The use of chemical additives to initiate such processes as particulate separation through flotation or dewatering through flocculation, is common in the mining industry. The dosing of additives is none the less poorly controlled from a process control viewpoint and it is perhaps fortuitous that over-dosing or misuse of chemicals is rarely catastrophic to the production cycle. In many cases, such events would go undetected if it were not for economic considerations. Recently, the advent of orebodies with finer mineral disseminations and the push for greater efficiencies in both production and tailing disposal have resulted in the need for greater control of the dosing and utilisation of chemical additives. The need to grind at higher pulp densities and to finer sizes and to dewater to higher solid contents are but two examples that require a more stringent understanding of the true role of additives in controlling the rheology of suspensions and the influence of additives on the surface chemistry of particles. The inter-relationship between the surface chemistry of particles and the role of additives in controlling suspension rheology is now well understood for systems in which the average particle shape in the mixture is spherical or close to spherical. Luckily, this is the case for a large number of systems in the mining industry and the true role of typical additives in these systems will be explored. Difficulties arise for suspensions containing clays or other platey or needle shaped minerals and in many cases, quite small quantities of platey minerals dominate the rheology of suspensions. The role of additives in controlling the rheology of asymmetric particle systems is more complex but the effect of the additive in changing particle alignment in solution is the key to understanding suspension behaviour. The manipulation of the rheology of asymmetric particle systems will also be explored.

Any engineering firm hoping to do business in the modern world must understand-and take into account-the social and economic realities of client, country, culture, and community. If these considerations are ignored, any large-scale international development project is doomed to failure even before it begins. In this changing world, the distinctions between `developed', `developing', and `less developed' nations are more and more blurred. The so-called `less-developed' and `developing' nations are rapidly acquiring technology, an educated man- agerial and technical class, manufacturing capa- bilities, a growing spectrum of developed financial and raw materials resources, and a broad range of labour skills. These nations are establishing themselves as an integral part of the modern world, on an equal footing with other nations and with justifiable expectations for an ever higher standard of living and an ever better quality of Life.

Mining projects draw together stakeholders with various degrees of experience in managing and assessing financial risk. When this risk is not fully appreciated or quantified, the potential for making decisions not suited to investor requirements is significantly increased. A feasibility study provides key information on project development potential, requiring detailed technical investigations with thorough financial analysis. Centaur Mining and Exploration (CME) owned and operated Cawse Nickel Operations (CNO), one of three Australian projects to develop and process vast amounts of near surface nickel resources. A technical ædue-diligenceÆ and æbankable feasibility studyÆ confirmed the large resource base, newly applied yet tested technology and relatively low unit costs would produce nickel in the lower half of industry operating costs. A number of production variables including capital requirements, delayed start-up, nickel grade, processing, maintenance and product output were outside the feasibility estimate. This was combined with exchange rate fluctuations and lower Ni prices. The inability to generate adequate cash flow and service debt repayments ultimately led to receivership and liquidation of all assets. Following the sale of CentaurÆs gold and nickel divisions, $A 784 million remained outstanding to creditors. This paper aims to define key issues leading to CNOÆs collapse by reviewing feasibility parameters, valuation methodology and project development. Some methods of assessing project viability are discussed with the aim of increasing stakeholder risk awareness.

ALTHOUGH the development of the various flotation processes during the last 8 years has been so revolutionary, this development has been, until recently, entirely confined to the separation of the gangue from the mixed metalliferous sulphides.The desirability of finding some method of separating the independent sulphides from such a miXture, by means of flotation, has long been recognized. ThIS need was emphasized when the slimes resulting from the grinding of Broken Hill sulphide ores were for the first time successfully dealt with by the Mineral Separation Company's process on the Central mine. This process proved the practicability of separating the sulphides of lead and zinc as a mixed concentrate from the gangue present in slime. Although this was a very notable achievement, the process has not been generally used, owing to the mixed lead and zinc concentrates resulting from the treatment being acceptable neither to the zinc nor the lead smelters.Although the introduction of eucalyptus oil in minute quantities as an emulsifying agent has simplified the work of the subsequent tabling of mixed sulphide concentrates, rendering unnecessary the burning off or removal of the oil, there will always be a considerable quantity of slimy product too fine to settle on the moving surface of the concentrating machines, and therefore requiring other means for its division into lead and zinc concentrates.

Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited have recently commissioned a 14 Megawatt power station adjacent to its underground coal mining operation at Appin NSW. The power station is fuelled by methane gas extracted from the coal seams 500 metres below the surface. The methane is compressed and cooled prior to its injection into the combustor of a single shaft gas turbine. The turbine is coupled through a reduction gearbox to an alternator. There is sufficient power generated to cover colliery load, with any excess being exported to Prospect County Council, which is the supply authority for the south western region of Sydney.

In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

The Yilgarn Block of Western Australia presents (figure 1) a number of problems for conventional diamond exploration based on heavy indicator mineral sampling. These problems are due to the geology and unique geomorphological development of the Yilgarn Block.Essentially the Yilgarn Block is a pene- plain developed on a craton composed of Archaean intrusive granitoid rocks with meta- morphosed greenstone; which, apart from regional uplift, has not been tectonically disturbed since planation by glaciation in the Permian. Therefore since the early Plesozoic the Yilgarn Block has been subjected to terres- trial weathering conditions. Bettany et al., (1984) identify two phases of particular importance in the development of the present landforms: 1. Periods of lateritization during the Tertiary which result in the ~lassi~al laterite profile (figure 2). Duricrust indurated : Fe and Al oxides Mottled zone : Clay and Fe oxides Saprolite or pallid zone : leached clay grading into fresh rock. 2. Subsequent periods of aridity and semi- aridity during which laterite development was truncated and reworking of laterite Occurred.

The kinetics of chlorination of alumina and bauxite with CO/CI2 mixtures were studied in the range 300-1100°C. The temperature of prior calcination is critical in determining the reaction rates. An optimum chlorination temperature in the range 600°C-750°C was demonstrated such that there is no increase in reaction rates with increasing temperature. This lack of rate sensitivity to rising temperature is largely a function of the influence of gaseous diffusion gradients in the porous alumina together with a progressive decrease in surface area.

Mine tailings represent one of the two largest sources of mine waste from the minerals industries (the other being waste rock). Given the problems of declining ore grades and growing production, tailings generation is increasing exponentially across the global mining industry. Common practice is for mines to build large containment dams to store tailings during operations, which are then rehabilitated following mine closure. At some sites, however, the controversial practices of riverine or marine dumping of tailings is still practiced. As recent tailings dam failures have shown, there are legitimate questions being raised about the long-term viability of leaving tailings above ground due to the risks of collapse and failure. At present, it is rare for mines to emplace tailings back into former mine voids following mine closure, most commonly into a former open pit mine void (although a fraction of the tailings may be used for underground mine backfill, this is minor in scale). The approach of in-pit tailings has numerous advantages, such as inherent physical stability, low to negligible acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) risks, as well as allowing more productive use of formerly mined land. In tropical areas where surface repositories are prone to leakage with potential for AMD and widespread dispersal of radionuclides (in the case of uranium mining), in-pit management provides particularly strong advantages – thorough hydrogeological studies are required, however, to address residual groundwater contamination risks and to establish sound, long-term environmental monitoring regimes for groundwater quality and subsidence issues. This paper presents a study of in-pit tailings management and compares it with surface repositories established in a tropical climate. The comparisons lead to the conclusion that, at least under tropical conditions, in-pit tailings management should be considered as world’s best practice – especially for radioactive uranium tailings.

Petroleum exploration is proceed ing in Western Australia at an ever- increasing pace. Results in recent years have been very successful, with the discovery and development of the Barrow Island oilfield and the Dongara gasfield, and the discovery of several major gas-condensate fields on the Northwest Shelf. The Northwest Shelf discoveries will have a big impact on the economy of the State by providing an abundant indigenous source of energy. Prospects for further large dis- coveries are believed to be excellent. The most prospective areas are thought to be on the continental shelf in the Carnarvon, Browse, Perth, Canning, and Bonaparte Gulf Basins.

Toughness testing of fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) at 28 days age is typically undertaken as part of quality control for the many applications where fibres are used in concrete, including shotcrete, tunnel segments, and cast-in-place tunnel linings. The performance achieved at 28 days is usually assumed to be retained with increasing age. However, as the average strength grade of concrete used in most tunnelling applications, including tunnel segments, has steadily increased over the last 20 years, this assumption is becoming increasingly unviable. This is because for some types of fibre the mode of post-crack fibre behaviour depends on the strength of the concrete and can change from a desirable high-energy pull-out mode to a low-energy rupture mode as the strength and age of concrete increases. This paper describes a series of trials performed over two years in which the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) C1609/C1609M beam tests were used to assess the performance of FRC reinforced with two widely used brands of steel and macro-synthetic fibre. The hooked-end steel fibres used for half the beams exhibited a dramatic fall in performance beyond 56 days age as the mode of failure changed from pull-out to rupture. The other fibre did not exhibit a fall in performance with age. This phenomenon highlights the need to quantify performance of FRC at much later ages when long-term performance is required, for example, to resist seismic events or changes in ground stress due to nearby excavations. As an alternative, a reduction factor may be applied to the performance of FRC mixes for which evidence of satisfactory long-term performance is not?available.CITATION:Bernard, E S, 2014. Despite the limited literature regarding the pressure filtration of mine tailings (compared to the large number of papers published each year on paste thickening of tailings) the number of mines dry stacking filtered tailings is approximately equal to the number of mines storing tailings in paste form. Main drivers for filtering tailings are: water recovery, future rehabilitation costs for tailings storage area and permitting requirements. In arid climates, the cost and scarcity of water justify the capital and operating costs associated with pressure filters. Further justification for filtered tailings is the potential for progressive reclamation of the dry stack, which can proceed earlier and faster than the reclamation of a tailings dam.Filtered tailings must be transported to the storage area by trucks or conveyors. For dry stacking, 70 - 80 per cent solids content (by mass) is typically acceptable, however the primary goal is to provide a filter cake that is consolidated and dry enough to prevent bridging and build-up on the materials handling equipment. It has been observed that high average solids contents (~70 per cent) can be achieved while the centre of the filter cakes is still wet and sticky, presenting challenges for the transportation of the solids. Appropriate controls must be in place to ensure consistently easy to handle solids are discharged from the filter.FLSmidth has installed two fine coal tailings dewatering systems in the United States. One of these systems incorporates a Deep Cone Thickener« upstream of the filter press to minimise the amount of water that must be filtered, while the other tailings filter press is fed by a high rate thickener. The increased international focus on sustainable development and cost improvement, coupled with the unpredictability and adverse impact of droughts in Australia and globally, has highlighted the critical need for responsible management of water within the minerals industry. The Rio Tinto Technology Group recently initiated a priority program to examine how water management practices could be improved within the GroupÆs spheres of activity. Rio Tinto Technical Services (TS), the technical services consulting group of the Technology Group, has for many years been undertaking water management reviews and assisting group operations with the development of responsible water management strategies and plans. Rio Tinto therefore requested that Rio Tinto Technical Services develop a world-class approach to mine water management that will drive improvement in strategic assurance and operational efficiency of water at the companyÆs managed operations across the world. The initiative, known as æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ, includes the selection and use of state-of-the-art management, technical tools and methodologies to strive for best practice. The Rio Tinto Technical Services approach facilitates a consistent and objective assessment of performance across the entire spectrum of complex water management issues within a mining operation, from initial exploration through to decommissioning and close-out of the operation. Based on this rigorous assessment, detailed action plans can be developed, prioritised and scheduled for subsequent implementation. This paper presents the progress and experience gained to date in the æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ program, demonstrated by means of a pilot study conducted at Northparkes Mines in New South Wales.

Non-intrusive methods for the reliable determination of dragline bucket and rigging performance have been achieved using physical modelling. Modelling offers a logical first step towards developing mathematical simulation models. The process of physical modelling has been applied successfully to predict dragline bucket performance and capacity as well as to demonstrate the effect of varying dump rope length on performance. ACIRL's Surface Miming Group has used physical modelling to carry out dragline bucket sizing for a new high productivity bucket and compared performance with Throng Coal's existing dragline bucket. The predicted bucket performance has since been confirmed in the field using dragline monitoring techniques.

Mount Isa Mines Limited recently commiss ioned an 800 tph Heavy Medium Preconcentration Plant for lead/zinc/silver ores. The decision to build this plant was made in late 1979 based largely on investigations conducted in the Company's pilot plant on a variety of ore types including Hilton ores, between 1972 and 1978. The paper reviews the historical develop- ment of the pilot plant heavy medium circuit through this period and illustrates the extent to which this work impacted on the final design criteria. This review also includes a description of plant operation, manning levels, process equipment and metallurgical performance Achieved.

There has been a substantial transition in the minerals industry R&D environment in the last five to ten years. Changes have occurred in the client and contractor base, the sources and scale of funding, industry imperatives, and competition and collaboration between contractors. These changes are documented from the viewpoint of research contractors in general, and universities and the JKMRC in particular.It is concluded that research groups need to be more proactive in managing their interface with the industry. Both industry and the research community m\lst devote the resources and attention necessary to ensure the effective transfer of research results into operations. The Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) has an important role in these processes, and in regulating the balance between contractor collaboration and competition.

Optimal throughput is a key objective for the successful operation of any manufacturing or processing business. In the mining industry in particular, in order to obtain maximum return on the significant capital investment in the physical assets involved, ensuring continuous throughput is a major focus for the complete leadership team. Failure to meet throughput objectives becomes a major source of distraction for management which too often attempts to solve shortfalls by æforcingÆ and æenforcingÆ production targets. This focus on the short term and the lack of attention to addressing root causes frustrates operators who attempt to satisfy unattainable short-term targets and lose sight of the long-term goal. Mount Isa Copper Operations, Xstrata Copper, North Queensland, had ambitious plans to increase throughput volume by ten per cent within a four month period to allow budgets to be achieved within the financial year. To achieve this, the process had to overcome the interplay of a multi-node (æsiloedÆ) production system and its associated inventories, each node, of which on the face of it at least, had more than enough ænameplateÆ capacity to meet these plans. However, the actual volume achieved at the end point of the system was well below this nameplate capacity and the system operated with an extraordinarily high standard deviation. The key issues in terms of making or exceeding plan were: how to substantially reduce the variability of the system and managing the inventories between nodes, how to synchronise throughput between the production nodes, and how to improve the decision-making ability within the process. In this paper, the implementation team has shown that a revolutionary process view of the operation together with appropriate planning decisions allowed increased throughput to be achieved without further capital investment.
