Leaching studies of low-grade manganese ore containing 31.77% Mn and 23.71 % Fe from Nishikhal, India, were carried out using pyritiferous lignite as a reductant in sulfuric acid medium. The variables studied were quantity of lignite, sulfuric acid concentration and temperature. Regression equations for the extraction of manganese and potassium were determined from 23 full factorial design data. The experimental conditions for the extraction of manganese were optimized using the steepest-ascent method. It was found that 99.03% of the manganese could be extracted in three hours with an ore to lignite ratio of 1:1.8, a sulfuric acid concentration of 1.9 M and a temperature of 99°C. INTRODUCTION The potential health impact from uranium milling operations is mainly associated with long-term releases of radioactive contaminants from the mill tailings.(1,2) The major mechanisms for mitigating these potential releases focus on increasing the tailings containment with the addition of migration barriers such as thick earthen covers and clay liners. Some limited investigation has also focused on reducing the radionuclide source terms. This alternative approach has some desirable features, but stringent cost requirements are placed upon source removal methods in order for them to be economically favorable. A cost effectiveness evaluation is presented herein, in which costs for containment methods are used to establish maximum cost guidelines for the source removal methods. The 230U decay chain, shown in Figure 1 contains the radioisotopes of major concern, 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn and its short-lived alpha-emitting daughters, When the uranium is removed in the milling process, these isotopes, which are normally not removed remain in the tailings solids. The general pathways to the environment from uranium mill tailings are depicted in Figure 2. The dominant pathways are radon to the atmosphere and radium and thorium to a groundwater aquifer. The magnitude of the contaminants released into these pathways can be characterized by the following parameters: 1. The 230Th and 226Ra content. 2. The emanating power for radon. The fraction of radon generated that is free to migrate. 3. The leach rates. Source reduction methods seek to reduce the magnitude of any or all of these parameters. In general the dose rates are proportional to the source terms. For radon production the source term is proportional to the product of the radium concentration, R, and the emanating power, E, so that the risk is reduced by the same factor that reduces RE. For example, if the radium content is reduced by 95 percent, but E is increased by a factor of two, then the dose rates are reduced by an order of magnitude. Selective flocculation was used to produce superclean zinc concentrate with minimized silica contamination. Research was carried out on a flotation concentrate from the Jersey Miniere Zinc Company (JMZ) in Gordonsville, Tennessee. The material was first dispersed with sodium silicate and then causticized tapioca starch was used to selectively flocculate the sphalerite, leaving the silica in suspension. This technique has been applied commercially to iron ore beneficiation but has never been used for processing zinc. The feed material assayed 0.45% Si02. Use of 0.56 kg/tonne (1.13 lb/st) of sodium silicate and 0.070 kg/tonne (0.141 lb/st) of causticized tapioca starch resulted in 98.2% zinc recovery in a purified zinc concentrate assaying 66.0% Zn and 0.24% silica. The present target level for silica contamination in JMZ zinc concentrates is 0.3% Si02. This work has shown that selective flocculation offers a potential method for cleaning flotation concentrates, particularly where low silica products are required.

Selection of a block size for a computerized 3 dimensional ore body model is an exercise in compromises. Larger blocks decrease the use of computer resources and decrease the variance of the block estimates. Smaller blocks increase the resolution of the model and the selectivity which can be used in the planning, but increase the variance of estimates in the individual blocks. A common rule is that blocks can be as small as one fourth the average sample spacing, however this ignores the interrelationship between the block size, the sample spacing, and the variogram model. This paper will explore this relationship Kriging estimation variance will be used as a comparative measure of estimate quality. Graphical techniques will be used to show that there is a point where smaller block sizes cease to contribute to the resolution of the model. A method of evaluating the consequences of block size decisions will be examined.

"Since entering the new century, China’s coal industry has witnessed the rapid development, and provided a reliable energy supply for the national economic and social development. But after the “golden decade” of rapid development, the coal industry now is facing overcapacity, low industrial concentration and production efficiency, high pressure of production safety and environmental protection and other prominent issues. Based on defining the connotation of highly-efficient recovery of coal resources, this paper established the relevant 8 indicators to reflect the highly-efficient recovery level of coal resources, summarized the present situation of China's coal resources recovery and the main problems, analyzed the development environment of China's coal industry under the new situation, and finally put forward the strategic measures to promote highly-efficient recovery of coal resources in China.1. Background Coal is the main energy in China. Since entering the new century, China's coal industry has made significant progress, and the level of production safety, resource recovery rate and mining mechanization increased significantly, which provided a reliable energy supply for the rapid development of the national economy. However, due to the changes of China's economic environment, slow growth of energy demand and other factors, some prominent contradictions in the coal industry have significantly restricted the healthy development of the industry. The first problem is serious overcapacity. In the past few years, 16 industries including coal, electric power, chemical and others have invested in coal mines. It is reported (Han 2016) that only during the nine years from 2005 to 2014, the fixed assets of coal industry increased totally more than 3.3 trillion RMB, which brought a large number of production capacity. Affected by the slowdown of economic growth and energy structure adjustment, Chinese coal demand has reached the peak platform and caused the overcapacity of coal supply, so shutting down the backward capacity is the most important task in the future. The second problem is the low efficiency of coal production. There are about 4.3 million coal mine workers in China, and the annual coal production per capita is less than 900 tons, while it was reported (EIA 2016) that the annual production per capita in the United States is more than 10 thousand tons. The third problem is that the green coal resources are not rich. Among the 1.53 trillion tons proven reserves, only about one third are green coal resources in accordance with the principle of ""safety, technology, environment and economy"". The coal resources with high quality and easily mining conditions are not abundant."

The waste phosphogypsum produced by Paradeep Phosphate Limited (PPL) at Paradeep (Cuttack, Orissa, India) consists primarily of calcium sulfate with small amounts of phosphoric acid, calcium fluoride and other harmful components. Presently these are dumped as waste. In this work, laboratory trials have been made to utilize the calcium sulfate present in the phosphogypsum to prepare usable products like ammonium sulfate, calcium carbonate and magnesium sulfate.

In the past, underground coal mine planning has traditionally focused on the mine design n aspects concerning safety and efficiency in the quest to produce low cost coal. Very little attention has been given to coal quality control aspects of mine planning at most of the underground coal mines within the U.S. With the enactment of the clean air act of 1970, the generally high sulfur content of coal has become a major concern for the coal-fired power plants in the east. Similarly, the ash and the BTU contents of coal are of equal importance from boiler efficiency standpoint. Thus, the time has come when the coal mine planning must incorporate the coal quality control aspects as well as the traditional safety and efficiency aspects.

"In August 2013, the Appraisal Practices Board of the U.S. Appraisal Foundation issued its “APB Valuation Advisory #4 - Identifying Comparable Properties,” which contains analysis and examples that may suggest a broader meaning of the term “comparable properties” than is current convention in real property value appraisal in the United States and internationally. The advisory is directed at the appraisal of real property of all kinds, including interests in mineral properties, as indicated by the inclusion of two mineral property appraisal papers in the appendix that lists suggestions for further reading.This paper firstly reviews as background the historical meaning of a comparable property, with its perceived constraints, against real-world examples of transacted mineral properties that are adjusted to subject properties to provide market value indications. The advisory’s findings are then examined and evaluated as to whether they may influence and benefit the work of mineral property appraisers, particularly in situations where their sales comparison analyses may be challenged. The conclusion is that the combination of constraints that the advisory’s findings specify for use of the term “comparable” will for mineral properties be met infrequently or rarely. As a result, mineral property appraisers are advised to avoid using the terms comparable or “comp” when referring to transactions of mineral properties that they analyze to derive data for appraising the value of their subject mineral properties. IntroductionA mineral property appraiser rarely finds a sale of a mineral property that meets the literal meaning of the term “comparable sale,” by being directly comparable to the subject property of the appraisal in all factors of significance in the determination of the value of the property interest being appraised. Real estate appraisers have long used a more liberal interpretation of the meaning of comparable sale and its commonly used abbreviation, “comp.” Real estate appraisers compare sales to their subject property on the basis of price per hectare or acre of land and price per square meter or square foot of building floor area. Adjustments totaling to within the range of +30 to -30 percent from the sale property to the subject, before factoring in the property area, have generally been viewed as appropriate for the sale to be considered a comparable sale."

"Over recent years, specifically following the MINER Act of 2006, an increasing number of manufacturers of underground mine seals in the United States have begun using a form of pumpable cement or shotcrete to create barriers separating the working and abandoned sections of underground coal mines. This seal material, while generally considered to be homogenous and solid, contains a network of microcracks, voids, and delaminations. Generally, it has been assumed that methane (CF4) leakage around these seals is a result of movement around the boundary interface between the seal and surrounding strata. Using a perfluorinated tracer compound, perfluoromethyl-cyclohexane (PMCH), the movement of gases can be monitored through seal material to observe how gases move though the material, both intact and with faulting in the material. This paper documents two large experiments where the movement of PMCH was monitored in the field, along with modeling confirmation using 3D visualization software. INTRODUCTION According to a report in 2007, there were over 14,000 active mine seals in underground U.S. coal mines alone (Zipf, Sapko, & Brune, 2007). These seals are used for both ventilation and safety purposes, to direct the flow of air away from the abandoned area of the mine and to help eliminate the propagation of explosions that can occur on the outby side of the mine seal. The atmosphere on the outby side of these seals typical consists of low levels of methane that have the potential of producing leakage along the face of the seal on the inby side. Methane leakage around mine seals has historically been attributed to the permeability between the seal and mine interface (McPherson, 1993). According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) between 2003 and 2012 an average of 17 deaths occurred annually in underground bituminous coals mines. The only time during the ten-year period where the fatalities were higher than the average was in 2006 and 2010, years which had three major explosions occurring in underground coal mines in West Virginia and Kentucky. Two of the explosions were propagated through the mine by seal failure or methane leakage around newly poured seals (Light, et al., 2007) (Gates, et al., 2006). These recent events, and new regulations regarding seal strength (MINER Act), have created a need to monitor the condition of underground mine seals. BACKGROUND Measuring the permeability of solid materials, such as concrete or seal materials, can be a valuable tool in the field of non-destructible testing (NDT). By using an inert gas, such as nitrogen, injecting the gas into a solid structure, and measuring the resultant flow rate and pressure differential, this can provide valuable information about the structure. Studies have shown permeability can be affected by the stresses applied to the structure, as well as temperature and moisture (Choinska, Khelidj, Chatzigeorgious, & Pijaudier-Cabot, 2007) (Abbas, Carcasses, & Olliver, 1999)."

Laboratory tests were conducted in a full-scale continuous miner test gallery to evaluate resulting dust levels for changes in face airflow, spray water quantity and pressure, and mining height. The minimum and maximum values tested for each parameter were as follows: airflows between 1.42 and 6.14 m3/sec, water flows between 56.8 and 132.5 lpm, nozzles pressures between 413 and 1379 kPa, and mining heights between 1.52 and 2.74 m. Each of these parameters were evaluated for four common spray system designs. Respirable dust samples were collected in the operator's cab on the miner and in the immediate return. Second-order polynomial models were used to represent expected dust levels and multiple stepwise regression was used to identify significant control parameters for inclusion in the models. Separate models were developed for dust levels at the operator and return locations and for each individual spray system. Interaction between control parameters and curvature effects were found in most models. The analysis indicated that at the operator location, airflow and mining height had the most significant impact on respirable dust levels. In the return, airflow and water pressure were typically the most significant parameters. The models developed for each spray system design can be used by mine operators to guide application of control parameters for a variety of operating conditions and mining heights.

The effects of bacterial adaptation and partial replacement of leaching solution on the rate and extent of bioleaching reactions of a complex sulfidic gold ore were investigated. The ore was first concentrated by bulk sulfide, flotation, and the sulfide concentrate was treated by bioleaching using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The residues from bioleaching were treated by cyanidation to extract the gold and silver. Bacterial adaptation before bioleaching significantly increased the rate and extent of bioleaching reactions. Similarly, the daily partial replacement of leaching liquor enhanced to a great extent the leaching rate, and in some cases, increases of up to ten fold were observed. Both bacterial adaptation and solution replacement increased the gold recovery by about 2-fold and that of silver by about 1.3-fold. In this work, more than 95% of the gold and more than 98% of the silver could be recovered from the sulfidic gold ore when bioleaching was used ahead of cyanidation, compared with 18.3% and 52.3% by direct cyanidation.

Application of a magnetic field was shown to be effective in controlling iron losses in pilot-scale cationic silica flotation in the processing of magnetic taconite concentrates. The design of a magnetic field distribution device and batch flotation test results using a 1.42m3 (50 cu. ft.) WEMCO cell are reported. Major losses of iron units in froth products were in the -25µm (500 mesh) fraction, and the application of a magnetic field decreased the flotation of fine magnetite, thereby improving the selectivity of separation. The “as received” sample was sufficiently magnetized and no further benefit was gained by magnetizing treatment. Selectivity was somewhat adversely affected by demagnetizing the sample, though its effect was minimal due to the magnetic field. The device is simple in construction, low cost and may be installed readily in existing equipment.

Newmont Mining Corporation started as one man's investment vehicle. William Boyce Thompson, Newmont's founder, was already a millionaire many times when he incorporated his existing Newmont company in Delaware in 1921. The initial stake in the company was $8 million in capital contributed by Thompson and several close associates. In its infancy the company was truly a holding company. It did not operate or manage any properties. This situation changed drastically over time. By 1939 Newmont was actively mining 12 gold mines in North America. The following year, the first copper mine that Newmont ever managed directly, came into full production in South Africa. The period after World War I1 was a glorious one for Newmont. Plato Malozemoff took the helm of the company, and expanded its operations over the next 30 years into copper in Arizona, oil and gas in the U.S. and the North Sea, into domestic coal and thankfully, into significant gold operations.

Guidelines are presented for the selection, handling and regeneration of activated carbon used in gold recovery operations. The guidelines are based on Calgon Carbon Corporation's own investigations and experience gained in working with gold mine operators all over the world. Gold adsorption rate and adsorption capacity are shown to be independent variables thereby requiring testing of both properties when selecting activated carbon. Means of measuring these properties are provided. Historical activity tests on activated carbon are shown to be minimally useful in selecting carbon for gold recovery. Proper thermal regeneration techniques to maximize recovery of adsorption rate without weakening the carbon structure are suggested. Simple positive means of measuring efficiency of regeneration are presented. The subject of hardness measurement as a predictor of "in process" abrasion is discussed. The cost/benefit issue of carbon activity level is addressed.

"Prevalence of lung disease in younger miners surprised industry regulators, congressional members, researchers and black lung clinic staff members. Mitigation researcher focused on low-coal mining in the Appalachian regions until Miners Colfax Medical Center (MCMC) Black Lung Clinic examinations discovered 25 of 72 Wyoming coal miners with lung disease. To reverse recent upward trend in lung disease, research programatic have been directed at reducing exposure to respirable “float” dust. This paper suggests broadening the scope of research to include boundary detection in efforts to improve outcomes. Beginning with a better understanding of biochemistry of anaerobic bacteria methylation processes precipitating sulfur and heavy metals into thin seam boundary layers. Expanding research and development objective to focused on minimization of bit-pick crushing cone volume and preventing mining thin boundary coal layers and out-of-seam dilution. Black lung clinical evaluations of miner will confirm outcomes directed towards reduced occupational disease and smoke stack emissions. INTRODUCTION Miner exposer to bit-tip crushing cone volume, fragmentation and auger movement generated respirable “float” dust and boiler emissions are related science-technology –engineering-mathematics (STEM) problems. Formidable but not intractable problems are driven by oxidation of upper flood plain elements in the periodic table and biochemical metabolic presses occurring in coal basin. Because of burial compaction, quartz and trace heavy metals (Fe2+, Mg2+) are concentrated in thin seam boundary layers. By not cutting through thin boundary coal layer and out-of-seam into hard quartz containing rock layers, miner lung disease and smoke stack emissions are minimized. Cutting bit-pick elastic wave hydrodynamic principle force vectors in the coal layer must be aligned to minimize respirable dust generation, constrained by fragmentation size. Dust abatement by water spray and machine design are effective; but for, failure to address cutting cone dust volume generation and its distribution along run-of-mine (ROM) transportation systems the boiler. Real-time precision thickness measurements by integrated cutting drum (icDrum) sensor, machine man-interdiction from a dust free control room, is a cost effective way to prevents respirable dust exposure. The recommended STEM research and demonstration initiative addresses issues raised by discoveries of increased rate of lung disease discovered in young miners and concerns over emissions from coal-fired electric generation stations (Global Warming). In-mine demonstrations must be validated by on-site MCMC mobile Black Lung Clinic data acquisition and analysis."

Whole ore or other process streams are being transported from mines to remote processing facilities for multiple reasons, such as improved project economics, maximum utilization of capital, and minimization of environmental risk. Case studies will be presented from a variety of operations. Glenbrook Nickel processes ore from their deposit and receives ore from New Caledonia, crushes and dries the ore, and transports it inland to the smelter. The Mule Canyon and Rosebud ore bodies truck-haul their ores to the Lone Tree and Twin Creeks processing plants. Pegasus Gold hauls their Diamond Hill ore to their Montana Tunnels facilities, and Sierrita pumps solution to an existing tank house 8 miles away for electrolytic recovery.

INTRODUCTION Traditionally mineral processing equipment has been procured based on (equipment) specifications prepared by the engineers. As newer materials of construction are being used for equipment manufacture and plant control systems become more sophisticated, the need for thorough and detailed specifications is greater than ever. For example, it is not uncommon to find plants looking at grinding circuits consisting of semiautogenous mills with variable speed, gearless, drives of large horsepower. Technical specifications for the mill, wrap- around motor and control system must, therefore, be carefully prepared to ensure that the respective equipment supplied by vendors meets overall grinding needs. Various engineering and design companies have expended considerable time and effort in developing the specification format. Equipment manufacturers have also given significant effort to developing data sheets aimed at collecting information regarding not only the duty of the equipment, but also the conditions under which it will be operated. As engineers moved from one company to another, the specification format became cross-fertilized and further developed. As a result, specifications on file with various engineers have improved considerably over a period of time. Equipment specifications from earlier projects are commonly used as a basis for tailoring new ones. To keep equipment specifications short, general technical considerations are often compiled as separate specifications. For example, general considerations applicable to the design, manufacture and supply of the mechanical equipment are consolidated under "Standard Requirements for Mechanical Equipment” and included along with that specified for purchase. As the economic feasibility of the project has been established during earlier studies, purchase-related activities can be initiated following completion of the specifications. Procurement itself is a major activity, however, in this chapter only those activities directly related to the purchase of equipment will be discussed. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are developing a coal pillar rib rating (CPRR) technique to measure the integrity of coal ribs. The CPRR characterizes the rib composition and evaluates its impact on the inherent stability of the coal ribs. The CPRR utilizes four parameters: rib homogeneity, bedding condition, face cleat orientation with respect to entry direction, and rib height. All these parameters are measurable in the field. A rib data collecting procedure and a simple sheet to calculate the CPRR were developed.

Various pyrometallurgical methods for treating Ilmenite and Zircon concentrates are reviewed. Laboratory experiments, using a thermal plasma reactor, have been performed to evaluate: the conversion of ilmenite to TiC or TiC-Fe and the conversion of zircon to ZrC or ZrC-SiC. Relax: the world today is not running short of many mineral commodities, even though prices are spiraling upward. Einstein?s observation still holds true that everything is still relative, as long as one can pass on the incremental costs of production to the consumer. However, a strong consensus exists among many of the companies comprising the minerals processing industry that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the easy-to-mine, high-quality resources that make juicy profit margins, which shareholders like. For the most part, the resource cherries have all been picked, and established mineral processing companies that are exhausting their reserves, or in the process of looking to add reserves so as to create longevity for their company, have no recourse but to look long and hard at what were once considered the dregs of the earth. Even end users, such as steel companies, are now looking to become ?miners,? to establish captive iron ore resources. Owning a captive resource facilitates a dependable supply of feed materials, which translates into effective cost control and a guarantee for a thriving sustainable business in the future.
