"Rare earth resources usually contain minor amounts of radioactive elements. The most widely recognised sources of radioactivity are associated with thorium and uranium. However, also present in the resources are isotopes of rare earth elements (REE) that are themselves radioactive, including lanthanum (La-138), lutetium (Lu-176) and samarium (Sm-147). These radioisotopes, as well as remnants of the natural thorium (Th-232) and uranium (U-238, U-235) decay series, can contribute to significant levels of radioactivity in mixed REE concentrates and in separated products. Levels such as these can present challenges for transport, transboundary movement, product storage, workers’ health and safety, as well as waste management issues at the facilities that separate out the individual REE’s. These are discussed in this paper. A particularly challenging radioactive isotope is Ac-227 (a decay product in the U-235 decay series). Actinium behaves chemically similar to lanthanides and hence normally concentrates with REE multi-element composites. Reliable analysis of Ac-227 is not widely available and the methodology required to deal with this challenge is briefly described. A principle reason for minimization of radioactive content throughout REE processing is restrictive specifications by concentrate purchasers in order to reduce waste management challenges. Approaches to the minimization of radioisotope content in REE concentrates and separated products are outlined in this paper."

"This paper focusses on what seem to be the leading indicators of prosperity in the minerals industry during this decade: the geographical distribution of deposits, environmental impact, capital allocation and acid consumption. There is a potential for meeting environmental criteria at a reasonable profit margin, but those with limited acid demand within economic range will face hard times to meet growing environmental concerns, resulting in additional mine closures. At the other end, those with old waste dumps who are thinking about smelting capacity additions will need capital influx at a much larger rate than ever before. All things considered, a change should be made in the way the world's copper reserves are computed, because there is a growing need to internalize these effects back to the ore blocks before a meaningful estimate of reserves becomes available.IntroductionThe copper industry has undergone several changes during the past decade, many of which were expected to take place because they rel1ect the economics of ageing mines. However, many others took place that shocked the industry because they were not completely under control. The focus of this paper is to rel1ect on those changes, and on market expectations for this decade that somehow depend on their impact.To review the prospects for new mine developments and expansions from an industry perspective to a full extent, it would be necessary to consider not only the deposits themselves, but also geographical constraints, environmental constraints, labour composition, technology development and use, the availability of capital, ownership issues, and integration within the industry. This paper, however, will concentrate on only some of the key elements that are believed to playa major role in shaping the market in the decade that has just begun. World copper refining tankhouse practices have been surveyed. This survey is a supplement to previous surveys that have been carried out in the 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2003. On a world basis, process technology trends include the further installation of automated electrode handling systems including permanent cathode systems, automatic anode preparation and cathode handling machines, section switches, fully automatic cranes and polymer concrete cells. General plant process control has increased with more automation of material handling in the copper refining tankhouse. The general trend for most greenfield copper refining projects remains in eastern Asia.

Increases in productivity and improvements in mining occupational safety and health are intrinsically linked. Over the past years, the German Hard Coal Mining Industry has been able to accomplish both: an increase in coal production and, at the same time, a significantly reduction of accidents. This success has been achieved by advances in technology, better organization and investment in people. Since 1990 productivity has more than doubled, while the total number of accidents has been reduced by more than 90%. Further development started initially with the mechanisation of the winning and drivage technology. Innovative technology and standardisation of the mining equipment were one reason for the increase in productivity and reduction of the accident rate. Therefore this technical development was not only one important pillar of the TOM model explicated later but also the requirement for the successful development of the other pillars. In addition to further developing this innovative technology it was possible to realise procedural and organisational improvements. As a result, the above achievement is based on implementing the three pillars of the so-called "TOM" model (technology, organization, ?Mensch? = human). To increase safety, improve performance, raise awareness and change of employees? attitude, the following technical and organizational requirements have been introduced: ??New innovative technology and procedures, standardized techniques and better equipment. ??Measures to revise or redefine the organizational structure, processes and systems of work, which were then integrated into the company policy and procedures as a company management tool. ??Personnel measures (investment in people). These include, improving motivation and behaviour, training, communication to raise and to change awareness of safety issues. Success in Occupational Health and Safety is not an automatic or self-regulating process. It needs hard work to make improvements and it must be treated as a recurring cyclic process. As a result of the above, occupational health and safety has become a natural part of daily work in the German Hard Coal Mining Industry. This could only be achieved by the unconditional "commitment" of all managers and employees to the issues, coupled with discipline and responsible action. Further improvements towards the ultimate aim of "zero" accidents are only possible by mutual involvement in implementing the ?TOM? (technology, organization and ?Mensch? human) model.

Frequently, costs overruns and defaults in mining project performance result in serious problems and headaches for all project participants and impact on corporate objectives, profits and image and, occasionally, lead to project failure. As mining professional s, we should be very concerned that, in a recent World Bank paper (Weber-Fahr, 2001), geological and technical risks were considered the most important ones facing mining projects. Whenever we manage to reduce or minimize these risks, we are in better position to overcome the environment-, market-, finance- and community-related ones. The causes of this situation seem rather systemic, as a fairly long list of industry problems with new pro jects has been described in industry papers in pas t and recent years. A brief review of industry problems with mining projects will be given first, followed by a review of the basics of the current Quality Management and Continuous Improvement perspectives that have evolved from earlier quality control and quality assurance systems and policies. Particular particular attention will be given to the work of W. E. Deming. As the system approach is an essential part of such policies, it will be described succinctly. Given that poor communications and interactions among geologists, mineral processors and mining engineers/operators ca n seriously affect project efficiency and profitability, these interrelated processes with in the mining systems will be analyzed and modelled and the impacts of such situations will be described through a number of anonymous case histories and examples. A synthesis of Dr Deming's management system, includ ing his Four teen P oints and System of Profound Knowledge, will be prese nted .

La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Différentes modifications ont été apportées aux dimensions et orientations des galeries, aux patrons de forage, aux techniques de sautages, au support de terrain, à la séquence de minage et aux méthodes de remblayage. "The distribution of mineralized provinces is analyzed on the basis of their genetic link with specific blocks of the earth's crust including ancient platforms, mobile belts and zones of tectonicmagmatic activation. Mobile and fold belts surround the Siberian platform in Russia and the Kaapvaal craton in South Africa, with decreasing age zoning away from ancient platform margins. The main differences in the geological development of the two cratonic areas are: (1) the long period before the final stabilization of the Siberian platform (3600 Ma to 1600 Ma) and the comparatively short period of time for the stabilization of the Kaapvaal craton (3600 Ma to 3050 Ma) and (2) the intensive multiple activation of the marginal zones of the Siberian platform and the tectonicallycontrolled, magmatic sedimentary, intracratonic activity, typical of the Kaapvaal craton. Mineralization of the Siberian platform is largely characterized by marginal reactivation zones of differing ages although mineralized intracratonic Cu-bearing basins of Proterozoic age are also known. Mineralization of the Kaapvaal craton is mainly related to the formation of the intracratonic basins i.e., Witwatersrand (Au, U) and Transvaal (Au). The latter is characterized by multi-age volcanic-intrusive activity including the emplacement of Bushveld Complex (Cu, Ni, Pt, Cr, Au, V). The Siberian platform is characterized by the prolonged development of inherited mineralization from Archean until the late Mesozoic. The main period of mineralization in the Kaapvaal craton is restricted to the middle Proterozoic.The Baykal-Patomskaya and Namaqua-Natal mobile zones occupy similar positions adjacent to the Siberian and Kaapvaal cratons, respectively, and demonstrate similar modes of metallogenic development: i.e., the early formation of exhalative Pb-Zn-Cu deposits during the early stage and magmatic Cu deposits during the late stage. The more remote mobile belt near the Siberian platform, the Trans-Baykal, is characterized by intensive multi-age mineralization (Wo, Mo, Sn, fluorite), related to a period of tectonic-magmatic activation. The Saldania Belt occupies a similar position near the Kaapvaal craton but is known for its poor Au, and Cu mineralization. It does, however, have some similarities with Trans-Baykal Belt in regard to Mo-W bearing granitoids.The phenomenon of interference of geosynclinal, orogenic, platform, and tectono-magmatic activation regimes is known for the Russian section of the Pacific Ocean Volcanic Belt."

INTRODUCTION THE electrical system associated with the mining development of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, at Flin Flon, Manitoba, may be conveniently divided into three main parts, namely, the Island Falls power plant, the transmission line, and the distribution systems at the mine and metallurgical plants. For a description of the Island Falls power plant and the transmission line, the reader is referred to the paper, to be presented at this meeting, by R. W. Davis and M.F. Huffaker (1). The transmission line and sectionalizing combinations are shown diagrammatically in Figure 1. The present paper deals with the distribution systems at the Flin Flon mine and metallurgical plants. THE FLIN FLON DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM In the high-tension sub-station at Flin Flon, each incoming 110 kv. line is provided with manually operated, gang-type disconnecting switches. Each line is connected to Canadian General Electric type F.H.K. 39-60B-F.2 T.P.S.T. 110 kv. 400 amp. oil circuit breakers, each provided with M.K.4 centrifugal motor-operated closing mechanism. Gang-type disconnecting switches are installed on each side of incoming line breakers, and a complete ring bus system is formed through station tie breaker, which is' further provided with gang-type disconnecting switches on either side. The?bus tie breaker is of Canadian Westinghouse design, type G.22B, 110 kv., 400-amp., solenoid-operated. All three breakers are provided with bushing-type current transformers, and the two line breakers are further equipped with bushing-type potential devices. Oxide film lightning arresters (121 kv.) are installed on each incoming line and are located outside the station. Each line is further provided with interlocked gang-operated ground disconnecting switches. All disconnecting switches are mechanically connected to auxiliary switches, which provide pilot service to indicating lamps in the remote-control room, located in a separate building.

"INCO Limited operates eleven under-ground mines in the Sudbury area. The mines are located on the rim of the Sudbury Basin, an oval with the axis in the range of 27 km and 60 km. The ore dips to at least 3000 m below surface. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 55 000tonnes per day.Over 40 surface fans have been installed since the late 1960s. All of the fans are adjustable pitch, axial flow units. A major factor influencing ventilation design in the last 30years has been the introduction of diesel equipment underground. Volumes per fan have ranged from 60 m3/sec. to 330 m3/sec., with motors from 100 hp to 2500 hp.Fans of the axial flow type have been commonly used for main fan installations at Canadian mines for many years. The standard arrangement has been to mount these fans horizontally, i.e. with the fan shaft and the long axis of the housing horizontal. This is a natural arrangement for an underground fan, but for a surface installation, a vertically mounted fan has definite advantages.The surface area taken up by a typical vertical fan installation is generally about one quarter that of a horizontal fan of the same capacity (Rutherford, 1957). This is not a problem with isolated fans and fat surface out crop sites, but where the installation is to be near existing buildings, or where there are poor surface soil conditions, space and cost considerations greatly flavour vertical fans."

"Mechanical mixing equipment is common in a wide variety of mining, metals and process applications, such as hydrometallurgical reactors, solvent extraction, digestors, and tanks for storage of slurry or hydrocarbons. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been applied successfully to single-phase mechanical mixing problems for several decades and is established as a reliable design tool. As computational power and CFD codes have improved over the years, there have been significant advances in modelling capabilities including improved models of turbulence, interaction of rotating and stationary components, multiphase flows, and modelling of free surface interfaces, for example. This paper will provide an overview of the application of CFD to mechanical mixing problems. First, it will review the traditional single phase Multiple Reference Frame (MRF) approach and introduce a range of advanced modelling techniques. Three examples of the application of CFD to industrial mixing problems will be given. It will be demonstrated that CFD is an effective tool for reducing technical risk in design, for identifying the root-cause of mixing problems, and testing modifications to existing operations."

Work to improve employees' behavior in Głogów Copper Smelter began in 2009. It has been noted that over 90% of accidents at work are attributable to human reasons. At that time, a series of external workshops was contracted based on exercises conducted by a psychologist trainer with supervisors. Having trained about 300 employees, an observation of employee behavior at workstations was started as part of the control of risk reduction measures. As a result of the above actions, the number of accidents was reduced by half between 2009 and 2017. Currently, internal workshops for communication improvement for behavioral auditors are conducted by the employees of the Smelter. Named: "I observe, react and communicate" and aimed at further mastering the elements of the safety culture in Głogów Copper Smelter. INTRODUCTION KGHM Polska Miedz is an integrated mining and smelting copper producer based in Poland and operates on the international metal market. KGHM, with annual production of over 500 thousand tonnes of copper, holds a middle position in the world ranking of copper producers. At the same time, in Europe it is the largest producer of copper from its own ore deposits, possessing its own integrated production structure, from underground mining operations to final, top-quality product. It is also worth mentioning that KGHM Polska Miedź is one of the largest Polish exporters and, apart from copper, is a significant primary silver producer in the world. The mission of our company, consistent with its strategy, is to produce copper and silver in a safe mode for workers and the environment, with reduced environmental impact. Therefore, "Głogów" Copper Smelter operations are continuously focused on the creation of safe working conditions, and minimizing the negative effects on the environment. La découverte du gisement du puits Penna a nécessité une révision complète de tous les circuits du concentrateur Laronde pour permettre, premièrement, l?adaptation du procédé à la nouvelle minéralogie et deuxièmement, l'accroissement du tonnage de 1800* à 4500 t/j. Aux circuits existants de broyage, de flottation du cuivre, de cyanuration et du charbon en pulpe, les circuits suivants furent greffés : broyage semi-autogène, flottation du zinc, manutention des concentrés (épaississage, filtration, entreposage et chargement automatisé), décantation à contrecourant et précipitation au zinc, destruction des cyanures et remblai en pâte. Cet article se veut une revue des différentes étapes du projet d'agrandissement du concentrateur qui se sont effectuées par phases progressives de 1997 à 2000. De plus, une description des nouvelles technologies sélectionnées et implantées est présentée.

Gold leaching from a commercial cyanide-amenable gold ore was studied at 25°C using sodium bisulfide-hydrogen sulfide solutions containing elemental sulfur. Gold extraction from the ore using 0.55 M NaSH, 4.1 atm (60 PSI) H2S, 1 g/L S8 and 26% solids by weight was about as good as the best extraction obtained by cyanidation. Maximum extraction was achieved in roughly 48 hours. Sulfur dissolves in the bisulfide solutions to form a mixture of polysulfides. Simple speciation calculations indicate that gold solubility as bisulfide complexes should be roughly ten times higher than in the absence of added zerovalent sulfur. The principal bisulfide complex is believed to be [Au(HS)2]-. Gold dissolution is favoured by increasing HS- concentration and by increasing H25 pressure. Polysulfide complexes of gold are also likely to be formed, and may contribute substantially to gold leaching. Two experiments using pure gold were also performed. Up to 100 mg/L gold was dissolved in 140 hours using 0.55 M NaSH, 1 g/L added elemental sulfur and 6.2 atm H2S.

The mining sector is a major economic driver for Canadian, and British Columbian communities. In parallel strong commitments have been made by industry to the well-being and sustainability of associated communities. However, these dimensions are the least understood. Especially lacking are focused regional investigations that compare the well-being and sustainability of communities dependent on different resources sectors. It is hypothesized that this type of comparative analysis will help to foster a greater understanding of what makes a resource or mining community healthy and sustainable. This paper describes research that examined community-level indicators associated with well-being (e.g. education, income and employment) and sustainability (e.g. economic diversity). The indicators were derived from Canadian Census data for 31 British Columbia resource-based communities (with a focus on mining) during a period of time (1991 to 2001) when resource sectors experienced an economic downturn. Our findings identify that during this decade, mining communities differed significantly from other resource-based communities, and comparative analysis of census derived indictors illuminate challenges that mining communities in British Columbia face with respect to wellbeing and sustainability (such as economic diversity, unemployment, and population loss). To contribute to the mining sector?s efforts towards meeting their commitments to communities, this paper concludes by proposing strategic opportunities aimed at the enhancement of mining community sustainability for policy-makers, communities, and the mining industry to consider.

"The wet grinding of asbestos has attracted the attention of engineers for many years as a means of improving fibre liberation from the ore. Today, added impetus for wet grinding has resulted from a need to minimize worker exposure to asbestos dust in conventional dry mills using air, as well as a need to provide a cleaner, technically superior fibre for use by product manufacturers. However, high viscosities of asbestos slurries create transport and grinding difficulties which have been a factor impeding use of a wet grinding process.Laboratory evaluation of reagents to reduce viscosities of asbestos slurries found that one reagent, XFS-4272.00, reduced the viscosity of a 35% (by weight) slurry by 75%. The impact of XFS-4272.00 on actual grinding parameters were evaluated using a pilot plant rod mill. Slurries containing 78% solids and XFS-4272.00 were successfully milled and asbestos fibres from that milling compared favourably in liberation and relative surface area to asbestos fibres obtained from milling a 4% slurry without additives. IntroductionAlthough the use of asbestos has been declining over the last few years, the large deposits of chrysotile in eastern Canada (Quebec in particular) remain very important. Asbestos production in Canada stands ninth in volume for mineral production with over 740 000 tonnes produced in 1985. Of this quantity, 722000 tonnes were exported with a value of $446 million. Canada is second in world production of asbestos behind the U.S.S.R. The milling of asbestos ore has been done primarily by a series of steps involving crushing, dry-grinding and aspiration using large quantities of air to release the fibres. Contrast this process to those practiced in the purification of virtually every other mineral. Ores other than asbestos are crushed and milled using an aqueous slurry in rod, ball or pebble mills. The finely ground mineral, still as a slurry, undergoes beneficiation by froth flotation, heavy media separation, hydrocyclones or any of the other aqueous techniques currently employed in mineral processing.One of the driving forces behind the use of air instead of water as a means of separating asbestos is the nature of the aqueous asbestos slurry. While most slurries of minerals contain as much as 80070 solids and can still be pumped and transported, asbestos slurries become highly viscous with as little as 10070 solids. These high viscosities reduce the pumpability of the slurry and create severe handling problems. Mills become prohibitively large and uneconomical due to having to handle slurries containing only 10% rock and 90% water.Health-related issues have affected the use of asbestos in many countries. In Canada, the asbestos-producing provinces have introduced stricter occupational legislation to improve safety in the workplace. This primarily means strict control minimizing release of air-borne asbestos fibres . Quebec and Ontario have set limitations of airborne asbestos at 2 (2) and 1(3) fibre per cubic centimetre of air. With present milling technology, maintaining these low levels in the workplace requires constant vigilance."

Introduction The Kirkland Lake (Ontario) property of Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited, - consists of four claims. The two main shear zones or 'breaks' of the Kirkland Lake camp extend through three of these claims, for a distance of approximately 3,500 feet. These claims are on the northeast side of the original lake. The water in this section of the lake has now been replaced with mill tailings. The degree of success of any completed undertaking, especially in the mining industry, reflects the personnel involved. I state with pleasure that the successful deepening of No. 5 winze from 6,400 feet to 7,272 feet was largely due to the co-operation and skilled workmanship of Shaft Captain J. Myelde and his efficient 'leaders'. This winze was sunk at a time when it was most difficult to obtain experienced shaftmen, with the result that the crews did not wholly consist of experienced men (although their desire to learn shaft sinking soon gave good results). This condition added greatly to the responsibilities and duties of those in charge, whose first consideration was for the safety of those engaged in the work, and I take great pride in recording that the entire sinking programme was completed without a lost-time accident. Location of Winze Due to the information obtained through deep diamond-drill holes collared below the 6,000-foot level being of sufficient importance to warrant further exploration, it was decided to deepen the existing No. 5 winze rather than sink another winze. This decision meant that the sinking must be co-ordinated with and proceed simultaneously with operations in the winze, where mining was being carried on between the 3,900-foot and 5,100-foot horizons, inclusive.

"Sink-float analysis is often used to obtain yield-ash and density partition curves in the coal industry. These provide a valuable tool for evaluating the performance of a separation process. However, for dense minerals, obtaining complete grade-recovery and density partition curves is more difficult due to the lack of heavy liquids available with the required densities. This paper examines a potential solution to this problem which is to perform batch fractionation of mineral samples in a laboratory-scale REFLUX™ Classifier using high viscosity fluidising liquids. The REFLUX™ Classifier is a gravity separation unit consisting of a system of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised bed. Operated in semi-batch mode, a charge of particles is fluidised from below and particles up to a certain density are elutriated from the top of the system. The fluidisation rate is then increased incrementally to fractionate the sample at progressively increasing densities. Previous work by Hunter et al. (2014) and Iveson et al. (2015) has shown that this method provides excellent agreement with yield-ash and partition curves for coal, especially when glycerol solutions are used as the fluidising liquid. This approach has now been extended to obtain the grade-recovery and density partition curves of high density mineral samples. This method has the potential to provide the minerals industry with an effective tool to evaluate the performance of unit operations separating at cut points higher than the available heavy liquids.INTRODUCTIONMeasuring efficiency and effectiveness is of key importance in the continuous improvement of mineral processing plants. For density based separation, one way the performance of a process can be evaluated is the measurement of density-based partition curves. Currently, this is done in the coal industry using the sink-float method, where heavy liquids are used to fractionate particles into discrete density intervals. However, with high density minerals such as iron ore, liquids of sufficient density are rare, and in most cases also pose serious health and safety concerns to laboratory operators. "Extracting any metal, especially specialty metals and rare earth elements, requires an in-depth analysis of the costs and potential revenue as well as a due diligence study of other stakeholder interests. Rare earth projects are generally in the billion dollar US range or above, and thus failure to accurately predict any loss of revenue caused by impurities within the product or additional effluent treatment costs can destroy an otherwise viable study. Two prime sources of input impurity are considered: impurities in the material feed and from reagents.
