Mr. H. W. GEPP said he desired to bring particular attention to this paper. The underlying intention of the Development and Migration Commission when the paper was prepared was to place at the disposal of Australian miners and metallurgists the story of the development of tin metallurgy as it had been advanced in other countries, particularly Great Britain. They had very considerable resources of low-grade tin-bearing metals in the eastern coast of Australia particularly, and they need not anticipate that tin was going to remain at the extremely low price at which they saw it to-day. The Commission felt that it was most desirable to place 'on record, and make easily available, the story of the treatment of comparatively low-grade tin ores in other parts of the world.Arrangements were made that the technical staff at Australia House, in conjunction with Mr. H. S. Elford; should collect this information so that in due course, when Australia awoke to an interest in low-grade deposits, of which there were many throughout Australia, this story would then not,have to be gathered from other areas and other places of the world. The -paper was a contribution which would turn out to be of very great value. He suggested to the younger members that this thorough contribution could be made the subject of study so that they would be ready to assist in the developments which must come. Mr. WM. APLIN said there was one point in connection with the paper upon which he would like to speak. The following paper on the development of processes for the treatment of crude ore, accumulated dumps of tailing and slime at Broken Hill, has been prepared by a committee of the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, with the object of recording, in chronological order, the developments of the various processes which have led up to the metallurgical practice of the present day.

Australia has many potentially important tin deposits, particularly on the eastern shore of the continent and in Tasmania. A number of these have been worked on a meagre scale, while some of them, because of metallurgical, transport, and other difficulties, have not as yet been developed.Believing that the full development of the tin fields of the Commonwealth of Australia is in part dependent upon the adoption of the most efficient methods of milling and smelting, the Development and Migration Oommission arranged for the first-mentioned author to visit the mining fields of Cornwall, one of the oldest tin-producing districts of the world, and prepare a report for the information of the Commission.This paper, now presented to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy with the hope that it will assist the full development of tin mining in Australia, is the joint work of both authors.For over two thousand years tin has been produced from the Cornish mines. Even the ancient Greek historians made mention of tin mining in Cornwall, and it is probable that during the earliest periods the mining was alluvial. As early as 1602 a stamp battery working in Cornwall was described, and in 1671 calcination and buddling was a recognised scheme of treating pyritic ore. In the first half of the 16th century the output of tin from Cornwall was 700 tons per annum, and, from then on, production increased to the maximum in 1914 of 6500 tons. At present (Oct., 1929) the Cambourne-Redruth area produces over 95% of the Cornish tin output. This area includes such mines as the South Crofty, East Pool, Dolcoath, Parkanchy, Polhigey, and Wheal Kitty. The remaining 5% is largely supplied by the Levant and Geevor mines at Pendeen, St. Just area, near Land's End.

THE John Darling Colliery, owned by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, is situated 12 miles south of Neweastle, NSW and about 1 mile from the ocean. The area of the holding is approximately 10,000 acres, about half of which underlies the Pacific Ocean. The area was proved to be coal bearing by diamond drill boring: this method not only proved the coal to exist, but gave the depths from which could be calculated. It also proved the existence or otherwise of heavy faulting, which is a very important factor in the design of the underground lay-out of a mine. The location of shafts had to be carefuIly studied, and, before final selection, the following salient points had to be considered:Railway communications.Flood waters.Boiler feed water.Surface buildings.Probability of coal washing.Underground haulage arrangements.Lengths of roadways from a ventilating viewpoint.Before the shaft sites were finally selected, an underground design was prepared to determine the direction of the main drives in relation to the boundaries of the holding, and the of the coal seam: the latter, being an important factor in this particular locality, was ascertained by a geological survey of rock outcrops in the neighbourhood. HAPPENING to be in Cue recently the writer was unexpectedly called upon to make surveys of some diamond drill bores on the Big Bell mine on the Murchison goldfield. The owner of the mine Mr Herman Mandelstam. had brought such apparatus with himas he could lay his hands on. and no other was available without prohibitive delay.The usual method of making these surveys as is well known is by putting a glass tube half filled with gelatine or glue in a melted state down the hole with a small magnet freely suspended in the glue and having it there till the glue sets solid. When this tubeis withdrawn (its depth down the bore being noted) the bearing and inclination of the borehole at this particular point can be read - the bearing by the compass and the inclination by the angle between the tube and the surface of the glue which of course ishorizontal. By taking a number of these observations according to the degree of accuracy required the course of the bore can be fairly accurately plotted.In dealing with dry holes there is little trouble but when the holes are full of water great difficulty is experienced. In the case in point the first observation was made in water 300 ft. deep, corresponding to a pressure of 130 lb. per sq. in. The tube containing the gelatine and glue (a mixture was used) was found, when hauled to the surface, to be completely filled with a weak mixture of water, gelatine, and glue and there was no horizontal surface from which to measure the angle of inclination of the bore. The water had been forced through the corks and sealing wax with which the tube had been closed. After several attempts it became obvious that no method available would keep the water from getting into the air-space in the tube, and to a pressure-proof metal container was impossible, nothing remained but to do away with the air-space and this was accomplished by using two liquids of different specific gravity - mercury and melted glue. "DEEPHOLE " or "Longhole" drilling is the name given to the drilling of prospecting holes with the pneumatic hammer drill. The drilling bit is of the same form, and is prepared in the same way as ordinary rock drill steel, and is extended to the bottom of the hole by sectional hollow rods, through which water is forced.The cuttings from the hole provide a sample of the ground drilled.Deephole drilling was developed at an American mine where the cost of diamond drilling, owing to loss of diamonds, was excessive, and proved very successful, holes being drilled as deep as 220 ft., in limestone, at a cost of one dollar per foot. The use of the method in other mines, and in a variety of rocks, has since been described in the technical literature. From the published descriptions the following data are drawn:

FOR some time it has been recognised by the Metallurgical Staff that the presence of pyrite in the ore was adversely affecting the grades of the flotation concentrates.Following experimental work, it was decided to change over from the acid circuit in the mill to an alkaline circuit. The following description sets out the procedure adopted, -and the results obtained when such change-over was made.The Zinc Corporation ore consists mainly of galena, marmatite, calcite, and quartz, with smaller quantities of pyrite, fluorspar, and rhodonite.A clean specimen of marmatite picked from the ore assayed 53.4% zinc, and 10% iron, with no lead or insoluble. However, as zinc concentrates have been, at times, produced in the plant assaying over 53% zinc, and with only 8.7% iron, apparently the picked specimen of marmatite did not represent an average composition.The average would probltbly be between 8 and 9% of iron, and from 53.5 to 54.5% of zinc. It is obvious, therefore, that from this ore it is not possible to produce zinc concentrate of a higher grade than this average figure.In the Colorado School of Mines Quarterly for April, 1928, Vol. 23, No. 2, on page 47, we find the following statement:As the zinc in the ore exists as marmatite, which contains approximately 54.5% zinc and 10% iron, 49% zinc in the concentrate may be considered high.This statement refers to the ore treated in the Sullivan concentrator, owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited.

SITUATED in the county of Manchcster, in Northern Eyre's Peninsula, the Iron Knob ore-deposits form the basis of the industry. These deposits are connected by the Iron Knob tramway to the port of Whyalla, aal miles distant, on the western shore of Speneer Gulf,and to-day another tramway is under construction to link up with the same port, a second group of iron ore leases known as Iron Baron, which is situated 18 miles south of Iron Knob. Fig. 1 indicates the geographical relationship of these three places, Iron Knob, Iron Baron, and Whyalla, which together comprise this field of the company's activities.

Mr. P. F. THOMPSON said this matter was one of very great importance to producers of lead. His association with the matter was that he happened to be the Institute representative on the Committee of the Standards Association of Australia charged with formulating a standard for chemical lead, that is, lead used in technical chemistry for acid chambers and the like. The British standard had this test incorporated in it, but those on the committee felt that it should not be included in the specification. The main objection was that in an accelerated corrosion test one was endeavouring to do in a few seconds what in natural conditions would take years; and it was now being recognised that such tests were of little value in assessing the corrosive properties of a metal.The flash point test was carried out with boiling hot strong sulphuric acid; but no chemical manufacturer would be likely to use such in contact with lead. There were many factors such as the formation of steam, the chemical reduction of sulphuric acid, the evolution of hydrogen, the catalytic effect of the surface lead, affecting this test, other than the presence of the segregated impurities upon which this test throws the onus of the whole imperfection of the lead. Mr. Russell had shown that lead which had stood the test of time often gave a low flash point. They were endeavouring to find rapid methods of estimating minute amounts of the more important impurities, which would eliminate the labour and expense of a full analysis.Mr. H. St. J. IF lead be heated with concentrated sulphuric acid two distinct actions will usually be observed. In the first, bubbles begin to be evolved more or less rapidly from the lead, and in the second, which occurs at a higher temperature than the first, hydrogen and sulphur dioxide are evolved, free sulphur is liberated, and leadsulphate is formed. The second action may be violent and usually continues till the lead is all consumed.Attempts have been made to apply these reactions, by means of a standard procedure, as a "Flash test" for the acid resisting qualities of chemical sheet lead. THE South Mine. owned by the Broken Hill South Limited, occupies mineral leases 7 and 8 on the Broken Hill lode. The ore reserves are 4,250,000 tons, and the ore hauled for the year ended June, 1930, was 387,000 tons, the total to date being 7,840,000.The mine, down to the 1070-ft. level, is naturally divided into two sections, the northern and southern ends. Ore extraction is practically completed in the northern end to this horizon, while the southern end is developed ready for a concentrated attack.Fig. 1 shows the state of the 8215-ft. level, after connection to the new shaft.The levels above and below to the 1070-ft. level are in a similar condition, while below the 1070-ft. level the stoping has been confined to the north end, but not completed. The south end on these levels is also partially developed.The ore at present is hauled up No. 1 shaft, which is centrally situated to the present workings. This shaft was put into use in 1909, and in 20 years has had approximately 5,000,000 tons of ore pulled through it.The company, having proved the existence of large ore-bodies in the southern end of the mine, decided to sink No. 7 shaft. This is a six-compartment frame-set shaft (see Fig. 2) equipped with two cages and two 5-ton skips, the remaining compartments being utilised for electric cables, pipes, and ladders. The surface arrangements will include a steel head frame, electric winders, and breaker station.

BECAUSE of the attention given in recent years to the flotation process, there is an extensive range of equipment available to any staff detailed for: the design of a flotation mill. This statement applies not only to the flotation machines, but also to equipment for crushing and grinding, elevating the pulp, dehydrating of concentrates, and the methods of driving the various equipment.Distributed through the Proceedings and Transactions of various metallurgical societies and journals there are many excellent descriptions of flotation mills, their equipment and performance.Whilst these articles describe-in many cases in detail-the equipment in the mills to which they refer, the reasons which govern the choice of each particular equipment are not usually given.

The Bradford Process, Australian Patent No. 11253, has had considerable application in the treatment plants of Broken Hill mining companies, and is at present being used by the North Broken Hill Limited for the treatment of weathered slime accumulations.The "Mining and Scientific Press," of 28th September, 1918, describes the Bradford Process at Broken Hill, specially featuring its application to slime material at the Proprietary mine-the home of the process.The points then stressed for galena flotation were acidulated slime pulp (0.025 to 0.030% H2S04) at temperature 85° to 90° F. and suitable time contact, with 1.5 to 2 lb. of sodium hyposulphite (per ton on slime) to permit the released S02 to "wet" or depressthe blende mineral. Also 1.0 to 1.3 lb. of crude sulphur (per ton on slime) was burnt, to supply S02 for keeping the lead concentrate clean during flotation. Pulp density varied from 23 to 26% solids. Since 1918 the process has been simplified in its application.Acidity of circuit, temperature, and sodium hyposulphite have been dispensed with, and now the S02 is practically all obtained by burning crude sulphur. SINCE 1900, five underground fires of consequence have beenrecorded in the Broken Hill mines. These occurred at the Junction(1906), Proprietary (1906 and 1916), Block 14 (1906), and Centralmines (1923). All have been extinguished, but at an enormouscost; e.g., in the eleven months following on the 1923 Central mine fire the sum of £187,123 was expended in fire-fighting operations.To this series may be added others, as the South (1925) and British mine (1918) fires, which were extinguished before serious damage had resulted. All, however, have occurred within a period of 28 years, and in a district where spontaneous combustion, a prolific source of fire in the U.S.A., has been practically nonexistent. Therefore, definite fire risks exist in the underground workings of the Broken Hill mines, and, as a consequence, an active fire prevention policy is a necessity...

THIS tunnel, which is an adit 7000 ft. long, was undertaken by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Limited to connect its treatment works with the North Lyell mine at depth, with a view to effecting economies in transport and drainage. The work was carried out at high pressure throughout from both ends, and although the ground in the mine end was intensely hard, good progress was made, and driving was completed in less than fifteen months.The Mount Lyell mining field is situated in the west of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland, the only means of access being the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway which connects with the Government railway system of the State at Strahan, on Macquarie Harbour. The region is mountainous, and presents many difficulties to the road and railway engineer. The West Coast range running north and south in a succession of bold prominences, which rise up to 4000 ft. above sea-level, forms the backbone of the district, and on its foothills the Mount Lyell mines are situated. The care necessary to ensure a reliable estimate of average value from the individual values of a series of bore holes sunk in any alluvial deposit containing coarse gold was well exemplified in checking over the mining returns from a previously bored deposit in Central Otago, N.Z. While the working returns are always liable to vary considerably from bore values in any particular sub-section of an area, still, over any considerable area, the two must check within small limits, if profits are to be calculated and capital raised on the average value given by boring.The present figures have probably more value than those from, dredge returns since accurate measurements are difficult to obtain in irregular water-filled dredge paddocks, whereas in the case under review the paddock walls stood almost perpendicular, and, as the measurements were taken and checked in the empty rectangular excavation, the yardage estimate may be taken as substantially exact.NATURE OF DEPOSITThe area consists of a narrow valley deposit of fluvio-glacial origin, the original deposit having been eroded and the gold reconcentrated by post glacial rivers. The wash is between 80 and 90 ft. deep, and is formed in two distinct layers:(i.) The top layer from surface to 70 ft. or 80 ft. consists of about equal quantities of gravel mixed with glacial drift, and a small amount of clay. The gravel is typical discoid glacial stone of a maximum size of about 4 in. diam. by 1 in. thick, and consists of soft micaceous schist and laminated slate. This upper layer of wash contains no coarse gold whatever, and very little fine; indeed, in mining, the top 30 ft. is discarded without being passed over the boxes.(ii.) The lower layer of wash to bedrock is similar to the upper, except iihat it contains about 10% of larger discoid stone up to 12 in. diam. by It in. thick; 90% of the gold is concentrated in this bottom layer.

THE absence of any locality maps of the district of Morobe has been seriously felt by mining engineers engaged on the goldfields, and as it was evident at the beginning of operations that the administration would be unable to make good this deficiency, ascheme for making rapid traverses was worked out, and in all subsequent travelling the necessary records were kept for the construction of a reliable reconnaissance map of the Bulolo goldfield and its approaches (see Plate 1.). Since all the field work had tobe carried out without encroaching on primary duties, the compilation of sufficient data was a somewhat lengthy business. It was found that in this r;ough country a pedometer was useless, as it was impossible to calibrate it for the variation in length ofpace between climbing semi-precipices and walking over level country. Further, the native tracks "meander" so excessively that the only method of calculating air-line distance is by timing, and a knowledge of what the timing represents, and until a 10kg experience had been gained in the time taken to cover known distances in various types of-country, one could not feel competent to estimate sufficiently accurately. It was found that reliability could be attained only when walking at nearly top pace. Inregard to aeroplane traverses, results were reliable only when the air was fairly still.BEARINGSIn arriving at the bearing between main traverse points, the method used was to keep a "boy" about two chains- behind when marching and sight back on him, standing, at about two-chain intervals. THIS instrument, depends on the principle that, over a short period, the surfaee of a porous substance from which a liquid is evaporating receives the same amount of heat by conduction, convection, and radiation as it loses in the latent heat of the evaporating liquid. If, then, the amount of heat being received by a surface can be measured, the rate of evaporation can also be obtained. The Kata thermometer is also based on this principle differently applied.The instrument, as shown in Fig. 1, consists essentially of a thermometer with a sliding which is divided by three pointers into two equal parts which may be spaced so as to cover a distance of, for example, 5° of the thermometer scale. The instrument is calibrated so that the amount of heat required per unit area of the bulb to raise the menissus is known. The method of using the instrument is as follows:The slide is first set so that thc central pointer is at the temperature of the evaporating surface.The thermometer is cooled by any convenient means so that the meniscus is several below the lowest pointer. The thermometer is then placed near the evaporating surface, when the Ineniscus begins to rise and the time taken for it to rise from the lowest to the top pointer is measured. From this and the calibration results the amount of heat retained per unit area of the bulb at the mean temperature...

IT is intended herein: to make some brief comments on geophysical 'work in general and on the various methods, and then to refer to that branch which, perhaps, is of the greatest importance and interest to the metalliferous mining engineer, i.e., the variousmethods of electrical prospecting.The term geophysics was originally applied to those larger physical and geodetic studies and methods concerned with such purely scientific subjects as the investigation of the true figure of the earth and the determination of the stability relations resultingtherefrom. Applied geophysics and geophysical methods of prospecting are concerned primarily with the search for, and investigation of, useful mineral deposits concealed within the earth's crust and not readily detectable by the normal methods employed bythe mining geologist and prospector. The methods employed have been devised as a result of co-operation between mining men, geologists, and physicists, and, although steady progress has been made during the past 20 years or so, it is within the last four orfive years that the importance of these methods has been acknowledged by the mining world in general. Although many of these methods are still in, or have barely emerged from, the experimental stages, a steadily increasing list of important discoveries is attributable to their employment-more particularly in Europe and America than elsewhere. The various methods have each their own limitations regarding the class of work they can undertake, and no one method is capable of general application.
