In south-eastern King Island, sediments and lavas of possible Upper Proterozoic to Lower Cambrian age have been intruded by Lower Carboniferous granitic rocks.Within the contact aureole of the Bold Head adamellite north of Grassy the sediments and lavas have been metamorphosed to hornblende hornfels facies grade. The thermal gradient within the contact aureole was small, as the hornfelses exhibit no mineral zoning over a distance of 700 ft from the adamellite.Skarns occur both within the adamellite near its contact with the country rocks, and within the country rocks as partial replacements of three dolomitic limestone horizons. The latter type, the exoskarns, commonly have an andradite-salite mineralogy and carry economic concentrations of scheelite. These resulted from the replacement of carbonate beds due to both diffusion and infiltration metasomatism. Silica, tungsten, minor sulphides, and water were introduced from the adamellite, while aluminium and iron diffused from the enclosing pelitic sediments. Calcium released during marble replacement countered the loss of iron and aluminium in the pelitic hornfelses transforming them to diopside-rich rocks.Endoskarns within the adamellite are the result of two way diffusion across the contact; calcium, aluminium, and iron diffused from sediment to adamellite as silica, potassium, sodium, and water diffused from adamellite to the sediments. From estimates of the lithostatic pressure and mole fraction of CO2, the mineral assemblages of the hornfelses imply that the temperature of metamorphism lay between 530° and 710°C. This temperature range is in good agreement with minimum temperatures, between 610° and 710°C, for the recrystallization of the marbles of the contact aureole, calculated from the determinations of the solid solution of the magnesite molecule in calcite.

During 1964 and 1965 a mineral exploration program was carried out over an area of approximately 250 square miles, located in the Anvil-Vangorda Creek area of east central Yukon, 125 miles northwest of Whitehorse. The Vangorda deposit, a massive lead-zinc sulphide body discovered in 1953, was centred in the area proposed for exploration, a northwest trending belt located between the southwestern flank of the Anvil Range and Pelly River. Exploration for base metals in the remote Anvil area had previously been restricted by poor metal markets in the late 1950's. Regional geologic information was also limited except for publication of a scale 1 inch to 4 mile map by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1961. To effectively explore this area, a combination of geophysical and geochemical methods were essential due to extensive overburden cover varying in depth from a few feet to over 300 feet. (Figure (i) Key Map) Dynasty Explorations initiated the first comprehensive regional exploration program in the Anvil area, utilizing saturation prospecting methods employing geologic, geochemical and geophysical methods. The program involved an approach demanding continual modification of technical and physical logistics. After a total of 12 months of field work involving an expenditure of approximately $450,00, massive sulphides were discovered which subsequently proved to be an economic orebody. Thirteen properties had been acquired and explored. Ten separate geophysical anomalies had been outlined by a combination of magnetic, electric and gravimetric survey techniques of which five were tested by rotary drilling and two by diamond core drilling. The discovery of the Faro deposit was a direct result of this program.

As man searches unexplored horizons for new and economic industry, he must be constantly and acutely aware of the presence or absence of that precious commodity without which Industry, indeed Man himself, could not survive --W ATE R. The water requirements of the world today are magnanimous, considering that in 1960 the estimated consumption in the united States was over 300 billion GPD (1) or more than 1,700 GPD per person (5). The magnitude of the problem can be visualized as one considers that three times this quantity of water will be required in the united States by the year 2 000, when the dependable supplies of water are estimated to be only two-thirds of that required(2). How, then, can we continue to wreak such havoc on that life-sustaining substance -W ATE R? It is necessary, indeed mandatory, that those engaged in the Engineering profession consider it their moral obligation, not only to conserve the quantity of water which their conceived projects may require, but also to treat the effluent in order that the eutro-phication of natural water courses not be abnormally accelerated. The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited consumes some 33-1/2 millions of gallons of fresh water daily at its nine town-sites, fourteen mines and eight plants throughout the Sudbury district of Ontario. The present daily reuse of water exceeds 100 millions of gallons in the same area. It is noteworthy to mention that the milling rate has increased from 46,000 to 70,000 tons per day during the past five years, with no increase in water consumption. In fact, there has been a reduction in fresh water requirements.

Microseismic noise rates and slope movements were measured in an unstable area along the north wall of the Tripp-Veteran pit, Kennecott Copper Corp., Ruth, Nev. Low-noise, wide-band microseismic geophones were located at various points in the wall, and the change in distance across open fractures, resulting from instability, was determined by repeated measurements between fixed points set on each side of the fractures. The microseismic noise rate increased and decreased with corresponding increases and decreases in the rate at which the fractures opened. The microseismic noise rates and changes in width of the fractures show excellent agreement, and the two types of measurements complement each other in monitoring the progress of pit wall failure.

The principal procedures for the statistical analysis of gold assay and other trace-element data depend on applying either the normal frequency distribution or the lognormal frequency distribution. The consequences of applying both methods are examined through reference to example data from United States and South African gold mines. It is concluded that for estimation of average grades, except for certain data with a very high coefficient of variation (ratio of standard deviation to mean), use of the lognormal distribution is ordinarily undesirable because bias may be introduced and little efficiency can be gained. However, if biased average grades can be tolerated, as in the examination of data from surveys in exploration geochemistry, use of the log-normal distribution may be desirable. Various statistical analyses are detailed, and the tables presented to implement the analyses are more complete than those previously published.

Introduction In October of 1961 Texas Gulf Sulphur Company contacted the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory, of the North Carolina State University, and requested assistance in the development of a phosphate ore body in Beaufort County. The main: objectives of the work at Asheville were defined as follows. The Laboratory should try to determine on the basis of drill core samples, submitted by Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, the highest grade of phosphate concentrate that could be obtained with high recoveries from North Carolina ore, the thickness of the ore body that could be treated economically in one section, and the quantity of concentrate that could be obtained per acre. The results should be compared with data obtained from the treatment of Florida ores. It was important to use mineral preparation methods during the initial laboratory work that could be verified later by continuous pilot plant operation and could be scaled-up for a commercial plant. The writer was in charge of the project at the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory and participated in the development of one of North Carolina's greatest mineral resources from the first drill core examination to the production of the first poundage and tonnage quantities of flotation concentrates. The Lee Creek phosphate mine and mill was put in operation in early 1966 and can produce three million tons of phosphate concentrate a year. Sulfuric- acid, and phosphoric acid plant, diamonium phosphate plant and triple super phosphate plants came on stream in 1967; at that time they were the world's largest. For 10 years, the author has been engaged in a program of geologic mapping of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska, for the U.S. Geological Survey. Initially, two 1:63,360-scale quadrangles were napped by traditional methods of traverses by foot and by tracked vehicle, supplemented by reconnaissance from a light aircraft owned and piloted by the author. Five summers were required to map those two quadrangles, which lie north of the tree lice in typical Arctic climate. In 1967, the project was reoriented toward the reconnaissance capping of four 1:250,000-scale quadrangles, with helicopter support to be used for cart of each of four summers amounting to about 45 hours time per support year. The light aircraft was use-,' to support the field operations. Over the year,, the aircraft was used in progressively more geologic tasks, culminating in 1970 with a successful field test of rudimentary devices made to collect soil, rock, and sediment samples while the aircraft remained airborne. Additionally, an attempt was made j- 1970 to prepare reconnaissance geologic maps entirely by the use of the light aircraft combined with foot traverses [fr??], the landed aircraft. Several such maps, prepared at the rate of about one 1:63,360-scale quadrangle per day, were checked from a helicopter by an impartial observer end were found to be sufficiently accurate for reconnaissance mapping when reduced to 1:250.000 scale.

My closest personal connection with the problems of rehabilitation comes from two years spent on a project at Weipa. At the beginning I am fairly certain that the engineers did not understand the mental processes of the ecologist they were dealing with. I am absolutely certain that the ecologist did not understand the minds of the engineers. This form of the two cultures problem is the root of some of the matters that lie behind this lecture. It is possible to establish a stabilising cover of vegetation on virtually any land surface, short of a cliff. While the biologist knows this he also knows that the physical and chemical nature of a given acre of land combines with climate to define quite sharply just what plants can be grown there. In the case of land after mining the range of plants may be quite limited. The engineer, and his masters in the accounting section, seem (in my experience) to expect that rehabilitation can be carried on with equal speed and facility in any location. This belief commonly leads to a situation where rehabilitation is not considered until mining is well under way. True, the mine must be proved as an assured profit- earner before money can be justified for the non-productive (to the miner) expense of rehabilitation. But when the miner finally starts rehabilitation he does not always get a convincing and speedy result. Furthermore, the failure may not be easy to overcome. This is even more likely to be the sequence of events if the miner wants, or is obliged, to specify the exact type of vegetation to be produced, e. g. commercial forest, pasture,' or the original native vegetation.

This publication comprises tables listing friction loss for a flexible, spiral-reinforced circular ventilation tubing system. The tables were constructed with the following parameters: a friction factor of 62 X 10-10, 10-foot sections of tubing ranging in total length from 100 to 550 feet, air quantities ranging from 1,000 to 15,000 cfm, and one to four 90° bends in the tubing. The aim of this publication is to improve ventilation tubing analysis and to provide a method of proper fan selection.

In the analysis of comminution processes, it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of such sub-processes as: (i) The transportation of the particles to the zone where they are stressed, (ii) The stressing of the particles to a level high enough for breakage, (iii) The removal of the fragments that are smaller than the limit size from the grinding zone, and (iv) The prevention of agglomeration of the fine fragments. The breakage phenomena of particles is the most difficult sub-process to understand. It can be understood only by applying the principles of fracture physics to obtain information about the stress-strain field in particles which are loaded either by compression or by impact, and by using this theoretical knowledge to interpret experimental results obtained from single particle crushing studies. It is not only of academic interest to know how a particle breaks, but also it is important for practical applications because it provides a basis for evaluating both the direction and limitation for any potential comminution improvement.

Griffith’s theory of brittle fracture, as modified by McClintock and Walsh to fit rock behavior in cases of failure by compression, has been successfully applied in various fields of rock mechanics. Extension of the Griffith's criterion to rock blasting problems may also be more representative of rock behavior than the simple consideration of a criterion of failure based on the dynamic tensile strength of the material. If consideration is given to pre-existing cracks within rock structure, occurring not only because of the discontinuous properties of rocks, but also as a result of drilling operations that normally precede blasting, those cracks can be propagated under the action of the dynamic stresses (radial and tangential) induced by the passage of the wave emitted by the explosion. Conditions for initiation and propagation of pre-existing cracks are deduced in terms of rock properties and explosives performance. Influence of the different variables governing the phenomenon is discussed after considering an actual example. Results seem to be well correlated with experimental evidence of radial cracking observed in blasting with high explosives acting within hard rock.

"Special salt protection rings containing a water-swell• able, polymeric sealant are in successful operation in Canadian potash shafts. Installed above the Prairie Evaporite salt formation at a depth of 3,000 feet, the sealant is preventing formation water migration into the salt and pressure build-up on the concrete lining of both production and service shafts. The salt protection rings are not under the hydrostatic pressure of the formation water.The chemical sealant in use has the unique property of imbibing water and swelling. •Therefore, any water at• tempting to flow by the seal ring actually produces a tighter seal.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the sealant and its properties and uses. Installation of the material and its operation in two Canadian mine shafts is described."

The Star-Morning mine is a. 1000-ton-per-day lead-zinc producer located in the easterly part of the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of North Idaho. The property includes both the Star and Morning mines which are located on the westerly and easterly portions of the same complex of veins. The mine is 70% owned by the Bunker Hill Company (Gulf Resources, Inc.) of Kellogg, Idaho, 30% owned by Hecla Mining Company, and operated by Hecla Mining Company with head-quarters in Wallace, Idaho. One of the characteristics of mines in the Coeur d'Alene District is that many of the ore bodies extend to very great depths. The Star is no exception, but rather a leading example. The complex of near vertical veins and ore shoots extend some 7000 feet below the surface at present, with a maximum strike length of about 4000 feet. Ore has been mined on 20 separate veins and ore structures. More than 50 miles of headings have been driven and nearly 23 million tons of ore mined since the Morning mine started in.189S. The problems of mining at such depths are formidable temperature on the bottom level is 1100 F and high humidity problem. Pressure from the sheer weight of rock is as high foot. This paper will deal with providing a new access to the deeper levels of the mine and the installation of a hoist and related items to service these levels. By the time development had reached the 7100 level (Figure 1), it became apparent that a different 'hoisting system was going to be necessary if we were going to continue to mine at a profit. The main shaft extended to the 4000 level at which point a ?:3100"'foot winze shaft provided access to the 7100 level. The two hoists were limited to handling 3-ton payloads at 1200 to 1500 feet per minute. Some ores are still produced from above the 4000 level but as these ore reserves become depleted the hoisting of the desired tonnage (1000+/day-) from the lower levels of the mine would exceed the capacity of the existing hoisting system. A decision was made to sink a new vertical shaft at a point well in the south wall of the ore bodies where strong rocks and a minimum of faulting was expected and to purchase and install a new hoist capable of hoisting over 7000 feet. This new' shaft, designated as the No. 4 Shaft, was planned to reach 2000 feet below the 7100 level which was the deepest level at that time. The hoist would be in-stalled on the ,main 2000 Adit level which is used as an access and haulage level to the concentrator and surface plant in Burke.

The occurrence of rock bursts in some deep mines throughout the world constitutes a severe operational hazard. In addition to endangering the safety of the miners, the rock-burst problem is a major factor in mining economically in deep mines because of the loss of production and expense owing to cleanup and repairs following a burst. Developing means of controlling or eliminating rock bursts has been the subject of intensive research for over 50 years. While much has been learned about the effects of rock bursts, little is known about their basic causes; hence, control measures have been at best only partially effective--attested to by the number and severity of bursts that continue to occur throughout the world each year. In the Coeur d'Alene mining district of north Idaho, the rock-burst problem continues as the silver and lead veins persist at depth. These veins are presently being mined at greater than 7,000 feet below the surface and will be mined to some 10,000 feet in the future. The majority of rock bursts in this district occur in pillars. While pillar bursting has been essentially eliminated in some deep-mining districts by longwall techniques, modification or application of this technique to the thin, irregular, and near vertically dipping veins of the Coeur d'Alene district has not been found to be practical. The creation of pillars is a consequence of the horizontal cut and fill mining method used. Figure 1 shows a vertical longitudinal projection of the silver vein at the Galena mine, illustrating the mining method. Stoping progresses between raises and is carried upward between levels. A horizontal pillar is created as a stope approaches a mined-out level. Recent broad-band micro seismic monitoring of rock-burst-prone stopes by the Bureau of Mines has shown that potential burst zones could be delineated weeks in advance of a burst and that a definite sequence of events took place prior to the occurrence of a pillar burst (1). Hence, time was available for control measures to be effected when a stope pillar reached a critical burst geometry.

"INTRODUCTION Over the past decade, a number of publications have described the advances in High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation. A number of significant, but small capacity installations were made and are successfully operating. These were followed some three years ago by larger installations treating ilmenite gravity concentrates; at least one machine treating 25 tons per hour of new feed was installed and is successfully operating.However, this still did not result in general acceptance that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation could be applied on a large scale. Neither did it dispel the feeling that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation was ""expensive"" and hence, confined to small scale – high value applications suchas the cleaning of tin concentrates. In addition, there is the usual reluctance of being the ""guinea pig"" which has resulted in waiting to see ""someone else"" make the first large installation decision. Such a decision and installation has now been made.Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to show that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation has been commercially accepted on a large scale and to show its general application to the base metal mineral industry.Examples are confined to a few specifics due to the large volume of preliminary test data that is available. The art has now reached the stage where much of the preliminary work should be taken through to serious evaluation."

Summarising a conference is never an easy task, but I will try to keep my comments brief and to the point. There are a number of lessons which we have learned from our deliberations together during these past three days, and I will try to give you my impressions of these lessons and of their practical implications in open pit mining. The first thing that has become increasingly obvious during these discussions is that it is no longer acceptable to offer an 'Act of God' as an excuse for a major slope or tailings dam failure. Disasters such as that at Aberfan in the United Kingdom have focussed the world's attention on the activities of the mining industry and the report of the commission set up to investigate the Aberfan disaster clearly showed that adequate knowledge was available and that failure to apply this knowledge did not qualify as an 'Act of God'. The courts and the world's press are certain to impose increasingly harsher penalties and criticism on those held responsible for major failures, particularly of tailings dams, in the future. One of the major problems in applying available knowledge to slope problems is that attempts to apply this knowledge are frequently left too late. To provide an engineering solution in the case of a slope in an advanced state of failure is an almost impossible task, and it is essential that those responsible for the stability of a slope must learn to recognise signs of distress at an early enough stage for effective remedial measures to be taken. As our ability to solve slope problems improves, the time at which slope stability problems are considered in a mining project must move forward to a stage at which these problems can be anticipated and dealt with before they arise. Conferences such as this are important in that they enable us to exchange ideas and advance our knowledge to a level at which such predictive engineering will be possible. It has been encouraging to hear of mining projects such as the Bougainville Copper operation where slope stability studies were carried out as part of the overall evaluation programme and it is hoped that this will become a more common procedure in the future. Providing a safe slope in an opencast mine obviously costs money, either in terms of the reduced ore to waste ratio given by flat slopes or because of the cost of stabilization techniques such as drainage or the use of rock anchors. An optimum slope design will provide maximum safety at minimum cost but achieving this optimum is not an easy task. Any one of us could design a slope which would be stable to the end of time, but it is probable that that slope would be so flat as to be totally uneconomic in most open pit mining situations. On the other hand, if the overall economics of a mining project are so critical as to require slope angles which the engineer responsible for these slopes considers to be unsafe, it is his duty to make us could design a slope which would be stable to the end of time, but it is probable that that slope would be so flat as to be totally uneconomic in most open pit mining situations. A commercially available Halon 1301 extinguisher has been evaluated as part of an explosion-suppression system for use in coal mines. Studies were made both of the dispersion pattern of the Halon 1301 at an initial pressure of 280 psig, and of the efficacy of this suppressant against 9.5 percent methane-air flames. These flames were quenched successfully only when the suppressant was applied before the fireball diameter exceeded 18 inches.
