A process utilizing ozone for the precipitation of cobalt from nickel sulphate liquors containing ammonium sulphate has been developed. Best results were obtained using nickel carbonate to maintain solution pH at 5.0 to 5.5. Work was performed both in column and stirred-tank reactors. Variables studied included neutralizer type and concentration, NH4+ concentration, temperature, Ni++ and Co++ concentration, per cent O3 in the O2 carrier gas, O3 input rate and agitation. The over-all rate of cobalt rejection increased sharply with increasing agitation and ozone concentration in the gas phase, reflecting relatively slow transfer of ozone from the gas to the liquid phase.

Introduction The property and plant of the Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is situated about 13 miles northeast from Sudbury, in Falconbridge township, near the eastern extremity of the southern Nickel Range. As early as 1899 or 1900 some work was clone on this property by the late Thos. A. Edison, when a shaft was sunk through 80 feet of overburden to within a few feet of the ore-body. At this point quicksand was encountered, which made it impossible to continue with the equipment at hand. As a result, the activities of the Edison party ceased in this section. There was no further progress until 1915 and 1916, when an extensive diamond-drilling campaign, carried out by the E. J. Longyear Company, located the ore-body that is now being worked. The property was acquired by the present operators in 1928, and in September of that year active mining development was commenced. Features Influencing Design Of Plant Early in 1929 plans were prepared for a smelter and the necessary crushing and sorting plant. In spite of the general trend towards the reverberatory furnace as a smelting unit, it was decided to erect a blast-furnace plant. The limited tonnage to be treated, of course, influenced this decision to a great extent. However, it was known that, with the proper procedure, extremely favourable results, both economic and metallurgical, could be obtained in blast furnace smelting. The possibility of very low slag losses, the simplicity of operation by the elimination of roasting plant, fuel plant, etc., the ability to handle coarse feed, and the lower initial cost, were considered factors in favour of the blast furnace. Notwithstanding the fact that we might be called on to treat a certain amount of concentrate, it appeared that the blast furnace was the proper unit for the contemplated operation.

The prominence of her mineral resources makes Canada a most fitting place in which to hold the Second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress, since in all probability the Dominion has more diversified mineral wealth than any other part of the British Empire. This paper is concerned with nickel, an important factor of Canada's mineral production. The richness and quantity of her nickel ores have made Canada the world's most important source of supply of the metal. Its history and diversified uses are, therefore, particularly interesting at this meeting. Early History Probably the first use of nickel by man was in the fashioning of implements, and later swords, from nickel-bearing meteorites, masses of metal that have fallen from time to time at many points on the earth's surface and which consist normally of iron carrying substantial amounts of nickel. Early History Probably the first use of nickel by man was in the fashioning of implements, and later swords, from nickel-bearing meteorites, masses of metal that have fallen from time to time at many points on the earth's surface and which consist normally of iron carrying substantial amounts of nickel. Meteorites were perhaps the first metal known to man. The falling star, sought out with fear overborne by curiosity, was found to be a better stone than the earth-given, truly a boon from the gods. Archeologists tell us there is good evidence that the ancient oriental peoples learned at an early date to make these stones into useful implements. The invincible blades of the great warriors of old in China, Persia, and in northern Europe, were Heaven-sent, a fable which sounds significant of meteoric iron. Probably some of the ancient swords of Khorassan and of Damascus were of meteoric nickel-bearing iron (1). Fifty centuries were to pass before men learned to isolate nickel and add it to iron to produce the same alloy for much the same purpose. Meanwhile, man had found another natural alloy of nickel, known first to the Chinese as paktong, or 'white copper.' It was obtained from complex copper-nickel sulphide ores of Yunnan in southern China. This metal was brought by caravan through India into Bactria, a country north of the Hindu-Kush mountains, in what is now known as Russian Turkestan. The earliest specimen extant is a Bactrian coin attributed to 235 B.C. The rough reddish-white metal was also sent in the form of triangular rings to Canton, where zinc ores were added and the whole smelted to a more malleable alloy, also known later as paktong. This alloy was the forerunner of German-or nickel-silver. Specimens of this alloy, wrought into ornamental candlesticks and boxes, were brought from Canton to Europe by the East India Company in the early days of the China trade. Paktong was highly prized for its beauty as well as its eastern origin in far-away China. By 1760 the unwrought metal was imported into England for domestic manufacture.

"Certain northern Saskatchewan uranium ores have a high content of nickel and cobalt which offer the potential for recovery as a by-product to uranium. A nickel/cobalt recovery process has been developed as a viable method of recovering a marketable concentrate from typical uranium raffinate solution.Impurities are first removed from the raffinate and the pure solution is then treated with sodium carbonate to recover a bulk nickel/cobalt carbonate precipitate for sale to a primary nickel producer. All contaminants of concern are removed to very low levels and the product is free of radioactive contamination with gamma emissions significantly below natural background. Cost estimates have shown that installation of a nickel/cobalt recovery circuit within a uranium process plant is economically feasible.The testwork that led up to the selected process is described along with recommendations for further investigations such as additional testing of hydroxide precipitation as a possible viable alternative to carbonate. The selected process is described and project economics are briefly reviewed.PROCESS TEST PROGRAMBackgroundExtensive metallurgical research has been performed over the years to develop a process for recovering uranium from the Midwest deposit in northern Saskatchewan. During the course of this research, a certain amount of information became available which suggested that recovery of nickel and cobalt from uranium raffinate could be economically feasible. It was decided to undertake a test program which would investigate methods of separating nickel and cobalt from radioactive and other metal contamination to permit production of a saleable product.Available technology suggested that three general approaches could be taken to recover nickel and cobalt. The first and simplest approach would be to selectively precipitate the impurities of concern, primarily arsenic, iron and radium, and then recover a bulk concentrate from the purified raffinate. The second approach would be to purify the raffinate and then remove cobalt from solution by solvent extraction producing pure nickel and cobalt solutions for further treatment. The third approach would be to precipitate all metals from solution and then selectively re-dissolve nickel and cobalt in ammoniac solution which would be further treated by solvent extraction for nickel recovery, leaving cobalt for further treatment."

Years before iron and steel works were established at Sydney, several thriving although short-lived iron works operated in Nova Scotia. These furnaces reflected the general nineteenth-century North American experience with iron works. At the beginning of the century, small furnaces struggled to supply local needs. Charcoal was the principal fuel and water powered most furnace equipment. By the end of the century, a few huge primary iron and steel works dominated production for Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada. Two sites achieved prominence in the nineteenthcentury Nova Scotia iron industry: Londonderry and Ferrona (Fig. 1). Londonderry, the larger and longerlasting of the two sites, is today a small village on the south flank of the Cobequid Mountains, about 30 km west of Truro. Prior to the establishment of an iron works in 1849, no community existed. At the peak of operation in the 1880s, however, over 2600 people were located there. The second site, Ferrona, today is a mere crossroads on the map, about 10 km south of New Glasgow. Following the construction of a blast furnace there in 1892, a small village grew up around the furnace. But once the furnace was blown out in 1904, the population gradually drifted away.

"In 1989, improved milling and recoveries resulted in a record production of 7 722 200 Ib Nb2P5 at the Niobec Mine. At the beginning of 1990, proven and probable reserves stood at 11 952 000 tons grading 0.65% Nb205. This year, the world steel market has slowed and as a result, niobium consumption is down. Consequently, production at the mine dropped 14% for the second quarter.IntroductionThe Niobec Mine is located approximately nine miles northwest of Chicoutimi, Quebec, (Fig. I). After ten years of production, the Niobec Mine is the only operating niobium mine in North America and the second largest producer of niobium in the world after Brazil.The Niobec Mine is a joint venture held equally by Teck Corporation and Carnbior. Teck Corporation operates the mine while Cambior is responsible for marketing and selling the niobium pentoxide concentrate (Nb2P5).The deposit was discovered in 1964 following an airborne radiometric survey in search of uranium. However, mining of the deposit did not begin until 1976. The initial production capacity of 1500 tons per day was increased several times to the present capacity of 2450 tons . The deposit is considered as an ample source of pyrochlore concentrate for at least 15 years at the present production rate.Niobium, also known as columbium, is a greyish-white metal used primarily as an alloy in various steels and other metals. The use of niobium in alloys heightens tensile strength and improves corrosion resistance while at the same time reducing the weight of the alloy. Niobium is also used in the fabrication of steel for the aerospace, automobile, and oil and gas pipeline industries. Although substitutes for niobium exist, their use often results in diminished performance and net cost increases."

"Niobium and tantalum are strategic metals for electronic and alloys industries. They are produced by pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy but most of the niobium and tantalum production processes are not environmentally friendly. For instance, in the hydrometallurgical route, niobium and tantalum separation can only be achieved by liquid-liquid extraction in the presence of hydrofluoric acid by taking advantage of the difference in niobium(V) and tantalum(V) speciation in fluoride-based media. Therefore, the environmental footprint of hydrometallurgical processes for the production of niobium and tantalum could be clearly lowered by replacing HF or NH4F by greener media such as alkaline solutions in which high solubility of niobium(V) and tantalum(V) can be achieved.The development of such new efficient and environmentally friendly hydrometallurgical processes requires a fine description of the physicochemistry of niobium(V) and tantalum(V) in alkaline solutions. Unfortunately, literature data show a huge discrepancy on niobium(V) and tantalum(V) speciation in such media. This paper gives a brief overview of the niobium(V)-tantalum(V) production processes and paves the way to the development of alternative processes in alkaline media by presenting and discussing recent advances in the physicochemistry of niobium(V) and tantalum(V) in these media.INTRODUCTIONNiobium and tantalum are strategic metals since they are used for the production of alloys and super alloys, capacitors and magnets in strategic industries such as electronic, aeronautics and automobile. The carbon steel casings of Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) in a co¬generation plant were found to have developed cracks that originated on the inside surfaces. The HRSGs receive hot exhaust gases from the primary Gas Turbines (GTs), which are fuelled with pipeline natural gas. The GTs was initially operating without any suppression of nitrogen oxides (NOx). After being in service for about two years, some of the cracks were found to have penetrated right through the 1/4 in. thick casings. The casings are fitted with insulation on the inside (hot gas side). Examination of steel samples cut from the casing walls revealed (i) fine cracks propagating through the steel from the inside surfaces, and (ii) the presence of relatively large amounts of nitrate ion on the inside surfaces. It was concluded that the nitrate ions originated from nitric acid that was condensing on the relatively cool walls of the casings behind the insulation. Nitric acid was formed in the GT exhaust gases by the combination of water vapour (formed from combustion of the hydrocarbon fuel and from moisture in the combustion air) and nitrogen oxides (formed from nitrogen and oxygen in the combustion air).

For stabilizing the production of containing nitrogen steels, a study on nitrogen absorption behavior of killed molten steel has been carried out by means of the RH vacuum device in which nitrogen was used as a driving gas. The results showed that there was an increase of nitrogen content in molten steel under vacuum processing but the rate of nitrogen absorption was slowed down by the surface active elements. Therefore, a kinetic equation for nitrogen absorption of molten steel with apparent first order reaction was derived by constructing a modified model in which the adsorption of closed surface site was taken into account. The experimental results confiimed that the calculated values agreed with the observed ones. This model is suitable for the prediction of nitrogen adsorption operation for containing nitrogen steels.

The levels of nitrogen in steel produced in various metallurgical vessels vary significantly. For example, the tap nitrogen levels in steel produced in the BOF are around 4Oppm, as compared to 70-100ppm in both DC and AC electric arc furnaces. Given the pressing need to reduce nitrogen levels in steel to satisfy customer demand, IPSCO Inc. has gained considerable experience in controlling nitrogen levels in steel over the course of the last three years. Hence, a cost effective process has been developed through an intensive nitrogen control program from steel melting in the EAF through to the continuous slab casting stage. This paper describes the practices employed at each stage of the steelmaking process that have enabled IPSCO Inc. to reduce and control nitrogen levels in steel.

Flotation collectors for sulfide minerals has been traditionally based on xanthate, thiophosphate, thiophosphinate and thiocarbamate, all derived from sulfur chemistry. Tecflote™ is a new family of patented collectors based on nitrile chemistry which can supplement or replace thiol collectors, depending on the ore types. A steep grade-recovery curve typical of Tecflote™ collectors was observed when using Tecflote™ as the main collector for the rougher and cleaner steps allowing a better recovery compared to current thiol collectors while maintaining the desired grade. Additional recovery increase has also been observed by the addition of scavenger steps using Tecflote™ collector in combination with current thiol-based collector. The selectivity seen in the lab is transferred to full scale trial and is clearly seen in the rough flotation where the increase in the rough concentrate grade of 5% after pumping Tecflote S11 directly into the tank cell. The mechanisms for Tecflote’s selectivity towards sulfides are currently under investigation and will be discussed. Results of TOF-SIMS analysis will be presented, demonstrating the collector’s selective affinity to different mineral surfaces in flotation. INTRODUCTION The history of collectors used today started in 1882 when Zeise first made xanthates. It was first used in flotation in 1925 – Cornelius Keller’s first patent (Fuerstenau, Jameson, Yoon, 2007). Between 1928 and 1930 American Cyanamid filed 7 patents for dithiophosphate, including flotation and chemical synthesis of the reagent, the first of which was filed by Christmann in 1928 (Christmann, 1933). Synthesize of thionocarbamates for mineral flotation was filed in 1954, by Dow Chemical Company (Harris, 1954). Now that the head grades have been declining over the last decades the need to find more selective collectors to extract difficult and complex ores has pushed the industry to look at different chemistries. Thiol collectors standard to the industry rely on the sulfur in the collector molecule to bond to the mineral surface. The electronic property of this group is modified by the adjacent chemical groups, such as additional S, P or N have the effect of changing the selectivity of the collector (Wills & Finch, 2016). In the case of xanthate the length of the hydrophobic group also has an effect on the selectivity with some minerals such that the ethyl xanthate is more selective against pyrite and pyrrhotite than the long chain xanthates (Wills & Finch, 2016).

THE PROPERTY of Aunor Gold Mines, Limited, consists of eleven claims, located in Deloro township, approximately three miles southeast of the town of Timmins. Production began in 1940 and currently the mine is operating at a rate of 485 tons per day. GEOLOGY AND MINE DEVELOPMENT The ore zone at Aunor occurs in altered lavas bounded on either side by soft talc-chlorite schist, locally known as 'soapstone'. The zone has a strike of N.80°E, dips 60° North, and varies in width from 0 to 250 feet. Within this zone the main orebody has a westerly plunge, away from the No. 1 shaft area (Figure 1). The mine is developed by a vertical three-compartment shaft from surface to the 3,082-foot horizon. Working levels are spaced at 125- foot intervals from the 625-foot to the 1,625-foot horizon, from which to tl1e 2,125-foot level the interval is 250 feet.

"The No. 6 orebody is located 6 miles from the main op.eration of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited and includes open-pit and primary gyratory crushing facilities. Ore is transferred by truck to the secondary crushing facility at the main plant. About 3,500 tons of ore per day are crushed to minus % in. and ground to 68 per cent minus 400 mesh in rod and ball mills for flotation feed. Conditioning and aeration precede rougher flotation, and four stages of cleaning bring concentrates to a grade of 42 per cent Pb + Zn + Cu. Middling products are reground and refloated in a secondary flotation circuit, producing a cleaner feed and a final tails product. Primary bulk concentrate is treated with sulphur dioxide and steam-heated to l 70°F and the majority of the gangue is floated off, leaving a product that assays 57 per cent combined Pb + Zn + Cu and is suitable for marketing. This material is thickened, filtered, dried and loaded into railway cars for shipment to the smelter. Reagent use on flotation is conventional, with many compromises in dosage required to maintain the recovery of lead and zinc in the most advantageous proportions. Many refinements in the flowsheet have been made since start-up in 1966, and more may be made as laboratory and plant testwork indicate possible improvements."

Introduction In 1937, the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, was carrying on an extensive exploratory diamond-drilling programme. Most of this drilling was done on the 4100 level, the lowest working level in the mine. One of the exploratory diamond-drill holes, at approximately 12,500 feet from the portal of the tunnel, encountered heavily mineralized stringers of chalcopyrite and sphalerite in silicified grey schist. The mineralization was encountered just to the hanging-wall of the green mottled schist at a point 350 feet south of the 4100 tunnel. To delimit this new orebody, drifts and cross-cuts were driven on 3500, 3800, and 4100 levels to the hanging-wall in the area of the projected mineralization. On the 3500 level, the top of the mineralized zone was encountered. The zone was thoroughly explored by drifting and diamond drilling. The mineralization, however, was not sufficiently concentrated to be of commercial grade. On the 3800 level, the zone was found to consist of disconnected stringers of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Drifting was continued to the west and a long lens-shaped area of grey schist containing fairly heavy stringers of chalcopyrite was delimited. This lens later proved to be very close to the top of the commercial mineralization of the No. 8 orebody. On the 4100 level, a diagonal cross-cut was driven to the footwall of the downward projection of the mineralized zone. Diamond-drill holes from this cross-cut indicated a zone of heavy mineralization. A drift was driven off the cross-cut parallel to the zone and some distance to the footwall of it. Further diamond drilling disclosed a mineralized zone approximately 300 feet long and 35 feet wide containing sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite. The foregoing development work indicated a fairly large lens of mineralization of sufficient concentration to be classed as ore between the 4100 and 3800 levels. To explore this mineralization at depth, long diamond drill holes, dipping at minus 57° and minus 80°, were planned from some point to the hanging-wall of the orebody. The 4100 level was not suitable for small development headings, due to wider gauge track and larger cars than on the levels above. Therefore, a raise was driven from the diagonal cross-cut on the 4100 level to a point some 70 feet above and just inside the footwall of the orebody. From the top of the raise, drifts were expanded east and west to delimit the ore zone. In addition, a long cross-cut was driven 350 feet to the hanging-wall, and drifts were opened east and west from the end of the cross-cut to provide diamond-drill stations for the exploration of the orebody at depth.

Abstract -Nodules of carbonaceous matter have been observed in several Archaean peraluminous granites adjoining the gold- and uranium-bearing Witwatersrand Basin. These nodules, which resemble solid bitumen, usually replace uraninite or uranothorite and are paragenetically late. They show many similarities to kerogen seams and nodules associated with the conglomerate horizons in the Witwatersrand Basin, including composition, maturation, intimate association with uraninite, and a late paragenesis. U-Pb isotope ratios for granite-hosted and Witwatersrand kerogens define a single, albeit somewhat diffuse, Pb-loss discordia suggesting an upper intercept age of circa 2300 Ma. Carbon isotope analysis indicates lighter ?13C values for the granite-hosted nodules than for the sediment-hosted kerogen seams. Raman spectroscopy indicates that granite-hosted kerogen is more highly ordered than Witwatersrand seam kerogen. A model is presented which links the granitoid­ and sediment-hosted organic matter to an event of oil generation in the Witwatersrand Basin circa 2300 Ma ago. Light hydrocarbons migrated through the sediments and into underlying/adjacent granitic rocks, undergoing polymerization and accumulation in response to radiation accompanying the presence of high-uranium phases.

These nodules, which resemble solid bitumen, usually replace uraninite or uranothorite and are paragenetically late. They show many similarities to kerogen seams and nodules associated with the conglomerate horizons in the Witwatersrand Basin, including composition, maturation, intimate association with uraninite, and a late paragenesis. U-Pb isotope ratios for granite-hosted and Witwatersrand kerogens define a single, albeit somewhat diffuse, Ph-loss discordia suggesting an upper intercept age of circa 2300 Ma. Carbon isotope analysis indicates lighter Ol3C values for the granite-hosted nodules than for the sediment-hosted kerogen seams. Raman spectroscopy indicates that granite-hosted kerogen is more highly ordered than Witwatersrand seam kerogen. A model is presented which links the granitoidand sediment-hosted organic matter to an event of oil generation in the Witwatersrand Basin circa 2300 Ma ago. Light hydrocarbons migrated through the sediments and into underlying/adjacent granitic rocks, undergoing polymerization and accumulation in response to radiation accompanying the presence of high-uranium phases.

The presence of high noise levels in many industries, together with the fact that countries are becoming increasingly concerned with the health of its citizens, has contributed to the importance of the problem of hearing loss. This problem has become the focus of scientific research, law and medicine, and the object of this thesis is to present the means whereby noise may be detected, with its resulting effects and possible means of control, in mining operations. 0BJECTIONABLE noise is a particularly prevalent by-product of the mining industry, and, al-though a dangerous noise level has been recognized, it is believed that at no time now, or in the future, will it be possible to enumerate a single over-all decibel figure at which hearing impairment will oc-cur. Individual susceptibility must be recognized in any study of occupational loss of hearing aimed at the setting of standards and criteria for industrial noise control.
