A systematic approach to the analysis of alternative methods of ventilating and cooling large hot mines is presented. The important factors that have a bearing on ventilation and cooling requirements and practices, such as air flow through the mine, geographical distribution of eat loads, and micro-ventilation considerations, are dealt with. The analysis of these factors leads to definitive ventilation and cooling strategies, air and water process design, specifications of details, and designs of the associated plant and equipment.

The Gulf Coast States ranging from South Texas to Alabama contain vast resources of lignite ranging in energy content from about 4000 to 7000 Btu/lb (as-received) with sulfur content ranging from about 0.5 to 2 percent. Currently, the strip mining rate is about 35 million tons per year in Texas and essentially zero in the other Gulf Coast states. Estimates of future mining rates are as high as 310 million tons per year by the year 2000 with 240 being in Texas. In this paper, we examine the life cycle of the surface mineable lignice based on the most recent estimates of surface mine recoverable resources with two scenarios. The first indicates that a 310 million tpy rate could be sustained for only 15 years while the second scenario suggests that the 310 million tpy could be sustained for 25 to 30 years. If lignite resources are required beyond those that are surface mineable, the deep basin lignite will be developed. Five strategies for developing deep basin lignite are discussed.

Alunite, KA13(SO4)2(OH)6, was used from the 15th century until early in the present century as a source of potash alum and aluminum sulfate. Since early in this century its use for this purpose has declined to virtually nil with acid treatment of bauxite or clay replacing alunite as a source of alum. During the First World War alunite served as an emergency source of potassium sulfate fertilizer in the United States and Australia. More recently, alunite has been investigated as a nonbauxite ore of aluminum, with potassium sulfate and sulfuric acid as recoverable byproducts. The Soviet Union established a commercial-scale plant in the mid-1960s producing cell-grade alumina from alunitic ore and recovering byproduct potassium sulfate and sulfuric acid. Interest in nonbauxite ores, including alunite, is expected to continue in countries that presently are dependent on imports of bauxite or alumina to support their aluminum industries. The US has the largest aluminum producing and fabricating industry in the world but imports more than 90% of its aluminum-bearing raw materials. This chapter reviews the status of alunite as a potential source of aluminum with byproduct fertilizer, and the resources available to support this industry, whenever this becomes economically feasible. Historical Background Alunite has received little attention until recently, yet for centuries it held a higher place than many of the industrial minerals considered essential today. The deposits of alunite at Tolfa, northwest of Rome, were mined almost continuously from 1462 until about the middle of the present century (DeLaunay, 1907; Lombardi, 1977). The potash alum made from the alunite, called Roman alum, was a valued commodity in international trade, being used in the making of paper, in tanning leather, and as a mordant in textile dyeing. The industry at Tolfa is said to have been controlled by the Vatican and was a source of revenue for the Papal State until fairly recent times (Lombardi et al., 1977). Since early in the present century, the preferred method for making alum has been by acid treatment of bauxite, clay, or other aluminous material, so that alunite has fallen into near-total disuse as a source of alum chemicals. Appreciable quantities of mixed alunite-kaolin rock still are quarried in the Tolfa district for use by the Italian cement industry (Lombardi and Mattias, 1979), but the role of this material in the making of Italian cement is not clear. A large deposit of alunite-bearing rock in Chekiang province, mainland China, is said to have yielded a "great quantity" of alum over a period of several centuries (Yih, 1931). During the 19th century, alunite deposits in France, Spain, Australia, and other countries were exploited as raw material for making potash alum and aluminum sulfate. Interest in alunite was revived during the First World War, not for alum, but as an emergency source of potassium sulfate fertilizer. Large veins of nearly pure alunite had just been discovered on Alunite Ridge, 11 km southwest of Marysvale in Piute County, Utah (Butler and Gale, 1912), and these were quickly brought into production for making potash fertilizer to replace supplies cut off from the famous deposits at Stassfurt, Germany. An estimated 225 kt of Marysvale alunite was mined and processed at that time (Callaghan, 1973). Similarly, Australian alunite deposits were mined as a source of potash fertilizer during both world wars (Hall, 1978).

Current state-of-the-art microweighing technology represented by the Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) is utilized as the basis for a new generation of Personal Dust Exposure Monitors (PDEM's). Two design configurations are presented. The first is an end-of-shift analysis system which uses small TEOM-PDEM cannisters that replace the filter cartridges in the current PDEM system. All other components carried by the miner (cyclone preseparator and pump) are the same. After the shift the TEOM cannister is plugged into an interface box which enables a minicomputer to automatically identify the unit, determine the dust mass increase during the shift, compute the shift average dust mass concentration, and print out and/or store the data. The second design is a real-time TEOM-PDEM system which is capable of operation over a 10-hour shift and on demand display real-time dust concentration level, time weighted average, and shift average concentration. As a result of the design study, a prototype end-of-shift analysis system was fabricated and delivered to the Bureau of Mines. A description of this system which consists of six TEOM cannisters, interface electronics and minicomputer is given. The system represents a significant advance in the dust monitoring program in terms or accuracy and automation.

Principal mineral products in the Dominion of Fiji were gold, silver, pit and quarry construction materials, and cement. In 1981, the combined value of these commodities accounted for about $11.6 million,2 over 85% of the total value of mineral output. Production of cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products increased substantially above the 1980 level. Mining bated on gold production was decreasing, and employment in the industry was declining. The better grade deposits in the one active mine were worked out, and only another 10 years' production at current rates was estimated to remain. While the high world gold price of 1979-80 led to intensive exploration, there has been little sum.

This paper reviews the role of oxygen potential and the advances that have been made in the application of tonnage oxygen in copper smelting. Brief reference is made to reaction kinetics before attention is turned to the thermodynamic considerations in copper melting to illustrate the importance of oxygen and. oxygen potential in the component parts of the overall smelting process. The chemical potential diagram for the Cu-Fe-S-O-Si02 system is used to elucidate the difference b etween the conventional matte smelting process and the modern continuous processes. A progressive oxidation scale' is constructed to show the common elements which exist, and the matte grades produced, during the smelting of concentrates to blister copper in commercially available copper smelting processes and those under development. The common route in producing blister copper from molten mattes, regardless of process, is illustrated on the Cu-Fe-S equilibrium phase diagram. The essential features of oxygen enrichment, in terms of its effect on combustion conditions (i.e. oxidation of fuel and sulphide minerals) and the heat balance are outlined. The benefits of oxygen enrichment are listed. The influence of tonnage oxygen and its effect on productivity, fuel savings, gas volume and strength in various copper melting processes are examined as a state-of-the-art review. Reference is made to the economics of tonnage oxygen utilization.

"In the 1950s, Canada produced more than ninety-five percent of the non-communist world's nickel and achieved dominance in terms of production, technology and pricing policies.Over the past thirty years there have been dramatic changes in the nickel industry to the extent that Canadian production is now less than thirty per cent of the total.In this document we have presented statistics relevant to this transformation and reviewed the technology, particularly with regards to energy and environmental considerations.Under the new market conditions nickel producers are likely to face more difficult competition than they have encountered in the past.The economic scene and measured nickel reserves dictate that for the purpose of increasing production, new nickel smelters will not be built in Canada in the foreseeable future. However, in order to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions, Canadian nickel smelters will possibly go through some modifications or rebuilding.IntroductionThis paper presents a review of the Canadian nickel industry in relation to the world nickel industry. Major changes are described which have occurred in the characteristics of the nickel market over the last thirty years. The pre sent status of the nickel market with respect to Forecasting future trends is reviewed and attempts are made to predict what further changes will take place in the next two decades. Comparisons are made of the economics of producing nickel from sulphide ores and oxide ores and the advantages and disadvantages the Canadian nickel producers face.A brief critique of the existing and emerging nickel production technologies in Canada and the world is carried out and attempts are mad e to predict the changes which may take place in the foreseeable future."

Separation of dolomite from apatite, because of nonselective adsorption, cannot be achieved by conventional froth flotation technique. Results obtained in the present study also indicate, that this can be attributed to the depletion of the collector molecules due to complexation with the calcium and magnesium ions, dissolved from the two minerals. However, it has been established in this investigation that conditioning the material at pH 10, followed by reconditioning, without any additional collector, at pH 4, results in selective flotation of dolomite from the mixture. The recovery of apatite, in the proposed reconditioning process, is much higher than with the conventional conditioning under similar pH conditions. The mechanisms involved in the conventional conditioning, and the reconditioning process are presented.

Two examples, one in metals and the other in industrial minerals, explore prime product to by-product relationships. Relative revenues from all products illustrate the importance of by-products to economic feasibility. "Mechanics" takes a broad view of the types of marketing organizations that are applicable to individual circumstances in the marketplace. However, in simply trying to clearly define the term "by-product" some interesting relationships between products arise and the line of demarcation between "product" and "by-product" often becomes obscure. The search for that distinction represents the philosophy portion of the title. A couple of definitions of philosophy can even help to set the tone for what follows. According to Webster, philosophy is : 1 Pursuit of wisdom. 2. A search for a general understanding of values and reality.

There are no producing or developing mines in the study area. The only mineral production was stone from a basalt deposit near Indian View Point. Cinders and sand and gravel have been produced from deposits within 1/2 mi (0.8 km) of the boundary. Stone, sand and gravel, and cinder deposits inside the area are not considered resources because equal or better quality material is found closer to markets. The study area has no known oil and gas, coal, geothermal, or other energy related deposits. However, in 1982 application was filed on 25,000 acres (10,125 ha) of petroleum and on 15,000 acres; (6,0/5 ha) of geothermal leases.

The current state of the mass transit industry in America will be examined. How and why this important urban activity shifted entirely, or almost entirely, from the private sector to the public sector. Who pays for transit? For day to day operating costs? For capital investment? The prospects for transit's future will be the next major issue addressed. In a word, they are rather good. Over the past decade there have been major new transit investments made in Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Miami, as well as constant re-investment in such cities as New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. While the current administration has put a temporary halt on the initiation of any major new rail transit projects using Federal funds, there are several mechanisms localities have for using other resources for such projects. These will be explored.

"Induced polarization/resistivity and magnetometer surveys have been carried out over the Casmo molybdenite deposit in mountainous terrain of northern British Columbia. Molybdenite occurs in quartz-bearing fractures with or without pyrite along a zone of hydrothermal alteration and intense fracturing, believed to be a northerly dipping fault zone, within medium-grained equigranular and porphyritic quartz monzonite.The molybdenite-bearing zone is characterized by a significant resistivity low, a metal factor high and a subtle IP low flanked by highs outside the mineralized area. Magnetic trends, indicated by a magnetometer survey, generally parallel the zone and strike direction of the different intrusive phases, and have been helpful in delineating contacts and faults in the area.IntroductionThe Casmo molybdenite deposit is 6 km southwest of the asbestos mining town of Cassiar in northern British Columbia, at an elevation of 1,550 metres. Molybdenite was first discovered during the early 1950s and the first important exploration work was done in 1964. Between 1964 and 1971, about 25,000 feet of drilling was done by various operators, as a result of which 33.7 million tons of molybdenite ore was drill indicated at a grade of 0.123%. In 1979, Shell Canada Resources entered into an option agreement with the former operator, New Jersey Zinc Corporation. Shell completed 27,000 feet of diamond drilling between 1979 and 1980 and ha s reported 75 million tonnes of drill-indicated ore with an average grade of 0.13% MoS2• This paper is a case history of IP I resistivity and magnetometer surveys done over the Casmo deposit during 1979 and 1980."

The authors have developed a com¬puter-assisted critical path planning and scheduling model to help reduce time required to move longwall mining units. The model includes time constraints and limited resource constraints, such as manpower, machinery, supplies, work space, and transportation routes. Outstanding results were achieved on the first move to which the computer-model pas applied; e.g., downtime due to the move was cut by 50%. The model and the schedules developed using it provide an excellent blueprint for future moves and have led to significant savings in time and costs for Emery Mining Corporation, Huntington, Utah.

The element silicon, with its usual partner, oxygen, plays the same role relative to inorganic materials as carbon and hydrogen play with respect to living organisms. The crystallographic structure of silicon dioxide (SiO2) consists of one atom of silicon well-nigh inseparably bonded to four contiguous atoms of oxygen, a gas of but slightly more than half its atomic weight, forming a three-dimensional network of SiO4 tetrahedra (Dietz, 1968). This wispy arrangement is the fabric of the mineral quartz which is one of the harder, more abrasive, and chemically stable raw materials to be found in Mother Nature's cupboard. Most of us are vaguely familiar with the observation that nearly 60% of the lithosphere to an approximate depth of 10 miles is composed of these two elements, which proportion actually rises to about 75% if the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere are included (Parker, 1967). Elemental silicon is a brittle steel-gray metalloid with a density of 2.42 and does not occur in nature. In its limited commercial form, which is still brittle and metallic in appearance, its density drops to 2.33. It combines with oxygen to form the gaseous oxide SiO, or the solid dioxide Si02 (analogous to its congener carbon in CO and CO2); a tetrachloride SiCI4 (analogous to CC14); or, combining with oxygen and one or more metal ions, forms the largest rock-making family of all, the silicates. Further, next to the feldspars, quartz is the most abundant known mineral and, in some form or another, accounts for roughly 12% of surficial terrestrial rock. It is this so-called "free silica" to which your attention is chiefly directed in this chapter. In any such consideration of silica, its several crystalline phases with their attendant differing physical properties appear worthy of delineation. Alpha quartz is the only one of this interesting polymorphic family that is thermodynamically stable at normal pressures and temperatures up to about 573°C. The low phases of tridymite and cristobalite can exist in the so-called metastable state below 117° to 200ºC but seldom occur in nature in these two different crystal forms (Sosman, 1965). Opaline silica, now considered by most researchers to be a variety of cristobalite, occurs in abundance and is the only exception. The three remaining polymorphs, keatite, coesite, and stishovite, also are metastable under ambient conditions. Keatite, however, is not known to occur naturally and has only been synthesized in the laboratory. The other two have been identified in submicron sizes and in microscopic amounts, occurring naturally as a result of high order shock-wave pressures generating quite elevated temperatures --such as might accompany the impact of a large meteorite on a hard sandstone terrain (Chao et al., 1962). An intriguing characteristic of these silica minerals, and one which has very practical applications, is their extremely variable densities. The classic 2.65 specific gravity of alpha quartz drops to 2.20 in tridymite, cristobalite, and lechatelierite (natural silica glass), as well as in many man-made glasses of commerce which are merely noncrystalline or amorphous solids in the form of super-cooled liquids which can no longer change their shapes (Pauling, 1950). It rises again to 2.50 and 2.93 for keatite and coesite, respectively, and finally becomes a reported 4.35 for stishovite-nearly a 50% range in density for the known physical combinations that silica naturally assumes (Frondel, 1962; Konnert et al., 1973; Pecora, 1960). Pursuing its esthetic aspects, briefly, silica is well-represented among gem stones which, to qualify as such, must have the attributes of beauty, durability, and rarity (Jahns, 1983). Starting in 1980, a committee of the National Research Council studied the question of why some underground coal mines are safer than others and what could be done to improve the ones with poorer performance. The results indicated that safety is improved by management commitment to safety, by cooperation between labor and management on safety matters, and by quality training of employees and managers. Younger mines have higher accident frequencies, but are less likely to be killed or permanently disabled by a lost-time accident. Methods for improving safety performance are proposed.

Plant nutrients are obtained by plants from both the air and the soil. Carbon dioxide, a gaseous form of carbon and oxygen, supplies the carbon which usually makes up 50% or more of plant structure. Plants are capable of absorbing carbon dioxide directly from the air. Most of this nutrient comes from the air, although some carbon dioxide is absorbed by soil water and taken into the plant as liquid. Growing plants use more water than any other substance. Plant nutrients in the soil dissolve in soil water; soil water entering the plant carries nutrients into the plant structure. Water is then given off into the air as the plant breathes or transpires. Inorganic or mineral nutrients essential to plants are supplied through the soil. Inorganic or mineral composition of plants usually is less than 5% of their weight. In most crop-growing areas, much of this nutrition is inadequately supplied from the soil and must be provided by fertilizers. Proper fertilization of a soil to improve its mineral level and productivity is the role of the fertilizer industry. The 13 essential plant nutrients which often must be added to soils or plants and are generally considered fertilizer minerals are categorized as primary minerals (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium); secondary minerals (calcium, magnesium, and sulfur); and micronutrients, or trace minerals (boron, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, molybdenum, and chlorine). These classifications are based on quantity of nutrients utilized by plants and have no implication as to function or degree of necessity. One point of major significance to the fertilizer industry is that not all nutrient carriers supply that nutrient in a chemical form which will be available to the plant. Thus, a product which may be considered a fertilizer mineral may require substantial processing or may require substantial processing or treatment before it becomes useful as a nutrient carrier. Fertilizer Industry Scope Until about 1900 demands for higher crop yields were met simply by bringing new agricultural lands into cultivation. Since that time great progress has been made in increasing yields through fertilization and improved varieties and cultural practices. The importance of the fertilizer industry to the economy and welfare of the US is widely recognized. Fig. 1 illustrates the relationship of lime and fertilizers to crop yields. In terms of tons of fertilizer products, the growth of the industry has been phenomenal, particularly between 1950 and 1980. Table 1 shows the increase in fertilizer usage. "The casual visitor is not apt to think of the Adirondacks as a one-time hive of mining and manufacturing activity. However, where there are mountains there are usually minerals and northern New York State is no exception.The Adirondacks are a rocky shield, a great stone cap pulled down over what is now northern New York. The bedrock consists of layered metamorphic rocks which were once sandstones or limestones on the bottom of a shallow sea that covered the region 1000 million years ago. The highlands are composed for the most part of the igneous rock anorthosite. Ancient earth upheavals at temperatures of at least 750°C mixed molten masses of anorthosite and the minerals it contained with the older metamorphic rock, resulting in deposits of iron-titanium oxide s, red garnet and other valuable minerals. Of these, the most readily recognizable was iron.The first hint of the existence of iron ore in the Adirondack Lake Champlain region of upper New York State seems to have come from a Swedish naturalist, Peter Kalm (1716-1769), who travelled through French Canada and visited the military outpost of Fort St. Frederic in 1749. In July of that year, Kalm wrote:""Among the kinds of sand which are found on the shores of Lake Champlain; one is black and the other garnet-colored... and they sparkle when the sun shines. All the grains of this sand without exception are attracted to the magnet, the uppermost or black sand being about a quarter inch deep...""Concerned primarily with the fur trade, the officers and men who occupied this remote bastion of La Belle France were apparently unaware of the industrial and commercial possibilities beneath their feet. No deposit of iron was then known to exist any closer than the Three River s area in Lower Canada."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a system that permits the "soft" soldering of aluminum and aluminum alloys with standard tin-lead solders. The method employs application of a thin nickel-copper-alloy coating to the substrate, which enables the tin-lead solders to wet readily and spread over the areas to be joined. With conventional technology, aluminum and aluminum alloys are extremely difficult to solder because tenacious surface oxide films prevent wetting. With the Bureau-developed method, the aluminum substrate is mechanically or chemically cleaned to facilitate bonding to a minute layer of zinc that is subsequently applied with an electroless zincate solution. The nickel-copper-alloy (30 to 70 pct Ni) coating is then applied electrolytically over the zinc, using immersion cell or brush-coating techniques. Development of acetate electrolytes has permitted deposition of the proper alloy coatings. The coated areas can then be readily joined with conventional tin-lead solders and fluxes. The joints so formed are ductile, strong, and relatively corrosion resistant, and exhibit strengths equivalent to those formed on copper and brass when the same solders and fluxes are used. The method has also been employed to soft-solder magnesium alloys.

A Bureau of Mines investigation identified no mineral deposits in the Lost Creek RARE II area. Sand and gravel has been mined from alluvial flood plain deposits just outside the RARE II boundary. An oil and gas lease application which includes the eastern portion of the RARE II area is pending. Abundant basalt in the area can be crushed and used as aggregate; but it could not compete with similar deposits in more favorable locations, or with cheaper substitutes such as volcanic cinders or sand and gravel which are available outside the study area closer to major markets. No indication of coal or geothermal energy resources was found. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Lost Creek RARE II area encompasses 8,300 acres (3,400 ha) of Lassen National Forest in north-central California, about 20 mi (30 km) north of Lassen Peak. The closest city is Redding, California, 50 air mi (80 km) southwest. Peripheral access is provided by State Highway 89 passing near the western RARE II boundary (fig. 1). The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the western margin of Hat Creek Rim adjacent to the eastern boundary of the area.
