Underground construction environments, especially those with limited airflow such as shafts, cross passages, and stations, necessitate effective dust control. This requires combining existing measures with adapted approaches for more efficient and productive operations, cleaner jobsites, and decreased worker exposure to contaminated air. This paper will discuss new configurations and trends in dust collection on Australasian infrastructure projects including WestConnex, Melbourne Metro Tunnel and City Rail Link, all of which have applied innovative methodologies for mobile at-source dust collection. Mobile dust collectors can be track-mounted dust collectors operate alongside equipment, use hydraulic stepping systems to advance with roadheaders, or compact castor-mounted units are used within cross passage confines.

Flotation is the most efficient and preferred solid-solid separation method in mineral processing. However, enhanced production of high-grade concentrates at sufficiently high recovery still poses technological challenges to-day. A novel flotation method to produce final-grade concentrates from finely-ground ores in a single step is being developed and tested by CANMET. For the complex sulphide ores tested, grades are superior while recovery is considerably improved. Furthermore, concentrate production rates, at similar recoveries, are faster than for the conventional rougher-scavenger-cleaner configuration. This paper discusses the physical operating parameters affecting Cu-Zn flotation metallurgy.

The City of Toronto's Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors (NTC) ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. 120 m of Starter tunnel and 70 m of Tail tunnel were excavated with roadheaders to help with the launch of the TBM and as part of the contract base scope work. JayDee Canada in Collaboration with Everest Equipment Co. developed an innovative approach to design and build a stand-alone Ring Machine Erector nicknamed Enterprise to erect precast segmental lining in Starter and Tail tunnels in lieu of Cast-In- Place concrete. This paper describes the design and provides feedback on the innovative procedure used to install the rings.

Limestone quarry Vijenac, is one of the key limestone producers in B&H. Conventional massive drilling and blasting is the technique applied for limestone exploitation. Utilized blasting scheme causes appearance of large oversize stone pieces, uncontrolled flying stone and undesirable seismic effects. In order to reduce or eliminate exposed disadvantages and to improve environment in the area of Vijenac quarry, an innovative blasting scheme was tested. Conventional blasting scheme was changed from single row, deep inclined blast holes combined with two lines short horizontal holes to multi row, inclined blast holes combined with a single line short horizontal blastholes. Applied innovative blasting scheme reduces negative blasting impact on the environment through safer working conditions, reduced amount of dust after blasting, reduced explosive and energy consumption, reduced appearance of explosive gasses and reduced earth and air vibrations as the result of seismic effects.

Approximately 6 years ago, Newmont Mining Corporation (Newmont) initiated reclamation/closure at its’ Hollister operation in Nevada. Reclamation/closure challenges existed at three primary areas within the operation. One the open pits had a small, low pH lake. The primary waste rock dump had a collection system for seepage of low pH solution. The heap leach had a typical inventory of process solution. In each of these three areas water quality and water quantity challenges existed. Reclamation/closure techniques were employed that utilized run-on controls, re-sloping, capping/topsoil placement, pit backfilling and vegetation for water quantity control. Water quality controls included installation of passive, anaerobic systems. These mechanisms have effectively limited water volumes that require treatment and effectively treated the water to meet standards.

Introduction Although innovative coal extraction technology can be approached from many angles, this paper focuses on three: innovation in response to rising costs, to changing mining conditions, and to regulatory issues. Before exploring these three subjects, however, a basic question needs to be raised. Why Innovation? Coal is widely heralded, and quite correctly so, as the United States' "ace in the hole." It has been said that the U.S. is to coal what the Arabs are to oil. The implication is that we have nearly inexhaustible reserves - that coal is cheap, plentiful, and easy to extract. Indeed, because our current productive capacity is estimated to be 15-20% greater than demand, we have been given a false sense of security about the ease of future coal extraction. Therefore, innovative measures are being concentrated on developing technologies for the demand side of coal, including power generation, synthetic fuels, and industrial applications. What is often forgotten is that the unit cost of producing energy from these new technologies depends critically on the cost of the coal feedstock -in some cases the coal consumed accounts for more than one-third the total cost. Thus, while the developers of the end-use technologies struggle to improve the overall thermal efficiency of their process by one or two per¬centage points to make the energy produced competitive in the marketplace, they often are unaware of the risk of a 3 to 6% increase in coal costs wiping out the expensive, hard-earned results of their research. Energy planners are just beginning to realize that coal is not a uniform commodity available at low cost in infinite quantities. Coal is a heterogeneous material whose cost and quality vary widely with local conditions. To produce the massive amounts of projected coal-based energy at reasonable costs, we urgently need devel¬opments in extraction technology, as well as in end-use technology. Thus, coal extraction, coal conversion and utilization, and end -use energy consumption must be viewed as highly interdependent parts of an energy supply network (Fig. 1). And current emphasis on conversion and utilization must be balanced by more emphasis on upstream technologies, including coal extraction. Even more important, the impacts of innovation (or the lack thereof) in any one technology area in the energy supply network need to be discussed and understood by those working in each of the other areas. Why innovation in coal ex¬traction technology? Figuratively, we are all in the "coal boat" together - geologists, miners, transporters, processors, power producers, distributors, and consumers. Innovation is required from each of these sectors to overcome the obstacles that prevent greater use of our most abundant national energy resource. All other links in the coal energy supply network depend on large volumes of coal produced at reasonable costs. Declines in productivity, therefore, must be reversed; the more difficult mining conditions that will be encountered call for new methods and equipment, and regulatory issues must be resolved if the coal ex¬traction link is to be a strength rather than a weakness in the planned U.S. transition to an economy based more on coal and less on imported petroleum. In today's modern gold mining industry in Australia, and the world, more and more companies are recognising the competi­tive advantages gained by implementing an effective training program for operations (processing plant) personnel. Plant operators, or process technicians, are unique amongst all other gold mine employees. They are at work in shifts cov­ering 24 hours a day and their actions can have a profound effect on the operation's economic performance. To a large degree, the minute to minute decisions and actions of an operator can deter­mine whether gold is extracted to bullion in the goldroom or is discharged into the tailings dam. Experience has suggested that most small to medium sized gold operations in Australia, and even some large ones, have not implemented an effective training program. This is not attrib­uted to deliberate negligence or "anti" attitudes against training, moreover mill superintendents and metallurgy managers are technical people not oriented to human resource techniques. Usually the demands of designing, constructing and commis­sioning a gold plant overshadow the need for training in the first instance, In fact some well designed plants treating friendly oxide friable ore have little need for a dynamic well trained oper­ating staff. However, many plants do require a thinking team to optimise production and changing ore conditions towards the end of a mine's life can expose poor competence levels at large expense. Few managers will argue that training is a necessity and results in a win-win situation. The operators win by increased job skills, job satisfaction, clear career development and possibly better pay conditions. Trained personnel usually reciprocate with increased effmt and work ethic. The company wins also by having a thinking team which will maximise gold production and reduce operating costs.

In this paper, an innovative concept in longwall tailgate support is discussed. This new concept utilizes a new high capacity roof truss system in lieu of conventional wooden crib block. The first field test was conducted at Bailey Mine and was very successful. Similar tests have been installed in other mines and seams. An extensive instrumentation plan was designed and implemented in the truss test area. The test data has shown that the dynamic roof truss system effectively controls the various abutment pressures caused by longwall mining thus maintaining a stable tailgate entry.

A lot of work is in progress to improve copper recovery by leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning (L-SX-EW). At Outokumpu the focus of attention is on SX equipment development as a result of which a new mixing-settling technology, the Vertical Smooth Flow (VSF) has been introduced. Using helical stirrers in the VSF mixers a more gentle and uniform contacting can be obtained than in the mixing compartments of the low-profile design. The benefits of Outokumpu's new approach are an essential decrease in organic losses and in aqueous in organic entrainments. Separate pumping using a smoothly pre-contacting "Dispersion Overflow Pump" (DOP) is a key feature of the VSF design. The scale-up of this pump as well as the VSF mixers are shown to follow simple mathematical relationships which also have been confirmed by full scale experiments.

An overview of new size reduction technology involving the use of two-mass natural frequency vibration applied to a totally enclosed elongated drum. Material moves with a drum-like rotary motion with exposure to constant, aggressive, high frequency agitation for faster reduction and enhanced product quality. Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

Recently, the health of the cement industry has been threatened by the impact of environmental regulations, over-zealous state and federal agencies and radical environmental groups. Unfortunately, cement plant operations tend to trigger every environmental regulation and program promulgated, plus several programs designed specifically for the cement industry. These environmental burdens come at a time when the cement marketplace has been impacted by imports resulting in a situation where it has been difficult to increase prices to offset these increased environmental liabilities. The competitive world market forces the cement industry to seek creative ways to reduce costs. With additional major environmental programs coming down the pipe, like the Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1980 and EPA regulation of cement kiln dust, the cement industry has attempted to try innovative supplements to cement manufacturing. The cement industry has found that using waste tires, biosolids and other solid wastes in the cement manufacturing process can reduce costs and plant emissions.

When Bridger Coal Company transformed their operations from surface mining to an underground longwall operation their plans included not only the addition of new mining equipment but also surface fans for a blowing (supply) air ventilation system. The original system concept included a propane gas fired air heater to preheat the intake air during cold weather and a dual parallel fan and duct system. One fan operated to ventilate the mine while the other fan was for stand-by emergency operation. Equipment proposals were submitted in March, 2005 based on the dual parallel fan system. Discussions conducted during the equipment selection process revealed that several alternative system design concepts were available. The alternative concepts included innovation features that not only saved space and cost but also reduced operating expense as well. Many of the features were incorporated into the final design of the system. A comparison of the original system concept and final installation design are presented in the paper in addition to details of the features and the derived benefits.

INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties because it doesn't have the financial resources to pay for the development costs from its own funds and doesn't have the financial strength which will enable it to borrow the money needed for development. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a financing can be arranged for the small mining company. This paper is an attempt to describe the fundamental steps on how such financing can be obtained --in other words--what is required to provide ad- equate capital at a low cost for developing and bringing a mining property into production. Innovative financing follows from this. The basic keys for building and maintaining a successful mining company are "the four M's": Management, Market, Mine, and Money. The writer believes their order of importance is as presented and each is a building block required in order to obtain the type of financing that best suits the borrower and lender. MANAGEMENT Management must be experienced, highly organized, realistic, able to take advantage of opportunities and fulfill promises. Mine financing requires a variety of skills and concentration on the part of management. Management should have a thorough understanding derived from experience in geology, construction, mining and metallurgy and environment, marketing, and financial matters. Management must realistically visualize what will be produced at what cost and truly evaluate the risks associated so the proper security can be correctly designed. Since risk cannot be eliminated, the objective of management is to identify the risk which will be present in a given venture and assess the level of that risk which will be acceptable to the firm. Generally the risk which is present is subject to little or no modification. After management identifies and measures the acceptable risk the firm will proceed in a way that it will be least exposed. Management must determine its long-term objectives and strategies within the context of a constantly changing world. This question must be addressed before examining the sorts of risk which affect the development and operation of a specific property. The compilation and interpretation of "hard data" by competent people is good to a point but the experience and instinct of seasoned individuals are the important factors in management choosing a long-term direction for the corporation. The attitude towards risk greatly affects the goals of the corporation. Major risks in a mining project can be placed in four categories: 1. Market - Price, demand, substitution. 2. Costs - Capital, operating, financial. 3. Regulation. 4. Taxation. The feasibility study for a project is the fundamental tool used in the management of risk. Management should employ an experienced team with an established and well-understood set of ground rules for the preparation and assembly of a feasibility study. The necessary degree of realism is built into all levels of the study and if the project is technically feasible, the company's hurdle rate is then used to discount the base-case project cash flow in order to determine its financial viability. Understanding the geological significance of the mineral deposit is critical. There should be strong interplay among the pure regional geologist, the detailed mine geologist, the mining engineer, and the metallurgical engineer. The collaboration among these different disciplines will yield a feasibility study that is more reliable. The essence of this work must be appreciated and understood by the executives planning the financing. It is vital that they thoroughly understand the risks and make the proper risk assessments to cope with our rapidly changing market environment. Projecting future revenue values is paramount and is subject to much estimation. One way to mitigate fluctuations and the risk of falling prices is by selling production for future delivery. Gold, as a precious metal, has been sought for several thousand years. During this time economics have generally determined whether or not a deposit is minable. Today, few would spend $500.00 or $1,000.00 to produce one ounce of gold, yet most gold deposits currently being mined would have such costs if they were mined using the methods of the 18th century. Innovation has been the key to success in the world of mining. We are constantly having to look for new ways to mine deposits of lower grade, at greater depths, or with higher stripping ratios. The mining of placer gold deposits has always been subject to the volatile swings of the world price and the constant rise in production costs. The rise in costs is compounded by the drop in overall ore grades. Occasionally, a major technological innovation will dramatically reduce the costs of placer mining to allow previously marginal or unminable deposits to be mined at a profit. The continuous bucketline dredge was the last such major innovation in the gold placer mining. The continuous bucketline dredge has allowed large volumes of placer deposits to be picked up and processed on a continuous basis. Unfortunately, as the overall grade of the deposit declines, it becomes impossible to process enough ore to pay for the operating costs. There are many gold deposits around the world waiting for the next technological innovation that will allow them to be mined. A number of innovative techniques exist for solving heap leaching problems in special situations. Some of these techniques have been successfully applied and others await an opportunity for application. Discussions in this paper will deal with gold heap leaching under severe thermal conditions, in tropical rainfall circumstances, in the absence of fresh water, and in other situations removed from the ordinary. CLIMATIC CONSIDERATIONS The success or failure of precious metal dissolution operations may be strongly dependent upon proper attention to the influence of climate. Minerals beneficiation commonly requires initial crushing and grinding so that the mineral phase we seek to concentrate is adequately liberated to obtain a product of specified grade at optimum recovery. To some degree this also is true for coal preparation. In the comminution process we liberate not only the product but also the tailings phase. The true objective is, therefor, to eliminate from the comminution circuit whatever particulate matter has reached specified liberation, regardless of whether the particle is product or tailings material. Overgrinding either of the two phases ties up mill capacity and usually also burdens the downstream processing steps by increasing costs or decreasing recovery, or both. In view of this situation, one would expect concentration steps to be commonly incorporated into the cominution circuit. The reasons this is not done may vary, but probably include the desire to utilize large scale unit operations, e.g., large mills, in conjunction with very simple processes. Hydrocyclones have satisfied this desire but may not always be employed for the right reasons. Hydrocyclones are indeed simple. They also are rugged and forgiving. Unfortunately, these virtues are frequently misused. The direct results are inefficient classification and overgrinding. The indirect results are added costs through recovery losses, unnecessary recirculation, and so on,
