The present list of problems relating to the physical chemistry of steelmaking has been prepared by the Committee on the Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, from answers to a questionnaire submitted to a number of metallurgists engaged in both industrial and educational work throughout the United States. The purpose of the project is to make available to research laboratories a list of problems, all reduced to their simplest terms, the solution of which would aid in creating a better understanding of the steelmaking process. It is not intended to restrict the problems to practical steelmaking. The list also includes the study of the properties, and their correlation, as well as the physical and chemical reactions, of all substances that occur or that may be in any way associated with steelmaking operations, such as metallic substances, refractories, nonmetallic inclusions, and the constituents of slags. Many of the problems can be carried out in university or other research laboratories. Others may be most successfully attacked by cooperation of the research men with the operating personnel. It is the Committee's earnest wish that this cooperation be fostered. It is requested that investigators who are working on any of the problems listed and who anticipate future publication of their results, notify the Secretary of the Committee that such investigation is in progress. Suggested additions to the present list are also requested. The Committee is undertaking to act as a clearing house for information regarding the topics in this field that are being actually studied. Interested persons are invited to correspond with the Secretary. I. Data involved in the state of equilibrium for the various systems (laboratory work, almost entirely). A. Determination of the specific heats of open-hearth slags, including liquid silicates, if possible.

Direct observations were made on the recrystalli-zntion of a cold-rolled (110) [001] crystal of 3 pct Si-Fe by annealing thin sections of the specimen inside the electron microscope during examination. Subgrain formation, presumably by polygonization, occurs rapidly, followed by a slow increase in the subgrain size before recrystallization can be detected. No migration of the subgrain boundaries was observed, and the formation of recrystallization nuclei by coalescence of subgrains is suggested. Re-c~ystallization characteristics of various texture components were individually examined. AS reported in a previous paper: orientations of the various deformation texture components in a 70 pct cold-rolled (110) [0011 crystal of 3 pct Si-Fe were completely confirmed by transmission electron diffraction patterns taken at various areas of the specimen. These orientations can be summarized as follows: Over most areas of the deformed crystal (111) planes are parallel to the surface. These areas correspond to either $- the two main defor: mation textures, the (111) [112] or the (111) [112].2-5 Within a few areas, (100) planes parallel to the surface are frequently found. These areas represent the minor deformation texture component, the (100) [Oll] type, which is derived from rotated Neumann bands.2'4'5 Only in very rare instances are (110) planes found parallel to the surface. This orientation corresponds to the very weak texture component of the (110) [001] type. In a pole figure, this (110) [0011 orientation is located within the orientation spread between the two main (111) [1121 type textures. Usually the electron diffraction patterns taken at various areas of the specimen are very simple ones, i.e., for any one area the pattern consists only of sharply defined spots of a single orientation. In some areas, however, more or less continuous rings of weaker intensities are superimposed on a simple pattern, indicating the presence of a wide range of additional orientations. In order to understand in detail the recrystallization of this cold-worked crystal, the recrywtallization characteristics of each of the various deformation texture components must be examined. This can best be done by using a high-temperature stage and transmission electron microscopy techniques, whereby small areas corresponding to the various texture components can be selected individually for examination. The present paper presents results obtained by this method. MATERIAL AND METHOD Specimens were prepared from a previously studied1 single crystal of a commercial grade 3 pct Si-Fe alloy with an initial orientation (110) [00l], cold-rolled 70 pct from 0.014 in. to 0.004 in. in thickness. Thin foils were prepared by electrolytic polishing as described in the earlier paper.' Specimens of this thin foil were then mounted in a high temperature stage similar to the one designed by Whelan.6 A direct current was used as the heating source. The temperature of the heating grid was calibrated by means of a Pt vs Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple in a vacuum chamber (0.01 to 0.02µHg). Maximum variation within the temperature range of 250o to 000°C was about ± 25°C. After the desired areas were selected for examination, the specimen was heated to a low temperature for some time while the selected area was constantly watched. When no further change in structure and orientation could be observed, a higher temperature was applied. MUCH has been said in print, and much more that was unprintable, about burdensome controls, taxation, and multiplying restrictive, regulatory, or taxing activities of the Federal Government, but not so much has been said about ways and means whereby the Government can and does render economic assistance. Economics has been defined as the study of men earning a living, and economic assistance to industry as well as to individuals properly should take the form of helping enterprisers to help themselves rather than charity. Proposals to have the Government play Santa Claus must be examined carefully if -only to avoid undue favoritism to politically important persons and downright venality by potentially crooked public officials. Thomas Jefferson is credited with the remark that the best government is the one which governs least. Paternalism is abhorrent to most Americans.

THE oxidized ores of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co., in the Tintic mining district, have never yielded to metallurgical treatment by any standard method except smelting. These ores occur in comparatively small, irregular, siliceous replacements in limestone, and carry silver, lead, and gold as the principal valuable metals. But smelting methods. are unsatisfactory, as the lead smelters heavily penalize the large amount of silica in the ore, and the copper smelters do not pay for the lead in the ore; therefore, an alternative treatment method was sought. In 1916, a metallurgical research department was organized under; the direction of the writer. Many standard metallurgical methods were investigated but, on oxidized ore, none yielded extraction great enough to make its use feasible. During some chloridizing-roasting experiments in 1916, made in an assay muffle, the writer noted that large proportions of the silver, lead, and gold were volatilized from certain oxidized ores. The possibility of volatilizing the metals and collecting them in the form of a concentrated fume was then studied. But, as it was shown that satisfactory chloride-volatilization would be limited to a furnace feed with a high fusing temperature of the non-volatilizable constituents, and as the results obtained in a rotary kiln with the admixture of common salt with the ground ore were inferior to muffle tests, further volatilization experiments were discontinued until 1920. During this interval, an experimental sulfidizing and flotation plant was operated. After the cessation of attempts to float the oxidized minerals, chloride-volatilization experiments were resumed. The highly infusible flotation. tailing from the operation of the flotation mill was used for furnace feed. The first tests made on flotation tailing mixed with 10 per cent. common salt showed -nearly complete lead and gold volatilization but considerably less volatilization of silver than in muffle tests. In attempts to increase the silver extraction, the percentage salt in the furnace feed was varied, and it soon became apparent that the use of smaller percentages of salt raised the fusion temperature of the furnace charge and thus,

The wzodel of Blandin and Diplunt;, generalized to include a phase factor, is applied to the carbon-carbon interaction in iron. Darken&apos;s "energetic" model is generalized to include not only first neighbor interactions but further neighbor interactions as well. On the bases of these generalized models relations are derived for the activity of carbon in both austenite and ferrite in terms of the carbon-carbon Pair interaction energies. A single function then yields the pair interaction energies consistent with the experimental activities of carbon in both ferrite and austenite. Thus, a simple explanation is given for the observation that the nearest-neighbor interaction between carbon is repulsive in austenite and attractive in ferrite. Certain consequences of this approach are explored. OnE object of the present paper is to attempt to take into account the consequences of electrostatic contributions to the carbon-carbon pair interaction energy for carbon as a solute in iron. Friedel&apos; has shown that oscillations in electrostatic potential are to be expected about a solute atom in a metallic solution. Blandin and 6lant6&apos; have shown that such oscillations yield an interaction energy between pairs of solute atoms that obeys the relation: W{ = A cos(2ftFri + 4>)/(kFri)3 [l] where kF = Fermi wave vector, ri = distance between solute atoms comprising the pair7 <p = phase factor dependent only on electronic nature of solute and solvent, A = coefficient dependent only on electronic nature of solute and solvent. Machlin3 found that Eq. [I] accurately described the pair interaction energy derived from short-range order measurements based on field ion microscope observations of dilute alloys of platinum. He also found that the value of the phase factor $ derived from residual resistivity measurements agreed well with that obtained from the analysis of the short-range order data. Harrison and paskin4 were able to predict the long-range ordering energy of 0 brass using Relation [I] and residual resistivity values to predict the value of the phase factor $. Machlin5 has repeated their analysis and applied it to the prediction of the long-range ordering energy in AgZn and AgCd with excellent agreement between prediction and experiment. Both A and $ are independent of the crystal structure. The Fermi wave vector depends uniquely upon the conduction electron concentration per unit volume in the spherical approximation of the Fermi surface. Thus, Eq. [I] is expected to apply to both fer- rite and austenite with only one set of values of A and $. Mossbauer studies6 yield the result that iron has one 4s electron. We shall make an assumption found to hold previously for platinum3&apos;7 and nikel, which is that only the s electrons are involved in shielding the perturbing potential of carbon. With this assumption, kF = 1.35 A-l. Although A and $ may be obtained from certain mdels&apos;&apos;&apos; we shall take A and $ to be empirical constants in the spirit of Kohn and osko.&apos; Thus, Eq. [I] involves two adjustible parameters. Consequently, two independent relations in A and $I are required in order to evaluate them for carbon as a solute in iron. We may use a recent analysis of Aaronson, Domain, and poundg who showed that Darken&apos;s energetic model,1° as well as others, can be used to describe the activity-temperature data for carbon in iron in both the aus-tenitic and ferritic phases. Darken&apos;s model takes into account only first neighbor pair interactions. For our needs, all neighbor pairs need to be taken into account. It is convenient to generalize Darken&apos;s model. The result for the partition function for austenite is: over the temperature range 800" to 1200°C and where the uncertainty corresponds to one standard deviation. Eq. [4] effectively yields only one relation. Another relation is required to obtain unique values for A and $. One property of Eq. [4] is that it is independent of crystal structure. Hence, data for a iron can be used to obtain another relation. To arrive at this relation we must generalize Eqs. [2] and [3] so that they may be applied to the bcc a iron. The result is that:

Materials may be dredged, processed, stored and loaded for shipment at a single site in water depths ranging from 250 to 1200 ft. Solution mining may also be accomplished in deep sea situations. And, open air subsea mines with direct surface access may be developed and worked under the ocean floor. These concepts for deep sea mining are the results of extensive testing of individual components of the proposed systems by Dravo Ocean Structures, Inc., a subsidiary of Dravo Corp. A basic structure in these systems is the articulated platform. The platform consists of a gravity- type base and a buoyant cylindrical column which is constructed at an onshore location, towed to the offshore site and installed in a matter of days without use of heavy equipment. The base is also buoyant for towing purposes. This allows for gradual flooding to the point of negative buoyancy for positioning and anchoring to the ocean floor.

THE farmer pays the phosphate miner! Phosphorus is used in fireworks; goes to battle in military smoke screens, incendiary shells, and tracer bullets; and, in vermin destroying pastes, does its part in the war against insects. A lemon phosphate can be had for a nickel at most soda fountains, and tens of thousands of tons of phosphate rock are mined annually for use in the food industries, chiefly for making monocaleium phosphate baking powder. Sodium phosphate cleaning, washing, and scouring compounds consume substantial quantities: the iron and steel industries buy a few thousand tons yearly to make ferrophosphorus and to balance foundry-iron furnace charges; and even nonferrous metallurgists use a little for phosphor bronze and other alloys. Phosphoric acid, its salts, and diverse other derivatives of this versatile element have countless applications, and industrial outlets are increasing rapidly, especially in the United States. Nevertheless, in this country nearly 90 per cent and in the whole world fully 95 per cent of the phosphate rock consumed is absorbed ultimately in agriculture.

The vapor pressure of indium has been measured by the torque-effusion technique, as a function of temperature between 1102o and 1422oK. For liquid indium, the vapor pressure (in atmospheres) can be represented by the equation -R In P = 5.782 x104/T - 25.29from 1000o to 1422oK. Extrapolation yields a calculated normal boiling point of 2329°K and a heat of vaporization at 298 oK of 58.09 kcal per mole by the third-law method and of 58.39 kcal per mole by the second-law method. Calculations indicate that the free-energy functions of Hultgren are to be preferred to those of Guruich. BECAUSE of the potential uses of liquid metals, it is important that convenient experimental methods be developed which will lead to a sufficient body of thermodynamic data so that reasonable estimates of properties of liquid metals can be made. Indium is particularly well-suited to investigation, since it remains liquid over a long temperature interval, it alloys readily, suitable containers for it are easily procured, and relatively few investigations of its thermodynamic properties in the region above 1000°K have been made. PREVIOUS RESEARCH The first determination of the vapor pressure of indium was made by Anderson,&apos; using the Knudsen method and silica-lines stainless-steel cells. Kohlmeyer and spandau2 determined the normal boiling point, and a mass-spectroscopic investigation has been made by Lyubimov and Lyubitov.3 (Unfortunately, only an equation representing the data of the latter investigators has been available to us.) Hultgren et al.4 and Gurvich5 have published discordant tables of the free-energy functions for indium. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The torsion-effusion principle has been described amply in the literature.8,7 With this method, one observes the angular deflection induced by effusion of vapor from a multihole effusion cell which is suspended from a filament producing a small rotational restoring force. The pressure within the effusion cell can be computed from the relation ziaifiai where k is the torsion constant of the filament, 6 is the observed angular deflection, and ai, fi, and qi are the area, force factor, and moment arm of the ith effusion orifice. The force factor f is analogous to the Clausing factor,&apos; and corrects for the reduction in effusive force attributable to the finite geometry of the effusion orifice. Schultz and Searcy&apos; have tabulated the force factors for various tube geometries. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The physical arrangement employed in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The furnace elements are six Globar heat rods with 15-in. hot zones. Temperature is maintained to * 1°K by a Beck mechanism driving two 26-amp Powerstats in parallel. A Pt (Pt, Rh 10 pct) thermocouple serves as the sensing element. Four inner tubes act as vibration isolators; the air pressure required for maximum isolation was determined empirically, and is maintained by a solenoid valve. The tungsten fiber, 9 by 0.002 in., is joined to an 0.008-in. tungsten wire or graphite rod via a machined lightweight chuck.

An intermediate compound that has been identified as Niab is observed to form as a decomposition product from supersaturaled Ni-Nb solid solutions during aging at temperatures between approximately 300" and 500°C. On the basis of data from electron microscopy and selected-area diffraction, the structure of this compound has been determined as fct with a = b - 3a0 and c = a, wlzere a,, is the lattice parameter of the parent solid solution. The compound consists of close-packed layers with triangular ordering, where the niobiutrl atoms are separated by two nickel atoms ([long- close?-packed directions. A nine layer stacking sequence is required to describe the proposed structure. STUDIES of the Ni-Nb binary system have been limited primarily to phase diagram determinations,&apos;-4 investigations of high-temperature equilibrium phases,5"1 and the determination of the influence of deformation on the structure of the equilibrium compound.8 The nickel-rich portion of the binary system is reported to be of the simple eutectic type in which the maximum solubility of 12.7 at. pct Nb occurs at 1282"c.&apos; The two-phase field below the eutectic temperature is bounded by the a fcc solid solution and an orthorhombic Ni3Nb compound. No metastable phases have been reported in previous investigations. In transformation studies of certain nickel-base commercial alloys that contain niobium, two ordered metastable compounds containing niobium have been shown to precipitate from the solid solution, both of which have been identified as y&apos; and have the composition NisNb or Ni,Nb. One compound has been reported to have the bct DOz2 type Al3Ti structure" and the other the cubic LI2 type Cu3Au structure.9,11 In the present work on Ni-Nb binary alloys a metastable y&apos; compound has not been detected after conventional quenching and aging treatments. An anomalous behavior was noted in electrical resistivity measurements. in alloys containing between 7 to 12 at. pct Nb when aging treatments were performed below 500°C after fast quenching from 1250°C. Transmission electron microscopy has shown that this behavior is caused by the formation of a low-temperature precipitate of unreported structure type and composition. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Several Ni-Nb alloys, containing up to 11.5 at. pct Nb. were prepared by either levitation melting and casting in copper molds or by induction melting in alumina crucibles; both techniques employed purified helium gas as a protective atmosphere. The purity of the nickel and niobium used to make the alloys was 99.98 wt pct Ni and 99.9 wt pct Nb. The composition and homogeneity of the alloys were checked by weight measurements and by electron microprobe analysis. The induction-melted alloys were homogenized for 100 hr at 1100°C. The resistivity specimens were prepared from rods swaged to 2.5 mm and the electron microscopy specimens were cut from sheet that was rolled to 0.4 mm and thinned using a modified Bollmann technique." The elevated-temperature solution treatments were carried out in a purified helium atmosphere followed by direct quenching into a 10 pct NaCl solution at 23°C. Additional protection against oxidation of the samples during solution treatment was accomplished by using tantalum foil as a "getter" in the furnace. The specimens were aged at various temperatures in salt baths controlled to +2oC. A Leeds and Northrup K5 potentiometer was used to make electrical resistivity measurements on specimens immersed in liquid nitrogen. Electron microscopy and diffraction studies were carried out with JEM-7 and Philips EM-200 microscopes operating at 100 kv. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Ni-Nb alloys containing between 7 and 11.5 at. pct Nb that have been solution-treated in the range 1220" to 1280°C and quenched to 23°C undergo a precipitation reaction when aged in the temperature range 300" to 500°C. Precipitation was detected by selected-area electron diffraction after aging a specimen for as little as 30 sec at 350°C) whereas the reaction was well-advanced after aging for 150 hr at 475°C. Electrical resistivity measurements were used to monitor the progress of the precipitation reaction. In the present experiments the nucleation process for precipitation required a high solution temperature and a rapid quench into brine. The presence of aluminum, iron? and carbon in amounts totaling less than 1 wt pct was found by electron diffraction to completely suppress the formation of the low-temperature precipitate that has been detected in the binary alloy. Electron diffraction techniques were used to determine the structure of the precipitates that formed during the decomposition of the Ni-Nb supersaturated solid solutions. Figs. l(a) through l(d) show electron diffraction patterns oriented to the [loo], [110], [lll], and [I031 zone axes of the matrix. Areas of reciprocal space between these sections were investigated by slowly varying the orientations of the crystal under study; this procedure revealed no reflections other than those depicted in Fig. 1. The presence of super-lattice reflections at points coincident with the matrix reflections was confirmed by the examination of an almost completely transformed structure. SINCE 1925, when the preferred orientations in compressed aluminum were first determined1, 2 the orientations have been described as a fiber texture in which a face diagonal, [110], of the face-centered cubic lattice is parallel to the compression axis. Subsequent experiments have seemed to confirm this texture,3-5 and a number of theories (recently summarized in references 6 and 7) have been proposed to explain it and to relate it to the behavior of single crystals during compression. 3,8-11 The experiments reported in this paper prove that the orientations are not adequately described as quoted above-i.e., as a [110] fiber texture-although this is a first approximation to the actual texture. They also show that the texture cannot be thought of as a stable orienta-tion that is reached and maintained after a sufficient amount of deforma-tion. The actual texture, when studied in detail at successive stages of compression, indicates that a hitherto unsuspected range of orientations is present, both in the polycrystalline metal as a whole and in various individual grains in its interior, and that a state of dynamic equilibrium exists within this range. The reasons for the failure of previous theories to predict the actual texture become obvious when the heterogeneous nature of the flow is considered. In addition to the deformation texture, the manner of its develop-ment, and its theory, this paper presents data on the following related subjects: the identity of strain markings in aluminum; the orientation changes in aluminum single crystals during compression and a com-parison of these with the conditions in individual grains of a polycrystal-line specimen; the origin of asterism in deformed single crystals, which heretofore has been regarded as a distortion localized at the surfaces of slip planes; and the relation of plastic strain in individual grains in an aggregate to the strain of the whole.

AS good health is the most important asset in life, the development of healthful conditions should be the one common meeting ground of agreement between management and labor. Health should not be a subject to be pulled apart, shoved around, or bargained about. Differences of opinion may exist in the procedure and techniques employed in approaching the goal of maintaining the health of workmen, and in the method of increasing the ultimate profit of the employer by improved working and living conditions. Such matters are doubtless appropriate subjects for discussions between the interested parties, but techniques are only tools. If an employer fails to remedy a hazard or a menace which contributes to poor working condlions, this constitutes a legitimate grievance. It should not be necessary, however, nor is it desirable that fundamentals of health maintenance become matters of collective bargaining, any more than should the principles of management and engineering. I have been especially concerned during the last few months with the propaganda in collective bargaining negotiations throughout the country for including in union contracts a given number of days of sick leave with pay. A number of investigators have noted the importance of various precipitation reactions on the properties of commercial-purity beryllium.1-5 Carrabine, for example, has demonstrated the interaction of iron and aluminum on the mechanical properties of hot-pressed polycrystalline beryllium.6 He considered the determining factor on elevated-temperature properties to be a reversible AlFeBe, precipitation reaction which could be directly related to the Fe/Al impurity ratio of the beryllium. Any aluminum in excess of the stoichio-metric amount required to form A1FeBe4 was presumed to remain primarily in the grain boundaries. We have observed, by transmission electron microscopy, such a grain boundary effect after various heat treatments of beryllium sheet. The starting material in this investigation was bare-rolled beryllium ingot sheet (0.001 to 0.005 in. thick), in contrast to the hot-pressed powder utilized by Carra-bine. It should be noted from the ingot sheet analysis shown in Table I that the Fe/Al weight ratio was near unity which would provide some free aluminum although the total aluminum and iron content was still small. Fig. l(a) shows some aluminum or aluminum-rich precipitates in the grain boundaries of a beryllium foil which had been quenched from 1200°C into brine at -TPC. Similar grain boundary precipitates were found, particularly at grain boundary intersections, in other samples quenched from 1100° and 1000°C. The length of annealing time at these elevated temperatures did not appear to substantially alter the amount of grain boundary precipitates, thus attesting to their relative insolubility. DISPERSION strengthening has been studied in a number of metal-metal oxide systems. To date those pure metals available as fine particles (less than about 5 p) have received most of the attention whereas solid solution alloys, generally unavailable as fine powders, have not been examined in detail. The present work was undertaken as a preliminary study to evaluate combined effects of solid solution and dispersion strengthening. The technique used was that of dry mixing of elemental powders with the oxide, followed by a diffusion treatment to obtain the solid solution. The average particle size of the powders used was: Ni, 3.2 p (1nco B); Mo, 1.3 p (Fansteel Metallurgical Corp.); and y alumina, 0.027 \i (G. L. Cabot, Inc.). The particle size of the metal powders was determined by Fisher subsieve measurements while the size of the alumina was calculated from a surface area determination. Prior diffusion studies on small compacts pressed from mixtures of nickel and molybdenum powders with and without 7.5 vol pct A1203 indicated that diffusion was complete after sintering for 100 hr at 1800" , or 50 hr at 2250", or 20 hr at 2550° F. The progress of diffusion was followed by microstructural examination and micro-hardness measurements. Two observations made during the diffusion experiments were: 1) That diffusion proceeded faster in the presence of alumina, confirming similar findings by Seith and Loepman on "SAP&apos;&apos;;4 2) That diffusion at temperatures above 1800°F resulted in coarsening of the alumina in agreement with results of other authors reporting on the growth of alumina in nickel above 1800"F. Similar experiments in the Ni-Cr system using 6 and 20 p Cr powders of 0.7 and 0.025 pct 0, respectively, did not result in significant solid solution formation even after long time exposures at 2550° F. It must be concluded that chromium oxide films around individual particles interfere with normal diffusion. A nickel alloy containing 5 wt pct Mo and 7.5 vol pct alumina was fabricated by dry mixing of powders, isostatically compacting at 30,000 psi, diffusing for 120 hr in dry hydrogen at 1800" F, and extruding at 1950"~ with a 30 to 1 reduction of area ratio. The resulting structure, presented in Fig. 1

The following analysis was an outgrowth of a midterm examination given by one of the authors (M.J.M) in a course entitled Metallurgy 541 "Applications of Dislocation Theory&apos;&apos; at Iowa State University. Fig, l(a) shows the three-layer sequence of atoms lying in the (111) plane which characterizes the fully ordered AB3 fcc crystal, i.e., LI2 type. If any two-layer sequence of close-packed planes is constructed from Fig. 16)&apos; the structure would be hcp of the DO,, type. Consider for convenience that the circled atoms lie in the plane of the drawing while those shown square and triangular lie immediately above and below the plane of the drawing, respectively. It has already been shown&apos; that if a Shockley partial dislocation is passed over the plane of the paper, then the square atoms in Fig. 1(a) are displaced from their original positions as shown by the arrows in Fig. l(b). Not only is an intrinsic fault produced but the crystal is simultaneously disordered across the slip plane. In particular, 2AB bonds are converted to 1AA and 1BB bonds when referred to the area outlined by the solid line in Fig. 1. If, on the other hand, a Shockley partial is allowed to pass immediately above and immediately below the plane of the paper so as to displace the atoms in opposite directions as shown in Fig. l(c), an extrinsic fault is producedZ and twice the amount of disorder is introduced into the crystal as compared to the dislocation-produced intrinsic fault, if only broken first-neighbor bonds are counted. If an intrinsic stacking fault is produced by removing a close-packed plane of atoms in Fig. l(a) and displacing the two adjacent planes by 1/3a0[111], no wrong nearest-neighbor bonds are produced. Similarly, if an extra half plane of atoms with the same arrangement as any of those shown in Fig. l(a) is inserted between any two planes in the same figure, then an extrinsic stacking fault is produced in which once again no wrong nearest-neighbor bonds are produced. The latter two faults are bounded by Frank partial dislocations. Since, at least in the alloy CU3AU,3 nearly all of the ordering energy resides in the first nearest-neighbor interactions, intrinsic and extrinsic stacking faults and associated APB&apos;s of the Frank type are expected to have significantly lower energy than those of the Shockley type in CusAu in particular and quite likely in L1, and DO19 type alloys in general.
