The accuracy of vibrating wire stress meters has been questioned by various users in the mining industry. During an in situ coal pillar study, a laboratory evaluation program was developed to determine whether stress meters could produce reliable measurements in coal. More than $0 stress meters were tested for accuracy, repeatability, effects of setting pressure, and the concept of using a single curve for interpreting the stress-meter data. The testing medium was lucite, a material with a modulus of elasticity very similar to coal. The evaluation demonstrated that the stress meters did provide repeatable measurements, but that accuracy was lacking when the recommended interpretation technique was used. Therefore, a new technique was developed that required all stress meters to be calibrated in the laboratory before use in the field. This new technique reduced the average error to typically less than 10% and, in the worst case, to below 15%.

Highly delaminated muscovite mica products (WG-1 and WG-2) have been developed by J.M. Huber Corp. The micas are characterized as a 325-mesh product having high brightness and very narrow particle size distribution. At 40% loading in polypropylene, WG-1 mica provides substantial improvement in tensile modulus and equal tensile strength to unfilled polymer; in high-density poly- ethylene (HDPE), WG-1 provides four times the tensile modulus and a 50% increase in tensile strength over unfilled polymer. Surface modification of the water-ground mica (SM ™) provides substantial improvement in tensile strength over untreated mica at greater than 20% loading in polypropylene; in HDPE, tensile strength is twice that of unfilled polymer.

The concept of using water-only cyclones as a clean coal scalping device preceding a heavy media cyclone circuit shows considerable promise, as it can considerably reduce the feed to the heavy media cyclone circuit. The system will not perform as well as a heavy media cyclone circuit alone, but the resultant loss in yield is small and may be negligible under some conditions. The concept of water-only cyclone scalping has previously been suggested by others. By reducing the amount of raw coal to be processed in the more expensive circuits overall capital and operating costs may be reduced. There are a few commercial plants with circuits operating on this concept. In the Warwick and Rowland plants water-only cyclones are used to scalp the feed to a heavy media vessel and Deister tables respectively while Amherst Coal Company's McGregor plant uses them to scalp the feed to a heavy media cyclone circuit. The system was evaluated on a technical basis, both from a theoretical viewpoint and by analysis of a computer simulation, in order to gain a fuller understanding of its usefulness and limitations.

The problem with best practices occurs when they do not work. This happens when the seldom-stated assumptions underlying the practice are not met. This paper provides some examples for the mining industry: (1) when core splitting is inappropriate, (2) when the use of fire assays for placer samples is inappropriate, and (3) when high-grading may be acceptable. Geologic conclusions are, in the final analysis, expressions of judgment predicated upon knowledge and experience. A geologic conclusion, however, purports to be more than an arbitrary determination—it is reached as a consequence of method. No specific method is required, but the method used must be an orthodox method, in accordance with orthodox definition of terms, and the one best adapted to the dealing with the questions asked about the property in question. Whether the so-called “best practice” is really applicable to the job at hand must be decided on the basis of professional scientific judgment. When one decides to deviate from a published “best practice” for sound scientific reasons, describe in detail in the report what the so-called “best practice” is, why it was inappropriate for the project, and why the method used was better. If one becomes aware that a “best practice” is being proposed, actively urge those proposing it to include in its description the underlying assumptions that must be met in order for the “best practice” to be valid.

Rational design based on engineering fundamentals is essential for the layout of safe, stable shafts and tunnels. Shafts and tunnels including winzes, raises, adits, and crosscuts are lifelines to the underground and must be secure. The contribution of this paper describes a significant extension in existing software previously developed for five important design problems in strata-bound mines such as coal, trona, salt, potash, and some large, lead-zinc mines. This extension in software allows analysis to proceed in three easy steps: (1) preparation of a strata properties file, (2) generation of the finite element model, a mesh, and (3) finite element program execution. Circular, elliptical, and rectangular shaft sections are available for a single shaft, twin shafts, and shafts in a row. Spacing of twin shafts and shafts in a row is a free parameter (pillar width). Tunnel shapes are the same as shafts but include the conventional arched back section. Dipping strata of variable thickness, depth and orientation relative to the excavation of choice are allowed. The analyses are three-dimensional. An elastic-plastic material model based on associated rules of flow and an N-type yield condition for isotropic, transversely isotropic, or orthotropic rock are used for all strata. Example analyses from several hardrock mines are provided to illustrate the three-step process including mesh plotting and plotting of selected results. The goal of this software is to advance mine design technology for improved miner health and safety.

DEFINITION OF BAUXITE The term "bauxite" (1) dates back to 1821, when it was assigned to a deposit of red earthy material outcropping near the village of Les Baux in Southern France. Chemical analysis indicated the presence of aluminium oxide, iron oxide and water. Deposits of bauxite are widespread throughout the world although the major developments occur within 30 degrees of the Equator. Essentially bauxite is the product of weathering and leaching of a variety of sediments or rocks, generally in a high-rainfall tropical or sub-tropical climate, resulting in the enrichment of the aluminium oxide content. It is characterised by the presence of one or more of the minerals, gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore. The other constituents are usually clay, (typically kaolin), hematite and/or goethite (iron-oxides), anatase (titanium oxide), and possibly silica as quartz. A variety of minor elements may be present, such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, vanadium, gallium, manganese, and many others in very small quantities. Organic compounds are normally present from development in association with a soil horizon where vegetation may be encouraged by the high rainfall necessary for bauxitisition. The physical form depends upon the geological history of the deposit and correlation also exists with the mineralogy. Older deposits which have been subject to burial are invariably hard and compact with the alumina predominantly occurring as boehmite or diaspore, while the more recent, surface deposits are frequently less compacted and gibbsite is the dominant alumina mineral. In these later deposits, the physical form can vary from the fine red soil (terra rosa) of Jamaica to the Weipa pisolites to the cemented Arkansas type. The presence of concretionary structures is an important aid in identification in the field.

Throughout the history of mankind, the principal use of coal has been to produce heat through combustion. The heat is used in many ways: to warm air space for our comfort; to provide heat or energy to power industrial processes, such as cement and steel production; and to produce electricity. Because it is our nation's most abundant fossil energy fuel, coal in the late 20th century is on the threshold of becoming a significant source for synthetic liquids and gas energy fuels for this country. This is made possible by conversion processes which can change solid coal into various synthetic gases and liquids. These coal-derived fuels are nearly identical to the processed fuels and chemicals provided by natural gas and crude oils, which presently provide almost all the petrochemical feedstocks and energy fuels needed for the residential, light commercial, and transportation markets. A revolution is beginning to take place, not only in the United States, but in many other countries with a return to a coal-based energy economy. Also, new combustion and conversion technologies which are compatible with national health and environmental goals are rapidly emerging. These technologies will allow coal's use to be expanded not only in its traditional markets, but also to supply markets held by natural gas and crude oil. With the worldwide decline in natural gas and crude oil reserves, coal is being-looked upon to meet the energy demand. Because of these new coal conversion technologies, coal will no longer be only a combustion fuel, but a valuable raw material for production of a variety of clean fuels and chemicals.

Ash is a material that many people leave to nature to handle. Others sometimes sweep it under the rug to be disposed of by someone else. In our business we cannot do either. In fact the American Electric Power System spends many millions of dollars in plant investment costs to collect the material, and then many more millions to dispose it. In 1965 alone the coal fired steam generating plants in., the AEP System produced approximately 2,400,000 tons of ash, enough to fill 40,000 coal cars which would extend as a single train across the entire states of Ohio and Indiana. Even though our present ash production is large, this is only the beginning when we forecast the future growth of our system. By 1980 it is estimated that our generating capacity will expand to about three times its present size, and with coal as our primary source of fuel our ash production will increase proportionately to about 7 million tons a year.

The Michigan Department of State Highways makes extensive use of geophysics for subsurface surveying which would be applicable for uses in other fields. Examples of resistivity surveys are given which include a proposed large volume excavation with suggestions for land use after excavation, subsurface evaluation for engineering design, and a subsurface survey for land appraisal. An example of a combined refraction seismic and resistivity survey is shown where the resistivity is used for outlining the unconsolidated soils, while the seismic method Is used to outline bedrock and to evaluate it for rippability. A refraction seismic survey at the bottom of bridge caissons for evaluation of bedrock uniformity and a relative aid In assessing rock strength is reported.

Gentlemen, my subject today is glass reinforced plastics. By definition, this encompasses a wide variety of materials: at least a half dozen basic varieties of polyester, epoxy, and phenolic; virtually infinite compounding variations within the basic groups: literally limitless variations in the amount and the nature of the glass reinforcing. Complicating all of this is the fact that different modes of application of the same material fall appreciably alter' the product's general strength and suitability. These many, many differing materials are what we conveniently call "glass reinforced plastics" or, more simply, fiberglass". This common name is actually a large part of the problem when dealing with fiberglass materials. Far too often a specification is written calling for simply "fiberglass reinforced polyester', based on successful prior use of a polyester laminate. Such a specification is very nearly worthless since such tremendous variation is possible under it. Success of a laminate furnished under such a specification is entirely dependent on good fortune

It is not yet in general use in the mining and ore dressing fields, since most of the requirements in these areas have been for relatively coarse particle sizes. As the need for finer grinding increases - because of different ores, new products, and new values being sought - jet pulverization will, increasingly, be properly used.

In the United States there are approximately 155 established operating plants located in 37 states, extending from coast to coast. Silica, in varying degrees of chemical purity, enjoys a very diversified market. Silica is the basic ingredient of glass, bothcontainer and flat glass, and is used for grinding and polishing of flat glass up to the final polishing stages where rouge is generally used. Silica is used for foundry molds and cores, sandblasting, stone cutting, refractories, placing sand in furances, glass coatings and linings, laboratory glassware, construction, oil well fracturing for increased oil flow, filtering purposes, silicate of soda, silicon carbide, and others.

"The United States’ supply of critical minerals has been a concern and a source of potential strategic vulnerabilities for U.S. economic and national security interests for decades (for example, see Strategic and Critical Minerals Stockpiling Act, 1939). More recently, with the rapid increase in the types of materials being used in advanced technologies (Fortier et al. 2018a), and geopolitical events surrounding the supply of rare earth elements (Ting and Seaman, 2013), among other developments, the critical minerals issue has again achieved a high level of visibility within the U.S. government (Executive Order 13817 (2017)).In this paper, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides an overview of its ongoing focus on critical minerals through the agency’s core competencies in mineral information, mineral resource assessments, geologic and topographic mapping, geophysical surveys and mineral resource research. Aspects of the multifaceted critical minerals issue addressed here include:• Identifying minerals that meet the definition of “critical” provided in Executive Order 13817.• U.S. net import reliance for critical mineral raw materials.• Current status of domestic critical mineral resource assessments.• Current status of topographic and geologic mapping, and geophysical survey coverage of the United States.• The Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI) to support future critical mineral exploration.• Critical mineral potential of waste streams from extractive industries.Identifying minerals as criticalU.S. government agencies and other organizations use a number of existing definitions and criteria to identify a mineral or mineral material as critical, strategic or otherwise important. The executive order defined a “critical mineral” to be “(i) a nonfuel mineral or mineral material essential to the economic and national security of the United States, (ii) the supply chain of which is vulnerable to disruption, and (iii) that serves an essential function in the manufacturing of a product, the absence of which would have significant consequences for our economy and national security.” This definition is broadly consistent with that defined by the National Research Council (NRC, 2008) and may be summarized as “essential in use” and “subject to disruption of supply.” Virtually all of the dozens of critical minerals studies conducted since the 2008 NRC report have used some variation of this same definition (Hayes and McCullough, 2018)."

Since 1986, BRGM has been developing a powerful process simulation software package, USIM PAC. These last years have seen significant developments in mineral processing technologies, particularly in hydrometallurgy, bio-hydrometallurgy and mineral liberation. The new version of the simulator, USIM PAC 3.0, incorporates these modem-processing fields. Its structure and tools allow the user to take into account, at the same time, a wide range of technological, economical and environmental aspects. The improvement of the existing features and the introduction of new unit operation mathematical models and tools such as the supervisor, global optimization, workshop model or chemical reactions contribute to a global approach in mineral processing design.

This research project demonstrates the application of a mine system simulation and animation model in enhancing the efficiency of a truck-shovel operation and reducing the haulage environmental impact in an open-cut coal mine. In any mine, a key objective is to have enough equipment for production and not have excess to where it is counterproductive. Due to the advent of responsible mining, environmental regulations, and eco-friendly practices, these factors must also be considered in the analysis. The over-trucked situation at a mine will be discussed, i.e. when the number of trucks exceeds the optimum number of trucks a mine should have for the most productive/profitable mining operation. When the system has an excess number of trucks, truck utilization is reduced which impacts mine operation, capital costs and the environment, through unnecessary truck purchase, energy use, air pollution etc. A hypothetical surface coal mine layout was used for the simulation model.

Optimization of a three-dimensional (3D) underground stope layout is complex given the number of variables and constraints to consider, such as the stope size. Determination of the appropriate stope size in stope layout optimization problems is a complex process that must consider several factors including placement of infrastructure and development, production scheduling, and equipment selection. An inappropriate stope layout can result in unrealistic expectations for a production schedule, consequently negatively affecting the derived economic value. Therefore, this paper used a dual interchange algorithm (DIA) to evaluate the effect of stope size on the stope layout economic value (SLEV) for a synthetic Platreef mineral deposit planned for extraction using sublevel open-stoping. The results showed that generally as the stope size increases, the SLEV decreases. This aligns with practical mining because larger stope sizes have a higher chance of incurring more dilution which reduces economic value, while smaller stope sizes enable more flexible extraction where unprofitable blocks can be left unmined as waste, thus increasing the derived SLEV.

Introduction Minicomputers have been gaining acceptance in mining. Low cost interactive processing and plotting can now be controlled by geologists or engineers needing rapid solutions and specialized mining software in formats that allow noncomputer personnel to readily interact with computer processes. User-oriented programs maximize the use of interactive display features and graphics, as shown by the HP9845 minicomputer, a unit with portability, processing power, graphics capabilities, capacity, and peripherals such as plotters, digitizers, disk drives, and printers. Application Coal exploration projects require that much effort be spent determining coal volumes within trial pit limits. This determines a prospect's viability and potential. Adapting volume calculations to a computer has been limited, since it was difficult to create reasonable representations of complex coal seam geometry with a digital process. So many of the simple mechanical procedures needed to produce pit reserves are still performed manually by geologists and engineers. But with new minicomputers and their interactive graphics, it is now practical to accurately model complex structures without tedious calculations. GEOSEM (Geomin Seam Oriented Exploration System) is a computer system designed to analyze coal prospects. The system shows how a coal prospect, with complex geology, can be quickly analyzed, modeled, displayed, and evaluated for mineable reserves. Its interactive graphics allow rapid visual presentation of data, high-speed tabular reports, and precision plotting. The system is most effective when used by a geologist or engineer who selects the required operations and specifies relevant parameters via screen and keyboard interaction. Rolling Hills The Rolling Hills prospect represents a typical Rocky Mountain coal deposit. Enough geological interpretation has been done to show a complex system of block faulting with coal seams following synclines of stratified lithologies. With the completion of initial drill hole exploration, questions arose concerning coal volumes and strip ratios involved with various pit limits. Quality information had been gathered on the coal intercepts. It was decided that coal vol¬umes and pit designs were of prime importance. The objective was to enter and display data, create a computer model based on interpretation, develop pit designs, compute seam/ waste volumes, and report various contents. The project, begun by entering data in the GEOSEM system, was completed in several days. Data Entry For modeling, the prime information was seam identity and drill hole intercept. Other information-rock type, Btu rating, and percent of ash, sulfur, and moisture-was also available. It, too, was entered into the data base through the computer keyboard and then reported, verified, and corrected. Various reports can be produced, according to user specified sort parameters. For example, from an analysis of available data, only 14 intercepts could be found with Btu value greater than 8000 and sulfur content less than 0.4%. The sort option can also be used prior to entry into the analysis routines. Data Analysis Though the objective was to create a seam model and compute reserves, it became necessary to project quality information into unsampled areas. Statistical analysis was then war-ranted. A typical analysis correlated the lack of relationship between percentage of ash and Btu. Although histograms were also produced, these typified a lack of samples and "ragged" distributions. A geostatistical analysis was also applied, showing the results of computing a 2-D variogram on the largest coal seam. Results showed an average range of 18 m, with a poorly defined variogram. Data Display and Drafting Scaled plans and sections were required so seam locations could be compared to hand drawn interpretations and drill coordinates verified. At the same time, topography could be interpolated from collar elevations to determine whether surface control points were needed for better definition. In addition, a new set of 50 final-scale drawings were required, showing new drilling information. By using the computer screen as a "scratch pad" device, various sections were displayed and then plotted on a drum plotter at the desired scale for overlay on original sections. KMG Minerals, Inc., a mica-feldspar-quartz producer in Kings Mountain, N.C., uses about 50% of its plant's -200 mesh slimes to manufacture brick. However, the company is unable to market the remaining 50% of this fine mineral mixture. The NCSU Minerals Research Laboratory operated a pilot plant to process these slimes to produce an additional product. The process, consisting of blunging and hydraulic sizing, was designed to separate a kaolin-enriched -270 mesh product from the bulk of the coarser +270 mesh "grit" minerals. Size analysis showed that this product was 80% finer than 20 microns and 50% finer than 6 microns (in equivalent spherical diameter). An evaluation indicated that it is a hydrous aluminum silicate that might be suitable in the filler and extender markets for traffic paint, some types of plastics, joint cements, and dusting compounds. Because of its high viscosity, it will be difficult to use more than a small percentage in cast ceramic bodies. However, it might be possible to use up to 10% in extruded ceramic bodies (i.e., electrical porcelain). The 15.2 cm (6 in,) diameter Linatex Hydrosizer was tested using a range of teeter water flowrates, so that the net rise velocity was varied from 0.10 cm/s to 0.40 cm/s. The solid feed rate to the sizer was maintained at approximately 1.1 t/hr/m2 (0.12 ton/hr/ft2). Tests were run using both "shallow" (i.e., 6 in.) and "deep" (i.e., 15 in. teetered beds. The best overall result was obtained when the sizer was operated with the "deep" teeter bed and a net rise velocity of 0.10 cm/s. About 97% of the +270 mesh material was rejected and approximately 79% of the -270 mesh material was recovered in a 14% solids slurry.

"This paper presents a quarry optimization plan using a block model and an in-house development quarry scheduling and optimization software (QSO Expert) to help improve quarry operations at Crystal River. The Crystal River Quarry is an underwater quarrying operation that barges limestone via the Gulf of Mexico, as the main source of raw material to a cement plant in Theodore, Alabama. To improve the quarry operation, an evaluation was completed to optimize the quarry planning and extraction procedures of the quarry. In order to achieve this, additional exploration drilling campaign was implemented, a new block model was re-calculated and the latest version of QSO Expert software was used. The primary economic impact is a higher recovery of limestone reserves; sustainability of resources, corresponding longer quarry life. Secondarily as the limestone is mined underwater and stockpiled above water, drainage reduces moisture content achieving direct cost reduction on limestone shipping. In addition, a considerable reduction in operational cost was achieved due to a significant decrease in consumption of electrical energy, reduced dragline maintenance costs and reduced dragline movements within the operation. INTRODUCTION Holcim is a Swiss-based global building materials and aggregates company. Founded in 1912, the company expanded into France and then throughout Europe and Middle East during the 1920s. In 1922, Holderbank, as the company was then known, expanded beyond the Swiss borders into France. By the end of the decade Holderbank held stakes in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Egypt (Holcim History 1912-2012) Positions in Lebanon and South Africa soon followed.. Holder bank later expanded in North America in the 1950’s. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Holderbank continued its expansion in Latin America, Asia and Spain for the first time. The company expanded into Eastern Europe and experienced a boom in Spanish construction preceding the 1992 Summer Olympics. By 1986, Holderbank was the world's largest cement manufacturer. In the 1990s, the company consolidated its European holdings as the American market drove growth. Expansion into Eastern Europe and Russia continued (Holcim History 1912-2012). In 2001, the company changed its name from ""Holderbank Financière Glaris"" to Holcim (short for Holderbank ciment) (Holcim History 1912-2012). Holcim expanded by purchasing Aggregate Industries entering into the United Kingdom for the first time. That year, the company also expanded into India by acquiring a stakes in The Associated Cement Companies (ACC) and Ambuja Cement Eastern. In 2008, Holcim became the largest shareholder of China's Huaxin Cement with a 40% stake. In 2009, they acquired Cemex Australia. In 2014, Holcim and Lafarge announced they had agreed to terms on a ""merger of equals"" valued at nearly $50 billion in 2015. The new company LafargeHolcim based in Switzerland has a manufacturing capacity of 427 metric million tons a year."

Newmont Gold operates the Carlin East underground, one of four underground gold mines the company operates in northeastern Nevada. Carlin East began full production in early 1995. The mine's current rate is 900 t/d (1,000 stpd), producing about 4.6 t/a (150,000 oz/year). About 125 hourly and salaried personnel are employed at the project for its estimated six-year mine life. Two mining methods are currently used at the Carlin East Mine. Longhole stoping with cemented backfill accounts for 70% of the total mine production. Conventional underhand drift and cemented fill accounts for the balance of the daily tonnage. In December 1996. Newmont purchased an AC-Eickhoff ET-210 roadheader. The machine went into service in mid-June 1997. It is used in longhole Stope topcut development and cut-and-fill production at a rate of 225 t/d (250 stpd)
