the ærightÆ opportunity may be missed and there may be some long-term consequences. There are many choices of paths in the industry to suit work preferences, life cycles and to achieve a balanced life. People in mining have changed jobs and companies frequently û which means new leaders need to take greater responsibility in charting their own direction. Career options need to be carefully assessed and aligned to personal values and preferences. Emphasis is given on gaining site experience early on.This paper examines strategies for career planning, which incorporate life cycles, education and what is meant by a balanced lifestyle. Two tools are identified as being helpful in ensuring strategies can be successfully executed. They are ævisioningÆ and æinfluenceÆ.To make the mining industry more attractive, we need more creative solutions around advances in technology and organisation of work. It also needs the input and leadership of new entrants in to the industry to assist in its survival. New leaders are encouraged to voice a vision and effectively influence their companies. New leaders have little authority and need to learn how to effectively influence. We as a mining industry need to listen, be open-minded and give it a go.

Mining is a high risk, high capital and potentially high reward undertaking. A large proportion of the risk comes from a lack of definition of the orebody (which also provides some of the potential) and the unpredictable nature of the market. This makes the planning process difficult but encourages the development of a robust yet flexible mining system. The system should be capable of absorbing some deviation from the anticipated concept without a significant impact on profitability. The mine planning process tends to consist of a series of related but discrete stages. For instance, the pit shells are designed, a schedule for the pit shells is created, a plant fleet is chosen to achieve the schedule and a financial analysis is carried out on that scenario. It is likely a few iterations are carried out using various mill throughputs to produce a favoured financial result. The problem is that handing results from stage æBÆ for use in æCÆ doesnÆt encourage a flexible system. æCÆ is likely to be built for exactly æBÆ. Unfortunately, in mining, æAÆ (the orebody) has the highest potential for variability and impacts everything else downstream. æDÆ the market also has high potential for unplanned variability. These variations can spread and æreverberateÆ through the whole mine process. For example an unexpected increase in ore oversize impacts all downstream mine processes to the primary crusher which may in turn create problems back æupstreamÆ by restricting throughput rate. Also an unexpected drop in demand or price could require modifications to the planned production rates. This paper looks at how mining process simulation can be used to support the development of strategies to counteract unforseen circumstances or alter production to match fluctuations in demand and price.

Astute exploration on the northern Minahasa Peninsula, North Sulawesi, resulted in the discovery of the Toka Tindung, Pajajaran, Blambagan and Araren low-sulphidation quartz-adularia vein and stockwork gold-silver deposits. Combined, these deposits have estimated mineral resources in excess of I Moz gold at an average grade of 2.8 gAu/t and 7 gAg/t and are known as the Toka Tindung Gold Project. Gold typically occurs as fine grained electrum and is often associated with acanthite. The structurally controlled mineralised veins are hosted by Late Pliocene plagioclase and pyroxene-phyric basaltic andesite volcaniclastics and flows which form part of the Early Miocene to Pleistocene Sulawesi-East Mindanao Arc. Silica-adularia alteration dominates the volcaniclastic host of the Toka Tindung deposit. K-Ar dating of vein adularia indicates a 2.16 ¦ 0.04 Ma mineralisation age. Relatively narrow envelopes of silicification and argillisation surround the chalcedonic silica, quartz and adularia veins, stockworks and breccias at the other three deposits. Remnant hydrothermal breccias, chalcedony and anomalous arsenic, antimony and mercury indicate these gold deposits were part of a mineralised geothermal system.As of June 1997, Aurora Gold Ltd is finalising a feasibility study on exploitation of the four deposits and treatment of ore through a centrally located conventional CIP plant. Subsea tailings disposal is anticipated. Favourable metallurgy of the ore and logistics of the project area assist in minimising capital requirements.

Mining Engineering Degree programs have traditionally had a practical emphasis and have been highly vocational in nature. However, over the years, there has been an increasing attention to the more scientific aspects of the discipline. More recently, the professional institutions, the industry and the community at large have placed increasing emphasis on the broader aspects of the professions: management, finance, humanity, environment and social issues. Notwithstanding this, there has been a continuing emphasis on the practicalities, and most Mining Engineering programs are still strongly vocational in nature. But employers of new graduates complain about the graduatesÆ lack of practicality and readiness for employment æat the sharp endÆ on the mine site.This paper briefly describes some of the more recent developments in the Mining Engineering Degree program at the University of Queensland that attempt to address the problem. Particular attention is paid to alternative learning programs, including applications of virtual reality, practical experience at the University Experimental Mine (UQEM), and the Undergraduate Site Learning Program (USLP).

Embankment dams constructed mainly of sand or non-plastic fine soils are susceptible to liquefaction, particularly in high-rainfall, high-seismicity environments where there is sufficient water to saturate the materials and sufficient energy from an earthquake to cause liquefaction. This paper shows the process adopted to review the stability of an existing cross-valley, centreline-raised cyclone tailings sand embankment dam.The study showed that two-dimensional stability analyses did not sufficiently capture the potential for instability, overestimating the depth of the critical failure surface. Instead, three-dimensional modelling was required to provide a reasonable representation. Post-liquefaction stability analyses carried out using the three-dimensional model indicated an adequate factor of safety (FoS). The FoS under seismic conditions was still considered to be a concern based on pseudostatic analyses (but noting the limitations of the analysis method).Earthquake-induced settlements were estimated using an empirical approach based on case history records (Swaisgood, 2003). The post-earthquake event settlement was estimated to be in the order of 600 mm, which is considered to be acceptable for the embankment, taking account of the proposed long-term freeboard of more than 8 m under operating conditions and 2 m under the probable maximum flood condition.CITATION:Chapman, P J, Wrench, B P and Gowan, M J, 2015. Dust derived from mining and handling of ore has been identified as a major concern for the mining industry in Australia and may be critical to the future viability of some resource industries (CSIRO, 1999). Operational techniques to derive accurate measurements of anthropogenic dust on vegetation and infrastructure are necessary for the long-term management and monitoring of the environment surrounding mining operations. Airborne hyperspectral VNIR-SWIR systems can potentially provide these monitoring data. This paper outlines a method developed for deriving quantitative measurements of dust quantity on mangroves using remotely-sensed airborne hyperspectral data. The results show that it is possible to detect and quantitatively map iron oxide dust distribution using properly calibrated airborne visible to short wave infrared (VNIR-SWIR) data.

"Predictive geometallurgical models are being developed for the Productora Cu-Au-Mo deposit based on geochemistry to reflect variability in Cu species based on Cu sequential leach data (ie oxide, transitional-oxide, transitional-sulfide, sulfide and non-recoverable Cu).Productora, located in the coastal range of northern Chile, is a magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccia-hosted, structurally controlled Cu-Au-Mo deposit hosted by a thick sequence of Jurassic rhyodacitic volcanic rocks. North and north-west striking fault sets control the distribution of mineralised breccias. Alteration is widespread, complex and pervasive. Hypogene alteration assemblages range in composition from distal magnetite-amphibole, to sodic-calcic, to sodic, to phyllic, to proximal potassic. Low-temperature advanced argillic assemblages are locally juxtaposed next to proximal high-temperature K-feldspar-tourmaline assemblages. The dominant hypogene Cu phase is chalcopyrite.A simple Cu species classification scheme based on sequential leach data and S per cent was devised to account for non-recoverable Cu (ie non-sulfide Cu), which is insoluble in weak acids. Through machine learning, a proxy for this Cu species classification scheme was developed based on: depth, Ca per cent, Cu per cent, Fe per cent, K per cent, Mn ppm, S per cent and Ln(Cu/S) plus logged regolith class, thus allowing classification to be extended to areas of the deposit where no sequential leach data are available. The modelled data has been used to generate deposit-wide 3D models for Cu species classification.The validity of the proxy Cu species classification model is being tested against the results of flotation analysis. The man in the street (and no doubt most members of the Institute) thinks of wire, if he gives it any thought at all, as a most commonplace commodity. It is an accepted necessity, and like most necessities is taken for granted, unless a shortage in one or other of its multitudinous forms or products causes inconvenience.For many years Australia has ·been a large consumer of wire, particularly for fencing. With the rapid development of secondary industry the demand has increased in both size and character until at the present time much of the wire produced in this country is used as raw material for subsequent manufacturing processes. The call has been of so varied a nature that the Newcastle Wire Mills now turn out a greater variety of wire types than any other single plant in the world.In this paper, the aim is to provide a picture of the manufacturing, properties, and uses of wire. No attempt is made to cover the subject in any detail, as the field is much too broad for anything other than general treatment. Many phases, particularly in regard to manufacturing processes, are, therefore, dealt with cursorily, but it is hoped that the paper will, without delving too deeply into the technical aspects of Wire production, give a general appreciation of:- (a) How steel wire is made. (b) The remarkable physical characteristics obtained by judicious combination of chemical composition, heat treatment, and subsequent cold work. (c) The uses of steel wire.HISTORY.Best known of the early references to wire is that appearing in Exodus, where mention is made of gold wire being used for the sacerdotal robes of Aaron. However, the period in question, about B.O. 1491, is comparatively modern history as far as wire is concerned, for specimens believed to have been made about B.O. 4600 have been found. In the narrow stopes of South African gold mines, rockbreaking is carried out by drilling and blasting with safety fuse and igniter cord being used as the initiation system. The fuse/gniter cord system is used primarily because of its low cost, however several limitations of this method include: inaccurate delay time, unreliable firing, inflexible application to varied configurations, and the absence of dynamic interaction between holes. Alternative initiation systems that incorporate millisecond timing are being developed to overcome the limitations of fuse(tgniter cord systems. Current investigations by the Stoping Technology Division of the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) into the effects of millisecond initiation are being conducted at a deep test site. Experimental blasts using various millisecond delays and the independent firing of holes with fuse/igniter cord are being studied in order to quantify the influence of delay time on the blasting process and to identify the best methods of applying millisecond initiation systems. The effect of design variables such as delay time, hole firing pattern, stemming, and panel layout are discussed. Blast results including throw distance and direction, muckpile profile and rock cleaning times are used in the discussion of different combinations of blasting variables.

This paper aims to provide the reader with an insight into the field of computer graphics and Virtual Reality (VR), and show how both have been applied to the general area of Free Steered Vehicle (FSV) operations underground. It first explains this developing computer technology and explains its advantages over existing CAD based solutions. This paper deals with the graphical applications and implications of building models within a computer's memory. It then continues to describe the problems with Free Steered Vehicle operations. The work already carried out in the field of VR is explained, and the production of a VR system addressing the problems with fitting cameras to aid the driver's field of view is detailed. Another possible use of VR is also explained - the concept of risk regions, demonstrating its uses in the examination of proposed operational methods. Examples of possible uses are given, and its potential advantages over existing methods discussed. A case study of a computer-generated video involved with the safety of operations of FSVs is also presented. This addresses the precautions that pedestrians should take to ensure safe working in areas where FSVs are operating. This paper then concludes with possible further applications for computer graphics and VR, and the on-going research into these two technologies.

INTRODUCTIONDuring the past few years there has been considerable interest in developing the so-called direct reduction processes for treating iron oxides. The various methods proposed were recently reviewed by Scortecci and Palazzi (1960).In particular the application of fluidized bed techniques received considerable attention and, on first examination, this seems to be the ideal method 'of dealing with fine iron oxides. Several difficulties (e.g. product agglomeration) require the method to be investigated further before its potentialities can be fully assessed.PROPOSED FLUIDIZED BED REDUCTION PROCESSESBrassert and De Jahn (1951) were among the earliest to suggest the use of fluidized beds for the reduction of iron ore to metallic iron. Their patent was followed by many others proposing similar concepts, mainly from Lewis (1955), Ogorzaly (19.56), Shipley (1956), Agarwal (1960'), Osborn (1958), Texaco Development Corporation (1956) and Stelling (1957).The H-iron process (Squires and J ohnson, 1957; Lubker and Bruland, 1960) is the only scheme that has been an economic success. Natural gas from the south west Queensland gas fields is now available in north west Queensland to fuel the development of many Carpentaria Mineral Province projects. Like these projects, the south west Queensland gas project, developed under the operatorship of Santos Ltd, has its own æMining CycleÆ. While the project is entering its third expansion phase, it is at the same time actively extending its discovery phase, with large programs of gas exploration and reserves definition. This paper outlines the history of the south west Queensland gas project, with particular emphasis on the relationship of the project to north west Queensland.

During 1979 the writer had the privilege of interviewing about 50 people with varying degrees of involvement in the industrial arena and all of them in one way and another, had a part to play in the huge and intricate saga of Australian employee relations. They fell into the following' categories Industrial Relations Officers/Managers Academics Politicians Union Officials Representatives of Employer Associations Senior Industrialists Commission Members (State and Federal) Sundry (Journalists, Government Officials). This paper seeks to give an account of their views on various aspects of industrial relations. The interviews conducted were all on a personal and confidential basis so it can be expected that sources will not be identified. Suffice it to say that this account represents, albeit in "potted" form, the opinions of some of the most experienced individuals in the country. It will be seen that in most of the vital areas there is a remarkable lack of consensus. It should be noted that this lack of consensus existed within each of the groups mentioned.
