Minerals contribute to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels ? from mining and processing to the manufacturing of Anished products. In 2009, the estimated real GDP of the United States decreased by 2.4 percent compared with, and the estimated nominal GDP was about $14.2 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. In 2009, the continued decline of the housing market was reflected in reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel, and crushed stone (those mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction). Production of mineral commodities associated with the manufacture of goods for the housing market, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard also decreased. "In 2016, the estimated value of total nonfuel mineral production in the United States was $74.6 billion, a slight increase from the revised total of $73.4 billion in 2015 (Table 1). Increased construction activity spurred increased production of industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction. Although starting the year relatively low, prices for several metals, especially for some of the precious metals, began to trend upward. Decreased production of most metals produced in the United States, however, contributed to an overall decline in the value of metal production.Several U.S. metal mines and processing facilities were idled or closed permanently in 2016, including iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota; three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; one secondary zinc smelter in North Carolina; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and titanium mineral operations in Virginia. In addition, in May, the weekly average rig count for oil and gas drilling reached its lowest level since the 1940s when that measurement was first recorded. The reduced drilling activity resulted in decreased production of some industrial mineral products used in the drilling sector. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy declined or held steady, except in the manufacturing of nonmetallic mineral products and nonferrous metals excluding aluminum, which increased. Overall, mining trended downward as the result of significant declines in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2). Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA), also known as "Superfund", requires a listing of sites that have known releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants throughout the U.S. When EPA determines that a significant threat exists, it places the worst contaminated sites on the National Priorities List (NPL). CERCLA provides EPA broad authority to clean up hazardous sites that threaten human health and the environment. There are currently 52 sites on the NPL that were placed on the list because of high human health or environmental risk as a result of non-coal mineral extraction, beneficiation, or processing operations. This list covers mining sectors from aluminum to zinc. While some of these sites were abandoned, many are still operating. (There are additional mine sites that have been recently proposed to be included on the NPL that are not included in this paper.) EPA is continuing to develop a mining program to address human health and environmental threats from active non-coal mines. EPA has performed a comprehensive study to assess the waste management practices at all of the 52 mine sites on the NPL. In addition, EPA is continuing to collect information on the specific mining sectors (i.e., gold, copper) that represent many of the NPL mine sites. One of the goals of this effort is to attempt to identify the types of mining practices that lead to human health and environmental problems at the NPL mine site. EPA estimates that there are currently 500 to 1,000 active mines (not including placer operations). While some mining NPL sites began operations before the turn of the century, only a handful of the NPL mines entirely ceased operations prior to 1970. Of the 52 NPL sites studied by EPA, 12 are currently active. By definition, these mines represent current mining practices. Approximately 17 additional NPL mines that ceased operations between 1970 and 1990 represent some degree of current mining practices. Therefore, at best, less than half on the 52 NPL mine sites can be said to definitely represent past mining practices. Although some mining waste management practices have changed over time, the basic technology for extraction and beneficiation of mineral ores have remained fairly constant over the last fifty years. While the use of acid to leach copper dumps, the use of cyanide to leach gold in heaps, and the spread of solvent extraction techniques has changed some aspects of mining, the basic operation of removing ore from the ground and concentrating it through beneficiation has remained fundamentally the same as when most of the non-active

Introduction Our society is currently experiencing a change in civil philosophy toward US industrialization. We have become increasingly bent on the pursuit of a nirvanic state of zero risk. The money supply has become inversely proportional to its sources. And most mining companies, traditionally conservative, have become increasingly risk conscious. Rising taxes, high inflation, and decades of a steadily decreasing gross national product (GNP) - coincident with moral decay and disarmament - have eroded America's economic health. Psychology of US metal markets has shifted across the economic spectrum to disillusionment and discouragement. The sagging national economy, expanding governmental debt, and a backward mineral policy in concert with worldwide unrest and turmoil have caused great volatility in the metal markets. Congressional inaccessibility of US resources has contributed to its loss in strategic leadership and dependency on foreign suppliers and the common market. Large scale mining activities are now on the decline. And there is an overall slump in mineral exploration in this country. America now faces the sobering reality of almost total importation of 13 key mineral commodities and total dependence on foreign sources for five of them. There is a growing dependency on 21 of the 34 minerals vital to the US economy. And virtually everything needed can be imported directly from third world countries. Almost 85% of the free world's supply or production of vanadium, chromium, platinoids, manganese, and titanium - an essential to the aerospace industry - comes from South Africa. That country now plays a forefront position in supplying the West with minerals. The Soviets have become increasingly aware of this situation. They have made key moves in procuring for their own purposes major raw materials markets, particularly in South Africa. This is obviously threatening to the US' direction and brings about vulnerability to shortages and cutoffs. In spite of these developments and the overall change in the mining industry, there is good opportunity for growth ahead. The way has been paved for the smaller mining companies, particularly the more bullish of these. Smaller mining organizations possess a tight management and strong sense of direction. They can easily adapt to and cope with change. "Windows" that exist in the industry directly depend on a number of factors. These include the busi¬ness climate, market research and planning, management and human resources, applied appropriate technology, favorable hunting ground, and entrepreneurship. Mining as business Mining (and exploration) as a business is by its very nature highly speculative. It involves greater risk for a longer period of time than most other businesses. The entire mineral estate in the US continues to shrink. This is primarily because of various legislated wilderness measures. Consequently, the probability of finding an economic ore deposit in the US has decayed to less than 1%. Although the risk is high, the stakes far outweigh the gamble and are larger than most other businesses can offer. Mining properties, as investments or business opportunities, can provide effective hedges against long-term inflation because the real price for selected commodities, such as gold, may sometimes rise faster than inflation. Recessionary periods seem to provide the best climate for entering the mineral business or for a particular mining organization to expand its activities. Looking ahead and seizing opportunities during a depressed market will pay off. Property payments and royalties are likely to be lower. And the potential for an upward shift in prices for a given commodity is very positive. The decision to invest in a prom-

Before the first shovelful of dirt is removed from a developing mining property, a wide range of data must be collected, organized and analyzed. Among the key steps in this process are: • Visualization of the deposit from drill hole data and geologic interpretation, using all available information, including surface geology, geochemistry and geophysics. • Drawing of vertical and horizontal sections. • Construction of a 3D solid model of the deposit. • Contouring of deposit outlines and geological structure until the model represents best estimate of reality. • Estimation of grade and quality distribution. • Calculation of reserves. • Examination of possible mining methods. • Determination of economic feasibility. Many techniques are available to aid in this process of mine project feasibility analysis, from quick pencil calculations to sophisticated computer methods. However, time races faster in the complex modem business world than it did 50 years ago. Tried and true pencil methods take too much time. Opportunity may pass a mine developer by while a property is still in the first stages of analysis. In the days of hand techniques, initial analysis of the economic feasibility of a mining project usually stopped with reserve calculations and broad mine planning. Further planning was not done or was done only for the short term. Manual techniques require too much time and manpower to evaluate a longterm mining program. Mining-industry recognition of computer utility has increased. Most companies now use computers in technical applications and could not conceive of working without them. Building initial computer models of a deposit may take nearly as long as hand techniques. But the payback comes when changes are needed and a variety of mine plans are quickly tested.

"This research sought to facilitate improved stakeholder (community) analysis using discrete choice theory (DCT). The work considered 16 project attributes and four demographic factors. The discrete choice experiment was conducted in Salt Lake City, Utah to illustrate the usefulness of DCT in mining stakeholder analysis. The data was used in discrete choice modeling of individual preferences. The approach answers three important questions for enhanced stakeholder analysis: (1) What are the factors that affect individual preferences? (2) What is the effect of demographics on individual preferences? (3) What is the value of environmental and social impacts to individuals in the community? INTRODUCTION Stakeholder analysis is crucial for effective stakeholder engagement because it is important to identify and characterize stakeholders in order to effectively engage in dialogue with them. This is not only true for all stakeholders but true for characterizing the members of a particular stakeholder. The local community is usually the largest and most diverse single stakeholder group. Also, the local community is perhaps the most important stakeholder group. Thus, analysis of the local community is essential for project management. Conventional mining stakeholder analysis is a three-step process, which involves evaluating: (1) each stakeholder’s view of the project (positive, neutral, or negative); (2) how influential each stakeholder is (high, medium, or low); and (3) how they will be impacted by the project (high, medium, or low) (ICMM, 2012). The results of this evaluation are documented in a stakeholder analysis matrix (Table 1), which is used to classify the stakeholders into three groups: highly influential supporter of the project, neutral about the project, and highly influential opponent of the project. This process can be used to describe groups of stakeholders (e.g. community, non-governmental organizations, etc.) or individuals making up a particular stakeholder group (e.g. members of the local community)."

Land use and access to land are limiting factors in economic development in the Western region of Ghana. Mining uses land during operations and then rehabilitates the land as part of ongoing operations and closure. Golden Star Resources Limited (GSR) aims to contribute to the sustainability of the local economy during its operations and then post-closure. Following a series of alternative livelihood initiatives, GSR reviewed the success of these programs and decided to focus on an oil palm project that uses out-growers to reach the local economy. The project started using small holdings that were individually managed. However, the ongoing effects were limited. Following a review of the options, the Golden Star Oil Palm Project was started using land committed to the pro-gram by the Bogoso Mine. The initial program covered 275 ha with over 40,000 trees with 300 people involved in the development. The Traditional Authorities have committed additional lands to the project to a planned total area of 18,000 ha.

Mine production systems (MPS) are characterized, more or less, by the following properties: uncertainty, subjectivity, impreciseness, polysemy, instability, indefiniteness and lack of data. From modern study aspect these MPS mathematically belong to the class of fuzzy systems. With this in mind, the usage of fuzzy sets is recommended as a methodology that treats impreciseness, indefiniteness and complexity of mine production systems in a satisfactory manner. Fuzzy modelling, discussed in this pa- per, is applied as a mathematical implement. The objective of the paper was to show production optimization in practice on the ex- ample of bauxite open pits where fuzzy linear programming (FLP) was used following the criterion per income. The variables in criterion function are linguistic variables while both variables and variable restrictions are presented by triangular fuzzy numbers (TFN). The term "satisfactory income" presented through triangle fuzzy numbers was introduced instead of "maximizing the income". sensitivity of the obtained solutions has been analysed

Condition monitoring is a viable troubleshooting practice among many industries to extend equipment performance, minimize unplanned downtime, reduce maintenance and repair time and costs, and increase related aspects of plant safety. But obstacles abound for mining, mineral-processing and cement operations striving to implement the technologies. Harsh machine environments can muddy efforts. High vibration in machinery can interfere with wide-spread rollout. Staff expertise or skills may be lacking. And costs may be prohibitive. Fault detection has emerged as a practical and cost-effective solution to identify process and machinery faults before failure interrupts productivity or jeopardizes worker safety. Fault detection can be a stand-alone system or connected to plant automation.

"Prospecting and Exploration. Since the Lake Superior ores occur in pockets or distinct bodies and vary much as to character and location, the actual mining of the ores is preceded by much work of an exploratory character. This work includes prospecting and exploration.Prospecting is the term generally applied to the quest for surface indications of ore, or the conditions which would warrant the expectation of finding ore in the vicinity. It includes such 'operations as geological examination, dip needle work, shallow test-pitting, and trenching. The ore bodies of the Mesabi Range are non-magnetic, and dip needle prospecting is therefore valueless. On the Cuyuna range, however, magnetic attraction as evidenced by the dip needle has been extensively employed as a guide to the location of ore deposits; in other localities it has found limited application.Drill Exploration. After the presence of an ore deposit is known or suspected, resort is generally had to exploration by means of diamond or churn drills. On the old ranges geological conditions generally make this manner of ascertaining the exact limits of an ore deposit impracticable; so, if two or three adjacent drill holes develop considerable depths of ore, the sinking of a shaft for underground exploration, development and mining is generally considered warranted. On the Mesabi Range, however, the flat-lying and comparatively shallow characteristics of the ore formation warrant much more extensive drill explorations. On this range, then, an ore body 'is almost invariably followed· out with the drills, and its limits are determined to the point where the complete plan of development can be worked out in advance of actual mining operations"

Pit slope designs at Nickel Plate Mine have used relatively steep interim and final wall slopes of 60 degrees overall. The rock is unusually strong and tough with most discontinuity sets being steeply dipping. An integrated program of monitoring and drainage has been used. Stopes of large extent which are generally unsupported occur on the property. For the most part, no deterioration of the stability of the stopes has occurred over the last 30 or more years. Mining methods through these areas have used a combination of fill s placed via VCR drop raises and crater blasting of the backs. One of the major challenges in mining through the stope areas is to maintain slope stability conditions and to reduce dilution of the higher value ore zones occurring immediately around the stope areas. Once every three years the eyes of the construction and mining industry?s turn to Munich, Germany for the bauma trade fair and exhibition. From April 19-25, Messe München International (MMI) will host the 29th edition of this massive show that, despite the recent recession and global financial struggles, has grown yet again. The show, which is completely booked, will take place on a record 555,000 m2 (5.9 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. More than 3,000 exhibitors are expected to make use of this event. To prepare for the show that highlights some of the largest and most impressive construction and mining equipment in the world, Messe München began working months in advance on getting the infrastructure on the open-air site ready, in time for the arrival of the gigantic machinery exhibits, which started to arrive in March. Part of the preparations include a new entrance at the northwest corner of the exhibition center that was built to regulate visitor flow better. This should help with bauma considering that in 2007 more than 500,000 visitors passed through the gates. ?Although in 2010 the construction machinery sector in many markets worldwide will be recovering only slowly from the recession, we are pleased to report that we are seeing strong demand for exhibition space. This shows that exhibitors regard participation in the world?s leading trade fair bauma as a must, although many are at present having to make cuts in their advertising and trade-fair budgets. We have been particularly surprised by the strong demand for space from exhibitors from markets like China, India and Turkey. The fair is fully booked and many more companies are on the waiting list,? said Eugen Egetenmeir, managing director of Messe München. More than 50 percent of the exhibitors at bauma 2010 come from countries outside of Germany. While the show?s primary focus is on the construction section, it is not as if the mining sector will be difficult to find. With some of the largest equipment in world on display in section C2 (Fig. 1), the mining industry is sure to be well-represented.

I propose to do three things today. First, take a broad look at the role of mining in the Latin American economy; then, review briefly the current situation in four principal metallic mineral exporting nations -- Chile, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela; and. finally, raise some, policy questions that seem to me to be important. The Role Of Latin America In World Mining First, let's consider Latin America's position in world mining markets. Latin America provides more than 5% of world output in 16 metals or ores, ranging from antimony and barite to Tungsten and Zinc. Latin America supplies a fifth or more of the world's antimony, beryl, bismuth, copper, fluorspar, silver and Tellurium.

Several factors need to come together in creating an integrate mining equipment dispatching system. At the hub of these factors ace the central dispatching formulas. This paper details the development of these central dispatching formulas and explores the combining of these formulas with other elements to create an integrated dispatching decision. WHY DISPATCHING? Truck dispatching implies and in reality should equate to mine equipment efficiency. Good truck dispatching will yield good mine equipment efficiency while poor truck dispatching will yield the alternative. Truck dispatching can either be automated through a computerized, process or it can be manual. Every mine with haul trucks has a truck dispatching system whether it is recognized or not. Even a system wherein the hauler operators determine where they are going for their next load is a truck dispatching system.

Destructive wave interference has been studied in theory for many years. In application however, limited information can be found. Recently, circumstances have enabled a multidisciplinary team to utilize electronic detonators and seismograph analysis to create destructive wave interference in an underground production blasting application. Springfield Underground, located in Springfield, MO, in conjunction with Orica, ETI, White Industrial Seismology, and the University of Missouri – Rolla has shown the ability to use destructive wave interference in underground blasting to reduce ground vibrations directly above. In order to develop additional reserves a reduction in vibration levels was necessary for tunneling under the Springfield Municipal Water Supply. The paper discusses the process by which the reduction in vibration was achieved in practice, as well as a technical explanation of the effects of destructive wave interference and sacrificial holes.

The 345 km long Taiwan High Speed Rail Project will connect the island’s two most populated cities, Taipei and Kaohsiung. Kaohsiung is the world’s third busiest port. The 23 km of alignment on Contract C230 requires the construction of 5,879 m of shallow mined tunnels ranging from 137 m to 1,285 m in length. All nine of these tunnels are mined using NATM methodology. Two of the tunnels, T01 and T08 are in the Toukoshan Formation. This paper will discuss the mining methods, ground support design, and the instrumentation installed to monitor and verify its effectiveness in the two aforementioned tunnels.

Problems of how to use artificial intelligence (AI) methods and expert systems (ES) to control complex industrial projects have lately become significant in practical terms. Mining ventilation systems undoubtedly belong to complex multi dimensional objects of control with stochastic nonstationary and nonlinear processes. Formal models based on automated ventilation control, do require awkward algorithmic solutions, moreover, a number of tasks become the operator's headache, and the quality of their solution depends on his experience and intuition. These tasks include: - identifying pre-accidental situations and determining their causes; - making well-grounded decisions with regard to changing ventilation regimes, forecast of mining operations taken account of; - controlling ventilation systems in emergency situations, e.g. when in accident, etc. It is in this context that we have for a number of years been investigating how to practically use AI methods for operative control in dynamic aero-and-gas mining processes, one of our research directions being devoted to working out a consulting programme for the ventilation system operator. Our researching and modeling problem was identification of aero-and-gas situation in different parts of ventilation network and its interpretation in order to determine possible causes for gas regime changing and unexpected consequences. We would single out the following stages in this task: I. Operative information procession coming to the data base from the sensors and analysis of hypothetical versions (using the associative rules base) with regard to factors which have caused significant parameter fluctuations (e.g. C%(t), H(t), Q(t) etc.)., 2. Selection of hypotheses in the knowledge base and forming conclusions in accordance with reliability scale. 3. Clarifying the obtained conclusions in dialogue with the operator. 4. Correcting the associative rules base.
