The use of shall electrically- driven fans , in conjunction with air- pipe of various diameters is becoming of increasing importance for the ventilation of working places in metal mines through which the general ventilating currents can not be coursed . It will probably continue to increase in importance since the concept that air motion is the most important factor in maintaining comfort in hot ( above 80° F . ) working places is more generally accepted , and as the inefficiency and greater expense of attempting to ventilate such places with compressed air is recognized . Managers of large properties can afford to experiment with fan- pipe installations until types are found that meet their conditions , but managers of shall properties , unless forced to it by extreme conditions , prefer to wait until they can obtain data sufficient to guarantee at least a measure of success from such installations . At present , such data , even in part , are available to only a few (mainly fan manufacturer's representatives , consulting ventilation engineers , and ventilatin engineers employed by large companies ) , and important recent developments are mostly of a confidential nature . One large metal - mining company cooperated with a fan manufacturer in some extensive experimental work on small blowers and found that instead of using stock fans , considerable power economy could be effected and equal quantities of air delivered by use of or 2/3 width fans with small motors rather than using stock fans and larger motors ; it was also found advisable to adopt certain sizes of tubing for certain lengths of run . In fact , many important facts were ascertained in this study , and it is now promised that they will soon be given to the public . It is true that a certain amount of data on industrial installations are available , but such data are only in part applicable to metal -mine conditions , because , until recently , little attention has been given to ventilation in metalmines , and the conditions encountered usually require a greater length of pipe , a more temporary type of construction , and closer attention to temperature control than the ordinary run of industrial installations demands ..

The Bureau of Mines is collecting and analyzing representative samples of crude petroleum from all the producing fields in the United States , and the results are being published in a series of reports that are preliminary to the issue of a bulletin covering the entire survey . The bureau has recently completed a survey of crude oils from the Kansas district . In all 27 samples were collected and analyzed , under the direction of A. W. Ambrose , chief petroleum technologist of the Bureau. Valuable assistance was received through the cooperation of oil companies operating in the State , especially the Prairie Pipe Line Co. , and the Empire Pipe Line Co. The present report issued as Serial 2322 , on the Kansas crudes , forms the fifth of the series . Of the four previous papers , the first ( No. 2202 ) deals with crudes from the Eastern fields of the United States , the second ( No. 2235 ) with crudes from the Rocky Mountain district , the third ( No. 2290) gives additional data , cn viscosities and pour tests , for the crudes from these two fields , and the fourth ( No. 2293 ) covers the fields of northern Texas , northern Louisiana , and Arkansas . The details of the methods of collecting samples , making laboratory tests and interpreting results , have been discussed in these earlier reports . It has also been pointed out that the only adequate method of interpreting analyses of crude oils is to compare the individual reports with the analysis of some crude oil that is familiar to the operator . For this reason , no comprehensive discussion of the results of the Kansas survey is attempted, although some general statements may be made .

In the No. 3 Sunnyside mine of the Utah Fuel Co. a disastrous fire started on the afternoon of August 17 , 1920 , the effects of which are still present in the mine . On account of the extent of the fire , the expense involved in reopening the mine and the opportunities afforded for determining the effects of depleted air , a description of it is worthy of record . This paper is a summary of a more complete report , prepared by the writers , which will be published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines .

The smoke problem means different things in different places . In the neighborhood of industrial plants , especially smelting plants and cement plants , the term " smoke " is applied to material discharged from these plants , consisting of a mixture of solid particles ( dust ) , fume which has condensed from vapors , and gases of various kinds that are produced in the operations . In the ordinary use of the word , however , " smoke" refers to the visible material which escapes from the burning of coal . White smoke usually owes its color to small drops of water which have condensed from the water vapor that it formed in the burning of coal . When smoke is black, the color is due to unconsumed particles of carbon and usually when the smoke problem is spoken of , it is this black smoke produced in the burning of coal that is referred to , Many inquiries in regard to smoke are addressed to the Bureau of Mines , and the following brief summary has been prepared as covering the usual questions . For references to the smoke problem in England , I am indebted to a recent interesting paper on this topic by David Brownlie .

The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the benefits and economies to be derived by the better selection , preparation, storage , preservation and utilization of mine timber , and to give some specific information on certain wood preservatives and processes suitable for mine timber preservation . The paper is based largely upon data obtained by actual experimentation and service tests conducted by the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory , Madison, Wisconsin, on wood preservation , covering a period of many years , and upon a field survey during the past summer by one of the mining engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines of some of the principal mining districts of Michigan , South Dakota , Montana , and Idaho , in which he made a general ' study of mine timber in metal mines , particular attention "being given to timber decay ; the conditions under which it takes place most actively ; the measures , if any , that are being used to combat it; and, finally, the advantages that might be anticipated in the use of chemically treated timber to prevent decay and thus prolong its life .

[In an endeavor to promote greater efficiency in the lime industry, the United States Bureau of Mines is preparing a series of preliminary reports dealing with particular problems of the industry. Through the circulation of these reports, it is hoped that sufficient interest may develop among lime-plant operators to prompt them to discuss with the bureau their our experiences with these problems. By such an interchange of ideas, it is believed that conclusion may be reached which will be of practical benefit to try entire industry. Briefly, a permissible schedule of the Bureau of Mines establishes certain minimum standards for safety; it gives details of test methods adopted to determine whether these standards have been met, and a list of charges for such tests. Any manufacturer has the privilege of submitting his product for test in accordance with the conditions outlined in the schedules. His action is wholly voluntary, for the Federal Government has no jurisdiction as to what equipment shall be used in mines, this authority being left to the various States. When the product of a manufacturer has met the schedule requirements, he is permit¬ted to advertise this fact and to attach an approval plate with the bureau's seal to each machine he makes that is identical in every way with the equipment tested, inspected, and approved by the bureau. This work of approval has grown by the addition of new schedules until at present a great many mines are using one or more classes of permissible equipment, and there is still a demand for other approved apparatus in the ever-widening field of electrically operated machinery. The safety of electrical equipment of this type depends on four fundamentals, namely, (1) correct principles of design; (2) proper assembly of parts at the factory; (3) proper assembly and installation of equipment at the mine; (4) and proper operation and maintenance after installation. The first two factors are within the province of the manufacturer. The bureau either inspects and tests several models of one product, such as electric cap lamps, or one model, such as an electric motor. If this series of tests proves satisfactory, the manufacturer is given the privilege of making other appliances, and assembling them in the same way; the approval plate he attaches is his guaranty that the equipment is identical with the one tested and inspected by the bureau. In studying the destructive distillation or pyrolysis of oil shales, the primary consideration is to determine the effects of heat on the organic components of the shale. The impracticability of separating these organic components, collectively known as "kerogen", from the mineral matter with which they are associated renders the problem extremely complex. The behavior of the kerogan in the shale while undergoing the heating process is probably different from that of the same kerogen if it could be isolated and treated under similar temperature conditions, and in fact the results of actual distillations have shown that the physical properties of the mineral matter in the shale may be the cause of much variation in the products of retorting. It must be remembered that the inorganic .material of the shale is a heterogeneous mixture of minerals solidified into a very close-grained compact mass. This mineral mass has a thermal conductivity different from that of the kerogen, thus complicating the problem of even distribution of heat. Furthermore, the temperatures of dehydration of gypsum end some; hydrous silicates are included within the temperature range of the shale distillation, These minerals are frequently present in the shales; and the evolution of water vapors from them will affect the partial pressures of the hydrocarbon vapors evolved from the kerogen, probably tending toward, the improvement of the quality of the oil distillates. Carbonates and sulphides which are also frequently present begin to decompose within this range of temperature, and the gases produced from them may alter the chemical constitution of the oils produced from the kerogen.

[For a year or more, statements have appeared in the technical press, and Especially in various trade journals, indicating that valuable metals such as gold, silver, platinum, and other rare metals, have been found and also have been successfully extracted from oil shales. These reports stated tat decarbonization and special methods of chlorination treatment, leaching and subsequent Precipitation, also cyanidation followed by table concentration of the residues after cyanidation, all indicated that told ad silver and other metals could be, and were, successfully recovered. Such articles have caused much misunderstanding, and as the correctness of some re of the statements made in them were questioned by some of the technical journals and by various chemists and metallurgists, an investigation of the subject. was begun by the metallurgical division of the Bureau of Mines, in order, if possible, to determine to what extent, if any, metals of value do occur in oil shales, and if so, the feasibility of attempting their recovery by tie processes said to have been used for teat Purpose. Inasmuch as the Bureau's station at Salt Lake City is investigating the recovery of oil from oil shales, the investigation of too recovery of metals from oil shales was assigned to my direction as superintendent 'of that station. An agreement had been entered into with the owner of m extensive oil shale deposit in Wyoming whereby I would personally collect the samples' of shales for use in the investigation.]

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of southern Louisiana and southern Texas is the seventh in a series of preliminary chapters of a bulletin covering the producing districts of the United States. Preceding reports* may be obtained from the Bureau of Mines on request. The details of the methods used in this survey in collecting samples and making laboratory tests have been discussed in the first three papers. A method of summarizing and interpreting the laboratory data has also been given, but most of the crudes included in the present report differ so radically from those previously reported, that it has been found advantageous to adopt a somewhat different method in making summaries. This method is described in detail later. If any errors or omissions are noted by readers, it is hoped that these will be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, for correction before the appearance of the final bulletin.

In the production of oil end gas, engineering methods have been applied less than in any other branch of the oil industry. While refineries, gasoline plants, pipe-line and other transportation systems, and even drilling wells to a great extent, take advantage of engineering skill, the tendency has been to assume that the handling of producing wells is merely a mechanical and routine matter. At present few companies employ engineers to study oil and gas production methods with a view of increasing the general efficiency of recovery, but in vie, of the advancement in other lines of the petroleum industry by the application of engineering principles, does it not seem likely that the production branch may benefit also by engineering studies? Engineering applied to the handling of producing wells falls under two general headings, - first, the efficient handling of wells from the time of their inception in order to obtain the greatest possible ultimate production, and, second, the rehabilitation of old properties that have been handled carelessly in their early lives. To date, the engineering work that has been done on oil production problems falls mostly in the second class. For example, the use of vacuum and the application of compressed air have proved successful in some instances in stimulating wells of low gas pressure. These methods are costly to apply and are adapted to small wells in which the gas is almost exhausted, or in which the original gas pressure is negligible. The experiments described in this paper fall under the first heading, as they were made with an idea of learning toe probable extent to which the gas production of an oil well can be curtailed while gas in the sand is still plentiful, and thus saved for doing work during the later period of a well's life. Because of the scope of the experiments, this paper does not include a discussion of back pressure on flowing wells or for purposes other than cutting down the gas produced with each barrel of oil.

On the night of June 8, 1917, the flame of a carbide lamp accidentally set fire to the uncovered and frayed insulation of an armored power cable near the 2,400-foot level of the North Butte Mining Co.'s Granite Mountain shaft. How this insulation accidentally became exposed is explained on page 15. The highly flammable oiled fabric set fire to the shaft timbers, and as this is a downcast shaft the fire spread with great rapidity, soon filling the mine workings with smoke and gas. At the time 410 men were working underground, 247 of whom escaped by various means, but most of the 163 remaining were probably overcome soon after the lire started, and perished. Only two men were actually burned. The cause of the disaster was purely accidental. The immediate effect was the unexpected reversal of normal conditions; the ultimate effect was great loss of life and the destruction of the main hoisting shaft, putting it temporarily out of service. The work of rescue and fire fighting continued eight days. The following pages present an attempt to draw some practical conclusions and suggestions from this disaster. The property of the North Butte Mining Co. consists of about 220 acres in the northeastern part of the Butte district, Montana. Next to the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. it is the largest pro¬ducer of the district. In 1916, the year before the disaster, there were 1,160 men employed. The output was 560,947 tons of ore, which yielded 24,498,181 pounds of copper, 1,047,063 ounces of silver, 1,712 ounces of gold, and 412,953 pounds of zinc. The profit was $2,479,595. The total development work for that year was 21,694 feet. During the first half of 1917, the year of the accident, the daily tonnage of ore averaged 2,000, an increase of 400 tons over that of the year 1916.

For several years the Bureau of Mines has conducted surveys to determine the changes in motor gasoline being sold throughout the United States. The present survey shows that far the districts in which samples were collected, the average gasoline is becoming more volatile instead of less so, as is sometimes supposed. This year's gasoline is much more volatile than that sold two years ago, and it has a somewhat better distillation range than last summer's samples. A comparison of the average figures for several years, shows that motor gasoline is also becoming more uniform in character. The large seasonal change is disappearing, but ?winter gasoline', still has a lower initial boiling point than "scanner gasoline". This difference in volatility is made intentionally to facilitate starting the motor in cold weather. The end point shown in the present survey is slightly lower either than that of last winter or of the summer of 1921.

[In previous contributions** the writer has called attention to important relations that faulting bears to the migration and accumulation of oil end gas. It has been pointed that favorably situated parts of oil and gas bearing, sands have been enriched by migration art segregation incident to faulting. The escape of water through natural passages such. as fault fissures has induced wide spread hydraulic currents through the beds toward these, points, of diminished pressure and these water currents, plus buoyancy hove contributed largely toward the migration of oil to favorable rock entrapments in the vicinity of the faults.*** The propulsive force of expanding gas has been one of the contributing causes for the hydraulic currents. Paradoxical as it may seem, the escape of gas with entrained oil through fissures has been on important factor In the migration, and accumulation of oil in many faulted areas. Compressed gas is the propulsive force by which oil generally moves to producing wells. It is also one of the propulsive forces by which oil has moved with or even ahead of water under conditions: of differential pressure brought about by faulting.]

[The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. One of the most important considerations in any manufacturing industry is the production of stable material, that is, material which will not change in quality before it reaches the consumer. The manufacturer of gasoline, the refiner of crude petroleum, is handicapped in this respect by the varying nature of his raw material, but as far as it is commercially practicable, he has endeavored to improve his product, and in most cases he has been eminently successful. It sometimes happens, however, that a gasoline that is apparently normal when first made, will In time deposit small quantities of a gummy substance. The present Investigation was undertaken in the hope that it would throw some light on these gums and indicate how their formation might be prevented.

During the past 10 years the Bureau of Mines has had a broad experience in the tasting and inspection of electric motors for gaol-cutting machines, cowl drills, storage-battery locomotives and other equipment Which is used in mines where explosive mixtures of methane and air may be encountered. From this experience the Bureau's engineers have reached the conclusion that the most satisfactory method of protecting a motor so as to prevent any sparks resulting from rough commutator, loose contacts or short-circuits in it, from igniting he surrounding atmosphere, is to totally inclose the motor with a substantial casing; having flanged joints. These joints should be metal-to-metal contact so that the shortest path from the interior to the exterior Of the casing is not less than one inch in length. On account of this experience with mining machinery, the Bureau has been asked whether an equal or loss degree of protection would be sufficient for motors for service in or about places such as refineries, gasoline filling stations, cleaning establishments and pumping stations, or in any place where there is liklihood of explosive mixtures of gasoline or naphtha vapors and air accumulating.

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of Oklahoma is the sixth in a series of preliminary chapters of a bulletin covering the producing districts of the United. States. Preceding reports* may be obtained on request. The details of the methods used in this survey in collecting samples, making laboratory tests, and interpreting results are discussed in the first three papers. If any errors or omissions are noted by readers, it is hoped they will be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines for correction before the appearance of the permanent report. Samples of Oklahoma crudes analyzed in this report were taken from those fields representing the major production of the State. The Oklahoma Geological Survey designates 172 different oil and gas fields in the State, S1 being in Osage County, 14 in Tulsa County, 14 in Okmulgee County, 9 in Washington County. The list of samples collected by the Bureau of Mines represents only 5 fields in Osage County - Bigheart, Burbank, Hominy, Osage Junction, and Pershing - yet these samples, together with those from adjoining fields, are representative of nearly all crude produced in the county. The sample 'from the Pershing field, for example, is representative of the crude produced in several fields in that part of the county - such as Nelagoney, Pawhuska, Wyomona - and the sample from the Skiatook,
