"Some of the weakest roof in United States coal mines is found in the Illinois Basin. Historically, the Illinois Basin has also suffered from high rates of unplanned roof falls and rock fall injuries. During the past decade, however, roof fall and rock fall injury rates have fallen dramatically, and are now lower than the national average. Several technologies are responsible for the improvement. Roof screen was rarely used ten years ago, but a number of mines now use it on a regular basis to prevent rock falls and rock fall injuries. Other roof skin control fixtures and work practices have contributed as well.The reduction in roof falls is also directly attributed to enhanced intrinsic roof support. Stiffer primary bolting patterns have reduced the magnitude of roof spalling and roof sag. They have also helped create a more intact beam that is able to be suspended from longer cable bolts. Cable bolt design methodology has also contributed to this reduction in roof falls. Some early cable bolt applications were unsuccessful because they employed as few as two cable bolts per intersection. This paper describes a methodology for estimating rock loads for support design.ROOF FALL TRENDS IN THE ILLINOIS BASINAlthough the Illinois Basin has a long history of poor roof conditions and high rates of unplanned roof falls and rock fall injuries, recent data indicates a change in the trend. Roof fall rates are determined by dividing the total number of non-injury roof falls by the total number of hours worked underground. The data is considered for 200,000-man hours. While the Illinois Basin was once a coalfield experiencing roof falls at nearly twice the national average, it is now at or below the national rate. Figure 1 indicates the trend over the past 20 years. In 2008, the Illinois Basin mines experienced 5.06 roof falls every 200,000-man-hours, compared to only 0.75 in 2018.There has also been a significant reduction in the rate of rock fall injuries in the Illinois Basin coal mines, as shown in Figure 2. In 2008 there were 1.48 rock fall injuries every 200,000-man-hours, compared to only 0.43 in 2018.ILLINOIS BASIN COAL ROOF GEOLOGYThe roof rock in the Illinois Basin has been studied in the past to understand the primary causes of roof failures (Molinda et al., 2008; Thompson, 2010; Molinda and Mark, 2010). Rusnak and Mark (2000) evaluated 10,000 laboratory strength tests from 800 rock units and concluded that for shale, siltstone, and sandstone, the strength of the Illinois Basin variety was less than half that of the same rock types in Central Appalachia (Figure 3). A study of Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) measurements in more than 200 US coal mines also found that weak roof was predominant in the Illinois Basin (Mark and Molinda, 2005)."

There are two types of ore transportation systems in use at Newmont's Magma Copper Co. San Manuel mine in Arizona-rail-mounted, box-type rotary cars and the newer rail-mounted, bottom-dumping ASEA cars. Though the cost per car for the ASEA units greatly exceeds the cost per rotary car, the advantages of the ASEA units, including much faster dump times, have made the ASEA system a successful alternative at the San Manuel mine. The rotary system of ore transportation has been in use at San Manuel since production began in 1956. The system employs 7.9-m3 box-type cars to transport ore by rail to shaft pocket areas. A rotating dumping mechanism turns three cars at a time upside down to empty them, and returns them to an upright position. Trains of 15 cars each are dumped in about six minutes. Each 15-car train is pulled by an 18-t rated trolley locomotive. There are about 400 rotary cars in service at San Manuel and the system is used for the majority of ore haulage. This well-proven rotary method was instrumental in achieving the December 1977 world record of 272 Mt hoisted from an underground copper mine. Magma Copper Co. began using ASEA cars in late 1977. Designed by ASEA of Sweden, the cars are built for San Manuel by Kasper-Hall Manufacturing Co. in Tucson. The cars basic design feature is a hinged floor that opens at the side as the car is pulled through the dump. As it passes over the dump, a fifth wheel attached to the hinged floor (opposite the hinges) travels along a rail in the dump. This rail dips down into the pocket and then returns to track level. As the fifth wheel travels along the rail, the car floor opens, the car dumps, and the floor is then returned to track level. As the car is dumping, the body remains suspended over the pocket by wheel rollers attached to each side of the dump. Trains of 10 cars each are emptied in about 45-50 seconds. Each ASEA train is pulled by an 18-t rated trolley locomotive, adapted at San Manuel to allow it to pass through the ASEA dump. At minimal cost, "wings" are welded to each side of the locomotive. These wings suspend the locomotive over the pocket as the train passes through the dump. Advantages of the ASEA System Major design characteristics of the ASEA and rotary systems are shown in the accompanying table. The comparison points out some of the following advantages demonstrated by the ASEA system. • Faster dumping-An ASEA train dumps in 50 seconds, while a rotary train takes at least six minutes. There is no stopping or starting when dumping an ASEA train. The train enters the dump area, dumps, and leaves in one continuous motion-in contrast to rotary trains which must stop and start five times to dump. With the rotary system, three cars are spotted in the dump mechanism by remote control. When the cars are in place, the train operator activates the dump, the cars are turned over, and then returned to an upright position. This process is repeated until all 15 cars in the train are emptied.

Plant operators in the mineral processing industry have been implementing expert systems for several years now, with the intent to increase production and reduce costs. Most systems have been installed on grinding circuits of some type and have proven that the technology is viable in that application. However, few applications on other processes have been attempted for various reasons, such as lack of reference sites, complexity of the process, lack of suitable measurements and lack of confidence in the technology. The successful application of an expert system on an Alumina Calcining kiln is the first such application in the West Indies Alumina Company (Windalco), and demonstrates how this technology can be successfully applied to other processes. The key objective of an expert system is to optimize the process. To achieve this the process must first be stabilized, followed by optimization of the operating parameters. The steps taken by this expert system to optimize the process are: • Check for abnormal conditions and deal with them using a prioritized set of special actions. • Use a selection of rule blocks to stabilize the process. • Once the process is stable, achieve additional benefits through further optimization of the process. The potential benefits that a user can expect to achieve through installing an expert system can be assessed on the basis that performance will improve from that of an "average operator" to that of the "best operator" performing at his optimum for 24 hours a day, every day. The quantifiable process benefits include: • Increased production • More consistent product quality • Reduced operating costs • Reduced standard deviation of key variables • Consistent plant operation The success of this project was measured in several ways: project implementation, realised economic benefits, and realised non-economic benefits. With a commitment to maintain the system over the long term, the longevity of the system is assured and will become an important part of the Alumina Calcining control strategy at Windalco. This paper discusses the various phases of implementing the ABB Expert Optimizer expert system, what the benefits were and the procedure that is in place to maintain the system to ensure continued long term success.

Water contact angles of talc powders were determined from the values of the heats of immersion measured using a flow microcalorimeter. The results were used to calculate the contact angles using a rigorous thermodynamic relation. In the present work, the calculation was carried out using the temperature coefficient of the contact angles determined experimentally using another method. The results obtained in the present work on several different talc samples are compared with those obtained using other methods.

A heavy-mineral deposit about 1.6 kilometers (I mile) in length and averaging about three meters (10 feet) in thickness is exposed approximately130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Denver, along Interstate 70, in Elbert County, Colorado near the town of Limon. The deposit is exposed in a geomorphic feature known locally as Titanium Ridge. The dominant heavy minerals, accounting for about 70% of the total heavy mineral suite by weight, are ilmenite, garnet, and zircon. The mineralized zone appears in a series of visually interpretable facies that are stacked vertically and represent subtidal, forebeach, backbeach, washover fan, and aeolian depositional environments. These paleoenvironments are analogous to depositional environments represented by a modern heavy-mineral bearing facies tract on St. Catherines Island, Georgia. Thus, Titanium Ridge provides evidence that heavy-mineral accumulation models for late Cenozoic deposits in the Georgia and Florida coastal plains are applicable to heavy-mineral deposits of the Western Interior subsurface and, by implication, the Western Interior Seaway, extending from Mexico to the Canadian Arctic.

The intensity of environmental conflict, the delays and legal battles that have marked the 1970's suggest the need for additional processes to resolve environmental disputes. Our present means frequently fail to address the real issues separating individuals and institutions. They are primarily adversary processes that foster polarization and reduce cooperative efforts. At the Office of Environmental Mediation, we have no quarrel with adversary processes nor with polarization, for both serve as important spurs to necessary change. We do seek cooperation among parties at a point where there can be a realistic expectation of success in facilitating a resolution of their mutual differences.

Haul truck capacities have increased due to their economies of scale in large-scale surface mines. These high-capacity trucks impose dynamic loads on haul roads. A previous study estimated the dynamic forces imposed by ultra-large trucks on haul roads to be more than three times the static load. These dynamic forces exacerbate haul road stresses and deformation. Current haul road response models are 2D and use static truckloads for low-capacity trucks. No models capture the ultra-large truck dynamic effects on haul road structural response. This study uses 3D finite element (FE) modeling to compute the haul road response to ultra-large truck dynamic loading. The dynamic forces were modeled using multibody dynamics (MBD) in MSC.ADAMS. These forces were used in an FE model developed, verified, and validated in ABAQUS, to simulate the response of the haul road to the dynamic truck forces. The road was modeled using an elastoplastic Mohr-Coulomb model. The results showed that road deformation decreases with increasing layer modulus and increases with increasing payload. Increasing the base modulus from 100 MPa to 450 MPa reduced the maximum deformation from 258 mm to 62 mm. When the subbase elastic modulus increased from 100 MPa to 500 MPa, the maximum deformation decreased from 160 mm to 84 mm. Increasing the payload from 0 to 120% of the rated load increased the maximum wearing surface deformation from 131 mm to 216 mm. This study forms a basis for designing structurally competent haul roads for improving haulage efficiency and truck and operator health.

The substantial investment in tunnels anticipated in the next twenty years has focused new attention on the economics of tunnel construction itself and on some costly problems associated with underground work: the uncertain geologic conditions, the performance and adaptability of men and equipment, and the need for quicker, more efficient excavation methods. There also exists a need to develop better ways of estimating tunnel construction. Inaccuracies in current bid estimates stem from a number of causes, among them (1) the effects of geologic conditions, which are not adequately known prior to construction, (2) the dependence of actual cost on the construction method used and on the interactions among the operations occurring underground, and (3) the reliability of tunneling equipment. Inability to estimate final costs for conventional tunneling more accurately has in turn caused difficulty in gauging the costs and benefits attributable to new tunneling technologies either under development or for which R&D programs are planned. ATTRIBUTES OF THE TUNNEL COST MODEL This paper presents a computer based Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) which quantitatively assesses the uncertainties inherent in underground work, and is detailed enough to aid in preparing estimates or bids. Introduction Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC) started gold production at its Masbate gold mine early in 1980. This involved an open-pit mine and a 3.5-k/d (3850-stpd) carbon-in-pulp processing facility (Pizzaro and Antonio, 1981). When this operation started, the mine began stockpiling sub-grade milling material averaging 1 g/t (0.029 oz per st) gold. Furthermore, geologists estimated that there were additional low grade reserves within the ultimate pit limits. These amounted to 2.4 Mt (2.6 million st) with an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.03 oz per st) gold. The success of low cost heap leaching prompted an investigation to determine if this tech¬nique would be applicable for the low grade Masbate ore. The findings were favorable and a series of laboratory tests were undertaken. These tests indicated the amenability of this subgrade milling ore to heap leaching. Depending on ore size, gold extractions of more than 60% were obtained. To further define operating parameters for a commercial heap leaching plant, a 400-t (440-st) batch pilot plant was built and operated. These test results were used to design the first commercial heap leaching plant in the Philippines. One design concern was the control of solutions during the rainy season. Due to the material's low grade, every effort was made to minimize capital and operating costs. To this end, surplus mining equipment from the copper operations of ACMDC and used machinery in the crushing circuit were considered. Location: The Masbate gold heap leaching operations are located on the northeastern part of Masbate Island, Philippines. This is about 480 km (300 miles) south-east of Manila. Climate: The climate is moderate with two distinct periods. The dry season runs from January through June, and the rainy season extends from July through December. During the wet season, the rainfall at the mine site averages 300 mm/m (11.8 in. per month) for a total of about 2000 mm/year (78 in. per year). However, heavy downpours in excess of 100 mm/h (4 in. per hour) can occur. Geology: Four distinct rock types have been identified in the pit area. They are tuffaceous agglomerates, andesitic agglomerates, metasedimentary rocks, and hornblende augite andesitic porphyry. The tuffaceous agglomerate occupies the northern and western flanks of the mine. Andesitic agglomerates are localized distinctly in the central portion of the volcanic plug within the mine site. The eastern boundary of the mine is occupied by metasedimentary rocks, whereas, the hornblende augite andesitic porphyry occurs as an intrusive within the andesitic agglomerate and tuffaceous agglomerate. Some areas of the pit contain high proportions of clay minerals, requiring an agglomeration step in the flowsheet. This ensures satisfactory percolation through the heaps. Remote control is usually associated with deep mine, continuous mining machines. This is because thin-seam operation precludes an onboard operator's compartment or the mine has approval to conduct extended cut mining. Using a tethered or radio-linked control box, the remote operator is typically situated 3 to 15 m (10 to 50 ft) from the working face. The operator receives direct operational cues through senses like vision, hearing and feel. Remote control is sometimes touted as a safety feature. However, this is not always true, as operators are not provided protection from roof and rib falls or being crushed between the machine and a rib. Remote control operators are also left exposed to dust and noise. Teleoperation described here is the computer-based, distant control of mining machinery from a protected operator compartment located out of the line-of-sight from the operational site. Video, sound and other sensory information are gathered through sensors and electronically transmitted to and displayed at the operator's location. The teleoperator responds to the information and makes decisions that are initiated by control devices (usually switches). These control commands are then electronically transmitted to the re¬mote machinery and the appropriate machine function(s) are carried out. Teleoperation increases the safety of mining machine operators as it removes them from the immediate vicinity of hazards. The US Bureau of Mines' involvement with teleoperation dates back to 1979. Following feasibility studies, a highwall milling system (HMS) was developed and tested. A deep, thin-seam, room-and-pillar system (TSRPS) has been designed and is currently being surface tested.

Experience over the past eight years has proven that partnership and cooperation in mineral engineering education is essential to maintain programs in this field. At this moment the joint European Mineral Masters Engineering Course (EMMEC) has three programs in the areas of mining, minerals engineering and geotechnical/environmental engineering, offered by combinations of nine universities in seven European countries. About 25 companies are associated with the universities in the Federation of European Mineral Programs (FEMP) which coordinates these activities. The EMMEC has applied for recognition under the newly launched EU “Erasmus Mundus” program in which the EU makes 280 million Euro available for bursaries for non-European students and scholars.

Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

The adaptation of pelletizing processes involves the coordination of various factors such as temperatures, gas flows, productions, etc., in order to obtain optimum performance. The consequent problems are considerable due to the large number involved as well as the lack of knowledge of their correlation. It is therefore essential to establish a fundamental theory which takes into account the heat transfer phenomena and the secondary factors which are relevant to the properties of the product. Straight grate and grate kiln pelletizing processes involve heating of a stationary bed on a travelling grate. The heat transfer conditions are therefore of primary importance. This is why this article pays particular attention to conditions which obtain when a stationary bed is heated, in which certain special reactions occur. The conclusions drawn from this penetration of the heat transfer phenomena can be expressed in postulates acting as guide-lines for the establishment of proto-typal processes. Examples of elaborating such processes are also given in the article. Some operational experience at LKAB are also given.

In this decade of the 1.970's it is forecast that eight billion cubic yards of rock will be excavated from 400, 000 miles of new tunnels, drifts and other underground workings in the western world, according to estimates in a report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is expected that the cost of this work will be in excess of $54 billion in constant 1970 dollars. Most of this underground excavation will be in mining -- 97% of the tunnel length and 89% of the volume - -the balance in construction. In addition to this huge excavating task, in the 18 developed nations of OECD, will be projects in the Communist Bloc and in the developing nations. Underground excavation requires the successful completion of three principle activities: A. Break -- to free rock from the solid work face. B. Remove-- to clear the work area of broken rock. C. Support -- to assure stability of rock surrounding the underground excavation and to eliminate risk of rock collapse. In today's fully mechanized excavation systems, continuous miners, roadheaders or tunnel borers, (A) break the rock loose from the face, and (B) remove broken rock with their mucking devices and load it onto belt conveyors, mine cars, trucks, or any other appropriate haulage system for disposal. With full production from the Casteel Mine in 1987 The Doe Run Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Fluor Corporation, encountered a significant increase of copper and iron to the Viburnum Mill. This major change of the lead, zinc, and copper metal ratios in the ore created circuit problems which adversely affected concentrate quality. Recognizing the problem, the company embarked on a metallurgical research program to include laboratory, pilot plant, and plant testing. The program developed an innovative copper prefloat process which both increased copper recovery and significantly improved concentrate quality. The process was tested and first operated at Doe Run's Brushy Creek Mill then installed at the Viburnum Mill in 1992. A brief history of development, plant operating data, and other potential applications for the patented processes will be described in the paper.

Five sewer connections were required to divert Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)from existing outfalls to an old underutilized large diameter brick sewer (the Easterly Interceptor). The connections were part of an on-going CSO control program by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) in the City of Cleveland, Ohio. Each connection was made by pipejacking and hand-mining a fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) pipe through soft glaciolacustrine clays and silts. Jet grouting was utilized to stabilize the soils and fill the voids surrounding the interceptor prior to making the underground connection. Reinforced concrete liners were constructed inside the aging brick sewer to provide structural stability during ground improvements and connection work. The project also involved micro tunneling two approximately400 foot lengths of FRP pipe through soft ground using a slurry pressure balanced machine.

A complete dust-control policy can keep these emissions confined, sealed and suppressed, protecting the environment from fugitive, airborne dust. There is a large economic opportunity associated with improving metallurgical performance in mineral processing plants that use process control. Thus, future control systems will be developed towards more sophisticated user friendly, computer-based systems that use powerful software analysis and control techniques. Auto-tuning, adaptive control and process models will gain expanded use because of their transparent availability to the system designer. Control of individual unit operations will be optimized and coordinated through expert systems that monitor economic conditions and management directives and direct operations accordingly. Plant areas, once considered cost centers, will be integrated into plant-wide control systems for economic control and optimization. This article looks at new control hardware, process sensors, control strategies and software development tools. It also looks at the economics driving the continued development of advanced process control systems. Process control systems routinely used in the mining industry were born when the microprocessor was invented. They have continued along an evolutionary path from vendor specific processing hardware and proprietary operating systems to computer industry standard "open architecture" systems. The many economic forces that drive the development and functionality of these process control systems will cause this evolutionary process to continue. The opportunity to make a close study of the available geologic data existing along the line of the California Aqueduct crossing of the Garlock fault in the Tehachapi Mountains was brought about first by my involvement in the prebid examinations, and later with contractors' claim cases. The California Aqueduct crosses through the western end of the Tehachapi Mountains and cuts across the Garlock fault zone at a location about 9 miles east from its junction with the San Andreas fault zone. This is about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 38 miles southeast of Bakersfield (Fig. 1) (1). This map was published after the tunnels were started and shows the corrected geology. At the crossing the fault has north and south branches which extend northeastward for about 22 miles before converging. In the vicinity immediately east of the tunnel line the north branch of the fault starts to converge toward the west. After crossing the line it passes under the upper plate of the apparent easterly extension of the Pastoria thrust fault, so the actual junction with the south branch is obscured. The aqueduct design called for the expected active slip zone of the north Garlock fault branch to be crossed by the 2,800 foot long Pastoria siphon, which connects with the north portal of Tehachapi Tunnel No. 3. The tunnel would extend through the western end of Genghus Ridge which lies between the north branch and the main south Garlock fault zone in Beartrap Canyon. Here again the

The main train station of Leipzig in Germany is currently being upgraded from a head station to a partially thru station. In order to achieve this, significant ground improvements are necessary. Soil freezing for example is used to create the excavation box retaining walls. The freezing works will be carried out from two tunnels with an inner diameter of 2.4 m (~ 8ft). The tunnels were constructed by the pipe jacking method. The cutter head of the machine was equipped with discs and scrapers. Driving and excavation was carried out using a bentonite supported face. Due to the small arrival shafts, the machine had to be lifted out in components. The essential limitation of settlements during the drives was achieved even better than expected.
