"A gratifying decrease is noticeable in the number of men killed in the coal minas of the United States during the past six months as compared to the quantity of coal produced.During July last year, when 221 men lost their lives, the production of coal was over 50 million tons. In January, 1920, the production had increased to 56 million tons, or 11 per cent, while the fatalities, instead of increasing proportionately, actually decreased to 166, or nearly 15 per cent. Nor is this decrease a mere accident or coincidence peculiar to the month of January, as may be seen from the following table.From the figures shown above it may be observed that the average monthly production for January and the five months immediately preceding, was 49,500,000, or only 2 per cent below that for July, while the average number of men killed was 183, or a decrease of over 17 per cent."

"An investigation has been made of the applicability to a variety of coals, other than those from Illinois, of the Powell and Parr method of analysis for the forms of sulphur in coal.A complete study was made of the sulphur in the following coals:- Upper Freeport, Pa.; Pittsburgh seam, Pa.; Pocahontas No. 3, W, Va..; Letcher Co., Ky.; Morgan Co., Tenn.; and Cherokee Co., Kan.The method of analysis gave excellent results when applied to these coals. In the determination of pyrite, the iron-sulphur ratio checked in every case with the theoretical. After the extraction of the pyrite and sulphates, the remaining sulphur was proved to be organic in nature.This work indicated that sulphur exists in coal in three typical forms: - pyrite or marcasite, sulphates, and organic sulphur. A study of the changes which these forms undergo during coking has been made on a variety of coals, and the following five classes of reactions established.First. Complete decomposition of the pyrite and marcasite to ferrous sulphide, pyrrhotite, and hydrogen sulphide. This reaction begins at 300°C., is complete at 600 °C., and generally reaches its maximum between 400 and 500°C."

There have appeared, from time to time, comparisons of various features of coal mining practice in the United States and Great Britain. A recent, article, appearing in a British journal, points out that the American miner produces 3 1/2 times as much coal per shift as the miner, at one-half the cost, and proceeds to explain the natural industrial, and engineering causes which lead to this result. Amon« he reasons advanced. is that the American coal miner enjoys the advantage of more easily worked seams of coal, due to the fact that the coal mining industry in the United States is of more recent date than in Great Britain. The latter qualification is not correct, because where these advantages exist, they will persist. The coal beds of the United States are not buried deeply, except in the remote parts of the country, as in the Uinta Basin of Utah. The article referred to states that many of our miners are still employed on out seams reached by "adits", (which we term entries), or by vertical shafts of moderate depth. It is probable in fact that the great bulk of the coal of the United States is taken out from a depth of less than 400 feet.

"Records of individual wells form the basis for the successful operation of any company engaged in the production of petroleum. The expense attached to the compilation of records is negligible in comparison with the benefits resulting from their use. There a company has not a complete system of records, immediate attention should be given to the preparation of forms upon which to collect data, and, to the collection of data for these forms. The records needed vary with each district, but for each field a set should be adopted that will best meet the needs of each property. Practically all operators, and particularly all successful operators, agree on the necessity of good records, shopping what the wells have done, are doing, and may be expected to do in the future. Any operator realizes the value of records of sales of oil and should place almost equal emphasis on the records of well logs and histories showing the east and present performances of wells. Indeed, trustworthy records are absolutely necessary for the proper operation of any oil or gas property.Complete records should be kept on each well from the time the location and elevation are determined until the well is abandoned, and the engineer should review old records often enough to be familiar with the past performance of the various wells and with the conditions that affect production. "Purpose and Nature of Tests:The rapidly increasing use of motor vehicles and trucks in the United States is creating an entirely new problem in the proper ventilation of tunnels, subways and other confined spaces through which such machines must pass. This problem has become of immediate importance because a tunnel 3,000 ft. long is being designed to pass under the Hudson River between New York City and New Jersey. Another tunnel at Pittsburgh 5,700 ft. long through the South Hills, is already under construction, and a third tunnel, 6,000 ft. between Boston and Past Boston is proposed. It is probably that other tunnels will be started in various parts of the United States in the near future.The ventilation of such tunnels is a serious matter, on account of the poisonous nature of automobile exhaust gases. It not uncommon to read about finding a man dead in his garage. Generally this happens on a cold, winter morning, after he has been running the engine with the doors and windows closed."

"The American Consul at Guatemala City reports that the Guatemala Marble Mining Company is preparing to operate a marble quarry about 13 miles from the railroad station of Zacapa, which station is a little over 100 miles from Puerto Barrios, the nearest port from which the product may be shipped. The deposit is extensive, and though somewhat broken up in places, great quantities of sound marble are available. It is claimed that the marble is equal in quality to the best product of the Italian Carrara quarries.Access to the quarry by rail is obtained by a spur track of the International Railways of Central America (Ferrocarril Internacional de Centro America) from Marmol, 3 miles south of Zacapa. This spur is about 5 miles long and terminates at the foot of the mountains. A double-track incline cable-way 2000 feet in length has been constructed to bring the marble down the mountain. From the top of the incline to the quarry there is a railway six miles in length over which the rock will be hauled by two side-geared Shay locomotives."

"There seems to be some confusion between the terms carbon black and lamp black, although in American lampblack is generally understood to be a soot formed by the smudge process. In this process oil, coal tar, resin or some solid, or carbonaceous substance is burned in an insufficient quantity of air, while on the other hand carbon black is a product resulting from the incomplete combustion of gas and is deposited by actual contact of flame upon a metallic surface.The various carbons, such as gas retort coke, oil retort coke, graphite, carbon black, lampblack, vine black, wood-pulp,black, willow charcoal, and blacks made from refuse material such as leather have different characteristics as to flocculence strength of color, and physical structure. These blacks are made by one of the following methods:(1) Formation by direct contact of a flame upon a depositing surface.(2) Production by combustion of an oil, tar, etc., in an inadequate supply of air; the soot is allowed to slowly settle out on the floors and the walls of the collecting chambers.(3) Carbonization of solids and subsequent reduction to a state of small subdivision.(4) Production by heating carbonaceous vapors or gases to a decomposition temperature by external heating with or without air in the forming chamber. This is usually referred to as cracking or thermal decomposition."

"Employee representation in the management of large mining enterprises was first introduced in organized form, by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. in 1915. Within the past few years a number of the larger mining enterprises have introduced similar systems and there is growing interest in the subject. This will be stimulated by the final report of the President's Second Industrial Conference, in which the following statement occurs:""The conference finds that joint organization of management and employees where undertaken with sincerity and good will has a record of success. The general principles governing such organizations are stated at length under the title 'Employee Representation. It is not a field for legislation, because the form which employee representation should take may vary in every plant. The conference, therefore, does not direct this recommendation to legislators but to managers and employees.""If the joint organization of management and employees in the plant or industry fails to reach a collective agreement, or if without such joint organization, disputes arise which are not settled by existing agencies, then the conference proposes a system of settlement close at hand and under Government encouragement, and a minimum of regulation. The entrance of the Government into these problems should be to stimulate further cooperation."""

"A remarkable explosion of fire-damp caused by a discharge of lightning at the new shaft at the Sitalpur coal mine, has been reported by the Chief Inspector of Mines of India, who gave the following details:""The explosion occurred during a thunderstorm, and the evidence showed that a flash of lightning had, to all appearances, passed down the shaft caus¬ing disruptive discharges at certain points between the guides and the winding rope, rending the latter at two places situated respectively .228 .feet and 278 feet from the surface, The distance between the winding rope and the side of the shaft was 5 feet 4 inches, indicating a spark gap ;of this width, and an intensity of discharge which could not fail to ignite the explosive mixture of gas and air known to be present in the shaft.""The Compressed Air Magazine, January 1920 issue, which contained the above extract also goes on to state;""In 1915, M, Ferey described in a paper read before the Societe de l'Industrie Minerale phenomena of a similar character to the above. In a pit liable to sudden outbursts of gas, for the sake of safety, shot firing was carried out from the surface. During a storm, in the year 1905, shots went off in two places after the detonators had been connected to the conductors) we read in the Colliery Guardian, London. These shots were situated respectively 1,400 and 1,410 metres from the firing station, Realizing the possible danger from this cause, the precaution was taken to cut the conductors at the bottom of the shaft and to connect there just before firing, Even under these conditions a shot went off spontaneously, -.owing, it is believed, to lightning."""

"On January 15, 1920, a man was killed by falling rock in a limestone quarry in Utah. The quarry was visited by a representative of the Industrial Commission of Utah, and the cause of the accident was carefully determined. The facts concerning this accident, and the Bureau's recommendations are given in some detail in the hope that quarrymen may take steps to avoid dangerous conditions, and thus reduce the liability to accident.The quarry rock face is about 180 feet high, and the ledge is covered with an overburden of 10 to 20 feet of a mixture of soil and boulder. The rock face is not vertical, but slants at an angle of about 45° to 50°, while the stripping face stands at an angle of 70° to 80°, and is flush with the rock face. The conditions are shown in the accompanying figure.The man who was killed was employed in breaking rock at the foot of the quarry wall. The sun had been shining on the stripping face, and probably thawed the ground, thus permitting a boulder weighing about 20 pounds to roll down the slanting face, striking, and almost instantly killing the workman who was working with his back toward the quarry wall."

"A need exists for men in oil-field production work who correspond to the mining engineer of a large mining property. Some oil companies prefer to call such an employee a resident geologist, resident engineer, or a petroleum technologist. He should perhaps be more correctly termed a petroleum production engineer. The duty of such a man is to apply his scientific and geologic training practically to oil-field development work.He should be, by education, a mining, civil, or mechanical engineer, with a knowledge of geology and chemistry. Upon completion of his education, such a man should spend several years in the oil-fields. There are two means of gaining proper experience. The first method is to work for an oil company in making a detailed study of each well, collecting data on the history and production, followed by a preparation of good records, from which well logs can be prepared. From the well logs, the geologic cross-sections, peg-models, and structure contour maps can be made. These allow a comparable, detailed study of each well, which is necessary to solve many of the problems. Along with this the engineer should visit drilling wells daily for collection of samples of formations and for a proper study of how they drill. He should form friendly relations with the drillers and production foremen. The second method of gaining proper experience is to start work as a roustabout, pumper, or on the pipe¬line gang, finally working up to a tool-dresser. After three or four years of such work, the engineer may be classed as a petroleum production engineer."

"At the beginning of 1920 a general feeling of optimism was noted in many talc-producing districts. The industry seems to have recovered from the temporary depression of the first half of 1919 and many mills are running at capacity production with their entire output for 1920 contracted for. The imports of talc for 1919 were only slightly larger than in 1918 by weight and probably no more by value. Thus foreign competition has not begun to be seriously felt. Several new companies in this country have been organized, some to operate new deposits and others to continue the work done by others.An interesting phase of the present situation is the possibility of increased use of talc in paint. There is a shortage of barium sulfate used as,paint filler. Since, for some uses, talc is considered second only to BaSo4 as a filler for paint, it is possible that part of the shortage could be relieved by an increased use of talc.A series of physical tests upon all pigment materials used in the manufacture of paints is being conducted for the Paint Manufacturers Association of the United States. It is important that all types of talc be represented in these tests. Producers of finely ground talc, 200 mesh and finer, are urged to submit samples of at least two pounds each of these grades that are available to paint makers with trade name and quality data, to the Institute of Industrial Research, 19th & B Streets, Washington, D. C., where the tests are being conducted.The Talc Products Company, Inc., Washington Building, Los Angeles, California, has recently been organized to develop a large body of talc one mile north of Riggs, San Bernardino County, California, This deposit contains a compact, white talc which can be sawed into crayons. The company's mill, at Los Angeles) is equipped with a unit of the Raymond system of grinding and air separation, and pencil sawing machines. It is reported that the pencils are being successfully used in Pacific Coast ship yards.The mining of talc where no mill is owned by the operator and the consequent sale of talc in its crude massive state has not proved profitable in a number of cases recently noted. Under exceptional circumstances, where mining costs are low and the product can be sold to a mill near the mine, the operation maybe profitable, but this condition is not common. One mine of this type has recently closed down, at least temporarily; but a second, more fortunately situated, in another district, is continuing operations, although plans are being made to erect a mill in the early spring. Most satisfactory results are ordi¬narily obtained where the mine and mill are owned by the same company.The sale of the Balmat mine of the International Pulp Company, near Gouverneur, N. Y., to J. H. McLear, Gouverneur, and H. G. McLear of New York, has been reported. It is stated that a large part of the property has been already leased to the Sylvia Lake Company, who will operate it. ""Cement, Hill, and Quarry""* states that ""the first mining done on this property was for silver and lead, but it developed into a good zinc producing property and later it was worked for its talc deposits. It has passed through several hands, the American Pulp Co., the Union Talc Co., and the International Pulp Co., all having had it in successive periods since 1891."""

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. "Domestic Situation:The greatly increased use of lithopone as a base for paints, particularly for interior use, has timulated the demand for barytes to such a degree that the supply cannot keep pace with the demand. Lithopone is an artificially prepared compound composed of about 70 per cent barium sulphate and 30 per cent zinc sulphide, precipitated together. Its most important use is in paint, but it is also used in oilcloth, linoleum, rubber goods, shade cloth, etc.Prior to the war large quantities of barytes were imported from Germany, but during the war imports were negligible, domestic production increased very greatly and is still increasing. Ground barytes as used in paints/ formerly regarded as an adulterant, but now it is generally recognized as a valuable paint constituent. Mile domestic sources have expanded rapidly they have not overtaken the demand and there is need for still greater expansion. Stocks are low, little is being sold on the open market, and prices are high. Since barytes is a gangue mineral associated with metallic ores now being mined in the west, it is suggested that more attention be given to its recovery as a by-product.The following tables compiled from reports of the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, indicate the growth of domestic consumption."

"There is continued activity in connection with probable reopening of old-time silver producers, but this is largely offset by other obstacles which make metal mining in Colorado a rather precarious proposition. Discussions at the joint meeting of the Colorado chapter of the American Mining Congress and the Colorado Metal Mining Association in Denver, January 20, 21, and 22, brought out many interesting facts, among them that Colorado, once a producer of high-grade ores, and with freight rates, smelting charges, etc. to accommodate high-grade ores, is now compelled to depend almost wholly upon low-grade complex ores or abandon mining, In the face of this, the railroads threaten to advance freight charges, and smelters , because of decreasing tonnage, high labor, etc., must either advance smelting charges or close (the Globe Smelter et Denver recently closed, and it is said that the Salida Smelter will close in February). A serious menace is the possibility of increase of rates by companies supplying electrical power, and the threat of the agricultural interests, now in the saddle in Colorado, to alter the laws so as to greatly increase the burden of taxation to be borne by the mines.In order to stimulate interest in Colorado metal mining, the Colorado Metal Mining Association and Colorado chapter of the American Mining Congress have planned to have an elaborately staged exhibit in the Denver Auditorium during the latter part of the coming summer, This exhibit will reproduce an old time mining camp,including mining structures such as mills, headframes, etc., as well as the camp saloons, dance and gambling halls, etc., together with mineral exhibits from many of the old time mines, no abandoned, but possibly to be reopened. due to increased price of silver, Inasmuch as the Bureau of Mines plans a National First-Aid meet at Denver in August or September, and the Rocky Mountain Mining Institute will also hold its summer meeting in Denver, it seems advisable to hold the three meetings simultaneously and it is proposed to have this done.Labor supply is fairly abundant and apparently not inclined to be dissatisfied; few, if any, strikes or other labor disturbances being found. In some mining regions advances in wages were posted January 1 and no wage reductions are noted.The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute held its meeting at Denver, January 20, 21, and 22, and much attention was devoted to methods of bringing down coal without use of explosives chiefly by undercutting and subsequent use of hydraulic processes of forcing down the coal. Some attention was given the question of labor and it was suggested that the time is at hand when labor unions should be made responsible bodies by incorporation or otherwise. It was agreed to hold the summer meeting in Denver simul-taneously with the holding of the National First-Aid. and Mine Rescue Meet.In general, coal production in Colorado is proceeding satisfactorily with occasional interruption by local strikes, and tonnage is up to that being produced before the strike, but not nearly up to the record of 1918. In general, the labor supply is plentiful, but demand for coal is by no means great and unless some cold weather intervenes, it is probable that the lignite mines will have to go to a three or four day a week basis. There have been no recent disasters, but the Pictou mine of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company encountered a heavy supply of water, and had to be abandoned until such time as arrangements can be made to pump or bale the water out."

"Reports are sometimes heard of one ill effects of pneumatic tools on the hands of workmen. In consequence of such reports, Dr. Francis M. Barnes, Jr., M..D. of St. Louis, Missouri, was retained by the operators to make an investigation of conditions in the Bedford, Indiana, region, and the result of this investigation was published the Journal of the Missouri State Medical Association, Volume 16, February 1919. A brief review of this report may be of interest to all users of pneumatic tools, or operators of plants where such tools are employed.The investigation was made during December 1917, and involved an examination of general working conditions, and a careful physical examination of stoneworkers who had long used pneumatic tools. As the Bedford district is the most important structural limestone producing center in the country, the results of this investigation may be regarded as fairly conclusive as to the general effect of pneumatic tools on limestone workers."

Coal mining is more widely distributed throughout the United States than is generally known, as 30 States are credited with having coal mines. In 1919 twenty-three of these States each produced at least a million tons of bituminous coal, and all the States produced about 560,000,000 tons. In addition, Pennsylvania produced about 85,000,000 tons of anthracite. Twenty-eight States have regulations prepared by commissions or have enacted laws governing the operation of coal mines. Pennsyl¬vania has separate codes for the anthracite and bituminous fields. The codes may be classified as follows: Twelve distinctly coal¬mining codes; eight codes that are essentially coal mining, but also apply to other mines; five codes that are subdivided, referring partly to coal mines and partly to other mines; and four codes that are essentially metal mining, but apply in part or in whole to coal mining. The first State to have a coal-mining law was Pennsylvania, which enacted a law, for Schuylkill County only, in 1869. The first State to enact a coal-mining law governing all the coal mines in the State was Illinois in 1872, followed by Ohio in 1873. Pennsylvania in 1879 enacted a law for anthracite mines only, but did not enact similar laws for bituminous mines until 1577. At least 10 other States enacted coal-mining laws between the years 1870 and 1890. Before 1890 electricity was little used in coal-ruining operations and therefore practically no provisions governing the installation, inspection, or maintenance of electrical equipment were made in any of the laws enacted up to 1890. In the law of Colorado, approved April 8, 1885, there is a reference to the use of telephones, probably the first reference to electrical equipment of any kind in a State-mining code. Most of the mining codes have been changed from their original form by amendment or by complete revision. [Inquiries are frequently received by the Bureau of Minas relative to occurrence, mining, treatment and utilization of the natural hydrocarbons' such as gilsonite, elaterate, wurtzilite, grahamite, and ozokerite although have been known and used for many years, they are not yet well understood and the amount of recent literature dealing with them as comparatively small. This paper is intended merely to summarize the present knowledge The natural hydrocarbons included in this series are gilsonite, elaterite, wurtzilite, glance pitch, manjak, grahamite, albertite, arid ozokerite and many other minor varieties. With the exception of ozokerite and the other mineral waxes, then all more or less resemble asphalt in that they are dark brown or black bituminous substances of organic origin, generally with a resinous luster. Ozokerite usually light an color with a waxey luster, is closely allied to the others of the series, but is usually considered separately, Unfortunately authorities differ as to nomenclature so that determinations of physical and chemical properties from different sources may riot be readily compared. Abraham Herbert, Asphalts and Allied Substances, 1918, 606 pp. has made one of the most detailed studies of these subjects in recent years, and his classification is used in the main. "The Phosphate Rock Market:Indications, in the fertilizer market, point to a prosperous condition, caused chiefly by the growing demand for all classes of fertilizer material in spite of a shortage of supplies. Both of these conditions have been caused by the war. The shortage in phosphate rock is being relieved as production increases, but the supply has not caught up with the demand for this spring's trade, at least. Reports from Florida are to the effect that more than half the necessary quota of laborers are at work. This may not appear to be a very good showing, but even this situation is en¬couraging because there is a larger force now at work than has been the case for some time, and it is steadily, though slowly, increasing. Some of the producing companies are conducting advertising campaigns to get laborers back to the phosphate fields and attractions in the way of better housing and living conditions are being offered.Producers are far more confident about the situation than they were two months ago, and though the shortage will not be met before the end of 1920, theme is a surplus accumulating over what is going out on existing contracts.Quotations are now being offered on all Florida rock excepting land pebble and this, it is expected, will be soon quoted.Quotations on Florida rock per ton are as follows:"
