Abstract The consumption of barytes in certain paints polyurethane foams, seamless, flooring, glass, brake linings, plastisol caskets for food containers and in fluids used for gastrointestinal X-ray examinations rely on tie unique properties of barium sulfate, There are no readily available mineral substitutes. Barytes are also the essential raw material for the manufacture of industrially important barium chemicals. High quality barite ore has become scarce throughout the world. Processing ore into quality end products is both capital and energy intensive. These factors have tended to limit availability and increase prices which have encouraged the use of alternates and restricted market growth.

This paper deals with theoretical considerations and practical applications of ventilation network calculations, based on mass flow rates and performed by computer simulation in our deepest operating mine - Creighton. The paper also deals with natural ventilation. In the usually accepted air-flow theory, the air is assumed to behave like an incompresssible medium. This introduces considerable error where temperature and pressure changes are great. Therefore, any study of the air flow in deep mines, must take into account compressibility. Basing ventilation calculations on mass flow allows a distinction to be made between air leakage and such quantity changes which occur due to air density changes. The energy which is required to convey one pound of air through a mine can be obtained by adding all head losses hL (ft-lb) of the ventilation paths through which the air flows. However, this total energy will not be correctly expressed in a compressible fluid by summing all pressure losses PL = hL x d (ft-lb/ft3 = lb/ft2) d = density. There is a law of mass conservation, but no law of volume conservation. Natural ventilation is caused by the conversion of heat into mechanical energy and not by the difference in upcast and downcast densities, as often believed. In an existing mine natural ventilation can be determined correctly by plotting a pressure volume diagram and measuring the area ? [ ] vdP = hN, where v = specific volume, or by measuring the sum of all friction losses and work provided by a fan. These procedures are tedious. The natural ventilation head (hN) can be approximated by the equaticn hN =[ ] tdZ. Where T is the average absolute temperature, t air temperature and Z elevation. In Prof. R. Greuer's computer program this determination of hN is automatically done for every mesh of the network.

Ice frozen from a dilute chemical solution is mechanically weaker than ice frozen from pure water. This phenomenon is the basis of a practical method for reducing the strength of a mass of frozen coal. If a chemical additive is applied to moist coal, prior to its shipment during freezing weather, the resulting frozen coal can be more easily broken than in the absence of the chemical additive. This greatly expedites the unloading and handling of coal during winter. There has been considerable research into the nature and mechanical strength of ice frozen from various solutions. The literature relating to this process has been reviewed as has the literature relating to the chemical treatment of coal and mineral particulates. Some important articles are discussed and speculations are made about the nature of the ice-weakening process. A laboratory evaluation of the effects of chemical additives on the mechanical strength of ice and frozen coal has been made. An apparatus designed for this purpose is described, and some results obtained with it are discussed.

Most wet mines face unquantified water costs as well as the obvious wing costs. Both kinds of cost are multiplied by work at greater depth and by higher unit prices. This intensified challenge merits renewed or perhaps altogether new response. Any practicable way to reduce inflow tackles both obvious and unquantified costs. Ten groups of possible ways to do it are cited. Most have been demonstrated. Two are known from work other than mining. Surely new means can be found. Here are opportunities for operators of wet mines!

United States Steel's Cumberland Coal Operations is located in Greene County in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania. The mine and related facilities have been in operation since September of 1977. Production from this mine, U. S. Steel's first commercial coal mining venture, will eventually reach a level of 2.72 million mt of clean coal per year and is totally committed to electric power generation. Cumberland is a slope mine in the Pittsburgh seam and is mined by continuous mining machines and longwall. The coal from the mine is trans- ported by belt to the surface, taken through a rotary breaker for initial preparation, and stored in raw coal silos. It is then processed through the preparation plant and taken to a clean coal silo where it is held for train loading. Cumberland Mine operates its am 28.16 km railroad to transport the coal to the Monongahela River. The unit train consists of thirty-one 90 mt cars. The coal, once loaded on barges, is then shipped to the customer. Cumberland Mine is one of the most modern coal preparation and unit train loading systems in the nation. The preparation plant is de- signed to receive coal from the silos at a rate of 720 at per hour. The +6.35 mm material is screened out and cleaned in a Daniels heavy media vessel with two 3.35 m weirs. Minus 6.35 mm material is fed to sixteen #88 Deister concentrating tables. The cleaned coal from this circuit is dewatered, and all effluents from the mechanical dewatering report to the classifying Cyclone sump for classification through ten 35.6 cm cyclones. The cyclones overflow material (-150 mesh) is processed through two banks of three 8.5 m3 Denver D.R. flotation machines. The cyclone underflow pro- duct (28-1 0 mesh) is processed in two banks of 5 six 2.83 m Denver Sub A machines. The clean flotation product is then dewatered in Bird screen bowl centrifuges, blended with the other clean coal size fractions, and the total plant product further dewatered in a thermal dryer.

The recently completed major modifications and additions to Reserve Mining Company's taconite concentrating process incorporate a totally new control system. Design of the new control scheme is centered on reliability, versatility, centralization, and optimization. The design objectives were achieved through a distributed control system based on a network of independent field located micro-processor based control systems connected to a central control room. Operation of each micro-processor can be interrogated and modified from the central control room by the operator or by either of two computer systems. The two computer systems handle logging, alarming, specialized sequenced controls, and complex process optimization routines.

Most people, when Borates are mentioned, mentally visualize the famous twenty mule team (really eighteen mules and two horses), trudging across the Mojave Desert or "she burns green Rosie, we are rich." Actually, however, the first use of borax was prior to Babylonian times. Their emissaries had orders to bring borax Iron the Gobi desert for use as a flux by the Babylonian goldsmiths. The borate mineral imported for this is not known but probably was borax. The ancient Persians and Arabians knew about borax and the Arabic word "Baurach" appears in a two thousand year old manuscript. The Sanscrit word for borax was tincana which has been corrupted to tincal. The Chinese were using borax as a glaze in three-hundred B.C. Marco Polo brought the first borax, along with gunpowder and spaghetti, from Mongolia to Europe in the late 1300's. Borax from Tibet was imported to Europe for nearly 500 years. In 1772 boric acid (sassolite) was discovered around Tuscany, Italy as a precipitant from volcanic steam vents. Production of boric acid started there about 1815 and provided the sole competition to the borax from Tibet. Borate deposits in Turkey have been known and exploited on a small scale since the 13th century. It is only recently that the operations are being modernized and production increased. About 1836, borax minerals were found in Chile and Argentina with borax production starting in 1852 in Chile and in Argentina in 1886. During the latter half of the 19th Century, Chile was the principle world producer of borax.

As part of the Bureau of Mines research on identification of asbestos fibers, a method was discovered for removing asbestos fibers from water. This report describes this process and its theory of operation. The surface charge of amphibole minerals in potable water was found to be negative, and in common with most other silicate minerals, the isoelectric point of amphibole asbestos fibers lies in the pH range 4 to 6. Magnesia is one of the rare oxides with a high isoelectric point of about 11. The surface of magnesium oxide will, therefore, be positively charged in water at pH 6 to 6, while the electric charge an. amphibole asbestos fibers is negative. Because of the electrical attraction of these oppositely charged solids, it was possible to remove negatively charged asbestos fibers from water by percolating water that contained suspended-asbestos through a porous bed of magnesium oxide particles. A bed of 100/200-mesh MgO was added to a glass tube with a cotton plug. Aqusous suspensions of 1 to 10 ppm cummingtonite asbestos (amosite), crocidolite, and chrysotile were percolated through this porous plug of MgO. Even though chrysotile is positively charged below pH 11, MgO is an effective filter medium for removing it. The highly basic MgO appears to cause the chrysotile to flocculate and attach to particles within the bed. Scanning electron photomicrographs indicated that essentially complete removal of the fibers from water was accomplished. Other materials tested as contact filter media and found to be ineffective or only partially effective were sand, calcite, carbon, diatomaceous earth, and cellulose. Acidic alumina collected amphibole fibers but not chrysotile fibers.

The need for a separate ventilation department within the management team was recognized by the management of U. S. Pipe and Foundry before the company was purchased by Jim Walter Corporation in January, 1970. Because the coal beds of the deep underground coal properties owned by Jim Walter Resources lay 1300 to 2200 feet below the surface, efficient mine ventilation practices are essential through shaft openings varying from 16 to 22 feet in diameter. The extremely high methane gas quantity indicated to be in the coal bed because of the depth of cover and documented by various U. S. Bureau of Mines tests and demonstrated by early mining proved the need to implement this early management decision. At U. S. Pipe and Foundry mine ventilation was a function of the Mining Engineering Department with ventilation personnel assigned to the mine receiving their day to day work assignments from the mine manager or mine foreman. At Jim Walter Resources, the General Manager - Ventilation reports to the Senior Vice President, Mining Engineering, who reports directly to the President, Mining Division, Figure 1 (Company Organization Chart). Position descriptions are static; however positions are dynamic and consequently the degree of emphasis of specific duties and responsibilities change depending not only upon the aptitude of the individual performing the job but also upon his ability to meet the needs of his supervisors; and ultimately upon his ability to react to the economic forces directing our society. The following describes the duties and responsibilities of the General Manager - Ventilation, Figure 2.

Smooth, compact, dendrite-free, 24-h zinc deposits have been electrowon from zinc chloride electrolyte using a diaphragm cell. The cell consisted of sealed anode compartment con- taining DSA anodes which were separated from an open cathode compartment by Dynel cloth membranes. Fresh electrolyte was fed to the cathode compartment where zinc deposition onto an aluminum cathode was aided by air-sparging. The catholyte passed through the diaphragm into the anode compartment from which chlorine gas and spent anolyte were withdram.

It is shown that the dust exposure of all underground workers varies greatly from day to day even though each man did the same job in the same working place each day. The variability follows a logarithmic normal distribution with a geometric standard deviation of about 1.6 for the three dust assessments; total respirable dust, respirable combustible dust and respirable quartz dust in both mines studied. The variability was homogeneous for all men and most jobs. The differences between men doing the same job was found not to be significant and it is suggested that the dust sampling program should determine the average for each job and use this as the best estimate of the exposure for each man.

An investigation of multi-shaft airflow problems by the author in 1976 (1) was presented in the hope of arousing considerable written comment, but in fact-. only one contribution (2) was forthcoming. The investigation in this paper is taken several stages fur¬ther, because the matter is of major importance in many American hard rock mines with complex networks extending over thousands of meters vertically. The examples used have all been generated thermodynamical¬ly and checked by motive column (denisty) calculations. Dry air has been used to reduce the amount of time spent on the rather complex calculations, but it has been shown (3) that the principals developed apply equally well to air/vapor/water mixtures. Initially the subject is investigated using both thermodynamic and motive column analyses. The latter part of the paper concentrates on a motive column presentation. Both methods are, of course, equally valid and give identical answers to any situation when correctly applied, as is shown in the worked examples.

The first phase of an investigation of the chemical composition of subsurface water and the hydrochemical processes in and near the abandoned Nordic tailings at Elliot Lake, Ontario, was conducted in 1979. The Nordic area, which covers 85 hectares with an average thickness of 10 m and overlies deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sand, contains 15 million tonnes of tailings with 4-7% pyrite. Nests of standpipe piezometers installed at three locations on the tailings indicate that seepage through the tailings is predominantly downward. The water table in the tailings slopes from the north side of the tailings dam, where it is within a metre of surface to the south side near the tailings dam, where it is approximately 10 m below surface. When they were deposited during the period from 1957 to 1968, the tailings contained pore water at a pH of about 8 resulting from neutralization treatment in the mill. At the three piezometer nests, the pH increases from 3 near the water table to 7 near the bottom of the tailings. The pore water in the tailings is gradually becoming acidic because of oxidation of pyrite in the zone above the water table. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn and Pb are high in the shallow acidic zone and much lower in the deeper neutral zone. Concentrations of 226Ra range from 30 to 230 pCi/L. At the three sites concentrations of major ions in the permeable sand a short interval beneath the tailings indicate 226Ra presence of tailings seepage, but Ra concentrations are only 2 to 8 pCi/L. Greater downward penetration of 226Ra probably occurs in the area closer to the tailings dam. Monitoring of a network of multilevel bundle piezometers installed in permeable sand that extends southward from beneath the tailings indicates the occurrence of a plume of tailingsderived water containing high concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe and S04 that extend 400 m downgradient from the tailings dam. The total dissolved solids decline from 20,000 at the dam to less than 500 mg/L at the identifiable downgradient periphery of the plume. A much smaller but distinct plume of water with high heavy metal concentrations and 226Ra in the range of 10 to 130 pCi/L extends from beneath the dam for a distance of 15 m. The pH of the groundwater in this heavy metal-radium plume is 4 to 5, whereas elsewhere in zone of groundwater with high dissolved solids, the pH is above 6. The new OSH regulations concerning ground ward monitoring of underground coal mines has been the source of many concerns for the mining industry. Because the regulations were initially written at the federal level but are being administered at the state level, considerable confusion exists within the industry as to what is actually required. Based on the preparation and submission of over 30 monitoring plans for existing deep mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, we now have a very good feel for the detail the monitoring plans, as well as the costs to im plement the plans. We do not, however, feel confident in our evaluations of the long-term impact the ground water monitoring regulations may have on the industry.

INTRODUCTION This paper discusses two uranium tailings waste disposal studies that reflect the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulatory actions and their changing requirements during the mid to late 1970's. Present guidelines require that all new uranium tailings impoundments be designed and constructed to eliminate, to the extent that it is reasonably achievable, exposures and risks to the public from the tailings. This includes positive measures for control of seepage losses from the impoundment and for control of radiological releases caused by wind and water erosion. Long-term stability of the reclaimed impoundment is also a very important requirement. That is, it is intended that the tailings impoundment, once it is reclaimed, will require little or no care or maintenance as long as the uranium tailings remain a hazard. Principally because of the long-term stability objective, the NRC has now identified subsurface burial of the tailings as the "prime option" for tailings disposal. The environmental implications of these proposed regulatory actions are obviously desirable. The economic implications the actions may have on a particular project are not always so obvious because they are so dependent on environmental suitability of site conditions. Selection of a site with favorable topographic, geologic and hydrologic conditions will usually result in the most economically and environmentally attractive alternative for tailings disposal. The first project discussed in this paper was initiated before the NRC guidelines had been developed to favour subsurface burial. At the beginning, seepage and radon emission control requirements were moderate. Constraints were imposed on the design by site topography, geology, and project capitalization considerations, factors which were dealt with according to straightforward engineering and design principles. More serious constraints were imposed by changing regulatory requirements. Unlike the more usual engineeringrelated constraints, regulatory requirements were upgraded during the design process, causing the design itself to undergo numerous modifications. The second project was initiated after the NRC proposed regulations had become better defined and below grade burial appeared to be the preferred

The recent trend in the ventilation of deep under- ground metal mines in the United States is to rely more and more on refrigeration for air cooling. This paper describes the layout and the economics of the refrigeration method used by Hecla Mining Company at the Star Mine. An economic analysis must compare the benefits of an engineering system against the costs. The benefits of refrigeration, for example, are increased production rates, a better safety record, improved employee moral, and generally lower airflow requirements. Air-conditioning costs include capital expenditures for equipment, labor and supply costs for maintenance, and power costs for machine operation. A study of whether or not to install refrigeration becomes academic when a mine reaches the critical ventilation depth1 (the depth at which adiabatic compression alone produces station temperatures equal to the desired stope temperatures). Ventilation planning alternatives for such mines, including the Star Mine, are limited to the different methods of refrigeration usage. In this case study of the Star Mine, the refrigeration layout is described in detail. After the system performance is discussed, air-conditioning costs are calculated. The paper then concludes with a cost- benefit analysis of the Star Mine refrigeration system.

Since the 1975 International Mine Ventilation Congress in Johannesburg there has been a trend in South Africa towards making the mine ventilation departments responsible for monitoring the total environment. This includes the taking of noise and illumination measurements and there is in fact a debate taking place as to whether the departmental title should be changed to 'Environmental Control Department'. The organisers of the 2nd international Mine Ventilation Congress have decided that noise and illumination will not be included as Congress subjects and 'Total Environment' includes only those facets which are open to debate at the Congress. The choice of mine is significant in that while most Congress papers from South Africa will be devoted either to coal mining or to the somewhat unique deep level gold mines, Prieska Copper Mine is a mine which can easily be identified with similar mines in many other parts of the world. The mine is situated some 750 km south west of Johannesburg and about 600 km north east of Cape Town. Current production (ore and waste) is about 340 000 tons per month and the total underground labour force is just over 2 000. The ore body is a massive sulphide, the main minerals being copper and zinc and the method of mining is sub-level open stoping. Daily average surface temperature conditions range from 85°F (29.5°C) dry bulb and 69.8°F (21°C) wet bulb in mid-summer to 42°F (5.5°C) dry bulb and 36.5°F (2.5°C) wet bulb in mid winter. The information presented in-this paper is limited to what can be gathered by mine ventilation staff as part of an on-going exercise and is obviously not as comprehensive as would be the case if a fully equipped research establishment were to become involved. The paper will be divided into three sections 1) Gases 2) Dust 3) Heat In each section statutory and/or other standards will be set down followed by a discussion of assessment and in some cases control methods.

Though installations of main mine fans vary widely, the commonest installation is of a surface exhaust fan connected to an upcast shaft some distance below its collar by a horizontal fan drift bending sharply. downwards near its junction with the shaft. The junction of the fan drift with the shaft often causes considerable shock pressure loss if not properly designed. In one of the major coal mines in India circulating 180 m3/s of air through the mine a pressure drop of 229 Pa out of the total fan pressure of 568 Pa occurred at this junction while in a smaller gold mine circulating 9.4 m3/s it was 147 Pa out of a fan-drift pressure of 382 Pa. With larger mines circulating larger volumes of air, ill designed fan drifts can lead to considerable wastage of the power of ventilation. Shock loss at the junction of fan drifts with exhaust shafts depends on (1) the angle of deflection of the bend, (2) sharpness of the corners (both inner and outer) at the junction, (3) the degree of contraction of the flow-stream which depends on the cross- sectional area ratio of the shaft and the fan drift as well as the amount of leakage through the shaft collar. It must be noted here that the friction pressure loss in the bend is negligible compared to the shock pressure loss.

The Trombetas bauxite deposits were discovered by ALLAN, as from the original work of the geologists Drs. E. E. GREIG and 3.A. STAARGAARD on the axis of the Amazon river, between Manaus and Santarem - (see fig. 1). With research licences obtained in 1965 by the SANTA RITA BAUXITA - a subsidiary of ALAN a group of Brazilian geologists, under the supervision of IGOR MOUSASTICOUSHVILLY, begins researches on the areas of Parintins, Juruti and Mathias with unsatisfactory results. In 1966, photographs obtained from the US Air Force and the Brazilian Oil Company PETROBRAS -, covering an Amazon region between Parintins, Santarem and north of Trombetas river, permitted the identification of a great number of plateaux between the Nhamunda and the Trombetas rivers. Based on this information, a research group has worked intensively from 1966 to 1967 allowing the discovery of the trihydrated bauxite in a quite large area. After five years of intense work and analysis of approximately 56.000 samples, near 500 million of tonnes of bauxite are evaluated on the several plateaux of the, area, thus insuring the commercial exploration of these deposits. Such discovery places Brazil among the detainers of the main bauxite stocks of the world and as a potential exporter.

The Ventilation Branch is engaged in a project to determine if low level carbon monoxide monitors used for early detection and warning of fire in a coal mine conveyor belt entry can provide protection equivalent to that of thermally actuated point type heat sensors commonly used for fire detection. A series of tests were conducted to determine the required operating parameters, such as sensor spacing and alarm levels of detected carbon monoxide to provide equivalency between' these methods of fire detection. This report summarizes the results of these tests.
