In this research, earlier developed information integration method and novel web technologies are applied to intensify infrastructure construction process control. The applied method uses semantic methods to integrate scattered information that is later on exploited by process management using state-of-the-art web technologies. The applied method and web technologies not only improve the process management situation awareness by integrated up-todate multi-source process data but also provide platform independent access and visualization tool for process data. Utilization of such technologies potentially lead on cost savings, make processes safer and also more environmentally friendly. The integration method also enables intelligent queries to the integrated data making possible to use machine based inferring to the data.

Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) is a promising thermal insulator for high temperature environments due to its thermal stability and chemical inertness. As was demonstrated with other technical ceramics (e.g., Alumina), addition of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) to a ceramic matrix may significantly enhance the mechanical properties of the composite ceramic. In this work, 8 mol% YSZ with 0.2, 0.5 and 1wt% CNTs composites were prepared via Spark Plasma Sintering process. The densification, Vicker’s microhardness, specific gravity and microstructure evolution of the composites were investigated. The results suggest that the addition of up to 1wt% CNTs to YSZ yielded optimal combination of the studied properties. At higher addition levels, the specific gravity decreased and clustering of CNTs occurred, leading to poor densification and a relative loss of performance.

"The current advanced technologies for the manufacture of light weight metals processing significantly increasing and attributes to the safety, performance, recyclability and economy. Still lack of technologies developed for light weight metals processing waste utilization and application. Environmentally friendly methods need to develop for better understanding the processing waste utilization. Alumina and aluminium processing creates a wide range of waste products, the most significant being is red mud. Bauxite residue is a high volume hazardous waste and nearly 3 billion tons have been dumped worldwide. Approximately, 120 Million tons/yr of red mud being produced without any environmental sustainable solution. Currently the most significant technology is waste utilization. The bauxite residue is suitable for road base construction, golf bunker sand, back fill and, general fill. Sustainable recycling technologies are necessary for the bauxite residue utilization for the recovery of rare earth elements and cement materials. Carbonation or CO2 sequestration of carbon dioxide is a method pioneered for the bauxite residue is modified to reduce alkalinity. The carbonation of alkaline material is an inexpensive and safe process that leads to the formation of thermodynamically stable products. The use of the carbonation can be an advantageous solution for environmental climate change and sustainability problems in the new century.INTRODUCTIONIn 2014, bauxite consumption was estimated to be 9.6 million tons, nearly all of which was imported, worth an estimated 269 million dollars. More than 95% of the bauxite was converted to alumina, and the remaining 5% went to non-metallurgical products, such as abrasives, chemicals, proppants, and refractories. Global aluminum demand is growing steadily spurred by growth in India and China (RBCAluminum Market Outlook, 2013) (Figure 1). Aluminum consumption is expected to rise 5% annually through the end of the decade, reaching 67 million tons per year by 2020. Global bauxite production decreased by 17% from that of 2013, principally owing to lower production in Indonesia. In response to a Government ban on exporting bauxite and other unprocessed mineral ores that took effect on January 12, 2014, bauxite mines throughout Indonesia shut down and production decreased from 55.7 million tons in 2013 to an estimated 500,000 tons in 2014. The ban was part of a mining law that was instituted in 2009 to increase development of downstream processing facilities in Indonesia."

"The presently increasing world-wide interest in advanced ceramic materials is generally focussed on their exploitation in both structural and functional applications. With the opportunity to engineer microstructures and thereby closely control and tailor the final properties, there are many new applications being made for these materials in both areas.The scope and some of the applications for functional ceramics are reviewed and examples of the present Canadian activity in this field are discussed.BackgroundThere has been progressively increasing international interest in the development and exploitation of ceramic materials in the last five years. The stimulus for this interest arises from several quarters, each of which are independent of the other.• There is a growing awareness of the strategic nature and vulnerability of supply of the raw materials used to produce high performance metal alloys.• The metal alloys are reaching the upper temperature limit for their performance as structural components in engines.• The dramatic increase in oil prices during the late 1970s focussed attention on the need for reduced consumption in many sectors, i.e., there is a need for more efficient engines that operate at higher temperatures - above those tolerated by the present superalloys.• A number of ceramics, especially the structural materials such as SiC, A120 3, AI20rSi02, Si3N4 and the Sialons are produced using non-strategic raw materials and they can exhibit startling performance-auto turbo-rotors are in production mad e of Si3N4 that operate up to 190000 rpm at 600°C, 150000 rpm at 900°C.• Ceramic s are generally of lower density - significant in the weight-reduction of automobiles such as the replacement of a 20-kg five-segment steel leaf spring with a single segment carbon-fibre reinforced unit of 3 kg. • Ceramics also offer major ad vantages in generating, monitoring or controlling the electromagnetic spectrum whether in bulk or thin-film devices that exploit optical, magnetic, pyroelectric, piezoelectric, electronic and I or ionic conductivity characteristics.The opportunity to combine several of these char acteristics in a single material by composition, processing and microstructural design has resulted in an advanced ceramics industry that had world-wide sales in 1980of $4.2 billion (U.S.)(I) and is predicted to grow to sales in the range $7 to $10 billion by 1990 and $16 to $24 billion by the year 2000(2). Arsenic bearing minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13), which may associate with major copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S) and bomite (Cu2FeS4), usually report to the copper concentrate in conventional flotation due to their similar flotation properties. Arsenic in a copper concentrate causes environmental problems and also problems in the subsequent pyrometallurgical process. Voltammetric studies were carried out to investigate the oxidation characteristics of enargite, tennantite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bomite. Contact angle measurements and micro-flotation tests were conducted to examine the flotation characteristics of enargite and chalcopyrite under controlled pulp potentials. Selective flotation of enargite from chalcopyrite under varied pulp potentials was conducted to investigate the feasibility of arsenic removal from a copper concentrate. The test results indicate that the non-arsenic bearing copper minerals ( chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite) were easier to oxidise than arsenic bearing minerals ( enargite and tennantite) in an alkaline solution. Enargite floated well at a potential as high as +0.45 V vs. SCE while chalcopyrite was completely depressed at a potential higher than +0.43 V vs. SCE. Selective flotation revealed that enargite can be successfully removed from chalcopyrite through controlling the pulp potential at +0.30 ~ +0.50 V vs. SCE.

"Falconbridge Mine has a history of significant microseismic activity dating back to 1955. Since mid-1981, a microseismic monitoring system has been operating in the area around the No .9 Shaft hoist room located 25 m from the are zone at a depth of 1200m. Several mine wide faults dissect this area and have been shown to be microseismic-active due to mining. The microseismic monitor has been interfaced with a small dedicated personal computer and a communications device to perform routine data evaluation and to produce graphical output. The programs are described and selected result s from the monitoring program are presented.IntroductionFalconbridge Mine is located on the southeast rim of the Sudbury Basin. The nickel-copper sulphide ore zone is essentially a tabular orebody striking approximately east-west and dipping at 80 degrees north near surface and rolling to 75 degrees to 80 degree s south by the 1000 level. (Mine level number s represent the approximate depth in feet below ground surface .) This dip is maintained down to the 6000 level. The north wall is comprised of jointed norite and a faulted contact up to 1 m thick exists between the ore zone and the norite. The south wall rock is a greenstone with highly siliceous lenses and often has a faulted contact with the ore zone. No less than five mine wide faults exist, as shown in Fig. I.Mining ha s been carried out from virtually the bedrock contact to depths of 1830 m although the majority of current activity is between 900 and 1500 m below surface. A winze provides access below the 4025 level and the cage hoist room is located on the 3850 level in the north wall 25 m from the contact. Because of concern for the stability of this hoist room, there has been no mining activity within 60 m of the hoist room and by 1980 this block of ore was one of the major blocks of high-grade ore remaining in the mine . Mining of this block was originally scheduled for very late in the decade.Prior to a six-month shutdown in 1982, this mine produced approximately 450,000 tonnes of ore annually, mainly by cut and- fill techniques. Following the shutdown, annual production has been reduced to approximately 200,000 tonnes and production is now mainly by undercut and fill techniques .Mining-induced seismicity has occurred at Falconbridge Mine since at least 1955 and reviews of the microseismic problems for the periods from 1965 - 1970 and from 1971 to 1979 were made by Singh (1971) and Vongpaisal et al. (1980), respectively. The need for instrumentation was addressed by these authors. Following several large events during the spring of 1980, a decision was made to investigate existing microseismic monitors and to apply micro seismic monitoring techniques in Falconbridge Mine. Application of microseismic monitoring to Falconbridge Mine was to concentrate on the No . 9 Shaft hoist room area of the mine, particularly around the 4025 level where a large mechanized cut-and- fill stope was approaching this level. By mid - 1981, the microseismic monitor was fully installed and with in a year , a short-period seismograph and a personal computer had been added to the system."

In the stretch-bend or bending-under-tension test, a strip is rigidly clamped and restrained at each end and bent by central transverse loading using a radiused punch: The strip deflection at failure has been used as a measure of formability for high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels by other investigators. In this work, a detailed study is made of strains developing during stretch bending of an 80,000-lbf/ in 2 (552 MPa) yield stress steel using different punch radii. It is shown that toward the end of the process, the bending strains at both the inner and outer surfaces are tensile and suddenly increase at a rapid and approximately equal rate. The strain ratio in the failure region departs significantly from plane strain , even using a large width-to-thickness ratio of about 10. The effective fracture strains appear to be independent of bend ratio (punch radius/thickness) and significantly below the fracture s train in simple tension. Metallographic and tensile data were obtained for the subject material and, for one bend ratio, the effects on stretch-bend parameters of annealing both on this material and a. carbon steel were compared.

In Canadian mines, ear muffs are now an essential part of safety equipment. Because of this, a research study was conducted to investigate their efficiency. The main characteristics of eleven commercially available ear muffs were investigated in the laboratory and analyzed by: (I) a psychophysical method; and (2) a physical method. These investigations showed the following effects: head size has a significant influence on the attenuation because of a different clamping force; the amount of hair trapped between the ear muff cushion and the head decreased ear muff attenuation; attenuation and comfort are not in a causal relationship; with the use of glasses and their adapters, attenuation decreases-the adapters are not effective sound barriers; there are no great differences in attenuation with neck movement; the efficiencies of various brands of ear muffs are not equal; ear muffs with a small cushion area start serving their purpose more quickly because the force per unit area is larger; a clamping force larger than 900 g wt, in most ear muffs, does not cause an increase in attenuation; attenuation characteristics (ANSI 224.22 - 1957) of ear muffs show some correlation with physical tests. Nine ear muffs out of the eleven were tested under uniform conditions in mines. Three ear muffs were found to be the best. All three ear muff s have bands passing behind the head. The ear muff with a support strap, which improves comfort and maintains a good fit during wear, showed the best attenuation. Causes of poor attenuation are numerous: bad mounting of ear muffs on helmets, improper fitting, interferency by hair and glasses, improper wearing by miners, unsatisfactory enforcement by supervisory personnel, incomplete training of miners, etc. Results of this research have indicated that none of the ear muff s tested in this study contain all of the characteristics desirable in an ideal unit. Because of unsatisfactory ear muff attenuation in working conditions (/5 dBA), it should be a mandatory requirement that workers wear both ear muff s and ear plugs if the noise level is higher than 105 dBA (various literature recommends t io dBA). The key to the solution lies in the following: the foreman must be capable of helping and controlling miners in their task of wearing ear muffs properly; the program must be introduced to miners; and constant contact must be maintained with manufacturers.

"A common practice in preventing gravity-fed tailing pipeline from plugging due to sanding is to add lime at relatively high dosage rates. The lime affects the rheology of the slurry ""vehicle"" which transports the coarser particles in a heterogeneous flow-regime. This paper describes a study of the effect of lime on the critical deposition velocities and friction head losses of Highmont Mining Company's mill tailing. Testwork using an extrusion viscometer was related to the surface chemistry changes brought about by the high lime additions. Lime additions which typically increased the tailing pH from 8.4 to 11.5 reduced the critical deposition velocities from approximately 3.2 to 1.7 m/sec.IntroductionCommon practice, at least in base metal concentrators in British Columbia, is to use high lime additions in tailing slurries when the pipeline becomes partially plugged with sands. Some concentrators, such as the Highmont Mining Co. Ltd. plant, add lime on a continuous basis during low tonnage periods and during startup/shutdown transition s. Although such high lime additions often solve temporary plugging problems, the effect of lime on slurry rheology has not been well understood.Slurry pipelines are designed to transport solids in suspension with a minimum of wear and without particle deposition. These two objectives are in opposition because the velocities required to maintain solid suspension can sometimes cause high head losses in the pipeline, as well as wear problems. Thus, the optimum velocity for a long distance slurry pipeline is in the range that provides just enough turbulence to keep coarse particles in suspension."

An area of about 7,000 square miles within the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province is underlain chiefly by granitic gneisses. There are, however, some exposures of mafic rocks which warrant further investigation, and some attractive structures, particularly basins, which deserve additional economic consideration. T HIS paper describes in a very general fashion the economic and geological features of an area of about 7,000 square miles on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province (Figure 1). The scarcity of published geological data on this part of the Cana-dian Shield (DePuyjalon, 1899 and Longley, 1944) justifies the presentation of these tentative results. It should be appreciated, however, that the information which follows was acquired in a rapid reconnaissance designed specifically to out-line what might be interpreted as favourable geological environments for the occurrence of economic minerals, rather than to produce an authoritative analysis of the geological history of the region.

The geological presentation is based on illustrations that are intended to provide a progressively closer look at the ore occurrence. The illustrations consist of an index map, a geological map of a 15-by 85-mile area including the Thompson mine, a series of four maps dealing with the geophysics and geology of a 6-by 4\f.j-mile area at Thompson, a mine level plan and corresponding section, two sto11e 11lans and corresponding sections, and photo-graphs and photomicrogra11hs of the various one types. T HE Thompson mine is located about 400 miles due north of Winnipeg. The ore deposit was dis-covered in February, 1956. Five years later on March 25, 1961, the Thompson production facilities were officially dedicated with the shearing of the first nickel produced at the Thompson refinery. Full production, at an annual rate of more than 75,000,000 lbs. of refined nickel, was attained later in the year.

The market potential f or these advanced engineering alloys is substantial, and their impact on traditional zinc die casting alloy consumption is particuarly important. The ZA alloys, in offering increased performance through zinc castings produced at low cost and by a wide range of moulding processes, have unlocked a multitude of new end-use applications.Following a review of the development of ZA alloys, of their key properties and of their performance characteristics, the numerous challenges that the alloys present to the zinc industry and to the R&D community are discussed.IntroductionZinc is anodic to steel and has a low, uniform rat e of corrosion; it has a low melting point, can be cast with precision , and is readily finished. In addition to its use in protecting steel and in the production of a wide range of castings, zinc is employed : (1) to produce brass, high-strength aluminum alloys and magnesium die casting alloys, (2) in the wrought state for coinage and in building products, particularly as roofing materials , and (3) as an oxide, in the rubber industry, in ceramics, glass, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products and as the starting materials for many chemicals.Zinc die castings are produced with accuracy at high speed, at low cost, are easily finished and have excel1ent mechnical properties . Car fuel economy, changes in automobile styling, competition from other materials, increased sophistication of design and miniaturization have all led to a dramatic change in the volume of zinc consumed for die-casting applications. This has been particularly notable in the United States. Throughout the 19505 and the I960s, casting was the fastest growing major use of zinc; it was firmly established, accounting for 35% of the total zinc consumption(1), By 1983, the volume of zinc being purchased for casting applications had dropped to less than 20% of all zinc consumed in the United States. In the western world(2), consumption for zinc casting application s is currently at about 15%; being nearly equal to the zinc consumed by the brass industry. Coating applications dominate with a consumption of more than 40% of the total market."

"CANMET has been operating as a Government Technology Centre for two years. Many of CANMET's programs involve long-term research and require special expertise, often available at Canadian universities. CANMET's involvement with universities ranges from research grants and contracts to exchanges of scientists and joint use of research facililies. Examples of CANMET - university cooperation in mining are presented. IntroductionIn the last two years or so CANMET has undergone a significant metamorphosis, resulting in greater emphasis on applied research to enhance Canada's industrial capability. CANMET's new mandate is reflected in the types of projects undertaken and their categorization, (Fig . I). Emphasis is being placed on two project categories: strategic R&D, to enable CANMET to serve the changing technological needs of the industry; and incrernental R&D, to serve the more immediate industry needs through modifications to existing technologies and knowledge. The balance of CANMET's e ffor t is devoted to providing Mandated and Specialized Services, and to Exploratory Research.CANMET interaction with universities can involve one of several available vehicles : contracts, research grants, exchanges of scientists , student employment and nomination of professors on CANMET's advisory council. In this work, strontium doped lanthanum ferrite (LSF) and their composite cathodes were fabricated by screen printing on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes. Their electrochemical properties were evaluated by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and steady-state polarization methods. All the cathodes were screened by comparing their total polarization resistances before and after activation processes at different temperatures. The improved LSF composite cathodes were also screen-printed on YSZ/NiO half cells to fabricate solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which have reached the output power densities of 170 mW/cm2 at 650 °C, 230 mW/cm2 at 700 °C, 304 mW/cm2 at 750 °C and 388 mW/cm2 at 800 °C.

This paper generalizes open stopes into elliptical cross sections and applies the results of calculations based on the mathematical theory of elasticity to indicate stress distribution on the boundaries of such stopes. These show both compressive and tensile stresses and provide an ex-planation for the development of excessive dilution in shrinkage toping. Introduction T HE stress pattern around shrinkage stopes is identical with that around other stopes under the same physical conditions. However, a shrinkage stope ends as an unsupported open stope, and the method i limited to the stress range within which the rock is generally self-supporting. If it is acceptable to generalize the outline of a shrinkage stope into an elliptical cross section, then the graphs of Geldart & Udd (1) (see also Panek (2) and Denkhaus (3)) provide a good base for approximating the stress distribution as mining progresses. Abstract - The Lupin mine, located in the central Slave province just east of the western boundary of Nunavut Territory, is a world-class example of a Neoarchean-aged banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted lode-gold deposit. At the minesite the gold-mineralized Lupin BIF, separating stratigraphically underlying psammitic wacke and overlying argillaceous turbidite sequences, delineates the Lupin dome, a hammerhead-shaped F2/F3 interference fold structure occurring at the greenschist to amphibolite facies metamorphic transition within the thermal aureole of the Contwoyto batholith. Detailed paragenetic relationships indicate that peak thermal metamorphism coincided with the switch from regional D2 compression to rapid D3 unroofing of the Neoarchean orogenic infrastructure. Gold initially precipitated with pyrrhotite, replacing amphibolitic BIF at the apex of the Lupin deformation zone, separating the east and west lobes of the Contwoyto batholith. Over the course of associated prograde/retrograde metasomatic overprints, gold was further remobilized during garnet and loellingite/arsenopyrite growth in chlorite-altered selvages of late-forming ladder quartz veins. A metamorphic model of ore genesis, with gold being scavenged and transported by metamorphic fluid that was shed and structurally trapped at the amphibolite recrystallization front, is favored over the previously proposed syngenetic and exogenic models of gold concentration that have tended to polarize genetic interpretations to date.

Autonomous robots are useful for 3D underground mine mapping to avoid human exposure to hazardous spaces. To prepare a precise mine map, a self-navigating robot must navigate an arduous path, avoiding obstacles and sensing the environment. A prototype laboratory-scale robot was built and evaluated through a mock-up in a test mine gallery. It was outfitted with a 2D laser scanner, a stereo camera for obstacle avoidance, and a high-precision, laser-based imaging and digitizing system for collecting 3D point cloud data. Various algorithms were used for scan matching to facilitate simultaneous localization of the robot for mapping.

"The zinc-lead deposit of the Lake Geneva Mining Company is on lot 7, con. VI, Hess township, Sudbury district, Ontario, about 10 miles northwest of the northern rim of the Sudbury Basin. Though a relatively small deposit, it shows some rather interesting relations to cross-cutting, pre-ore, quartz diabase dykes, which merit description.The deposit was discovered in October 1924 by J. H. Collins beneath iron-stained drift and oxidized sulphides. This proved to be the northwestern extremity of the orebody, the remainder of which extends southeast below swampy ground. Exploration began in 1927. In 1928 a vertical shaft was sunk to 250 feet and a level established at 235 feet. Later the shaft was deepened to 400 feet and new levels opened at 315 and 375 feet. In 1943 an inclined winze was sunk below the vein from the 315-foot level to a vertical depth of 640 feet, and two additional levels were opened at 525 and 615 feet respectively.The geology of the area has been described by T. T. Quirke (1), F. F. Osborne (2), F. J. Alcock (3), and Ralph Tuck (4). Private reports have also been made by Carl Tolman, J. E. Gill, and K. W. Fritzsche. Tuck's paper, covering the work completed to 1930, gives a detailed account of the character of the ore and enclosing rocks.Up to May 1944, when the property was closed, all ore above the 375-foot level and a small tonnage from below this elevation had been removed. This paper focuses on new developments regarding thermal rock fragmentation applications. The technology consists in a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and air. The thermal reaction, which is created, allows for the enlargement of 125-mm to 450-mm holes by breaking the rock in a spalling effect. It has been used for over 30 years in Russian open pit mining. Following an agreement between Dynamitage T.C.G. Inc. and the owner of the technology, major improvements have been brought to this technology, allowing for the fabrication of a prototype suitable for the Canadian industry. In Russia and Ukraine, thermal rock fragmentation is actually used to drill large diameter holes in surface mining. Upon having acquired a better knowledge of this technology, it seems that it presents a great potential for selective mining in narrow-vein operations, for either surface or underground mining. Rocmec International Inc., a subsidiary of Dynamitage T.C.G. Inc., and Natural Resources Canada are technical partners in the evaluation of the operational parameters and environmental aspects, such as gas, heat, dust and fog emissions. Furthermore, Canada Economic Development is a financial partner in this project. This paper presents the technology and its history. It also reports on the changes brought to the equipment to adapt it to North American environments. A summary of the tests realized since 1995 is provided, along with the main conclusions obtained. The anticipated applications for the use of this technology in both surface and underground environments are described, such as open pit mining, bulk sampling and narrow-vein ore extraction. An estimate showing a comparison between the thermal fragmentation mining concept and the long-hole mining method is presented and, finally, the future developments planned are listed.
