Drilling tests with a 11/4-in. diameter roller bit were performed on Berea and Bandera sandstones and Leuders limestone using water and two conventional drilling muds as circulating fluids to evaluate the influence of dynamic filtration on penetration rate. The muds possessed widely differing API fluid-loss properties. Mud filtrate was constrained to flow beneath the bit; no filtrate flowed radially through the borehole wall. Rock pore pressure at three different locations ahead of the bit, cumulative filtrate volume, borehole pressure and bit location were monitored during drilling. The rock samples, cored in three orientations with respect to bedding planes, possessed a wide range of liquid permeabilities. and were drilled at borehole-to-formation pressure differentials of 0, 250, 500 and 1,000 psig. The effect on penetration rate of API fluid loss, borehole pressure and rock permeability was studied. Rock permeability damage and pore pressure gradients beneath the bit were evaluated. The importance of borehole-to-formation pressure differential was illustrated for each drilling fluid and rock permeability combination. Penetration rates decreased with increased borehole pressure and reduced fluid loss. The observed penetration rate reduction due to changing fluid Ioss was attributed to decreased filtrate flow and improved mud cake plastering hy the low fluid-loss mud. The reduction in filtrate flow could not be related to spurt-loss phenomena. Rock permeability influences penetration rate through particle invasion ahead of the hit, which damage leads to high pressure gradients. Penetration rate variance with sample orientation was evident for water-drZled samples but less obvious for mud-drilled rocks. Permeability damage beneath the bit ranged from 1 to 3 cm. Maximum damage occurred in the first 0.1 cm. Pressure gradients varied with API fluid 10.s.s and could be correlated with penetration rate. The pressure gradient was found to influence penetration rare in rocks of all permeabilities tested. INTRODUCTION Early microbit and small-scale drilling experiments proved to be invaluable contributions to understanding the mechanics of drilling at depth. For example, the effect of borehole-to-pore pressure differential on drilling rate was demonstrated conclusively by Murray and Cunningham', Eckel' and others .' However, the effects of various drilling fluid properties on drilling rate, particularly filtration, have not been studied extensively on a laboratory basis. Microbit correlations of penetration rate with different viscosity and API fluid-loss muds led EckelV o conclude that viscosity and density. more than API fluid loss, were the most important fluid properties in controlling drill bit penetration rates. Ferguson and Klotz6 studied filtration beneath the bit and stated that the maximum amount of filtrate which could conceivably flow beneath a drilling bit could be described by a potential function associated with flow from a moving disc source. and be characterized by a depth-of-filtrate invasion. Invasion depth is a function of penetration rate, formation porosity and permeability, flooding efficiency, pressure difference between borehole and formation and borehole radius, assuming that no filtrate flows through the borehole walls. Electric analog and experimental measurements were obtained, assuming no plugging of the formation pores. Theoretically, filtrate invasion was predicted to extend from 1- to 15-hole radii beneath the cutting surface; experimental results indicated that the extent of invasion was only Y2 in. Comparing these data with results of core-plugging experiments by Norwak and Krueger' led Ferguson and Klotz to state that the drilling operation apparently contributes to higher filtration rates than are observed in nondrilling core filtration tests in which the core face is jetted and scraped. Glenn and Slusser: in describing a linear filtering system in which a rotating bit continuously scraped mud cake from the surface but did not penetrate Alundum cores, stated that mud-solids invasion and permeability damage of the cores were most severe in the first 2 to 3 cm. The filtrate flow rate through the core was found to stabilize after sufficient time had elapsed for the formation of an internal mud cake whose effective permeability was estimated to be 50 to 300 times as high as that of bulk filter cake. Krueger and Vogel reported core permeability damage depths up to 12 in. during a 5-day exposure period in which filter cake buildup was prevented. Havenaar pointed out that the discrepancy between reported and calculated values of filtrate volume obtained in the experiments of Ferguson and Klotz was due, among other things, to failure of the reported API fluid loss to truly represent filtration beneath the bit. Williams," Pro-koplz and others"" have shown that dynamic filtration tests (where a flow of fluid parallel to the filter surface continually erodes the deposited filter cake until a dynamic equilibrium between wall-shearing forces and normally directed compaction forces is attained) yield higher filtration rates than do static tests. RECENT investigations1,2 of the low-cycle fatigue behavior of pure copper under strain cycling conditions have shown that a unique saturation stress level is eventually attained for each value of applied plastic strain amplitude. The dislocation substructure of copper at the saturation stress level is in the form of cells whose diameter decreases with increasing saturation stress level, i.e., plastic strain amplitude. In addition, both the saturation stress level and the cellular substructure are completely reversible. That is, the saturation stress level and accompanying cell size are determined solely by the present conditions of testing and are, therefore, independent of any previous cyclic history. The mechanical and substructural reversibility observed in pure copper, which has a relatively high stacking fault energy, is not observedz for Cu-7.5A1 which has a much lower stacking fault energy. This implies that easy cross slip (wavy slip) is a prerequisite for reversible fatigue behavior. A dispersion of fine, nondeformable particles of a second phase in a metal matrix tends to stabilize substruc- tures introduced by forming operations during subsequent elevated-temperature heat treatments.3 This raises the question as to whether a finely dispersed second phase can induce an element of irre-versibility into the cyclic deformation behavior of a wavy slip material at room temperature, due to partial stabilization of the initially introduced substructure. FROM the viewpoint of the oil producer, the oil refiner, the oil marketer, and the investor, in oil securities, a brief picture of the crude oil supply and demand in the present critical season of the year will be timely and interesting. Although crude oil production has been in a comparatively poor statistical position this year, increased sales and sustained refinery and crude oil prices have allowed increased profits for many oil companies. The large amount of crude oil going into storage during the present period of peak consumption, just previous to the major yearly fall decline in consumption, has caused oil producers to make plans to leave the oil in the ground for the present in several of the areas of large flush production. The present moment is looked on as the turning point in the current year.

The strain-amplitude- dependent part of the internal friction of alluminum after several ther momechanical treatments has been measured in the I-cycle range and at the ambient temperature. The internal friction in the outer layer of the torsional specimen us stress is computed from the experimental data. The curues obtained are analyzed in tevnzs of u coirzbinntion of AH and p, which aye, respectively, due to the vecersible unpinning from weak pills and to the plastic strain. Considerirlg the notion of thermally activated unpinning and repinning, it is shown that in our experimental conditions tlze dislocation lines acl as in the H model of Granato and Liiclze. It is also seen that the internal friction p which appears at higher- strains call be described by a simple expression which is in good agreement with our results. A qualitative interpretatiorz is proposed by combining these new types of intelpnal fviction. We define the internal friction 6 as half the ratio of the dissipated energy aW during one cycle to the maximum supplied strain energy W of a material submitted to a periodic stress. Experiment and theory show that internal friction varies with stress above a critical value.' Below this value the internal friction is strain-amplitude-independent and is often masked by an experimental background; so we shall call it AB. ~bove this critical value, the internal friction is strain-amplitude-dependent. This quantity is usually called aH:' and it can be explained as a thermal unpinning of dislocations.3-6 Furthermore, at higher stresses, a rapid increase of internal friction appears. This phenomenon could be caused by the plastic strain,' so we shall call it Ap. It seems interesting to us to study the influence of several t her momechanical treatments on the curve internal friction 6 vs strain E, in order to study the variation of AH and p with the concentration and the repartition of linear and point defects. The phosphate ores mined in middle Tennessee typically consist of granular rock phosphate particles disseminated in a clayey matrix. In the TVA plant near Columbia, Tenn., the phosphate ore is mined, made into a slurry with the addition of a small amount of sodium hydroxide as dispersant, and treated in a hydroseparator to remove minus 10 micron material. The hydro-separator underflow, comprising a rough concentrate, is transported by pipeline to the plant; the hydro-separator overflow, comprising a tailing, is flocculated by addition of calcium sulphate and is discharged to settling ponds at a rate of about 1400 gpm. Sedimentation in the ponds produces a clarified effluent, which may be recycled for use as process water or discharged to surface drainage. This method of tailing treatment is not entirely satisfactory since poor sedimentation characteristics of the tailing result in poor ultimate utilization of pond storage volume.

C. M. Decroly (University of Brussels, Belgium) — The importance of the fluorides in the process metallurgy of special metals has already been accepted and it will probably increase in the future. Free energy diagrams as such established by Professor Kellogg are therefore very useful. It is interesting to note that the absolute value of the standard free energy of formation of HF increases with temperature, whereas for almost all the other fluorides it decreases; consequently it should be theoretically possible to reduce all the fluorides of the metals which, at low temperature, have a greater affinity for fluorine than hydrogen by this last element, provided a sufficiently high temperature is used in order to have a good efficiency. However, with regard to the reduction of UFe by hydrogen, I doubt that it will be possible to obtain directly the metal at comparatively low temperatures. There are other uranium fluorides which are more stable than UF6 and it is very likely that such fluorides will be obtained first. For example, in considering the reaction: UF6gas + H2gas + UF1so1id + 2 HFgas it is found, using the thermodynamic data of Brewer et al, that ?H298 = —66 kcal and ?G°298, = —65.2 kcal. As a result, the reduction of UF6 to UF4solld should proceed spontaneously even at ordinary temperature. On the other hand, the standard free energy of formation of UF4solid at 298°K is AG°298 = -209 kcal per mol of F2. The reduction of UF4 by hydrogen will be practically difficult and, as it is known, the only practical way of reducing this compound is to use alkaline-earth metals such as calcium or magnesium. I should like to point out, further, that the fluorination of many metal oxides can be carried out very easily by using the ammonium difluoride method of preparation, which renders the use of fluoride gas unnecessary. The first compound formed is generally a double fluoride of the metal and ammonium. This compound can be decomposed by heating either in a vacuum or in an inert atmosphere, ammonium fluoride being volatilized leaving the metal fluoride in a very pure state. H. H. Kellogg (author's reply)—Professor Decroly is quite right in pointing out that the formation of lower halides of uranium may complicate the reduction of UF6 by H2. I was unable to find his reference to the free energy of formation of UF4 in the compilation of Brewer.13 however. The value of AG°298, = —209 kcal for formation of ½ UFa seems rather high, and I hope the source of this value may be made clear.

A QUARTER of a century ago, a pessimistic Belgian financier in conversation with the founder of the Belgian Congo, that great ruler, Leopold II, emphasized the danger to the colony should the synthesis of rubber be discovered. The king replied, "I do not worry. The Congo has had its ivory period; it now has its rubber period. Tomorrow it will have that of its mineral wealth; eventually that of agricultural products." That "tomorrow" arrived some twenty years ago. Through her mines the Belgian Congo has survived the present depression, and her mines for the next decade will safeguard her. The Congo, in turn. is the surest foundation industrially and financially of Belgium itself. In few, if any, political units is mining as dominant as in the Belgian Congo. In 1930, 1931 and 1932 mineral products represented respectively 67.9 per cent. 70.5 per cent and 59.3 per cent, of the total exports. In 1933 for each white person in the colony, there was produced about $1,675 worth of gold, diamonds, copper, tin ore and minor mineral products and in 1930 the per capita production, notwithstanding the larger population, was almost $2,000.

Binary aluminum solid-solution alloys containing various amounts of silver, magnesium, and zinc were prepared by careful directional solidification, and the hydrostatic and X-ray densities were compared. With the exception of the Al(Ag) alloys, the X-ray densities were consistently greater than the hydrostatic measurements, in agreement with earlier observations by Ellwood. In contrast to Ell-wood's interpretation in terms of vacant lattice sites associated with Brillouin zone effects, a tentative explanation based on the existence of solidification microshrinkage was favored. This hypothesis was confirmed by an examination of Al(Zn) alloys prepared by vapor diffusion of zinc into aluminum. The hydrostatic and X-ray densities were now in very close agreement, and it was concluded that the filling of Brillouin zones in aluminum solid-solution alloys does not necessarily result in the formation of defect structures containing an excess of vacant lattice sites. ThE existence of defect structures of the vacancy type in alloys in which the excess vacancies have an electronic rather than a thermal or mechanical, and so forth, origin is well recognized. Examples of incomplete lattices of this type are to be found in the Ni-Al,1-3 Fe-Ni-A1,4 c~-Ni-Al,5 Fe-Cu-Al,= and Co-A17 systems. These defect structures are of a special kind in that the intermediate phases possess an ordered atomic arrangement or superlattice, and in some instances the vacancy concentration may be unusually large, e.g., at 45.25 at. pet Ni in NiA1, approximately 8.8 pet of the lattice sites are unoccupied. Ellwood8-10 has reported similar defect structures in the aluminum solid solution alloys of the Al-Zn and A1-Mg systems and in alloys of the Au-Ni system." In Al(Zn) the (apparent) vacancy concentration rose, somewhat irregularly, to a maximum of about 2 pet vacant sites at 25 at. pet Zn, while in Al(Mg) the (apparent) vacancy concentration increased continuously to 1.7 pet at 15 at. pet Mg. An explanation in terms of Brillouin zone overlap was attempted, although Pearson12 has pointed out the difficulty of reconciling the observations with zone theory. However, the possibility of the effect being caused by the Fermi surface just touching a plane of energy discontinuity inside a prominent Brillouin zone has, in general, been accepted. In fact, Massal-ski13 has interpreted Ellwood's8 observations as confirmation of Leigh's14 theoretically predicted zone overlap occurring at approximately 2.67 electrons per atom. Unfortunately, Massalski was apparently unaware that Ellwood9 had revised his earlier results considerably, and the revised data did not confirm Leigh's analysis. Ellwood's clata were reexamined by the present authors who noted a possible correlation between the percentage defects as a function of alloy composition and the temperature interval of solidification measured from the respective equilibrium diagrams. This suggested an explanation in terms of shrinkage porosity rather than vacant lattice sites, and pointed to the desirability of reexamining appropriate alloy systems using: both Ellwood's method of specimen preparation (casting followed by wrought fabrication) and alternativ'e methods, i.e., diffusion, which might be expected to minimize, or even completely obviate, microporosity. ALLOY PREPARATION 1) Cast Allolys and Aluminum Single Crystals. Al(Ag), Al(Mg;l, and Al(Zn) alloys of various compositions up to 20 at. pet silver, 13.5 at. pet mg, and 30 at. pet Zn were prepared by melting under helium and casting into graphite molds. In the first two systems, the maximum alloying addition was quite close to the limit of solid solubility, but the possibility of transformation to a' during quenching somewhat restricted the suitable Al(Zn) composition range. The alloys were prepared from high-purity aluminum, a lot analysis showing 0.002 wt pet Cu, 0.002 wt pet Fe, and 99.996 wt pet A1 by difference. The silver, magnesium, and zinc were of 99.99+, 99.98+, and 99.998 wt pet respectively. Each composition was analyzed chemically. The as-cast ingots measured 7/16 in. diam and 5 in. length. One in. was removed from the top of the ingot, and the bottom 3 in. was machined to 0.275 in. diam; a point was also machined on the smaller diameter end. The remainder of the original ingot served as a top riser during subsequent remelting and controlled solidification. The machined ingots were now remelted using a Bridgman soft-mold technique to ensure directional solidification and, therefore, a minimum of micro-shrinkage. Alumina powder was used as mold material contained in an alundum thimble, and this crucible was placed in a helium-filled Vycor tube. The assembly was lowered through a suitable temperature gradient at approximately 0.5 in. min-l, and the risered portion of the casting was subsequently removed by sawing.

In recent investigation of drilling processes, the U.S. Bureau of Mines measured the operating characteristics of two percussive drills. Basically, this entailed measuring maximum piston velocities while drilling. The maximum piston velocity is not necessarily the same as the striking velocity. The latter is usually somewhat lower1 because most commonly used drills provide an air cushion which slows the piston just before it comes in contact with the drill rod. Penetration rates for the two drills were determined in nine rock types, and the physical properties of the same nine rocks were measured and tabulated. Then the penetration rates were plotted against the individual properties to determine the general relationships on which methods for predicting drilling rates could be based.2

The Thunder Mountain mining district is in eastern Valley County, Idaho. It is of undefined extent but nearly all of the development is confined to the ridge between Monumental and Marble creeks in unsurveyed T. 19 N., R. 11 E. (Fig. 1.) The district is still remembered among the mining men of Idaho because of the ill-advised rush there in 1902, but available evidence indicates that optimism regard-ing the future development of the gold deposits of the district is warranted. The former disappointment arose from the fact that many who took part in the early rush hoped for bonanza deposits, whereas the district is characterized by large masses of low tenor. In 1926 the writer,, assisted by C. Y. Behre, 3r., incidental to other work in the region, devoted four days to the detailed examination of the then access-ible workings in the district. Tha major workings in the Sunnyside, Venable, Standard and H-Y mines, most of which were still in good shape, were examined., Surface exposures at the Dewey were studied, but the main workings there have long been caved. The time available did not permit more than a cursory examination of the surface at a distance from the mines. Sufficient data have been gathered, how-ever, from published and unpublished accounts, production records and mine maps so that the major features of this deposit, by far the most productive in the dis-trict, can be summarized. The kindness of Messrs. Dan McRae and R: A. Davis in making available information regarding the mines of the district, a rd of these men and others in recounting early history and their observations in now inaccessible workings, have aided materially in preparing the present paper. A brief summary of the salient characteristics of the district has already been published.1/ Cir-cumstances have contributed to delay in the publication of the full official report, which will contain mine maps and ?such other detailed data as could be ontained. In view of the present interest in gold deposits it seems desirable to present here a summary of results of the study.

The smaller net gain is accounted for in three ways: (1) A greater lag in enrollment of those elected in the last quarter of the year; (2) an increase in the number of applications involving change of status from Junior Member to Member; and (3) an increase of 167 in the loss by death by resignation and by suspension in 1939 as compared with 1938. Experience shows that at the end of a year of less prosperous conditions in the mineral industries, and, therefore, among engineers engaged in these industries, resignations and suspensions are more numerous. Business and industrial indexes all show 1938 to have been somewhat less prosperous than 1937; but the improvement in 1939 should be reflected in the record for 1940.

As recently as the mid-1930's, steam and rail haulage were still the primary means of moving large quantities of rock. However, 2- to 5-ton standard on-highway trucks were beginning to be used in the mining industry's efforts to lower haulage costs. It was quickly obvious that rubber-tired equipment was more flexible, faster and more maneuverable. The trend towards haulage trucks had begun. Now while savings were being realized, the severe operating conditions encountered in open pit operations proved too much for the lightly constructed frames, gasoline engines and highly inflated tires. As a result, a few years later, the first 10 to 15-ton, two-axle heavy duty trucks were designed specifically to operate under off-highway conditions.

In selecting the best system of mining for a particular operation, many different factors must be considered. The system to be finally selected should be that which provides: 1) The highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel. 2) The lowest cost per ton of product. 3) The maximum coal production per man-shift. 4) The most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use. 5) The maximum percent recovery of coal per acre of reserve consistent with cost and subsidence rights. 6) Consideration for the ecology of the area. Some of the important factors to be considered when choosing a method of mining are: 1) Amount of cover over the coal seam. 2) Type of the rock in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam including: (a) the thickness of the coal seam; (b) the nature and location of any impurities or irregularities; (e) the dip (or pitch) of the coal seam; (d) the nature and direction of any definite cleavage ill the czoa1 seam; (e) the hardness of the coal; (f) the structural strength of the coal; and (g) the presence, anti amount, of explosive gas (methane). 4) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 5) Nature and strength of the roof (top) over the coal seam. 6) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 7) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. Observations of ground behavior in mining the Choka Dulkan ore body have been described. Ore recovery was limited to approximately 60% because unconsolidated hydraulic fill did not permit either the widening of stope spans nor secondary ore recovery from pillars. Stope undercutting induced high stress concentrations. However, as extraction progressed, ground conditions improved but before extraction was complete they deteriorated again. After completion of a stope, the remnant rib and crown pillars continued to be deformed by other stresses for some time.

The problem of vein formation has been of particular interest to the writer for years. As his work for a long time was confined largely to districts showing large deposits of copper ore, it was natural that the efficiency of replacement, as one if not the chief control of the emplacement of the ore, seemed a particularly attractive hypothesis. Of late years, in almost daily underground work in the Guanajuato district, he has collected evidence which makes it certain that in a number of cases the ore solutions were under sufficient pressure to force the rock walls apart and to hold them apart, thus offering an open space for the deposition of vein and ore-bearing material. This paper will concern itself with conditions frequently met with in hypogene ore deposits of the vein type, and will deal in particular with ore occurrence in precious-metal veins of the type classified by Lindgrenl as epithermal deposits, or metalliferous deposits formed near the surface by ascending thermal waters2 and in genetic connection with igneous rocks. To account for the emplacement of this type of ore deposit various writers have suggested the following agencies: 1. Shattering of the wall rocks. 2. Pressure of growing crystals. 3. Magmation, as treated at length by Spurr3. 4. Replacement. 5. Openings produced by folding. 6. Shearing due to gravity. 7. Shrinkage produced by the passage of pre-ore solutions. 8. Contraction joints produced by lateral secretion. To this list there may be added another agency, a discussion of which forms the basis of this paper: 9. Pressure of the ore-bearing solutions.

The density changes that occurred on annealing cold-worked poly crystalline molybdenum, over the temperature range of 870" to 1630 SC, were determined. Increases in density were observed for recovery and the beginning of recrystallization. An initial decrease in density was observed during re-crystallization. A second decrease in density was observed after recrystallization was completed, as the microstructure changed from columnar grains to equiaxed gvains Both decreases in density were associated with an increase in gain boundary area to volume ratio. The second decrease in density was observed in the annealing range that immediately precedes secondary recrystallization as reported in the literature VARIOUS techniques have been used to identify the recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth processes that occur when cold-worked metals are annealed. As early as 1928 work was conducted that indicated measurable density changes occur when cold-worked single crystals of brass are annealed.' More recently, work by Murphy exhibited a corre- lation of density with microstructural changes observed on annealing cold-worked polycrystalline a brass.2 Other investigators have performed similar work on a brass and copper.324 In reviewing the literature, it was apparent that density work had been limited to fcc materials. Therefore, it was the purpose of this investigation to determine the density changes that accompany annealing the cold-worked bcc material, molybdenum. Two degrees of cold work, 30 and 90 pct reduction of cross-sectional area by rolling, were selected for this study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity vacuum arc-cast molybdenum was used in this study, the principal impurity being carbon in the amount of 80 ppm. The final rolling reductions were made at 1200°C in grooved rolls to provide 5/8-in.-diam rod. Density specimens 0.500 in. diam by 1.5 in. long were machined from the bar stock. The specimens were ground to the final dimensions to provide a smooth surface. Density measurements were made using a hydrostatic technique similar to that used by ~urphy.' This type of equipment permitted weighing in liquid immediately after the air weighing. During each weighing the temperature of the air and liquid was controlled to within 0.0l°C. This was accomplished by sealing the analytical balance in an air-tight brass chamber and surrounding it by an insulated wooden case. Oxide and silicates respond to flotation with a large number of anionic collectors. These include carboxylates (fatty acids), sulfonates, alkyl sulfates, and certain chelating agents. In contrast to sulfide mineral flotation, relatively long-chained collectors (generally longer than 10 carbons) are required to effect flotation of this group of minerals. The structural formulas of these various anionic collectors are presented in Table 1. Formulas and solubilities of various fatty acids are presented in Table 2. These solubilities are those of the dissolved and undissociated species of the acid, e.g. oleic acid, HOl(aq). Of the compounds listed, oleic acid and abietic acid, which IS a major constituent of talloel, are used most commonly in commercial applications. The usage of these two collectors is related to cost and effectiveness. In addition to their high molecular weights, oleic acid contains a double bond in its hydrocarbon chain, while abietic acid is comprised of aromatic rings containing double bonds. The presence of double bonds increases solubility significantly over that of saturated homologues. Stability of metal-collectors assumes a most significant role in these systems, and the solubility products of various metal carboxylates and sulfonates are listed in Tables 3, 4 and 5. In addition to these properties, strength of the acids of these various anionic collectors is also important. The carboxylic and hydroxamic acids are weak acids whereas sulfonic and alkyl sulfuric acids are strong acids. All of the carboxylic acids fall in the range of pK = 4.7 ± 0.5 ([2]); the pK of hydroxamic acid is around 9 ([3]); and the pK of sulfonic acid is about 1.5 ([4]).

The iron-nail method of assaying has been used for a number of years, but has not met with the approval of all assayers. The method possesses advantages which may be given as follows: (1) no preliminary treatment is required; (2) a lead button of proper size can be obtained; (3) it is economical. On the other hand, it has its disadvantages, which may be summed up as follows: (1) it is not applicable to ores containing large amounts of impurities other than sulphur, as practically all the base metals will contaminate the lead button ; (2) the slag is unsatisfactory in the larger number of fusions; (3) the method was known to give low silver results under certain conditions and the gold results were questionable. It was with the idea of determining the extent of this latter disadvantage that the following investigation was undertaken. It is well known that the fusion obtained in the lead assay is far more satisfactory than that in the " nails method" for gold and silver. The principal difference in the charges as a class is the presence of considerable reducing agent in the lead charge, and a limited oxidizing action in the nails charge, dud to PbO. The possibility of improving the nails fusion by simulating the lead charge was the reason for using argol in some tests, even though there were reasons for expecting this would have an objectionable effect on the results. Preparation of the Gold-Bearing Material.
